This study develops a new class of Euler-buckled beam based nonlinear energy sink (EBNES) with three configurations, which is expected to attenuate the disturbance effects and further enhance vibration suppression under launching and on-orbit loads simultaneously. The effects of different arrangements on amplitude-frequency responses of the primary system are derived and analyzed through complexification-averaging method, and the approximate solutions are verified by fourth-order Runge Kutta method. Comparison results exhibit that the EBNES-I is much more effective with enhanced vibration reduction performance and stability in a broad frequency range. Furthermore, a two-degree-of-freedom dynamic model of the flywheel system, which integrates the EBNES-I and the supporting structure in satellite, is established. The vibration reduction and bifurcation behaviors of the proposed EBNES-I are investigated, and the efficiency of the proposed EBNES-I in vibration reduction of the flywheel is compared to that of a traditional cubic-stiffness-type NES. It is found that the EBNES-I exhibits a good vibration reduction performance on the dynamic responses of the flywheel system in launching and on-orbit stage simultaneously. Additionally, the bifurcations of the coupled system are studied in order to investigate the influences of gravity and excitation amplitudes on the stability of the EBNES. We evaluated the effects of post-activation performance enhancement through flywheel exercise with varying inertial loads compared to traditional resistance exercise on countermovement jump performance and muscle recruitment. In a randomized crossover design, 13 trained men completed four main experimental trials after three familiarization sessions. These conditions included a traditional trial consisting of 5 sets of 1 repetition using the Smith machine (SM) squat at 90% 1RM, and three flywheel ergometer trials. Each flywheel protocol consisted of 3 sets of 8 repetitions with 3-minute rest intervals between sets, utilizing one of three inertial loads (0.0465, 0.0784, and 0.1568 kg · m2 for light, moderate, and heavy, respectively). Participants performed countermovement jumps before (baseline), immediately after (0 minute), and at the fourth (+4 minutes), eighth (+8 minutes), and twelfth (+12 minutes) minute following exercise. Compared to baseline, jump height was higher at +4 minutes for SM squats (p = 0.009). All flywheel conditions exhibited higher jump heights at +4 minutes (p < 0.05), +8 minutes (p < 0.001), and +12 minutes (p < 0.001) compared to baseline. Additionally, moderate and heavy loads resulted in higher jump heights at 0 minute (both p < 0.001). Integrated electromyographic activity values, a proxy for muscle recruitment, were significantly higher for the gluteus maximus muscle at both +8 minutes and +12 minutes for moderate (both p = 0.004) and heavy loads (p ≤ 0.002) compared to SM squats. Overall, flywheel protocols produce greater post-activation performance enhancement, extend the time window for improvement, and recruit more active musculature compared to heavy-load SM squats, particularly with heavier loads acting as a stronger preload stimulus. Compared to traditional, static-based flywheel systems, vehicle-mounted magnetic suspension flywheels face more complex operating conditions, and existing control strategies usually regard disturbances in vehicles under different operating conditions to be the same problem. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the interference from complex operating conditions and reasonably distinguish among them under different operating conditions to provide flywheel systems with strong stability (the rotor offset was less than 0.025 mm). Thus, this paper proposes a high-stability control strategy for flywheels based on the classification of vehicle-driving conditions and designs its control strategy by taking the vehicle-mounted magnetic suspension flywheel with a virtual inertia spindle as an example. First, according to the different vehicle working conditions and the varying interference intensities affecting the flywheel system, the working mode is divided into four modes. Considering the obvious differences in each working mode, it is proposed to use BP neural network optimization based on the simulated annealing algorithm (SA-BPNN) to determine the flywheel's working condition. A relatively simple neural network can improve the response speed of the whole system. It also has a good effect. Secondly, it is proposed to use deep learning models based on convolutional neural networks, long short-term memory networks and attention mechanisms (CNN+LSTM+ATTENTION) to train the corresponding control parameters under each working condition to judge and predict the control parameters under different working conditions. Three evaluation parameters are used to evaluate the training results, and all achieved good results. Finally, the classification of working conditions and performance tests are carried out. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the effects of inertial flywheel training and accentuated eccentric loading training on the neuromuscular performance of well-trained male college sprinters. Fourteen sprinters were recruited and randomly assigned to either the flywheel training (FWT, n = 7) group or the accentuated eccentric loading training (AELT, n = 7) group. The FWT group completed four sets of 2 + 7 repetitions of flywheel squats, whereas the AELT group performed four sets of seven repetitions of barbell squats (concentric/eccentric: 80%/120% 1RM). Both groups underwent an eight-week squat training program, with two sessions per week. A two-way repeated ANOVA analysis was used to find differences between the two groups and between the two testing times (pre-test vs. post-test). The results indicated significant improvements in all measured variables for the FWT group: 1RM (5.0%, ES = 1.28), CMJ (13.3%, ES = 5.42), SJ (6.0%, ES = 2.94), EUR (6.5%, ES = 4.42), SLJ (2.9%, ES = 1.77), and 30 m sprint (−3.4%, ES = −2.80); and for the AELT group: 1RM (6.3%, ES = 2.53), CMJ (7.4%, ES = 3.44), SJ (6.4%, ES = 2.21), SLJ (2.2%, ES = 1.20), and 30 m sprint (−3.0%, ES = −1.84), with the exception of EUR (0.9%, ES = 0.63, p = 0.134), showing no significant difference. In addition, no significant interaction effects between group and time were observed for 1RM back squat, SJ, SLJ, and 30 m sprint (p > 0.05). Conversely, a significant interaction effect between group and time was observed for both CMJ and EUR (p < 0.001); post hoc analysis revealed that the improvements in CMJ and EUR were significantly greater in the FWT group compared to the AELT group (p < 0.001). These findings indicate that both FWT and AELT are effective at enhancing lower-body strength, power, and speed in well-trained male college sprinters, with FWT being particularly more effective in promoting elastic energy storage and the full utilization of the stretch–shortening cycle. In order to solve the problem of frequency modulation power deviation caused by the randomness and fluctuation of wind power outputs, a method of auxiliary wind power frequency modulation capacity allocation based on the data decomposition of a "flywheel + lithium battery" hybrid-energy storage system was proposed. Firstly, the frequency modulation power deviation caused by the uncertainty of wind power is decomposed by the successive variational mode decomposition (SVMD) method, and the mode function is segmented and reconstructed by high and low frequencies. Secondly, a mathematical model is established to maximize the economic benefit of energy storage considering the frequency modulation mileage, and quantum particle swarm optimization is used to solve the target model considering the charging and discharging power of energy storage and the charging state constraints to obtain the optimal hybrid-energy storage configuration. Finally, the simulation results show that, in the step disturbance, the Δfmax of the hybrid-energy storage mode is reduced by 37.9% and 15.3%, respectively, compared with single-energy storage. Under continuous disturbance conditions, compared with the single-energy storage mode, the Δfp_v is reduced by 52.73%, 43.72%, 60.71%, and 47.62%, respectively. To solve the problem that the poor accuracy of long-term prediction relying on model accuracy for the filter-based prediction method, a fusion fault prediction algorithm based on filter and long short-term memory (LSTM) network is proposed to achieve the prediction of spacecraft flywheel slowly growing faults. Firstly, a mini-batch normalization LSTM network and a trend recognition module are designed, which are connected in series to form a neural network predictor to improve the time series prediction accuracy. Then, the Kalman filter update process is improved by the recursive least square (RLS) parameter estimation principle to enhance the robustness for time series prediction error. On this basis, the predicted values output by the neural network predictor are fused with the improved filter. Prediction residual can be obtained for iterative updating and prediction, overcoming the dependence of the filter algorithm on the model and improving prediction accuracy. Finally, the time series predictive performance of three neural network predictors are analyzed by simulation experiments. And considering the degradation fault of flywheel bearing performance, the proposed fusion prediction algorithm is used to determine that the flywheel degrades to a threshold at 856 s, with a prediction time error of 36 s. The simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm for slowly growing fault.

