Superconducting nanostrip single photon detectors have emerged as the highest performing single-photon detectors; however, the possibility to use superconducting microstrip as single photon detectors is very appealing both to use them as larger areas detectors and for an easier technology in the manufacturing. The aim of this work is to test the photoresponse in liquid helium dewar of 9 nm thick MoSi covered with a very thin (2 nm) layer of Al, in two different configurations: nanomeanders and microstrips. We demonstrate that MoSi/Al microstrips can work as photodetectors also at T = 4.2 K. We also compare the dark count rate of the microstrip and the nanowire, confirming the lower noise for the microstrips also at 4.2 K.

The continuous development of superconducting electronics is encouraging several studies on hybrid Josephson junctions (JJs) based on superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor (SFS) heterostructures, as either spintronic devices or switchable elements in quantum and classical circuits. Recent experimental evidence of macroscopic quantum tunneling and of an incomplete 0-$\ensuremath{\pi}$ transition in tunnel-ferromagnetic spin-filter JJs could also enhance the capabilities of SFS JJs as active elements. Here, we provide a self-consistent electrodynamic characterization of $\mathrm{Nb}\mathrm{N}$/$\mathrm{Gd}\mathrm{N}$/$\mathrm{Nb}\mathrm{N}$ spin-filter JJs as a function of the barrier thickness, disentangling the high-frequency dissipation effects due to the environment from the intrinsic low-frequency dissipation processes. The fitting of the $I$-$V$ characteristics at 4.2 K and at 300 mK by using the tunnel-junction-microscopic model allows us to determine the subgap resistance ${R}_{\mathrm{sg}}$, the quality factor $Q$, and the junction capacitance $C$. These results provide the scaling behavior of the electrodynamic parameters as a function of the barrier thickness, which represents a fundamental step for the feasibility of tunnel-ferromagnetic JJs as active elements in quantum and classical circuits, and are of general interest for tunnel junctions other than conventional SIS JJs.

Nanowires of Y-Ba-Cu-O, with the thickness of 50 nm and the width ranging from 90 nm to 500 nm have been successfully grown on lanthanum aluminate substrates for photon detection experiments. The nanowires were up to 10-mu m long and formed a meander structure, covering the area of up to 30x10 mu m(2) with a fill factor of 50%. The samples were excited using optical laser pulses at a 1550 nm wavelength and resulting photoresponse signals were measured as a function of both temperature and normalized bias current. Presence of two, distinct regimes in the photoresponse temperature dependence has been clearly evidenced, suggesting different physical mechanisms of the signal formation. Presented experimental results shed new light on prospects of implementation of high-temperature superconducting oxides in photon detection and counting.

Archimedes is a feasibility study of a future experiment to ascertain the interaction of vacuum fluctuations with gravity. The experiment should measure the force that the earth's gravitational field exerts on a Casimir cavity by using a small force detector. We find an unambiguous relationship between disorder-driven features in the temperature dependence of the resistance and the behavior, as functions of the temperature, of the parameters necessary to describe some of the relaxation processes in the photoinduced differential time-resolved reflectivity of three samples of ${\text{Nd}}_{1.83}{\text{Ce}}_{0.17}{\text{CuO}}_{4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}\ensuremath{\delta}}$. The latter, sharing the same $\text{Ce}$ content, have been fabricated and annealed ad hoc in order to differ only for the degree of disorder, mainly related to oxygen content and location, and, consequently, for the temperature dependence of the resistance: Two of them present a minimum in the resistance and behave as a superconductor and as a metal, respectively; the third behaves as an insulator. The systematic coherence between the resistance and the relaxation parameters behaviors in temperature for all three samples is absolutely remarkable and shows that pump-probe measurements can be extremely sensitive to disorder as it drives the emergence of new excitations and of the related relaxation channels as in this paradigmatic case.

The main advantage of using SQUIDs in NDE is its unrivalled magnetic sensitivity down to very low frequencies, which allows the detection of weak magnetic fields due to defects also in very low electrical conductive materials like CFRP, commonly used in aerospace structures. In this work the fatigue damage evaluation on CFRP laminates, cross-ply or quasi-isotropic, in real-time during quasi-static loading is monitored. The material responses are detected by using an Eddy Current technique with HTS dc SQUID magnetometer.

The behavior of a Josephson system under pulsed operation is of utmost importance for developing reliable digital devices working at very high clock frequencies. Information about effect of thermal noise over pulsed operation is also useful to design errors free devices. Recent experiments in a system of two stacked junctions show that pulses applied to the first junction (injector) of the stack drive the Josephson biased second junction (detector) in the resistive state. The experiment was interpreted as pulsed-assisted escape toward resistive state as a consequence of an excitation of large non-linear oscillations in the detector junction that, with the contribution of thermal noise, drives out the junction from the zero voltage state. Moreover, an unstability of the resistive state toward the zero voltage state under the same pulsed operation was also noted. By means of a systematic numerical approach to the problem, we present a study of the pulsed-assisted escape using the framework of the thermal escape theory for the direct transition from zero voltage state to resistive state. A superconducting transistor with large current gain and bandwidth at low temperatures would have many applications. We have fabricated and tested a new three-terminal superconducting device with transistor-like properties at an operating temperature of 4.2 K. It is based on a stacked double tunnel junction structure where the intermediate film is a bilayer of superconducting Nb and an Al quasiparticle trap which can work either in the superconducting or in the normal metal state. Current amplification factors of up to 2.0 are observed at a temperature of 4.2 K when the Al is superconducting, while large current gains of more than 50 are observed when the Al is in the normal state. The device shows a high degree of unidirectionality. The results can be explained on the basis of the recently proposed QUAsiparticle TRApping TRANsistor, which should have wide applications in detection systems operating at low temperatures.

