Abstract: An overview of the recent operations and the main results of cesium injection in the Source for the Production of Ions of Deuterium Extracted from Rf plasma (SPIDER) negative ion source are described in this contribution. In experiments without cesium injection, all SPIDER plants were tested to verify the basic expectations on the operational parameters (e.g., electron cooling effectiveness of magnetic filter field) and to determine its operational region. For beam properties, it was shown that the current density varies across the beam in the vertical direction. In preliminary cesium experiments, the expected increase of negative ion current and simultaneous decrease of co-extracted electrons were found, along with the influence of the control parameters (polarization of the plasma electrodes, magnetic filter field) on the SPIDER beam uniformity in the horizontal and vertical directions. It was shown that non-Gaussian tails can be identified in the angular distribution on the plane perpendicular to the beam propagation direction. Stray particles, nonhomogeneous beam and large divergence might result in unexpected heat and particle loads over ITER neutral beam injector (NBI) accelerator grids; it is the goal of SPIDER to assess and possibly to identify suitable methods for controlling these beam features. A major shutdown, planned for late 2021, to solve the issues identified during the operation and to carry out scheduled modifications, is outlined. Such improvements are expected to allow SPIDER to pursue the ITER requirements in terms of negative ion current, electron-to-ion ratio, and beam duration.

Abstract: A global heat flux model based on a fractional derivative of plasma pressure is proposed for the heat transport in fusion plasmas. The degree of the fractional derivative of the heat flux, α, is defined through the power balance analysis of the steady state. Abstract: ITER envisages the use of two heating neutral beam injectors plus an optional one as part of the auxiliary heating and current drive system, to reach the desired performances during its various phases of operation. The 16.5 MW expected neutral beam power per injector is several notches higher than worldwide existing facilities.In order to enable such development, a Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF) was established at Consorzio RFX, exploiting the synergy of two test beds, called SPIDER and MITICA. SPIDER is dedicated developing and char-acterizing large efficient negative ion sources at relevant parameters in ITER-like conditions: source and accel-erator located in the same vacuum where the beam propagates, immunity to electromagnetic interferences of multiple radio-frequency (RF) antennas, avoidance of RF-induced discharges on the outside of the source. Three years of experiments on SPIDER have addressed to the necessary design modifications to enable full perfor-mances. The source is presently under a long shut-down phase to incorporate learnings from the experimental campaign, in particular events/issues occurred during operation, which led to the identification of improvement opportunities/necessities (e.g. RF discharges, local burns, water leaks, other damages, configuration/design upgrades to maximize chances/margin to quest target parameters).Parallelly, developments on MITICA, the full-scale prototype of the ITER Neutral Beam Injector (NBI) featuring a 1 MV accelerator and ion neutralization, are underway including manufacturing of the beam source, accel-erator and the beam line components, while power supplies and auxiliary plants, already installed, are under final testing and commissioning.Integration, commissioning and tests of the 1 MV power supplies are essential for this first-of-kind system, unparalleled both in research and industry field. 1.2 MV dc insulating tests of high voltage components were successfully completed. The integrated test to confirm 1 MV output by combining invertor systems, DC gener-ators and transmission lines extracted errors/accidents in some components. To realize a concrete system for ITER, said events have been addressed and solutions for the repair and the improvement of the system were developed.Hence, NBTF is emerging as a necessary facility, due to the large gap with existing injectors, effectively dedicated to identify issues and find solutions to enable successful ITER NBI operations in a time bound fashion. The lessons learned during the implementation on NBTF and future perspectives are here discussed.

