Introduction Human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) are genetic elements resulting from ancestral infection of germline cells. HERVs have been associated with multiple complex disorders, including neurodevelopment disorders, namely autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Objectives In this review, we aim to explore the relationship between endogenous retroviruses and autism spectrum disorder. Methods A non-systematic review of literature published in the Pubmed database in the last ten years was performed. A combination of the search terms “autism spectrum disorder”, “ASD”, “endogenous retrovirus”, “human endogenous retrovirus”, “ERV” and “HERV” was used. Articles were selected based on title and abstract review. Results Preclinical and human studies suggest that the abnormal expression of endogenous retroviruses can represent a biological trait of neurodevelopment disorders in affected individuals and their parents. The precise epigenetic processes that underpin this relationship remain elusive. Nonetheless, HERVs play various roles, modulate host immune response and may affect human embryogenesis. All of these factors can participate in the interplay among genetic vulnerability, environmental risk factors, and maternal immune activation that contribute for the development of ASD. Conclusions There is a recent, mounting body of evidence linking HERVs and ASD. Whether HERVs behave as a cofactor for the development of ASD or an epiphenomenon of neurodevelopmental disorders remains unclear. Further research is needed to assess if there is causality and evaluate the potential for HERVs to serve as biomarkers for ASD. Disclosure of Interest None Declared

Introduction Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by frequent comorbidity including mood, anxiety and psychotic disorders. Psychiatric comorbidity in ASD has been associated with poor prognosis. Objectives To summarize clinical data regarding the relationship between autism spectrum disorder and psychosis comorbidity, namely its epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. Methods We conducted a non-systematic review of the literature relevant to the topic published in the PubMed database. Articles were selected based on title and abstract review. Results Epidemiological studies report significant rates of comorbidity between ASD and psychosis. According to a recent systematic review, prevalence of non-affective psychosis in ASD has been estimated at 9,56%, despite heterogeneity across included studies. The differential diagnosis of psychosis in a patient with ASD is frequently a challenge and depends on the severity of intellectual and language impairment, medical comorbidities (including epilepsy and associated pharmacological iatrogenic factors), psychiatric comorbidities and substance use. Conversely, establishing the diagnosis of ASD in a patient presenting with psychosis is not always clear, and clinicians must rely on collecting a detailed developmental history. There are no large controlled studies regarding the treatment of psychosis in this specific patient group, but risperidone and aripiprazole have been used based on efficacy in primary psychotic disorders, as well as efficacy and safety profile in other symptomatic clusters of ASD, namely irritability. ASD and psychosis comorbidity has been associated with lower response rates to antipsychotic treatment and negative long-term prognosis. Conclusions Psychosis is a common and serious comorbidity of ASD, with limited data regarding treatment options. Further research is needed to improve global outcomes. RESUMO: A Esclerose Lateral Amiotrófica (ELA) é uma doença neurodegenerativa caracterizada pela perda progressiva da função motora e da capacidade respiratória, cuja mortalidade se deve fundamentalmente à repercussão respiratória, sendo mais comum nos homens do que nas mulheres. Sendo uma doença altamente incapacitante, provoca no doente vários graus de dependência nas suas actividades da vida diária (mobilização, cuidados de higiene, alimentação).Pretendeuse com este estudo caracterizar social e economicamente os doentes com ELA seguidos na consulta de Pneumologia e Doenças Neuromusculares no Hospital de S. João - Porto, bem como a sua incapacidade física, acessibilidades da habitação e suporte familiar.A população do nosso estudo foi constituída por 19 doentes, sendo a maioria do sexo masculino, casada, com idade média de 56,4 anos, com profissões semi-qualificadas e todos tinham suporte familiar.As barreiras arquitectónicas existentes na acessibilidade da habitação destes doentes são um factor de dificuldade, existindo mesmo situações de mudança ou alteração da habitação.Neste tipo de doentes a família tem um papel muito importante, quer ao nível do tratamento quer ao nível do ajuste pessoal do doente à sua situação de incapacidade. Moreover it is a disease inducing several dependence degrees including mobilization, hygiene cares, feeding.The aim of our study was to characterize social and economically patient with ALS in the outpatient department of Hospital de S. João â Porto. We also evaluated their physical incapacity, accessibilities of the house and family support.Our population included 19 patients, predominantely married male, with a medium age of 56,4 years, with semi-qualified professions and all with some family support. Architectonic barriers in the patient´s houses are a hindrance factor, with some patients being forced to move or radically change it.In this type of patients the family has a very important role, at the treatment level as well as at the level of the personal adjustment of the patient to your situation of incapacity. Alphitobius diaperinus, conhecido como cascudinho, é encontrado abundantemente nas instalações avícolas, e acarreta prejuízos zootécnicos e sanitários na avicultura industrial mundialmente. As formas de controle deste besouro estão baseadas exclusivamente no uso de inseticidas para os quais já existem vários relatos de populações resistentes forçando o emprego de métodos alternativos como o controle biológico, interferindo no ciclo de vida do inseto. Este estudo avaliou, em condições de laboratório, a mortalidade de larvas e adultos de A. diaperinus frente a diferentes temperaturas de aquecimento (45º, 50º, 55º e 60º C) e resfriamento (-10º, -13º e -18º C), na presença de maravalha (PM) e ausência de maravalha (AM), através do tempo letal de 100% dos insetos (TL100) em minutos em cada temperatura. A TL100 de larvas e adultos em 45º C foi de 36 e 38 AM e 42 e 57 PM, em 50º C foram 15 e 11 AM e 19 e 16 PM, para 55º C foi de 8 e 9 AM e 12 PM e em 60º C foi de 5 e 6 AM e 11 e 9 PM. Já em -10º C variou de 57 e 60 AM e 70 e 75 PM, em -13º C levou 52 e 55 AM e 60 e 64 PM e em -18º C levou 42 e 43 AM e 51 e 52 PM. Em todas as temperaturas avaliadas houve mortalidade dos insetos em tempo consideravelmente rápido e métodos de controle, através da temperatura, devem levar em consideração esses pontos para referência.

