- Abstract
We studied the initial nature and relaxation of photoexcited electronic states in CdSe nanoplatelets (NPLs). Ultrafast transient optical absorption (TA) measurements were combined with the theoretical analysis of the formation and decay of excitons, biexcitons, free charge carriers, and trions. In the latter, photons and excitons were treated as bosons and free charge carriers as fermions. The initial quantum yields of heavy-hole (HH) excitons, light-hole (LH) excitons, and charge carriers vary strongly with photon energy, while thermal relaxation occurs always within 1 ps. After that, the population of LH excitons is negligible due to relaxation to HH excitons or decay into free electrons and holes. Up to the highest average number of about four absorbed photons per NPL in our experiments, we found no signatures of the presence of biexcitons or larger complexes. Biexcitons were only observed due to the interaction of a probe-generated exciton with an exciton produced previously by the pump pulse. For higher pump photon energies, the initial presence of more free charge carriers leads to formation of trions by probe photons. On increasing the number of absorbed pump photons in an NPL, the yield of excitons becomes higher as compared to free charge carriers, since electron-hole recombination becomes more likely. In addition to a TA absorption feature at energy below the HH exciton peak, we also observed a TA signal at the high-energy side of this peak, which we attribute to formation of LH-HH biexcitons or trions consisting of a charge and LH exciton., ChemE/Opto-electronic Materials

- Abstract
Aims Recently, the cardiovascular outcomes for people using anticoagulation strategies (COMPASS) trial demonstrated that dual therapy reduced cardiovascular outcomes compared with aspirin alone in patients with stable atherosclerotic disease. Methods and We sought to assess the proportion of patients eligible for the COMPASS trial and to compare the epidemiology results and outcome of these patients with those without COMPASS inclusion or with any exclusion criteria in a contemporary, nationwide cohort of patients with stable coronary artery disease. Among the 4068 patients with detailed information allowing evaluation of eligibility, 1416 (34.8%) did not fulfil the inclusion criteria (COMPASS-Not-Included), 841 (20.7%) had exclusion criteria (COMPASS-Excluded), and the remaining 1811 (44.5%) were classified as COMPASS-Like. At 1 year, the incidence of major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE), a composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, and stroke, was 0.9% in the COMPASS-Not-Included and 2.0% in the COMPASS-Like (P = 0.01), and 5.0% in the COMPASS-Excluded group (P < 0.0001 for all comparisons). Among the COMPASS-Like population, patients with multiple COMPASS enrichment criteria presented a significant increase in the risk of MACE (from 1.0% to 3.3% in those with 1 and >_3 criteria, respectively; P = 0.012), and a modest absolute increase in major bleeding risk (from 0.2% to 0.4%, respectively; P = 0.46). Conclusion In a contemporary real-world cohort registry of stable coronary artery disease, most patients resulted as eligible for the COMPASS. These patients presented a considerable annual risk of MACE that consistently increases in the presence of multiple risk factors.

- Abstract
Mobilities and lifetimes of photogenerated charge carriers are core properties of photovoltaic materials and can both be characterized by contactless terahertz or microwave measurements. Here, the expertise from fifteen laboratories is combined to quantitatively model the current-voltage characteristics of a solar cell from such measurements. To this end, the impact of measurement conditions, alternate interpretations, and experimental inter-laboratory variations are discussed using a (Cs,FA,MA)Pb(I,Br)3 halide perovskite thin-film as a case study. At 1 sun equivalent excitation, neither transport nor recombination is significantly affected by exciton formation or trapping. Terahertz, microwave, and photoluminescence transients for the neat material yield consistent effective lifetimes implying a resistance-free JV-curve with a potential power conversion efficiency of 24.6 %. For grainsizes above ≈20 nm, intra-grain charge transport is characterized by terahertz sum mobilities of ≈32 cm2 V−1 s−1. Drift-diffusion simulations indicate that these intra-grain mobilities can slightly reduce the fill factor of perovskite solar cells to 0.82, in accordance with the best-realized devices in the literature. Beyond perovskites, this work can guide a highly predictive characterization of any emerging semiconductor for photovoltaic or photoelectrochemical energy conversion. A best practice for the interpretation of terahertz and microwave measurements on photovoltaic materials is presented., ChemE/Opto-electronic Materials

