1. The association between lichen planus and hepatitis C virus infection: A case control study

Abstract

Background: The incidence of Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection among patients with Lichen planus (LP) varies considerably. There is also lack of data in Indian population. Due to these variation, this study is to assessing the prevalence of HCV infection among patients with CLP in Hassan Karnataka. Methods: 135 clinically diagnosed cases of Lichen planus more than 18 years of age will be included as cases.147 patients having skin diseases other than lichen planus will be included as controls. Details of the patients personal history and family history,medical history and blood transfusion history will be collected. Detection of antibodies against HCV (anti-HCV) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: Anti-HCV antibodies were found in 3(2.2%) patients of the case group and 1(0.7%) in control group. P value is 0.274, not statistically significant. Conclusion: Currently, there is no evidence confirming the relationship between HCV infection and CLP in Hassan Karnataka. However, there is a need for further research on larger groups of

3. Ion channel expression patterns in glioblastoma stem cells with functional and therapeutic implications for malignancy.

Abstract

Ion channels and transporters have increasingly recognized roles in cancer progression through the regulation of cell proliferation, migration, and death. Glioblastoma stem-like cells (GSCs) are a source of tumor formation and recurrence in glioblastoma multiforme, a highly aggressive brain cancer, suggesting that ion channel expression may be perturbed in this population. However, little is known about the expression and functional relevance of ion channels that may contribute to GSC malignancy. Using RNA sequencing, we assessed the enrichment of ion channels in GSC isolates and non-tumor neural cell types. We identified a unique set of GSC-enriched ion channels using differential expression analysis that is also associated with distinct gene mutation signatures. In support of potential clinical relevance, expression of selected GSC-enriched ion channels evaluated in human glioblastoma databases of The Cancer Genome Atlas and Ivy Glioblastoma Atlas Project correlated with patient survival times. Finally, genetic knockdown as well as pharmacological inhibition of individual or classes of GSC-enriched ion channels constrained growth of GSCs compared to normal neural stem cells. This first-in-kind global examination characterizes ion channels enriched in GSCs and explores their potential clinical relevance to glioblastoma molecular subtypes, gene mutations, survival outcomes, regional tumor expression, and experimental responses to loss-of-function. Together, the data support the potential biological and therapeutic impact of ion channels on GSC malignancy and provide strong rationale for further examination of their mechanistic and therapeutic importance.

Abstract

Subcutaneous mycoses are chronic fungal infections of the skin and subcutaneous tissues caused by variety of fungal agents and usually occur following trauma with vegetative matter. We report a case of subcutaneous mycoses caused by rare fungus belonging to the genus Rhytidhysteron, in an immunocompetent male who presented with a subcutaneous nodule on left foot. This unusual species was identified and confirmed by molecular methods.

Abstract

The main aim of this study was to ascertain the removal of chromium ions from synthetic wastewater using modified maghemite nanoparticles (MNPs). Commercially available maghemite nanoparticles (NPs) (< 50 nm) were modified using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The MNPs were characterized using a powder X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer (FTIR). Statistically designed batch experiments were carried out to evaluate the effects of various parameters, namely the pH of the solution, initial chromium concentration, and adsorbent dose, on the chromium removal efficiency (RE). The results from this study showed that the adsorbent dose had a synergistic effect on chromium RE, while pH and initial chromium concentration had antagonistic effects on the RE. An optimal chromium RE of 95.8% was obtained at pH = 2.6, adsorbent dose = 5 g/L, and initial chromium concentration = 20 mg/L. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) results showed that the model was significant, with high F value (F = 80.07) and low P value (P = < 0.001). Based on the results obtained from the experiments, the MNPs could be exploited as an efficient adsorbent for chromium removal from wastewater.

