Abstract

With the construction of the European Spallation Source, a remarkable opportunity has emerged to conduct high sensitivity searches for neutron oscillations, including a first search for thirty years for free neutrons converting to antineutrons. Furthermore, searches can be made for transitions of neutrons and antineutrons to sterile neutron states. Upgrades to the ESS infrastructure allow an improved HIBEAM design that would provide an increase in sensitivity by an order of magnitude compared to previous work. The HIBEAM program focuses on processes that violate baryon number by one or two units. The observation of a process satisfying one of the Sakharov conditions addresses the open question of the origin of the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. Sterile neutron states would belong to a `dark' sector of particles which may explain dark matter. As electrically neutral, meta-stable objects that can be copiously produced and studied, neutrons represent an attractive portal to a `dark' sector. The HIBEAM instrument can also be utilised for other purposes such as direct searches for ultralight axion dark matter. This paper describes the capability, design, infrastructure, and potential of the HIBEAM program. Abstract

The NNBAR experiment for the European Spallation Source will search for free neutrons converting to antineutrons with a sensitivity improvement of three orders of magnitude compared to the last such search. This paper describes progress towards a conceptual design report for NNBAR. The design of a moderator, neutron reflector, beamline, shielding and annihilation detector is reported. Abstract

The European Spallation Source (ESS), presently under construction in Lund, Sweden, is a multidisciplinary international laboratory that will operate the world's most powerful pulsed neutron source. Supported by a 3M Euro Research and Innovation Action within the EU Horizon 2020 program, a design study (HighNESS) is now underway to develop a second neutron source below the spallation target. Compared to the first source, located above the spallation target and designed for high cold and thermal brightness, the new source will provide higher intensity, and a shift to longer wavelengths in the spectral regions of cold (2 /- 20 {\AA}), very cold (VCN, 10 /- 120 {\AA}), and ultra cold (UCN, > 500 {\AA}) neutrons. The core of the second source will consist of a large liquid deuterium moderator to deliver a high flux of cold neutrons and to serve secondary VCN and UCN sources, for which different options are under study. The features of these new sources will boost several areas of condensed matter research and will provide unique opportunities in fundamental physics. Part of the HighNESS project is also dedicated to the development of future instruments that will make use of the new source and will complement the initial suite of instruments in construction at ESS. Abstract

The European Spallation Source, which is under construction in Lund, Sweden, aims to be the world's brightest source of neutrons. During the first phase of construction, users will have access to a suite of 15 instruments, which will produce neutrons through a butterfly-shaped moderator system located above the spallation target. The HighNESS project, funded by the European Union Horizon 2020 program, has the goal of providing a new design for the second moderator, which will be situated below the spallation target and will be the most intense neutron source in the world. The new moderator will provide a higher intensity of neutrons in the cold, very cold, and ultracold energy regions, which will advance research in several areas of condensed matter and offer unique opportunities in fundamental physics. Work Package 2 of the HighNESS project is focused on supporting the design of the second moderator by providing nuclear data support for neutronics calculations and improving the accompanying physics software. This paper showcases recent advancements in NJOY + NCrystal, a tool for creating thermal neutron scattering-evaluated nuclear data files and continued work on nanodiamonds as advanced neutron reflectors.

Abstract

Presently under construction in Lund, Sweden, the European Spallation Source (ESS) will be the world's brightest neutron source. As such, it has the potential for a particle physics program with a unique reach and which is complementary to that available at other facilities. This paper describes proposed particle physics activities for the ESS. These encompass the exploitation of both the neutrons and neutrinos produced at the ESS for high precision (sensitivity) measurements (searches).

