Abstract

An International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) workshop was held at Sydney University, Australia, from 13 to 16 June 2017 and was attended by 97 scientists from 12 countries. The aim of the workshop was to investigate future drilling opportunities in the eastern Indian Ocean, southwestern Pacific Ocean, and the Indian and Pacific sectors of the Southern Ocean. The overlying regional sedimentary strata are underexplored relative to their Northern Hemisphere counterparts, and thus the role of the Southern Hemisphere in past global environmental change is poorly constrained. A total of 23 proposal ideas were discussed, with ∼ 12 of these deemed mature enough for active proposal development or awaiting scheduled site survey cruises. Of the remaining 11 proposals, key regions were identified where fundamental hypotheses are testable by drilling, but either site surveys are required or hypotheses need further development. Refinements are anticipated based upon regional IODP drilling in 2017/2018, analysis of recently collected site survey data, and the development of site survey proposals. We hope and expect that this workshop will lead to a new phase of scientific ocean drilling in the Australasian region in the early 2020s.

Abstract

Nearly a century after the first systematic study of the global ocean and seafloor by HMS Challenger (1871–1876), US scientists began to drill beneath the seafloor to unlock the secrets of the ~70% of Earth’s surface covered by the seas. Fifty years of scientific ocean drilling by teams of international partners has provided unparalleled advancements in Earth sciences. Here, we briefly review the history, impacts, and scientific achievements of five decades of coordinated scientific ocean drilling.

Abstract

"Exploring the Earth under the Sea brings to life the world’s largest and longest-lived geological research program, which has been drilling over many decades at many locations deep below the ocean floor to recover continuous cores of sediment and rock. Study of these materials has helped us understand how the Earth works now, how it has worked in the past and how it may work in the future. The cores are a wonderful source of information on the dynamic processes that form and reform the Earth, both beneath the ocean and on land. The results have revealed climate and oceanographic change on different time frames, the history of life in the sea and on land including global mass extinctions, the extraordinary story of the great masses of ‘extremophile’ microbes that live beneath the sea bed, the nature of the giant earthquakes and tsunami generated at the trenches where tectonic plates collide, and the nature of submarine volcanoes and metalliferous deposits. This book outlines the technology and enduring international partnerships that underlie the scientific ocean drilling accomplished by the first phase of IODP, currently involving 23 countries. It highlights the important role of Australian and New Zealand scientists in the program, and the great scientific benefits we have derived from our partnership since joining IODP in 2008. As well as the scientific summaries, there are personal accounts by shipboard scientists of how they found life at sea on two-month expeditions, working 12-hour shifts on a noisy drill ship."

Abstract

A major International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) workshop covering scientific ocean drilling in the southwest Pacific Ocean was held in Sydney, Australia, in late 2012. The workshop covered all fields of geoscience, and drilling targets in the area from the Equator to Antarctica. High-quality contributions and a positive and cooperative atmosphere ensured its success. The four science themes of the new IODP science plan were addressed. An additional resource-oriented theme considered possible co-investment opportunities involving IODP vessels. As a result of the workshop, existing proposals were revised and new ones written for the April 2013 deadline. Many of the proposals are broad and multidisciplinary in nature, hence broadening the scientific knowledge that can be produced by using the IODP infrastructure. This report briefly outlines the workshop and the related drilling plans.

Abstract

Among the greatest successes of the Ocean Drilling Program were the concerted drilling efforts and exciting results recovered from the Southern Ocean (SO) surrounding Antarctica. Scientific drilling in the SO and on the Antarctic margin has recovered material from hundreds of sites for scientific analysis. The dynamic nature of ice sheet development and ice/margin interactions through time has been observed, as has the role that the SO plays in the development and persistence of Antarctic glaciation. The SO has been documented as a sensitive mixing pool of global water masses that is at times a locus of high biological sedimentation. Also, the SO has been found to contain high‐resolution records of climate forcing and response, and as such it may hold clues to future climate.