Abstract

Breathing must be tightly coordinated with other behaviours such as vocalization, swallowing, and coughing. These behaviours occur after inspiration, during a respiratory phase termed postinspiration. Failure to coordinate postinspiration with inspiration can result in aspiration pneumonia, the leading cause of death in Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, dementia, and other neurodegenerative diseases. Here we describe an excitatory network that generates the neuronal correlate of postinspiratory activity in mice. Glutamatergic-cholinergic neurons form the basis of this network, and GABA (γ-aminobutyric acid)-mediated inhibition establishes the timing and coordination relative to inspiration. We refer to this network as the postinspiratory complex (PiCo). The PiCo has autonomous rhythm-generating properties and is necessary and sufficient for postinspiratory activity in vivo.The PiCo also shows distinct responses to neuromodulators when compared to other excitatory brainstem networks. On the basis of the discovery of the PiCo, we propose that each of the three phases of breathing is generated by a distinct excitatory network: the pre-Bötzinger complex, which has been linked to inspiration; the PiCo, as described here for the neuronal control of postinspiration; and the lateral parafacial region (pF(L)), which has been associated with active expiration, a respiratory phase that is recruited during high metabolic demand.

On one hand the horizon of human rights is expanding but at the same time the crime rate is also increasing. In this context, custodial deaths are among most contentious deaths for investigation by forensic experts. These deaths sometimes invite mass resentment and condemnation. Not that always such deaths are due to unnatural or violent causes; indeed most of the time they are due to natural causes. To analyse custodial deaths from all aspects present prospective study was undertaken. A total of 135 (119 male and 16 female) cases of custodial deaths were examined in detail over a study period of 2 years. Based on place of confinement 100 cases (74.07%) died in jail custody, 33 cases (24.45%) died in mental hospital custody and in 2 cases (1.48%) death occurred in police custody. Among 92 cases (out of 135) in which final cause of death was declared, the death was natural in 95.65% while in 4.35% it was unnatural. Pulmonary tuberculosis was the most common natural cause among prison custodial deaths (22.8%, n=16). In mental hospital custody coronary artery disease (12.8%, n=9) was the leading cause of natural death. As far as unnatural deaths are concerned, there were two cases each of suicidal and accidental deaths (2.17% each) and no case of homicidal death was noticed.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) is highly endemic in India. The first-line anti-TB therapy (ATT) involving isoniazid (INH), rifampicin and pyrazinamide causes hepatotoxicity in approximately 11.5% of Indian patients. Studies have shown that ATT-induced hepatotoxicity is primarily due to oxidative stress caused by the drugs and metabolites. Herbal drugs with antioxidative properties have been tested in animal studies and clinical trials for the management of hepatotoxicity. The objective of this study was to investigate the role of curcumin (CUR), silymarin (SILY) and N-acetylcysteine ( N-ACET) on hepatotoxicity by ATT drugs using an in vitro model of human hepatocellular carcinoma cell line (HepG2). HepG2 cells were treated with ATT drugs alone or along with CUR, SILY or N-ACET for a 48-h duration. The cells were monitored for viability, morphology, respiring mitochondria and cell cycle. Our results suggest that the presence of hepatoprotective drugs during treatment of HepG2 cells with ATT drugs lowers the hepatotoxic effect of the latter. This is observed in terms of (a) increased cell viability, (b) healthy-looking cell morphology as revealed by phase contrast microscopy, (c) active respiring cells as observed with confocal microscopy upon staining with a mitochondrial membrane-specific dye, MitoTracker® Red, and reduction in the sub-G1 peak in cell cycle analysis by flow cytometry. Our results suggest that these hepatoprotective drugs need to be further explored as potential adjuvant therapy along with ATT drugs.

Abstract

We report the STAR measurement of ϕ meson production in Au + Au and p + p collisions at s N N = 200 GeV . Using the event mixing technique, the ϕ spectra and yields are obtained at mid-rapidity for five centrality bins in Au + Au collisions and for non-singly-diffractive p + p collisions. It is found that the ϕ transverse momentum distributions from Au + Au collisions are better fitted with a single-exponential while the p + p spectrum is better described by a double-exponential distribution. The measured nuclear modification factors indicate that ϕ production in central Au + Au collisions is suppressed relative to peripheral collisions when scaled by the number of binary collisions ( 〈 N bin 〉 ) . The systematics of 〈 p t 〉 versus centrality and the constant ϕ / K − ratio versus beam species, centrality, and collision energy rule out kaon coalescence as the dominant mechanism for ϕ production.

