Abstract

The tanks designed for liquefied natural gas transport must be thermally insulated from the environment due to the low condensing temperature of the gas. The effectiveness of thermal insulation significantly affects the tank's operating parameters and its operating costs. As there is no perfect insulation, there is a need for analyses that would determine its suitability in specific applications. In this paper the issue of heat transfer through double-walled cryogenic tanks with evacuated insulation system was discussed. Afterwards the study of insulation variants of liquefied natural gas cryogenic road tanker was presented. The use of several layers of insulation made of modern and efficient materials such as aero-gel and fiberglass or the use of multi-layer isolation has been considered and compared to the use of perlite powder. The heat flux through insulation systems was tested for different variants of evacuated insulation under residual gas pressure of 10-1 Pa, 10-3 Pa, and 100 kPa. Finally, for selected insulation variants, the heat leakage was tested for 50 m3 liquefied natural gas road tanker. The investigation of heat-flow for the transient thermal analysis was performed by applying finite element method. The aim of the study was to determine the variant of insulation system with the relatively low heat leakage to the tank and low cost of materials and vacuum production.

Abstract

The antiproton experiment PANDA at FAIR is designed to bring hadron physics to a new level in terms of scope, precision and accuracy. In this work, its unique capability for studies of hyperons is outlined. We discuss ground-state hyperons as diagnostic tools to study non-perturbative aspects of the strong interaction, and fundamental symmetries. New simulation studies have been carried out for two benchmark hyperon-antihyperon production channels: $\bar{p}p \to \bar{\Lambda}\Lambda$ and $\bar{p}p \to \bar{\Xi}^+\Xi^-$. The results, presented in detail in this paper, show that hyperon-antihyperon pairs from these reactions can be exclusively reconstructed with high efficiency and very low background contamination. In addition, the polarisation and spin correlations have been studied, exploiting the weak, self-analysing decay of hyperons and antihyperons. Two independent approaches to the finite efficiency have been applied and evaluated: one standard multidimensional efficiency correction approach, and one efficiency independent approach. The applicability of the latter was thoroughly evaluated for all channels, beam momenta and observables. The standard method yields good results in all cases, and shows that spin observables can be studied with high precision and accuracy already in the first phase of data taking with PANDA., Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures. Abstract

The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Darmstadt, Germany, provides unique possibilities for a new generation of hadron-, nuclear- and atomic physics experiments. The future antiProton ANnihilations at DArmstadt (PANDA or $$\overline{\mathrm{P}}$$ P ¯ ANDA) experiment at FAIR will offer a broad physics programme, covering different aspects of the strong interaction. Understanding the latter in the non-perturbative regime remains one of the greatest challenges in contemporary physics. The antiproton–nucleon interaction studied with PANDA provides crucial tests in this area. Furthermore, the high-intensity, low-energy domain of PANDA allows for searches for physics beyond the Standard Model, e.g. through high precision symmetry tests. This paper takes into account a staged approach for the detector setup and for the delivered luminosity from the accelerator. The available detector setup at the time of the delivery of the first antiproton beams in the HESR storage ring is referred to as the Phase One setup. The physics programme that is achievable during Phase One is outlined in this paper.

Abstract

Road tankers for liquefied natural gas are designed as double-walled vacuum insulated tanks. The temperature difference between the fluid in the inner vessel and the environmental temperature can reachup to 200 K. Supports holding the internal vessel must be able to transfer complex mechanical loads occurring under operating conditions and at the same time minimize the heat leakage to the tank. In this paper the construction of a steel support with a composite insert for a 25 m3 tank was considered. The proposed design was tested in thermal and mechanical finite element analysis using ANSYS software.

Abstract

The $\overline{{\rm{P}}}\mathrm{ANDA}$ (anti-Proton ANnihiliation at DArmstadt) experiment will be one of the four flagship experiments at the new international accelerator complex FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) in Darmstadt, Germany. $\overline{{\rm{P}}}\mathrm{ANDA}$ will address fundamental questions of hadron physics and quantum chromodynamics using high-intensity cooled antiproton beams with momenta between 1.5 and 15 GeV/c and a design luminosity of up to 2 × 1032 cm−2 s−1. Excellent particle identification (PID) is crucial to the success of the $\overline{{\rm{P}}}\mathrm{ANDA}$ physics program. Hadronic PID in the barrel region of the target spectrometer will be performed by a fast and compact Cherenkov counter using the detection of internally reflected Cherenkov light (DIRC) technology. It is designed to cover the polar angle range from 22° to 140° and will provide at least 3 standard deviations (s.d.) π/K separation up to 3.5 GeV/c, matching the expected upper limit of the final state kaon momentum distribution from simulation. This documents describes the technical design and the expected performance of the $\overline{{\rm{P}}}\mathrm{ANDA}$ Barrel DIRC detector. The design is based on the successful BaBar DIRC with several key improvements. The performance and system cost were optimized in detailed detector simulations and validated with full system prototypes using particle beams at GSI and CERN. The final design meets or exceeds the PID goal of clean π/K separation with at least 3 s.d. over the entire phase space of charged kaons in the Barrel DIRC.