23. Nature and origin of the submarine Albany canyons off southwest Australia

Abstract

The Albany canyons complex off southwest Australia extends 700 km from Cape Leeuwin to east of Esperance. The submarine canyons head on the uppermost continental slope and extend from there up to 90 km offshore, to the lowermost slope and onto the abyssal plain. Distributaries have transported shelf carbonate grains at least 150 km onto the abyssal plain. The largest canyons have cut down 1500-2000 m in places. In general, on the upper slope they have cut down into harder, older rocks: canyon walls are steep, canyon axes slope at up to 20°, and ancient structures control their orientation. On the lower slope the canyons generally have not eroded down into harder rocks: canyon walls are less steep, canyon axis slopes are lower, and the canyons are generally oriented downslope. The canyons have exposed Jurassic and younger sedimentary rocks: their nature, canyon morphology and information from seismic reflection profiles have helped us build an understanding of canyon history. Floodplain deposition rather than erosion occurred during Australia-Antarctic rifting in the Late Jurassic, so river canyons (possible precursors of marine canyons) were unlikely to have been cut. A transition from non-marine to shallow-marine sedimentation characterised Early Cretaceous deposition in the slowly developing rift of the Australo-Antarctic Gulf. Gradients were low and canyon cutting unlikely. Deep river canyons were probably cut during uplift and erosion immediately before the Santonian breakup from Antarctica and their paths probably controlled later marine canyons. Only with the onset of rapid sea-floor spreading and subsidence in the Middle Eocene (ca 43 Ma) did gradients steepen and major marine canyon cutting become possible. The major sea-level fall at the Middle/Late Eocene boundary (ca 40 Ma) may perhaps have accelerated canyon formation. Abstract

ODP Leg 189 was designed to test the hypothesis that opening of the Tasmanian Seaway and initiation of circumpolar circulation contributed to the thermal isolation of Antarctica, leading to the development of initial ice-sheet and oceanic thermohaline circulation. The clay assemblages of the Tasmanian region contain the traces of two tectonic stages associated with ocean opening south of the south Tasman Rise near the Palaeocene–Eocene boundary and strike-slip activity between the western Tasmanian land-bridge and Antarctica during the Late Eocene. Earliest Oligocene clays indicate that cooling of Antarctic margins and activity of western boundary circulation progressed with the regional subsidence.

Abstract

The Lord Howe Rise (LHR) is a large, complex, and poorly studied fragment of thinned continental crust submerged 750–3000 m beneath the oligotrophic waters of the central Tasman Sea (Figure 1). Deep seismic profiles taken during recent cruises in the region have revealed an intriguing phenomenon: the eastern slope of the LHR has a prominent and extensive bottom simulating reflector (BSR) that cross‐cuts lithology at 0.65–0.75 s two‐way travel time (twt) [Exon et al., 1998; Lafoy et al., 1998]. Given best estimates for sonic velocity (1600 m/s) and thermal gradients (0.9+0.04°C/m) in sediment on the LHR, predicted temperatures and pressures at the depth of the BSR lie on the CH4‐CH4 hydrate‐seawater equilibrium curve. Thus, the BSR on the LHR most likely represents an interface between gas hydrate and free gas [e.g., Dickens et al., 1997]. Although BSRs and gas hydrates are increasingly found in the marine realm, the LHR discovery has raised an interesting conceptual problem c oncerning the origin of gas hydrates.

Abstract

A geological and geophysical study of active submarine volcanoes offshore of Epi Island and between Epi and Efate Islands, New Hebrides Arc, has delineated five large, mainly submerged, calderas over a 90-km length of the arc. These vary in diameter from 15 to 30 km, and the two northern calderas have active post-caldera basaltic cones. Karua volcano lies on the submerged northern rim of the caldera northwest of Tongoa, and has periodically erupted medium-K20 basaltic andesite in this century. Submarine cones Epia, Epib, and Epic are aligned east-west and spaced 3.5 km apart on the rim of the northernmost caldera. Rocks dredged from these cones include basalt, dacite, and cognate gabbroic inclusions with magmatic affinities similar to those of the Karua lavas. A pronounced bimodal Si02 content is noted for the large caldera volcanoes in the New Hebrides and other oceanic arcs. This bimodality has important implications for physical processes of magma differentiation within arc-volcano magma chambers. The bulk of the uppermost level of the surficial (and seafloor) dacite pumiceous pyroclastics in the area of northeast Epi and Tongoa was derived from cataclysmic eruptions of more than one of the now largely submerged calderas.

Abstract

We present and discuss a few fission track data, and microstructural observations, from rock samples dredged along the western and southwestern continental margin of Tasmania. The results allow assessing the thermal and tectonic regimes that were active prior to and during the margin creation. The different ages, as provided by fission tracks, and deformational styles, as evidenced from microstructures, are then tentatively correlated with the two main rifting episodes, in Late Jurassic–Cretaceous times and Eocene–Oligocene respectively, deduced from kinematical reconstructions, that have led to the present- day southern margin of Tasmania.