Abstract

An overview of the strangeness measurements made by the STAR collaboration at RHIC for Au-Au collisions at √s NN = 130 and 200 GeV plus p-p collisions at √s NN = 200 GeV is presented. A wealth of information has been generated on the kinematics and scale of strange particle production by this experiment. When viewed in combination a picture emerges of particles demonstrating a surprisingly high degree of collective motion, suggestive of strong internal pressure within the source which builds up rapidly. The non-resonance yields are consistent with statistical hadron formation. Although there appears to be a rapid decoupling of the source, resonance particle measurements show signs of rescattering during the hadronic phase. Meanwhile the observed suppression of high momentum probes and their large azimuthal asymmetry indicate that this hot dense matter has significant interactions with particles moving through it.

Abstract

Values of the ratios in the mid-rapidity yields of Λ / Λ =0.71±0.01( stat. )±0.04( sys. ) , Ξ + / Ξ − =0.83±0.04( stat. )±0.05( sys. ) , Ω + / Ω − =0.95±0.15( stat. )±0.05( sys. ) and K + /K − =1.092±0.023(combined) were obtained in central s NN =130 GeV Au+Au collisions using the STAR detector. The ratios indicate that a fraction of the net-baryon number from the initial system is present in the excess of hyperons over antihyperons at mid-rapidity. The trend in the progression of the baryon ratios, with increasing strange quark content, is similar to that observed in heavy-ion collisions at lower energies. The value of these ratios may be related to the charged kaon ratio in the framework of simple quark-counting and thermal models.

Abstract

The E895 Collaboration has investigated a number of mixed-particle correlations involving neutral strange particles (K0s and Λ) in 2, 4, 6 and 8 A GeV Au + Au collisions at the AGS. The first measurements for pΛ correlations indicate a correlation magnitude of about 50% with a 26 MeV width. Detailed comparisons between data and theory suggest an emitting source with an effective Gaussian radius close to 4.5 fm. This radius is much larger than the value of 2.8 fm predicted by the relativistic transport code ART. Pairs of pK0, π−Λ and π−K0 are found to display essentially zero correlation at 6 A GeV. The latter observations are not unexpected considering that the proton–K0 interaction has a very small scattering length and there are no very well known interactions between pions and Λs or K0s.

Abstract

The STAR detector has made a variety of measurements of strange and other hadronic species in Au+Au collisions at s N N = 130 GeV. A comparison of kaon and pion production enables an examination of the systematics of strangeness production with energy by comparing them to lower energy collisions. Anti-baryon to baryon ratios indicate a much reduced net-baryon density and transverse momentum spectra show that a picture of transverse expansion seems appropriate.

Abstract

Ion channels and transporters have increasingly recognized roles in cancer progression through the regulation of cell proliferation, migration, and death. Glioblastoma stem-like cells (GSCs) are a source of tumor formation and recurrence in glioblastoma multiforme, a highly aggressive brain cancer, suggesting that ion channel expression may be perturbed in this population. However, little is known about the expression and functional relevance of ion channels that may contribute to GSC malignancy. Using RNA sequencing, we assessed the enrichment of ion channels in GSC isolates and non-tumor neural cell types. We identified a unique set of GSC-enriched ion channels using differential expression analysis that is also associated with distinct gene mutation signatures. In support of potential clinical relevance, expression of selected GSC-enriched ion channels evaluated in human glioblastoma databases of The Cancer Genome Atlas and Ivy Glioblastoma Atlas Project correlated with patient survival times. Finally, genetic knockdown as well as pharmacological inhibition of individual or classes of GSC-enriched ion channels constrained growth of GSCs compared to normal neural stem cells. This first-in-kind global examination characterizes ion channels enriched in GSCs and explores their potential clinical relevance to glioblastoma molecular subtypes, gene mutations, survival outcomes, regional tumor expression, and experimental responses to loss-of-function. Together, the data support the potential biological and therapeutic impact of ion channels on GSC malignancy and provide strong rationale for further examination of their mechanistic and therapeutic importance.