Superconducting Tunnel Junctions (STJ) are promising devices as a next generation of nuclear and optical detectors. Non-equilibrium experiments can provide useful information on the behaviour of a perturbed superconductor. Among possible nonequilibrium sources, we used quasi-particle injection in three-terminal double tunnel junction devices and a laser pumping source. We investigated the effect of perturbed conditions on sub-harmonic gap structures, which are present in I-V characteristics of high quality Nb-based STJs. Experimental results concerning the change of the energy gap measured at V=2/spl Delta//2e show features which can not be completely explained in terms of simple heating effects.

Among superconducting materials used in developing high performance nanowire detectors, NbN demonstrated to have unique characteristics in terms of fast response time, quantum efficiency and photon-number resolving capability. We investigated the role of proximity effect on superconducting NbN thin films covered by a weak ferromagnetic NiCu thin layer. Hetero-structures NbN/NiCu have been deposited by DC magnetron sputtering on MgO substrates without any heating. Three-terminal superconducting tunnel devices offer a powerful tool to investigate nonequilibrium phenomena in superconductors. We study the role of the proximity effect in a Nb/Al bilayer forming the intermediate electrode of a stacked structure configuration. The spatial profile of the pair potential along the common electrode and the effective density of states near the detector tunnel barrier are determined by combining the deconvolution of the current-voltage (I-V) injector characteristics and the numerical solution of the microscopic proximity model equations. The Josephson current variation following a steady-state injection was measured down to 1.5 K. Results are discussed in the framework of a simple nonequilibrium model, which leads also to an estimate of the effective relaxation time limiting quasiparticle scattering processes in the Nb/Al bilayer.

Femtosecond spectroscopy has been used to investigate the quasi-particle relaxation times in nearly optimally doped Fe-based superconductors FeSe 0.5Te0.5 and optimally doped Ba-122 thin films growth on a Fe buffer layer. Experimental results concerning the temperature dependence of the relaxation time of such pnictides both in the superconducting state are now presented and discussed. Modelling the T-dependence of relaxation times an estimation of both electron-phonon constant and superconducting energy gap in the excitation spectrum of both Fe(Se,Te) and Ba-122 compounds is obtained.

We present characterization of Ba(Fe1-x Cox) 2As2 thin film using a magneto-optical Kerr effect setup based on photoelastic modulation. The magneto optical technique has been used to analyse the thickness and the temperature dependence of the magnetic properties of epitaxial Ba(Fe1-x Cox)2As2/Fe thin films grown on MgO substrate. The first harmonics, of the reflected laser beam intensity from pnictide thin films is compared with a reference Fe thin film. The hysteretic loops of such samples at room temperature and at 5K are presented.

A theoretical model to describe the spectral response of SIS tunnel junctions under irradiation in the presence of diffusion and edge losses of non-equilibrium quasiparticles has been developed. The model takes into account the back-tunnelling effect, in the general case of asymmetrical rates of tunnelling, gamma(12) not equal gamma(21). It provides a quantitative estimate of parameters like the edge reflectivity, the diffusion length and the diffusion coefficient, which are important parameters for a diagnostic of STJ-detectors. International audience; We present here recent results on detection of surface and subsurface artificial features in Al-Ti planar structures, to show current performance of our eddy-current nondestructive evaluation system based on HTc SQUIDs. The anomalous magnetic fields generated by flaws with known electromagnetic characteristics have been modeled by three-dimensional codes based on finite element method and volume integral formulation and developed for the investigated problem. Both numerical solutions have correctly predicted the shape of the complicated magnetic field response which is mainly the result of the shape of the defect, the geometry of the inducing coil and the characteristics of the SQUID gradiometer.

The efficiency of the charge collecting mechanism of a radiation detector based on superconducting tunnel junctions depends strongly on the competition between tunneling and losses of quasiparticles in the electrodes of the junction. In this article we discuss the loss of quasiparticles, both in the bulk and at the edges of the electrodes. The quasiparticle loss taking place during their diffusion in the junction limits the amount of charge carriers tunneling and thereby the energy resolution of the detector. A charge amplification process caused by multiple tunneling of quasiparticles is beneficial to higher signal to noise ratios. Such multiple tunneling is always present in the case of junctions based on symmetrical electrodes. In this article we present a theory for the detector response which takes into account both multiple tunneling and the diffusion of quasiparticles. A model is presented for the spectral response of the detector based on four parameters one of which is the degree of back-tunneling present in the device. Analytical solutions of the model for rectangular and circular junctions are discussed. The predictions of the theory are compared with an experimental pulse height spectrum obtained on a Nb/Al2O3/Nb junction. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