Monitoring the strain in the rotating flywheel in a kinetic energy storage system is important for safe operation and for the investigation of long-term effects in composite materials like carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics. An optoelectronic strain-measurement system for contactless deformation and position monitoring of a flywheel was investigated. The system consists of multiple optical sensors measuring the local relative in-plane displacement of the flywheel rotor. A special reflective pattern, which is necessary to interact with the sensors, was applied to the surface of the rotor. Combining the measurements from multiple sensors makes it possible to distinguish between the deformation and in-plane displacement of the flywheel. The sensor system was evaluated using a low-speed steel rotor for single-sensor performance investigation as well as a scaled-down high-speed rotor made from PVC plastic. The PVC rotor exhibits more deformation due to centrifugal stresses than a steel or aluminum rotor of the same dimensions, which allows experimental measurements at a smaller flywheel scale as well as a lower rotation speed. Deformation measurements were compared to expected deformation from calculations. The influence of sensor distance was investigated. An investigation on a flywheel is presented based on finite element modelling simulations for different geometries. The goal was to optimise the energy density (rotational energy-to-mass ratio) and, at the same time, the rotational energy of a flywheel rotor. The stress behaviour of flywheel rotors under the rotational speed at the maximum stress achievable by the flywheel was analysed. Under this condition, the energy density was obtained for the different geometries, as well as the rotational energy. The best energy density performance due to geometry was achieved with a flywheel rotor presenting a new Gaussian section, which is different from the known Laval disk shape. The best results using a single disk involved a rotational speed of nearly 279,000 rpm and a rotational energy density around 1584 kJ/kg (440 Wh/kg). These values still yielded low total energy; to increase its value, two or three rotors were added to the flywheel, which were analysed in regard to stability. In particular, the triple rotor energy density was ≈ 1550 kJ/kg (431 Wh/kg). As some instability was found in these rotors, a solution using reinforcement was developed to avoid such instabilities. The energy density of such a reinforced double rotor neared 1451 kJ/kg (403 Wh/kg), and the system achieved higher total energy. The material assumed for the devices was carbon fibre Hexcel UHM 12,000, a material kept constant throughout the simulations to allow comparison among the different geometries. With the continuous improvement of the performance and capabilities of spacecrafts, the application of active magnetic bearings (AMBs) has become a major focus in current research. The AMBs-flywheel system is not only responsible for attitude control but also provides the required energy during shadow periods. In magnetically suspended single gimbal control moment gyroscope (SGCMG), self-excited vibration caused by high-speed rotor rotation significantly affects the stability of the AMB system. The research focus lies in magnetically supporting the flywheel at high speeds with low power consumption to explore gyroscopic mechanics at ultra-high speeds and assess the corresponding stability. This study presents an assessment of the stability performance of a high-speed flywheel equipped on a single gimbal with an angular momentum of 75 Nm. To achieve ultra-high-speed operation under low driving power, a high-precise dynamic balance was performed followed by a novel unbalance control strategy of a radial and axial automatic balancing algorithm to suppress effectively synchronous vibrations due to nutation and precession. Corresponding experiments including static stable suspension experiments as well as low-speed, high-speed, and series-based stability assessments were conducted. Stable suspension at any speed ranging from 0 to 30,000 r/min was successfully implemented. The stability performance of the high-speed flywheel on a rotating platform at different gimbal speeds was verified, with a maximum speed reaching 31,200 r/min. The flywheel is a widespread mechanical component used for the storage of kinetic energy and angular momentum. It typically consists of cylindrical inertia rotating about its axis on rolling bearings, which involves undesired friction, lubrication, and wear. This paper presents an alternative mechanism that is functionally equivalent to a classical flywheel while relying exclusively on limited-stroke flexure joints. This novel one-degree-of-freedom zero-force mechanism has no wear and requires no lubrication: it is thus compatible with extreme environments, such as vacuum, cryogenics, or ionizing radiation. The mechanism is composed of two coupled pivoting rigid bodies whose individual angular momenta vary during motion but whose sum is constant at all times when the pivoting rate is constant. The quantitative comparison of the flexure-based flywheel to classical ones based on a hollow cylinder as inertia shows that the former typically stores 6 times less angular momentum and kinetic energy for the same mass while typically occupying 10 times more volume. The freedom of design of the shape of the rigid bodies offers the possibility of modifying the ratio of the stored kinetic energy versus angular momentum, which is not possible with classical flywheels. For example, a flexure-based flywheel with rigid pivoting bodies in the shape of thin discs stores 100 times more kinetic energy than a classical flywheel with the same angular momentum. Hybrid energy storage systems and multiple energy storage devices represent enhanced flexibility and resilience, making them increasingly attractive for diverse applications, including critical loads. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of recent technological advancements in high-power storage devices, including lithium-ion batteries, recognized for their high energy density. This paper presents the development of an airport bipolar DC microgrid and its interconnected operations with the utility grid, electric vehicle (EV), and more electric aircraft (MEA). The microgrid DC-bus voltage is established by the main sources, photovoltaic (PV) and fuel cell (FC), via unidirectional three-level (3L) boost converters. The proposed one-cycle control (OCC)-based current control scheme and quantitative and robust voltage control scheme are proposed to yield satisfactory responses. Moreover, the PV maximum power point tracking (MPPT) with FC energy-supporting approach is developed to have improved renewable energy extraction characteristics. The equipped hybrid energy storage system (HESS) consists of an energy-type battery and a power-type flywheel; each device is interfaced to the common DC bus via its own 3L bidirectional interface converter. The energy-coordinated operation is achieved by the proposed droop control. A dump load leg is added to avoid overvoltage due to an energy surplus. The grid-connected energy complementary operation is conducted using a neutral point clamped (NPC) 3L three-phase inverter. In addition to the energy support from grid-to-microgrid (G2M), the reverse mcrogrid-to-grid (M2G) operation is also conductible. Moreover, microgrid-to-vehicle (M2V) and vehicle-to-microgrid (V2M) bidirectional operations can also be applicable. The droop control is also applied to perform these interconnected operations. For the grounded aircraft, bidirectional microgrid-to-aircraft (M2A)/aircraft-to-microgrid (A2M) operations can be performed. The aircraft ground power unit (GPU) function can be preserved by the developed microgrid. The primary aim of this study was to investigate the intra- and inter-day reliability of flywheel cluster set training in concentric power (CON), eccentric power (ECC), and ECC overload during the Romanian deadlift exercise (RDL). A secondary aim was to assess the acute effect of internal and external attentional focus instructions on mean power when performing the flywheel RDL. Fourteen collegiate male field sport athletes (age, 23.3 ± 3.7 years; mass, 80.8 ± 9.9 kg; height, 1.79 ± 0.06 m) were randomized into internal (n = 7) or external (n = 7) attentional focus groups and attended four testing sessions, with a between-session separation of 7 days. Sessions consisted of four cluster sets of fifteen repetitions "excluding momentum repetitions" (4 × (5 + 5 + 5)) using a specific inertial load (0.025, 0.050, 0.075, and 0.100 kg·m−2) for a given set in a randomized ascending or descending order. Cluster sets were separated by a 45 s intra-set rest period. Both instructional focus groups attained familiarization, although the time taken to achieve familiarization (outcome stability) differed between groups. The external instructional group attained familiarization post-session 2 (Cohen's d (ES), ES = 0.11–0.65) with little volatility between performance measures (CV% = 4.61–9.59). Additionally, the internal group reported inconsistencies among all inertial loads, reporting large differences in MP in the 0.100 kg·m−2 inertial load from day 2 to day 3 (ES = 1.22) and both 0.050 kg·m2 (p = 0.010) and 0.075 kg·m−2 (p = 0.016) between day 3 and day 4. Most haptic actuators available on the market today can generate only a single modality of stimuli. This ultimately limits the capacity of a kinaesthetic haptic controller to deliver more expressive feedback, requiring a haptic controller to integrate multiple actuators to generate complex haptic stimuli, with a corresponding complexity of construction and control. To address this, we designed a haptic controller to deliver several modalities of kinaesthetic haptic feedback using a single actuator: a flywheel, the orientation of which is controlled by two gimbals capable of rotating over 360 degrees, in combination with a flywheel brake. This enables the controller to generate multiple haptic feedback modalities, such as torque feedback, impact simulation, low-frequency high-amplitude vibrations, inertial effects (the sensation of momentum), and complex haptic output effects such as the experience of vortex-like forces (whirl effects). By combining these diverse haptic effects, the controller enriches the haptic dimension of VR environments. A closed-loop integrated model including micro-vibration disturbance, dynamic characteristics of satellite, optical system of star sensor and attitude control algorithm is established. The control torque error caused by additional disturbance torque and the star sensor imaging error caused by structural resonance is fully integrated analyzed, which are firstly presented into the attitude control system (ACS). Steady-state and transient response analyses are completed to evaluate the impact of such two errors on performances of (ACS). Steady-state response results show that the effect of control torque error appears in lower frequency band with a peak of 6.784E-8″ at 53 Hz, while influence of star sensor imaging error on attitude determination mainly concentrates in high frequency band with maximum response of 0.4101″ at 315 Hz. Transient response results show that the two errors will not significantly affect control indicators such as rise time, overshoot and peak time. The results indicate that the influence of star sensor imaging error is non-negligible for satellite ACS which required milli-arc-second attitude control accuracy. According to the analytical results, traditional analysis only on payload optical axis cannot reveal the whole impact of micro vibration on LOS error, the two errors of micro-vibration introduced to ACS in this work must be considered for the development of spacecraft with 0.1″ pointing accuracy. • A closed-loop integrated model and attitude control algorithm is established. • ACS offset caused by control torque error and star sensor imaging error induced by micro vibration are presented. • The two errors significantly affect control indicators under steady-state response condition. • Control torque error appears in lower frequency band with small magnitude. • Star sensor imaging error mainly concentrates in high frequency band with considerable magnitude. The present paper proposes a method for evaluating the change in the kinematic free response for a torque pulse input in mechanisms and mechanical systems. Therefore, two generic four-bar mechanisms were analysed, doing the initial flywheel sizing based on the energy variations in one revolution of the system by a developed method of integration and stipulating a coefficient of fluctuation in the recommended intervals. The changes in the angular velocities were obtained by the power spectral density (PSD) with Welch's method, varying the number of points of the fast Fourier transform (NFFT), evaluating the magnitude (PSD) and frequency changes by a created C-coefficient, considering both. For coefficients close to the natural, no relevant frequency change was observed, compared with the magnitude changes, also noting that the C-coefficient changes exponentially when it is distant from the natural value, without flywheel. Significant changes were computed showing the sensitivity of the method, stabilising with the increase of the NFFT. Flywheels play a critical role as core components in satellite attitude control systems. However, their high-speed rotation inevitably generates vibrations that have a detrimental impact on the in-orbit imaging capabilities of high-precision remote sensing payloads. This study focuses on the passive vibration isolation design of satellite flywheels. The flywheel-mounted structural plate and flywheel vibration isolation platform are considered as a whole system (termed a plate-isolator system). In this system, the structural plate is treated as an elastomer. By simplifying the plate-isolator system as a 2-degree-of-freedom vibration system, it becomes evident that obtaining an ideal vibration isolation effect through the optimization of the flywheel vibration isolation platform (FVIP) alone is difficult. In order to enhance the passive vibration isolation effect for satellite flywheels, this study introduces the concept of an elastic boundary applied to the flywheel-mounted structural plate, thus treating the elastic boundary as a design factor. Consequently, the plate-isolator system can be simplified as a 3-stage vibration isolation system. The optimization of the elastic boundary condition of the structural plate is performed using the kinetic model of the simplified 3-stage system. The vibration isolation effect of the plate-isolator system with an elastic boundary is further confirmed through finite element simulation. The calculation results demonstrate that, after establishing a reasonable elastic boundary for the satellite structural plate, the overall vibration/force transmission rate of the plate-isolator system becomes similar to that of a single-degree-of-freedom dynamic system. Finally, the proposed concept is validated through kinetic response analysis of a cube satellite. The results reveal that the vibration amplitude of the satellite's top and side structural plates can be effectively lowered if the elastic boundary condition is set for the flywheel-mounted bottom structural plate. The effect of the co-location of electrochemical and kinetic energy storage on the cradle-to-gate impacts of the storage system was studied using LCA methodology. The storage system was intended for use in the frequency containment reserve (FCR) application, considering a number of daily charge–discharge cycles in the range of 50–1000. The results show that a significant environmental benefit (up to a 96% decrease in cradle-to-gate global warming potential, from 1.65 ± 0.12 to 0.059 ± 0.004 kg CO2-eq./kWh) can be obtained by the co-location of battery and flywheel storage systems, owing to the ability of the flywheel component to preserve battery lifetime by delivering the frequent charge events required in the FCR application. A moderate saving of 24% in global warming potential (from 1.65 ± 0.12 to 1.26 ± 0.11 kg CO2-eq./kWh) could already be achieved by switching from a battery to flywheel storage system with repeated charge–discharge cycling (200 or more charge events per day). This study highlights the need to consider the intensity of charge–discharge cycling when choosing an environmentally preferable storage technology as well as introducing a methodology for incorporating the number of daily cycles in the analysis.

