Objectives Australian guidelines recommend people aged 50 to 70-years-old, consider taking low-dose aspirin to reduce their risk of colorectal cancer. The aim was to design sex-specific decision aids (DAs) with clinician and consumer input including expected frequency trees (EFTs) to communicate risks and benefits of taking aspirin. Methods Semi-structured interviews were conducted with clinicians. Focus groups were conducted with consumers. The interview schedules covered ease of comprehension, design, potential effects on decision making, and approaches to implementation of the DAs. Thematic analysis was employed; independent coding by two researchers was inductive. Themes were developed through consensus between authors. Results Sixty-four clinician were interviewed over six-months in 2019. Twelve consumers, aged 50 to 70 years, participated in two focus groups in February and March 2020.

A new species of the genus Tanna Distant, 1905 (Hemiptera: Cicadidae), Tanna crassa sp. nov., is described from Vietnam. Some taxonomic changes are made in Tanna. Tanna simultaneous (Chen, 1940) syn. nov. is synonymized with Tanna abdominalis (Kato, 1938). Tanna obliqua Liu, 1940 stat. rev. is resurrected from the junior synonym of Tanna auripennis Kato, 1930. Tanna shensiensis (Sanborn, 2006) is transferred to Aetanna Lee, 2014 to become Aetanna shensiensis (Sanborn, 2006) comb. nov. BackgroundAmong protozoan parasites in the genus Babesia, Babesia bigemina is endemic and widespread in the East African region while the status of the more pathogenic Babesia bovis remains unclear despite the presence of the tick vector, Rhipicephalus microplus which transmits both species. Recent studies have confirmed the occurrence of R. microplus in coastal Kenya and although B. bovis DNA has previously been detected in cattle blood in Kenya, no surveillance has been done to establish its prevalence. This study therefore investigated the occurrence of B. bovis in cattle in Kwale County, Kenya, where R. microplus is present in large numbers. MethodA quantitative species-specific multiplex Taqman PCR assay targeting two Babesia bovis genes, 18S ribosomal RNA and mitochondrially-encoded cytochrome b and Babesia bigemina cytochrome b gene was used to screen 506 cattle blood DNA samples collected from Kwale County for presence of Babesia parasite DNA. ResultsA total of 131 animals (25.8%) were found to have bovine babesiosis. Of these, 87 (17.2%) were positive for B. bovis while 70 (13.8%) had B. bigemina while 26 (5.1%) were observed to be co-infected with both Babesia species. A total of 61 animals (12.1%) were found to be infected with B. bovis parasites only, while 44 animals (8.7%) had B. bigemina only. B. bovis infections were detected in 11 sites while B. bigemina was detected in 9 out of the 12 sites sampled in three Kwale sub-Counties.ConclusionThese findings reveal high prevalence of pathogenic B. bovis in a Kenyan area cutting across a busy transboundary livestock trade route with neighboring Tanzania. The Babesia multiplex assay used in this study is specific and can detect and differentiate the two Babesia species and should be used for routine B. bovis surveillance to monitor the spread and establishment of the pathogen in other African countries where B. bigemina is endemic. Moreover, these findings reveal a potential threat of fatal babesiosis in the absence of endemic stability in the local cattle populations.

Authoritative film archival texts demand documentation of film restoration projects. Film archives often produce overly technical internal documentation, and although researchers occasionally publish film restoration reports, the ratio of reports to restoration projects is skewed in favour of films that stir academic debate. Film scholars can be recruited to engage with archives to write reports for lesser-known films, thereby increasing and improving film restoration documentation. However, the relationship between film scholars and film archivists must be improved, as these groups tend not to interact during the film restoration process. Based on a survey of 30 silent film restoration reports, a guide is provided to help film scholars approach archives and archivists to attain information for those reports. The guide is applied to Gräfin Küchenfee (1918), a silent film restored by EYE Filmmuseum for Il Cinema Ritrovato, to showcase usage of the guide and produce a report on the film’s restoration.

