1. Assessing Proton-Boron Fusion Feasibility under non-Thermal Equilibrium Conditions: Rider's Inhibition Revisited

Abstract

Compared to the D-T reaction, the neutron-free proton-boron (p-$^{11}$B) fusion has garnered increasing attention in recent years. However, significant Bremsstrahlung losses pose a formidable challenge in p-$^{11}$B plasmas in achieving $Q>1$ in thermal equilibrium. The primary aim of this study is to corroborate Todd H. Rider's seminal work in the 1997 Physics of Plasmas, who investigated the feasibility of sustaining p-$^{11}$B fusion under non-thermal equilibrium conditions. Employing a series of simulations with new fusion cross-section, we assessed the minimum recirculating power that must be recycled to maintain the system's non-thermal equilibrium and found that it is substantially greater than the fusion power output, aligning with Rider's conclusions, whether under the conditions of non-Maxwellian electron distribution or Maxwellian electron distribution, reactors reliant on non-equilibrium plasmas for p-$^{11}$B fusion are unlikely to achieve net power production without the aid of highly efficient external heat engines. However, maintaining the ion temperature at 300 keV and the Coulomb logarithm at 15, while increasing the electron temperature beyond 23.33 keV set by Rider, leads to diminished electron-ion energy transfer and heightened Bremsstrahlung radiation. When the electron temperature approaches approximately 140 keV, this progression ultimately leads to a scenario where the power of Bremsstrahlung loss equals the power of electron-ion interactions, yet remains inferior to the fusion power. Consequently, this results in a net gain in energy production.

2. Global gyrokinetic simulation of magnetic island induced ion temperature gradient turbulence in toroidal plasma

Abstract

The characteristics of ion temperature gradient (ITG) turbulence in the presence of a magnetic island are numerically investigated using a gyrokinetic model. We observe that in the absence of the usual ITG drive gradient, a solitary magnetic island alone can drive ITG instability. The magnetic island not only drives high-n modes of ITG instability but also induces low-n modes of vortex flow. Moreover, as the magnetic island width increases, the width of the vortex flow also increases. This implies that wider islands may more easily induce vortex flows. The study further indicates that the saturated amplitude and transport level of MI-induced ITG turbulence vary with different magnetic island widths. In general, larger magnetic islands enhance both particle and heat transport. When the magnetic island is of the order of 21 times the ion gyroradius (21\{rho}_i), the turbulence-driven transport level can reach the same level in cases where ITG is driven by pressure gradients., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The effect of island width on the multi-scale interactions between magnetic island (MI) and ion temperature gradient (ITG) turbulence has been investigated based on the global gyrokinetic approach. It is found that the coupling between the island and turbulence is enhanced when the MI width (w) becomes larger. A vortex flow that is highly sensitive to the width of the magnetic island can be triggered, ultimately resulting in a potent shear flow and a consequent reduction in turbulent transport. The shearing rate induced by the vortex flow is minimum at the O-point while it is maximum at both of the two reconnection points of the island, i.e., the X-points, regardless of the island width. There exists a nonmonotonic relationship between zonal flow (ZF) amplitude and island width, showing that the ZF is partially suppressed by medium-sized MIs whereas enhanced in the case of large island. A larger MI can tremendously damage the ITG mode structure, resulting in higher turbulent transport at the X-point whereas a lower one at the O-point, respectively. Such phenomenon will be less distinct at very small island widths below w/a =8% (a is the minor radius), where it shows that turbulence near the X-point is hardly affected although it is still suppressed inside the island. Furthermore, the influence of different island sizes on turbulence transport level is also discussed.

Abstract

Analysis of helicon wave heating and current drive capability in EXL-50 spherical torus plasmas has been conducted. It is found that the driven current increases with the launched parallel refractive index $n_{||}$ and peaks around $n_{||} = 4.0$ when the frequency of the helicon wave is between 300~MHz and 380~MHz. The helicon wave current drive efficiency shows a relatively stable upward trend with increasing plasma temperature. Moreover, the driven current decreases as the plasma density increases. We also analyzed the current drive with helicon waves of 150~MHz and 170~MHz and found that the driven current at a lower frequency was lower than that at a higher frequency. A positive proportional relationship exists between the driven current and $n_{||}$. Besides, as $n_{||}$ increases, the profile of the driven current becomes wider. Finally, the effect of the scrape-off layer (SOL) region on the helicon wave current drive was also investigated.