In the last few years, feed additives have been used in animal nutrition to improve nutrient utilization, health parameters and animal performance. However, the use of antibiotics as feed additives has allowed the occurrence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which can bring as a consequence, an increase in the morbidity and mortality of diseases that were previously treatable with antibiotics. In this context, antimicrobial peptides (AMP) have appeared as a promising strategy because they have multiple biological activities and represent a powerful strategy to prevent the development of resistant microorganisms. Despite the small number of studies applied in vivo, AMP appear as a potent alternative to the use of antibiotics in animal nutrition, due to an increase in feed efficiency and the prevention/treatment of some animal diseases. This review discusses the problems associated with antimicrobial resistance and the use of AMP as a strong candidate to replace conventional antibiotics, mainly in the animal industry.

Abstract Since the beginning of the pandemic of COVID-19, there has been a widespread assumption that most infected persons are asymptomatic. Using data from the recent wave of the EPICOVID19 study, a nationwide household-based survey including 133 cities from all states of Brazil, we estimated the proportion of people with and without antibodies for SARS-CoV-2 who were asymptomatic, which symptoms were most frequently reported, number of symptoms and the association with socio-demographic characteristics. We tested 33,205 subjects using a rapid antibody test previously validated. Information was collected before participants received the test result. Out of 849 (2.7%) participants positive for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, only 12.1% (95% CI 10.1–14.5) reported no symptoms, compared to 42.2% (95% CI 41.7–42.8) among those negative. The largest difference between the two groups was observed for changes in smell/taste (56.5% versus 9.1%, a 6.2-fold difference). Changes in smell/taste, fever and body aches were most likely to predict positive tests as suggested by recursive partitioning tree analysis. Among individuals without any of these three symptoms, only 0.8% tested positive, compared to 18.3% of those with both fever and changes in smell or taste. Most subjects with antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 are symptomatic, even though most present only mild symptoms.

Breast cancer is a multifactorial disease that have been increasing in an alarm rate worldwide, and has overweight and obesity as important risk factors, being considered a significant public health problem. The present study aimed to demonstrate the clinical and epidemiological profile of breast cancer patients diagnosed in Sinop-MT (Brazil) and analyze the prevalence of overweight and obesity in these patients. This is a descriptive study, with data collected by analysis of patient’s medical records who were diagnosed with breast carcinoma in the Department of Oncology of Santo Antônio’s Hospital. Data were tabulated and analyzed in an Excel® spreadsheet software (Office 365), with a descriptive analysis in percentage. Results demonstrated that 100% of patients were women; 85.7% were affected by ductal and/or lobular breast carcinomas; all deaths occurred in patients over 40 years and 75% of deaths occurred in advanced stages; being 68.75% of the most severe cases’ stages present in the oldest patients. Furthermore, it was observed that 37.12% of the patients were classified as overweight or obese, 88.57% were treated with chemotherapy and 91.44% treated with combined therapies. In conclusion, it was observed that a great number of breast cancer patients were overweight/obese, presented ductal and lobular carcinoma, the deaths occurred predominantly in the over forty years and were related with the presence of metastasis and advanced stage.