Abstract

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is transported and stored in liquid state at temperature of -163C. In order to use natural gas directly in its gaseous form, LNG must be vaporized, which requires the input of heat. Ambient air vaporizers (AAVs) are commonly used for that purpose in LNG regasification stations. These heat exchangers consist of longitudinally finned tubes with a large heat transfer surface area, provide high efficiency and are virtually cost-free since the heat is taken from the ambient air. This paper presents the results finite element thermal analysis of heat transfer through the finned tubes of ambient air vaporizers under the conditions of total frosting.

Abstract

Ambient air vaporizers, depending on their efficiency, can be up to several meters high. Therefore, they can have a large outside surface area exposed to the wind. Forced air flow through the vaporizer structure have a beneficial effect on improving heat transfer from the environment. On the other hand, if the vaporizer is placed in the region of significant wind velocities, the wind forces acting on the structure can be considerable. This paper presents CFD analysis of air flow through the structure of the ambient air vaporizer with a 6 x 6 finned tube array. The effect of changing wind direction on the wind pressure and wind velocity distributions is investigated.

Abstract

Bound nuclear systems with two units of strangeness are still poorly known despite their importance for many strong interaction phenomena. Stored antiprotons beams in the GeV range represent an unparalleled factory for various hyperon-antihyperon pairs. Their outstanding large production probability in antiproton collisions will open the floodgates for a series of new studies of systems which contain two or even more units of strangeness at the PANDA experiment at FAIR. For the first time, high resolution gamma-spectroscopy of doubly strange Lambda Lambda-hypernuclei will be performed, thus complementing measurements of ground state decays of Lambda Lambda-hypernuclei at J-PARC or possible decays of particle unstable hypernuclei in heavy ion reactions. High resolution spectroscopy of multistrange Xi(-) -atoms will be feasible and even the production of Omega(-) -atoms will be within reach. The latter might open the door to the vertical bar S vertical bar = 3 world in strangeness nuclear physics, by the study of the hadronic Omega(-) -nucleus interaction. For the first time it will be possible to study the behavior of Xi(+) in nuclear systems under well controlled conditions. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

Components of transport trucks are subjected to dynamic cyclic loads. The magnitude of these loads depends on road conditions and cargo mass. Cyclic loads can cause fatigue failure at stress levels significantly below the yield strength of the material. When calculating fatigue, it is necessary to determine the actual loads acting on the structure under working conditions. In this study, stanchion displacements of overloaded timber trucks were measured under both static and dynamic loads. For the specified mass of timber, a history of dynamic loads acting on the stanchion was obtained. Then, based on the finite element analysis, stress concentration points were determined within the base material and welded joints of the stanchion. The history of maximum stresses at concentration points was determined. Stress ranges and mean stresses for the load history were calculated using the rainflow fatigue cycle counting method. Repeats to failure were determined on the basis of the Palmgren&ndash, Miner cumulative damage rule and the modified Goodman correction for the points with the highest stress level. Experimental investigation of the actual load history of the stanchion of significantly overloaded timber truck allowed to determine the mileage to potential failure.

Abstract

Railway track maintenance services aim to shorten the time of removing failures on the railways. One of the most important element that shorten the repair time is the quick access to the failure site with an appropriate equipment. The use of road-rail vehicles is becoming increasingly important in this field. In this type of constructions, it is possible to use proven road vehicles such as self-propelled machines or trucks running on wheels with tires. Equipping these vehicles with a parallel rail drive system allows for quick access to the failure site using both roads and railways. Steel rail wheels of road-rail vehicles are designed for specific applications. Since the total weight of vehicle is a crucial parameter for roadworthiness, the effort is made to minimize the mass of rail wheels. The wheel under consideration is mounted directly on the hydraulic motor. This method of assembly is structurally convenient, as no shafts or intermediate couplings are required. On the other hand, it results in strict requirements for the wheel geometry and can cause significant stress concentration. Therefore, the problem of wheel geometry optimization is discussed. Consideration is given to the use of ER8 steel for railway application and 42CrMo4 high-strength steel. Finite element analysis within Ansys software and various optimization tools and methods, such as random tool, subproblem approximation method and first-order method are applied. The obtained results allow to minimize the rail wheel mass with respect to the used material. Moreover, computational demands and methods leading to the best results are compared.

