ABSTRACT: Adding milk replacer powder (MRP) to whole milk during the entire preweaning period can increase growth but raises concern because of low starter feed intake and slumps in ADG at weaning and postweaning. In the current study, effects of adding MRP to pasteurized whole milk (PWM) during d 10 to 41 or d 10 to 59 of age were investigated in comparison with PWM. Calves (24 females and 21 males; 39.8 ± 1.85 kg BW) were randomly allocated to 1 of 3 treatments: (1) conventional protocol, 5 L/d PWM from d 3 to 56, and 2.5 L/d from d 57 to 59 of age (CONV; TS intake = 31.9 kg), (2) short duration of adding MRP to PWM protocol, 5 L/d PWM from d 3 to 9, 5 L/d PWM + MRP (18% TS) from d 10 to 41, 5 L/d PWM from d 42 to 56, and 2.5 L/d PWM from d 57 to 59 (SHD; TS intake = 42.3 kg), (3) long duration of adding MRP to PWM protocol, 5 L/d PWM from d 3–9, 5 L/d PWM + MRP from d 10–56, 2.5 L/d PWM + MRP from d 57–59 (LD; TS intake = 47.7 kg). The osmolality of PWM and PWM + MRP was 278 and 519 mOsm/L, respectively. Calves were weaned on d 60, and the study terminated on d 75. There was a treatment × time interaction for starter intake, where intake was greater for CONV than other treatments from d 14–41 and was greater in CONV than LD during d 42 to 48 and d 56 to 62 of age. Final BW was lower in CONV calves than LD calves. Weaning BW and overall hip height were lower in CONV calves than other treatments. The CONV calves had lower ADG at d 14 to 27 and d 35 to 41, and SHD calves had lower ADG at d 42 to 48 than other treatments. Calves fed CONV treatment had lower ruminal acetate and greater propionate than SHD calves during preweaning. Calves fed LD treatment had lower total VFA and tended to have greater ruminal pH than other treatments. Calves fed CONV had greater neutrophils and neutrophils/lymphocytes ratio and lower lymphocytes than other treatments. Glucose concentration was greater for LD versus other treatments at d 56, and lower for SHD versus other treatments at d 70 of study. Insulin concentration and homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance index were greater in LD compared with other treatments during preweaning but were not different postweaning. Serum BHB was greater in CONV than other treatments. Albumin was greater for CONV versus other treatments at d 56, however, it was greater in LD-fed calves at d 70 of study. Results indicate that feeding a PWM + MRP to the calves during the entire preweaning period resulted in lower starter feed intake around weaning, but overall starter intake was similar with a greater final BW and fewer health-related issues throughout the study. Shifting a PWM + MRP to the conventional whole milk at d 40 of age decreased the ADG of calves.

ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the effects of replacing cereal grains and soybean meal with by-products (BY) on production performance, nutrient digestibility, ruminal fermentation, nutrient recovery, and eating and chewing behavior of moderate-producing dairy cows under heat-stress conditions. Twelve multiparous Holstein cows (116.7 ± 12.01 d in milk; 42.7 ± 5.06 kg/d milk yield; 665 ± 77 kg body weight; mean ± SD) were used in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square with 28-d periods (21 d for diet adaptation and 7 d for sampling and data collection). Cows were fed a total mixed ration containing a 39.2:60.8 ratio of forage to concentrate throughout the experiment. All diets were formulated to be isoenergetic and isonitrogenous, with different concentrates. Diets were (1) control diet based on cereal grains (CON: ground corn and ground barley, plus soybean meal); (2) sugar-rich BY diet (S-BY-CM: beet pulp, citrus pulp, and liquid molasses, plus canola meal); and (3) cereal grain BY diet (CG-BY: rice bran, corn germ meal, wheat bran, barley sprout, and broken corn). Our results showed that replacing grains with BY increased neutral detergent fiber intake and digestibility but decreased starch intake, human-edible energy, and human-edible protein. Milk yield and dry matter intake (DMI) decreased more in cows fed the CG-BY diet compared with the other 2 treatments. In contrast, no significant differences were observed between the CON and S-BY-CM diets in terms of milk yield and DMI. The S-BY-CM diet increased energy-corrected milk production compared with the CG-BY diet (36.2 vs. 34.3 kg/d), but CG-BY enhanced feed conversion efficiency compared with the other 2 treatments. Although the S-BY-CM diet prolonged the eating and sorting of small particles, neither of the dietary treatments affected chewing activity or ruminal pH 4 h after feeding. Furthermore, both diets containing BY contributed to an increase in milk fat content in comparison to the CON group. Additionally, the CG-BY and S-BY-CM diets demonstrated better performance than the CON diet in terms of human-edible feed conversion efficiency for protein and energy. The results indicated that S-BY-CM can completely replace barley and corn grain in the diet of mid-lactating dairy cows exposed to heat-stress conditions without any negative effect on production and ruminal pH. However, the inclusion of CG-BY did impair DMI, milk yield, and digestibility of nutrients and is not recommended during heat-stress conditions.

In this paper, we present a novel formation control approach in the framework of event-triggered (ET) control to provide a solution to the surveillance problem. To do this, we identify two main challenges which are the switching topology of the drones and the limited bandwidth of the communication network, which are also valid in formation applications. To provide a solution to switching topologies, we propose a networked continuous controller that is robust in the presence of connection switching between drones and the target. Then, we propose a networked controller with ET communication in some aperiodic instants which reduces the required bandwidth and load within the communication network. We guarantee the stability of the developed ET controller and prove that the Zeno behavior cannot occur. To validate the method, we present realistic 3D simulation results conducted in the Simulink environment of Matlab® for different scenarios. The results of the study show the effectiveness of the proposed controller, especially for limited bandwidth channels as the ETC scheme has decreased the load within the communication network while resulting in a robust and efficient formation performance. We also considered moving target scenarios with missing possibilities to validate the robustness of the proposed method.

