A noticeable magnetoresistive effect has been observed on ferromagnet/superconductor/ferromagnet (FSF) microbridges based on diluted ferromagnetic PdFe alloy containing as small as 1% magnetic atoms. Microstructuring of the FSF trilayers does not destroy the effect: the most pronounced curves were obtained on the smallest bridges of 6-8 um wide and 10-15 um long. Below the superconducting transition we are able to control the critical current of microbridges by switching between P and AP orientations of magnetizations of PdFe layers. The operation of FSF-bridge as a magnetic switch is demonstrated in several regimes providing significant voltage discrimination between digital states or remarkably low bit error rate., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Being encouraged by the interplay between topology, superconductivity and magnetism, we experimentally investigate charge transport through the interface between the Nb superconductor and the time-reversal symmetry breaking Weyl semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$. In addition to the proximity induced superconducting gap, we observe several subgap features, among which the most interesting is the prominent subgap zero-bias anomaly, absolutely stable against external magnetic fields up to the critical field of Nb. As the promising scenario for the zero-bias anomaly to appear in transport characteristics, we consider the proximity induced zero-energy Andreev bound states interfaced with the half-metallic Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ and influenced by the strong spin-orbit coupling and large Zeeman splitting.

We experimentally investigate charge transport through the interface between a niobium superconductor and a three-dimensional WTe$_2$ Weyl semimetal. In addition to classical Andreev reflection, we observe sharp non-periodic subgap resistance resonances. From an analysis of their positions, magnetic field and temperature dependencies, we can interpret them as an analog of Tomasch oscillations for transport along the topological surface state across the region of proximity-induced superconductivity at the Nb-WTe$_2$ interface. Observation of distinct geometrical resonances implies a specific transmission direction for carriers, which is a hallmark of the Fermi arc surface states., Comment: 5 pages, some misprints has been corrected

A range of technologies require the directed motion of nanoscale droplets on solid substrates. A way of realizing this effect is durotaxis, whereby a stiffness gradient of a substrate can induce directional motion without requiring an energy source. Here, we report on the results of extensive molecular dynamics investigations of droplets on a surface with varying stiffness. We find that durotaxis is enhanced by increasing the stiffness gradient and, also, by increased wettability of the substrate, in particular, when droplet size decreases. We anticipate that our study will provide further insights into the mechanisms of nanoscale directional motion.

We investigate charge transport through the junction between a niobium superconductor and the edge of a two-dimensional electron-hole bilayer, realized in an InAs/GaSb double quantum well. For the transparent interface with a superconductor, we demonstrate that the junction resistance is determined by the interlayer charge transfer near the interface. From an analysis of experimental $I-V$ curves we conclude that the proximity induced superconductivity efficiently couples electron and hole layers at low currents. The critical current demonstrates periodic dependence on the in-plane magnetic field, while it is monotonous for the field which is normal to the bilayer plane., Comment: 5 pages

We experimentally investigate transport through the side junction between a niobium superconductor and the mesa edge of a two-dimensional system, realized in an InAs/GaSb double quantum well with band inversion. We demonstrate, that different transport regimes can be achieved by variation of the mesa step. We observe anomalous behavior of Andreev reflection within a finite low-bias interval, which is invariant for both transport regimes. We connect this behavior with the transition from retro- (at low biases) to specular (at high ones) Andreev reflection channels in an InAs/GaSb double quantum well with band inversion., Comment: As accepted to JETP Letters, vol. 104, issue 1

Of the new types of cryoelectronic devices under development, including phase shifters, giant magnetoresistance switches, diodes, transistors, and memory cells, some are based on hybrid superconductor-normal metal or superconductor-ferromagnet films. Control of these devices is realized by means of pulses of voltage, light, or magnetic field. Spin-polarized current may be used to switch low-temperature devices, as in spin-electronic devices. In the superconducting layer, the current is dissipation less, which would bring large reduction of energy consumption. We demonstrate that mag-netic domain walls in bilayer niobium-permalloy stripes are shifted by electrical current along the stripe even at low tem-perature, with the niobium in the superconducting state. The wall motion in response to current pulses is quite different from that induced by a magnetic field pulses only. The effect could be used to create a new type of sequentially switched serial devices because of very high value of the wall velocity, which excides by many orders of magnitude the velocity of the wall moved with magnetic field pulses., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