4. Overview of the design of the ITER heating neutral beam injectors

Abstract: The heating neutral beam injectors (HNBs) of ITER are designed to deliver 16.7 MW of 1 MeV D ^0 or 0.87 MeV H ^0 to the ITER plasma for up to 3600 s. They will be the most powerful neutral beam (NB) injectors ever, delivering higher energy NBs to the plasma in a tokamak for longer than any previous systems have done. The design of the HNBs is based on the acceleration and neutralisation of negative ions as the efficiency of conversion of accelerated positive ions is so low at the required energy that a realistic design is not possible, whereas the neutralisation of H ^− and D ^− remains acceptable (≈56%). The design of a long pulse negative ion based injector is inherently more complicated than that of short pulse positive ion based injectors because: • negative ions are harder to create so that they can be extracted and accelerated from the ion source; • electrons can be co-extracted from the ion source along with the negative ions, and their acceleration must be minimised to maintain an acceptable overall accelerator efficiency; • negative ions are easily lost by collisions with the background gas in the accelerator; • electrons created in the extractor and accelerator can impinge on the extraction and acceleration grids, leading to high power loads on the grids; • positive ions are created in the accelerator by ionisation of the background gas by the accelerated negative ions and the positive ions are back-accelerated into the ion source creating a massive power load to the ion source; • electrons that are co-accelerated with the negative ions can exit the accelerator and deposit power on various downstream beamline components. The design of the ITER HNBs is further complicated because ITER is a nuclear installation which will generate very large fluxes of neutrons and gamma rays. Consequently all the injector components have to survive in that harsh environment. Additionally the beamline components and the NB cell, where the beams are housed, will be activated and all maintenance will have to be performed remotely. This paper describes the design of the HNB injectors, but not the associated power supplies, cooling system, cryogenic system etc, or the high voltage bushing which separates the vacuum of the beamline from the high pressure SF _6 of the high voltage (1 MV) transmission line, through which the power, gas and cooling water are supplied to the beam source. Also the magnetic field reduction system is not described.

Abstract: Neutral beam injection is one of the most important methods of plasma heating in thermonuclear fusion experiments, allowing the attainment of fusion conditions as well as driving the plasma current. Neutral beams are generally produced by electrostatically accelerating ions, which are neutralised before injection into the magnetised plasma. At the particle energy required for the most advanced thermonuclear devices and particularly for ITER, neutralisation of positive ions is very inefficient so that negative ions are used. The present paper is devoted to the description of the phenomena occurring when a high-power multi-ampere negative ion beam travels from the beam source towards the plasma. Simulation of the trajectory of the beam and of its features requires various numerical codes, which must take into account all relevant phenomena. The leitmotiv is represented by the interaction of the beam with the background gas. The main outcome is the partial neutralisation of the beam particles, but ionisation of the background gas also occurs, with several physical and technological consequences. Diagnostic methods capable of investigating the beam properties and of assessing the relevance of the various phenomena will be discussed. Examples will be given regarding the measurements collected in the small flexible NIO1 source and regarding the expected results of the prototype of the neutral beam injectors for ITER. The tight connection between measurements and simulations in view of the operation of the beam is highlighted.

Abstract: The ITER Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF), called PRIMA (Padova Research on ITER Megavolt Accelerator), is hosted in Padova, Italy and includes two experiments: MITICA, the full-scale prototype of the ITER heating neutral beam injector, and SPIDER, the full-size radio frequency negative-ions source. The NBTF realization and the exploitation of SPIDER and MITICA have been recognized as necessary to make the future operation of the ITER heating neutral beam injectors efficient and reliable, fundamental to the achievement of thermonuclear-relevant plasma parameters in ITER. This paper reports on design and R&D carried out to construct PRIMA, SPIDER and MITICA, and highlights the huge progress made in just a few years, from the signature of the agreement for the NBTF realization in 2011, up to now—when the buildings and relevant infrastructures have been completed, SPIDER is entering the integrated commissioning phase and the procurements of several MITICA components are at a well advanced stage.

Abstract: As in Tokamaks RFX-mod discharges are subject to the Greenwald density limit. The similarity between Reversed Field Pinches (RFP) and Tokamaks extends to many properties of the edge transport physics, including the electrostatic nature of turbulence, the presence of highly sheared ExB flows - sustained by the Reynolds' stress - and the presence of coherent structures emerging out of the turbulent background. The origin of the density limit in RFX-mod is sought along the legitimate idea that it should be similar to the Tokamak case. It is proposed that the poloidally symmetric and toroidally asymmetric strong radiation emission that develops where the plasma interacts with the wall, at high densities triggers a thermal instability that cools the plasma core. The process resembles the evolution of a MARFE in a Tokamak, but in the RFP the effect on the plasma core occurs well before the total radiated power approaches the (ohmic) power input and the result is a soft landing of the discharge.