Abstract

PURPOSE: To compare the efficacy of carboxymethylcellulose 0.5% (CMC), hydroxypropyl-guar containing polyethylene glycol 400/propylene glycol (PEG/PG), and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose 0.3% (HPMC) as tear substitutes in patients with dry eye. METHODS: A retrospective evaluation of cases presenting with symptoms of dry eye from July 2014 to June 2015 was done. Patients with Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) scoring >12 were included in the study. Parameters such as age, gender, Schirmer test (ST), and tear film breakup time (TBUT) were recorded on day 0, week 1, and week 4. For analysis, cases were divided into three groups; Group 1 – CMC, Group 2 – PEG/PG, and Group 3 – HPMC. RESULTS: Overall, 120 patients were included in the study. Demographic data and baseline characteristics were comparable among the groups. Group 2 had significant improvement in percentage change in OSDI (weeks 0–1, 0–4, and 1–4, P = 0.00), TBUT (weeks 0–1, P = 0.01; 0–4, P = 0.006; and 1–4, P = 0.007), and in ST (weeks 0–1, P = 0.02; 0–4, P = 0.002; and 1–4, P = 0.008) compared to Group 1 at all follow-ups. Group 3 had improvements similar to Group 2, but it was not at all follow-ups (improvement in percentage change OSDI [weeks 0–1, 0–4, and 1–4, P = 0.00], TBUT [weeks 0–1, P = 0.10; 0–4, P = 0.03; and 1–4, P = 0.04], and in ST [weeks 0–1, P = 0.007; 0–4, P = 0.03; and 1–4, P = 0.12]). No significant difference was found between Groups 2 and 3. CONCLUSIONS: Hydroxypropyl-guar containing PEG/PG and HPMC as tear substitutes are better than CMC. While HPMC was comparable to PEG/PG in subjective improvement, the objective improvement was not consistent.

Abstract

Transverse and radial flow measurements are presented for Λ hyperons along with Λ-P correlations from Au + Au collisions at AGS energies. The flow measurements are compared with those of co-produced protons. The measurements indicate that Λ hyperons flow consistently in the same direction as protons but with a smaller magnitude for all beam energies. Comparisons with RQMD calculations show that the experimentally determined Λ sideward flow is consistently larger compared with the calculated value obtained from scattering processes only. The experimental transverse flow ratio Λ/P is consistent with predictions ( 2/3) of the quark counting rule at 2 A GeV but is found to decrease with increasing beam energy. These observations may be related to the detailed features of the Λ-nucleon potential for the nuclear densities produced. At 6 A GeV, Λp correlation functions are observed to be essentially flat (within statistical uncertainty), indicating little or no correlation between Λs and co-produced protons. This suggests that Λs may have a spacetime emission pattern which is different from that for protons. Further evidence from radial flow measurements also indicates that 6 A GeV Λ hyperons (at mid-rapidity) do not share the same emitting source characteristics as co-produced protons.

Abstract

Elliptic flow from nuclear collisions is a hadronic observable sensitive to the early stages of system evolution. We report first results on elliptic flow of charged particles at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at √(sNN) = 130 GeV using the STAR Time Projection Chamber at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The elliptic flow signal, v₂, averaged over transverse momentum, reaches values of about 6% for relatively peripheral collisions and decreases for the more central collisions. This can be interpreted as the observation of a higher degree of thermalization than at lower collision energies. Pseudorapidity and transverse momentum dependence of elliptic flow are also presented.