We investigate electron transport through the interface between a niobium superconductor and the edge of a two-dimensional semimetal, realized in a 20~nm wide HgTe quantum well. Experimentally, we observe that typical behavior of a single Andreev contact is complicated by both a pronounced zero-bias resistance anomaly and shallow subgap resistance oscillations with $1/n$ periodicity. These results are demonstrated to be independent of the superconducting material and should be regarded as specific to a 2D semimetal in a proximity with a superconductor. We interpret these effects to originate from the Andreev-like correlated process at the edge of a two-dimensional semimetal., Comment: 5 pages

We experimentally investigate spin-polarized electron transport between two ferromagnetic contacts, placed at the edge of a two-dimensional electron system with band inversion. The system is realized in a narrow (8~nm) HgTe quantum well, the ferromagnetic side contacts are formed from a pre-magnetized permalloy film. In zero magnetic field, we find a significant edge current contribution to the transport between two ferromagnetic contacts. We experimentally demonstrate that this transport is sensitive to the mutual orientation of the magnetization directions of two 200~$\mu$m-spaced ferromagnetic leads. This is a direct experimental evidence on the spin-coherent edge transport over the macroscopic distances. Thus, the spin is extremely robust at the edge of a two-dimensional electron system with band inversion, confirming the helical spin-resolved nature of edge currents., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1410.0585

We experimentally investigate electron transport through the interface between a superconductor and the edge of a two-dimensional electron system with band inversion. The interface is realized as a tunnel NbN side contact to a narrow 8~nm HgTe quantum well. It demonstrates a typical Andreev behavior with finite conductance within the superconducting gap. Surprisingly, the conductance is modulated by a number of equally-spaced oscillations. The oscillations are present only within the superconducting gap and at lowest, below 1~K, temperatures. The oscillations disappear completely in magnetic fields, normal to the two-dimensional electron system plane. In contrast, the oscillations' period is only weakly affected by the highest, up to 14~T, in-plane oriented magnetic fields. We experimentally investigate spin-polarized electron transport between a permalloy ferromagnet and the edge of a two-dimensional electron system with band inversion, realized in a narrow, 8~nm wide HgTe quantum well. In zero magnetic field, we observe strong asymmetry of the edge potential distribution with respect to the ferromagnetic ground lead. This result indicates, that the helical edge channel, specific for the structures with band inversion even at the conductive bulk, is strongly coupled to the ferromagnetic side contact, possibly due to the effects of proximity magnetization. It allows selective and spin-sensitive contacting of helical edge states., Comment: As appear in JETP

The architecture of novel metallic mesostructures obtained via self-organization of growing nanowires has been investigated. Seashell, fungus and lotus leafshaped structures are reproducibly formed by programmable pulse current electrodeposition on porous membranes. The samples several millimeters in size are obtained. SEM investigation has revealed that the frame of the metallic seashell presents a hierarchical system with elements of fractal selfsimilarity at the nano- and microlevels. The frame is a volumetric multilayer net with conical bundles of nanowires as building blocks. The Pd-Ni nanowires have V-like branches and periodic bulges . TEM study showed that the nanowires consist of nanocrystallites dispersed in an amorphous matrix. Their sizes range from 4 to 15 nm. Local inhomogeneity of PdNi solid solution was observed. In perspective, the proposed technique can be used as a 3D printer for the purposeful synthesis of novel materials with complex quantum nano-architecture., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

We describe fabrication and testing of composite flux qubits combining Nb- and Al-based superconducting circuit technology. This hybrid approach to making qubits allows for employing pi-phase shifters fabricated using well-established Nb-based technology of superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor Josephson junctions. The important feature here is to obtain high interface transparency between Nb and Al layers without degrading sub-micron shadow mask. We achieve this by in-situ Ar etching using e-beam gun. Shadow-evaporated Al/AlOx/Al Josephson junctions with Nb bias pads show the expected current-voltage characteristics with reproducible critical currents. Using this technique, we fabricated composite Nb/Al flux qubits with Nb/CuNi/Nb pi-shifters and measured their magnetic field response. The observed offset between the field responses of the qubits with and without pi-junction is attributed to the pi phase shift. We experimentally investigate electron transport through the interface between a permalloy ferromagnet and the edge of a two-dimensional electron system with strong Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling. We observe strongly non-linear transport around zero bias at millikelvin temperatures. The observed nonlinearity is fully suppressed above some critical values of temperature, magnetic field, and current through the interface. We interpret this behavior as the result of spin accumulation at the interface and its current-induced absorption as a magnetization torque., Comment: 6 pages, minor corrections

