We use physical models to investigate how body size, wing shape, and climate modulate these energetic constraints. Our model predicts that thermoregulatory and flight costs, respectively, impose upper and lower bounds on the wing surface-to-mass ratio, giving rise to an optimum shape, and that variations around this optimum are more constrained in cold regions. A comparative analysis across bat species supports the model's predictions, suggesting that body shape evolves toward an optimum with stronger selective pressures in cold regions. The model and data together suggest that thermoregulatory and locomotory constraints modulate the evolution of bats' morphology. As thousands of new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed, there is an increasing demand to understand the factors underlying the spread of this disease. Using country-level data, we modeled the early growth in the number of cases for over 480 cities in all Brazilian states. As the main findings, we found that the percentage of people respecting social distancing protocols was the main explanatory factor for the observed growth rate of COVID-19. Those cities that presented the highest spread of the new coronavirus were also those that had lower averages of social distancing. We also underline that total population of cities and connectivity, represented by the city-level importance to the air transportation of people across the country, plays important roles in the dissemination of SARS-CoV-2. Climate and socioeconomic predictors had little contribution to the big-picture scenario. Our results show that different States had high variability in their growth rates, mostly due to quite different public health strategies to retain the outbreak of COVID-19. In spite of all limitations of such a large-scale approach, our results underline that climatic conditions are likely weak limiting factors for the spread of the new coronavirus, and the circulation of people in the city- and country-level are the most responsible factors for the early outbreak of COVID-19 in Brazil. Moreover, we reinforce that social distancing protocols are fundamental to avoid critical scenarios and the collapse of healthcare systems. We also predict that economic-induced decisions for relaxing social distancing might have catastrophic consequences, especially in large cities.

Primates occur in 90 countries, but four - Brazil, Madagascar, Indonesia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)—harbor 65% of the world’s primate species (439) and 60% of these primates are Vulnerable, Endangered, or Critically Endangered (IUCN Red List of Threatened Species 2017-3). Considering their importance for global primate conservation, we examine the anthropogenic pressures each country is facing that place their primate populations at risk. Habitat loss and fragmentation are main threats to primates in Brazil, Madagascar and Indonesia. However, in DRC hunting for the commercial bushmeat trade is the primary threat. Encroachment on primate habitats driven by local and global market demands for food and nonfood commodities hunting, illegal trade, the proliferation of invasive species, and human and domestic-animal borne infectious diseases cause habitat loss, population declines, and extirpation. Modeling agricultural expansion in the 21st century for the four countries under a worst-casescenario, showed a primate range contraction of 78% for Brazil, 72% for Indonesia 62% for Madagascar and 32% for DRC. These pressures unfold in the context of expanding human populations with low levels of development. Weak governance across these four countries may limit effective primate conservation planning. We examine landscape and local approaches to effective primate conservation policies and assess the distribution of protected areas and primates in each country. P rimates in Brazil and Madagascar have 38% of their range inside protected areas, 17% in Indonesia and 14% in DRC, suggesting that the great majority of primate populations remain vulnerable. We list the key challenges faced by the four countries to avert primate extinctions now and in the future. In the short term, effective law enforcement to stop illegal hunting and illegal forest destruction is absolutely key. Long-term success can only be achieved by focusing local and global public awareness, actively engaging with international organizations, multinational businesses and consumer nations to reduce unsustainable demands on the environment. Finally, the four primate range states need to ensure that integrated, sustainable land-use planning for economic development includes the maintenance of biodiversity and intact, functional natural ecosystems.

A agricultura é a atividade humana com maior impacto sobre o ambiente. Particularmente, ela representa a maior ameaça à biodiversidade. No futuro, essa atividade deve expandir-se com o aumento populacional humano, o aumento do consumo e a produção de biocombustíveis a partir dos alimentos. Para entender os possíveis impactos dessa expansão sobre a biodiversidade, nós utilizamos cenários de mudança de uso do solo entre 2000 e 2100 do IMAGE (Integrated Model to Access Global Environment) para testar as seguintes hipóteses: (i) as áreas consideradas como prioridades globais de conservação pelas ONGs internacionais serão preferencialmente impactadas pela expansão agrícola no século XXI; (ii) há um conflito entre áreas prioritárias para a conservação de carnívoros e a expansão agrícola e esse conflito pode ser reduzido com a incorporação da informação sobre expansão agrícola no processo de priorização; (iii) a integração entre os países para o planejamento da conservação pode ser favorável à proteção da biodiversidade e à produção agrícola; (iv) no Brasil, as áreas protegidas serão impactadas pela expansão agrícola no futuro e esse impacto será diferente entre áreas de proteção