Abstract

The first detailed measurements of the centrality dependence of strangeness production in p-A collisions are presented. {lambda} and K{sub S} dn/dy distributions from 17.5 GeV/c p-Au collisions are shown as a function of ''grey'' track multiplicity and the estimated number of collisions, {nu}, made by the proton. The {nu} dependence of the {Lambda} yield deviates from a scaling of p-p data by the number of participants, increasing faster than this scaling for {nu} {le} 5 and saturating for larger {nu}. A slower growth in K{sub S} multiplicity with {nu} is observed, consistent with a weaker {nu} dependence of KK-bar production than YK production.

Abstract

We have measured the sideward flow of neutral strange (K{sup 0}{sub s} ) mesons in 6A GeV Au +Au collisions. A prominent antiflow signal is observed for an impact parameter range (b(less-or-similar sign)7 fm ) which spans central and midcentral events. Since the K{sup 0}{sub s} scattering cross section is relatively small in nuclear matter, this observation suggests that the in-medium kaon vector potential plays an important role in high density nuclear matter. Abstract

We have measured the proton elliptic flow excitation function for the Au + Au system spanning the beam energy range 2 -- 8 AGeV. The excitation function shows a transition from negative to positive elliptic flow at a beam energy, $E_{tr} \sim$ 4 AGeV. Detailed comparisons with calculations from a relativistic Boltzmann-equation are presented. The comparisons suggest a softening of the nuclear equation of state (EOS) from a stiff form (K \sim 380 MeV) at low beam energies (E_{Beam} \le 2 AGeV) to a softer form (K \sim 210 MeV) at higher energies (E_{Beam} \ge $ 4 AGeV) where the calculated baryon density $ \rho \sim 4 \rho_0$.

Abstract

A sample of Lambda's produced in 2 A*GeV Ni + Cu collisions has been obtained with the EOS Time Projection Chamber at the Bevalac. Low background in the invariant mass distribution allows for the unambiguous demonstration of Lambda directed flow. The transverse mass spectrum at mid-rapidity has the characteristic shoulder-arm shape of particles undergoing radial transverse expansion. A linear dependence of Lambda multiplicity on impact parameter is observed, from which a total Lambda + Sigma^0 production cross section of $112 +/- 24 mb is deduced. Detailed comparisons with the ARC and RVUU models are made.

Abstract

We study the energy dependence of collective (hydrodynamic-like) nuclear matter flow in (400{endash}1970){ital A} MeV Ni+Au and (1000{endash}1970){ital A} MeV Ni+Cu reactions. The flow increases with energy, appears to reach a maximum, and then to decrease at higher energies. A way of comparing the energy dependence of flow values for different projectile-target mass combinations is introduced, which demonstrates a more-or-less common scaling behavior among flow values from different systems. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract

Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) is the most prevalent and aggressive form of cancer in the adult central nervous system. Ion channels are increasingly being linked to cancer progression through the regulation of cell proliferation and migration. However, the role of ion channels in GBM tumor formation and progression is not well understood. Glioblastoma stem-like cells (GSCs) are a source of tumor formation and recurrence, suggesting that ion channel expression may be perturbed in this population. Here, we used RNA-sequencing to assess the expression patterns of ion channels and transporters and identify uniquely enriched ion channels in GSCs. Twenty-two patient-derived GSC samples were expression profiled along with human neural stem cell (NSC) and astrocyte control cell populations. Differential expression analysis revealed a set of ion channels highly enriched in GSCs compared with controls. Real-time PCR analysis confirmed the increased expression of ion channels of interest across selected GSC lines compared to NSCs. The expression pattern of ion channel candidates was also more likely to be associated with distinct GBM molecular subtypes. Next, an integrative approach was taken to further identify ion channels unique to GSCs; the abovementioned findings were compared to results from transcriptome analyses of GBM bulk tumor cells (The Cancer Genome Atlas) and region-specific GBM cells (Ivy Glioblastoma Atlas Project). Ion channels that were identified in these analyses were associated with altered clinical outcomes. The functional implications of these expression changes were further assessed with targeted drug screening of GSCs and NSCs. Pharmacological antagonists of GSC-enriched ion channels suppressed stem cell viability. These antagonists similarly hindered BrdU incorporation of dividing GSCs, suggesting that these channels play a role in stem cell proliferative capacity. Finally, calcium imaging was used to test the real-time functional responses of GSCs to channel blockers, and these outcomes will be discussed. Collectively, these findings suggest the presence of ion channels that uniquely identify GSCs from other neural cell types and influence GSC proliferation, a hallmark of GBM tumor recurrence. Abstract