This study aimed to evaluate and compare the effects of inertial flywheel training and accentuated eccentric loading training on the neuromuscular performance of well-trained male college sprinters. Fourteen sprinters were recruited and randomly assigned to either the flywheel training (FWT, n = 7) group or the accentuated eccentric loading training (AELT, n = 7) group. The FWT group completed four sets of 2 + 7 repetitions of flywheel squats, whereas the AELT group performed four sets of seven repetitions of barbell squats (concentric/eccentric: 80%/120% 1RM). Both groups underwent an eight-week squat training program, with two sessions per week. A two-way repeated ANOVA analysis was used to find differences between the two groups and between the two testing times (pre-test vs. post-test). The results indicated significant improvements in all measured variables for the FWT group: 1RM (5.0%, ES = 1.28), CMJ (13.3%, ES = 5.42), SJ (6.0%, ES = 2.94), EUR (6.5%, ES = 4.42), SLJ (2.9%, ES = 1.77), and 30 m sprint (−3.4%, ES = −2.80); and for the AELT group: 1RM (6.3%, ES = 2.53), CMJ (7.4%, ES = 3.44), SJ (6.4%, ES = 2.21), SLJ (2.2%, ES = 1.20), and 30 m sprint (−3.0%, ES = −1.84), with the exception of EUR (0.9%, ES = 0.63, p = 0.134), showing no significant difference. In addition, no significant interaction effects between group and time were observed for 1RM back squat, SJ, SLJ, and 30 m sprint (p > 0.05). Conversely, a significant interaction effect between group and time was observed for both CMJ and EUR (p < 0.001); post hoc analysis revealed that the improvements in CMJ and EUR were significantly greater in the FWT group compared to the AELT group (p < 0.001). These findings indicate that both FWT and AELT are effective at enhancing lower-body strength, power, and speed in well-trained male college sprinters, with FWT being particularly more effective in promoting elastic energy storage and the full utilization of the stretch–shortening cycle.