The escape transition of a polymer "mushroom" (a flexible chain grafted to a flat non-adsorbing substrate surface in a good solvent) occurs when the polymer is compressed by a cylindrical piston of radius $R$, that by far exceeds the chain gyration radius. At this transition, the chain conformation abruptly changes from a two-dimensional self-avoiding walk of blobs (of diameter $H$, the height of the piston above the substrate) to a "flower conformation", i.e. stretched almost one-dimensional string of blobs (with end-to-end distance $\approx R$) and an "escaped" part of the chain, the "crown", outside the piston. The extension of this problem to the case of star polymers with $f$ arms is considered, assuming that the center of the star is grafted to the substrate. The question is considered whether under compression the arms escape all together, or whether there occurs an arm by arm escape under increasing compression. The free energy cost of confining a star polymer where $f$ flexible polymer chains containing $N$ monomeric units are tethered to a central unit in a slit with two parallel repulsive walls a distance $D$ apart is considered, for good solvent conditions. Also the parallel and perpendicular components of the gyration radius of the star polymer, and the monomer density profile across the slit are obtained. Theoretical descriptions via Flory theory and scaling treatments are outlined, and compared to numerical self-consistent field calculations (applying the Scheutjens-Fleer lattice theory) and to Molecular Dynamics results for a bead-spring model. It is shown that Flory theory and self-consistent field (SCF) theory yield the correct scaling of the parallel linear dimension of the star with $N$, $f$ and $D$, but cannot be used for estimating the free energy cost reliably. We demonstrate that the same problem occurs already for the confinement of chains in cylindrical tubes. We also briefly discuss the problem of a free or grafted star polymer interacting with a single wall, and show that the dependence of confining force on the functionality of the star is different for a star confined in a nanoslit and a star interacting with a single wall, which is due to the absence of a symmetry plane in the latter case., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, LaTeX, to appear in Soft Matter

By employing monomer-resolved computer simulations and analytical considerations based on polymer scaling theory, we analyze the conformations and interactions of multiarm star polymers strongly adsorbed on a smooth, two-dimensional plane. We find a stronger stretching of the arms as well as a stronger repulsive, effective interaction than in the three dimensional case. In particular, the star size scales with the number of arms $f$ as $\sim f^{1/4}$ and the effective interaction as $\sim f^{2}$, as opposed to $\sim f^{1/5}$ and $\sim f^{3/2}$, respectively, in three dimensions. Our results demonstrate the dramatic effect that geometric confinement can have on the effective interactions and the subsequent correlations of soft colloids in general, for which the conformation can be altered as a result of geometrical constraints imposed on them., Comment: 17 pages, LaTeX, 5 figures, to appear in Macromolecules

We use a Mach-Zehnder quantum Hall interferometer of a novel design to investigate the interference effects at fractional filling factors. Our device brings together the advantages of usual Mach-Zehnder and Fabry-Perot quantum Hall interferometers. It realizes the simplest-for-analysis Mach-Zehnder interference scheme, free from Coulomb blockade effects. By contrast to the standard Mach-Zehnder realization, our device does not contain an etched region inside the interference loop. For the first time for Mach-Zehnder interference scheme, the device demonstrates interference oscillations with $\Phi^*=e/e^*\Phi_0=\Phi_0/\nu$ periodicity at fractional filling factor 1/3. This result indicates that we observe clear evidence for fractionally charged quasiparticles from simple Aharonov-Bohm interference., Comment: as accepted to EPL

The kineticts of magnetization reversal of stripe-shaped permalloy-niobium hybrid nanofilms is studied in 6-300 K temperature range by means of magneto-optics visualization technique. The niobium influence on magnetic domain walls type and on magnetic domain structure of permalloy via the interface quality and via the distortion of stray fields is found. The memory effect, which is the superconducting niobium memory about an initial magnetic domain structure of permalloy at cooling below T_c, is found. The memory is razed only by hybrid heating over T_c.

