SARS-CoV-2 is a member of the family of coronaviruses. The first cases were recorded in Wuhan, China, between December 2019 and January 2020. Italy is one of the most affected countries in Europe. COVID-19 is a new challenge in modern dentistry. New guidelines are required in dental clinics to avoid contagion caused by cross-infections. A narrative review was performed using both primary sources, such as scientific articles and secondary ones, such as bibliographic indexes, web pages, and databases. The main search engines were PubMed, SciELO, and Google Scholar. Twelve articles were selected to develop the bibliographic review by applying pre-established inclusion and exclusion criteria. Precautionary measures should be applied to control COVID-19 in clinical practice. Several authors have highlighted the importance of telephone triage and/or clinic questionnaires, body temperature measurement, usage of personal protective equipment, surface disinfection with ethanol between 62% and 71%, high-speed instruments equipped with an anti-retraction system, four-handed work, and large-volume cannulas for aspiration. Clinically, the use of a rubber dam is essential. FFP2 (or N95) and FFP3 respirators, if compared to surgical masks, provide greater protection for health workers against viral respiratory infections. Further accurate studies are needed to confirm this.

We investigated the late Quaternary throw distribution of the main normal fault that ruptured during the Mw 6.5 2016 earthquake in central Italy by means of a high-resolution structure-from-motion (SfM)-derived Digital Surface Model (DSM). We focused on a key area along the Cordone del Vettore fault (CDV), which is part of the Vettore-Bove fault system (VBFS). The CDV displays a prominent compound post-glacial scarp that allowed the reconstruction of the along-strike cumulative throw distribution. We propose a geometric approach to calculate the CDV fault throw distribution from the reconstruction of a displaced glaciation-related erosional surface, used as a geomorphic marker, and a series of closely spaced cross profiles. The proposed calculation accounts for both the slip vector direction and the degraded scarp top, including field data on fault dip angles. Following this approach, we recognized two scarps with a minimum average fault throw of ~21 m and ~35 m for this section of the investigated fault strand. The correlation with the possible post-LGM (Last Glacial Maximum) deglaciation phases of the erosional surface suggests a minimum scarp age of 25–27 ka cal BP. Such an age provides a reasonable CDV fault throw rate of ~0.8 mm/a, comparable with known long-term throw rates of the VBFS and active Apennines normal faults. By comparing the reconstructed long-term Cordone del Vettore throw distribution with the 2016 coseismic one, ~24 2016-like surface faulting events are required to generate the main cumulative scarp, under the assumption of constant slip per event. This, along with the age of the scarp, yields an average earthquake recurrence time interval of ~1100 a. These results suggest the presence of multiple regional markers that correlates with different LGM (if not pre-LGM) major glacial phases, whose erosional processes allow the preservation of pre-existing bedrock fault scarp remnants.

On 24 August 2016, a Mw 6.0 normal faulting earthquake struck central Italy, causing about 300 fatalities and heavy damage. A geological survey collected the coseismic effects observed at the surface in order to evaluate two competing hypotheses about their nature: surface faulting versus gravitational deformation. We find that the most significant geological effect is a 5.2 km-long alignment of ground ruptures along the Mt. Vettore Fault-System. These ruptures are independent from lithology, topography, morphology and change in slope and exhibit an average dip slip displacement of ~13 cm. Geometry, kinematics and dimensional properties of this zone of deformation strongly lead us to favor the primary surface faulting hypothesis that fits well the predicted estimates from experimental scaling-law relationships. Our study provides relevant hints for surface faulting in extensional domains, contributing to implement the worldwide database of the moderate earthquakes.

International audience; We integrate paleoseismic data sets along the Mt. Vettore‐Mt. Bove normal fault system rupturing at the surface in the 30 October 2016 Norcia earthquake. Through the analysis of new trenches from this work and a review of the preexisting data, we correlate events among trench sites along antithetic and synthetic fault splays. We recognize seven M 6.5, 2016 Norcia‐type (or larger) surface‐faulting events in the last ~22 kyr, including 2016. Before 2016, one event occurred in the past two millennia (260–575 CE) and possibly corresponds to the event damaging Rome in 443 or 484/508 CE. Three previous events occurred between 10590 and 415 BCE, whereas the two oldest ones date between 19820 and 16540 BCE. The average recurrence time is 3,360–3,640 years for the last ~22 kyr and 1,220–1,970 years for the last ~4 kyr. We infer a minimum dip‐slip rate of 0.26–0.38 mm/year on the master fault in the central portion of the Mt. Vettore–Mt. Bove normal fault system and a dip‐slip rate of at least 0.10 mm/year on the southernmost portion. We infer a Middle–Late Pleistocene inception of the long‐term scarp of the investigated splays. The along‐strike variation of slip rates well reproduces the trend of the 2016 surface slip; thus, the time window exposed in the trenches is representative for the present fault activity. Based on trenching data, different earthquake rupture scenarios should be also considered for local hazard assessment.