Monitoring the strain in the rotating flywheel in a kinetic energy storage system is important for safe operation and for the investigation of long-term effects in composite materials like carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics. An optoelectronic strain-measurement system for contactless deformation and position monitoring of a flywheel was investigated. The system consists of multiple optical sensors measuring the local relative in-plane displacement of the flywheel rotor. A special reflective pattern, which is necessary to interact with the sensors, was applied to the surface of the rotor. Combining the measurements from multiple sensors makes it possible to distinguish between the deformation and in-plane displacement of the flywheel. The sensor system was evaluated using a low-speed steel rotor for single-sensor performance investigation as well as a scaled-down high-speed rotor made from PVC plastic. The PVC rotor exhibits more deformation due to centrifugal stresses than a steel or aluminum rotor of the same dimensions, which allows experimental measurements at a smaller flywheel scale as well as a lower rotation speed. Deformation measurements were compared to expected deformation from calculations. The influence of sensor distance was investigated. Deformation and position measurements as well as derived imbalance measurements were demonstrated.

An investigation on a flywheel is presented based on finite element modelling simulations for different geometries. The goal was to optimise the energy density (rotational energy-to-mass ratio) and, at the same time, the rotational energy of a flywheel rotor. The stress behaviour of flywheel rotors under the rotational speed at the maximum stress achievable by the flywheel was analysed. Under this condition, the energy density was obtained for the different geometries, as well as the rotational energy. The best energy density performance due to geometry was achieved with a flywheel rotor presenting a new Gaussian section, which is different from the known Laval disk shape. The best results using a single disk involved a rotational speed of nearly 279,000 rpm and a rotational energy density around 1584 kJ/kg (440 Wh/kg). These values still yielded low total energy; to increase its value, two or three rotors were added to the flywheel, which were analysed in regard to stability. In particular, the triple rotor energy density was ≈ 1550 kJ/kg (431 Wh/kg). As some instability was found in these rotors, a solution using reinforcement was developed to avoid such instabilities. The energy density of such a reinforced double rotor neared 1451 kJ/kg (403 Wh/kg), and the system achieved higher total energy. The material assumed for the devices was carbon fibre Hexcel UHM 12,000, a material kept constant throughout the simulations to allow comparison among the different geometries.