Aims Recently, the cardiovascular outcomes for people using anticoagulation strategies (COMPASS) trial demonstrated that dual therapy reduced cardiovascular outcomes compared with aspirin alone in patients with stable atherosclerotic disease. Methods and results We sought to assess the proportion of patients eligible for the COMPASS trial and to compare the epidemiology and outcome of these patients with those without COMPASS inclusion or with any exclusion criteria in a contemporary, nationwide cohort of patients with stable coronary artery disease. At 1 year, the incidence of major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE), a composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, and stroke, was 0.9% in the COMPASS-Not-Included and 2.0% in the COMPASS-Like (P = 0.01), and 5.0% in the COMPASS-Excluded group (P Conclusion In a contemporary real-world cohort registry of stable coronary artery disease, most patients resulted as eligible for the COMPASS. These patients presented a considerable annual risk of MACE that consistently increases in the presence of multiple risk factors.

Background Noise pollution is increasingly recognised as a public health hazard, yet limited evidence is available from low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), particularly for specific sources. Here, we investigated the association between day-night average (Ldn) aircraft noise and the risk of death due to cardiovascular disease (CVD), stroke and coronary heart disease (CHD) at small-area level around São Paulo‘s Congonhas airport, Brazil during the period 2011–2016. Methods We selected 3259 census tracts across 16 districts partially or entirely exposed to ≥50 dB aircraft noise levels around the Congonhas airport, using pre-modelled 5 dB Ldn noise bands (≤50 dB to > 65 dB). We estimated the average noise exposure per census tract using area-weighting. Age, sex and calendar year-specific death counts for CVD, stroke and CHD were calculated by census tract, according to the residential address at time of death. We fitted Poisson regression models to quantify the risk associated with aircraft noise exposure, adjusting for age, sex, calendar year and area-level covariates including socioeconomic development, ethnicity, smoking and road traffic related noise and air pollution. Results After accounting for all covariates, areas exposed to the highest levels of noise (> 65 dB) showed a relative risk (RR) for CVD and CHD of 1.06 (95% CI: 0.94; 1.20) and 1.11 (95%CI: 0.96; 1.27), respectively, compared to those exposed to reference noise levels (≤50 dB). The RR for stroke ranged between 1.05 (95%CI: 0.95;1.16) and 0.91 (95%CI: 0.78;1.11) for all the noise levels assessed. We found a statistically significant positive trend for CVD and CHD mortality risk with increasing levels of noise (p = 0.043 and p = 0.005, respectively). No significant linear trend was found for stroke. Risk estimates were generally higher after excluding road traffic density, suggesting that road traffic air and noise pollution are potentially important confounders. Conclusions This study provides some evidence that aircraft noise is associated with increased risk of CVD and CHD mortality in a middle-income setting. More research is needed to validate these results in other LMIC settings and to further explore the influence of residual confounding and ecological bias. Remarkably, 60% of the study population living near the Congonhas airport (~ 1.5 million) were exposed to aircraft noise levels > 50 dB, well above those recommended by the WHO (45 dB), highlighting the need for public health interventions.

- Abstract
We studied the nature of excitons in the transition metal dichalcogenide alloy Mo0.6W0.4S2 compared to pure MoS2 and WS2 grown by atomic layer deposition (ALD). For this, optical absorption/transmission spectroscopy and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) were used. The effects of temperature on A and B exciton peak energies and line widths in optical transmission spectra were compared between the alloy and pure MoS2 and WS2. On increasing the temperature from 25 to 293 K, the energy of the A and B exciton peaks decreases, while their line width increases due to exciton-phonon interactions. The exciton-phonon interactions in the alloy are closer to those for MoS2 than those for WS2. This suggests that exciton wave functions in the alloy have a larger amplitude on Mo atoms than that on W atoms. The experimental absorption spectra could be reproduced by TDDFT calculations. Interestingly, for the alloy, the Mo and W atoms had to be distributed over all layers. Conversely, we could not reproduce the experimental alloy spectrum by calculations on a structure with alternating layers, in which every other layer contains only Mo atoms and the layers in between also contain W atoms. For the latter atomic arrangement, the TDDFT calculations yielded an additional optical absorption peak that could be due to excitons with some charge transfer character. From these results, we conclude that ALD yields an alloy in which Mo and W atoms are distributed uniformly among all layers., ChemE/Opto-electronic Materials

