Abstract

Perennial plants create productive and biodiverse hotspots, known as fertile islands, beneath their canopies. These hotspots largely determine the structure and functioning of drylands worldwide. Despite their ubiquity, the factors controlling fertile islands under conditions of contrasting grazing by livestock, the most prevalent land use in drylands, remain virtually unknown. Here we evaluated the relative importance of grazing pressure and herbivore type, climate and plant functional traits on 24 soil physical and chemical attributes that represent proxies of key ecosystem services related to decomposition, soil fertility, and soil and water conservation. To do this, we conducted a standardized global survey of 288 plots at 88 sites in 25 countries worldwide. We show that aridity and plant traits are the major factors associated with the magnitude of plant effects on fertile islands in grazed drylands worldwide. Grazing pressure had little influence on the capacity of plants to support fertile islands. Taller and wider shrubs and grasses supported stronger island effects. Stable and functional soils tended to be linked to species-rich sites with taller plants. Together, our findings dispel the notion that grazing pressure or herbivore type are linked to the formation or intensification of fertile islands in drylands. Rather, our study suggests that changes in aridity, and processes that alter island identity and therefore plant traits, will have marked effects on how perennial plants support and maintain the functioning of drylands in a more arid and grazed world.

Abstract

Grazing represents the most extensive use of land worldwide. Yet its impacts on ecosystem services remain uncertain because pervasive interactions between grazing pressure, climate, soil properties, and biodiversity may occur but have never been addressed simultaneously. Using a standardized survey at 98 sites across six continents, we show that interactions between grazing pressure, climate, soil, and biodiversity are critical to explain the delivery of fundamental ecosystem services across drylands worldwide. Increasing grazing pressure reduced ecosystem service delivery in warmer and species-poor drylands, whereas positive effects of grazing were observed in colder and species-rich areas. Considering interactions between grazing and local abiotic and biotic factors is key for understanding the fate of dryland ecosystems under climate change and increasing human pressure. 10. Top-down vs bottom-up control influenced by productivity in a North Derbyshire, UK, dale

Abstract

Fretwell and Oksanen's theory of trophic dynamics was tested in two plant communities located in a North Derbyshire dale, including: (1) a low productivity calcareous grassland; and, (2) a highly productiveUrtica dioica (nettle) patch. Two methods (herbivore removal throughpesticide application, and transplanting established, intact turves (0.5 m2) between the two community types) were employed, and analysed in a two-way ANOVA, to test the hypothesis that highly productive communities are controlled by 'top-down' forces and low productivity communities are controlled by 'bottom- up' forces. The Fretwell-Oksanen theory proposes that herbivores limit growth in low productivity communities, not highly productive communities. Therefore, removal of herbivores will result in an increase in plant biomass only in the low productivity community. The results presented in this paper support the Fretwell-Oksanen hypothesis. Furthermore, when small turves were transplanted from the highly productive community to the low productivity community the removal of herbivores through pesticide application greatly increased the above-ground plant biomass. This result suggests, firstly that the vegetation grown in a highly productive environment is generally very palatable, and secondly, it strengthens the evidence that herbivores are limiting plant growth in low productivity communities but not highly productive communities. Individual plant species response to herbivore removal was related to known relative growth rate values using linear regression and was found to be significant in one case: nettle turves transplanted into the grassland. In this case, relative growth rate accounted for 68.3% of the variation in the response of the plants to herbivore removal. This suggests that fast-growing plants from a highly productive environment are most likely to respond to the release of a limiting factor, in thiscase herbivory, within a community. Abstract

Trophic interactions were investigated on herbaceous communities in a limestone dale in Northern England. Manipulative experiments involved the application of molluscicides and foliar and soil insecticides along natural productivity gradients. The results supported the theories of Fretwell and Oksanen in which trophic dynamics are predicted to be dependent upon primary productivity. Furthermore, the results extend the Fretwell-Oksanen model by the inclusion of invertebrates, and the applicability of the model to the small, individual habitat scale. At very low productivity, the vegetation was dominated by slow-growing, unpalatable species and did not experience a detectable amountof herbivory. In circumstances of high productivity, 'top-down' control of herbivores by carnivores appeared to protect the resident fast-growing and relatively palatable perennials from herbivory. Vegetation of intermediate productivity responded strongly to the removal of herbivores; here we conclude that herbivore pressure is high because productivity is insufficient to sustain a high intensity of 'top-down' control from carnivores. 12. The impact of elevated CO2 on plant-herbivore interactions: experimental evidence of moderating effects at the community level.

Abstract

Surprisingly little research has been published on the responses to elevated [CO2] at the community level, where herbivores can select their preferred food. We investigated the combined effects of atmospheric [CO2] and herbivory on synthesised plant communities growing on soils of different fertility. Factorial combinations of two [CO2] (350 or 700 l l−1), two fertility (fertilised or non-fertilised), and two herbivory (herbivores present or absent) treatments were applied to a standard mixture of seven fast- and eight slow-growing plants in outdoor microcosms. The herbivores used were the grain aphid ( Sitobion avenae) and the garden snail ( Helix aspersa). We measured plant biomass, foliar nitrogen and soluble tannin concentration, aphid fecundity, and snail growth, fecundity, and feeding preferences over one growing season. Elevated [CO2] did not have a significant impact on (1) the combined biomass of fast-growing or slow-growing plants, (2) herbivore feeding preferences, or (3) herbivore fitness. There was, however, a significant biomass increase of Carex flacca (which represented in all cases less than 5% of total live biomass), and some chemical changes in unpalatable plants under elevated [CO2]. The herbivory treatment significantly increased the biomass of slow-growing plants over fast-growing plants, whereas fertilisation significantly increased the abundance of fast-growing plants over slow-growing plants. Predictions on the effects of elevated [CO2] based on published single-species experiments were not supported by the results of this microcosm study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
