Cutaneous T cell lymphomas (CTCLs), with mycosis fungoides (MF) and Sézary syndrome (SS) as the classic types, are the commonest group of primary cutaneous lymphomas. The diverse clinical manifestation and non-specific histologic findings of early lesions in CTCLs render diagnosis challenging. Treatment modalities also vary and include topical and oral medications, chemotherapy, phototherapy, and radiation therapies. Local dermatological, hemato-oncologic and radiotherapeutical experts in Taiwan convened meetings in 2023 to review and discuss the latest evidence and updates regarding diagnosis and management of CTCLs. The 2023 consensus from the Taiwanese Dermatological Association (TDA) and Taiwan Lung Cancer Society (TLCS) addresses the management of tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI)-induced skin toxicities in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Providing a comprehensive overview, the consensus reflects recent advances in understanding causes and developmental processes of TKI-related skin toxicities. Aimed at guiding clinicians in Taiwan, the consensus integrates new treatment perspectives while incorporating experiences from local dermatology experts. Recommendations underwent a voting process, achieving consensus when 75% or more of experts agreed, leading to their inclusion. Introduction: Pain conditions are common in elderly individuals, including those with dementia. However, symptoms associated with dementia may lead to poor recognition, assessment and management of pain. In this study, we incorporated the variables based on questionnaires into a machine learning algorithm to build a prediction model for the pain index of elderly individuals with dementia., Materials and Methods: In this study, 113 cases were collected through questionnaires and used to build prediction models for the patient's pain index. Three machine learning algorithms were incorporated for comparison in this study. To interpret the prediction model, SHapley additive explanations values were used to depict the ranking importance of variables and the relationship between features and pain index., Results: In the comparison of models, random forests with feature selection outperformed in terms of root mean square error and mean absolute error. A total of 11 features were selected based on embedded method. The results showed that the Karnofsky scale played a key role in predicting pain index for elderly individuals with dementia and was positively associated with pain index. Arthritis is the most important disease to predicting the pain index., Conclusions: Our findings provided the key insights to predict the pain index of elderly patients with dementia. Objective: To investigate (1) lateral atlantoaxial articulation (LAA) morphology in patients with basilar invagination (BI) with atlantoaxial dislocation (AAD) and healthy individuals and its relationship with the severity of dislocation and (2) the effect of the LAA morphology on reduction degree (RD) after surgery., Methods: In this retrospective propensity score matching case-control study, imaging and baseline data of 62 patients with BI and AAD from 2011 to 2022 were collected. Six hundred thirteen  participants without occipitocervical junctional deformity served as controls. Logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve were used for analysis., Results: The age, BMI and sex did not differ significantly between the two groups after propensity score matching. Sagittal slope angle (SSA) and coronal slope angle (CSA) was lower and greater, respectively, in the patient group than in the control group. A negative SSA value usually indicates anteverted LAA. Regression analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between SSA and severity of dislocation. However, no relationship was found between CSA and the severity of dislocation. The multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that minimum-SSA emerged as an independent predictor of satisfactory reduction (RD ≥ 90%). The ROC curve demonstrated an area under the curve of 0.844, with a cut-off value set at -40.2., Conclusion: SSA in patients group was significantly smaller and more asymmetric than that in the control group. Prolonged retention of urinary catheters (UC) after vaginal surgery is a common practice aimed at preventing postoperative urinary retention and enhancing the success rate of surgery. However, this approach also increases the chance of urinary tract infection (UTI), prolongs hospital stay (LOS), and delays recovery. Balancing these considerations, we investigated the effect of the timing of UC removal. We conducted a comprehensive literature search using four databases to identify all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving patients who underwent transvaginal surgery and had UC removal within 7 days postsurgery. This systematic review was conducted by two reviewers independently following the PRISMA guideline. This study investigated the timing of catheter removal in relation to the incidence of urinary retention, UTI, and LOS. A total of 8 RCT studies, involving 952 patients were included in the meta-analysis. Six studies revealed no significant difference in the urinary retention rate between early catheter removal group (24 h) and delayed removal group (>48 h, P = 0.21), but exhibited a significantly reduced UTI rate (P < 0.001) in 4 studies. In 2 studies, no significant difference in urinary retention rate between the earlier removal (3 h) and removal at 24 h (P = 0.09), and also UTI rate (P = 0.57). Overall, 5 studies revealed that early catheter removal significantly shortened the LOS by an average of 1-3 days (P ≤ 0.001). Early removal of UC can considerably reduce the rate of UTI and shorten the LOS. Background: Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) followed by MRI-targeted prostate biopsy is the current standard for diagnosing prostate cancer (PCa). However, studies evaluating the value of biomarkers, including prostate health index (PHI) and its derivatives using this method are limited. We aimed to investigate the efficacy of PHI density (PHID) in guiding MRI-targeted prostate biopsies to identify clinically significant PCas (csPCa)., Methods: The multicenter prospectively registered prostate biopsy database from three medical centers in Taiwan included patients with PHI and MRI-targeted and/or systematic prostate biopsies. We assessed the required values of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), prostate volume, PHI, PHID, and Prostate Imaging Reporting & Data System (PI-RADS) score using multivariable analyses, receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, and decision curve analyses (DCA). csPCa was defined as the International Society of Urological Pathology Gleason group ≥2 PCa, with an emphasis on reducing unwarranted biopsies., Results: The study cohort comprised 420 individuals. Diagnoses of PCa and csPCa were confirmed in 62.4% and 47.9% of the participants, respectively. The csPCa diagnosis rates were increased with increasing PI-RADS scores (20.5%, 44.2%, and 73.1% for scores 3, 4, and 5, respectively). Independent predictors for csPCa detection included PHI, prostate volume, and PI-RADS scores of 4 and 5 in multivariable analyses. The area under the curve (AUC) for csPCa of PHID (0.815) or PHI (0.788) was superior to that of PSA density (0.746) and PSA (0.635) in the entire cohort, and the superiority of PHID (0.758) was observed in PI-RADS 3 lesions. DCA revealed that PHID achieved the best net clinical benefit in PI-RADS 3-5 and 4/5 cases. In tuberculosis (TB), chest radiography (CXR) patterns are highly variable, mimicking pneumonia and many other diseases. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of Google teachable machine, a deep neural network-based image classification tool, to develop algorithm for predicting TB probability of CXRs. The training dataset included 348 TB CXRs and 3806 normal CXRs for training TB detection. We also collected 1150 abnormal CXRs and 627 normal CXRs for training abnormality detection. For external validation, we collected 250 CXRs from our hospital. We also compared the accuracy of the algorithm to five pulmonologists and radiological reports. In external validation, the AI algorithm showed areas under the curve (AUC) of 0.951 and 0.975 in validation dataset 1 and 2. The accuracy of the pulmonologists on validation dataset 2 showed AUC range of 0.936-0.995. When abnormal CXRs other than TB were added, AUC decreased in both human readers (0.843-0.888) and AI algorithm (0.828). When combine human readers with AI algorithm, the AUC further increased to 0.862-0.885. The TB CXR AI algorithm developed by using Google teachable machine in this study is effective, with the accuracy close to experienced clinical physicians, and may be helpful for detecting tuberculosis by CXR., (© 2024. Camellia crapnelliana Tutch., belonging to the Theaceae family, is an excellent landscape tree species with high ornamental values. It is particularly an important woody oil-bearing plant species with high ecological, economic, and medicinal values. Here, we first report the chromosome-scale reference genome of C. crapnelliana with integrated technologies of SMRT, Hi-C and Illumina sequencing platforms. The genome assembly had a total length of ~2.94 Gb with contig N50 of ~67.5 Mb, and ~96.34% of contigs were assigned to 15 chromosomes. In total, we predicted 37,390 protein-coding genes, ~99.00% of which could be functionally annotated. The chromosome-scale genome of C. crapnelliana will become valuable resources for understanding the genetic basis of the fatty acid biosynthesis, and greatly facilitate the exploration and conservation of C. crapnelliana., (© 2024. The aim of this study is to investigate the adverse effects of benzophenones (BPs) on the intestinal tract of mice and the potential mechanism. F1-generation ICR mice were exposed to BPs (benzophenone-1, benzophenone-2, and benzophenone-3) by breastfeeding from birth until weaning, and by drinking water after weaning until maturity. The offspring mice were executed on postnatal day 56, then their distal colons were sampled. AB-PAS staining, HE staining, immunofluorescence, Transmission Electron Microscope, immunohistochemistry, Western Blot and RT-qPCR were used to study the effects of BPs exposure on the colonic tissues of offspring mice. The results showed that colonic microvilli appeared significantly deficient in the high-dose group, and the expression of tight junction markers Zo-1 and Occludin was significantly down-regulated and the number of goblet cells and secretions were reduced in all dose groups, and the expression of secretory cell markers MUC2 and KI67 were decreased, as well as the expression of intestinal stem cell markers Lgr5 and Bmi1, suggesting that BPs exposure caused disruption of intestinal barrier and imbalance in the composition of the intestinal stem cell pool. Besides, the expression of cellular inflammatory factors such as macrophage marker F4/80 and tumor necrosis factor TNF-α was elevated in the colonic tissues of all dose groups, and the inflammatory infiltration was observed, which means the exposure of BPs caused inflammatory effects in the intestinal tract of F1-generation mice. In addition, the contents of Notch/Wnt signaling pathway-related genes, such as Dll-4, Notch1, Hes1, Ctnnb1and Sfrp2 were significantly decreased in each high-dose group (P < 0.05), suggesting that BPs may inhibit the regulation of Notch/Wnt signaling pathway. Background: We seek to compare the early and late outcomes of reperfusion-first versus central repair-first strategies in patients with acute type A dissection (ATAAD) complicated by mesenteric malperfusion., Methods: Among 68 patients, reperfusion-first strategy with superior mesenteric artery (SMA) stenting was adopted in 31 and central repair-first in 37, based on rupture risk and circulatory compromise, severity, time and mechanisms of mesenteric ischemia. Early and late outcomes were compared between two strategies. Follow-up was 100% at 3.3±1.4 years., Results: Mean age was 50.6±11.4 years (59 males, 86.8%). The reperfusion-first group had more celiac artery involvement (74.2% vs. 48.6%) and peritoneal irritation signs (19.4% vs. 2.7%), while central repair-first group had more tamponade (27% vs. 3.2%). Early mortality was 48.6% (18/37) with central repair-first strategy versus 19.4% (6/31) in reperfusion-first group (P=0.012). Reperfusion-first patients had fewer gastrointestinal complications (12.9% vs. 54.1%, P<0.001) and respiratory failure (3.2% vs. 24.3%, P=0.017). At 5 years, SMA stent patency was 84%, and survival was significantly higher in reperfusion-first patients (80.6% vs. 45.9%, P=0.009), with similar freedom from adverse events between two groups (74.9% vs. 76.0%, P=0.812). Tamponade (hazard ratio [HR], 3.093; P=0.023), peritoneal irritation signs (HR, 8.559; P=0.006), and lactate (mmol/L) (HR, 1.279; P<0.001) were predictors for all-cause mortality., Conclusions: In this series of ATAAD patients with mesenteric malperfusion, the reperfusion-first strategy with SMA stenting could significantly reduce the mortality risk and achieved favorable late survival and freedom from adverse events. Background/aim: The multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI)-ultrasound (US) fusion targeted biopsy (TB) is a useful diagnostic device for men with suspected prostate cancer (PC) and can increase the detection rate for clinically significant PCs (csPC). However, few studies have shown pathological findings of undetectable csPCs on the prostate mpMRI., Patients and Methods: This study investigated the growth patterns of csPC undetected in prostate mpMRI. The study enrolled 248 patients with suspected PCs and ≥PI-RADS 2 lesions, who then underwent mpMRI-US fusion TB and nearly prostate-mapping systematic biopsies (SB). A total 248 biopsies included 404 regions of interest in TB and 2976 mapping-regions in SB., Results: The detection rates of csPC, defined as PC grade group (GG) ≥2, were 42% in TB and 44% in SB, and the highest detection rate was 50%, using both TB and SB. Approximately 79% of PI-RADS 3/4/5 with any PC showed csPC. A total 201 PI-RADS 3/4/5 lesions showed benign prostatic hyperplasia, lymphocytic prostatitis, or fibromuscular stroma only in the core tissues. Notably, 22 csPCs detected in SB but undetected in prostate mpMRI preferentially showed a pattern of mixed well-formed and fused PC glands. The other patterns including cribriform glands and poorly formed glands with intracytoplasmic vacuoles were also seen. It has been extensively studied