9. NJOY+NCrystal: An open-source tool for creating thermal neutron scattering libraries with mixed elastic support

Abstract

In this work we present NJOY+NCrystal, a tool to generate thermal neutron scattering libraries with support for coherent and incoherent elastic components for crystalline solid materials. This tool, which is a customized version of NJOY, was created by modifying the nuclear data processing program NJOY to call the thermal scattering software library NCrystal, and includes a proposed change in the ENDF-6 format to store both the coherent and incoherent elastic components. Necessary changes to enable this format in NJOY, as well as to sample it in the OpenMC Monte Carlo code, are detailed here. Examples of materials that are coherent–dominant, incoherent–dominant, and mixed elastic scatterers are presented, as well as the creation of novel libraries for MgH2 and MgD2, that are under consideration as advanced neutron reflectors in the HighNESS project at the European Spallation Source. NJOY+NCrystal greatly simplifies the process to generate thermal scattering libraries (TSL) and this is exemplified with 213 new and updated TSL evaluations.

Abstract

The European Spallation Source (ESS), presently under construction in Lund, Sweden, is a multidisciplinary international laboratory that will operate the world’s most powerful pulsed neutron source. Supported by a 3M Euro Research and Innovation Action within the EU Horizon 2020 program, a design study (HighNESS) is now underway to develop a second neutron source below the spallation target. Compared to the first source, located above the spallation target and designed for high cold and thermal brightness, the new source will provide higher intensity, and a shift to longer wavelengths in the spectral regions of cold (2-20 Å), very cold (VCN, 10-120 Å), and ultra cold (UCN, > 500 Å) neutrons. The core of the second source will consist of a large liquid deuterium moderator to deliver a high flux of cold neutrons and to serve secondary VCN and UCN sources, for which different options are under study. The features of these new sources will boost several areas of condensed matter research and will provide unique opportunities in fundamental physics. Part of the HighNESS project is also dedicated to the development of future instruments that will make use of the new source and will complement the initial suite of instruments in construction at ESS. The HighNESS project started in October 2020. In this paper, the ongoing developments and the results obtained in the first year are described.

Abstract

The European Spallation Source, which is currently under construction in Lund, Sweden, is designed to be the brightest source of neutrons and in the first phase users will have access to a suite of 15 instruments, where the neutrons will be provided by a butterfly shaped moderator system, placed above the spallation target. The goal of the HighNESS project, which is funded by the EU Horizon 2020 program, is to provide a new design for the second moderator, situated below the spallation target, which will be the most intense neutron source in the world. The new moderator will provide a higher intensity of neutrons in the cold, very cold and ultracold energy regions. The features of this new source will boost several areas of condensed matter research and also will provide unique opportunities in fundamental physics. To support the design of the second moderator, the goal of Work Package 2 of the project is to provide nuclear data support for the neutronics calculations, as well as the accompanying software development for improved physics. In this paper, the recent advancements on NJOY+NCrystal, a novel tool for creation of thermal neutron scattering evaluated nuclear data files will be shown, as well as some continued work on nanodiamonds as advanced neutron reflectors.

Abstract

The European Spallation Source (ESS), presently under construction in Lund, Sweden, is a multidisciplinary international laboratory that, once completed at full specifications, will operate the world’s most powerful pulsed neutron source. Supported by a 3 M Euro Research and Innovation Action within the European Union Horizon 2020 program, a design study (HighNESS) is now underway to develop a second neutron source located below the spallation target. Compared to the first source, which is located above the spallation target and designed for high cold and thermal brightness, the new source is being optimized to deliver higher intensity and a shift to longer wavelengths in the spectral regions of cold neutrons (CNs) (2 to 20 Å), very cold neutrons (VCNs) (10 to 120 Å), and ultracold neutrons (UCNs) (>500 Å). The second source consists of a large liquid deuterium moderator to deliver CNs and serve secondary VCN and UCN sources, for which different options are under study. These new sources will boost several areas of condensed matter research and will provide unique opportunities in fundamental physics. The HighNESS project is now entering its last year, and we are working toward the Conceptual Design Report of the ESS upgrade. In this paper, results obtained in the first 2 years, ongoing developments, and future perspectives are described.