With the continuous improvement of the performance and capabilities of spacecrafts, the application of active magnetic bearings (AMBs) has become a major focus in current research. The AMBs-flywheel system is not only responsible for attitude control but also provides the required energy during shadow periods. In magnetically suspended single gimbal control moment gyroscope (SGCMG), self-excited vibration caused by high-speed rotor rotation significantly affects the stability of the AMB system. The research focus lies in magnetically supporting the flywheel at high speeds with low power consumption to explore gyroscopic mechanics at ultra-high speeds and assess the corresponding stability. This study presents an assessment of the stability performance of a high-speed flywheel equipped on a single gimbal with an angular momentum of 75 Nm. To achieve ultra-high-speed operation under low driving power, a high-precise dynamic balance was performed followed by a novel unbalance control strategy of a radial and axial automatic balancing algorithm to suppress effectively synchronous vibrations due to nutation and precession. Corresponding experiments including static stable suspension experiments as well as low-speed, high-speed, and series-based stability assessments were conducted. Stable suspension at any speed ranging from 0 to 30,000 r/min was successfully implemented. The stability performance of the high-speed flywheel on a rotating platform at different gimbal speeds was verified, with a maximum speed reaching 31,200 r/min. The entire output torque process within the range of 30,000 r/min was revealed.

Considering the results obtained by athletes from our country in recent years, finding new training methods and means is necessary for their improvement. This literature review aims to demonstrate the importance of improving and modernizing the speed training of sprinters and to incorporate the most relevant information from specialist. For this paper, we focused on isoinertial training which is achieved with a device that maintains constant resistance throughout the movement, during the contraction of the muscle, and in the relaxation phase. A search of electronic databases [PubMed, JSSM, Web of Science, Google Scholar] was conducted to identify all publications employing the isoinertial training up to Feb. 2023.

This machine is used to chop leaves, twigs and branches into very small pieces, to avoid the bad smell due to the decay of organic waste and can be used as compost. The amount of cutting speed on the organic waste chopping machine with a chopping time of 2.5 kg of ketapang leaves is the average time obtained without fly wheels 2.0 minutes and with fly wheels 1.7 minutes, a time difference of 0.3 minutes. The chopping time of 2.5 kg of ketapang branches with an average time obtained without a fly wheel of 2.2 minutes and with a fly wheel of 2.0 minutes, a time difference of 0.2 minutes. The chopping time of teak branches is 2.5 kg with an average time obtained without a fly wheel of 2.6 minutes and with a fly wheel of 2.0 minutes, so the time difference is 0.6 minutes. So the cutting speed using a fly wheel is better. The results of the productivity obtained on the organic waste chopping machine, for the results of leaf chopping productivity without a fly wheel of 48% and those using a fly wheel of 58%, and the results of leaf chopping with a fly wheel are 10% more productive, for the productivity of chopping twigs without a fly wheel of 44% and those using a fly wheel of 49%, so the results of chopping twigs with a fly wheel are 5% more productive, and the results of chopping branches without a fly wheel of 37% and those using a fly wheel of 49%, so the results of chopping branches with a fly wheel are 12% more productive.

Energy storage systems are essential in modern energy infrastructure, addressing efficiency, power quality, and reliability challenges in DC/AC power systems. Recognized for their indispensable role in ensuring grid stability and seamless integration with renewable energy sources. These storage systems prove crucial for aircraft, shipboard systems, and electric vehicles, addressing peak load demands economically while enhancing overall system reliability and efficiency. Recent advancements and research have focused on high-power storage technologies, including supercapacitors, superconducting magnetic energy storage, and flywheels, characterized by high-power density and rapid response, ideally suited for applications requiring rapid charging and discharging. Hybrid energy storage systems and multiple energy storage devices represent enhanced flexibility and resilience, making them increasingly attractive for diverse applications, including critical loads. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of recent technological advancements in high-power storage devices, including lithium-ion batteries, recognized for their high energy density. In addition, a summary of hybrid energy storage system applications in microgrids and scenarios involving critical and pulse loads is provided. The research further discusses power, energy, cost, life, and performance technologies.

The flywheel is a widespread mechanical component used for the storage of kinetic energy and angular momentum. It typically consists of cylindrical inertia rotating about its axis on rolling bearings, which involves undesired friction, lubrication, and wear. This paper presents an alternative mechanism that is functionally equivalent to a classical flywheel while relying exclusively on limited-stroke flexure joints. This novel one-degree-of-freedom zero-force mechanism has no wear and requires no lubrication: it is thus compatible with extreme environments, such as vacuum, cryogenics, or ionizing radiation. The mechanism is composed of two coupled pivoting rigid bodies whose individual angular momenta vary during motion but whose sum is constant at all times when the pivoting rate is constant. The quantitative comparison of the flexure-based flywheel to classical ones based on a hollow cylinder as inertia shows that the former typically stores 6 times less angular momentum and kinetic energy for the same mass while typically occupying 10 times more volume. The freedom of design of the shape of the rigid bodies offers the possibility of modifying the ratio of the stored kinetic energy versus angular momentum, which is not possible with classical flywheels. For example, a flexure-based flywheel with rigid pivoting bodies in the shape of thin discs stores 100 times more kinetic energy than a classical flywheel with the same angular momentum. A proof-of-concept prototype was successfully built and characterized in terms of reaction moment generation, which validates the presented analytical model.