- Abstract
Few-layered transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are increasingly popular materials for optoelectronics and catalysis. Among the various types of TMDs available today, rhenium chalcogenides (ReX2) stand out due to their remarkable electronic structure, such as the occurrence of anisotropic excitons and potential direct band gap behavior throughout multilayered stacks. In this paper, we have analyzed the nature and dynamics of charge carriers in highly crystalline liquid-phase exfoliated ReS2, using a unique combination of optical pump-THz probe and broad-band transient absorption spectroscopy. Two distinct time regimes are identified, both of which are dominated by unbound charge carriers despite the high exciton binding energy. In the first time regime, the unbound charge carriers cause an increase and a broadening of the exciton absorption band. In the second time regime, a peculiar narrowing of the excitonic absorption profile is observed, which we assign to the presence of built-in fields and/or charged defects. Our results pave the way to analyze spectrally complex transient absorption measurements on layered TMD materials and indicate the potential for ReS2 to produce mobile free charge carriers, a feat relevant for photovoltaic applications., Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public., ChemE/Opto-electronic Materials

Aims We evaluated the 1-year clinical events, pharmacological management, and quality of life in a contemporary cohort of stable coronary artery disease (CAD) patients managed by cardiologists. Methods and results START (STable Coronary Artery Diseases RegisTry) was a prospective, observational, nationwide study that enrolled 5070 stable CAD patients over 3 months in 183 cardiology centres in Italy. At 1 year, 4790 (94.5%) patients had data on vital status. Death occurred in 107 (2.2%) patients and the cause of death was cardiovascular in 41 (38.3%) of cases. Among the 4775 patients with follow-up data on clinical events available, a hospitalization due to cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular causes occurred in 523 (11.0%) and in 231 (4.8%) of cases, respectively. Over 60% of patients reported as ‘no problems’ in all domains (61.4–84.5%) of the EuroQoL quality of life 5D-5L questionnaire. Among the 3239 patients with clinical visit/telephone interview at follow-up, in whom optimal medical therapy (OMT; aspirin or thienopyridine, β-blocker, and statin) was prescribed at enrolment, 2971 (91.7%) were still receiving OMT at follow-up. At multivariable analysis, only increasing age (odds ratio 0.98; 95% confidence interval 0.97–0.99; P = 0.04) resulted as independent negative predictor of OMT persistence at 1 year from enrolment. Conclusion In this large, contemporary registry, stable CAD patients managed by cardiologists presented a high rate of clinical events at 1 year. Nevertheless, the persistence to OMT and quality of life appeared reasonable.

- Abstract
We show that the finite lateral sizes of ultrathin CdSe nanoplatelets strongly affect both their photoluminescence and optical absorption spectra. This is in contrast to the situation in quantum wells, in which the large lateral sizes may be assumed to be infinite. The lateral sizes of the nanoplatelets are varied over a range of a few to tens of nanometers. For these sizes excitons experience in-plane quantum confinement, and their center-of-mass motion becomes quantized. Our direct experimental observation of the discretization of the exciton center-of-mass states can be well understood on the basis of the simple particle-in-a-box model., ChemE/Opto-electronic Materials

- Abstract
Solution-processable two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors with chemically tunable thickness and associated tunable band gaps are highly promising materials for ultrathin optoelectronics. Here, the properties of free charge carriers and excitons in 2D PbS nanosheets of different thickness are investigated by means of optical pump-terahertz probe spectroscopy. By analyzing the frequency-dependent THz response, a large quantum yield of excitons is found. The scattering time of free charge carriers increases with nanosheet thickness, which is ascribed to reduced effects of surface defects and ligands in thicker nanosheets. The data discussed provide values for the DC mobility in the range 550-1000 cm2 V-1 s-1 for PbS nanosheets with thicknesses ranging from 4 to 16 nm. Results underpin the suitability of colloidal 2D PbS nanosheets for optoelectronic applications., Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public., ChemE/Opto-electronic Materials