Objectives. To investigate socioeconomic and ethnic group inequalities in prevalence of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in the 27 federative units of Brazil. Methods. In this cross-sectional study, three household surveys were carried out on May 14-21, June 4-7, and June 21-24, 2020 in 133 Brazilian urban areas. Multi-stage sampling was used to select 250 individuals in each city to undergo a rapid antibody test. Subjects answered a questionnaire on household assets, schooling and self-reported skin color/ethnicity using the standard Brazilian classification in five categories: white, black, brown, Asian or indigenous. Principal component analyses of assets was used to classify socioeconomic position into five wealth quintiles. Poisson regression was used for the analyses. Results. 25 025 subjects were tested in the first, 31 165 in the second, and 33 207 in the third wave of the survey, with prevalence of positive results equal to 1.4%, 2.4%, and 2.9% respectively. Individuals in the poorest quintile were 2.16 times (95% confidence interval 1.86; 2.51) more likely to test positive than those in the wealthiest quintile, and those with 12 or more years of schooling had lower prevalence than subjects with less education. Indigenous individuals had 4.71 (3.65; 6.08) times higher prevalence than whites, as did those with black or brown skin color. Adjustment for region of the country reduced the prevalence ratios according to wealth, education and ethnicity, but results remained statistically significant. Conclusions. The prevalence of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in Brazil shows steep class and ethnic gradients, with lowest risks among white, educated and wealthy individuals.

Abstract Background Immunization has been held as a major achievement for global health, however, still exist many children who are not completely vaccinated. Knowledge about factors contributing to the incomplete immunization is important to develop effective strategies and interventions to achieve universal coverage to control or eradicate vaccine-preventable diseases. This study aimed to describe immunization coverage within the first year of life and associated factors with incompleteness among participants of the 2015 Pelotas Birth Cohort, Brazil. Methods Cross-sectional analyses were performed using data from a population-based cohort. Information on vaccination status was collected from immunization cards and verbal mother’s reports from 4014 children aged 24 months. Coverage was described for each vaccine, for the basic and the complete national schedule. Incomplete vaccination was defined as failure to receive the recommended number of doses by the National Immunization Program in 2015. Bivariate and multivariate Poisson regressions with robust variance were conducted to identify factors associated with incompleteness. Results Vaccine coverage of individual vaccines varied from 81% (Hepatitis A) to 97% (BCG). Full immunization coverage were 77% (95% CI: 75.8; 78.4) and 66.1% (95% CI: 64.6; 67.5), for basic and expanded indicators, relatively. Multivariate analyses showed that factors associated with incompleteness (for both basic and expanded coverage) were high family income, high parity, low number of prenatal consultations, not have done the tetanus toxoid, reduced diphtheria toxoid, and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine during pregnancy, not have breastfeed the child until at age 12 months and not have used public health care services for child’s vaccination. Conclusion Findings of our study show the need to develop and implement policies and programs to achieve complete immunization during the first year of life. Some strategies would include an increase in the primary health care services networks, improving their quality and access, the dissemination of scientific-based evidence about the benefits of vaccination, through communication campaigns and guidance provided by health professionals, especially those responsible for prenatal care.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To describe the evolution of seropositivity in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, through 10 consecutive surveys conducted between April 2020 and April 2021. METHODS Nine cities covering all regions of the State were studied, 500 households in each city. One resident in each household was randomly selected for testing. In survey rounds 1–8 we used the rapid WONDFO SARS-CoV-2 Antibody Test (Wondfo Biotech Co., Guangzhou, China). In rounds 9–10, we used a direct ELISA test that identifies IgG to the viral S protein (S-UFRJ). In terms of social distancing, individuals were asked three questions, from which we generated an exposure score using principal components analysis. RESULTS Antibody prevalence in early April 2020 was 0.07%, increasing to 10.0% in February 2021, and to 18.2% in April 2021. In round 10, self-reported whites showed the lowest seroprevalence (17.3%), while indigenous individuals presented the highest (44.4%). Seropositivity increased by 40% when comparing the most with the least exposed. CONCLUSIONS The proportion of the population already infected by SARS-Cov-2 in the state is still far from any perspective of herd immunity and the infection affects population groups in very different levels.