Abstract The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of corn processing index (CPI)—particularly at 70% and 85%—in starter feed in combination with the provision of forage, either alfalfa hay (AH) or wheat straw (WS), on feed intake, growth performance, rumen pH, and blood metabolites of dairy calves. Forty-eight male Holstein calves (43.0 ± 1.5 kg body weight) were randomly assigned (n = 12 calves per treatment) to one of four dietary treatments: (1) a textured starter diet containing 70% CPI and AH (70CPIAH), (2) a textured starter feed containing 70% CPI combined with WS (70CPIWS), (3) a textured starter feed containing 85% CPI and AH (85CPIAH), (4) a textured starter feed containing 85% CPI combined with WS (85CPIWS). Intake of starter feed (TMR) and milk was individually monitored and recorded daily, while body weight was measured weekly. On days 30 and 65, blood samples were collected from all calves 3 h after morning feeding. No interaction was detected between the CPI of starter feed diets and forage provision for starter intake, dry matter intake (DMI), metabolizable energy intake (MEI), feed efficiency (FE), average daily gain (ADG), and body weight (BW). The preweaning and overall DMI, preweaning, postweaning and overall FE and ADG, preweaning and overall starter intake, preweaning and overall ME intake, and postweaning and overall BW were greater for calves fed 85CPI than those fed 70CPI starter diets. Postweaning and overall ADG and postweaning FE were greater in calves fed WS than those fed AH. Body length and hip width were greater for calves offered 85CPI than in fed 70CPI. Wheat straw supplementation increased rumen pH at day 65 in calves fed 70CPI, but not in those fed 85CPI. No interaction was found between the CPI in the starter feed diet and the forage source for starter intake and DMI, MEI, FE, and BW. The results showed that including corn with 85% processing index in dairy calf starters improved their growth performance.

Abstract This study examined the impact of two corn processing methods (steam-flaked (SFC) vs. ground) combined with two weaning ages (50 or 75 days) on calf performance, blood metabolites, rumen fermentation, nutrient digestion, and behavior. The study involved 48 three-day-old Holstein calves, with an average body weight of 41.4 ± 2.2 kg. The experimental design was a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement, resulting in four treatment groups: SFC50 (SFC and weaning at 50 days), SFC75 (SFC and weaning at 75 days), GC50 (ground corn and weaning at 50 days), and GC75 (ground corn and weaning at 75 days). Calves were given whole milk at 4 L/ day from day 3–15 and 7 L/ day from day 16 to either 43 or 68, depending on weaning age. Weaning occurred between days 44 and 50 for early-weaned calves and between days 69 and 75 for late-weaned calves. The study lasted until calves were 93 days old. The starter ration consisted of soybean meal, corn grain, 5% chopped wheat straw and premix. Results indicated that the SFC-based starter feed improved calf performance and nutrient digestion, as evidenced by increased weight gain, dry matter, crude protein, and neutral detergent fiber digestibility. Calves fed the SFC-based starter diet had lower blood albumin and urea N concentrations, while blood total protein and globulin concentrations were higher, especially in early-weaned calves. No significant changes in rumen pH and ammonia-N concentration were observed. In addition, the SFC starter feed resulted in higher volatile fatty acids concentration and longer feeding time in weaned calves compared to ground corn. Overall, these results suggest that an SFC-based starter feed may be beneficial for both early and late weaned calves.

Abstract The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of partial replacement of inorganic minerals (IM) with trace minerals in advance chelate components form in starter diets for calves of different birth weights on performance, health, and behavior of Holstein calves. Fifty-two calves were assigned to 1 of 4 treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with two mineral sources (IM or advanced chelated minerals (ACMS)) and two birth weights (low or normal birth weight; LBW or NBW). Calves were weaned on d 56 and remained until d 71 of the study. Results showed that NBW calves had higher feed intake, withers and hip height, larger heart girth and lower fecal score than LBW calves throughout the study. Calves receiving ACMS tended to have higher feed intake, larger hip width, lower eye and nose scores, and lower rectal temperature throughout the study than IM calves. In addition, ACMS calves had larger abdominal girths at d 56 of the study compared to IM calves. Interactions between birth weights and mineral sources for preweaning average daily gain (ADG) and weaning and final BW showed that ACMS supplementation improved ADG and BW in LBW calves. Non-nutritive oral behavior was lower in ACMS calves compared to IM calves during all periods. Overall, ACMS feeding decreased non-nutritive oral behavior and improved calf health status during the study. In addition, feeding ACMS to dairy calves with LBW increased their ADG to a similar extent as to NBW calves, suggesting an improvement in their efficiency.

Abstract The present study investigated the effects of adding wheat straw treated with exogenous fibrolytic enzymes (EFE) and a probiotic supplement to finely ground starters on growth performance, rumen fermentation, behavior, digestibility, and health of dairy calves. A total of 48 Holstein dairy calves (39.8 ± 1.67 kg body weight) were randomly assigned to one of 4 nutritional treatments (n = 12 calves per treatment). The experiment was conducted in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments consisting of two diets with or without EFE-treated wheat straw (2 g/day/calf) and diets with or without probiotics (2 g/day/calf). All calves were weaned on day 63 and remained in the study until day 84. The addition of EFE to wheat straw had no effect on starter feed intake, increased neutral detergent fiber (NDF) digestibility and recumbency, but decreased average daily gain (ADG) after weaning (240 g/d). The addition of probiotics to the diet had no effect on starter feed intake, improved feed efficiency, ADG (150 g/d), final weight (11.3 kg), and NDF digestibility, and decreased the ratio of acetate to propionate in the rumen. The addition of probiotics to starter feed for calves could improve their growth.