We applied a joint survey approach integrating time-domain electromagnetic soundings and single-station ambient vibration surveys in the Middle Aterno Valley (MAV), an intermontane basin in central Italy and the locus of the 2009 L'Aquila earthquake. By imaging the buried interface between the infilling deposits and the top of the pre-Quaternary bedrock, we reveal the 3-D basin geometry and gain insights into the long-term basin evolution. We reconstruct a complex subsurface architecture, characterized by three main depocenters separated by thresholds. Basin infill thickness varies from ~200-300 m in the north to more than 450 m to the southeast. Our subsurface model suggests a strong structural control on the architecture of the basin and highlights that the MAV experienced considerable modifications in its architecture over time. The buried shape of the MAV suggests a recent and still ongoing predominant tectonic control by the NW-SE trending Paganica - San Demetrio Fault System (PSDFS), which cross-cuts older ca. ENE- and NNE- trending extensional faults. Furthermore, we postulate that the present-day arrangement of the PSDFS is the result of the linkage of two previously isolated fault segments. We provide constraints on the location of the southeastern boundary of the PSDFS, defining an overall ~19 km-long fault system. This allows for earthquakes larger than M6.5. This study emphasizes the benefit of combining two easily-deployable geophysical methods for reconstructing the 3-D geometry of a tectonically-controlled basin. Our joint approach provided us with a consistent match between these two independent estimations of the basin substratum depth within 15%.

The Commission for Epilepsy Surgery of the Italian League Against Epilepsy (LICE) presents an overview of the techniques and methodologies of presurgical evaluation and of the surgical treatment of epilepsies. This overview is the result of the experience developed in the past years in the major Italian centers where programs of epilepsy surgery have been established, and it has the aim of offering a quick and easy reference tool for those involved in the treatment of patients with epilepsy. The sharing of different experiences has the additional aim of conforming and disseminating the employed techniques as well as the methods of selection and evaluation of patients. The synthetic coverage of the main issues concerning the presurgical workup and the available surgical options will hopefully provide a framework that may integrate and develop the contributions of every single center, in one of the more complex, challenging, and dynamic areas of neurological sciences.

The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate lung toxicity in 15 patients affected by metastatic melanoma of different sites, and treated with recombinant interleukin-2 (rIL-2) plus lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cells The treatment regimen included a first and a second course of rIL-2, separated by four consecutive daily leukaphereses. Autologous LAK cells were reinfused during the second course. Lung function was monitored before and after each rIL-2 administration. In the 12 patients who could be followed until completion of the therapy, spirometric parameters and transfer factor of the lungs for carbon monoxide (TLCO) decreased significantly during the first rIL-2 course, remained stable during leukapheresis, and declined significantly further during the second rIL-2 course. In the second phase, chest radiography documented some degree of pulmonary oedema, ranging from interstitial oedema to frank pulmonary oedema. A significant dose-dependent correlation was found between the cumulative rIL-2 dose and the decline in TLCO in the first course of therapy. Moreover, patients who developed symptomatic respiratory insufficiency (World Health Organisation grade III or IV) during the second course of therapy received a higher number of LAK cells than those who did not. The data support the hypothesis that LAK cells have an additional toxic effect on the lung.