This paper presents a comparison of two methods to represent variable blade inertia in two codes for aero-servo-elastic simulations of wind turbines: the nonlinear aeroelastic multi-body model HAWC2 and the nonlinear geometrically exact beam model BeamDyn for OpenFAST. The main goal is to enable these tools to simulate the dynamic behavior of a wind turbine with variable blade inertia. However, current state-of-the-art load simulation tools for wind turbines cannot simulate variable blade inertia, so the source code of these tools must be modified. The validity of the modified codes is proven based on a simple beam model. The validation shows very good agreement between the modified codes of HAWC2, BeamDyn and an analytical calculation. The add-on of variable blade inertias is applied to reduce the mechanical loads of a 5-megawatt reference wind turbine with an integrated hydraulic-pneumatic flywheel in its rotor blades. Flywheels are nowadays a solution for the dynamic charging of electric vehicles since they act as transient energy storage. The need for a top efficient reversible power converter for the flywheel system is crucial to assure high dynamic performance. The paper presents the design of a 50 kW highly efficient reversible three-phase DC–AC inverter involving the most recent silicon carbide metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors, and its experimental validation on a home-made emulator. Highest efficiency in reversible mode, compactness, and thermal enhancement are the targeted objectives that have been achieved. The power converter prototype evaluated on an original pulse width modulation testing-bench is able to emulate the working of the flywheel system. High frequency pulse width modulation switching, speed cycle operating, and thermal losses are evaluated. In addition, an efficiency above 99% for the converter has been attained, enabling robust functioning of the flywheel system emulator to perform specific charging profiles for electric vehicles. Energy storage technology is becoming indispensable in the energy and power sector. The flywheel energy storage system (FESS) offers a fast dynamic response, high power and energy densities, high efficiency, good reliability, long lifetime and low maintenance requirements, and is particularly suitable for applications where high power for short-time bursts is demanded. FESS is gaining increasing attention and is regarded as a potential and promising alternative to other forms of energy storage in various applications. The control is crucial to guarantee the FESS performance, however there is a lack of review of FESS control strategies. This paper presents a comprehensive review of FESS control strategies and different power converters and machine types are considered. In addition, considering the advantageous benefits of model predictive control (MPC) and matrix converter (MC), a case study of MPC strategy for the MC-fed permanent magnet synchronous machine for the FESS charging and discharging control is carried out. Simulation results verify the feasibility and effectiveness of this scheme. Finally, discussions are presented and possible future works are also suggested.

The intermittent hole-digging tree-planting machine shows a periodic short-time peak load law in planting operation, and the operation process is "idling" for small loads most of the time, leading to large torque fluctuations in the transmission system, unscientific power matching, and high energy consumption. To solve the above problems, this article proposes to use a series of energy-saving flywheels in the transmission system of the tree planting machine. On the premise of obtaining holes that meet the target young tree planting requirements, the optimal power compensation strategy for the flywheel system of the tree planting machine is studied to reduce torque fluctuations in the power transmission system, use smaller power drive units, and save energy. Firstly, the nonlinear multi-body dynamics simulation model of soil cutting by the hole-digging component is established. The boundary and contact conditions are set to simulate the power consumption of the hole-digging component at three rotating speeds. Based on the simulation results, the flywheel power compensation strategy is discussed, and the torque fluctuation of the flywheel balance system is analyzed. The results showed that the higher the speed, the greater the power consumption. The power value suddenly increased from 17.82 kW (1.28 s) to 27.93 kW (1.43 s) when the speed was 220 r/min. Then, the power value rapidly decreased, and the power consumption presented a short-term peak feature. The transmission system's maximum input power is determined as 17.82 kW according to the various simulated power consumption characteristics. The part exceeding the power consumption is compensated by the energy storage flywheel. The total compensation energy was 2382.5 J. After the flywheel system was involved, the maximum output power of the tractor power output shaft decreased by 36.2%, and the peak torque decreased from 445.7 N·m to 285.1 N·m. The power consumption obtained from the field test and simulation was similar, but the energy required to overcome peak load was jointly provided by the flywheel and the engine. The actual input power of the power output shaft during the energy release period of the flywheel system was 18.51 kW when the rotating speed of the hole-digging component was 220 r/min, and the relative error with the simulation value was 2.43%. The measured actual speed reduction of the flywheel system was 8.9%. After installing an energy storage flywheel in the transmission system of the tree planting machine, the output power of the power unit can be stabilized. Tree planting machines can be equipped with smaller power units, which can reduce energy consumption and exhaust emissions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this systematic review was to examine the effectiveness of flywheel training, which allows for the replication of specific sports movements, overloading both the concentric and eccentric phases. Inclusion criteria were injury prevention outcomes; ability in terms of strength, power, sprinting, jumping and change of direction; competitive athletes; and RCTs. Exclusion criteria were a lack of a control group and lack of baseline and/or follow-up data. The databases used were Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Sage. The revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool was used to assess the quality of the selected RCTs. The Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine 2011 Levels of Evidence was used. A PICOS (participants, intervention, comparators, study outcomes, and study design) approach was used to evaluate eligibility. A total of 21 RCTs with 8 to 54 participants in each study analyzed flywheel technology and its application in nine sports. The results showed that flywheel training is a good strategy to improve sports performance, providing variation in training methodologies and athletes' adherence. Further studies are needed to define guidelines on training modality, weekly frequency, volume, and inertia load. Only a few studies have applied the flywheel device directly to overload specific multidirectional movements at different joint angles. The global energy crisis and growing environmental concerns provide a strong impetus for the development of fuel-efficient hydraulic excavators (HEs). The boom potential energy of a conventional HE is consumed by throttling in a lowering process, which is a major reason for energy inefficiency. To solve the issue, this paper presents a flywheel-based boom energy regeneration system for HEs using load-sensing systems. The otherwise wasted boom potential energy is regenerated by a pump/motor and stored in a flywheel. The recaptured energy is reused in the form of pressure energy released to the pump outlet. The energy efficiencies of a conventional load-sensing system and the proposed system were analyzed. A control strategy was proposed to optimize the energy-saving procedure. To obtain a more reliable simulation model, a coasting experiment of the flywheel was carried out to obtain the key parameters related to the friction of the flywheel. A 4-t HE in our laboratory was selected as a study case to investigate the energy-saving effect of the flywheel-based boom energy regeneration system. Numeric simulations showed that compared with a conventional load-sensing system, the energy-saving rate was about 32.7% in a typical digging and dumping cycle. These findings indicated that the flywheel-based boom energy regeneration system is promising for developing energy-efficient HEs.

