There have been three times more attacks to naval ships using sea mines than all other forms combined. Sea mines have always been viewed upon as underhanded and unchivalrous, yet they provide a weaker navy the capability to stall and damage a vastly superior navy. Utilizing unmanned sensors to detect sea mines is the goal of the navy for the future. Computer-aided detection (CAD) of sea mines is much faster and more consistent than a human operator, yet it is not currently being utilized by any of our mine countermeasure assets. Although there are many studies that have incorporated computer aided detection and classification algorithms with sonar imagery for mine warfare, few have used Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR). During an amphibious assault scenario the ability to land assets quickly and mitigate risk is vital to the success. This thesis analyzes Rapid Overt Aerial Reconnaissance data from an Office of Naval Research experiment by Fort Walton Beach, FL. The purpose of this thesis is to perform a cost-effectiveness analysis on proposals, submitted by vendors, for a telecommunication system. This thesis will be used as a guide in the decision-making process of choosing the most cost-effective system for the Bachelor Officers Quarters of the Naval Postgraduate School. Ammonium ion was selectively separated by ion exclusion from alkali metal and alkaline earth metal cations. The detection sensitivity of the ammonium ion was improved about 11-fold with two ion exchange enhancement columns inserted in series between the separation column packed with OH--form anion-exchange resin and the detector. The first enhancement column packed with Cl--form anion-exchange resin converts ammonium hydroxide to ammonium chloride and the second enhancement column packed with H+-form cation-exchange resin converts ammonium chloride to hydrogen chloride of much higher limiting equivalent conductivity. The calibration curve of ammonium ion detected as hydrogen chloride was linear over the concentration range of 10 to 100 ppm. The method provides a fast, selective, and sensitivity way to determine the ammonium ion in biological nitrification-denitrification process water.

A Fontan operation was performed on a 10-year-old child for correction of tricuspid atresia. A xenograft, valved conduit was used to establish continuity between the right atrium and the small right ventricle. Atrial and ventricular septal defects were repaired with Dacron patches. Two hours postoperatively, the patient suffered a cardiac arrest secondary to hypoxia and was successfully resuscitated. Partial recurrence of a right-to-left shunt at the atrial level necessitated the patient's return to surgery. The insufficient conduit was replaced and the leaking patches were resutured. The conduit was shortened to one-third its length, and the conduit valve was repositioned directly at the proximal end, over the right atriotomy. Ten months postoperatively, the patient remains in stable condition.

Anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery was diagnosed in an infant girl who had evidence of transmural myocardial infarction of the free wall of the left ventricle. At age 13 months, she underwent a palliative left Vineberg implant, and remained asymptomatic until she was 8 years of age. At that time, she underwent suturing of the left coronary ostium for obliteration of the left coronary shunt at the pulmonary artery. At age 13, she underwent aortocoronary bypass to the left main coronary artery, with end-to-end anastomosis. The patient remains asymptomatic to date. We believe that this is the first reported case of a Vineberg operation performed in an infant for palliation of an anomalous left coronary artery originating from the pulmonary artery. This method allows time for the development of collateral circulation to the left coronary artery before definitive surgery is performed.

In the intensive care unit immediately after a triple aortocoronary bypass procedure, a 62-year-old man presented with copious amounts of frothy secretions in the endotracheal tube, became severely hypotensive, and remained hypoxic in the presence of maximum respiratory support. Chest roentgenograms showed pronounced pulmonary edema. Prior to leaving the operating room, the patient had received 1 unit of whole blood. A leukoagglutinin reaction to this blood transfusion was determined to be the cause of the pulmonary edema. When the patient continued to deteriorate after administration of diuretics, vasopressors, corticosteroids, albumin, and maximum respiratory support, the Sci-Med membrane oxygenator was inserted by the right femoral vein-artery. Bypass was continued for approximately 8 hours, until the PaO2 increased and the patient's condition stabilized. We think this is the first reported case of membrane oxygenation for treatment of noncardiogenic pulmonary edema due to leukoagglutinin reaction. It indicates the need for early diagnosis and utilization of the membrane oxygenator when other methods of treatment fail.