Background: Knowledge about COVID-19 in pregnancy is limited, and evidence on the impact of the infection during pregnancy and postpartum is still emerging. Aim: To analyze maternal morbidity and mortality due to severe acute respiratory infections (SARI), including COVID-19, in Brazil. Methods: National surveillance data from the SIVEP-Gripe (Sistema de Informação de Vigilância Epidemiológica da Gripe) was used to describe currently and recently pregnant women aged 10-49 years hospitalized for SARI from January through November, 2020. SARI cases were grouped into: COVID-19; influenza or other detected agent SARI; and SARI of unknown etiology. Characteristics, symptoms and outcomes were presented by SARI type and region. Binomial proportion and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) for outcomes were obtained using the Clopper-Pearson method. Results: Of 945,460 SARI cases in the SIVEP-Gripe, we selected 11,074 women aged 10–49 who were pregnant (7964) or recently pregnant (3110). COVID-19 was confirmed in 49.4% cases; 1.7% had influenza or another etiological agent; and 48.9% had SARI of unknown etiology. The pardo race/ethnic group accounted for 50% of SARI cases. Hypertension/Other cardiovascular diseases, chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes, and obesity were the most common comorbidities. A total of 362 women with COVID-19 (6.6%; 95%CI 6.0–7.3) died. Mortality was 4.7% (2.2–8.8) among influenza patients, and 3.3% (2.9–3.8) among those with SARI of unknown etiology. The South-East, Northeast and North regions recorded the highest frequencies of mortality among COVID-19 patients. Conclusion: Mortality among pregnant and recently pregnant women with SARIs was elevated among those with COVID-19, particularly in regions where maternal mortality is already high.

Abstract The use of more than one control technique can maximize the reduction of the damages caused by the fungus Asperisporium caricae causal agent of the black spot in the papaya crop. The objective of this work was to evaluate the sensitivity of the fungi Hansfordia pulvinata and Acremonium spp. to alternative products with potential for use in the control of the black-spotted ptarmigan. Three isolates of Acremonium spp. (A-598, A-602 and A-617) and an isolate of H. pulvinata (H-611) were grown in BDA medium containing Agro-Mos®, Bion®, Ecolife®, Hortifospk®, Matriz G®, Vitaphol® separately. The Amistar 500WG ® fungicide was used as a positive control and pure BDA as a negative control. The toxicity of the tested products was determined based on the values of the biological index, derived from the means of mycelial growth, sporulation and germination of conidia, in each experimental unit. In this way it was possible to select the products classified as compatible for all isolates, and to test them in vivo. In the greenhouse, only the isolates and isolates with selected products, were applied in papaya plants with foliar symptoms of black-spotted. The incidence of leaves with hyperparasites and the percentage of black-painted lesions colonized by the tested isolates were evaluated. Thus, the H-611 isolate proved to be compatible with most of the alternative products tested, except with Hortifos®. Bion® and Matrix® products were compatible with all tested isolates and could be used in conjunction with Acremonium spp. and H. pulvinata to control the papaya black spot, since these products did not present toxicity on the hyperparasitic fungi.