Most haptic actuators available on the market today can generate only a single modality of stimuli. This ultimately limits the capacity of a kinaesthetic haptic controller to deliver more expressive feedback, requiring a haptic controller to integrate multiple actuators to generate complex haptic stimuli, with a corresponding complexity of construction and control. To address this, we designed a haptic controller to deliver several modalities of kinaesthetic haptic feedback using a single actuator: a flywheel, the orientation of which is controlled by two gimbals capable of rotating over 360 degrees, in combination with a flywheel brake. This enables the controller to generate multiple haptic feedback modalities, such as torque feedback, impact simulation, low-frequency high-amplitude vibrations, inertial effects (the sensation of momentum), and complex haptic output effects such as the experience of vortex-like forces (whirl effects). By combining these diverse haptic effects, the controller enriches the haptic dimension of VR environments. This paper presents the device’s design, implementation, and characterization, and proposes potential applications for future work.

The primary aim of this study was to investigate the intra- and inter-day reliability of flywheel cluster set training in concentric power (CON), eccentric power (ECC), and ECC overload during the Romanian deadlift exercise (RDL). A secondary aim was to assess the acute effect of internal and external attentional focus instructions on mean power when performing the flywheel RDL. Fourteen collegiate male field sport athletes (age, 23.3 ± 3.7 years; mass, 80.8 ± 9.9 kg; height, 1.79 ± 0.06 m) were randomized into internal (n = 7) or external (n = 7) attentional focus groups and attended four testing sessions, with a between-session separation of 7 days. Sessions consisted of four cluster sets of fifteen repetitions “excluding momentum repetitions” (4 × (5 + 5 + 5)) using a specific inertial load (0.025, 0.050, 0.075, and 0.100 kg·m−2) for a given set in a randomized ascending or descending order. Cluster sets were separated by a 45 s intra-set rest period. Both instructional focus groups attained familiarization, although the time taken to achieve familiarization (outcome stability) differed between groups. The external instructional group attained familiarization post-session 2 (Cohen’s d (ES), ES = 0.11–0.65) with little volatility between performance measures (CV% = 4.61–9.59). Additionally, the internal group reported inconsistencies among all inertial loads, reporting large differences in MP in the 0.100 kg·m−2 inertial load from day 2 to day 3 (ES = 1.22) and both 0.050 kg·m2 (p = 0.010) and 0.075 kg·m−2 (p = 0.016) between day 3 and day 4. The flywheel RDL cluster set approach is a reliable training modality for maintaining mean power output during cluster set repetitions.

This report describes the design development process and recommendations of a Community-Scale Zero Net Energy Master Plan for a residential block in Oakland, the Oakland EcoBlock. The recommended master plan includes an integrated system of energy efficiency retrofits, a direct current solar/storage/electric vehicle microgrid, alternating/direct current houses, and water efficiency retrofits with rainwater capture. The recommended master plan is projected to be close to zero-net energy (95 percent) for homes, reduce carbon emissions by 65 percent at the block scale (including transportation), and reduce water use 60–70 percent. The integrated system of energy efficiency and a direct current solar/storage/electric vehicle (EV) charging microgrid is the first of its kind at the residential block scale. This breakthrough because the deep energy efficiency retrofit savings free up enough capacity in the solar supply and storage to enable residents to switch from natural gas to electricity for heating and domestic hot water and to provide EV charging for 33 percent of vehicle miles traveled. The savings in household transportation costs are a game changer because when combined with savings in the electric and water utility bills, the total cash flow savings are projected to fund the capital improvements of the proposed systems. This project’s benefits include lower and more predictable utility bills; greater resiliency because the system can operate during outages, and vastly improved indoor air quality by reducing natural gas consumption. The local energy storage reduces peak demand for the utility. California benefits from a model that exceeds the targets for reductions in energy consumption and carbon emissions and the reductions in water use address California’s severe water challenges. The Oakland EcoBlock is a transformative model for accelerating the rapid deployment of advanced energy communities.

Flywheel resistance training devices (FRTD) is shown effective in improving strength, sprinting, jumping and changes of direction (COD) performance in male soccer players, however, this is not elucidated in female soccer players. We aimed to assess the effect of FRTD on these physical abilities in females soccer players. 24 professional female soccer players (age: 20.4±2.6 years) were randomly assigned to a flywheel training group (FWTG) that trained twice a week for 6 weeks on a rotary inertia device with an initial volume of 3 sets of 6 repetitions and an inertia of 0,025 kg·m-2, increasing intensity and volume or a control group (CG) that did not performed any additional resistance training program. Concentric peak torque of the knee extensors (CONEXT) and flexors (CONFLEX), eccentric peak torque of the knee extensors (ECCEXT) and flexors (ECCFLEX) at 60°·s -1 on an isokinetic dynamometer, countermovement jump (CMJ) height, COD and 30-metres sprint were assessed. Significant time by group interactions were found in CONEXT (p = 0.002; η²p = 0.425), CONFLEX (p = 0.037; η²p = 0.22), ECCEXT (p = 0.002; η²p = 0.43) and ECCFLEX (p = 0.008; η²p = 0.334). No time by group effect wasfound in CMJ (p = 0.061; η²p = 0.182), COD (p = 0.067; η²p = 0.184) orsprint (p = 0.926; η²p = 4.979·e-4). In conclusion, 6 weeks of flywheel squat training improved strength (especially eccentric strength) but not soccer-specific abilities such as jumping, changing of direction or sprinting in professional soccer players.

The low-RPM Torque Converter (LRTC) is a rotating generator concept for use on the seabed with the driving force from sea waves motion on the sea surface. This concept is built up of two identical generators connected opposite each other via a spring drum with a built-in ball bearing clutch. The drum is connected to a buoy on the sea surface via a wire, the wire is rolled around the spring drum. With sea waves, the buoy moves either upwards or downwards and pulls the wire upwards or downwards. This movement causes the generators to spin. This article presents an upgrade of the LRTC generator concept and upgraded measurement system, both hardware and software. A flywheel system of the thin-disc type has been designed for direct connection to the generator's rotor shaft and an electronic measuring system has also been developed for more accurate measurements and minor disturbances. More detailed tests have been performed both for the purpose of comparing the systems and to explore the performance of the generator concept in more detail. Three different experiments have been done in this article. The first two experiments were performed to investigate the performance of the flywheel and to see the performance of the LRTC system with and without flywheel. The third experiment investigated the optimization of the flywheel mass by increasing the mass of the flywheel with the addition of more thin discs. All movements are simulated with a six-joint industrial robot. Several sinusoidal types of wave motions have been simulated with different time periods and also several real wave climate motions (data taken from fields) have been simulated with the robot. The experiments show that the addition of the flywheel in the LRTC system provides advantages in increasing both peak power, average output power and also softens the output power oscillation.