integral e áreas de uso sustentável. Nós encontramos os seguintes resultados: (i) o impacto sobre as áreas prioritárias para a conservação depende dos critérios pelos quais elas foram definidas, assim, as áreas definidas por sua alta vulnerabilidade estão atualmente mais impactadas do que áreas de baixa vulnerabilidade. Ao longo do século XXI, o impacto geral da agricultura deve aumentar, mas a diferença entre os dois tipos de prioridades se mantém, exceto para as High Biodiversity Wilderness Areas, definidas por sua baixa vulnerabilidade, mas que nos cenários mais pessimistas podem ter um impacto agrícola semelhante ao das áreas de alta vulnerabilidade; (ii) há uma alta congruência espacial entre áreas com elevado uso agrícola no futuro e áreas prioritárias para a conservação de carnívoros; esse conflito pode ser reduzido se o processo de priorização incluir as informações sobre a expansão agrícola; a incorporação dessa informação, entretanto, provoca uma profunda alteração na distribuição das áreas prioritárias e reduz o número de populações de carnívoros protegidas; (iii) a integração entre os países para a criação de um conjunto de áreas prioritárias para conservação que represente 17% da superfície terrestre pode proteger 19% mais populações de mamíferos sem reduzir a produção de alimentos, se comparada a uma estratégia em que cada país busque proteger seu território independentemente; (iv) o impacto da agricultura no Brasil deve aumentar até o fim do século XXI, ameaçando inclusive as áreas protegidas e o seu entorno. Esse impacto, porém, não deve ser diferente entre as áreas de uso sustentável e aquelas de proteção integral. Assim, a expansão agrícola deve continuar a ser uma importante ameaça à biodiversidade no futuro, atingindo inclusive áreas de especial interesse para a conservação. As ações de conservação devem ser planejadas levando em consideração essa ameaça, a fim de reduzir seus impactos potenciais. Para isso, países como o Brasil devem reforçar sua vigilância sobre a expansão agrícola e a maneira como essa atividade é desenvolvida. Além disso, a integração internacional dos esforços de conservação deve ser buscada, dados seus benefícios para a biodiversidade e para a produção de alimentos. E por fim, a humanidade deve optar por formas de produção agrícola que reduzam seus impactos, inclusive evitando sua expansão futura, mas que possam satisfazer as necessidades da população humana globalmente. Agriculture is the human activity with the greatest impact on the environment. Specifically, it represents the greatest threat to biodiversity. In the future, this activity should expand due to population growth, increased consumption and production of biofuels from food. To understand the possible impacts of this expansion on biodiversity, we used scenarios of land use change between 1970 and 2100 from IMAGE (Integrated Model to Access Global Environment) to test the following hypotheses: (i) areas considered as global priorities for conservation by international NGOs will be preferentially impacted by agricultural expansion in the XXI century, (ii) there is a conflict between the priority areas for carnivores conservation and agricultural expansion, and this conflict can be reduced by incorporating information on agricultural expansion in the prioritization process, (iii) the integration among countries for conservation planning may benefit both biodiversity and agricultural productivity, (iv) Brazilian protected areas will be impacted by agricultural expansion in the future and this impact will differ between protected areas of integral protection and those of sustainable use. We found that: (i) the impact on priority areas for conservation depends on the criteria by which they were set, so that areas defined by its high vulnerability are currently most affected than those of low vulnerability. Throughout the XXI century this impact is expected to increase, although the difference between the two types of priorities remains, except for High Biodiversity Wilderness Areas, defined by their low vulnerability in current time, but for which most pessimistic scenarios forecast an impact similar to priority areas of high vulnerability, (ii) there is a high spatial congruence between areas with high agricultural use in the future and priority areas for conservation of carnivores. This conflict can be reduced if the prioritization process include information on agricultural expansion; this incorporation, however, causes a profound change in the distribution of priority areas and reduces the number of protected carnivore populations, (iii) the integration of countries to create a set of priority areas for conservation that represents 17% of the land surface can protect 19% more mammal populations without reducing food production, compared to a strategy in which each country seeks to protect its territory independently, and (iv) the impact of agriculture in Brazil is expected to increase until the end of the century, threatening even the protected areas and their surroundings. This impact, however, should not be different between areas of sustainable use and those of integral protection. We conclude that agricultural expansion should remain a major threat to biodiversity in the future, even in areas of special interest for conservation. Conservation actions should be planned taking into account this threat in order to reduce their potential impacts. For this, countries like Brazil should strengthen its surveillance on agricultural expansion and on how this activity is developed. Furthermore, the integration of international conservation efforts should be pursued, given its benefits for biodiversity and food production. Finally, humanity must choose methods of agricultural production that reduce its impacts, including avoiding its future expansion, so as to meet the increasing needs of a human population globally.