ABSTRACT: Early life milk intake can influence the survival and future productivity of replacement heifers. The present study determined the effects of different amounts of milk through step-up/step-down or conventional feeding methods on the performance of dairy calves. Thirty-nine Holstein calves (18 male and 21 female) were used in a completely randomized design. Calves were randomly allocated to 1 of 3 treatments: (1) conventional milk feeding (CONV; 4.5 L/d of milk from d 1 to 50 and 2 L/d of milk at d 51 and 52 of the study; total milk intake = 229 L); (2) low milk intake with step-up/step-down method (L-SUSD, 4 L/d of milk from d 1 to 10, 6 L/d from d 11 to 20, 8 L/d from d 21 to 30, 6 L/d from d 31 to 40, 4 L/d from d 41 to 50, and 2 L/d milk at d 51 and 52 of the study, total milk intake = 284 L); (3) high milk intake with step-up/step-down method (H-SUSD, 6 L/d of milk from d 1 to 10, 8 L/d from d 11 to 20, 10 L/d from d 21 to 30, 8 L/d from d 31 to 40, 6 L/d from d 41 to 50, 4 L/d milk at d 51, and 2 L/d milk at d 52 of the study, total milk intake = 386 L). All calves were weaned at d 52 and followed until d 70. Performance data (every week), skeletal growth (d 52 and 70), and ruminal fermentation parameters and digestibility (d 35, 55, and 70) were analyzed as repeated measurements with PROC MIXED of SAS version 9.3 (SAS Institute Inc.). A treatment × time interaction was observed for total dry matter intake (TDMI) as follows: TDMI differed among all treatments where H-SUSD > L-SUSD > CONV from d 11 to 38 of study, greater for H-SUSD versus other treatments from d 3 to 10 and d 39 to 70 of study. Starter feed intake and average daily gain (ADG) were greater in H-SUSD calves than in CONV calves, and L-SUSD treatment was intermediate for those traits. The H-SUSD calves tended to have greater body weight (BW) and lower feed efficiency than calves fed CONV or L-SUSD treatments. The treatments did not affect structural growth parameters, except for hip width, which tended to be greater in H-SUSD calves than CONV calves. Regardless of treatments, ADG, starter feed intake, BW, and body measurements increased as calves aged, whereas feed efficiency increased from d 1 to 52 of study and decreased from d 52 to 70 of study. The treatments had no effect on digestibility, rumen parameters, or fecal score. Overall, in calves that were weaned at 52 d and fed milk 3 times daily, the high milk intake (386 L) through the SUSD method did not increase diarrhea or decrease digestibility but increased starter feed intake and ADG.

Abstract Background In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in using high quantities of milk or milk replacer (MR) in heat-stressed calves to alleviate the negative effects of high environmental temperatures on their performance. However, observations have indicated a decline in growth performance in the weaning and post-weaning period, which might be optimized with increasing total solids (TS) in milk and weaning age. This study aims to optimize the effects of higher quantities of milk on late weaned calves' performance by increasing TS concentration or delivery route in summer conditions. Method Forty-eight newborn Holstein calves were used in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with the factors of pre-weaning total plane of milk (PM) intake (low vs. high) and milk TS content (12% vs. 17%). The treatments were (1) low PM (LPM) intake with 12% TS (TS intake = 45.9 kg), (2) LPM intake with 17% TS (TS intake = 65.1 kg), (3) high PM (HPM) intake with 12% TS (TS intake = 63.7 kg); and (4) HPM intake with 17% TS (TS intake = 90.3 kg). Calves were weaned at d 83, and the study was terminated at d 103 of age. Performance data (every 10 day), skeletal growth (d 80 and 100), ruminal fermentation parameters (d 48 and 91), and behavioral measurements (d 69, 70, 93 and 94) were analyzed as repeated measurements with PROC MIXED of SAS 9.4 (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC). To evaluate grain yield and some agronomic traits of tow corn varieties as a second crop under drought stress and application of cycocel an experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Station of Jahad-Keshavarsi of Khoy during summer growing season of 2005. Experimental design was a split-split plot based on RCBD with four replications. The factors consisted of irrigation as the main factor with three levels (irrigation after 70±5, 100±5 and 130±5 mm evaporation from class A pan), varieties 260 and 301 of corn as subfactor and application of different rates of cycocel (with and without application) as sub-subfactor. Results showed that drought stress reduced plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves and the leaf area index, biological yield and grain yield. Application of cycocel increased the stem diameter, biological yield and grain yield as compared with not application of cycocel. Generally, It can be concluded that irrigation after 70 mm evaporation and the application of cycocel can play major roles in increasing corn grain yield.

In this study, the effects of 2 rumen degradable nitrogen, N, source (urea vs. casein) were investigated on rumen degradability, ammonia concentration, dilution rate, microbial protein synthesis (MPS) and MPS efficiency (EMPS) in sheep fed diet based on untreated straw (US) or treated straw (TS). Four rumen fistulated sheep were assigned to 1 of the 4 treatments: (i) US with urea (USU); (ii) US with casein (USC); (iii) TS with urea (TSU); and (iv) TS with casein (TSC), according to a 4 × 4 Latin square design. Barley straw was treated with 4.1% sodium hydroxide (w/ w DM basis; pH 11.5) followed by 2% hydrogen peroxide. The treated straw was packed in 220 l drums and kept for 6 weeks. Compared to US diets, feeding the TS diets enhanced ruminal fiber degradability (62.3 vs 46.3%), total tract organic matter (OM) digestibility (59.4 vs 53.8%), OM intake (768 vs 546 g/d), dilution rate (0.082 vs 0.056/h), and MPS (45.7 vs 29.7 g/d), but it had no effect on EMPS. Rumen fiber degradability but not the DM one of only TS enhanced with casein supplementation as compared to urea supplementation. No interaction was found between supplemented nitrogen sources and straw type. It is concluded that substitution of US with TS increased intake, digestibility and MPS when supplemented with either urea or casein as nitrogen source. However, fiber degradability was improved with casein supplementation.