Abstract

The NNBAR experiment for the European Spallation Source will search for free neutrons converting to antineutrons with a sensitivity improvement of three orders of magnitude compared to the last such search. This paper describes progress towards a conceptual design report for NNBAR. The design of a moderator, neutron reflector, beamline, shielding and annihilation detector is reported. The simulations used form part of a model which will be used for optimisation of the experiment design and quantification of its sensitivity.

Abstract

Coulomb-excitation experiments are performed with postaccelerated beams of neutron-deficient Po-196,Po-198,Po-200,Po-202 isotopes at the REX-ISOLDE facility. A set of matrix elements, coupling the low-lying states in these isotopes, is extracted. In the two heaviest isotopes, Po-196,Po-198, the transitional and diagonal matrix elements of the 2(1)(+) state are determined. In Po-196,Po-198 multistep Coulomb excitation is observed, populating the 4(1)(+), 0(2)(+), and 2(2)(+) states. The experimental results are compared to the results from the measurement of mean-square charge radii in polonium isotopes, confirming the onset of deformation from Po-196 onwards. Three model descriptions are used to compare to the data. Calculations with the beyond-mean-field model, the interacting boson model, and the general Bohr Hamiltonian model show partial agreement with the experimental data. Finally, calculations with a phenomenological two-level mixing model hint at the mixing of a spherical structure with a weakly deformed rotational structure.

Abstract

Presently under construction in Lund, Sweden, the European Spallation Source (ESS) will be the world's brightest neutron source. As such, it has the potential for a particle physics program with a unique reach and which is complementary to that available at other facilities. This paper describes proposed particle physics activities for the ESS. Abstract

In this work we present NJOY+NCrystal, a tool to generate thermal neutron scattering libraries with support for coherent and incoherent elastic components for crystalline solid materials. This tool, which is a customized version of NJOY, was created by modifying the nuclear data processing program NJOY to call the thermal scattering software library NCrystal, and includes a proposed change in the ENDF-6 format to store both the coherent and incoherent elastic components. Necessary changes to enable this format in NJOY, as well as to sample it in the OpenMC Monte Carlo code, are detailed here. Examples of materials that are coherent–dominant, incoherent–dominant, and mixed elastic scatterers are presented, as well as the creation of novel libraries for MgH2 and MgD2, that are under consideration as advanced neutron reflectors in the HighNESS project at the European Spallation Source. NJOY+NCrystal greatly simplifies the process to generate thermal scattering libraries (TSL) and this is exemplified with 213 new and updated TSL evaluations.

Abstract

GTP-binding proteins were identified in rat parotid acinar plasma-enriched membranes (PM) by immunoblot analysis and localized immunohistochemically in the parotid gland as well as in other exocrine glands by using affinity-purified antisera specific for alpha subunits of the G proteins. Isolated rat parotid acinar PM immunoreacted strongly to antisera directed against Gs alpha, Gi alpha 1/alpha 2, Gi alpha 3, and Go alpha; the signal for Go alpha, however, was weak with crude Go antisera. Immunohistochemical studies to identify and localize Go in rat parotid tissue revealed that antisera to Go alpha immunoreacted with ductal cells. In addition, strong immunoreactivity to Go alpha antisera was noted in ductal cells of other salivary glands including rat submandibular, mouse parotid, and mouse submandibular glands. Light labeling of rat parotid and submandibular gland acinar cells was also noted. In contrast, in the rat and mouse pancreas, Go antisera immunoreacted primarily with islet cells. Ductal cells were negative, but there was light labeling of rat pancreatic acinar cells. The apparent ductal specificity of Go alpha staining was further verified by demonstrating that Go alpha antisera immunoreacted strongly with HSG-PA cells, a human transformed salivary ductal cell line. The results demonstrate that rat parotid acinar plasma membranes express a number of G proteins including Go and that Go appears to be selectively expressed in the ductal cells of rat parotid gland and other salivary glands. The selective enrichment of Go in ductal cells suggests that this G protein may play an important role in ductal cell physiology.