Abstract

In this paper, thermal properties of materials for evacuated insulation systems of double-walled cryogenic tanks were discussed. Than the comparison of insulation variants for LNG cryogenic road tankers was presented. The use of several layers of insulation made of materials such as aerogel and fiberglass or the use of multilayer isolation (MLI) has been compared to the use of perlite powder. The average heat flux through the tank walls and insulation system has been compared under different vacuum levels and in the absence of vacuum. The comparative analysis was performed by applying transient thermal analysis using finite element method.

Abstract

The exclusive charmonium production process in (P) over barp annihilation with an associated pi 0 meson (p) over barp -> J/psi pi(0) is studied in the framework of QCD collinear factorization. The feasibility of measuring this reaction through the J/psi -> e(+) e(-) decay channel with the AntiProton ANnihilation at DArmstadt ((P) over bar ANDA) experiment is investigated. Simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as the background rejection from various sources including the (P) over barp -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) and (p) over barp -> J/psi pi(0)pi(0) reactions are performed with PANDAROOT, the simulation and analysis software framework of the (P) over bar ANDA experiment. It is shown that the measurement can be done at (P) over bar ANDA with significant constraining power under the assumption of an integrated luminosity attainable in four to five months of data taking at the maximum design luminosity.

Abstract

Baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs) encoding valuable new information on hadron structure appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description for several types of hard exclusive reactions. In this paper, we address the possibility of accessing nucleon-to-pion ($��N$) TDAs from $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- ��^0$ reaction with the future PANDA detector at the FAIR facility. At high center of mass energy and high invariant mass squared of the lepton pair $q^2$, the amplitude of the signal channel $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- ��^0$ admits a QCD factorized description in terms of $��N$ TDAs and nucleon Distribution Amplitudes (DAs) in the forward and backward kinematic regimes. Assuming the validity of this factorized description, we perform feasibility studies for measuring $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- ��^0$ with the PANDA detector. Detailed simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as on rejection of the most severe background channel, i.e. $\bar{p}p \to ��^+��^- ��^0$ were performed for the center of mass energy squared $s = 5$ GeV$^2$ and $s = 10$ GeV$^2$, in the kinematic regions $3.0 < q^2 < 4.3$ GeV$^2$ and $5 < q^2 < 9$ GeV$^2$, respectively, with a neutral pion scattered in the forward or backward cone $| \cos��_{��^0}| > 0.5 $ in the proton-antiproton center of mass frame. Results of the simulation show that the particle identification capabilities of the PANDA detector will allow to achieve a background rejection factor of $5\cdot 10^7$ ($1\cdot 10^7$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=5$ GeV$^2$, and of $1\cdot 10^8$ ($6\cdot 10^6$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=10$ GeV$^2$, while keeping the signal reconstruction efficiency at around $40\%$. At both energies, a clean lepton signal can be reconstructed with the expected statistics corresponding to $2$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. Abstract

The combination of Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and angle resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ARXPS) has been applied to the analysis of the distribution of elements at the surface region of electrochemically etched tungsten tips and the determination of the thickness of a layer with oxygen and carbon contamination. Auger line profiling revealed a homogeneous distribution of oxygen and significant enrichment of carbon on the W tip between 0 and 1.5 μm from the top. The thickness of the contamination layer on various W materials, electrochemically etched, was found to be 1.35±0.15 nm as measured using ARXPS, and was estimated to be about 1–3 nm as measured by AES.

Abstract

To study fundamental questions of hadron and nuclear physics in interactions of antiprotons with nucleons and nuclei, the universal PANDA detector will be built. Gluonic excitations, the physics of strange and charm quarks and nucleon structure studies will be performed with unprecedented accuracy thereby allowing high-precision tests of the strong interaction. The proposed PANDA detector is a state-of-the art internal target detector at the HESR at FAIR allowing the detection and identification of neutral and charged particles generated within the relevant angular and energy range. This report presents a summary of the physics accessible at PANDA and what performance can be expected.