Objective. Effective and low-cost interventions for preventing the vertical transmission of syphilis can substantially reduce mortality and morbidity related to maternal and congenital syphilis. This study aims to identify successes and problems in eliminating congenital syphilis in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Methods. Conducted in 2015, this multicountry study included qualitative data from focal point staff members of the Pan American Health Organization, as well as country information and answers to semiqualitative questions on the elimination of congenital syphilis. Additional information was obtained from five Caribbean countries and Panama. Results. Few of the studied LAC countries use a rapid syphilis test, but most of them do have benzathine penicillin available in primary care facilities. The majority of the countries have national strategies and protocols for eliminating congenital syphilis. There were substantial differences among the national information systems, including with data collection, analysis, and quality control. The major challenges related to eliminating congenital syphilis are the need to improve: prenatal care; test coverage; health worker training about syphilis diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up; and access to institutional deliveries. Other problems include a lack of rapid tests; shortages of benzathine penicillin; and substandard laboratory quality. Poor follow-up of maternal syphilis cases and their sexual contacts was also reported. Conclusions. Most of the LAC countries studied have national strategic plans and protocols and have advanced in the elimination of congenital syphilis. These countries must keep improving their capacity to collect high-quality data about coverage and inequities and use this data as a basis for decision-making. To accelerate the elimination of congenital syphilis, the good practices and actions that have been undertaken must be reinforced.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To estimate the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies and the adherence to measures of social distancing in children and adolescents studied in three national surveys conducted in Brazil between May–June 2020. METHODS Three national serological surveys were conducted in 133 sentinel cities located in all 27 Federative Units. Multistage probability sampling was used to select 250 individuals per city. The total sample size in age ranges 0–9 and 10–19 years old are of 4,263 and 8,024 individuals, respectively. Information on children or adolescents was gathered with a data collection app, and a rapid point-of-case test for SARS-CoV-2 was conducted on a finger prick blood sample. RESULTS The adjusted prevalence of antibodies was 2.9% (2.2–3.6) among children 0–9 years, 2.2% (1.8–2.6) among adolescents 10-19 years, and 3.0% (2.7–3.3) among adults 20+years. Prevalence of antibodies was higher among poor children and adolescents compared to those of rich families. Adherence to social distancing measures was seen in 72.4% (71.9–73.8) of families with children, 60.8% (59.6–61.9) for adolescents, and 57.4% (56.9–57.8) for adults. For not leaving the house except for essential matters the proportions were 81.7% (80.5–82.9), 70.6% (69.6–61.9), and 65.1% (64.7–65.5), respectively. Among children and adolescents, social distancing was strongly associated with socioeconomic status, being much higher in the better-off families. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 showed comparable levels among children, adolescents, and adults. Adherence to social distancing measures was more prevalent in children, followed by adolescents. There were important socioeconomic differences in the adherence to social distancing among children and adolescents.

Cervical cancer, which main etiologic factor is Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection, continues to be a burden for public health systems in developing countries. Our laboratory has been working with the hypothesis that signals generated in the tumor microenvironment can modulate local and systemic immune responses. In this context, it would be reasonable to think that tumors create pro-tumoral bias in immune cells, even before they are recruited to the tumor microenvironment. To understand if and how signaling started in the tumor microenvironment can influence cells within the tumor and systemically, we investigated the expression of key proteins in signaling pathways important for cell proliferation, viability, immune responses and tolerance. Besides, we used detection of specific phosphorylated residues, which are indicative of activation for Akt, CREB, p65 NFκB, and STAT3. Our findings included the observation of a significant STAT3 expression increase and p65 NFκB decrease in circulating leukocytes in correlation with lesion grade. In light of those observations, we started investigating the result of the inhibition of STAT3 in a tumor experimental model. STAT3 inhibition impaired tumor growth, increased anti-tumor T cell responses and decreased the accumulation of myeloid cells in the spleen. The concomitant inhibition of NFκB partially reversed these effects. This study indicates that STAT3 and NFκB are involved in immunomodulatory tumor effects and STAT3 inhibition could be considered as therapy for patients with cervical cancer.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To describe social distancing practices in nine municipalities of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, stratified by gender, age, and educational attainment. METHODS Two sequential cross-sectional studies were conducted in the municipalities of Canoas, Caxias do Sul, Ijuí, Passo Fundo, Pelotas, Porto Alegre, Santa Cruz do Sul, Santa Maria, and Uruguaiana to estimate the population prevalence of COVID-19. The study was designed to be representative of the urban population of these municipalities. A questionnaire including three questions about social distancing was also administered to the participants. Here, we present descriptive analyses of social distancing practices by subgroups and use chi-square tests for comparisons. RESULTS In terms of degree of social distancing, 25.8% of the interviewees reported being essentially isolated and 41.1% reported being quite isolated. 20.1% of respondents reported staying at home all the time, while 44.5% left only for essential activities. More than half of households reported receiving no visits from non-residents. Adults aged 20 to 59 reported the least social distancing, while more than 80% of participants aged 60 years or older reported being essentially isolated or quite isolated. Women reported more stringent distancing than men. Groups with higher educational attainment reported going out for daily activities more frequently. CONCLUSIONS The extremes of age are more protected by social distancing, but some groups remain highly exposed. This can be an important limiting factor in controlling progression of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In cellular systems, information signals must be transmitted at high rates and with high reliability. One of the possible solutions to meet such criteria is the use of systems with multiple transmitting and/or receiving antenna arranged in the form of a multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) system. However, signal processing techniques in MIMO systems are developed under the assumption of transmission on Gaussian channels, which may lead to the decrease of efficiency in non-Gaussian communication scenarios. In this context, the widespread use of MIMO systems in recent years has motivated the development of new processing techniques that can be employed in scenarios that also consider the presence of non-Gaussian noise in communication channels. This work proposes a novel signal detection technique for MIMO systems, which is called maximum correntropy detector (MCD), being adequate to environments characterized by Gaussian and non-Gaussian noise. The introduced approach is based on complex correntropy function and can be seen as a generalization of the maximum likelihood detector (MLD) concept. The MCD is evaluated on Gaussian and non-Gaussian channels, where superior performance is achieved when compared with the classic detectors, without significant increase of the computational complexity.