Species' geographic ranges are usually considered as basic units in macroecology and biogeography, yet it is still difficult to measure them accurately for many reasons. About 20 years ago, researchers started using local data on species' occurrences to estimate broad scale ranges, thereby establishing the niche modeling approach. However, there are still many problems in model evaluation and application, and one of the solutions is to find a consensus solution among models derived from different mathematical and statistical models for niche modeling, climatic projections and variable combination, all of which are sources of uncertainty during niche modeling. In this paper, we discuss this approach of ensemble forecasting and propose that it can be divided into three phases with increasing levels of complexity. Phase I is the simple combination of maps to achieve a consensual and hopefully conservative solution. In Phase II, differences among the maps used are described by multivariate analyses, and Phase III consists of the quantitative evaluation of the relative magnitude of uncertainties from different sources and their mapping. To illustrate these developments, we analyzed the occurrence data of the tiger moth, Utetheisa ornatrix (Lepidoptera, Arctiidae), a Neotropical moth species, and modeled its geographic range in current and future climates. A distribuição geográfica das espécies tem sido considerada como a unidade básica em macroecologia e biogeografia, mas ainda há dificuldades em mensurá-la de forma adequada, por diferentes razões. Há cerca de 20 anos atrás, os pesquisadores começaram a utilizar dados locais da ocorrência das espécies para estimar essas distribuições utilizando modelos de nicho ecológico. Entretanto, ainda há uma série de problemas na avaliação dos modelos e em suas aplicações, e uma das soluções é utilizar um consenso de diferentes modelos, projeções climáticas, cenários de emissão e combinação de variáveis, que são fontes de incerteza durante o processo de modelagem de nicho. Neste artigo nós discutimos essa abordagem de consenso e a dividimos em três fases, com níveis crescentes de complexidade. A Fase I é simplesmente a combinação de mapas e a obtenção e interpretação de um único mapa de consenso. A Fase II envolve a descrição das diferenças entre os mapas utilizando técnicas de análise multidimensional, enquanto que a Fase III consiste em analisar quantitativamente e mapear a magnitude relativa das diferentes fontes de incerteza. A fim de ilustrar essa abordagem, nós analisamos dados de ocorrência de Utetheisa ornatrix (Lepidoptera, Arctiidae), uma mariposa distribuída na região Neotropical, modelando sua distribuição geográfica com base em dados climáticos atuais e projeções de mudança climática.

The National Forest of São Francisco de Paula (FLONA/SFP) is located in the Araucaria forest ecorregion which suffered a very intensive historical destruction. Although the FLONA/SFP is not a Conservation Unity of restrict use, it has a great role in the conservation of biodiversity. The effectiveness of this and others CUs for a long time could only be reached with an adequate management of its area and its buffer zone. The aim of this work is the identification of main areas to conservation within the FLONA/SFP, the verification of important areas to activities of conservation and inspection in the buffer zone and the identification of possible corridors linking FLONA/SFP to others CUs. The road net, the hydrographic and the altimetric map had been gotten from letters 1:50,000 and the occupation and use of the ground had been verified from 1999 Landsat images. A total area of 1014.4 ha (63.2 %) was classified as priority for the preservation in the interior of the FLONA/SFP due to its declivity (> 30o), vegetation cover (native forest) and distance from rivers (up to 30 m). The areas of the microbasins that drain towards the interior of the FLONA/SFP and therefore, are priorities for actions of conservation and inspection have 9,000ha. Two ecological corridors had been identified that connect the FLONA/SFP to other CUs of the region. Having a total area of about 18,000ha, these corridors are of great importance for the creation of a big continuous area under legal protection in the region of Araucaria Forest. This work highlights the importance of FLONA/SPF and gives subsidies for its management at different scales. The category of use of this CU could be altered to a more restrict one., A Floresta Nacional de São Francisco de Paula (FLONA/SFP) está localizada na Floresta Ombrófila Mista, uma ecorregião que sofreu uma destruição histórica intensa. Embora a FLONA/SFP não seja uma Unidade de Conservação (UC) de uso restrito, ela tem um grande papel na conservação da biodiversidade. A efetividade dessa e de outras UCs a longo prazo, no entanto, só é possível com um manejo adequado da sua área e do seu entorno. O objetivo desse trabalho é a identificação de áreas prioritárias para a conservação no interior da FLONA/SFP, verificação de áreas prioritárias para atividades de conservação e fiscalização no seu entorno e identificação de possíveis corredores ligando a FLONA/SFP a outras UCs. A rede viária, a hidrografia e o mapa altimétrico foram obtidos a partir de cartas 1:50.000 e a ocupação e uso do solo foram verificados a partir de imagens Landsat de 1999. Uma área total de 1014,4 ha (63,2 %) foi classificada como prioritária para a preservação no interior da FLONA/SFP em virtude da declividade (>30o), cobertura (floresta nativa) e distância de rios (até 30 m). As áreas de abrangência das microbacias que drenam para o interior da FLONA/SFP e que, portanto, são prioritárias para as ações de conservação e fiscalização tem um tamanho total de 9.000ha. Foram identificados dois corredores ecológicos que conectam a FLONA/SFP a outras UCs da região. Apresentando uma área total de cerca de 18.000ha, esses corredores são de fundamental importância para a criação de uma grande área contínua sob proteção legal na região da Mata com Araucária. Esse trabalho evidencia a importância local e regional da FLONA/SFP e dá subsídios para o seu manejo em diferentes escalas. A categoria de uso desta UC poderia ser alterada, tornando seu uso mais restrito.