Abstract: Plasma experiments resumed in December 2004 on RFX-mod. The machine now has a thin (3mm) Cu shell with one overlapped poloidal gap and one toroidal gap. Shell penetration time for Bv has been lowered from 450 to 50 ms and shell/plasma proximity from b/a=1.24 to 1.1. Toroidal equilibrium is feedback-controlled and new power supplies provide a better control of the toroidal field. Newly designed graphite tiles protect the vessel from highly localized power deposition. The MHD Control System, MHD-CS, a set of 192 external saddle coils controlled by a digital feedback system, is used to control radial fields due to field errors, MHD modes and Resistive Wall Modes (RWMs). A dramatic improvement of plasma performance was obtained by using the MHD-CS to cancel all of the radial field components, an operational mode dubbed Virtual Shell (VS). The toroidal loop voltage was lowered by more than 40% and the plasma pulse duration tripled. In practice, steady state RFP pulses are now limited only by the applied volt-seconds. Hence RFX-mod initial operation demonstrated the possibility to operate a large RFP without a thick conducting shell, and opened enhanced RFP scenarios. Indeed the improved magnetic boundary in VS mode, which mimics an ideal closely fitting shell, has an effect on the tearing modes underlying the sustainment of the RFP configuration, the so-called dynamo modes, which are also responsible for field line stochastization in the plasma core and confinement limitation. With the VS the amplitude of such modes in the plasma centre was nearly halved. As expected, this led to improved particle and energy confinement. For instance, peak electron temperature in reference pulses at 600 kA was increased from 200 to 300 eV with more peaked profiles, which corresponds to a reduction of the thermal conductivity by a factor 2 in the region r/a < 0.9. The MHD-CS is extremely flexible and can be used for a variety of mode control experiments. The most important result already obtained was the demonstration of the active control of RWMs. We found that full VS control completely inhibits the growth of RWMs, whereas such modes are indeed seen to grow in agreement with the theoretical prediction if the MHD-CS operated in Selective VS mode, i.e. leaving one or more mode helicity uncontrolled.

The basic findings are described and similarities and differences with the Tokamak case are analysed. The high-density limit occurs as a non-disruptive limit. Fast terminations have been observed but in a wide area of the operating space and therefore are unlikely to be related to the density limit. Radiation induced thermal collapse can also be ruled out being radiation losses always a relatively small fraction of the ohmic input power. The occurrence of plasma detachment while approaching the density limit can be excluded. The absence of additional heating makes it difficult to distinguish with certainty between a power balance effect and an intrinsic physical limit but the overlapping of the Greenwald limit with the upper boundary of the density operating space is however remarkable, especially in the case of He plasmas . While in Tokamaks one of the plausible causes for the limit is a transport induced edge thermal instability, in RFX, as density increases the density profile becomes hollow, inside the last closed magnetic surface particle diffusion decreases and the global energy confinement time improves. The normalised density fluctuations measured by Langmuir probes and by the outermost chords of an interferometer do not increase. Simulations of the hydrogen discharges with the RITM code confirm the importance of recycling in determining the edge density gradient and the minor role of radiation losses. Differences between H and He cases are analysed in terms of particle penetration capability and in terms of edge ExB shear. A statistical analysis of the edge density fluctuations is presented, looking for differences arising as density is increased. Finally, the possible role of pressure driven modes is discussed.

Abstract: The results of an extensive investigation of electrostatic and magnetic turbulence in the edge region of two Reversed Field Pinch (RFP) experiments EXTRAP-T2R and RFX are reported . In both experiments particle transport is mostly driven by electrostatic turbulence and a highly sheared ExB flow takes place. Recent results have shown that almost 50% of the particle losses is due to coherent structures. These structures have features reminiscent of monopolar or dipolar vortices and their relative population and preferred vorticity is determined by the local ExB shear. It has been demonstrated that the plasma diffusivity D can be separated in two comparable terms: one due to coherent structures and another one due to background turbulence. The ExB shear results to affect both terms, modifying the populations of vortices and the phase of background density and velocity fluctuations . This effect has been proved by several experiments of transport control based on modification of the ExB shear by insertion of active electrodes or by applying transient modifications of the magnetic field. In order to investigate the process responsible for the observed ExB flow profile, the momentum balance has been recently addressed and it has been found that also transport of momentum is anomalous as experimental kinematic viscosity results consistent with anomalous diffusion. Moreover the balance reveals that plasma flow profile is regulated by turbulence and in particular by the electrostatic component of the Reynolds Stress (RS). These results prove the existence of a dynamic interplay between turbulence properties, anomalous transport and mean profiles. All results are discussed highlighting the similarities with other magnetic configurations.