Objectives. To identify evidence that income, education, or ethnicity might be associated with low birthweight, small-for-gestational-age birth, or preterm birth. Methods. A systematic review was conducted using searches in two online databases, PubMed and Literature in the Health Sciences in Latin America and the Caribbean (LILACS). The searches covered materials published between 1 January 1982 and 5 May 2016. The search terms used were (“infant, premature” OR “infant, small for gestational age” OR “fetal growth retardation”) AND (“socioeconomic ­factors” OR “ethnic groups” OR “maternal age”). Results. A total of 3 070 references that met the initial selection criteria were analyzed, and 157 relevant studies were fully read. We located 18 studies that investigated associations of family or maternal income, education, or ethnicity with low birthweight, small-for-­gestational-age birth, or preterm birth. Of the 18, 10 of them involved high-income countries, and 8 dealt with middle- or low-income countries. Greater evidence was found for an association between ethnicity and the three outcomes studied, particularly for prematurity among children of black mothers. There was little evidence for an association between maternal/family income or education and any of the three outcomes. Conclusions. Income and education weren't determinants for low birthweight, small-for-gestational-age birth, or preterm birth. However, black ethnicity was strongly associated with the three outcomes, especially with prematurity.

OBJETIVO Estimar a prevalência de nascimentos pré-termo por faixas de peso ao nascer e obter uma equação para correção de estimativas. MÉTODOS Revisão sistemática da literatura nacional, de 1990 a 2012, para identificar estudos com coleta primária de informações sobre peso ao nascer e idade gestacional. Foram selecionados 12 que contribuíram com tabulações da prevalência de nascimentos pré-termo para faixas de 100 g de peso ao nascer. Os resultados desses estudos foram combinados pelo método de polinômios fracionais, sendo obtidas curvas separadas para meninos e meninas, comparadas com os resultados do Sistema de Informações sobre Nascidos Vivos para os anos 2000, 2005, 2010 e 2011. RESULTADOS As estimativas da prevalência de nascimentos pré-termo, obtidas a partir dos estudos primários, foram superiores às do Sistema de Informações sobre Nascidos Vivos para praticamente todas as faixas de peso ao nascer. A prevalência relatada pelo Sistema de Informações sobre Nascidos Vivos foi de 7,1% em 2010, cerca de 38% menor do que a estimativa de 11,7% obtida com a equação de correção. CONCLUSÕES Os dados do Sistema de Informações sobre Nascidos Vivos quanto à prevalência de nascimento pré-termo não refletem a verdadeira dimensão da prematuridade no Brasil. Assim sendo, para sua utilização, será necessária a aplicação do fator de correção, conforme proposto.

The conservation of many endangered taxa relies on hybrid identification, and when hybrids become morphologically indistinguishable from the parental species, the use of molecular markers can assign individual admixture levels. Here, we present the puzzling case of the extinct in the wild Alagoas Curassow (Pauxi mitu), whose captive population descends from only three individuals. Hybridization with the Razor-billed Curassow (P. tuberosa) began more than eight generations ago, and admixture uncertainty affects the whole population. We applied an analysis framework that combined morphological diagnostic traits, Bayesian clustering analyses using 14 microsatellite loci, and mtDNA haplotypes to assess the ancestry of all individuals that were alive from 2008 to 2012. Simulated data revealed that our microsatellites could accurately assign an individual a hybrid origin until the second backcross generation, which permitted us to identify a pure group among the older, but still reproductive animals. No wild species has ever survived such a severe bottleneck, followed by hybridization, and studying the recovery capability of the selected pure Alagoas Curassow group might provide valuable insights into biological conservation theory.