Results of a pion interferometry analysis are presented for the reactions S+C, S+S, S+Cu, S+Ag, S+Au and O+Au at 200 GeV per nucleon. Correlation functions were measured for pairs of negative pions in narrow windows of transverse momentum and rapidity, as a function of the three components of the momentum difference vector in cylindrical coordinates. The measured two-pion correlation functions suggest a space-time evolution of the system which proceeds in the following way for central nucleus-nucleus collisions. After interpenetration of the incident nuclei, the pion source expands in a boost invariant way along the collision axis. Estimates for the proper time interval between the onset of expansion and pion decoupling, as well as for the duration of pion emission are ∼ 4 fm/c and

Abstract

The versatility of a novel scaling approach in quantifying the structure of model well-defined 3-arm star polyethylene molecules is presented. Many commercial polyethylenes have long side branches, and the nature and quantity of these branches varies widely among the various forms. For instance, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is typically a highly branched structure with broad distributions in branch content, branch lengths and branch generation (in hyperbranched structures). This makes it difficult to accurately quantify the structure and the inherent structure-property relationships. To overcome this drawback, model well-defined hydrogenated polybutadiene (HPB) structures have been synthesized via anionic polymerization and hydrogenation to serve as model analogues to long-chain branched polyethylene. In this article, model 3-arm star polyethylene molecules are quantified using the scaling approach. Along with the long-chain branch content in polyethylene, the approach also provides unique measurements of long-chain branch length and hyperbranch content. Such detailed description facilitates better understanding of the effect of branching on the physical properties of polyethylene. © 2012 American Chemical Society.

Abstract

The intermittency phenomenon is investigated in proton-gold, oxygen-gold, sulphur-gold and sulphur-sulphur collisions at 200 GeV per nucleon. The data were taken with the NA 35 streamer chamber detector at the CERN SPS. The data samples are carefully corrected for double counting of tracks and for contamination from photon conversions, particle decays and secondary interactions. The analysis is carried out in terms of factorial moments, using a new definition, and of correlation integrals. Both methods show the presence of nonstatistical fluctuations (“intermittency”). The main conclusions are: The observation of the effect for pairs of hadrons with negative charges and its near absence for pairs of opposite charges is consistent with the assumption that Bose-Einstein correlations yield the dominant contribution. The “intermittency” effect is not proportional to (dn/dy)−1 which would be expected in superposition models. The measured relation between the second and third factorial moment for negative hadrons indicates that genuine 3-particle correlations are small. The predictions of a Monte Carlo simulation which is based on the Lund Fritiof model with the inclusion of Bose-Einstein correlations agree with the experimental results.

Abstract

Multiplicities and spectra of strange particles (\(\Lambda ,\bar \Lambda ,K_S^0 ,K^ +\) andK− produced in central32S+S,32S+Ag and32S+Au collisions at 200 GeV per nucleon are presented and compared with data on strange particle production in protonnucleus and nucleon-nucleon interactions. It is shown that strangeness production in32S+Ag collisions is enhanced by a factor of two, similar to that found previously in central32S+S collisions.