O fim da Ecologia de Paisagem é o entendimento relação entre os padrões espaciais e os processos ecológicos. O desenvolvimento inicial dessa disciplina, na Europa, na década de 1930, foi relacionado ao uso das fotografias aéreas e ao surgimento do conceito de ecossistema. Já na década de 1980, a partir do EUA, a Ecologia de Paisagem firmou-se como um importante campo de estudo com a utilização das imagens de satélite, dos sistemas de informação geográfica e com a crescente relevância do componente espacial nas teorias ecológicas. No estudo da dinâmica da paisagem, as imagens de satélite têm sua aplicação limitada por serem muito recentes, especialmente aquelas com maior resolução. Uma solução para esse problema é a comparação dessas imagens com fotografias áreas, disponíveis já há algumas décadas. A crise ambiental, enfrentada pela humanidade, tem como principal aspecto a alteração da cobertura da terra, o que é de grande relevância para a Ecologia de Paisagem. Essa alteração foi mais intensa em algumas regiões da Terra. A Mata Atlântica, por exemplo, apresenta apenas cerca de 8% da sua distribuição original. No enfrentamento dessa crise, e em especial, na busca da conservação da biodiversidade, as unidades de conservação têm sido a ferramenta fundamental. Além de conservar os processos no seu interior, as áreas protegidas devem servir como marco para o planejamento regional da conservação. Esse planejamento tem de levar em conta as características da região e as suas ameaças, e para tal as ferramentas e teorias da Ecologia de Paisagem têm um grande papel. Nesse contexto, o nosso objetivo é avaliar a mudança da paisagem recente e seus possíveis fatores direcionadores. Para tal, foram comparadas fotografias aéreas de 1974 com imagens de satélite da alta resolução de 2002/2004. A área estudada foi o Parque Estadual de Itapeva (PEI), RS, e seu entorno. Para o mapeamento da área do PEI e das adjacências distantes até 500 m, foi utilizada uma imagem Quickbird, de 2004. Para a zona de amortecimento, área distante pelo menos 10 km do limite do parque, foram utilizadas imagens Spot de 2002. Os fatores direcionadores avaliados foram: proximidade de estradas, de corpos d’água, e áreas com alta declividade e origem geológica do terreno. Foram identificadas nessa análise diversas formações características do Domínio Mata Atlântica além de classes de cobertura do solo decorrentes da atividade humana. As classes de cobertura antrópicas cobriam a maioria da paisagem já no momento inicial de nossa análise, revelando um importante impacto antrópico na região. Essa impacto também foi demonstrado pela alteração de cerca de 35% da paisagem do entorno e de 46% da área do PEI, no período analisado. A maior parte da alteração, em ambas as análises, foi representada pelo aumento das classes de cobertura antrópicas em detrimento das classes de cobertura naturais. A análise da mudança do padrão da paisagem entre as duas datas, medida pelos índices de paisagem, demonstrou um potencial prejuízo da qualidade dos hábitats e dos fluxos biológicos, tendo em vista que a área núcleo total das manchas de classes naturais diminuiu, assim como o índice de proximidade enquanto a distância entre as manchas aumentou. Uma exceção a essa tendência foi a expansão das florestas de encosta, especialmente sobre áreas de agricultura. Tal expansão parece ser resultado do abandono das áreas de encosta decorrente do êxodo rural verificado na região. A expansão da floresta de encosta foi refletida nos índices de paisagem que evidenciaram um aumento da área núcleo e da conectividade nessas áreas. A análise dos fatores direcionadores mostrou que os mesmos têm efeito sobre a paisagem, pois a composição das áreas sob sua influência é diferenciada, embora a taxa de alteração dessas áreas tenha sido semelhante à taxa de alteração da região como um todo. Nosso estudo sugere que a alteração da cobertura da terra é uma importante ameaça na região do PEI. Para a conservação do PEI e de seu entorno, essa dinâmica deve ser alterada. The aim of Landscape Ecology is the understanding of the relations between spatial patterns and ecological processes. The initial development of this field, in Europe, in the 1930’s, was related to aerial photographs availability and the origin of the ecosystem concept. During the 1980’s, in USA, Landscape Ecology, established definitely as an important research field based on the use of satellite images, on the geographical information systems and on the increasing importance of the space in the ecological theories. In the study of the landscape dynamics, the use of satellite images is limited because they are very recent, especially those with higher resolution. The solution of this problem is to compare these images with aerial photographs which are available for several decades. The environmental crisis faced nowadays by humanity has as the main problem the land cover change. This fact has great importance for Landscape Ecology. This alteration of the Earth is not equally distributed. The Brazilian Atlantic Forest, for example, has only about 8% of its original distribution. To face this crisis, and specially, to protect biodiversity, protected areas are the main tool. Besides protecting the ecological processes in its own area, they need to be cornerstone on which regional conservation is built. Conservation planning requires assessment of the characteristics of the region and its threats. Landscape Ecology’s tools and theories have a great role in this job. Our purpose is to evaluate landscape change and its possible driving forces. We compared aerial photographs from 1974 with high resolution satellite images from 2002/2004. The study area was the Itapeva State Park (PEI), RS, and its buffer zone. For the land cover mapping of PEI and the area 500m distant of its limits, we used a Quickbird image, from 2004. In the buffer zone, far at least 10 km from the park, we used a 2002 Spot image. We analyzed these driving forces: road proximity, water bodies’ proximity, high slope and the geological origin of the area. We found many cover types typical of the Atlantic Forest Domain, and land cover classes related to human activities. The anthropic areas were already dominant in the landscape at the beginning of our analysis. The importance of the human impact in the study area was showed also by the alteration of 35% of the buffer zone and of 46% of the PEI. Most of this alteration, in both analyses, was the increase of anthropic land cover classes in detriment of the original ones. The change in the landscape pattern between both dates, measured by landscape metrics, showed a potential damage of the habitats and a decrease in the biological fluxes, since the total core area of the patches decreased as the proximity index while the mean distance between the patches increased. An exception to this trend was the expansion of the hillside forest, especially over agriculture. This expansion seems to be related to the rural exodus that occurred in this region, xvi and was reflected in the landscape metrics that evidenced an increase in the core area and in the connectivity. The analysis of the driving forces suggested that the factors studied affected the landscape since the composition of the areas under its influence is different, although the alteration rate was similar to the whole alteration. Our study suggests that land cover change is an important threat in the PEI region and it must be altered for the effectivity of the conservation of this area.