Abstract: The results of an extensive study on transport mechanisms and on improved confinement scenarios in RFX are reported. The scaling of the thermal conductivity in the core with the Lundquist number indicates that the magnetic field in this region is not fully stochastic, as proved by the existence of thermal barriers observed in single helicity configurations. The electrostatic transport at the edge has been proved to depend on the highly sheared E × B flow, which has been interpreted using fluid and Monte Carlo models. Regimes of improved confinement have been obtained in the core by poloidal current drive techniques, and the electrostatic transport has been reduced at the edge by biasing experiments. A radiation mantle caused by impurity seeding has been found to successfully reduce the local plasma-wall interaction without causing a significant deterioration in the plasma performance.

Abstract: This paper presents an overview of recent experimental results obtained on the RFX device. We succeeded in obtaining and study RFP plasma with a plasma current up to 1 MA with negligible radiation losses and low effective charge. The local power and particle balance shows that in standard operation the plasma core is dominated by magnetic turbulence and that the global confinement is mainly provided by the edge region where a strongly sheared radial electric field is present. With poloidal current drive the amplitude of magnetic fluctuation and the thermal conductivity of the plasma core are reduced leading to improved confinement. Reduced heat transport is also observed when the width of the n spectrum of magnetic fluctuations is reduced.

Abstract: The RFP configuration is maintained by an intrinsic dynamo mechanism associated to resistive MHD tearing modes. These dynamo modes are responsible for field line stochasticity and have a strong influence on plasma confinement. RFX results relevant to the subject are discussed both in terms of the influence of the magnetic boundary and of the characteristics of the RFP enhanced confimenement regimes. The dynamo modes are often locked in phase and to the wall, which spoils the stabilising effect of the conducting shell and leads to severe plasma-wall interactions. The driven rotation of the locked dynamo modes has been studied in RFX by means of a new Toroidal Field Modulation System. A rotating toroidally localised perturbation of the toroidal magnetic field couples to the modes and induces their rotation.

Abstract: The negative-ion based neutral beam injector for heating and current drive of the ITER plasma (ITER HNB) is under development, at present focusing on the optimization of the full-scale plasma source in the SPIDER test stand. The production of H− or D− ions in the ion source is based on the low work function surfaces obtained by caesium evaporation. This paper describes the caesium conditioning procedure and the corresponding beam performances during the first operation of SPIDER with caesium. Technical solutions to overcome present limitations of the test stand are described. The influence of source parameters on the caesium effectiveness was investigated in short beam pulse operation; with total radio-frequency (RF) power of 400 kW and filling pressure below 0.4 Pa, and a limited number of extraction apertures, a negative ion current density of about 200 A m−2 was extracted in hydrogen, with beam energy lower than 60 keV. Beam optics and beam uniformity were assessed thanks to the acceleration of isolated ion beamlets. A possible procedure to accelerate a uniform beam was demonstrated at low RF power. The results obtained in this first investigation provided key indications on the operation of one of the largest existing sources of accelerated negative hydrogen-like ions.

Abstract: Since the last IAEA conference, the scientific programme of JET has focused on the qualification of the integrated operating scenarios for ITER and on physics issues essential for the consolidation of design choices and the efficient exploitation of ITER. Particular attention has been given to the characterization of the edge plasma, pedestal energy and edge localized modes (ELMs), and their impact on plasma facing components (PFCs). Various ELM mitigation techniques have been assessed for all ITER operating scenarios using active methods such as resonant magnetic field perturbation, rapid variation of the radial field and pellet pacing. 17. Realization and Tests of Prototype Fluxgate Magnetic Sensors for the ITER Neutral Beam Injectors.

Abstract: In the ITER neutral beam injectors (NBI), the presence of an external variable magnetic field generated by the ITER tokamak itself, could deflect the ion beam during acceleration and cause a loss of beam focusing. For this reason, the ion source, the accelerator and the neutralizer will be shielded from external magnetic field by means of a passive magnetic shield and a system of active correction and compensation coils (ACCC). The ACCC will operate in a feedback control loop and thus require the measurement of magnetic field inside the NBI vessel. Magnetic sensors for this application must be capable of measuring DC and slow variable magnetic fields, and be vacuum-compatible, radiation-hard and robust, since they will be subjected to neutron flux produced by fusion reactions in the tokamak and inaccessible for maintenance. This paper describes the realization and tests of fluxgate magnetic sensors prototypes specifically designed for this purpose before the installation in MITICA and ITER.
