Abstract

The engineering challenges faced by traditional manufacturing has facilitated the development of nontraditional manufacturing (NTM) processes. The multidisciplinary nature and the diversity of NTM education have posed more challenges than education in traditional manufacturing processes. To overcome these challenges, the different NTM processes are systematically presented from introductory to advanced levels by web implementation with interactive capabilities. Apart from text, images and sound, the interactive methods employed in this project include: interactive exploration of physical processes with JAVA applet; Macromedia Shockwave based animation; 3D virtual reality (VR) animation of NTM process simulations; and 2D movies of process simulation by finite element modeling (FEM). 5. Estimation of the stereoselectivity of reduction of 3,3,5,5-tetramethylcyclohexanone by sodium borohydride

Abstract

4-(1-Hydroxyethyl)-3,3,5,5-tetramethylcyclohexanone has been prepared to serve as a model for 3,3,5,5-tetramethylcyclohexanone on which the reduction stereochemical product ratio may be experimentally determined. Reduction with sodium borohydride in 2-propanol gives two epimers in a 95.5:4.5 ratio. The major isomer is shown to be the less stable by equilibration over Raney nickel. Proton and 13C nmr spectra confirm that this major epimer is cis-4-(1-hydroxyethyl)-3,3,5,5-tetramethylcyclohexanol and show that this compound exists predominantly in the conformation with an axial hydroxyethyl group and an equatorial hydroxyl group. It is concluded that reduction of this model compound proceeds at least 95.5% by equatorial attack.

7. A tablet computer application for patients to participate in their hospital care.

Abstract

Building on our institution's commercial electronic health record and custom personal health record Web portal, we developed a tablet computer application to provide interactive information to hospital patients. Using Apple iPad devices, the prototype application was provided to five patients in a cardiology step-down unit. We conducted detailed interviews to assess patients' knowledge of their inpatient care, as well as their perceptions of the usefulness of the application. While patients exhibited varying levels of comfort with using the tablet computer, they were highly enthusiastic about the application's ability to supply health information such as their inpatient medication histories and photographs of their care providers. Additional research is warranted to assess the benefit such applications may have for addressing inpatient information needs, enhancing patient-provider communication and improving patient satisfaction.