Como resposta à contínua perda de biodiversidade e aumento sem precedentes nas taxas de extinção de espécies, muitos têm se debruçado no exercício de propor estratégias de conservação in situ, dentre as quais se destaca o estabelecimento de áreas protegidas (APs). Alicerçada pelo Planejamento Sistemático da Conservação (PSC) e respaldada por metas acordadas em tratados inter-governamentais, como a Convenção sobre Diversidade Biológica (CDB), esta estratégia tem sido cada vez mais defendida dentro de uma perspectiva holística, capaz de reunir distintos aspectos da natureza como alvos da conservação. Hoje, as múltiplas dimensões da biodiversidade e os serviços ecossistêmicos têm protagonizado as propostas de planejamento espacial para a expansão das APs. Em regiões biodiversas, mas ainda pouco conhecidas e severamente ameaçadas, como o bioma Caatinga, as lacunas de conhecimento sobre biodiversidade juntamente com as pressões antrópicas, conversão de habitats naturais e forte dependência das pessoas em relação aos recursos naturais e serviços advindos da natureza, figuram entre os principais desafios para a implementação da conservação. Assim, estratégias para subsidiar a conservação demandam hoje abordagens multi-dimensionais e integrativas. Com essa perspectiva, desenvolvemos esta tese em três capítulos no intuito de apresentar o estado da arte dos estudos de priorização espacial para a conservação e otimizar o uso dos dados disponíveis sobre distribuição de vertebrados terrestres, plantas e serviços ecossistêmicos na Caatinga para avaliar ações de conservação implementadas e/ou propostas para este bioma. Utilizando métodos de busca sistematizada na literatura, no primeiro capítulo sintetizamos os principais caminhos seguidos nos estudos de priorização espacial e definimos o escopo da abordagem que fundamentou o desenvolvimento desta tese. Através da abordagem do PSC, realizamos, a análise de lacunas para verificar a representação destes alvos de conservação na atual rede de APs e territórios indígenas (TIs) da Caatinga, bem como nas redes de áreas prioritárias propostas através do Ministério do Meio Ambiente (MMA) e Centro Nacional de Conservação da Flora (CNCFlora), para expandir as APs neste bioma. Com o objetivo de melhorar o quadro atual de conservação da Caatinga, também fizemos análises de priorização espacial para identificar áreas que maximizam a representação das espécies (considerando seus diferentes perfis) e dos serviços ecossistêmicos em cenários que expandem a proteção atual para atender metas internacionais de conservação para 2020 e 2030. No segundo capítulo, focamos na análise dos vertebrados em uma perspectiva de alcance de metas de conservação com base na dimensão taxonômica da diversidade. Em geral, as APs e TIs, cobrindo 9,1% da Caatinga, representam em média 9,8% da distribuição das espécies, com 37 espécies não protegidas. Ao proteger 15,3-32,0% do bioma, as redes prioritárias conforme proposta do MMA podem aumentar a média atual para 15,2% -37,5% da distribuição das espécies, ainda resultando em espécies não protegidas. A solução que apresentamos representa em média 26,8-42,5% da distribuição das espécies, incluindo todo o conjunto de espécies analisado e efetivamente representando mais de 91% dos tetrápodes em maior risco. Custos de oportunidade deslocaram as prioridades para áreas menos afetadas pelas atividades humanas, reduzindo principalmente a representação de espécies ameaçadas. Ao direcionar a atenção para a conservação de plantas em suas dimensões taxonômicas, funcionais e filogenéticas, conjuntamente com serviços ecossistêmicos, observamos, no terceiro capítulo, que APs e TIs cobrem uma média de 16.9% da distribuição das espécies analisadas, além de uma média de 8.0% da distribuição dos serviços de regulação e 11.2% da distribuição dos serviços de suporte. Conforme as propostas do MMA e do CNCFlora, redes de áreas prioritárias cuja extensão territorial se aproxima da meta de proteger 30% do bioma podem melhorar essa representação, mas com o aumento do custo espacial. Com foco na conservação da flora ameaçada, a proposta do CNCFlora representa a menor média de distribuição das plantas analisadas do que as redes propostas pelo MMA, as quais incluíram diferentes alvos além das plantas. Com o objetivo de proteger 30% da Caatinga, nossas soluções representaram uma média acima de 60% da distribuição das espécies, aumentando até 85% a representação das plantas de maior risco. Consequentemente, estas soluções apresentam maior custo-benefício quanto à demanda de área quando comparadas com priorizações existentes. Todas as redes avaliadas representaram serviços ecossistêmicos de maneira homogênea, provavelmente devido à sua ampla distribuição na Caatinga. Na escala do bioma, a riqueza de espécies e as diversidades filogenética e funcional foram próximas do valor máximo (90-100%) em todas as redes analisadas. Na escala das unidades de planejamento (ca. 30km²), porém, nossas soluções concentraram as maiores médias destas métricas. Como observado no segundo capítulo, com foco nos vertebrados, a inclusão dos custos de oportunidade reduziu marginalmente a representação das espécies da flora nas áreas selecionadas. De modo geral, nossas soluções foram capazes de representar a biodiversidade e os serviços ecossistêmicos. Concluímos, portanto, que o uso otimizado das informações disponíveis, através de uma abordagem que integre diferentes alvos da conservação, ajudam a apoiar o planejamento de conservação eficiente. Em uma região onde as pessoas dependem fortemente da natureza, melhorar os benefícios da conservação torna-se urgente. Nesse contexto, nossa abordagem multi-dimensional integrativa pode contribuir para apoiar estratégias mais pragmáticas e eficientes de conservação em outros biomas vulneráveis e pouco conhecidos, melhorando a proteção das espécies em todas as dimensões da sua biodiversidade, além da proteção dos serviços ecossistêmicos. In uncertain times, marked by rapid changes that aggravate the various crises we face today (eg environmental, health, economic, social), scientists