that the gut microbiome provides animals flexibility to adapt to food variability. Yet, how gut phageome responds to diet variation of wild animals remains unexplored. Here, we analyze the eco-evolutionary dynamics of gut phageome in six wild gibbons (Hoolock tianxing) by collecting individually-resolved fresh fecal samples and parallel feeding behavior data for 15 consecutive months. Application of complementary viral and microbial metagenomics recovers 39,198 virulent and temperate phage genomes from the feces. Hierarchical cluster analyses show remarkable seasonal diet variations in gibbons. From high-fruit to high-leaf feeding period, the abundances of phage populations are seasonally fluctuated, especially driven by the increased abundance of virulent phages that kill the Lachnospiraceae hosts, and a decreased abundance of temperate phages that piggyback the Bacteroidaceae hosts. Functional profiling reveals an enrichment through horizontal gene transfers of toxin-antitoxin genes on temperate phage genomes in high-leaf season, potentially conferring benefits to their prokaryotic hosts. The phage-host ecological dynamics are driven by the coevolutionary processes which select for tail fiber and DNA primase genes on virulent and temperate phage genomes, respectively. Purpose: With advances in medical technology, the average lifespan has increased, leading to a growing significance of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH), particularly in the elderly population. Most patients with iNPH have been treated either with ventriculo-peritoneal shunts (VPS) or conservative measures. However, lumbo-peritoneal shunts (LPS) have emerged as an alternative treatment option for iNPH in recent decades, extensive research still lacks comparing outcomes with LPS to those with VPS or non-surgical treatment. The aim of the resent study is to disclose the long-term therapeutic outcomes of LPS, VPS, and non-shunting in patients with iNPH. Methods: We used the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan to assess the long-term outcomes of these treatment options. We enrolled 5,537 iNPH patients who received shunting surgery, of which 5,254 were VPS and 283 were LPS. To compare the difference between each group, matching was conducted by propensity score matching using a 1:1 ratio based on LPS patients. Primary outcomes included death and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) Results: Our findings show that VPS resulted in significantly more MACEs than non-surgical treatment (Odds ratio: 1.83, 95% confidence interval: 1.16-2.90). In addition, both VPS and LPS groups had significantly lower overall mortality rates than non-shunting group. Moreover, LPS had lower overall mortality but similar MACEs rates to VPS. The cao vit gibbon (Nomascus nasutus) is one of the rarest primates on Earth and now only survives in a single forest patch of less than 5000 ha on the Vietnam-China border. Accurate monitoring of the last remaining population is critical to inform ongoing conservation interventions and track conservation success over time. However, traditional methods for monitoring gibbons, involving triangulation of groups from their songs, are inherently subjective and likely subject to considerable measurement errors. To overcome this, we aimed to use 'vocal fingerprinting' to distinguish the different singing males in the population. During the 2021 population survey, we complemented the traditional observations made by survey teams with a concurrent passive acoustic monitoring array. Counts of gibbon group sizes were also assisted with a UAV-mounted thermal camera. After identifying eight family groups in the acoustic data and incorporating long-term data, we estimate that the population was comprised of 74 individuals in 11 family groups, which is 38% smaller than previously thought. We have no evidence that the population has declined-indeed it appears to be growing, with new groups having formed in recent years-and the difference is instead due to double-counting of groups in previous surveys employing the triangulation method. Indeed, using spatially explicit capture-recapture modelling, we uncovered substantial measurement error in the bearings and distances from field teams. We also applied semi- and fully-automatic approaches to clustering the male calls into groups, finding no evidence that we had missed any males with the manual approach. Given the very small size of the population, conservation actions are now even more urgent, in particular habitat restoration to allow the population to expand. Currently, over 200,000 new cases of leprosy are reported annually worldwide. Although leprosy was thought to have been eradicated in Taiwan, a few new cases still occur annually. Protean clinical manifestations of leprosy and immunological reactions result in delayed diagnoses. In addition, drug-resistant leprosy is emerging and poses treatment challenges. In this retrospective study, we collected and analyzed the clinicopathological features, leprosy type, treatment response, and relapse rate of patients with leprosy in our hospital between January 2009 and November 2022. We found that 54% of patients were Indonesian, and borderline lepromatous leprosy was predominant (39%); moreover, histoid leprosy and the Lucio phenomenon were also reported. Polymerase chain reaction analysis identified four positive cases, including a dapsone-resistant (4%) case. Our findings indicated good control of leprosy and a lower rate of dapsone resistance than that reported by the World Health Organization (4% vs. 13%) from 2009 to 2015. We found that the patient profile in terms of the treatment duration, recurrence rate, systemic symptoms, and neurological symptoms did not differ between before and during the pandemic. We report the recent advances in leprosy diagnosis, drug-resistant gene mutations, post-exposure prophylaxis, vaccination, and the effect of coronavirus disease 2019 on leprosy to facilitate updated leprosy diagnosis and management.

The pentatricopeptide repeat ( PPR ) gene family is one of the largest gene families in land plants. However, current knowledge about the evolution of the PPR gene family remains largely limited. In this study, we performed a comparative genomic analysis of the PPR gene family in O. sativa and its wild progenitor, O. rufipogon , and outlined a comprehensive landscape of gene duplications. Our findings suggest that the majority of PPR genes originated from dispersed duplications. Although segmental duplications have only expanded approximately 11.30% and 13.57% of the PPR gene families in the O. sativa and O. rufipogon genomes, we interestingly obtained evidence that segmental duplication promotes the structural diversity of PPR genes through incomplete gene duplications. In the O. sativa and O. rufipogon genomes, 10 (~33.33%) and 22 pairs of gene duplications (~45.83%) had non- PPR paralogous genes through incomplete gene duplication. Segmental duplications leading to incomplete gene duplications might result in the acquisition of domains, thus promoting functional innovation and structural diversification of PPR genes. This study offers a unique perspective on the evolution of PPR gene structures and underscores the potential role of segmental duplications in PPR gene structural diversity.

