Background: Present the relevance of the study and highlights the key points of literature overview. Purpose: As of May 25, 2018, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has become mandatory for all organizations, public or private, that handle personal data of European citizens, regardless of their physical location. Higher education institutions (HEIs), namely public universities, are no exception to this requirement and, as in many other organizations, many HEIs begin the process of implementing the GDPR without meeting the minimum conditions necessary for implementation. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to present a model to determine the level of readiness of HEIs regarding the implementation of the GDPR. Study design/methodology/approach: With the objective of designing a new artefact as a readiness model for the implementation of the GDPR, this study follows Design Science Research as an approach to be used to build the readiness model, based on a set of 16 critical success factors (CSFs) previously determined. Findings/conclusions: A readiness model was designed, based on a set of 16 CSFs related to the implementation of GDPR in HEIs. Limitations/future research: This is a new area of study that needs further development, namely through the practical application of the model, allowing the improvement of the measurement levels of the different CSFs. Practical implications: The determined readiness model allows HEIs to realize a priori if they have the necessary conditions for the implementation of the GDPR, giving useful indications of the organizational dimensions and the CSFs that compose them where better performance is necessary to ensure a successful implementation. Originality/Value: As far as we know, this is the first model of readiness based on CSFs related to the implementation of GDPR in HEIs, being therefore a first contribution to the development of this area.

While the physical dimensions of climate change are now routinely assessed through multimodel intercomparisons, projected impacts on the global ocean ecosystem generally rely on individual models with a specific set of assumptions. To address these single-model limitations, we present standardized ensemble projections from six global marine ecosystem models forced with two Earth system models and four emission scenarios with and without fishing. We derive average biomass trends and associated uncertainties across the marine food web. Without fishing, mean global animal biomass decreased by 5% (±4% SD) under low emissions and 17% (±11% SD) under high emissions by 2100, with an average 5% decline for every 1 °C of warming. Projected biomass declines were primarily driven by increasing temperature and decreasing primary production, and were more pronounced at higher trophic levels, a process known as trophic amplification. Fishing did not substantially alter the effects of climate change. Considerable regional variation featured strong biomass increases at high latitudes and decreases at middle to low latitudes, with good model agreement on the direction of change but variable magnitude. Uncertainties due to variations in marine ecosystem and Earth system models were similar. Ensemble projections performed well compared with empirical data, emphasizing the benefits of multimodel inference to project future outcomes. Our results indicate that global ocean animal biomass consistently declines with climate change, and that these impacts are amplified at higher trophic levels. Next steps for model development include dynamic scenarios of fishing, cumulative human impacts, and the effects of management measures on future ocean biomass trends.

The Na, K–ATPase generates an asymmetric ion gradient that supports multiple cellular functions, including the control of cellular volume, neuronal excitability, secondary ionic transport, and the movement of molecules like amino acids and glucose. The intracellular and extracellular levels of Na+ and K+ ions are the classical local regulators of the enzyme's activity. Additionally, the regulation of Na, K–ATPase is a complex process that occurs at multiple levels, encompassing its total cellular content, subcellular distribution, and intrinsic activity. In this context, the enzyme serves as a regulatory target for hormones, either through direct actions or via signaling cascades triggered by hormone receptors. Notably, FXYDs small transmembrane proteins regulators of Na, K–ATPase serve as intermediaries linking hormonal signaling to enzymatic regulation at various levels. Specifically, members of the FXYD family, particularly FXYD1 and FXYD2, are that undergo phosphorylation by kinases activated through hormone receptor signaling, which subsequently influences their modulation of Na, K–ATPase activity. This review describes the effects of FXYD2, cardiotonic steroid signaling, and hormones such as angiotensin II, dopamine, insulin, and catecholamines on the regulation of Na, K–ATPase. Furthermore, this review highlights the implications of Na, K–ATPase in diseases such as hypertension, renal hypomagnesemia, and cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) encompass a range of processes from preliminary