UNLABELLED: Our goal in this study was to elucidate the mechanisms by which methotrexate radiosensitizes HER2-positive human breast cancer cells to the Auger electron emitter (111)In-trastuzumab modified with nuclear-localization sequence peptides ((111)In-NLS-trastuzumab) and to compare these mechanisms with the potential sensitizing effects of paclitaxel and doxorubicin when combined with this radiopharmaceutical. METHODS: Experiments were performed in MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells, their HER2-transfected subclones (231-H2N), and 2 trastuzumab-resistant variants (trastuzumab-resistant-1 and -2 [TrR1 and TrR2]). Effects of coexposure of these cells to (111)In-NLS-trastuzumab and low-dose, radiosensitizing methotrexate, paclitaxel, or doxorubicin were assessed by clonogenic cell-survival assay. Quantification of residual DNA damage was measured by the gammaH2AX-immunofluorescence assay, and cell cycle distribution was measured by fluorescence-activated cell sorting analysis. The radiation-enhancement ratio was calculated as the ratio of the surviving fraction (SF) of cells treated with (111)In-NLS-trastuzumab alone to that of cells treated concurrently with (111)In-NLS-trastuzumab and methotrexate, paclitaxel, or doxorubicin. RESULTS: A reduction in the SF in HER2-positive 231-H2N (55.7% +/- 1.3%) and TrR1 (62.6% +/- 6.5%) cells was demonstrated after exposure to (111)In-NLS-trastuzumab (approximately 0.2 MBq/microg, 100 nmol/L) but not in MDA-MB-231 or TrR2 cells expressing low levels of HER2 (SF > 90%, P > 0.05). Coadministration of methotrexate, paclitaxel, or doxorubicin enhanced the cytotoxicity of (111)In-NLS-trastuzumab toward 231-H2N and TrR1 cells but not toward MDA-MB-231 or TrR2 cells. The radiation-enhancement ratios for methotrexate, paclitaxel, and doxorubicin for 231-H2N or TrR1 cells were 2.0-2.2, 1.6-1.8, and 2.7-2.8, respectively. Methotrexate or doxorubicin combined with (111)In-NLS-trastuzumab, compared to treatment with (111)In-NLS-trastuzumab alone, significantly increased residual gammaH2AX foci in 231-H2N and TrR1 cells but not in MDA-MB-231 or TrR2 cells or in any cell line treated concurrently with paclitaxel and (111)In-NLS-trastuzumab. Cells exposed to low-dose methotrexate accumulated in the G(1)/S phase of the cell cycle, whereas low-dose paclitaxel or doxorubicin caused cells to arrest in the G(2)/M phase. CONCLUSION: Low-dose methotrexate, paclitaxel, or doxorubicin potently sensitized HER2-overexpressing human breast cancer cells, with and without acquired trastuzumab-resistance, to the Auger electron emissions from (111)In-NLS-trastuzumab through cell cycle distribution changes and in part through the inhibitory effects of these agents on DNA damage repair.

Nasogastric intubation has become a frequently used method for alleviating gastrointestinal symptoms. Necrosis from alar pressure during prolonged nasogastric and nasotracheal intubation is common, and can result in considerable deformity if it is unrecognized. The reconstruction of full-thickness alar wounds often requires multiple challenging surgical procedures. Difficult full-thickness alar defects often require nasal mucosal replacement for lining, cartilage batten graft support for the preservation of nasal function, and skin coverage for the restoration of an aesthetically correct appearance. Free composite conchal grafting can offer a single-staged, one-step repair of difficult full-thickness alar wounds that are no larger than 1.5 cm in size. A thorough explanation of the graft design and execution is presented, as well as a case report and literature review. Free composite con-chal grafting can produce aesthetic and functional results that rival the most sophisticated flap reconstructions of the lateral ala.

Chestnut, as multipurpose tree species, is, among forest trees, a non classical model for population, evolutionary and ecological genomic studies. Because of its different domestication levels, it has undergone to both natural and artificial selection pressure which have shaped its present genetic and phenotypic variation. For this reason, understanding the genetic basis of its adaptive variation needs, necessarily, an integration of different disciplines and methods in order to develop appropriate strategies for conservation and utilization of its genetic resources for both ecological and economic purposes. During the last decades, traditional methods such as provenance tests and screening of molecular genetic markers have been used separately to study and measure adaptive genetic diversity in European chestnut. Recently, new approaches have been developed that combine the use of functional and neutral markers to define the genetic mechanisms of variation at landscape level. In the present paper, an overview of traditional and new approaches, used to study genetic and adaptive variation in Castanea sativa, are reported.

