7. Effects of Computer Animation Exercises on Student Cognitive Processes.

Abstract

A study examining the effects of computer animation exercises on cognitive development asked two groups of seventh graders to create computer animations, working from a simple mythic text. The ability of students to create narrative scenarios from this mythic text was analyzed. These scenarios were then recreated in the school computer lab, using Autodesk Multimedia Explorer software. Computer lab sessions were videotaped, and student dialogues tape-recorded in an effort to observe student problem solving techniques. Recurring strategies were observed over the course of the study. Students chose reductionist, literal, or transformational paths in completing their assignments. The importance of transactional dialogue between partners in developing story-lines and solving problems was recorded. Most students exhibited an ability to use the animation program for problem solving. However, in a few students, a relationship between perception and sequencing problems in the cognitive development process was observed. Students exhibiting this combination of developmental problems had difficulty with the manipulation of the computer program. This was contrasted with students who were able to use the program for sophisticated symbol manipulation. The role of computer animation in the language arts curriculum as a tool for the development of student narrative skills was also substantiated. (Contains 27 references.) (Author/TB)

Abstract

Background: Sox (Sry-related high-mobility-group box) genes represent important factors in animal development. Relatively little, however, is known about the embryonic expression patterns and thus possible function(s) of Sox genes during ontogenesis in panarthropods (Arthropoda+Tardigrada+Onychophora). To date, studies have been restricted exclusively to higher insects, including the model system Drosophila melanogaster, with no comprehensive data available for any other arthropod group, or any tardigrade or onychophoran. Results: This study provides a phylogenetic analysis of panarthropod Sox genes and presents the first comprehensive analysis of embryonic expression patterns in the flour beetle Tribolium castaneum (Hexapoda), the pill millipede Glomeris marginata (Myriapoda), and the velvet worm, Euperipatoides kanangrensis (Onychophora). 24 Sox genes were identified and investigated: 7 in Euperipatoides, 8 in Glomeris, and 9 in Tribolium. Each species possesses at least one ortholog of each of the five expected Sox gene families, B, C, D, E, and F, many of which are differentially expressed during ontogenesis. Conclusion: Sox gene expression (and potentially function) is highly conserved in arthropods and their closest relatives, the onychophorans. Sox B, C and D class genes appear to be crucial for nervous system development, while the Sox B genes Dichaete (D) and Sox21b likely play an additional conserved role in panarthropod segmentation. The Sox B gene Sox21a likely has a conserved function in foregut and Malpighian tubule development, at least in Hexapoda. The data further suggest that Sox D and E genes are involved in mesoderm differentiation, and that Sox E genes are involved in gonadal development. The new data expand our knowledge about the expression and implied function of Sox genes to Mandibulata (Myriapoda+Pancrustacea) and Panarthropoda (Arthropoda+Onychophora). Abstract

The purpose of this essay is to highlight the importance of biography as a means to forging a “total history”. It defends the merits of biographical studies by emphasizing what it allows us to discover in terms of public, private, social, economic, legal, diplomatic, military and cultural history. Based on the success of a selection of recent biographies that have revolutionized the way the historiography has interpreted 19th century Mexico, together with a personal reflection by the author based on his experience as a biographer, this article aims to show how biography can be a particularly versatile vehicle for reviewing our knowledge of the past. This article concludes with a call to the new generation of academics interested in the history of 19th century history, urging them to make up for the current lack of biographies, and help us better understand –in a way only a biography can– the reasons behind the many forgotten events of the 19th century., El propósito de este ensayo es resaltar la importancia de la biografía como método para hacer “una historia total”. Se defienden los méritos de los estudios biográficos al hacerse hincapié en lo que nos permiten descubrir en términos de historia pública y privada, política, social, económica, jurídi- ca, diplomática, militar y cultural. A partir de los logros de una selección de biografías recientes que ha revolucionado la manera en que la historiografía ha interpretado el siglo xix mexicano, y una reflexión personal del autor ba- sado en su propia experiencia como biógrafo, se busca demostrar aquí cómo la biografía es un vehículo particularmente versátil para revisar nuestro co- nocimiento del pasado. El presente trabajo concluye con un llamado dirigido a la nueva generación de académicos interesados en la historia del México decimonónico, para que se ocupe de corregir la actual carencia de biografías, y nos ayude a entender mejor, y de un modo del que sólo la biografía es capaz, el por qué y cómo de numerosos eventos olvidados del siglo xix.

Tras la guerra de Independencia (1810-1821) estallaron más de 1 500 pronunciamientos entre el Plan de Iguala de 1821 y el Plan de Tuxtepec de 1876. En varios casos degeneraron en enfrentamientos de una violencia atroz como el saqueo del Parián en la ciudad de México de 1828. En otros resultaron en guerras civiles brutales (1832, 1854-1855, 1858-1860). En muchos casos, sin embargo, sus demandas fueron atendidas o sofocadas dependiendo de cuántos pronunciamientos de adhesión recibieron. Este artículo busca redefinir la práctica del pronunciamiento en México, haciendo hincapié en el protagonismo que tuvieron grupos e instituciones civiles al adoptar este medio legítimo, aunque no constitucional, para forzar cambios políticos tanto a nivel regional como nacional durante las primeras décadas nacionales.