Abstract

Recent observations in HL-2A tokamak give new experimental evidences of energetic particle mode (EPM) avalanche. In a strong EPM burst, the mode structure propagates radially outward within two hundred Alfv\'en time, while the frequency of the dominant mode changes self-consistently to maximize wave-particle power exchange and mode growth. This suggests that significant energetic particle transport occurs in this avalanche phase, in agreement with theoretical framework of EPM convective amplification. A simplified relay runner model yields satisfactory interpretations of the measurements. The results can help understanding the nonlinear dynamics of energetic particle driven modes in future burning plasmas, such as ITER.

Abstract

A reproducible stationary improved confinement mode (I-mode) has been achieved recently in the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak, featuring good confinement without particle transport barrier, which could be beneficial to solving the heat flux problem caused by edge localized modes (ELM) and the helium ash problem for future fusion reactors. The microscopic mechanism of sustaining stationary I-mode, based on the coupling between turbulence transition and the edge temperature oscillation, has been discovered for the first time. A radially localized edge temperature ring oscillation (ETRO) with azimuthally symmetric structure ($n=0$,$m=0$) has been identified and it is caused by alternative turbulence transitions between ion temperature gradient modes (ITG) and trapped electron modes (TEM). The ITG-TEM transition is controlled by local electron temperature gradient and consistent with the gyrokinetic simulations. The self-organizing system consisting with ETRO, turbulence and transport transitions plays the key role in sustaining the I-mode confinement. Abstract

We report the first experimental evidence of Alfvenic ion temperature gradient (AITG) modes in HL-2A Ohmic plasmas. A group of oscillations with $f=15-40$ kHz and $n=3-6$ is detected by various diagnostics in high-density Ohmic regimes. They appear in the plasmas with peaked density profiles and weak magnetic shear, which indicates that corresponding instabilities are excited by pressure gradients. The time trace of the fluctuation spectrogram can be either a frequency staircase, with different modes excited at different times or multiple modes may simultaneously coexist. Theoretical analyses by the extended generalized fishbone-like dispersion relation (GFLDR-E) reveal that mode frequencies scale with ion diamagnetic drift frequency and $\eta_i$, and they lie in KBM-AITG-BAE frequency ranges. AITG modes are most unstable when the magnetic shear is small in low pressure gradient regions. Numerical solutions of the AITG/KBM equation also illuminate why AITG modes can be unstable for weak shear and low pressure gradients. Abstract

Traffic is essential for many dynamic processes on real networks, such as internet and urban traffic systems. The transport efficiency of the traffic system can be improved by taking full advantage of the resources in the system. In this paper, we propose a dual-strategy routing model for network traffic system, to realize the plenary utility of the whole network. The packets are delivered according to different "efficient routing strategies" [Yan, et al, Phys. Rev. E 73, 046108 (2006)]. We introduce the accumulate rate of packets, {\eta} to measure the performance of traffic system in the congested phase, and propose the so-called equivalent generation rate of packet to analyze the jamming processes. From analytical and numerical results, we find that, for suitable selection of strategies, the dual- strategy system performs better than the single-strategy system in a broad region of strategy mixing ratio. The analytical solution to the jamming processes is verified by estimating the number of jammed nodes, which coincides well with the result from simulation., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

In this letter, it is reported that the first experimental results are associated with the GAM induced by energetic electrons (eEGAM) in HL-2A Ohmic plasma. The energetic-electrons are generated by parallel electric fields during magnetic reconnection associated with tearing mode (TM). The eEGAM localizes in the core plasma, i.e. in the vicinity of q=2 surface, and is very different from one excited by the drift-wave turbulence in the edge plasma. The analysis indicated that the eEGAM is provided with the magnetic components, whose intensities depend on the poloidal angles, and its mode numbers are jm/nj=2/0. Further, there exist intense nonlinear interactions among eEGAM, BAEs and strong tearing modes (TMs). Abstract

We discuss the processes underlying the excitation of fishbone-like internal kink instabilities driven by supra-thermal electrons generated experimentally by different means: Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ECRH) and by Lower Hybrid (LH) power injection. The peculiarity and interest of exciting these electron fishbones by ECRH only or by LH only is also analyzed. Not only the mode stability is explained, but also the transition between steady state nonlinear oscillations to bursting (almost regular) pulsations, as observed in FTU, is interpreted in terms of the LH power input. These results are directly relevant to the investigation of trapped alpha particle interactions with low-frequency MHD modes in burning plasmas: in fact, alpha particles in reactor relevant conditions are characterized by small dimensionless orbits, similarly to electrons; the trapped particle bounce averaged dynamics, meanwhile, depends on energy and not mass., Comment: 28 pages 8 figures