A 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments was used to investigate the interactive effects of dietary macronutrient composition [high-starch, low-fat, low-fiber (HsLFF) than low-starch, high-fat, high-fiber (LsHFF)] and N source [soybean meal (SBM) or partially replaced by slow-release urea (SRU)] on lactation performance, rumen fermentation, N utilization efficiency, nutrient digestibility, blood metabolites, and feeding behavior in cows. A replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design was used involving 12 multiparous Holstein cows (milk yield of 40.5 ± 5.6 kg/d, BW of 590 ± 20 kg; 81 ± 12 d in milk). The HsLFF diet contained 300 g/kg starch, 31.3 g/kg fat, and 301 g/kg NDF, without straw or additional fat. In contrast, the LsHFF diet contained 195.5 g/kg starch, 60.8 g/kg fat, and 367.5 g/kg NDF, enriched with wheat straw (100 g/kg), and additional fat (34 g/kg). The diets were formulated to be iso-nitrogenous and isocaloric. Cows fed the HsLFF diet had greater DM intake, digestibility of DM and CP, milk yield and milk protein %, but lower intakes of NDF, and physically effective NDF, and milk fat % than cows fed the LsHFF diet. Replacing SBM with SRU significantly increased milk solids yield without affecting other lactation performance or BW. Cows fed the LsHFF diet had higher ruminal pH and branched-chain VFA proportions but lower total VFA concentrations compared with the HsLFF diet, while those on the LsHFF-SRU diet had the highest ruminal ammonia levels. Compared with the HsLFF diet, cows fed LsHFF had lower NE intake, milk energy output and energy requirement for maintenance, although energy balances were similar among groups. The HsLFF diet improved N utilization, resulting in higher N content in milk and lower N excretion in feces. Blood metabolite studies showed significant interactions between the main factors, particularly for blood glucose and creatinine, with the lowest levels in cows fed the LsHFF-SRU and LsHFF-SBM diets. In addition, alanine aminotransferase levels were higher in cows fed the LsHFF diet than in cows fed the HsLFF diet. This could indicate early-stage liver stress due to the metabolic imbalance caused by a high-fat, low-starch diet, which can alter energy metabolism. Cows on the HsLFF-SRU diet had the highest glucose levels, indicating possible changes in carbohydrate metabolism or a higher metabolic rate. The concentration of BUN increased steadily after feeding in the LsHFF diet and peaked after 4 h in the LsHFF-SRU diet, with no difference between N sources in the HsLFF diet. Partial replacement of SRU with SBM had no effect on BUN. The interaction between the main factors had a significant effect on MUN content, which was highest in LsHFF-SRU and lowest in HsLFF-SRU, with no difference between the N sources in the HsLFF diets. Overall, while diets with reduced starch and increased fiber and fat compromised lactation performance, partially substituting SRU with SBM helped maintain milk production and milk nitrogen efficiency. However, the LsHFF-SRU diet was less efficient in N utilization, as shown by higher levels of ruminal ammonia, BUN and MUN., (©, The Authors. This paper introduces a robust method for estimating states and switching signals in impulsive switched systems with unknown inputs. It uses a reduced-order estimator to handle inaccessible states and an output derivative-based method to address the effects of unknown inputs, even though this adds some impulsive effects. The method is divided into two main steps: first, dedicated estimators determine the switching signal and identify the active subsystem; then, state estimation is carried out. By incorporating the estimated switching signal, the method effectively eliminates impulsive effects caused by unknown inputs. The study also explores the key conditions needed to ensure that estimation errors decrease exponentially. It uses a common Lyapunov function and Linear Matrix Inequality techniques. This work presents highly porous magnetic activated carbon nanoparticles (MPFRC-A) derived from pine fruit residue. The MPFRC-A were produced through a three-step process: physical activation (carbonization temperature: 110-550 °C), chemical activation (H 2 SO 4 (0.1 N, 96%)), and co-precipitation. These nanoparticles were then used to remove tetracycline (TC) and paracetamol (PC) from water. Functionalization with Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles on the surface of the pine fruit residue-derived activated carbon (PFRC-A) resulted in high saturation magnetization, allowing for separation from aqueous solution using an external magnet. The MPFRC-A adsorbent was characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analyses, In the experimental section, the effects of various factors on the adsorption process were investigated, including pH, contact time, initial pollutant concentrations, adsorbent dosage, and temperature. Based on these investigations, adsorption isotherm models and kinetics were studied and determined. The results showed that MPFRC-A exhibited a large specific surface area (182.5 m 2 /g) and a high total pore volume (0.33 cm 3 /g). The maximum adsorption capacity was achieved at pH 6 and 5 for PC and TC drugs with an adsorbent dose of 400 mg and an initial concentration of 20 mg/L at 25 °C. The study revealed that the experimental data were well-fitted by the Langmuir isotherm model (R 2  > 0.98), with maximum uptake capacities of 43.75 mg/g for TC and 41.7 mg/g for PC. This study evaluated the effects of replacing cereal grains and soybean meal with by-products (BY) on production performance, nutrient digestibility, ruminal fermentation, nutrient recovery, and eating and chewing behavior of moderate-producing dairy cows under heat-stress conditions. Twelve multiparous Holstein cows (116.7 ± 12.01 d in milk; 42.7 ± 5.06 kg/d milk yield; 665 ± 77 kg body weight; mean ± SD) were used in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square with 28-d periods (21 d for diet adaptation and 7 d for sampling and data collection). Cows were fed a total mixed ration containing a 39.2:60.8 ratio of forage to concentrate throughout the experiment. All diets were formulated to be isoenergetic and isonitrogenous, with different concentrates. Diets were (1) control diet based on cereal grains (CON: ground corn and ground barley, plus soybean meal); (2) sugar-rich BY diet (S-BY-CM: beet pulp, citrus pulp, and liquid molasses, plus canola meal); and (3) cereal grain BY diet (CG-BY: rice bran, corn germ meal, wheat bran, barley sprout, and broken corn). Our results showed that replacing grains with BY increased neutral detergent fiber intake and digestibility but decreased starch intake, human-edible energy, and human-edible protein. Milk yield and dry matter intake (DMI) decreased more in cows fed the CG-BY diet compared with the other 2 treatments. In contrast, no significant differences were observed between the CON and S-BY-CM diets in terms of milk yield and DMI. The S-BY-CM diet increased energy-corrected milk production compared with the CG-BY diet (36.2 vs. 34.3 kg/d), but CG-BY enhanced feed conversion efficiency compared with the other 2 treatments. Although the S-BY-CM diet prolonged the eating and sorting of small particles, neither of the dietary treatments affected chewing activity or ruminal pH 4 h after feeding. Furthermore, both diets