Dengue viruses and other members of the Flaviviridae family are emerging human pathogens. Dengue is transmitted to humans by Aedes aegypti female mosquitoes. Following infection through the bite, cells of the hematopoietic lineage, like dendritic cells, are the first targets of dengue virus infection. Dendritic cells (DCs) are key antigen presenting cells, sensing pathogens, processing and presenting the antigens to T lymphocytes, and triggering an adaptive immune response. Infection of DCs by dengue virus may induce apoptosis, impairing their ability to present antigens to T cells, and thereby contributing to dengue pathogenesis. This review focuses on general mechanisms by which dengue virus triggers apoptosis, and possible influence of DC-apoptosis on dengue disease severity.

O queijo colonial produzido na Região Sudoeste do Estado do Paraná tem importância na vida econômica da população que reside na zona rural. No intuito de verificar a composição físico-química e conhecer a qualidade nutricional destes queijos coloniais, quarenta e oito amostras foram coletadas e avaliadas, sendo 24 da safra 2010 e 24 da safra 2011. Foram realizadas análises de teor de umidade, cinzas, proteínas, lipídios, carboidratos, índice de acidez, alcalinidade, cloretos, extrato seco total, gordura no extrato seco, valor calórico, pH (potencial hidrogeniônico) e Aw (atividade de água). As médias dos resultados indicaram diversidades de valores entre as diferentes estações do ano, bem como entre as marcas de queijos analisadas, demonstrando uma possível interferência da sazonalidade na composição físico-química e a como a necessidade de padronização das técnicas empregadas na produção do queijo colonial.

A monitorização da prematuridade é muito importante, considerando seu impacto na morbidade e mortalidade infantis e seus custos econômicos e sociais. Este estudo utilizou dados do Sistema de Informações sobre Nascidos Vivos (SINASC), implantado em 1990 e expandido de forma gradativa até cobrir cerca de 90% de todos os nascimentos no país, para descrever a evolução da prematuridade no Brasil, regiões e capitais, entre os anos de 1994 e 2005. Observou-se um aumento na proporção de partos prematuros no país como um todo e uma diminuição no número de nascimentos sem informação da idade gestacional. As regiões Sudeste, Sul e Centro-Oeste acompanharam a tendência do país, ao contrário das regiões Norte e Nordeste. São comparados os achados do SINASC com os de estudos de base populacional. O SINASC vem apresentando progressiva melhora na cobertura e qualidade dos dados, mas ainda existem problemas com a acurácia da idade gestacional, levando a uma subestimação da prevalência de prematuridade. Por causa de sua importância, torna-se necessário aprofundar os esforços para o ganho de acurácia do sistema.Monitoring preterm births is essential given their impact on infant morbidity and mortality and their economic and social costs. This article is based on data from the Information System on Live Births (SINASC), implemented in 1990 and expanded gradually to cover 90% of all births in the country. Preterm birth time trends are presented for Brazil, regions, and capitals from 1994 to 2005. At the national level, there was an increase in the preterm birth rate, accompanied by a reduction in the proportion of missing information on gestational age. The Southeast, South, and Central-West regions followed the national trend, while the preterm birth rate fell in the North and Northeast regions. We compared the findings from SINASC with those from population-based studies. The coverage and quality of SINASC has increased over time, but problems with the determination of gestational age still remain, leading to underestimation of preterm birth rates. Due to the importance of SINASC for monitoring, further efforts are needed to improve the system's accuracy.