Enterococcus faecalis 226 NWC, isolated from natural whey cultures utilized as starter in water-buffalo Mozzarella cheese manufacture, produces a bacteriocin, designated Enterocin 226 NWC, which is inhibitory to Listeria monocytogenes. Plasmid analysis of E. faecalis 226 NWC showed a single 5.2-kb plasmid, pEF226. In conjugation experiments, pEF226 was transferred into a plasmid-free strain of E. faecalis JH2-2. The transfer required direct cell-to-cell contact and was not inhibited by DNase. The identity of conjugation was confirmed by digestion with SmaI restriction endonuclease and subsequent pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) of the genomic DNA of E. faecalis 226, E. faecalis JH2-2 and of the isolates after the mating. The data indicate that the ability of E. faecalis 226 NWC to produce the bacteriocin is linked to the 5.2-kb conjugative plasmid pEF226.

The combination of mediastinal radiotherapy (RT) and polychemotherapy (CT) regimens can produce late toxic pulmonary and cardiac effects which often remain at the subclinical level. The aim of the present study was to investigate the cardiopulmonary response to exercise in this kind of patient. Therefore, 126 patients suffering from Hodgkin's disease were investigated after a follow-up of at least 5 years from the completion of the combined treatment. Sixty-two patients had been submitted to ABVD (doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine, dacarbazine)-RT, 40 to ABVD-MOPP (mechloretamine, vincristine, procarbazine, prednisone)-RT and 24 to VEBEP (vincristine, epidoxorubicin, bleomycin, cyclophosphamide, etoposide, prednisone)-RT. The patients were divided into three groups on the basis of respiratory function: group 1 (67 patients), normal spirometry and lung transfer function for carbon monoxide (DLCO); group 2 (52 patients), normal spirometry and DLCO less than 80% of predicted; and group 3 (7 patients), total lung capacity and DLCO less than 80% of predicted. The patients were submitted to respiratory function evaluation and 2D-echocardiography before exercise, and to the determination of cardiac output by the acetylene rebreathing method before and during symptom-limited exercise on a cycloergometer using an incremental protocol. The patients of group 3 and to a lesser extent the patients of group 2 showed, in comparison to patients of group 1, a lower tolerance to exercise, a lower oxygen consumption, a higher respiratory rate, a lower O2 pulse and a lower cardiac output per oxygen uptake. These data indicated an abnormal exercise physiology in the patients with persistent pulmonary impairment, especially when the reduction of DLCO was associated with a decrease of total lung capacity. The lower exercise capacity seems to be due to a combination of decreased cardiac performance and an impairment of gas diffusion capacity.

The adrenal gland is a well-demonstrated source for different neurotrophic factors. The presence of the beta-nerve growth factor (beta-NGF) mRNA in the adrenal tissue used for grafting in a Parkinsonian patient is reported here. Adrenal samples were obtained on the day of implantation, and a specific cDNA was synthesized after the extraction of total RNA using a synthetic oligonucleotide as a reverse transcription primer. A 168-bp portion of the cDNA was amplified using two other oligonucleotides as Taq polymerase primers in a polymerase chain reaction. Thirty-two cycles of amplification were performed. The amplification products were identified by agarose gel electrophoresis and Southern blot analysis as a single DNA band hybridizing with a third beta-NGF specific oligonucleotide. The identity of the fragment was confirmed by DNA sequencing. Quantitative analysis demonstrated a beta-NGF mRNA concentration exceeding 5 fg/micrograms of total adrenal RNA. These findings add NGF to the other neurotrophic factors produced by the gland (i.e., basic fibroblast growth factor) and demonstrate the retained functional capacity of the Parkinsonian adrenal to express the beta-NGF mRNA. All these data may assume relevant meaning for neurotransplantation research.

Over the past few years, treatment of burn scars with lipofilling has shown encouraging clinical results in terms of texture, color, softness, and quality of skin patterns. This clinical application has been widened to include treatment for scars resulting from surgical correction of cicatricial ectropion. In fact, although standard surgery with flaps and skin grafts can grant significant functional and cosmetic improvements, these often are not complete because of secondary surgical scars. The case of a 43-year-old man with cicatricial outcomes from chemical burns and subsequent surgical repair of medial ectropion in the lower eyelid is reported. The scar area was treated with injection of adipose tissue harvested from abdominal subcutaneous fat and processed according to Coleman’s technique. At the 1-year follow-up assessment after lipostructure, the patient no longer reported xeroftalmia and epiphora. He had experienced complete functional recovery with excellent cosmetic results. Lipostructure of cicatricial ectropion seems to complete and improve the results of the standard surgical approach, and its long-lasting benefits are in keeping with the theoretical basis of this procedure.