need to join and direct efforts to present practical and effective solutions that can mitigate the harmful effects of actions human beings, which put at risk the perpetuation of life on the planet in its most diverse manifestations. As a response to the continuous loss of biodiversity and unprecedented increase in species extinction rates, many have focused on proposing in situ conservation strategies, among which the establishment of protected areas (PAs) stands out. Underpinned by Systematic Conservation Planning (SCP) and supported by goals agreed in inter-governmental treaties, such as the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), this strategy has been increasingly defended within a holistic perspective, capable of bringing together different aspects of the nature as conservation targets. Today, the multiple dimensions of biodiversity and ecosystem services have played a leading role in spatial planning proposals for the expansion of PAs. In biodiverse, but still little-known and severely threatened regions, such as the Caatinga biome, knowledge gaps about biodiversity along with anthropogenic pressures, conversion of natural habitats and people's strong dependence on natural resources and services arising from nature, figure among the main challenges for the implementation of conservation. Thus, strategies to support conservation today demand multi-dimensional and integrative approaches. With this perspective, we developed this thesis in three chapters in order to present the state of the art of spatial prioritization studies for conservation and to optimize the use of available data on the distribution of terrestrial vertebrates, plants and ecosystem services in the Caatinga to assess conservation actions implemented and/or proposed for this biome. Using systematic literature search methods, in the first chapter we summarize the main paths followed in studies of spatial prioritization and define the scope of the approach that founded the development of this thesis. Through the SCP approach, we performed a gap analysis to verify the representation of these conservation targets in the current network of PAs and indigenous lands (ILs) of the Caatinga, as well as in the priority area networks proposed through the Ministry of Environment Environment (MMA) and National Center for Flora Conservation (CNCFlora), to expand PAs in this biome. In order to improve the current Caatinga conservation framework, we also carried out spatial prioritization analyzes to identify areas that maximize the representation of species (considering their different profiles) and ecosystem services in scenarios that expand current protection to meet international goals of conservation for 2020 and 2030. In the second chapter, we focus on vertebrate analysis from a perspective of achieving conservation goals based on the taxonomic dimension of diversity. In general, PAs and ILs, covering 9.1% of the Caatinga, represent on average 9.8% of the species distribution, with 37 unprotected species. By protecting 15.3-32.0% of the biome, priority networks as proposed by the MMA can increase the current average to 15.2% -37.5% of the species distribution, still resulting in unprotected species. The solution we present represents on average 26.8-42.5% of the species distribution, including the entire set of species analyzed and effectively representing more than 91% of the tetrapods at greatest risk. Opportunity costs shifted priorities to areas less affected by human activities, mainly reducing the representation of threatened species. By focusing in the conservation of plants and its taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic dimensions together with ecosystem services, we observed, in the third chapter, that APs and ILs cover an average of 16.9% of the distribution of analyzed species, in addition to an average of 8.0% of the distribution of regulation services and 11.2% of the distribution of support services. According to the proposals of the MMA and CNCFlora, networks of priority areas whose territorial extension is close to the goal of protecting 30% of the biome can improve this representation, but with an increase in the spatial cost. Focusing on the conservation of threatened flora, the CNCFlora proposal represents the lowest mean distribution of the analyzed plants than the networks proposed by the MMA, which included different targets in addition to the plants. Aiming to protect 30% of the Caatinga, our solutions represented an average of over 60% of the species distribution, increasing up to 85% the representation of the most risky plants. Consequently, these solutions are more cost-effective in terms of area demand. Consequently, these solutions are more cost-effective in terms of area demand when compared to existing prioritizations. All evaluated networks represented ecosystem services in a homogeneous way, probably due to their wide distribution in the Caatinga. At the biome scale, species richness and phylogenetic and functional diversities were close to the maximum value (90-100%) in all analyzed networks. On the scale of planning units (ca. 30km²), however, our solutions concentrated the highest averages of these metrics. As noted in the second chapter, focusing on vertebrates, the inclusion of opportunity costs marginally reduced the representation of flora species in the selected areas. Overall, our solutions were able to represent biodiversity and ecosystem services. We therefore conclude that the optimal use of available information, through an approach that integrates different conservation targets, helps to support efficient conservation planning. In a region where people rely heavily on nature, improving conservation benefits becomes urgent. In this context, our multi-dimensional integrative approach can contribute to supporting more pragmatic and efficient conservation strategies in other vulnerable and little-known biomes, improving the protecting species in all dimensions of their biodiversity, in addition to protection of the ecosystem services.