The global climate protection policy aimed at achieving a zero greenhouse gas emissions target has led to the fast incorporation of large-scale photovoltaics into the power network. The conventional AC grid was not modeled to be incorporated with large-scale non-synchronous inverter-based energy resources (IBR). Incorporating inertia-free IBR into the grid leads to technical issues such as the degradation of system strength and inertia, therefore affecting the safety and reliability of the electrical power system. This research introduced a new solution to incorporate a flywheel in the rotor of a synchronous machine to improve the dynamic inertia control during a system disruption and to maintain the constancy of the system. The objective of this work is to enhance large-scale photovoltaic systems in such a way that they can avoid failures during a fault. A model of transient constancy with two synchronous generators and a LSPV is established in PowerWorld modeling software. A line-to-ground and three-phase fault are simulated in a system with up to 50% IBR penetration. The outcomes showed that the power network was able to ride through faults (RTFs) and that the stability of frequency and voltage are enhanced because of a flywheel that improved grid inertia and strength. Background: Many traditional experimental testing devices like hydraulic testing machines, Split Hopkinson bar technique, etc. are available to recreate the same material behaviour that occue during manufacturing processes at different strain rates. But the fact is that a state of large equivalent strain with dominant shear strain at intermediate strain rate is not easily achievable using these devices. Objective: The goal of this work is to design and develop a new dynamic torsion device based on the principle of the flywheel at intermediate strain rates in order to study the shear behaviour of the material that typically occurred during the manufacturing process. Methods: A general description of the testing device is given systematically in this paper. Hopkinson bar sensor as a load measuring technique is used to measure the applied torque on the specimen and the shear deformation of the specimen is measured by the grid pattern technique. Results: After the design and manufacturing of torsion device, some experimental tests on AA7075-T6 alloy are presented for validation of the device. The preliminary experimental results are attractive. It shows that the material can be tested at an intermediate strain rate by varying the speed of the flywheel. Conclusions: The use of this newly designed torsion device with an appropriate methodology of load and deformation measurement, finally allows us to obtain the mechanical pure shear behavior of materials under intermediate strain rate loading. With the development of the global economy and the increase in environmental awareness, energy technology in transportation, especially the application of energy storage technology in rail transportation, has become a key area of research. Rail transportation systems are characterized by high energy consumption and poor power quality due to the more flexible regulation capability of energy storage technology in these aspects. This paper summarizes the latest research results on energy storage in rail transportation systems, matches the characteristics of energy storage technologies with the energy storage needs of rail transportation, and analyzes the operation of energy storage systems in different scenarios. The adaptability of batteries, supercapacitors, and flywheels as energy storage systems for rail transportation is summarized and compared. The topologies and integration methods of various energy storage systems are studied. The control strategies under each control of rail transportation are summarized and proposed. The future development direction of energy storage system for rail transportation prospects and the corresponding reference is provided for the engineering of energy storage technology in the field of rail transportation. Flywheels play a critical role as core components in satellite attitude control systems. However, their high-speed rotation inevitably generates vibrations that have a detrimental impact on the in-orbit imaging capabilities of high-precision remote sensing payloads. This study focuses on the passive vibration isolation design of satellite flywheels. The flywheel-mounted structural plate and flywheel vibration isolation platform are considered as a whole system (termed a plate-isolator system). In this system, the structural plate is treated as an elastomer. By simplifying the plate-isolator system as a 2-degree-of-freedom vibration system, it becomes evident that obtaining an ideal vibration isolation effect through the optimization of the flywheel vibration isolation platform (FVIP) alone is difficult. In order to enhance the passive vibration isolation effect for satellite flywheels, this study introduces the concept of an elastic boundary applied to the flywheel-mounted structural plate, thus treating the elastic boundary as a design factor. Consequently, the plate-isolator system can be simplified as a 3-stage vibration isolation system. The optimization of the elastic boundary condition of the structural plate is performed using the kinetic model of the simplified 3-stage system. The vibration isolation effect of the plate-isolator system with an elastic boundary is further confirmed through finite element simulation. The calculation results demonstrate that, after establishing a reasonable elastic boundary for the satellite structural plate, the overall vibration/force transmission rate of the plate-isolator system becomes similar to that of a single-degree-of-freedom dynamic system. Finally, the proposed concept is validated through kinetic response analysis of a cube satellite. The results reveal that the vibration amplitude of the satellite’s top and side structural plates can be effectively lowered if the elastic boundary condition is set for the flywheel-mounted bottom structural plate.

Abstract Background Over the last years there have been a wide body of research exploring the best strategies to promote acute enhancements in players’ performance. Despite that, most studies have been focused on adult and elite players, and different results may be identified when considering players from lower levels of performance and belonging to youth categories. In addition, most studies conducted in this domain focused in repetitive movement patterns, and while adding variability has been considered as a useful approach to enhance players’ performance at short and long-term perspectives, less is known regarding it applicability to acute enhance players physical performance. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the acute enhancement effects of performing the half-squat in a flywheel ergometer between a more-repetitive approach (low noise) and a more variable approach (differential learning, high noise) in youth soccer players. Methods A total of sixteen players (age = 16.2 ± 0.6 years) was exposed to four conditions in a randomized order: (1) repetitive intervention for 30 s; (2) repetitive intervention for 10-min; (3) differential learning intervention for 30 s; (4) differential learning intervention for 10-min. Each condition consisted in 3 sets of 6 repetitions of eccentric half squats performed in a flywheel ergometer. Countermovement jump, 10 m and 30 m linear sprint, and change-of-direction ability were measured every session at baseline (pre-test) and after each protocol (post-test). Results No potentiation effect was observed overall with any of the interventions. In addition, no differences between protocols were found for sprinting. However, the repetitive intervention impaired jumping performance for both 30 s (small effects, p ≤ .05) and 10-min intervals (small effects, p ≤ .05), as well as in the change-of-direction task for 30 s (p ≤ .05). Conclusions These results may be due to the players’ low experience in eccentric flywheel training. Despite these findings, individual potentiation responses emerged from both protocols when considering the individual responses, reinforcing the need to establish more personalized approaches.
