We present a simple mathematical model for the fluid flow in the curtain coating process, exploiting the small aspect ratio, and examine the model in the large-Reynolds-number limit of industrial interest. We show that the fluid is in free fall except for a region close to the substrate, but find that the model can not describe the turning of the curtain onto the substrate. We find that the inclusion of a viscous bending moment close to the substrate allows the curtain to “turn the corner”.

The findings of randomised controlled trials\ud confirm that St John’s wort (Hypericum\ud perforatum L) is effective in reducing symptoms\ud in mild to moderate depression, but few studies\ud have focused on the effect on anxiety symptoms.\ud Most studies have employed observer-rated\ud scales to measure treatment outcome, only few\ud used self-rated scales. We sought to examine\ud these issues in a cohort of members of the\ud depression self-help organisation Depression\ud Alliance UK (n=39). Hospital Anxiety and\ud Depression (HADS) scales were used at baseline,\ud prior to St John’s wort administration, and for\ud subsequent assessments at weeks 4, 8 and 12.\ud A subject-rated version of the Clinical Global\ud Impression – Improvement (CGI-I) scale was\ud employed at follow-up assessments. HADS\ud scores were significantly reduced after taking\ud St John’s wort, particularly for those reporting\ud milder depression and more severe anxiety.\ud HADS scores compared well with patient\ud improvement ratings, indicating the feasibility\ud of use in this population. Controlled studies\ud are needed in a larger cohort to examine\ud these findings, before definitive conclusions can\ud be made.

A recent meta-analysis suggested that Hypericum\ud perforatum (St John’s wort) is an effective\ud treatment for mild to moderate depression and\ud may have a superior side-effect profile to some\ud antidepressant drugs. The aim of this study was to\ud assess the use of herbal remedies in treating\ud depressive and anxiety symptoms, as reported by\ud members of the UK self-help organization\ud Depression Alliance using self-completed\ud questionnaires. More than 50% of the 452\ud respondents reported using Hypericum, onequarter\ud of whom also reported concurrent use of\ud traditional antidepressants. Most of the sample\ud reported sufficient symptoms for warranting a\ud diagnosis of major depression, with the majority\ud also describing symptoms suggestive of co-morbid\ud psychiatric conditions. One-half of the Hypericum\ud users experienced symptom improvement, which\ud for most occurred within the first 4 weeks of use.\ud Response was better for those with mild as\ud compared to severe symptoms and poorer for\ud those taking Hypericum alongside other\ud antidepressants. The responders were generally\ud older than non-responders. Adverse effects were\ud reported by one-quarter of users and were mostly\ud psychological in nature. This retrospective survey\ud indicated that use of herbal remedies was\ud common in this population.