Objetivamos nesse estudo avaliar a resposta da riqueza taxonômica e diversidade funcional de plantas lenhosas da Mata Atlântica frente a perda do habitat florestal na escala da paisagem. Esse estudo foi realizado em 11 paisagens de 6 x 6 km (36 km2) com diferentes proporções de cobertura florestal (entre 5% e 60%) na Mata Atlântica do Estado da Bahia. Foram estabelecidas oito parcelas de 250 m2 aleatoriamente escolhidas em cada paisagem, e amostrados ramos de todos os indivíduos lenhosos com circunferência acima do peito (CAP) igual ou superior a 8 cm. A classificação das espécies por característica funcional foi baseada em livros, dissertações, teses, artigos científicos e banco de dados ecológicos virtuais. A redução da cobertura florestal na escala da paisagem influenciou negativamente as riquezas taxonômica e funcional e, essas relações foram não lineares. A uniformidade funcional não foi influenciada pela quantidade de floresta na paisagem. Já a divergência funcional foi positivamente influenciada pela redução da cobertura florestal na paisagem. As características funcionais apresentaram respostas distintas a quantidade de floresta na paisagem. As características funcionais associadas as plantas climácicas foram fortemente e negativamente influenciadas pela perda de cobertura florestal. Em contraste, as características funcionais associadas a plantas generalistas sobressaíram-se nas paisagens menos florestadas. Contudo, ressaltamos que até mesmo as paisagens menos florestadas ainda detêm parte significativa da flora lenhosa da Mata Atlântica e podem ser importantes fontes de sequestro de carbono devendo ser consideradas nas políticas de manejos da biodiversidade da Mata Atlântica. Habitat loss is the main cause of the continued loss of biodiversity worldwide. Fundamentally, it is increasingly clear that losses in forest cover at landscape scales result in substantial changes in a series of ecological processes and ecosystem functions that ultimately determine the future trajectory of many of the most diverse and threatened forests in the world. The objective of this study is to evaluate the response of the taxonomic richness and functional diversity of woody plants to habitat loss at the landscape scale in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. This study was carried out in eleven landscapes of 6 x 6 km (36 km2) with different proportions of forest cover (between 5% and 60%) in the Atlantic Forest of Bahia. Eight plots of 250 m2 were established randomly chosen in each landscape, and branches of all woody individuals with a circumference above the chest (CAP) equal to or greater than 8 cm were sampled. The classification of species by functional characteristic was based on books, dissertations, theses, scientific articles and virtual ecological database. The reduction of forest cover on the landscape scale negatively influences taxonomic and functional richness, and these relationships were non-linear. Functional uniformity was not influenced by the amount of forest in the landscape. Functional divergence was positively influenced by the reduction of forest cover in the landscape. The functional characteristics showed different responses to the amount of forest in the landscape. The functional characteristics associated with climatic plants were strongly and negatively influenced by the loss of forest cover. In contrast, the functional characteristics associated with generalist plants stood out in less forested landscapes. However, we emphasize that even the least forested landscapes still hold a significant part of the woody flora of the Atlantic Forest and can be important sources of carbon sequestration and should be considered in the management policies of the biodiversity of the Atlantic Forest.

No Brasil, considerando as Unidades de Conservação e as Terras Indígenas, mais de 2,5 milhões de km² do território são designados como áreas protegidas (APs). No entanto, estudos que avaliam a efetividade da rede de APs no Brasil em proteger a biodiversidade são limitados, a despeito da importância global do país para a conservação. No presente estudo, nós usamos uma abordagem contrafactual para testar a efetividade da rede de proteção brasileira de 1.082 APs terrestres em evitar a destruição da vegetação natural entre 1985 e 2018. Além disso, testamos o efeito das APs nas suas zonas de amortecimento. Constatamos que cerca de 85,3% das APs são mais eficazes do que as áreas não protegidas e, em média, a razão entre a quantidade de vegetação perdida nas APs, e aquela perdida em áreas não protegidas semelhantes é de 1:4. Entre os biomas, a Amazônia tem as APs mais efetivas, embora algumas das APs menos eficazes também estejam localizadas ali. As Terras Indígenas aparecem como a categoria mais eficaz de APs. Além disso, a efetividade está positivamente correlacionada com o tamanho, e APs mais antigas se mostraram mais efetivas. Também descobrimos que geralmente o efeito positivo dos APs se estende além das suas fronteiras oficiais. Como consequência da presença de APs, mais de 10.000 km² de vegetação natural foram poupados de conversão e anualmente mais de 9 Tg de carbono deixaram de ser emitidos para a atmosfera. Mostramos aqui que as APs desempenham um papel estratégico no Brasil e no mundo ao proteger efetivamente a vegetação natural e, consequentemente, a biodiversidade e os serviços ecossistêmicos, contribuindo para o bem-estar das pessoas no mundo.