Abstract

The evolutions of MHD instability behaviors and enhancement of both electrostatic and electromagnetic turbulence towards the plasma disruption have been clearly observed in the HL-2A plasmas. Two types of plasma disruptive discharges have been investigated for similar equilibrium parameters: one with a distinct stage of a small central temperature collapse (∼ 5–10%) around 1 millisecond before the thermal quench (TQ), while the other without. For both types, the TQ phase is preceded by a rotating 2/1 tearing mode, and it is the development of the cold bubble from the inner region of the 2/1 island O-point along with its inward convection that causes the massive energy loss. In addition, the micro-scale turbulence, including magnetic fluctuations and density fluctuations, increases before the small collapse, and more significantly towards the TQ. Also, temperature fluctuations measured by electron cyclotron emission imaging enhances dramatically at the reconnection site and expand into the island when approaching the small collapse and TQ, and the expansion is more significant close to the TQ. The observed turbulence enhancement near the X-point cannot be fully interpreted by the linear stability analysis by GENE. Evidences suggest that nonlinear effects, such as the reduction of local E r × B shear and turbulence spreading, may play an important role in governing turbulence enhancement and expansion. These results imply that the turbulence and its interaction with the island facilitate the stochasticity of the magnetic flux and formation of the cold bubble, and hence, the plasma disruption. Abstract

This paper reports the main recent results of the RFX-mod fusion science activity. The RFX-mod device is characterized by a unique flexibility in terms of accessible magnetic configurations. Axisymmetric and helically shaped reversed-field pinch equilibria have been studied, along with tokamak plasmas in a wide range of q(a) regimes (spanning from 4 down to 1.2 values). The full range of magnetic configurations in between the two, the so-called ultra-low q ones, has been explored, with the aim of studying specific physical issues common to all equilibria, such as, for example, the density limit phenomenon. The powerful RFX-mod feedback control system has been exploited for MHD control, which allowed us to extend the range of experimental parameters, as well as to induce specific magnetic perturbations for the study of 3D effects. In particular, transport, edge and isotope effects in 3D equilibria have been investigated, along with runaway mitigations through induced magnetic perturbations. The first transitions to an improved confinement scenario in circular and D-shaped tokamak plasmas have been obtained thanks to an active modification of the edge electric field through a polarized electrode. The experiments are supported by intense modeling with 3D MHD, gyrokinetic, guiding center and transport codes. Abstract

This paper reports the main recent results of the RFX-mod fusion science activity. The RFX-mod device is characterized by a unique exibility in terms of accessible magnetic con gurations. Axisymmetric and helically shaped reversed- eld pinch equilibria have been studied, along with tokamak plasmas in a wide range of q(a) regimes (spanning from 4 down to 1.2 values). The full range of magnetic con gurations in between the two, the so-called ultra-low q ones, has been explored, with the aim of studying speci c physical issues common to all equilibria, such as, for example, the density limit phenomenon. The powerful RFX-mod feedback control system has been exploited for MHD control, which allowed us to extend the range of experimental parameters, as well as to induce speci c magnetic perturbations for the study of 3D effects. In particular, transport, edge and isotope effects in 3D equilibria have been investigated, along with runaway mitigations through induced magnetic perturbations. The rst transitions to an improved con nement scenario in circular and D-shaped tokamak plasmas have been obtained thanks to an active modi cation of the edge electric eld through a polarized electrode. The experiments are supported by intense modeling with 3D MHD, gyrokinetic, guiding center and transport codes. Proposed modi cations to the RFX-mod device, which will enable further contributions to the solution of key issues in the roadmap to ITER and DEMO, are also brie y presented.

Abstract

The RFX-mod device is operated both as a reversed field pinch (RFP), where advanced regimes featuring helical shape develop, and as a tokamak. Due to its flexibility, RFX-mod is contributing to the solution of key issues in the roadmap to ITER and DEMO, including MHD instability control, internal transport barriers, edge transport and turbulence, isotopic effect, high density limit and three-dimensional (3D) non-linear MHD modelling. This paper reports recent advancements in the understanding of the self-organized helical states, featuring a strong electron transport barrier, in the RFP configuration; the physical mechanism driving the residual transport at the barrier has been investigated. Following the first experiments with deuterium as the filling gas, new results concerning the isotope effect in the RFP are discussed. Studies on the high density limit show that in the RFP it is related to a toroidal particle accumulation due to the onset of a convective cell. In the tokamak configuration, q(a) regimes down to q(a) = 1.2 have been pioneered, with (2,1) tearing mode (TM) mitigated and (2,1) resistive wall mode (RWM) stabilized: the control of such modes can be obtained both by poloidal and radial sensors. Progress has been made in the avoidance of disruptions due to the (2,1) TM by applying q(a) control, and on the general issue of error field control. The effect of externally applied 3D fields on plasma flow and edge turbulence, sawtooth control and runaway electron decorrelation has been analysed. The experimental program is supported by substantial theoretical activity: 3D non-linear visco-resistive MHD and non-local transport modelling have been advanced; RWMs have been studied by a toroidal MHD kinetic hybrid stability code.