to advanced stages. Conventional treatments are increasingly inadequate for handling emergent pollutants, particularly organic compounds with carcinogenic potential that pose risks to aquifers. Recent advancements prioritize integrating Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) and adsorbents with conventional methods to effectively retain organic pollutants and enhance mineralization. There is a growing preference for non-chemical or minimally chemical approaches. Innovations such as combining ozone and other biological processes with photo-sono-assisted methods, alongside integrating AOPs with adsorbents, are promising. These approaches leverage catalyst-assisted reactions to optimize oxidation efficiency. This review aims to provide a holistic perspective on WWTP processes, spanning wastewater intake to the production of potable water, highlighting key technologies, operational challenges, and future trends. The focus is on advancing sustainable practices and enhancing treatment efficacy to safeguard water quality and address evolving environmental concerns effectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Phytomonas is the only kinetoplastid that can parasitize plants, causing economically relevant issues. Phytomonas serpens share similarities with pathogenic trypanosomatids, including surface enzymes that are involved in adhesion to the salivary gland of their experimental host, the insect Oncopeltus fasciatus. Ectophosphatases are cell surface enzymes involved in host–parasite interactions that are widely distributed among microorganisms. This work aimed to perform the biochemical characterization of P. serpens ectophosphatase activity, investigating and discussing its possible physiological role. This activity presented an acidic profile, and its kinetic parameters Km and Vmax were calculated as 1.57 ± 0.08 mM p-NPP and 10.11 ± 0.14 nmol p-NP/(h × 108 flagellates), respectively. It was stimulated by cobalt, inhibited by zinc, and insensitive to EDTA, a divalent metal chelator. The inhibitor sodium orthovanadate was able to decrease P. serpens ectophosphatase activity and growth, suggesting its involvement in cell proliferation. Given that P. serpens can uptake inorganic phosphate (Pi) from the extracellular medium, it is likely that its ectophosphatase activity acts together with the transport systems in the Pi acquisition process. The elucidation of the molecular mechanisms involved in this process emerges as a relevant perspective, providing new strategies for controlling Phytomonas infection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Neutrophils rapidly infiltrate sites of infection and possess several microbicidal strategies, such as neutrophil extracellular traps release and phagocytosis. Enhanced neutrophil infiltration is associated with higher susceptibility to Leishmania infection, but neutrophil effector response contribution to this phenotype is uncertain. Here, we show that neutrophils from susceptible BALB/c mice (B/c) produce more NETs in response to Leishmania major than those from resistant C57BL/6 mice (B6), which are more phagocytic. The absence of neutrophil elastase contributes to phagocytosis regulation. Microarray analysis shows enrichment of genes involved in NET formation (mpo, pi3kcg, il1b) in B/c, while B6 shows upregulation of genes involved in phagocytosis and cell death (Arhgap12, casp9, mlkl, FasL). scRNA-seq in L. major-infected B6 showed heterogeneity in the pool of intralesional neutrophils, and we identified the N1 subset as the putative subpopulation involved with phagocytosis. In vivo, imaging validates NET formation in infected B/c ears where NETing neutrophils were mainly uninfected cells. NET digestion in vivo augmented parasite lymphatic drainage. Hence, a balance between NET formation and phagocytosis in neutrophils may contribute to the divergent phenotype observed in these mice. Author summary: Leishmaniasis is a complex of vector-borne diseases transmitted by infected sandflies carrying Leishmania. Clinical manifestations range from cutaneous lesions to visceral disease, which can be fatal if not treated. Cutaneous Leishmaniasis is the most common clinical manifestation. Experimental models built in the early 70s have established susceptible (BALB/c) and resistant (C57BL/6) strains to Leishmania major infection. Neutrophils comprise the first line of defense against microbial invaders. Neutrophils possess powerful microbicidal tools, which can thwart most pathogens. Accordingly, genetic disorders that lead to neutropenia enhance patients' susceptibility to infections. Counterintuitively, neutrophilia is associated with enhanced susceptibility to cutaneous Leishmaniasis. Although these cells used to be considered transcriptionally rudimental, currently neutrophils have emerged as functionally plastic cells. Here, we deepened the understanding of why neutrophils are associated with susceptibility to infection in the murine model by showing that not just the influx, but the functional profile of these cells likely impacts the early response to infection and affects parasite retention in the primary site of infection, which likely contributes to shaping disease outcome.