Este fenômeno foi reconhecido em diversos ecossistemas e, com frequência, os cientistas apontam as atividades humanas como causadoras da mudança de fase. Contudo, as reações das comunidades em mudança de fase à distúrbios antrópicos vêm sendo negligenciadas pela comunidade acadêmica. Nas últimas décadas, ondas de calor resultantes das mudanças climáticas têm se tornado cada vez mais frequentes e intensas, afetando especialmente os recifes de coral. Como resultado, eventos de branqueamento em massa de corais estão se tornando cada vez mais recorrentes, sendo reconhecidos como a principal causa do declínio das populações de corais nos ecossistemas recifais em escala global. Em 2019, uma onda de calor sem precedentes atingiu o Atlântico Sul causando branqueamento em massa de corais nos recifes da Baía de Todos os Santos (BTS), em recifes dominados por corais e dominados por zoantídeos, com uma elevação de temperatura das águas superficiais nunca registrada em uma série histórica de 34 anos. Nós analisamos os efeitos desta anomalia térmica sobre a resistência dos recifes da BTS em mudança de fase para a dominância do zoantídeo Palythoa cf. variabilis. Utilizando dados de cobertura bentônica de 2003, 2007, 2011, 2017 e 2019, analisamos 6 recifes da BTS: 3 em condições desejáveis (dominados por corais) e 3 em condições indesejáveis (dominados por Palythoa cf. variabilis). Para cada recife, estimamos a cobertura de corais, de zoantídeos, de P. cf. variabilis e de Palythoa caribaeorum e o branqueamento de corais e de P. cf. variabilis. Houve redução na cobertura de corais em recifes normais no período anterior à anomalia térmica de 2019, porém, não houve variação significativa após a onda de calor e a estrutura da comunidade destes recifes não foi alterada. Nos recifes em mudança de fase, a cobertura de zoantídeos não se alterou significativamente no período anterior ao evento de 2019, porém, após este evento, houve redução na cobertura destes organismos nestes recifes. Nosso trabalho revelou que a resistência da comunidade em mudança de fase foi quebrada e sua estrutura foi alterada, indicando que os recifes nesta condição foram mais suscetíveis ao distúrbio do branqueamento do que os recifes normais.

Para entendermos como as características da paisagem afetam espacialmente a estrutura genética populacional, propomos a criação de superfícies de resistência utilizando uma abordagem de Modelagem Orientada pelo Padrão da divergência genética (FST) entre as populações de baru (Dipteryx alata), uma árvore amplamente distribuída na região do Cerrado do Brasil Central. Para compor as superfícies de resistência, utilizamos camadas de uso da terra na área em que as 25 populações de baru em estudo estão inseridas. Geramos 10 mil superfícies de resistência com valores de custo aleatorizados entre 0 e 100 em intervalos de 1. Usamos essas superfícies para calcular matrizes de resistência efetiva par-a-par com o circuitscape, um programa que calcula os valores de resistência fazendo uma analogia entre a conectividade elétrica e os dados genéticos da espécie em estudo. Calculamos testes de Mantel e suas variações entre o FST e cada uma das matrizes de resistências. A correlação do FST par-a-par com a distância geográfica, foi de 0,48. Para a correlação entre FST par a par e as matrizes de resistência, os testes de Mantel resultaram em coeficientes de correlação variando entre r = -0,2019 e r = 0,6736. Usamos a regressão múltipla de matrizes para seleção dos melhores modelos pelo critério de Akaike (AIC). Três modelos foram selecionados como sendo os que contém os parâmetros que melhor explicam a divergência genética pelo critério de Akaike com ΔAIC menor que 3. Os valores ΔAIC foram usados para calcular o peso do AIC em cada modelo (wi) e foram utilizados para avaliar a contribuição individual de cada parâmetro nas superfícies selecionadas. Modelos selecionados sugerem que as áreas com menor resistência são as caracterizadas por Cerrado de Savana Arbóreo Densa (cerradão) e Savana Gramíneo Lenhosa (campo limpo). As estradas, grandes rios e áreas agrícolas do Cerrado causam maior resistência. To understand how landscape features spatially affect the genetic structure of a population , we propose the creation of resistance surfaces using an approach Pattern Oriented Modeling of genetic divergence (FST parwise) among baru populations (Dipteryx alata). To compose the resistance surface, we employed land use layers in an area of 25 baru populations, generating 10000 resistance surfaces with randomized cost values between 0 and 100. We use these surfaces to calculate matrices pairwise effective resistance to the circuitscap. Mantel test and its variations revealed a correlation of FST parwise with geographical distance of 0.48. The correlation between FST pairwise and the resistance matrices ranged between r = -0.2019 and r= 0.6736. We used multiple regression matrices to select the best (most satisfactory) models through Akaike (AIC). Three models were selected to contain the parameters that best explain the genetic divergence with ΔAIC below three. The ΔAIC values were used to calculate the AIC-weight (WI) and evaluate the individual contribution of each parameter in the selected surfaces. The selected models suggest that the areas with lower resistance are characterized as Savanna Arboreo Dense and Savanna Grassy Woody.