Abstract

Multiplicity distributions of negatively charged particles have been studied in restricted phase space intervals for central S+S, O+Au and S+Au collisions at 200 GeV/nucleon. It is shown that multiplicity distributions are well described by a negative binomial form irrespectively of the size and dimensionality of phase space domain. A clan structure analysis reveals interesting similarities between complex nuclear collisions and a simple partonic shower. The lognormal distribution agrees reasonably well with the multiplicity data in large domains, but fails in the case of small intervals. No universal scaling function was found to describe the shape of multiplicity distributions in phase space intervals of varying size.

Abstract

The TPC's (Time Projection Chamber) used in E-810 at the AGS (Alternating Gradient Synchroton) were exposed to silicon ion fluxes equivalent to more than 10{sup 7} minimum ionizing particles per second to measure the distortion of the electric field caused by positive ions in the drift region. Results of these tests are presented and the consequences for the TPC based experiment at RHIC (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider) are discussed.

Abstract

Multiplicity distributions and their second moments fornegatively charged particles produced in32S-S central and minimum bias interactions at 200A GeV are studied in various rapidity intervals. Fritiof and Venus models mostly describe the dependence of second moments on rapidity intervals in minimum bias interactions, but not in central collisions. For central collisions the behaviour of second moments might indicate enhanced multiplicity fluctuations.

Abstract

Data on multiplicities of charged particles produced in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at 200 GeV per nucleon are presented. It is shown that the mean multiplicity of negative particles is proportional to the mean number of nucleons participating in the collision both for nucleus-nucleus and proton-nucleus collisions. The apparent consistency of pion multiplicity data with the assumption of an incoherent superposition of nucleon-nucleon collisions is critically discussed.

Abstract

The design of a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) detector with complete pad coverage is presented. The TPC will allow the measurements of high multiplicity (~200 tracks), relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions initiated with the heaviest, most energetic projectiles available at the LBL BEVALAC accelerator facility. The front end electronics, composed of over 15,000 time sampling channels, will be located on the chamber.

Abstract

An analysis of the proton rapidity distribution in central {sup 16} O + Au collisions at 60 GeV/n measured in the NA35 streamer chamber detector at the CERN SPS is presented. The charge excess of positive particles over negative particles was measured. The rapidity distribution of the charge excess which can be associated with the primordial protons in the collision is studies in terms of the nuclear stopping power and is compared to the predictions of various models. 7 refs., 2 figs.

Abstract

The Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) is the primary provider of network connectivity for the US Department of Energy Office of Science, the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States of America. In support of the Office of Science programs, ESnet regularly updates and refreshes its understanding of the networking requirements of the instruments, facilities, scientists, and science programs that it serves. This focus has helped ESnet to be a highly successful enabler of scientific discovery for over 20 years. In May 2008, ESnet and the Nuclear Physics (NP) Program Office of the DOE Office of Science organized a workshop to characterize the networking requirements of the science programs funded by the NP Program Office. Most of the key DOE sites for NP related work will require significant increases in network bandwidth in the 5 year time frame. This includes roughly 40 Gbps for BNL, and 20 Gbps for NERSC. Total transatlantic requirements are on the order of 40 Gbps, and transpacific requirements are on the order of 30 Gbps. Other key sites are Vanderbilt University and MIT, which will need on the order of 20 Gbps bandwidth to support data transfers for the CMS Heavy Ion program. In addition to bandwidth requirements, the workshop emphasized several points in regard to science process and collaboration. One key point is the heavy reliance on Grid tools and infrastructure (both PKI and tools such as GridFTP) by the NP community. The reliance on Grid software is expected to increase in the future. Therefore, continued development and support of Grid software is very important to the NP science community. Another key finding is that scientific productivity is greatly enhanced by easy researcher-local access to instrument data. This is driving the creation of distributed repositories for instrument data at collaborating institutions, along with a corresponding increase in demand for network-based data transfers and the tools to manage those transfers effectively. Network reliability is also becoming more important as there is often a narrow window between data collection and data archiving when transfer and analysis can be done. The instruments do not stop producing data, so extended network outages can result in data loss due to analysis pipeline stalls. Abstract