Summary - Natural whey cultures, a thermophilic multiple strain starter (Lactobacillus helveticus and Streptococcus thermophilus) and a more complex multiple strain starter, including both thermophilic and mesophilic bacteria and a yeast (L delbrueckii subsp lactis, S thermophilus, Lactococcus lactis subsp lactis, Lactoc lactis subsp diacetylactis, Enterococcus faecalis, Leuconostoc mesenteroides subsp dextranicum and Kluyveromyces marxianus) and artificial acidification (addition of citric acid) were used for the manufacture of water-buffalo Mozzarella cheese. Whey acidity, fermentation end-products and microbial populations were monitored during cheese manufacture. A scorecard for sensory evaluation of water-buffalo Mozzarella cheese was developed and used to compare the cheeses obtained with the difterent procedures. The traditional technology (raw milk and natural whey cultures) allowed shorter manufacturing times due to faster acid production du ring ripening. Cheeses produced with the thermophilic multiple strain starter and citric acid addition obtained the lowest scores in sensory evaluation. When the complex multiple strain starter was used scores were slightly higher and more constant than !hose obtained using traditional technology.

The effect of different incubation conditions for a multiple strain starter developed for Mozzarella cheese manufacture from water-buffalo milk was studied. The original starter was prepared by mixing intermediate cultures of the different strains grown separately and was composed by mesophilic (Streptococcus lactis subsp. lactis 25%, Str. lactis subsp. diacetyiactis 25%, Str. faecalis subsp. faecalis 7%, Leuconostoc mesenteroides 8%, Kluyveromyces marxianus 0.02%) and thermophilic (Str. salivarius subsp. thermophilus 20% and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. lactis 15%) strains. To facilitate the production of the starter preparation for cheesemaking the mesophilic strains were grown together at 22°C, 30°C or 37°C and the thermophilic strains were grown together at 37°C, 40°C or 45°C. The best results in terms of acid production and species composition were obtained when the thermophilic species were incubated at 37°C and the mesophilic species at 22°C or 30°C. The effect of the inoculation level (2, 5 or 10%) on acid production was also tested for some combinations.

Human Equilibrative Nucleoside Transporter 1 (hENT1) is an integral membrane protein that transports nucleosides and analog drugs across cellular membranes. Very little is known about intracellular processing and localization of hENT1. Here we show that disruption of a highly conserved triplet (PWN) near the N-terminus, or the last eight C-terminal residues (two hydrophobic triplets separated by a positive arginine) result in loss of plasma membrane localization and/or transport function. To understand the role of specific residues within these regions, we studied the localization patterns of N- or C-terminal deletion and/or substitution mutants of GFP-hENT1 using confocal microscopy. Quantification of GFP-hENT1 (mutant and wildtype) protein at the plasma membrane was conducted using nitrobenzylthioinosine (NBTI) binding. Functionality of the GFP-hENT1 mutants was determined by heterologous expression in Xenopus laevis oocytes followed by measurement of uridine uptake. Mutation of the proline within the PWN motif disrupts plasma membrane localization. C-terminal mutations (primarily within the hydrophobic triplets) lead to hENT1 retention within the cell (e.g. in the ER). Some mutants still localize to the plasma membrane but show reduced transport activity. These data suggest that these two regions contribute to the structural integrity and thus correct processing and function of hENT1.

As a further contribution to the systematics of species belonging to the genus Crassostrea, electrophoretic studies of gene-enzyme system have been carried out on five populations of oysters regarded as either Crassostrea gigas or Crassostrea angulata species. Two populations of C. gigas from Japan (Karakawa and Hiroshima), one of C. gigas from France (Fouras), one of C. angulata from Portugal (Sado) and one of Crassostrea sp. from Italy (Chioggia) have been examined. The electrophoretic study of 20 enzyme loci and the genetic distance value showed no significant genetic divergence among the Crassostrea sp. populations. Thus the results of this study seem to confirm and extend to other populations what obtained by Buroker et al. (1979), that is a remarkable genetical identity between the two species Crassostrea gigas and Crassostrea angulata.