containing BY contributed to an increase in milk fat content in comparison to the CON group. Additionally, the CG-BY and S-BY-CM diets demonstrated better performance than the CON diet in terms of human-edible feed conversion efficiency for protein and energy. The results indicated that S-BY-CM can completely replace barley and corn grain in the diet of mid-lactating dairy cows exposed to heat-stress conditions without any negative effect on production and ruminal pH. Anthracene belongs to the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) consisting of benzene rings, unusually highly stable through more π-electrons and localized π-bond in entire rings. Aqueous-phase anthracene adsorption using carbon-based materials such as biochar is ineffective. In this paper, carbon dots (CDs) derived from the acid treatment of coconut shell biochar (CDs/MCSB) decorated with chitosan (CS) are successfully synthesized and applied for anthracene removal from aqueous solutions. The h-CDs/MCSB exhibited fast adsorption of anthracene with significant sorption capacity (Q max  = 49.26 mg g -1 ) with 95 % removal efficiency at 60 min. The study suggested chemisorption dominated monolayer anthracene adsorption onto h-CDs/MCSB, where a significant role was played by ion-exchange. Density Functional Theory (DFT) suggested the anthracene adsorption was dominated by the electrostatic interactions and delocalized electron, induced by higher polarizability of functional groups on the surface of hybrid CDs/MCSB assisted by chitosan (h-CDs/MCSB). In addition, the aromatic structure of CDs/MCSB and high polarizability of functional groups provided the strong interactions between benzene rings of anthracene and hybrid adsorbent-assisted multiple π-bond through delocalized π-bond and polarization-induced H-bond interactions. The presence of carboxylic and sulfonic groups on the CDs/MCSB surface also contributed to the effective adsorption of anthracene was confirmed by the fluorescence spectra. The results showed that the hybrid adsorbent was an effective material for removing PAHs, usually difficult to remove from water owing to the presence of benzene rings in their structures. The female reproductive tract (FRT), including the uterus and oviduct (Fallopian tube), is responsible for maintaining an optimal microenvironment for reproductive processes, such as gamete activation and transportation, sperm capacitation, fertilization, and early embryonic and fetal development. The mucosal surface of the FRT may be exposed to pathogens and sexually transmitted microorganisms due to the opening of the cervix during mating. Pathogens and endotoxins may also reach the oviduct through the peritoneal fluid. To maintain an optimum reproductive environment while recognizing and killing pathogenic bacterial and viral agents, the oviduct and uterus should be equipped with an efficient and rigorously controlled immune system. Ovarian sex steroids can affect epithelial cells and underlying stromal cells, which have been shown to mediate innate and adaptive immune responses. This, in turn, protects against potential infections while maintaining an optimal milieu for reproductive events, highlighting the homeostatic involvement of ovarian sex steroids and reproductive epithelial cells. This article will discuss how ovarian sex steroids affect the immune reactions elicited by the epithelial cells of the non-pregnant uterus and oviduct in the bovine, murine, and human species. This experiment was designed to investigate the effects of feeding diets with different fiber content and forage particle size on the performance, health, nutrient digestion, rumen fermentation, and behavioral and sorting activity of Holstein dairy calves kept under elevated environmental temperature. Sixty weaned Holstein female calves (age = 96.7 ± 7.62 days old; body weight = 82.4 ± 10.4 kg) were randomly assigned to one of 4 treatments arranged in a 2-by-2 factorial design in a 70-day experiment. Dietary forage content (moderate, 22.5%; or high, 40.0% on DM basis) and alfalfa hay particle size (short, 4.39 mm; or long, 7.22 mm as geometric mean) were the experimental factors, resulting in the following combinations: (1) high-fiber (HF) diets with forage-to-concentrate ratio of 40:60 and long particle-sized alfalfa hay (LPS; HF-LPS); (2) HF diets with short particle-sized alfalfa hay (SPS; HF-SPS); (3) moderate-fiber (MF) diets with forage-to-concentrate ratio of 22.5:77.5 with LPS (MF-LPS); and (4) MF diets with SPS (MF-SPS). The temperature-humidity index averaged 73.0 ± 1.86, indicating that weaned calves experienced a moderate extent of heat stress. Fiber level and AH particle size interacted and affected dry matter intake, with the greatest intake (4.83 kg/d) observed in MF-SPS-fed calves. Final body weight was greater in calves receiving MF vs. HF diets (164 vs. 152 kg; p < 0.01). Respiration rate decreased when SPS vs. LPS AH was included in HF but not MF diet. Lower rectal temperature was recorded in calves fed MF vs. HF diet. Digestibility of dry matter and crude protein was greater in calves fed MF than HF diets, resulting in lower ruminal pH (6.12 vs. 6.30; p = 0.03). Fiber digestibility was greater in calves fed SPS compared with those fed LPS alfalfa hay. Feeding HF compared with MF diet increased acetate but lowered propionate molar proportions. The inclusion of SPS vs. LPS alfalfa hay decreased lying time in HF diet (920 vs. 861 min; p < 0.01). Calves fed MF vs. HF diets spent less time eating but more time lying, which is likely indicative of better animal comfort. Dietary fiber level and forage particle size interacted and affected sorting against 19 mm particles, the extent of which was greater in HF-SPS diet. Overall, dietary fiber level had a stronger effect than forage particle size on the performance of weaned calves exposed to a moderate degree of heat stress as feeding MF vs. HF diet resulted in greater feed intake, final body weight, structural growth measures, nutrient digestion, as well as longer lying behavior. The inclusion of SPS alfalfa hay in MF diets increased feed consumption.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of corn processing index (CPI)-particularly at 70% and 85%-in starter feed in combination with the provision of forage, either alfalfa hay (AH) or wheat straw (WS), on feed intake, growth performance, rumen pH, and blood metabolites of dairy calves. Forty-eight male Holstein calves (43.0 ± 1.5 kg body weight) were randomly assigned (n = 12 calves per treatment) to one of four dietary treatments: (1) a textured starter diet containing 70% CPI and AH (70CPIAH), (2) a textured starter feed containing 70% CPI combined with WS (70CPIWS), (3) a textured starter feed containing 85% CPI and AH (85CPIAH), (4) a textured starter feed containing 85% CPI combined with WS (85CPIWS). Intake of starter feed (TMR) and milk was individually monitored and recorded daily, while body weight was measured weekly. On days 30 and 65, blood samples were collected from all calves 3 h after morning feeding. No interaction was detected between the CPI of starter feed diets and forage provision for starter intake, dry matter intake (DMI), metabolizable energy intake (MEI), feed efficiency (FE), average daily gain (ADG), and body weight (BW). The preweaning and overall DMI, preweaning, postweaning and overall FE and ADG, preweaning and overall starter