An analysis of inclusive pion production in proton-beryllium collisions at 6.4, 12.3, and 17.5 GeV/c proton beam momentum has been performed. The data were taken by Experiment 910 at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. The differential $\pi^+$ and $\pi^-$ production cross sections ($d^2\sigma/dpd\Omega$) are measured up to 400 mRad in $\theta_{\pi}$ and up to 6 GeV/c in $p_{\pi}$. The measured cross section is fit with a Sanford-Wang parameterization., Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. C

Abstract

The production of Λ, $$\bar \Lambda$$ andK 0 has been studied in 200 GeV/nucleonp+S and S+S collisions in the streamer chamber of the NA35 experiment at the CERN SPS. Significant enhancement of the multiplicities of all observed strange particles relative to negative hadrons was observed in central S+S collisions, as compared top+p andp+S collisions. The latter collisions show no overall (relative) strangeness enhancement overp+p, but the rapidity distributions and hadron multiplicities indicate some secondary cascading production of Λ particles in thep+S andp+Au collisions. The Λ polarization in central S+S collisions was found to be compatible with zero up top T =2 GeV/c.

Abstract

SUMMARYThe distribution ofBurkholderia pseudomalleiwas determined in soil collected from a rural district in Papua New Guinea (PNG) where melioidosis had recently been described, predominately affecting children. In 274 samples, 2·6% tested culture-positive forB. pseudomallei. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis usingSpeI digests and rapid polymorphic DNA PCR with five primers demonstrated a single clone amongst clinical isolates and isolates cultured from the environment that was commonly used by children from whom the clinical isolates were derived. We concluded that individuals in this region most probably acquired the organism through close contact with the environment at these sites.Burkholderia thailandensis, a closely relatedBurkholderiasp. was isolated from 5·5% of samples tested, an observation similar to that of melioidosis-endemic areas in Thailand. This is the first report of an environmental reservoir for melioidosis in PNG and confirms the Balimo district in PNG as melioidosis endemic.

Abstract

Charged hadrons in 0.15 4 GeV/c are reconstructed in pp and Au+Au collisions at {radical}(s{sub NN})=200 GeV. The associated multiplicity and p{sub perpendicular} magnitude sum are found to increase from pp to central Au+Au collisions. The associated p{sub perpendicular} distributions, while similar in shape on the nearside, are significantly softened on the awayside in central Au+Au relative to pp and not much harder than that of inclusive hadrons. The results, consistent with jet quenching, suggest that the awayside fragments approach equilibration with the medium traversed.

Abstract

Uveitis is a major cause of visual impairment. Experimental autoimmune uveitis mimics the clinical conditions of posterior uveitis in many ways. T-cells (particularly CD4+ helper-T-cells) have been shown to play an important role in pathogenesis of experimental and clinical uveitis. Based on the pattern of cytokine they secrete, CD4+ helper cells have been divided into Th1 and Th2 subsets. Various Th1 and Th2 cytokines appear to be involved in the pathogenesis and/or recovery from uveitis. This article discusses in detail the uveitopathogenic and therapeutic potential of Th1 and Th2 cytokines in experimental and clinical uveitis.

Abstract

Results on high transverse momentum charged particle emission with respect to the reaction plane are presented for Au + Au collisions at square root s(NN)=200 GeV. Two- and four-particle correlations results are presented as well as a comparison of azimuthal correlations in Au + Au collisions to those in p + p at the same energy. The elliptic anisotropy v(2) is found to reach its maximum at p(t) approximately 3 GeV/c, then decrease slowly and remain significant up to p(t) approximately 7-10 GeV/c. Stronger suppression is found in the back-to-back high-p(t) particle correlations for particles emitted out of plane compared to those emitted in plane. The centrality dependence of v(2) at intermediate p(t) is compared to simple models based on jet quenching.