As a continuation of work on metal and alloy "plants" synthesis on porous membranes by means of pulsed current electroplating volume metallic microstructures resembling such natural objects as shells, cabbage leaves, mushrooms are grown and presented in their modest elegance. Such structures are formed from PdNi and PdCo alloys as well as Ag, Cu and Ni in conditions defined by the shape of membrane pores and the parameters of the pulsed current. It is shown that the obtained complex structures are formed by layers of metallic nanowires as a result of their self-assembly while growing during the pulsed current electroplating process. Depending on the shape of the membrane and the regime of the pulsed current electroplating either one type of shell-like structures or various structures can be grown., Comment: 11pages, 10 figures

Integral equation theory is applied to a coarse-grained model of water to study potential of mean force between hydrophobic solutes. Theory is shown to be in good agreement with the available simulation data for methane-methane and fullerene-fullerene potential of mean force in water; the potential of mean force is also decomposed into its entropic and enthalpic contributions. Mode coupling theory is employed to compute self-diffusion coefficient of water, as well as diffusion coefficient of a dilute hydrophobic solute; good agreement with molecular dynamics simulation results is found.

A self-consistent field theory study of lock and key type interactions between sterically stabilized colloids in polymer solution is performed. Both the key particle and the lock cavity are assumed to have cylindrical shape, and their surfaces are uniformly grafted with polymer chains. The lock-key potential of mean force is computed for various model parameters, such as length of free and grafted chains, lock and key size matching, free chain volume fraction, grafting density, and various enthalpic interactions present in the system. The lock-key interaction is found to be highly tunable, which is important in the rapidly developing field of particle self-assembly.

The absorption of free linear chains in a polymer brush was studied with respect to chain size $L$ and compatibility $\chi$ with the brush by means of Monte Carlo (MC) simulations and Density Functional Theory (DFT) / Self-Consistent Field Theory (SCFT) at both moderate, $\sigma_g = 0.25$, and high, $\sigma_g = 1.00$, grafting densities using a bead-spring model. Different concentrations of the free chains $0.0625 \le \phi_o \le 0.375$ are examined. Contrary to the case of $\chi = 0$ when all species are almost completely ejected by the polymer brush irrespective of their length $L$, for $\chi < 0$ we find that the degree of absorption (absorbed amount) $\Gamma(L)$ undergoes a sharp crossover from weak to strong ($\approx 100%$) absorption, discriminating between oligomers, $1\le L\le 8$, and longer chains. For a moderately dense brush, $\sigma_g = 0.25$, the longer species, $L > 8$, populate predominantly the deep inner part of the brush whereas in a dense brush $\sigma_g = 1.00$ they penetrate into the "fluffy" tail of the dense brush only. Gyration radius $R_g$ and end-to-end distance $R_e$ of absorbed chains thereby scale with length $L$ as free polymers in the bulk. Using both MC and DFT/SCFT methods for brushes of different chain length $32 \le N \le 256$, we demonstrate the existence of unique {\em critical} value of compatibility $\chi = \chi^{c}<0$. For $\chi^{c}(\phi_o)$ the energy of free chains attains the {\em same} value, irrespective of length $L$ whereas the entropy of free chain displays a pronounced minimum. At $\chi^{c}$ all density profiles of absorbing chains with different $L$ intersect at the same distance from the grafting plane. The penetration/expulsion kinetics of free chains into the polymer brush after an instantaneous change in their compatibility $\chi$ displays a rather rich behavior. We find three distinct regimes of penetration kinetics of free chains regarding the length $L$: I ($1\le L\le 8$), II ($8 \le L \le N$), and III ($L > N$), in which the time of absorption $\tau$ grows with $L$ at a different rate. During the initial stages of penetration into the brush one observes a power-law increase of $\Gamma \propto t^\alpha$ with power $\alpha \propto -\ln \phi_o$ whereby penetration of the free chains into the brush gets {\em slower} as their concentration rises.

The Majorana Experiment is a next-generation Ge-76 double-beta decay search. It will employ 500 kg of Ge, isotopically enriched to 86% in Ge-76, in the form of 200 detectors in a close-packed array for high granularity. Each crystal will be electronically segmented, with each region fitted with pulse-shape analysis electronics. A half-life sensitivity is predicted of 4.2e27 y or < 0.02-0.07 eV, depending on the nuclear matrix elements used to interpret the data., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures. Presented by F. T.