intake, preweaning and overall ME intake, and postweaning and overall BW were greater for calves fed 85CPI than those fed 70CPI starter diets. Postweaning and overall ADG and postweaning FE were greater in calves fed WS than those fed AH. Body length and hip width were greater for calves offered 85CPI than in fed 70CPI. Wheat straw supplementation increased rumen pH at day 65 in calves fed 70CPI, but not in those fed 85CPI. No interaction was found between the CPI in the starter feed diet and the forage source for starter intake and DMI, MEI, FE, and BW. This study examined the impact of two corn processing methods (steam-flaked (SFC) vs. ground) combined with two weaning ages (50 or 75 days) on calf performance, blood metabolites, rumen fermentation, nutrient digestion, and behavior. The study involved 48 three-day-old Holstein calves, with an average body weight of 41.4 ± 2.2 kg. The experimental design was a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement, resulting in four treatment groups: SFC50 (SFC and weaning at 50 days), SFC75 (SFC and weaning at 75 days), GC50 (ground corn and weaning at 50 days), and GC75 (ground corn and weaning at 75 days). Calves were given whole milk at 4 L/ day from day 3-15 and 7 L/ day from day 16 to either 43 or 68, depending on weaning age. Weaning occurred between days 44 and 50 for early-weaned calves and between days 69 and 75 for late-weaned calves. The study lasted until calves were 93 days old. The starter ration consisted of soybean meal, corn grain, 5% chopped wheat straw and premix. Results indicated that the SFC-based starter feed improved calf performance and nutrient digestion, as evidenced by increased weight gain, dry matter, crude protein, and neutral detergent fiber digestibility. Calves fed the SFC-based starter diet had lower blood albumin and urea N concentrations, while blood total protein and globulin concentrations were higher, especially in early-weaned calves. No significant changes in rumen pH and ammonia-N concentration were observed. In addition, the SFC starter feed resulted in higher volatile fatty acids concentration and longer feeding time in weaned calves compared to ground corn. The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of partial replacement of inorganic minerals (IM) with trace minerals in advance chelate components form in starter diets for calves of different birth weights on performance, health, and behavior of Holstein calves. Fifty-two calves were assigned to 1 of 4 treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with two mineral sources (IM or advanced chelated minerals (ACMS)) and two birth weights (low or normal birth weight; LBW or NBW). Calves were weaned on d 56 and remained until d 71 of the study. Results showed that NBW calves had higher feed intake, withers and hip height, larger heart girth and lower fecal score than LBW calves throughout the study. Calves receiving ACMS tended to have higher feed intake, larger hip width, lower eye and nose scores, and lower rectal temperature throughout the study than IM calves. In addition, ACMS calves had larger abdominal girths at d 56 of the study compared to IM calves. Interactions between birth weights and mineral sources for preweaning average daily gain (ADG) and weaning and final BW showed that ACMS supplementation improved ADG and BW in LBW calves. Non-nutritive oral behavior was lower in ACMS calves compared to IM calves during all periods. Overall, ACMS feeding decreased non-nutritive oral behavior and improved calf health status during the study. This paper investigates an event-triggered control method for a class of nonlinear multi-agent systems, in which a group of followers surround a group of leaders. Dynamics of leaders and followers are assumed to be heterogeneous and to have unknown parameters. To deal with this problem, some adaptive laws and also controllers including event-triggered estimator of leaders' geometric center are proposed. In order to reduce some dispensable data exchange among the follower agents and save the limited communication resources, event-triggered control protocols are used to attain better performance of resources. The proposed control scheme guarantees that all the closed loop signals are globally bounded and surrounding error converges toward a compact set, exponentially. Moreover, Zeno behavior is also excluded under certain conditions. The present study investigated the effects of adding wheat straw treated with exogenous fibrolytic enzymes (EFE) and a probiotic supplement to finely ground starters on growth performance, rumen fermentation, behavior, digestibility, and health of dairy calves. A total of 48 Holstein dairy calves (39.8 ± 1.67 kg body weight) were randomly assigned to one of 4 nutritional treatments (n = 12 calves per treatment). The experiment was conducted in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments consisting of two diets with or without EFE-treated wheat straw (2 g/day/calf) and diets with or without probiotics (2 g/day/calf). All calves were weaned on day 63 and remained in the study until day 84. The addition of EFE to wheat straw had no effect on starter feed intake, increased neutral detergent fiber (NDF) digestibility and recumbency, but decreased average daily gain (ADG) after weaning (240 g/d). The addition of probiotics to the diet had no effect on starter feed intake, improved feed efficiency, ADG (150 g/d), final weight (11.3 kg), and NDF digestibility, and decreased the ratio of acetate to propionate in the rumen. Early life milk intake can influence the survival and future productivity of replacement heifers. The present study determined the effects of different amounts of milk through step-up/step-down or conventional feeding methods on the performance of dairy calves. Thirty-nine Holstein calves (18 male and 21 female) were used in a completely randomized design. Calves were randomly allocated to 1 of 3 treatments: (1) conventional milk feeding (CONV; 4.5 L/d of milk from d 1 to 50 and 2 L/d of milk at d 51 and 52 of the study; total milk intake = 229 L); (2) low milk intake with step-up/step-down method (L-SUSD, 4 L/d of milk from d 1 to 10, 6 L/d from d 11 to 20, 8 L/d from d 21 to 30, 6 L/d from d 31 to 40, 4 L/d from d 41 to 50, and 2 L/d milk at d 51 and 52 of the study, total milk intake = 284 L); (3) high milk intake with step-up/step-down method (H-SUSD, 6 L/d of milk from d 1 to 10, 8 L/d from d 11 to 20, 10 L/d from d 21 to 30, 8 L/d from d 31 to 40, 6 L/d from d 41 to 50, 4 L/d milk at d 51, and 2 L/d milk at d 52 of the study, total milk intake = 386 L). All calves were weaned at d 52 and followed until d 70. Performance data (every week), skeletal growth (d 52 and 70), and ruminal fermentation parameters and digestibility (d 35, 55, and 70) were analyzed as repeated measurements with PROC MIXED of SAS version 9.3 (SAS Institute Inc.). A treatment × time interaction was observed for total dry matter intake (TDMI) as follows: TDMI differed among all treatments where H-SUSD > L-SUSD > CONV from d 11 to 38 of study, greater for H-SUSD versus other treatments from d 3 to 10 and d 39 to 70 of study. Starter feed intake and average daily gain (ADG) were greater in H-SUSD calves than in CONV calves, and L-SUSD treatment was intermediate for those traits. The H-SUSD calves tended to have greater body weight (BW) and lower feed efficiency than calves fed CONV