Objective: The COVID-19 pandemic has had an enormous impact on society and the medical environment in Taiwan in 2022. As pregnant women with COVID-19 are at higher risk for multiple complications, Taiwan needs a COVID-19 specialized maternity unit to improve the quality of maternal and neonatal care., Materials and Methods: We share our experience with specialized maternity unit for pregnant women with COVID-19 at the National Cheng Kung University Hospital, where we can have careful evaluation, safe birth, and comprehensive postpartum care., Results: Our COVID-19 specialized maternity unit enrolled 253 pregnant women with COVID-19, 90 (35.6%) pregnant women were admitted to the specialized maternity unit, and 71 (28.1%) pregnant women gave birth during hospitalization in two months. All pregnant women recovery well and real-time polymerase chain reaction tests on all infants were negative for COVID-19., Conclusion: A specialized maternity unit can provide pregnant women with a safe birth environment, immediate maternity care, and high medical quality. It can also help health workers in non-specialized maternity units deal with COVID-19-related psychological stress. Background: Testing for prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is often recommended for men with a potential risk of prostate cancer (PCa) before requiring advanced examination. However, the best PSA cutoff value remains controversial., Object: We compared the predictive performance of age-specific percentile-based PSA thresholds with a conventional cutoff of >4 ng/mL for the risk of PCa., Methods: We included men who received PSA measurements between 2003 and 2017 in a medical center in Taiwan. Logistic regression modeling was used to assess the association between age-specific percentile-based PSA thresholds and PCa risk in age subgroups. We further applied C-statistic and decision curve analysis to compare the predictive performance of age-specific percentile-based PSA with that of a conventional cutoff PSA., Results: We identified 626 patients with PCa and 40 836 patients without PCa. The slope of PSA in patients >60-year-old was almost 3 times that of those <60-year-old (0.713 vs 0.259). The risk effect sizes of the 75th percentile PSA cutoff (<60-year-old: 2.19; 60-70-year-old: 4.36; >70-year-old: 5.84 ng/mL) were comparable to those observed based on the conventional cutoff in all age groups. However, the discrimination performance of the 75th percentile PSA cutoff was better than that of the conventional cutoff among patients aged <60-year-old (C-statistic, 0.783 vs. 0.729, p < 0.05). Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most prevalent men's cancer in America and Western countries. No effective therapies are currently available for PCa aggressiveness, including castration-resistant progression (CRPC). This study aims at evaluation of the prospective efficacy and the molecular mechanism of scandenolone (SCA), a natural isoflavone, in PCa progression. SCA suppressed cell viability and progression and induced apoptosis in PCa cells. SCA inhibited the expression of lipogenesis and cholesterogenesis related key genes. Through inhibition of these metabolic genes, SCA decreased the levels of fatty acids, lipid droplets and cholesterols in PCa cells. Moreover, SCA enhanced the expression of antioxidant factors, including Nrf2, HO-1, catalase and SOD-1, and reduced the ROS levels in PCa cells. Substantially, SCA displayed the potential efficacy on CRPC tumors. This paper offers a new insight into the underlying molecular basis of SCA in PCa cells. Background: Endoscopic management of upper tract urothelial cancer (UTUC) is an important treatment option for low risk UTUC. Although Taiwan is an endemic area for UTUC, endoscopic treatment outcomes in Taiwan are frequently under- reported., Methods: This study retrospectively reviewed the treatment outcomes of endoscopic management for clinically localized UTUC. Patients with biopsy or washing cytology confirmed UTUC who underwent endoscopic or percutaneous management with a curative intent were retrospectively reviewed for eligibility of analysis. Those cases without pre-intervention confirmed UTUC, and metastatic or nodal disease at diagnosis were excluded., Results: In total, 307 patients who underwent endoscopic management were reviewed and 279 cases were eligible for final analysis. With a median follow-up of 44.3 months (inter-quartile range (IQR): 23.4-76.4 months), 117 cases (46.4%) were endoscopic cured after median one session (range:1-8; IQR:1-2) of endoscopic treatment. Those endoscopic cured UTUC was associated with more small-sized tumor, more low-grade biopsied-histology, less concomitant bladder UC and less pre-operative hydronephrosis. In addition, 201(79.7%) cases among 252 cases with confirmed oncological outcome were free of UTUC at the end of follow-up and only 43 (17%) patients had a UTUC related mortality. Salvage RNU offered a better tumor free survival rate (92% vs. 77.5%) than those without salvage RNU in those UTUC refractory to endoscopic management. In multivariable analyses, pre-operative hydronephrosis was the independent risk factor for OS. Multiplicity and concomitant bladder UC were independent risk factors for DFS., Conclusions: We confirmed the consistent safety and efficacy of endoscopic management of clinical localized UTUC in a highly UTUC endemic area like Taiwan. Metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) is a progressive stage of prostate cancer that often spreads to the bone. Radium-223, a bone-targeting radiopharmaceutical, has been shown to improve the overall survival in mCRPC in patients without visceral metastasis. However, the impact of prior systemic therapy on the treatment outcome of mCRPC patients receiving radium-223 remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the optimal choice of systemic therapy before radium-223 in mCRPC patients. The study included 41 mCRPC patients who received radium-223 therapy, with 22 receiving prior enzalutamide and 19 receiving prior abiraterone. The results showed that the median overall survival was significantly longer in the enzalutamide group than in the abiraterone group (25.1 months vs. 14.8 months, p = 0.049). Moreover, the number of patients requiring blood transfusion was higher in the abiraterone group than in the enzalutamide group (9.1% vs. 26.3%, p = 0.16). The study also found that the number of doses of Radium-223 received was significantly associated with overall survival (≥5 vs. <5, HR 0.028, 95%CI 0.003-0.231, p = 0.001). Our study provides insights into the optimal treatment choice for mCRPC prior to radium-223, indicating that enzalutamide prior to radium-223 administration may have better outcomes compared to abiraterone in mCRPC patients without visceral metastasis.

Background: Lumbar degenerative disc disease (LDDD) is a leading cause of chronic lower back pain; however, a lack of clear diagnostic criteria and solid LDDD interventional therapies have made predicting the benefits of therapeutic strategies challenging. Our goal is to develop machine learning (ML)-based radiomic models based on pre-treatment imaging for predicting the outcomes of lumbar nucleoplasty (LNP), which is one of the interventional therapies for LDDD., Methods: The input data included general patient characteristics, perioperative medical and surgical details, and pre-operative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) results from 181 LDDD patients receiving lumbar nucleoplasty. Post-treatment pain improvements were categorized as clinically significant (defined as a ≥80% decrease in the visual analog scale) or non-significant. To develop the ML models, T2-weighted MRI images were subjected to radiomic feature extraction, which was combined with physiological clinical parameters. After data processing, we developed five ML models: support vector machine, light gradient boosting machine, extreme gradient boosting, extreme gradient boosting random forest, and improved random forest. Model performance was measured by evaluating indicators, such as the confusion matrix, accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, F1 score, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), which were acquired using an 8:2 allocation of training to testing sequences., Results: Among the five ML models, the improved random forest algorithm had the best performance, with an accuracy of 0.76, a sensitivity of 0.69, a specificity of 0.83, an F1 score of 0.73, and an AUC of 0.77. The most influential clinical features included in the ML models were pre-operative VAS and age. In contrast, the most influential radiomic features had the correlation coefficient and gray-scale co-occurrence matrix., Conclusions: We developed an ML-based model for predicting pain improvement after LNP for patients with LDDD. We hope this tool will provide both doctors and patients with better information for therapeutic planning and decision-making.

