With a growing population of older persons globally, the need for mainstream assistive technology (AT) as well as assistive technology specifically intended for older persons is on the increase. The association between age and functional limitations strongly indicates a growing demand due the current demographic development. There was however until recently limited data that can describe the situation, monitor development and compare between countries and populations. Quality data is essential for developing regional, national and international responses to current and future need for AT globally. The Global Report on Assistive Technology (GReAT) was launched on 16th May 2022 and highlights both substantial gaps in provision of AT and AT related services globally and in particular in low- and middle-income countries. As part of the process leading up to the GReAT, World Health Organization and partners developed the "rapid Assistive Technology Assessment" (rATA) survey to enable data collection that for the first time can provide estimates of AT use and need in a global perspective. The purpose of this presentation is to present key indicators from rATA among older persons in the countries that participated in the global data collection.

The national, representative study on living conditions among people with disabilities was carried out in Uganda in 2018 - 2019. The data also includes a sample of non­ disabled people, providing a basis for comparison between disabled and non-disabled. The partners who implemented the study were the National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda (NUDIPU), Makerere University, School of Social Science and SINTEF Digital. Important collaborating partners have been Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, the responsible ministry for disability in Uganda, and the Ministry of Education and Sports. The study was funded by the Atlas Alliance on behalf of Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD). The study is part of a series of similar studies that have been implemented in southern Africa and Nepal, characterized by a strong involvement of the disability movement and relevant ministries in the respective countries. The current study adds to a comprehensive data base about individuals with disabilities and their households in sub-Saharan Africa that provides unique insights into the level of living among persons with disabilities and an opportunity for comparison between countries and between regions. Purpose: To address the data gap on efforts to assess use of assistive technology among children with disability in sub-Saharan Africa. Contribute towards efforts examining access to assistive technologies in sub-Saharan Africa. Materials and methods: The paper uses data from the 2017 survey on Living conditions among persons with disabilities in Malawi and the 2015-16 Malawi Demographic and Health survey to address the objective of the study. The two datasets were statistically matched through random hot deck technique, by integrating the two datasets using randomly selected units from a subset of all available data donors. Results: Results indicate that statistical matching technique produces a composite dataset with an uncertainty value of 2.2%. An accuracy assessment test of the technique also indicates that the marginal distribution of use of assistive technology in the composite dataset is similar to that of the donor dataset with an Overlap index value of close to 1 (Overlap = 0.997). Conclusions: The statistical matching procedure does enable generation of good data in data constrained contexts. In the current study, this approach enabled measurement of access to assistive products among children with disabilities, in situations where the variables of interest have not been jointly observed. Such a technique can be valuable in mining secondary data, the collection of which may have been funded from different sources and for different purposes. This is of significance for the efficient use of current and future data sets, allowing new questions to be asked and addressed by locally based researchers in poor settings.

Background: While it is widely assumed that disability, poverty and health are closely linked, research falls short of fully understanding the link. One approach to analysing the links between disability and poverty is through the concept of structural violence, referring to social structures that contribute to the impoverishment of individuals or communities. These structures can be political, ecological, legal and economic, among others.Objective: To explore structural violence and how it affects families of children with cerebral palsy among the Tonga ethnic group living in poor rural communities of Binga in Zimbabwe.Method: This is a longitudinal, qualitative and ethnographic study. Data were collected over a period of eight years from 2005 to 2013. Data collection techniques were in-depth interviews, participant observation and focus group discussions. Purposive sampling was used to recruit 53 informants.Results: Structural violence was noted through four themes: internal displacement and development, food and politics, water and sanitation, and social services. Poverty was noted in the form of unemployment, lack of education, healthcare, food and shelter. The concept of structural violence inflicted social suffering on the informants. Politics played a major role in activities such as food withdrawal, lack of water, development and allocation of local resources to ‘the people of the city’, leaving the informants struggling with care.Conclusion: Political and economic forces have structured risks and created a situation of extreme human suffering. The capabilities approach brings out the challenges associated with cerebral palsy in the context of development challenges.

Individuals with impairments are encouraged into higher education. However, their experience of transitioning from higher education to work has received less attention. The aim of this article is to describe factors influencing the transition from higher education to work for recently qualified occupational therapists with impairments. This study is part of a larger international ENOTHE project. Data was collected with an online survey developed at Brunel University and Trinity University College and translated/adapted to Norwegian conditions by the authors of this article. All 688 OTs who graduated in 2008-2013 and were members of the Norwegian OT association received the survey, resulting in 49 included responses. Data was collected in May/June 2014 and analysed statistically with SPSS v.22 and using thematic analysis. The majority, 86 prosent, report having an unseen impairment and 55 prosent rate the transition to work as easy. Factors that have an impact on the transition are disclosure of impairment, access to adaptions and strategies at work and attitudes in the workplace. The results suggest a relational influence between person and environment on the transition from higher education to work. © Norsk Ergoterapeutforbund 2017

This report is from the National study on living conditions among people with disabilities carried out in Nepal in 2014-2015. The study was carried out as a household survey with two-stage stratified sampling, including a screening/listing procedure using the Washington Group on Disability Statistics 6 questions, one Household questionnaire administered to households with (Case HHs) and without disabled members (Control HHs), one Individual Case questionnaire administered to individuals who were found to qualify as being disabled in the screening (Case individuals), and an Individual Control questionnaire administered to matched non-disabled individuals in the Control HHs (Control individuals). The study covers a range of indicators on level of living, such as socioeconomic indicators, economic activity, income, ownership and infrastructure, health (including reproductive health), access to health information, access to services, education, access to information, social participation, and exposure to discrimination and abuse (see all questionnaires in Appendix). "Harvest control rules have become an important tool in modern fisheries management, and are increasingly adopted to provide continuity in management practices, to deal with uncertainty and ecosystem considerations, and to relieve management decisions from short-term political pressure. We provide the conceptual and institutional background for harvest control rules, a discussion of the structure of fisheries management, and brief introductions to harvest control rules in a selection of present day cases. The cases demonstrate that harvest control rules take different forms in different settings, yet cover only a subset of the full policy space. We conclude with views on harvest control rules in future fisheries management, both in terms of ideal and realistic developments. One major challenge for future fisheries management is closing the gap between ideas and practice."