or L-SUSD treatments. The treatments did not affect structural growth parameters, except for hip width, which tended to be greater in H-SUSD calves than CONV calves. Regardless of treatments, ADG, starter feed intake, BW, and body measurements increased as calves aged, whereas feed efficiency increased from d 1 to 52 of study and decreased from d 52 to 70 of study. The treatments had no effect on digestibility, rumen parameters, or fecal score. Overall, in calves that were weaned at 52 d and fed milk 3 times daily, the high milk intake (386 L) through the SUSD method did not increase diarrhea or decrease digestibility but increased starter feed intake and ADG., (The Authors. Background: In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in using high quantities of milk or milk replacer (MR) in heat-stressed calves to alleviate the negative effects of high environmental temperatures on their performance. However, observations have indicated a decline in growth performance in the weaning and post-weaning period, which might be optimized with increasing total solids (TS) in milk and weaning age. This study aims to optimize the effects of higher quantities of milk on late weaned calves' performance by increasing TS concentration or delivery route in summer conditions., Method: Forty-eight newborn Holstein calves were used in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with the factors of pre-weaning total plane of milk (PM) intake (low vs. high) and milk TS content (12% vs. 17%). The treatments were (1) low PM (LPM) intake with 12% TS (TS intake = 45.9 kg), (2) LPM intake with 17% TS (TS intake = 65.1 kg), (3) high PM (HPM) intake with 12% TS (TS intake = 63.7 kg); and (4) HPM intake with 17% TS (TS intake = 90.3 kg). Calves were weaned at d 83, and the study was terminated at d 103 of age. Performance data (every 10 day), skeletal growth (d 80 and 100), ruminal fermentation parameters (d 48 and 91), and behavioral measurements (d 69, 70, 93 and 94) were analyzed as repeated measurements with PROC MIXED of SAS 9.4 (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC)., Results: Calves receiving HPM consumed less PMR from d 44 to 83 of age, but they had higher ADG from d 24 to 53 of age compared to those fed LPM (PM × age, P < 0.001). In addition, calves receiving milk with 17% TS had lower PMR intake from d 14 to 83 of age, but greater ADG from d 34 to 53 compared to those receiving milk with 12% TS (TS × age, P < 0.001). Calves that received HPM had greater skeletal growth parameters compared to LPM-fed calves, with a similar effect evident for calves fed milk with 17% TS compared with those fed milk with 12% TS. Calves receiving milk with 17% TS had greater fecal scores and diarrhea occurrence than those fed milk with 12% TS in HPM, but not LPM., Conclusions: Increasing PM and milk TS concentration improved growth in summer-exposed calves as demonstrated by increased pre-weaning ADG, pre- and post-weaning BW, and structural growth., (© 2021. This paper develops the stability analysis for linear bilateral teleoperation systems exposed to communication constraints and multirate samplers. Dynamics of the master and slave robots are assumed to be continuous-time with discrete-time controllers. The proposed multirate design guarantees the exponential stability of the teleoperation system over a communication networks. Different sampling rates are imposed on position/velocity signals in both master and slave sides and by exerting input-delay approach, the multirate dynamics is transformed into a continuous-time system. Sufficient Krasovskii-based stability criteria are provided to preserve the exponential stability of the linear discrete-time system for asynchronously sampling intervals and update rates. This analysis is formulated as a convex optimization problem in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMI) to calculate the longest interval between two successive sampling periods. The proposed multirate approach demonstrates that selecting adequate intervals for samplers and proper update rates for actuators has a considerable effect on the stability of the system. This study investigated the effects of substituting beet pulp (BP) for different grains (barley or corn) in the diet of high-producing dairy cows on intake, feeding behavior, nutrient digestibility, ruminal fermentation, milk production, and feed conversion efficiency. Eight second-parity Holstein cows (62 ± 2 d in milk; milk yield = 54 ± 1.2 kg/d; body weight = 624 ± 26; all mean ± SE) were used in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design during 4 periods of 21 d. Cows were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 treatments that were a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of 2 grain sources (corn or barley) and 2 levels of BP inclusion [5 or 15% of dry matter (DM)] in the diet: (1) barley-based diet with BP at 5% of dietary DM; (2) barley-based diet with BP at 15% of dietary DM; (3) corn-based diet with BP at 5% of dietary DM; and (4) corn-based diet with BP at 15% of dietary DM. The increasing amount of BP in the diet was at the expense of decreasing an equal proportion of grain (barley or corn). All diets were high in concentrates (65% of diet DM) and formulated to have similar concentrations of energy and protein. The portion of feedstuffs that is potentially able to be consumed by humans is known as human edible. Accordingly, human-edible protein (HEP) and human-edible energy (HEE) inputs were calculated according to the recommended potential human-edible fraction of each dietary ingredient, and HEP and HEE outputs were determined as the amount of gross energy and true protein in the milk. Feed conversion efficiency (FCE) for HEP and HEE were expressed as output per input of each variable, whereas FCE for the production of fat-corrected milk (FCM) and energy-corrected milk (ECM) were expressed as the amount of each variable per DM intake. Results showed that substituting BP for grain did not affect DM intake, crude protein intake, or nutrient digestibility, whereas starch intake (5.70 vs. 7.43 kg/d for the low-BP vs. high-BP diets, respectively), HEP (2.34 and 1.92 kg/d), and HEE (186 and 147 MJ of gross energy/d) decreased. Treatments did not affect sorting and chewing activities, but increasing BP in the diet increased ruminal pH at 4 h after feeding (6.20 vs. 6.39) and milk fat content (2.92 vs. 3.15%). Similarly, FCE for ECM production (1.44 vs. 1.54) as well as FCE for HEE (0.653 vs. 0.851) and HEP (0.629 vs. 0.702) were greater in high-BP diets compared with low-BP diets. The interaction of BP and grain sources significantly affected FCE for ECM production, where improvements were more evident when BP was substituted for barley than for corn. The improvement in FCE for HEE was greater when BP was substituted for barley (0.236) rather than corn (0.161). In conclusion, the substitution of BP for barley or corn grains in high-concentrate diets of high-producing cows decreased starch intake, increased ruminal pH at 4 h after feeding, and improved FCE for FCM production. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of an enzymatically hydrolyzed cottonseed protein (HCSP) as a peptide source on performance, blood metabolites, gastrointestinal development, and intestinal microbes. Forty-eight newborn Holstein calves were randomly assigned to 1 of the 4 dietary treatments including 0, 2, 4, and 6% of HCSP (dry matter basis). All calves received the same amount of pasteurized whole milk, weaned on d 56 of the experiment, and the study was concluded on d 70. Data were analyzed using PROC MIXED in SAS (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC) as a randomized complete block design with linear and quadratic contrasts. Results showed that increased amount of HCSP linearly decreased the starter intake during the postweaning (d 57 to 70) and overall period (d 1 to 70). In addition, when dietary HCSP increased during the overall period, average daily gain tended to linearly decrease. All skeletal growth variables also linearly decreased as dietary HCSP increased at the end of the study, except for body length, which did not differ among the treatments. Serum cortisol concentration was higher in calves supplemented with 6% of HCSP at weaning and at the end of the study. This indicates that these calves may have experienced a stressful condition compared with calves in other treatments. Total antioxidant capacity was quadratically affected by HCSP supplementation; calves fed 2 and 4% of HCSP diets had the highest total antioxidant capacity, whereas calves fed 0 and 6% HCSP diets had lower total antioxidant capacity at weaning and at end of the study. Calves supplemented with 6% HCSP had lower empty reticulo-rumen and omasum weights and rumen wall thickness compared with calves in other treatments at the end of the study. In conclusion, supplementation of HCSP at the rate of 2% of starter diet enhanced antioxidant status without any detrimental effects on the performance and metabolic status of calves, whereas greater inclusion rates impaired starter intake and growth of calves, and exposed them to a stressful status., (Copyright © 2020 American Dairy Science Association. Context: Experiencing early-life adversity plays a key role in the development of mood disorders in adulthood. Experiencing adversities during early life period negatively affects brain development. Sex steroids such as progesterone affect the brain structure and functions and subsequently affects behaviour. Objective: We assess the antidepressant-like effect of progesterone in a mouse model of maternal separation (MS) stress, focussing on its anti-neuroinflammatory and antioxidative effects. Materials and methods: NMRI mice were treated with progesterone (10, 50, and 100 mg/kg, i.p., respectively) for 14 days. Valid behavioural tests including forced swimming test (FST), splash test and open field test (OFT) were used. Quantitative reverse transcription-PCR (qRT-PCR) was used for evaluation of genetic expression in the hippocampus. Antioxidant capacity was assessed by the FRAP method and the level of malondialdehide by TBA. Results: MS provoked depressive-like behaviour in mice. Treatment of MS mice with progesterone increased the grooming activity time in the splash test and decreased the immobility time in the FST. In addition, progesterone decreased the expression of inflammatory genes related to neuroinflammation (IL-1β, TNF-α, TLR4 and NLRP3) as well as increased the antioxidant capacity and decreased the lipid peroxidation (MDA) in the hippocampus. Discussion and Conclusion: Administration of progesterone significantly mitigated the negative effects of MS on behaviours relevant to depressive-like behaviour as well as attenuated neuro-immune response and oxidative stress in the hippocampus of MS mice. In this context, we conclude that progesterone, at least partially, via attenuation of oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, exerts antidepressant-like effects.

In this paper, finite time rigidity-based formation maneuvering control of single integrator multiagent systems is considered. The target formation graph is assumed to be minimally and infinitesimally rigid, and the desired group velocity is considered to be available only to a subset of the agents. A distributed nonsmooth velocity estimator is used for each agent to estimate the desired group velocity in finite time. Using Lyapunov and input to state stability notions, a finite time distance-based formation maneuvering controller is presented and it is proved that by using the controller, agents converge to the target formation and track the desired group velocity in finite time. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the designed controller is implementable in local coordinate frames of the agents. Simulation results are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

This study evaluated the interactive effects of forage provision on performance, nutritional behavior, apparent digestibility, rumen fermentation, and blood metabolites of dairy calves when corn grains with different fermentability were used. Sixty 3-d-old Holstein calves were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. Dietary treatments were (1) steam-flaked (SF) corn without alfalfa hay (AH) supplementation (SF-NO), (2) SF corn with AH supplementation (SF-AH), (3) cracked (CR) corn without AH supplementation (CR-NO), and (4) CR corn with AH supplementation (CR-AH). All calves received the same amount of pasteurized whole milk and weaned on d 56 of the experiment; the study was terminated on d 70. Steam-flaked corn contained higher amounts of gelatinized starch in comparison with cracked corn (44.1 vs. 12.5% of total starch, respectively). Starter intake was not affected by corn processing methods or AH provision during the pre- or postweaning periods. However, we noted an interaction between corn processing methods and forage supplementation for starter intake during d 31 to 50 of the experiment, where calves fed on SF-AH starter had greater starter intake than those fed SF-NO starter, but the starter intake was not different between CR-NO and CR-AH fed calves. Furthermore, AH increased average daily gain (ADG) of calves fed an SF-based diet but not in calves fed a CR-based diet during the preweaning and overall periods. Interaction between forage provision and time was significant for ADG and feed efficiency, as calves supplemented with forage had higher ADG (0.982 vs. 0.592, respectively) and feed efficiency compared with forage unsupplemented calves at the weaning week. Forage supplementation resulted in more stable ruminal condition compared with nonforage-fed calves, as evidenced by higher ruminal pH (5.71 vs. 5.29, respectively) at postweaning and lower non-nutritive oral behavior around weaning time (55 vs. 70.5 min, respectively). The concentration of blood β-hydroxybutyrate was also greater in calves supplemented with forage than in unsupplemented calves. Results of the present study indicated that performance response and skeletal growth were the same between 2 corn processing methods. In this paper, the surrounding control problem of a group of non-identical agents is considered, where a team of followers achieves an equidistant distributed formation to surround a team of moving leaders. An adaptive design method is presented for multi-agent systems where the dynamics of agents are supposed to be nonlinear with unknown parameters. First, an estimator for the center of the leaders is introduced. Then, two distributed adaptive controllers based on the estimated center are proposed for each follower. The stability and parameter convergence of the proposed protocols are shown by using algebraic graph theory and Lyapunov theory.