Wild animals may encounter multiple challenges especially food shortage and altered diet composition in their suboptimal ranges. Yet, how the gut microbiome responds to dietary changes remains poorly understood. Prior studies on wild animal microbiomes have typically leaned upon relatively coarse dietary records and individually unresolved fecal samples. Here, we conducted a longitudinal study integrating 514 time-series individually recognized fecal samples with parallel fine-grained dietary data from two Skywalker hoolock gibbon (Hoolock tianxing) groups populating high-altitude mountainous forests in western Yunnan Province, China. 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing showed a remarkable seasonal fluctuation in the gibbons' gut microbial community structure both across individuals and between the social groups, especially driven by the relative abundances of Lanchnospiraceae and Oscillospiraceae associated with fluctuating consumption of leaf. Metagenomic functional profiling revealed that diverse metabolisms associated with cellulose degradation and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production were enriched in the high-leaf periods possibly to compensate for energy intake. Genome-resolved metagenomics further enabled the resolving metabolic capacities associated with carbohydrate breakdown among community members which exhibited a high degree of functional redundancy. Our results highlight a taxonomically and functionally sensitive gut microbiome actively responding to the seasonally shifting diet, facilitating the survival and reproduction of the endangered gibbon species in their suboptimal habitats., (© 2023. Meningiomas are the most frequently diagnosed primary intracranial tumors in adults. Surgical resection is preferred if the meningioma is accessible; for those that are not suitable for surgical resection, radiotherapy should be considered to improve local tumor control. However, recurrent meningiomas are challenging to treat, as the recurrent tumor might be located in the previously irradiated area. Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) is a highly selective radiotherapy modality in which the cytotoxic effect focuses mainly on cells with increased uptake of boron-containing drugs. In this article, we describe four patients with recurrent meningiomas treated with BNCT in Taiwan. The mean boron-containing drug tumor-to-normal tissue uptake ratio was 4.125, and the tumor mean dose was 29.414 GyE, received via BNCT. The treatment response showed two stable diseases, one partial response, and one complete response. We also introduce and support the effectiveness and safety of BNCT as an alternative salvage treatment for recurrent meningiomas.

It remains controversial whether elderly patients with transverse colon cancer present worse prognoses. Our study utilized evidence from multi-center databases to evaluate the perioperative and oncology outcomes of radical resection of colon cancer in elderly and nonelderly patients. In this study, we analyzed 416 patients with transverse colon cancer who underwent radical surgery from January 2004 to May 2017, including 151 elderly (aged ≥ 65 years) and 265 nonelderly (aged < 65 years) patients. We retrospectively compared the perioperative and oncological outcomes between these 2 groups. The median follow-up in the elderly and nonelderly groups was 52 and 64 months, respectively. There were no significant differences in the overall survival (OS) (P = .300) and disease-free survival (DFS) (P = .380) between the elderly and nonelderly groups. However, the elderly group had longer hospital stays (P < .001), a higher complication rate (P = .027), and fewer lymph nodes harvested (P = .002). The N classification and differentiation were significantly associated with OS based on univariate analysis, and the N classification was an independent prognostic factor for OS based on multivariate analysis (P < .05). Similarly, the N classification and differentiation were significantly correlated with the DFS based on univariate analysis. However, multivariate analysis indicated that the N classification was an independent prognostic factor for DFS (P < .05). In conclusion, the survival and surgical outcomes in elderly patients were similar to nonelderly patients. The N classification was an independent factor for OS and DFS. For decades, numerous experimental animal models have been developed to examine the pathophysiologic mechanisms and potential treatments for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) in diverse species with varying chemical or surgical approaches. This study aimed to create an AAA mouse model by the periarterial incubation with papain, which can mimic human AAA with advantages such as simplicity, convenience, and high efficiency. Eighty C57BL/6J male mice were randomly assigned to 1 of the 4 groups: papain (1.0 or 2.0 mg), porcine pancreatic elastase, and phosphate-buffered solution. The aortic segment was wrapped for 20 minutes, and the diameter was measured using ultrasound preoperatively and postoperative days 7 and 14. Then, the mice were killed for histomorphometric and immunohistochemical analyses. According to ultrasound measurements and histomorphometric analyses, on postoperative day 7, 65% of mice in the 1.0-mg papain group and 60% of mice in the 2.0-mg papain group developed AAA. In both papain groups, 100% of mice developed AAA, and 65% of mice in the porcine pancreatic elastase group developed AAA on postoperative day 14. Furthermore, hematoxylin/eosin, elastin van Gieson, and Masson staining of tissues from the papain group revealed thickened media and intimal hyperplasia, collagen sediments, and elastin destruction, indicating that AAA histochemical alteration was similar to that of humans. In addition, the immunohistochemical analysis was conducted to detect infiltrated inflammatory cells, such as macrophages and leukocytes, in the aortic wall and hyperplasic adventitia. The expression of matrix metalloproteinase 2 and 9 was significantly upregulated in papain and human AAA tissues. This study aimed to evaluate the learning curve of transperineal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)/ultrasound (US) fusion biopsy in a team composed of a single surgeon, a single radiologist, and a single pathologist. We prospectively enrolled 206 patients undergoing MRI/US fusion prostate biopsy and divided them into four cohorts by the year of biopsy. We analyzed temporal changes in clinically significant prostate cancer (csPC) detection rate, percentage of positive cores on biopsy, and Gleason upgrading rate after radical prostatectomy. The csPC detection rate by MRI/US fusion targeted biopsy (TB) increased significantly (from 35.3% to 60.0%, p = 0.01). With increased experience, the csPC detection rates for small (≤1 cm) and anterior target lesions gradually increased (from 41.2% to 51.6%, p = 0.5; from 54.5% to 88.2%, p = 0.8, respectively). The percentage of positive cores on TB increased significantly (from 18.4% to 44.2%, p = 0.001). The Gleason upgrading rate gradually decreased (from 22.2% to 11.1%, p = 0.4). In conclusion, with accumulated experience and teamwork, the csPC detection rate by TB significantly increased. Multidisciplinary team meetings and a free-hand biopsy technique were the key factors for overcoming the learning curve.

Species shift their distribution in response to climate and land-cover change, which may result in a spatial mismatch between currently protected areas (PAs) and priority conservation areas (PCAs). We examined the effects of climate and land-cover change on potential range of gibbons and sought to identify PCAs that would conserve them effectively. We collected global gibbon occurrence points and modeled (ecological niche model) their current and potential 2050s ranges under climate-change and different land-cover-change scenarios. We examined change in range and PA coverage between the current and future ranges of each gibbon species. We applied spatial conservation prioritization to identify the top 30% PCAs for each species. We then determined how much of the PCAs are conserved in each country within the global range of gibbons. On average, 31% (SD 22) of each species' current range was covered in PAs. PA coverage of the current range of 9 species was <30%. Nine species lost on average 46% (SD 29) of their potential range due to climate change. Under climate-change with an optimistic land-cover-change scenario (B1), 12 species lost 39% (SD 28) of their range. In a pessimistic land-cover-change scenario (A2), 15 species lost 36% (SD 28) of their range. Five species lost significantly more range under the A2 scenario than the B1 scenario (p = 0.01, SD 0.01), suggesting that gibbons will benefit from effective management of land cover. PA coverage of future range was <30% for 11 species. On average, 32% (SD 25) of PCAs were covered by PAs. Indonesia contained more species and PCAs and thus has the greatest responsibility for gibbon conservation. Indonesia, India, and Myanmar need to expand their PAs to fulfill their responsibility to gibbon conservation. Background: Binge eating (BE) is considered a marker of obesity and overweight and a significant characteristic of feeding and eating disorders. Despite the high prevalence of obesity on college campuses, the issue of BE among college students in Taiwan has received little attention. The aim of this study was to investigate BE behavior among overweight college students in Taiwan and associated factors., Methods: This study utilized a cross-sectional survey. A total of 300 overweight college students were recruited through convenience sampling. Data were collected using a self-administered Binge Eating Scale (BES) and a body weight composition monitor (Model No. OMRON, HBF-126) and analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and regression analysis., Results: The average BES score was 10.67 (SD = 6.66, 0-34). With a BES score of 17 as the cut-off point, 17.3% (n = 52) of the participants were found to have moderate or severe BE behavior. Analysis of the demographic and psychosocial data using Spearman's rho rank correlation coefficient revealed that sex, body mass index (BMI), uncontrolled eating, weight loss diets, academic stress, peer competition, interpersonal distress, and unpleasant or major life events were significantly correlated with BE behavior and its probability (r s = -0.14-0.15, p < 0.05). Furthermore, logistic regression analysis indicated that the odds ratio of the BES scores of female participants and those who stated to have experienced uncontrolled eating, weight loss diets, peer competition, and interpersonal distress was 1.05-6.04 times those of male participants and those without such experiences ( p < 0.05)., Conclusion: The study found that nearly one-fifth of participants presented moderate to severe levels of BE behaviors, and these were significantly correlated with sex and external environmental stress. This study suggests early intervention from campus psychological health personnel to provide proper therapy.

The sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) and quick sequential organ failure assessment (qSOFA) scores are new tools which are used to assess sepsis based on the Third International Consensus Definitions for Sepsis and Septic Shock Task Force. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using the SOFA and qSOFA to predict post-ureteroscopic lithotripsy (URSL) sepsis. Patients who underwent URSL due to ureteral stone obstruction were retrospectively reviewed using SOFA and qSOFA scores. Patient characteristics including age, gender, comorbidities, American Society of Anesthesiologists Classification, stone burden, stone location, hydronephrosis status, infectious status, preoperative SOFA and qSOFA score were collected. Preoperative factors were analyzed to determine if they were correlated with postoperative sepsis. A total of 830 patients were included in this study, of whom 32 (3.9%) had postoperative sepsis. Multivariate analysis revealed that older age, proximal ureteral stones, severe hydronephrosis, and high preoperative qSOFA or SOFA score were significantly associated with postoperative sepsis. The areas under the curves of a qSOFA score ≥ 1 and SOFA score ≥ 2 for predicting postoperative sepsis were 0.754 and 0.823, respectively. Preoperative qSOFA and SOFA scores are convenient and effective for predicting post-URSL sepsis. The aim of this study was to investigate the outcomes of re-adjustable male slings in pa-tients with postoperative stress urinary incontinence (SUI) following radical prostatectomy (RP). We retrospectively analyzed 18 patients with SUI following RP for prostate cancer, who were treated with re-adjustable male slings from January 2016 to December 2021. The clinical outcomes were evaluated based on daily pad usage and urodynamic studies, both preoperatively and post-operatively. The degree of SUI was categorized as either mild, moderate, or severe. Success was defined as no more pad use or significantly decreased pad use. Complications were classified ac-cording to the Clavien-Dindo system. The mean age of patients was 70.4 ± 5.9 years, and 61.1% of cases were diagnosed as locally advanced prostate cancer. Mild, moderate, and severe SUI were reported as 33.3%, 50.0%, and 16.7%, respectively. The average daily pad use after RP was 3.3 pads and there was a significant reduction in the number of daily pads used after the re-adjustable male sling procedure (3.3 vs. 1.3; p = 0.002). Overall, the operation was considered successful in 11 pa-tients (61.1%), 1 case showed improvement (5.6%), and it was considered unsuccessful in 6 patients (33.3%). Impressively, in the severe incontinence subgroup (three patients), one (33.3%) had im-provement and one (33.3%) had success. Transient perineal discomfort after the operation was the most common complaint. However, two patients had severe complications with bowel injury during sling implantation (Clavien-Dindo grade III). The re-adjustable male sling system was an efficient surgical treatment option for post-RP SUI, even in a locally advanced disease dominant population. One should pay attention to the complication of bowel perforation during surgery.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most common cancer in men, and this has been mainly noticed in Western and Asian countries. The aggregations of PCa and castration-resistant PCa (CRPC) progression are the crucial causes in the mortality of patients without the effective treatment. To seek new remedies for the lethal PCa diseases is currently an urgent need. In this study, we endeavored to investigate the therapeutic efficacy of alpinumisoflavone (AIF), a natural product, in PCa. LNCaP (androgen- sensitive) and C4-2 (CRPC) PCa cells were used. An MTT-based method, soft agar colony forming assay, biological progression approaches were applied to determine cell viability, migration, and invasion. A fatty acid quantification kit, a cholesterol detection kit and oil red O staining were conducted to analyze the intracellular levels of lipids and cholesterols. Apoptosis assays were also performed. AIF reduced cell viability, migration, and invasion in PCa cells. The expression of androgen receptor (AR), fatty acid synthase (FASN), and 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGCR) was substantially inhibited by AIF treatment in PCa cells. Furthermore, by inhibiting FASN and HMGCR expression, AIF decreased the amounts of intracellular fatty acids, cholesterols, and lipid droplets in PCa cells. Significantly, through coordinated targeting FASN- and HMGCR-regulated biosynthesis and the AR axis, AIF activated the caspase-associated apoptosis in PCa cells. These results collectively demonstrated for the first time the potential of AIF as a novel and attractive remedy and provided an alternative opportunity to cure PCa malignancy.