We investigated whether any other biochemical indicator can be used in combination with VLDL for a better selective effect. Nineteen plasma biochemical indicators were measured in male chickens from the Northeast Agricultural University broiler lines divergently selected for AF content (NEAUHLF) in the fed state at 46 and 48 d of age. The average concentration of every parameter for the 2 d was used for statistical analysis. Levels of these 19 plasma biochemical parameters were compared between the lean and fat lines. The phenotypic correlations between these plasma biochemical indicators and AF traits were analyzed. Then, multiple linear regression models were constructed to select the best model used for selecting against AF content. and the heritabilities of plasma indicators contained in the best models were estimated. The results showed that 11 plasma biochemical indicators (triglycerides, total bile acid, total protein, globulin, albumin/globulin, aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, uric acid, creatinine, and VLDL) differed significantly between the lean and fat lines (P < 0.01), and correlated significantly with AF traits (P < 0.05). The best multiple linear regression models based on albumin/globulin, VLDL, triglycerides, globulin, total bile acid, and uric acid, had higher R² (0.73) than the model based only on VLDL (0.21). The plasma parameters included in the best models had moderate heritability estimates (0.21 ≤ h² ≤ 0.43). Abstract

This paper reports the highlights of the RFX-mod fusion science programme since the last 2010 IAEA Fusion Energy Conference. The RFX-mod fusion science programme focused on two main goals: exploring the fusion potential of the reversed field pinch (RFP) magnetic configuration and contributing to the solution of key science and technology problems in the roadmap to ITER. Active control of several plasma parameters has been a key tool in this endeavour. New upgrades on the system for active control of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability are underway and will be presented in this paper. Unique among the existing fusion devices, RFX-mod has been operated both as an RFP and as a tokamak. The latter operation has allowed the exploration of edge safety factor q edge < 2 with active control of MHD stability and studies concerning basic energy and flow transport mechanisms. Abstract

This paper summarizes the main achievements of the RFX fusion science program in the period between the 2008 and 2010 IAEA Fusion Energy Conferences. RFX-mod is the largest reversed field pinch in the world, equipped with a system of 192 coils for active control of MHD stability. The discovery and understanding of helical states with electron internal transport barriers and core electron temperature >1.5 keV significantly advances the perspectives of the configuration. Optimized experiments with plasma current up to 1.8 MA have been realized, confirming positive scaling. The first evidence of edge transport barriers is presented. Progress has been made also in the control of first-wall properties and of density profiles, with initial first-wall lithization experiments. Micro-turbulence mechanisms such as ion temperature gradient and micro-tearing are discussed in the framework of understanding gradient-driven transport in low magnetic chaos helical regimes. Both tearing mode and resistive wall mode active control have been optimized and experimental data have been used to benchmark numerical codes. The RFX programme also provides important results for the fusion community and in particular for tokamaks and stellarators on feedback control of MHD stability and on three-dimensional physics. Abstract