The morphology of the ovaries in Uca rapax (Smith, 1870) was described based on macroscopic and microscopic analysis. Females were collected in Itamambuca mangrove, Ubatuba, state of São Paulo, Brazil. In the laboratory, 18 females had their ovaries removed and prepared for histology. Each gonad developmental stage was previously determined based on external and macroscopic morphology and afterwards each stage was microscopically described. The ovaries of U. rapax showed a pronounced macroscopic differentiation in size and coloration with the maturation of the gonad, with six ovarian developmental stages: immature, rudimentary, developing, developed, advanced and spent. During the vitellogenesis, the amount of oocytes in secondary stage increases in the ovary, resulting in a change in coloration of the gonad. Oogonias, primary oocytes, secondary oocytes and follicular cells were histologically described and measured. In female’s ovaries of U. rapax the modifications observed in the oocytes during the process of gonad maturation are similar to descriptions of gonads of other females of brachyuran crustaceans. The similarities are specially found in the morphological changes in the reproductive cells, and also in the presence and arrange of follicle cells during the process of ovary maturation. When external morphological characteristics of the gonads were compared to histological descriptions, it was possible to observe modifications that characterize the process in different developmental stages throughout the ovarian cycle and, consequently, the macroscopic classification of gonad stages agree with the modifications of the reproductive cells.A morfologia dos ovários de Uca rapax foi descrita baseada nas análises macroscópica e microscópica. As fêmeas foram coletadas no manguezal de Itamambuca, Ubatuba, Estado de São Paulo, Brasil. No laboratório, os ovários de 18 fêmeas foram retirados e preparados para histologia. Os estágios gonadais foram caracterizados previamente por meio de análises da morfologia externa e macroscopia e posteriormente cada estágio foi descrito microscopicamente. Os ovários das fêmeas de U. rapax apresentaram uma diferenciação macroscópica pronunciada no tamanho e coloração durante o processo de maturação, sendo caracterizados seis estágios de desenvolvimento ovariano: imaturo, rudimentar, em desenvolvimento, desenvolvido, avançado e esgotado. Microscopicamente, estes estágios diferiram quanto ao tamanho, cor e proporção de oogônias e oócitos presentes. Na análise histológica, oogônias, oócitos primários e secundários e células foliculares foram descritos e mensurados. As modificações observadas nos oócitos durante o processo de maturação dos ovários das fêmeas de U. rapax são similares às descrições de gônadas de outras fêmeas de braquiúros. As semelhanças foram especialmente observadas nas mudanças morfológicas das células reprodutivas e, também no arranjo das células foliculares durante o processo de maturação ovariana. Quando as características morfológicas externas das gônadas foram comparadas com as descrições histológicas, foi possível observar modificações que caracterizam o processo em diferentes estágios de desenvolvimento do ciclo ovariano e conseqüentemente, a classificação macroscópica das gônadas coincide com as modificações nas células reprodutivas.

OBJETIVO: Determinar a prevalência e os fatores associados ao consumo abusivo de álcool. MÉTODOS: Estudo transversal de base populacional incluindo 2.177 indivíduos adultos (20 a 69 anos) residentes na zona urbana da cidade de Pelotas, RS. Amostragem em múltiplos estágios. Consumo de álcool abusivo foi definido como mais de 30 g/dia. A análise ajustada foi realizada por regressão logística não condicional. RESULTADOS: A prevalência de consumo abusivo de álcool foi de 14,3%, sendo 29,2% para os homens e 3,7% para as mulheres. Os seguintes grupos apresentaram maior consumo abusivo de álcool após análise ajustada: homens, idosos, indivíduos com pele preta ou parda, de nível social mais baixo, fumantes pesados e que apresentam alguma doença crônica. Somente entre os homens, os que apresentavam distúrbios psiquiátricos menores mostraram maior índice de consumo abusivo e entre as mulheres a relação foi inversa com idade. Constatou-se também que entre os hipertensos, aqueles classificados como consumidores excessivos apresentavam pior controle da doença. CONCLUSÕES: O consumo abusivo de álcool é elevado e acarreta inúmeras conseqüências negativas para a saúde e qualidade de vida dos indivíduos. Os resultados indicam uma alta prevalência de consumo abusivo de álcool e identificam alguns subgrupos da população mais suscetíveis ao alcoolismo.OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of heavy alcohol consumption and factors associated with it in a Brazilian adult population. METHODS: Cross-sectional population-based study including 2,177 adults (aged 20 to 69), living in the urban area of the municipality of Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The sample was selected in multiple stages. Heavy alcohol consumption was defined as above 30g/day. The adjusted analysis was conducted by logistic regression. RESULTS: The prevalence of heavy alcohol consumption was 14.3% (29.2% among men and 3.7% among women). The following groups presented higher prevalences of heavy alcohol consumption after adjusted analysis: men, elderly people, blacks or mulattoes, heavy smokers, and people who present some kind of chronic disease. Men with minor psychiatric disorders showed higher prevalences of heavy alcohol consumption than other men. Among women, association between age and heavy alcohol consumption was inversely related. Furthermore, the study indicates that among hypertensive subjects, those with heavy alcohol consumption presented worse disease management. CONCLUSIONS: Heavy alcohol consumption is high and results in countless negative consequences for the individual's health and quality of life. Our results highlight the high prevalence of heavy alcohol consumption and indicate subsections of the whole population more susceptible to alcoholism.