Preeclampsia is one of the most serious pregnancy complications. It may be caused by immunological changes in the early placental microenvironment. The contents of small EVs may serve as biomarkers of pregnancy complications. Evidence suggests that the balance between T helper 17 (Th17) and regulatory T (Treg) cells are critical for preventing preeclampsia. The study recruited 39 pregnant women with preeclampsia and 127 healthy pregnant women. We assessed the levels of both Th17 and Treg cytokines (IL-10, IL-17, IL-21, IL-22, and TGF-β) in their plasma and small EVs. We found significant differences in the levels of all cytokines in the plasma between the two groups during the second trimester. We also observed significant differences between the two groups in the levels of EV-encapsulated cytokines IL-21, IL-22, and TGF-β, as well as in total small EVs, during the second trimester. The ROC analysis showed that the classification efficiency (AUC) of TGF-β in small EVs was 0.81. TGF-β had the best discriminant ability of all the single EV biomarkers tested, the cross-validation of the accuracy was 0.89. In recent years, organic chromium (III) supplements have received increasing attentions for their low toxicity, high bioavailability and wide range of health-promoting benefits. This study aimed to investigate the preventive effects of chromium (III)-enriched yeast (YCr) on high-fat and high-fructose diet (HFHFD)-induced hyperlipidemia and hyperglycemia in mice, and further clarify its mechanism of action from the perspective of intestinal microbiomics and liver metabolomics. The results indicated that oral administration of YCr remarkably inhibited the aberrant elevations of body weight, blood glucose and lipid levels, hepatic cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) levels caused by HFHFD. Liver histological examination showed that oral YCr intervention inhibited HFHFD induced liver lipid accumulation. Besides, 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing showed that YCr intervention was beneficial to ameliorating intestinal microbiota dysbiosis by altering the proportion of some intestinal microbial phylotypes. Correlation-based network analysis indicated that the key intestinal microbial phylotypes intervened by YCr were closely related to some biochemical parameters associated with glucose and lipid metabolism. Liver metabolomics analysis revealed that dietary YCr intervention significantly regulated the levels of some biomarkers involved in purine metabolism, glycerophospholipid metabolism, citrate cycle, pyrimidine metabolism, glycerophospholipid metabolism, phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan biosynthesis, and so on. Moreover, dietary YCr intervention regulated the mRNA levels of key genes associated with glucose, cholesterol, fatty acids and bile acids metabolism in liver. Purpose: Nowadays most children with congenital heart disease (CHD) are expected to survive to adulthood. The healthcare focus needs to pay close attention to the important developmental tasks during their growth process. The women with CHD face some challenges in their critically developmental stages during pregnancy, delivery, and even motherhood. The lived experience of being a mother needs to be further concerned. This study aimed to explore the lived experience of first-time mothers with CHD., Methods: Descriptive phenomenological design was adopted. Semi-structured interviews were conducted from April to August 2018 with 11 primiparous women with CHD, who were recruited from the pediatric and adult cardiology outpatient departments at a medical center and who had a child aged between 6 months and 3 years. Giorgi's phenomenological analysis method was employed., Results: Six main themes arose from the analysis: (1) recognizing pregnancy risks, (2) performing self-care for health, (3) building self-worth from my baby, (4) adapting to postpartum life and adjusting priorities, (5) enjoying being a first-time mother, and (6) the factors contributing to success in high-risk childbirth., Conclusions: The experiences that occurred prior to and after labor that were identified in this study can assist women with CHD to more capably prepare for and understand the process of becoming a mother, including recognition of the importance of a prepregnancy evaluation. Urticaria is a prevalent disease with substantial physical, psychological, and economic impacts. With the advent of understandings of the disease and the emerging evidence of treatments, the international guidelines for treating urticaria have been updated in recent years. In order to update the 2014 edition of the Taiwanese Dermatological Association (TDA) consensus of urticaria, a total of 17 dermatologists with extensive experience in urticaria management were invited to and attended the TDA consensus meetings. All the specific aspects of the content were approved by at least 75% of the experts in attendance. Comparing to the former edition, several substantial modifications were made. For diagnosis, D-dimer was added as the recommended routine test in patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria. For pharmacological management, treatment suggestions were simplified. The approved-dosed, the up-dosed second-generation antihistamines, omalizumab, and cyclosporine were listed as the first-line to the fourth-line treatment, respectively. In addition, the management for patients of special considerations, such as the elderly, children, and pregnant women, were all discussed and mentioned in the consensus. Objective: To assess the effects of trimetazidine (TMZ) added to conventional drug therapy on cardiac autonomic nervous CANS in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) after the percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)., Study Design: Descriptive study., Place and Duration of Study:  Department of Cardiology, The Second Hospital of Hebei Medical University, Hebei, China, from May 2018 to September 2019., Methodology: The study included 50 patients with CHD after a successful PCI who received trimetazidine plus conventional therapy were included as cases (exposed group), and 50 matched patients were identified as controls (non-exposed group). Heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) parameters including sympathetic activity (SDNN, LF), parasympathetic activity (RMSSD, pNN50, SDSD, HF), and sympathovagal balance (LF/HF ratio) were used to evaluate CANS function., Results: There were no statistical differences in the HR and HRV parameters before and after PCI (p>0.05). In the non-exposed group, conventional therapy significantly improved the HRV parameters (all p<0.05), while not affecting HR (p>0.05). In the exposed group, all HRV parameters except HR were improved after 4 weeks of treatment. After 4 weeks of treatment, the exposed group had higher parasympathetic-nerve activity, lower sympathetic-nerve activity, and LF/HF ratio compared to the non-exposed group (all p<0.05)., Conclusions: The application of TMZ based on conventional therapy effectively improved the CANS in CHD patients who underwent PCI., Key Words: Coronary heart disease, Percutaneous coronary intervention, Trimetazidine, Cardiac autonomic nervous system, Heart rate variability.

Background: The advantages and disadvantages of transperineal and transrectal biopsies remain controversial in the era of prostate targeted biopsy. In this study, we compared the cancer detection and complication rates of transperineal magnetic resonance/ultrasound (MR/US) fusion biopsy and transrectal cognitive fusion biopsy of the prostate., Methods: This was a comparative study of two prospectively collected cohorts. Men with clinically suspected prostate cancer and prostate imaging reporting and data system (PI-RADS) score ≥ 3 lesions on multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) were enrolled. They underwent either transperineal software fusion biopsy or transrectal cognitive fusion biopsy and systematic biopsy. The detection rates of any prostate cancer and clinically significant prostate cancer (csPC, defined as Gleason score ≥ 3 + 4) and the complication rates between both groups were analysed., Results: Ninety-two and 85 patients underwent transperineal software fusion and transrectal cognitive fusion biopsies, respectively. The detection rate for any prostate cancer was similar between both groups (60.8% vs. 56.4%, p = 0.659). In terms of csPC detection, transperineal fusion biopsy outperformed transrectal fusion biopsy (52.2% vs. 36.5%, p = 0.036). In multivariate regression analysis, age, PI-RADS score > 3, and transperineal route were significant predictors of csPC. Meanwhile, transperineal biopsy resulted in a higher rate of urinary retention than transrectal biopsy (18.5% vs. 4.7%, p = 0.009). No serious infectious complications were noted, although a patient developed sepsis after transrectal biopsy., Conclusions: Transperineal software fusion biopsy provided a higher csPC detection