This earthquake highlighted the incomplete understanding of the geology of the area, in particular the Quaternary continental deposits and active tectonics, which caused the Paganica fault system to be ignored by researchers.The map, utilizing airborne LiDAR analysis and traditional field survey approaches, is the first example in Italy (and one of the few in Europe) that integrates high-resolution topography in active tectonic studies. With unprecedented detail and precision on the spatial distribution of deposits, the map of the geomorphic and tectonic features provides new insight for the reconstruction of the Quaternary basin evolution and estimation of long-term deformation rates for the the Paganica fault system. Detailed fault mapping of Quaternary deposits represents an essential input for seismic hazard assessment and surface faulting hazard evaluation.

BACKGROUND Tuberous breasts are widely known and described. Several surgical strategies have been proposed; however, few studies explain the origin or structural alterations of this deformity. No histological studies have been performed. The present article describes a morphological and histological study of breast tissue specimens. METHODS Mammary specimens of 22 female and five male patients with tuberous breasts were histologically analyzed and compared with six specimens harvested from normal female breasts and from three cases of true ‘normal’ gynecomastia. RESULTS A high prevalence of one histological subtype was observed, with the presence of collagen fibres among few fibroblasts. Histochemical analysis highlighted alterations of the arrangement and of the quantity of collagen involving breast structures. CONCLUSIONS Results of the present study suggest that collagen deposition alterations can better explain breast parenchyma modifications. Histological features of male subjects support this theory. Additionally, the observation of two cases in male homozygous twins suggests the role of genetic influences.

With unprecedented detail and precision on the spatial distribution of deposits, the map of the geomorphic and tectonic features provides new insight for the reconstruction of the Quaternary basin evolution and estimation of long-term deformation rates for the the Paganica fault system. Detailed fault mapping of Quaternary deposits represents an essential input for seismic hazard assessment and surface faulting hazard evaluation.

Based on our previous Phase I study indicating good tolerability of the drug, we have evaluated therapeutic activity and acute and subacute toxicities associated with repeated courses of the new anthracycline 4'-iodo-4'-deoxydoxorubicin (I-Dox) at the maximum tolerated dose (80 mg/m2) every three weeks. Thirty-three patients (31 evaluated for activity and 32 for toxicity) with relapsed (11 cases) or advanced breast cancer at presentation (22 cases) were treated with 108 cycles (median 3, range 1-7) for a median cumulative dose of 240 mg/m2. We observed no complete and 11 (35%) partial responses. Minor response was documented in 5 additional patients. The most frequent and severe toxicity was hematological. In 47% of the cycles and 34% of the patients I-Dox administration was associated with WHO grade 4 neutropenia. Severe neutropenia was more frequent after repeated cycles. Similar cumulative toxicity was observed for thrombocytopenia and anemia. In three patients (7 cycles) fever and possible infection occurred during neutropenia and required oral antibiotics. Extra-hematological side-effects were limited to mild/moderate nausea lasting for a few hours and mild fatigue lasting 1-7 days. Alopecia or oral mucositis were minimal or absent in the majority of patients. One case of potential reversible cardiac toxicity was observed after 240 mg/m2 I-Dox in a patient with preexistent cardiac risk factors. In view of the reported activity, good general tolerability, and selective hematological toxicity, I-Dox should be evaluated at higher than the conventionally defined maximum tolerated dose in combination with recombinant human hemopoietic growth factors.

Medium-sized Adriatic-Ionian cities are becoming increasingly fragmented and fragile, as a result of a natural decline in population, aging and migration, the latter contributing also to a loss of skills. Environmental impacts of protracted anthropogenic activities increase the risk of poverty of these territories, affecting human health and increasing the probabilities of disasters from extreme weather events, such as flooding or the typical fires in Mediterranean ecosystems. The restorative design research offers a viable approach to ecologically responsive, environmentally responsible, and socially inclusive regeneration policies and practices, where integrated and comprehensive restoration is targeted and achieved through systematic and incremental climate adaptation strategies for urban, peri-urban, and rural areas. The proposed contribution explores the overlapping layers of fragility of a case study of the Adriatic-Ionian Euroregion, whose claims are supported empirically through an integrated analysis providing evidence and perspectives. The case study presented is about the Marine Protected Area ‘Torre del Cerrano’ (IT) – co-founder of AdriaPAN, the Adriatic Protected Areas Network, and member of AdrIonPAN, a more extensive and inclusive network of protected areas from the Adriatic and Ionian regions – which plays an effective role in the territorial cohesion promoting bottom-up initiatives (e.g. the Cerrano River Contract) through the Green Blue Infrastructure approach. The research focuses on the role played by the ‘Torre del Cerrano’ in developing strategies through nature-based technologies and solutions, and on the proactive contribution of the people animating these fragile territories in their capacity to be the union trait within the ecosystems fragmentation. People’s fluxes and appropriate technologies are jointly analysed, assuming their integrated restorative critical role supporting the regeneration of fragile territories and medium-sized urban centres ensuring that healthier and thriving life exists on the Adriatic-Ionian Region for the foreseeable future.