Objective: To investigate the clinical manifestations, imaging, pathological and molecular features of bronchopulmonary large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC). Methods: The clinical data of 216 LCNEC patients in the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University from 2011 to 2021 were analyzed retrospectively. The clinical manifestations, tumor location and size, characteristics of CT images, immunohistochemical and molecular pathological features were analyzed and compared with 115 cases of mixed small cell carcinoma (M-SCLC) diagnosed in the same period. Results: Among the 216 LCNEC patients, there were 190 males and 26 females, with a median age of 65 years. The first symptoms of the patients were mainly cough (106 cases, 49.1%) and bloody sputum (48 cases, 22.2%). The median tumor length were 4.7cm, including 55 cases of nodular type (25.5%) and 161 cases of mass-forming type (74.5%). CT imaging results showed that LCNEC lesions had soft tissue density, and the proportion of slight enhancement lesions was significantly lower than that in M-SCLC group (52.3% vs 74.8%, P< 0.001). In contrast, the proportion of necrosis (87.0% vs 58.3%, P< 0.001) and calcification (26.9% vs 2.6%, P< 0.001) in LCNEC patients was significantly higher than that in M-SCLC group. Immunohistochemical results showed that the positive rate of CK in LCNEC was significantly higher than that in M-SCLC ( 99.0 % vs 90.5%, P< 0.05 ) , while the positive rate of TTF-1 was significantly lower than that in M-SCLC (51.6% vs 67.0%, P< 0.05 ) . In LCNEC group, the proportion of patients with Ki-67 positive index between 50% and 80% was significantly higher than that of M-SCLC (41.2% vs 25.2%), while the proportion between 80% and 100% was lower than that of M-SCLC (51.9% vs 72.2%). There was no significant difference in the positive rates of CD56 (91.7% vs 94.6%, P =0.336), Syn (83.8% vs 84.7%, P =0.838) and CgA (54.8% vs 50.0%, P =0.632) in both tumor types. Molecular pathology results showed that frequent mutatios were TP53 (54.5%), RB1 (36.4%), KEAP1 (18.2%), MYC(18.2%), and PTEN (14.3%), and the rate of tumor mutation burden which is more than 25 mutation/Mb was 27.3%. Conclusions: LCNEC lacks specific clinical manifestations. CT imaging is powerful in distinguishing LCNEC from M-SCLC. LCNEC contains a specific mutation spectrum. Pathology combined with immunohistochemical staining is still the gold standard for LCNEC diagnosis, and the differentiation from M-SCLC mainly depends on cell size and nuclear chromatin pattern with light microscopy.

Abstract

Early detection and treatment is critically important for lung cancer patients. Inflammatory mediators such as IL-6, IL-10, and MCP-1 participate in lung cancer regulation. CEA, CA125, and ProGRP are commonly used serum tumor markers for lung cancer. In this study, we assessed the sensitivity and specificity of CEA, CA125, and ProGRP when used in combination with IL-6, IL-10, and MCP in lung cancer diagnosis. Serum from three different groups (healthy controls, individuals with high risk for lung cancer, and lung cancer patients) was collected. Electrochemiluminescence was used to detect expressions of CEA, CA125, and ProGRP; ELISA was used to examine serum levels of IL-6, IL-10, and MCP-1. Specificity and sensitivity of single as well as combination markers in lung cancer diagnosis were determined. Results indicated that CEA, CA125, ProGRP, and MCP-1 were significantly up-regulated in lung cancer patients as compared to those in controls and high risk individuals. Higher IL-6 and IL-10 levels were observed in both lung cancer patients and high-risk individuals as compared to those in controls. Highest sensitivity (95.2%) in cancer diagnosis was achieved when all six markers were used. This was followed by a combination of IL-6, IL-10, CEA, CA125, and ProGRP (92.6%). The most sensitive (88.6%). Four-marker combination was composed of IL-6, CEA, CA125, and ProGRP. As the combined usage of CEA, CA125, ProGRP, IL-6, IL-10, and MCP-1 significantly improved sensitivity of lung cancer detection; this biomarker arrangement may be beneficial for early diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of lung cancer.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare two scoring systems used for the diagnosis of acute mountain sickness (AMS): the Lake Louise Scoring (AMS-LLS) and the Chinese Scoring Systems (AMS-CSS). In total, 339 healthy young adult volunteers residing at sea level ascended to 3200 m by train and bus over a total journey time of 48 h. All subjects ascended in the same manner and were divided into three groups that were assessed after one (N = 88), two (N = 91), and three (N = 160) nights, respectively, at altitude. The overall incidence of AMS was 17.11% (N = 58) and 29.79% (N = 101) according to the AMS-LLS and AMS-CSS, respectively. Two participants (0.59%) experienced high-altitude pulmonary edema. Both scoring systems showed the highest incidence of AMS after the second night at high altitude. The AMS-CSS and AMS-LLS scores were significantly correlated (Pearson's r = 0.820, P < 0.001). The AMS-CSS identified all AMS subjects diagnosed by the AMS-LLS, and an additional 43 subjects. The dominant symptoms were reduced exercise tolerance (61.7%), fatigue (49.0%), dizziness (28.9%), chest distress (28.3%), and headache (27.4%). Compared with the AMS-LLS, the sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of the AMS-CSS were 100, 84.7, 57.43, and 100%, respectively. There was no relationship between oxygen saturation levels and AMS scores at 3200 m. In summary, the AMS-CSS was similar to AMS-LLS, except that it resulted in more positive diagnoses, and headache did not play a large diagnostic role.