rate than transrectal cognitive fusion biopsy and carried minimal risk for infectious complications in patients with MRI-visible prostate lesions., (© 2022. Probiotics have been proved to have beneficial effects in improving hyperlipidemia. The purpose of the current research was to investigate the ameliorative effects of Pediococcus acidilactici FZU106, isolated from the traditional brewing of Hongqu rice wine, on lipid metabolism and intestinal microbiota in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced hyperlipidemic rats. Results showed that P. acidilactici FZU106 intervention obviously inhibited the abnormal increase of body weight, ameliorated serum and liver biochemical parameters related to lipid metabolism and oxidative stress. Histopathological evaluation also showed that P. acidilactici FZU106 could significantly reduce the excessive lipid accumulation in liver caused by HFD-feeding. Furthermore, P. acidilactici FZU106 intervention significantly increased the short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) levels in HFD-fed rats, which was closely related to the changes of intestinal microbial composition and metabolism. Intestinal microbiota profiling by high-throughput sequencing demonstrated that P. acidilactici FZU106 intervention evidently increased the proportion of Butyricicoccus , Pediococcus , Rothia , Globicatella and [Eubacterium]&#95;coprostanoligenes &#95;group, and decreased the proportion of Corynebacterium &#95;1, Psychrobacter , Oscillospira , Facklamia , Pseudogracilibacillus , Clostridium&#95;innocuum &#95;group, Enteractinococcus and Erysipelothrix in HFD-fed rats. Additionally, P. acidilactici FZU106 significantly regulated the mRNA levels of liver genes (including CD36 , CYP7A1 , SREBP-1c , BSEP , LDLr and HMGCR ) involved in lipid metabolism and bile acid homeostasis. Green tea has distinct astringency, bitter taste, and typical green flavor because of its post-harvest treatment without withering and enzymatic oxidation. Microbial fermentation has been identified as a promising strategy that could give green tea infusion a special taste flavor. This might be linked to the metabolic transformation ability of microorganisms. In this study, starter culture of edible mushroom Pleurotus sajor-caju (oyster mushroom) was used for submerged fermentation of green tea infusion in order to improve its flavor and taste quality. The volatile profile determined by headspace solid-phase microextraction, coupled with gas chromatography mass spectrometry, showed that the contents of ( Z )-2-penten-1-ol and methyl heptadienone in green tea infusion were decreased significantly by the fermentation with the basidiomycete P. sajor-caju ( p < 0.01), which would alleviate the herbal and grass flavor of green tea infusion to a certain extent. Meanwhile, the contents of linalool and geraniol were increased 9.3 and 11.3 times, respectively, whereas methyl salicylate was newly produced after fermentation by P. sajor-caju , endowing the fermented tea infusion with a pleasant flower and fruit aroma. In addition, the polyphenol profile was determined using high-performance liquid chromatography equipped with ion trap mass spectrometry, and the results indicated that the contents of most polyphenols in green tea infusion decreased significantly after fermentation by P. sajor-caju . The reduction of catechins and anthocyanins in fermented green tea infusion alleviated the astringency and bitterness. Moreover, the antioxidant activity of fermented green tea infusion was obviously decreased, especially the DPPH-free radical-scavenging ability and the ferric-reducing power. However, it is noteworthy that the ABTS-free radical scavenging ability was improved compared with the unfermented one, indicating that the increased tea pigments and volatile metabolites (such as linalool and geraniol) after fermentation with P. sajor-caju may also contribute to the antioxidant capacity of fermented green tea infusion. Alcoholic liver injury is mainly caused by excessive alcohol consumption and has become a global public health problem threatening human health. It is well known that Ganoderma lucidum possesses various excellent beneficial effects on liver function and lipid metabolism. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the underlying protective effect and action mechanism of ganoderic acids-rich G. lucidum ethanol extract (GLE) on alcohol-induced liver injury in mice with excessive alcohol intake. Results showed that oral administration of GLE could obviously inhibit the abnormal increases of serum triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and also significantly protect the liver against alcohol-induced excessive hepatic lipid accumulation and pathological changes. In addition, alcohol-induced oxidative stress in liver was significantly ameliorated by the dietary intervention of GLE through reducing the hepatic levels of maleic dialdehyde (MDA) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and increasing the hepatic levels of glutathione (GSH), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH). Compared with the model group, GLE intervention significantly ameliorated the intestinal microbial disorder by elevating the relative abundance of Ruminiclostridium &#95;9, Prevotellaceae &#95;UCG-001, Oscillibacter , [Eubacterium]&#95;xylanophilum &#95;group, norank&#95;f&#95;Clostridiates&#95;vadinBB60&#95;group, GCA-900066225, Bilophila , Ruminococcaceae&#95; UCG-009, norank&#95;f&#95; Desulfovibrionaceae and Hydrogenoanaerobacterium , but decreasing the proportion of Clostridium &#95;sensu&#95; stricto &#95;1. Furthermore, liver metabolomic profiling suggested that GLE intervention had a significant regulatory effect on the composition of liver metabolites in mice with excessive alcohol intake, especially the levels of some biomarkers involved in primary bile acid biosynthesis, riboflavin metabolism, tryptophan metabolism, biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids, fructose and mannose metabolism, glycolysis/gluconeogenesis. Additionally, dietary supplementation with GLE significantly regulated the mRNA levels of key genes related to fatty acids metabolism, ethanol catabolism and inflammatory response in liver. In support of the neurodevelopmental model of schizophrenia, minor physical anomalies (MPAs) have been suggested as biomarkers and potential pathophysiological significance for schizophrenia. However, an integrated, clinically useful tool that used qualitative and quantitative MPAs to visualize and predict schizophrenia risk while characterizing the degree of importance of MPA items was lacking. We recruited a training set and a validation set, including 463 schizophrenia patients and 281 healthy controls to conduct logistic regression and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) regression to select the best parameters of MPAs and constructed nomograms. Two nomograms were built to show the weights of these predictors. In the logistic regression model, 11 out of a total of 68 parameters were identified as the best MPA items for distinguishing between patients with schizophrenia and controls, including hair whorls, epicanthus, adherent ear lobes, high palate, furrowed tongue, hyperconvex fingernails, a large gap between first and second toes, skull height, nasal width, mouth width, and palate width. The Lasso regression model included the same variables of the logistic regression model, except for nasal width, and further included two items (interpupillary distance and soft ears) to assess the risk of schizophrenia. The results of the validation dataset verified the efficacy of the nomograms with the area under the curve 0.84 and 0.85 in the logistic regression model and lasso regression model, respectively. Copper-to-copper (Cu-to-Cu) direct bonding is a promising approach to replace traditional solder joints in three-dimensional integrated circuits (3D ICs) packaging. It has been commonly conducted at a temperature over 300 °C, which is detrimental to integrated electronic devices. In this study, highly (111)-oriented nanotwinned (nt) Cu films were fabricated and polished using chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) and electropolishing. We successfully bonded and remained columnar nt-Cu microstructure at a low temperature of 150 °C thanks to the rapid diffusion of Cu on (111) surface. We employed a new microstructural method to characterize quantitatively the interfacial bonding quality using cross-sectional and plan-view microstructural analyses. We discovered that CMP nt-Cu bonding quality was greater than that of electropolished nt-Cu ones. The CMP nt-Cu films possessed extremely low surface roughness and were virtually free of pre-existing interface voids. Thus, the bonding time of such CMP nt-Cu films could be significantly shortened to 10 min. We expect that these findings may offer a pathway to reduce the thermal budget and manufacturing cost of the current 3D ICs packaging technology.