Cyberbullying should also be considered as a cause for new onset psychological symptoms, somatic symptoms of unclear etiology or a drop in academic performance. Pediatricians should be trained to play a major role in caring for and supporting the social and developmental well-being of children.

The synthesis of segmented polyethers (PO) contg. oxadiazole units was carried out in a two-step scheme involving condensation reaction of acid chlorides with diphenoxyalkane dihydrazides; the polyazides were subsequently subjected to cyclization to form the oxadiazole moieties, in the presence of POCl3. Because of the anisotropic shape of oxadiazole-conjugated segments, the copolymers of the series show the monotropic nematic phase to be somewhat different from that obsd. in the case of the low mol. wt. analogous compds. In that case, high ordered liq. cryst. smectic phases are reported while the nematic phase is obsd. just in few cases. According to previous reports on oxadiazole-contg. materials, the POs show high photoluminescence activity in the blue region of the visible spectra. The good soly. in chlorinate solvents allows prepn. of films with homogeneous thickness by spin coating. The glass transition temp. is 100-120„a, which ensures good stability of film morphol. at room temp. For these features, the POs are potential candidate materials for fabrication of blue-light-emitting devices.

Beef chops were stored at 4°C under different conditions: in air (A), modified-atmosphere packaging (MAP), vacuum packaging (V), or bacteriocin-activated antimicrobial packaging (AV). After 0 to 45 days of storage, analyses were performed to determine loads of spoilage microorganisms, microbial metabolites (by solid-phase microextraction [SPME]-gas chromatography [GC]-mass spectrometry [MS] and proton nuclear magnetic resonance [ 1 H NMR]), and microbial diversity (by PCR–denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis [DGGE] and pyrosequencing). The microbiological shelf life of meat increased with increasing selectivity of storage conditions. Culture-independent analysis by pyrosequencing of DNA extracted directly from meat showed that Brochothrix thermosphacta dominated during the early stages of storage in A and MAP, while Pseudomonas spp. took over during further storage in A. Many different bacteria, several of which are usually associated with soil rather than meat, were identified in V and AV; however, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) dominated during the late phases of storage, and Carnobacterium divergens was the most frequent microorganism in AV. Among the volatile metabolites, butanoic acid was associated with the growth of LAB under V and AV storage conditions, while acetoin was related to the other spoilage microbial groups and storage conditions. 1 H NMR analysis showed that storage in air was associated with decreases in lactate, glycogen, IMP, and ADP levels and with selective increases in levels of 3-methylindole, betaine, creatine, and other amino acids. The meat microbiota is significantly affected by storage conditions, and its changes during storage determine complex shifts in the metabolites produced, with a potential impact on meat quality.

Silicon-based nanostructured thin films have been obtained through laser irradiation of amorphous silicon oxides. The optoelectronic properties of nanostructured films largely differ from their amorphous counterpart, exhibiting optical gap narrowing, wavelength-dependent spectral modification of the photoluminescence (PL) and conduction mechanism variations. In particular, following the hydrogen effusion and related defect density increase, a spectral red shift and PL intensity quenching is detected for λ exc =514.5 nm, whereas PL enhancement and spectral blue shift is observed at λ exc =632.8 nm. Different thermal activation regimes of conductivity are also detected by conductivity measurements. Such results are discussed in terms of microstructural changes from an hydrogenated amorphous network to a nanostructured two-phase material where wavelength-selective excitation of radiative recombination channels and temperature-dependent conductivity paths occurs.