- Abstract
It has been shown recently that atomically coherent superstructures of a nanocrystal monolayer in thickness can be prepared by self-assembly of monodisperse PbSe nanocrystals, followed by oriented attachment. Superstructures with a honeycomb nanogeometry are of special interest, as theory has shown that they are regular 2-D semiconductors, but with the highest valence and lowest conduction bands being Dirac-type, that is, with a linear energy-momentum relation around the K-points in the zone. Experimental validation will require cryogenic measurements on single sheets of these nanocrystal monolayer superstructures. Here, we show that we can incorporate these fragile superstructures into a transistor device with electrolyte gating, control the electron density, and measure the electron transport characteristics at room temperature. The electron mobility is 1.5 ± 0.5 cm2 V-1 s-1, similar to the mobility observed with terahertz spectroscopy on freestanding superstructures. The terahertz spectroscopic data point to pronounced carrier scattering on crystallographic imperfections in the superstructure, explaining the limited mobility., ChemE/Opto-electronic Materials

In the last twenty years, powerful new molecular techniques were introduced that made it possible to advance knowledge in human biology using a reductionist approach. Now, the need for scientists to deal with complexity should drive a movement toward an integrationist approach to science. We propose that nutritional science is one of the best reservoirs for this approach. The American Society for Nutritional Sciences can play an important role by developing and delivering a cogent message that convinces the scientific establishment that nutrition fills this valuable niche. The society must develop a comprehensive strategy to develop our image as the reservoir for life sciences integration. Our efforts can start with our national meeting and publications, with the research initiatives for which we advocate, with our graduate training programs and with the public relations image we project for ourselves. Defining the image and future directions of nutrition as the discipline that can integrate scientific knowledge from the cell and molecule to the whole body and beyond to populations can be the most important task that our society undertakes. If we do not effectively meet this challenge, a golden opportunity will pass to others and nutritional scientists will be left to follow them. J. Nutr. 131: 1319-1321, 2001. - Abstract
The cyclotron resonance of polarons in Zn1-xMgxO/ZnO heterostructures (with 0.15 < x < 0.22) was studied by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. Low-temperature magnetoconductivity spectra of the 2D electron gas at the Zn1-xMgxO/ZnO interface determined the polaron density, mass, and scattering rate. The cyclotron mass of 2D polarons was found to increase significantly with magnetic field B from 0.24 me at B = 2 T to 0.37 me at B = 7.5 T. A nonlinear cyclotron frequency with B was also observed for 3D polarons in ZnO. The findings are discussed in the context of polaron mass renormalization driven by the electron-LO-phonon and electron-acoustic phonon interactions.

Civil function of the museum. Parisian Salons. Royal Gallery of Turin. Training of artists ,History of the arts ,NX440-632 ,1789- ,D299-475 - Abstract
The aim of this paper is to investigate the events connected with the establishment of the Reale Galleria di Torino as a public museum in 1832 in relation to the training path of its first director, Roberto d'Azeglio, who was in voluntary exile in Paris, where he came into contact with artists from the entourage of David's pupils in the 1920s. The function of the museum for d'Azeglio is the same as that identified by Quatrémere de Quincy: an institution of high civic value strongly linked to the present. Contemporary art and ancient art can thus establish a close dialogue to consolidate the ethical and civic involvement of visitors.

- Abstract

BackgroundIn the present study, by comparing the responses in wild-type mice (WT) and mice lacking (KO) the inducible (or type 2) nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), we investigated the role played by iNOS in the development of on the lung injury caused by bleomycin administration. When compared to bleomycin-treated iNOSWT mice, iNOSKO mice, which had received bleomycin, exhibited a reduced degree of the (i) lost of body weight, (ii) mortality rate, (iii) infiltration of the lung with polymorphonuclear neutrophils (MPO activity), (iv) edema formation, (v) histological evidence of lung injury, (vi) lung collagen deposition and (vii) lung Transforming Growth Factor beta1 (TGF-β1) expression.MethodsMice subjected to intratracheal administration of bleomycin developed a significant lung injury. Immunohistochemical analysis for nitrotyrosine revealed a positive staining in lungs from bleomycin-treated iNOSWT mice.ResultsThe intensity and degree of nitrotyrosine staining was markedly reduced in tissue section from bleomycin-iNOSKO mice. Treatment of iNOSWT mice with of GW274150, a novel, potent and selective inhibitor of iNOS activity (5 mg/kg i.p.) also significantly attenuated all of the above indicators of lung damage and inflammation.ConclusionTaken together, our results clearly demonstrate that iNOS plays an important role in the lung injury induced by bleomycin in the mice.
