Root system scientists strive to understand how a single root, emerging from a plant’s seed, can form a complex, dynamic and plastic network of thousands of individual roots. They investigate how such a network is ideally suited to perform a number of functions required for the harmonious development of the whole plant. Everyone in the community also knows how complicated it can be to study root systems, with tasks ranging from digging plants out of the soil, creating experimental set-ups that allow the observation of the roots, to quantifying the root network itself or the processes underlying its formation. Within the community, there is one person, Dr Loïc Pagès, who has been working on all these tasks for many years, and who has moved the field forward numerous times. On the occasion of his soon-to-be retirement, we would like to express our appreciation to him via this editorial.

Colonization of the root surface, or rhizoplane, is one of the first steps for soil-borne bacteria to become established in the plant microbiome. However, the relative contributions of processes, such as bacterial attachment and proliferation is not well characterized, and this limits our ability to comprehend the complex dynamics of microbial communities in the rhizosphere. The work presented here addresses this knowledge gap. A model system was developed to acquire quantitative data on the colonization process of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. cultivar. All Year Round) roots by Pseudomonas fluorescens isolate SBW25. A theoretical framework is proposed to calculate attachment rate and quantify the relative contribution of bacterial attachment to colonization. This allows the assessment of attachment rates on the root surface beyond the short time period during which it can be quantified experimentally. All techniques proposed are generic and similar analyses could be applied to study various combinations of plants and bacteria, or to assess competition between species. In the future this could allow for selection of microbial traits that improve early colonization and maintenance of targeted isolates in cropping systems, with potential applications for the development of biological fertilizers. © Copyright © 2020 Carroll, Holden, Gifford and Dupuy.

En effet, souvent les romanciers mettent en scène dans leurs récits des lieux, des territoires, des espaces auxquels ils confèrent des caractéristiques particulières. L’analyse de la création romanesque fait l’objet depuis quelques décennies d’une rencontre entre géographes et littéraires.

International audience; Cet essai apporte une contribution à la compréhension du fonctionnement de l’imaginaire géographique. La conception et la représentation de l’espace sont analysées à partir de l’étude de deux romans (Los pasos perdidos d’Alejo Carpentier et Le Rivage des Syrtes de Julien Gracq) et d’un cycle romanesque (À la Recherche du temps perdu de Marcel Proust). L’hypothèse retenue est qu’au sein de ces « romans géographes » les lieux ne doivent pas être réduits uniquement à leur topos (leur dimension physique) mais doivent être envisagés aussi et surtout sous l’angle de leur chôra (leur dimension sensible, existentielle). Un modèle théorique et conceptuel est proposé pour rendre compte des différentes relations établies entre le sujet, le récit et le lieu : le chronochore. L’ambition de cet essai est ainsi d’enrichir la géographie littéraire d’une réflexion approfondie sur le rôle de l’imaginaire géographique.

Rhizoboxes are soil-root compartments that may well provide the closest naturalistic conditions for studying root systems architectures (RSAs) in controlled environments. Rhizobox-based studies can however lead to mis-estimation of root traits due to poor recovery of roots and loss of fine root features during washing of roots. We used a novel scanner-based rhizobox system to evaluate: (i) RSA traits of Brassica rapa genotypes; (ii) the relationship between root traits recorded from rhizoboxes and those of harvested roots and (iii) genotypic variation of seedlings in response to external P ([P] ext) availability. Brassica rapa genotypes were grown in soil-filled rhizoboxes abutting flatbed scanners and were watered once with either deionised water or a solution of 600 ?M KH2PO4 to approximately 80% field capacity on a weight basis. Shoot and root P concentrations ([P]shoot and [P]root) of the B. rapa lines grown on different [P]ext were quantified. Visible root length at the surface of rhizoboxes constituted 85% of the total root length recovered from harvested root samples. High P supply induced a strong increase in [P]shoot in all genotypes (P < 0.001) whereas low P supply generally led to greater partitioning to roots. Seed P concentration and tissue P concentration were correlated only at low [P]ext. Total root length was strongly correlated with tissue P content under both low [P]ext (r = 0.81, P < 0.05) and high [P]ext (r = 0.82, P < 0.05) conditions. The novel scanner-based rhizobox system used addresses the substantial limitations associated with current use of rhizoboxes to study root growth dynamics.

International audience; Parce que les romans de Jules Verne sont ancrés dans une géographie où l’imaginaire occupe une place centrale, le récit vernien offre dès lors des expériences et manifestations de la spatialité bien différentes de celles que le géographe (universitaire) peut expérimenter sur des terrains dits « classiques ». L’imaginaire géographique permet ainsi au romancier de faire évoluer ses héros dans des univers merveilleux, hors de l’ordinaire, du quotidien qu’ils ont quitté pour découvrir des territoires alors vierges de toute présence humaine. Cette rencontre des hommes avec des lieux imaginaires est au cœur de la série des Voyages extraordinaires. Jules Verne, à la recherche de l’espace inconnu, témoigne en romancier de ces rapports complexes qui peuvent unir les hommes à la terre. Agissant de la sorte, il fait aussi œuvre de géographe, lui qui a toujours revendiqué écrire des romans géographiques. C’est à ce niveau que se situe alors notre contribution : montrer comment cette géographie littéraire (vernienne) constitue un terrain d’étude inédit, fondamentalement interdisciplinaire, et susceptible de transmettre autrement le savoir géographique.

Background and Aims. Root traits can be selected for crop improvement. Techniques such as soil excavations can be used to screen root traits in the field, but are limited to genotypes that are well-adapted to field conditions. The aim of this study was to compare a low-cost, high-throughput root phenotyping (HTP) technique in a controlled environment with field performance, using oilseed rape (OSR; Brassica napus) varieties. Methods. Primary root length (PRL), lateral root length and lateral root density (LRD) were measured on 14-d- old seedlings of elite OSR varieties (n 1⁄4 32) using a ‘pouch and wick’ HTP system (~40 replicates). Six field exper- iments were conducted using the same varieties at two UK sites each year for 3 years. Plants were excavated at the 6- to 8-leaf stage for general vigour assessments of roots and shoots in all six experiments, and final seed yield was determined. Leaves were sampled for mineral composition from one of the field experiments. Key Results. Seedling PRL in the HTP system correlated with seed yield in four out of six (r =0.50, 0.50, 0.33, 0.49; P < 0.05) and with emergence in three out of five (r= 0.59, 0.22, 0.49; P < 0.05) field experiments. Seedling LRD correlated positively with leaf concentrations of some minerals, e.g. calcium (r = 0.46; P < 0.01) and zinc (r = 0.58; P < 0.001), but did not correlate with emergence, general early vigour or yield in the field. Conclusions. Associations between PRL and field performance are generally related to early vigour. These root traits might therefore be of limited additional selection value, given that vigour can be measured easily on shoots/ canopies. In contrast, LRD cannot be assessed easily in the field and, if LRD can improve nutrient uptake, then it may be possible to use HTP systems to screen this trait in both elite and more genetically diverse, non-field-adapted OSR.