The current study evaluated the cardioprotective effect of the aqueous extract of seeds ofDatura metel(AESDM) on the acute cardiotoxicity induced with doxorubicin in the Wistar rats. Indeed, 30 rats have been randomized then, divided into 6 groups of 5 animals each: 3 control groups (normal, negative and positive) and 3 test groups (AESDM 100, 200 and 300 mg/kg). These animals received orally, six consecutive days, 1 mL/200 g distilled water (normal and negative control), 100 mg/kg Vitamin-E (positive control), AESDM at 100, 200 and 300 mg/kg (test groups). On the seventh day of treatment, animals in the different groups excepted the normal control received a single intraperitoneal injection of 15 mg/kg doxorubicin followed respective treatments up to the tenth day of the trial period. Serum parameters (ASAT/ALAT), biochemical markers of oxidative stress (MDA, SOD, CAT, GSH) and lipid parameters (total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL and LDL) were evaluated. Histological sections of animal hearts were prepared. The results of this study showed that treatment with AESDM resulted in a significant decrease (P ˂ 0.001) in MDA, triglycerides and LDL-cholesterol levels, ASAT/ALAT activity and a significant increase (P ˂ 0.001) in HDL-cholesterol concentration and SOD, CAT and GSH activities, compared to the negative control. Histological observation revealed that AESDM protected the heart from doxorubicin-induced damage. In conclusion, AESDM would have a cardioprotective effect that could be attributed to its antioxidant potential.&nbsp

Background: In regions with endemic Theileria orientalis, recovered cattle are carriers, leaving newborn calves and introduced stock as the most susceptible groups to develop clinical disease after tick infestation. Methods: To gain information on the kinetics of infestation and development and effects of parasitosis by virulent Theilerial genotypes ikeda and chitose and the “benign” genotype, buffeli, this study sampled at total of 150 calves from 3 farms in Dorrigo, Australia, a region with multiple genotypes of the parasite. In addition, 30 introduced beef weaners were bled and weighed for 6 months after arrival. Results: In both cohorts, parasitosis with the T.orientalis ikeda and chitose (genotypes 1 & 2) occurred within 3-4 weeks in >95% of the groups, with maximal gene copies generated around 5-7 weeks after birth or introduction, before declining. In contrast, parasitosis with T.orientalis buffeli (genotype 3), increased slowly, with around 80% of the population testing positive by PCR after 4 months. The parasitosis with the buffeli genotype did not exceed 40000 gene copies /ul and was similar to those exhibited by ikeda and chitose genotypes following the “first wave of parasitaemia” as cattle entered the carrier state. In the 30 introduced weaners, the early parasitosis with T.orientalis ikeda and chitose also caused significant reductions in haematocrit and incurred around 20Kg loss in weight gain; the latter had not been recovered by 6 months after introduction. Conclusions: The results support previous findings in other endemic regions of Theileriosis, but imply that amelioration of the early high levels of parasitosis by the virulent genotypes could reduce the initial impact of Theileriosis on production, which appears much less affected once animals enter the carrier state.

Background: An investigation aimed to confirm whether immunisation with the “benign” buffeli genotype of Theileria orientalis could reduce the parasitosis of the virulent ikeda genotype. Methods: Calves were inoculated intravenously or subcutaneously with bovine blood containing merozoites of T.orientalis buffeli. When recipients became positive, they and control animals were challenged with unfed nymphs of Haemaphysalis longicornis ticks infested as larvae with T.orientalis ikeda. Results: All calves became positive for the challenge within 12 days after tick application. In the immunised calves, the first wave of parasitosis with T.orientalis ikeda from 4-6 weeks was reduced significantly by >80% before the infestation declined into the carrier state by 9 weeks. Conclusions: The results confirm the field experience with theileriosis in endemic zones where the carrier state appears to prevent clinical disease despite repeated, seasonal tick infestations with virulent genotypes of the parasite. This method offers a means to reduce the severity of the first wave of theilerial parasitosis after tick challenge and recover associated production losses.

Background The tick vector Rhipicephalus microplus which transmits Babesia spp. and rickettsial pathogens has not been reported in Kenya since 1998. More recently, the pathogenic Babesia bovis has been detected in cattle blood DNA. The status of R. microplus in Kenya remains unknown. This study employed morphological and molecular tools to characterize R. microplus originating from Kenya and assess the genetic relationships between Kenyan and other African R. microplus genotypes. Methods Ticks were collected in south-eastern Kenya (Kwale County) from cattle and characterized to investigate the existence of R. microplus. Genetic and phylogenetic relationships between the Kenyan and other annotated R. microplus reference sequences was investigated by analysis of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene. To further characterize Kenyan ticks, we generated low coverage whole genome sequences of two R. microplus, one R. decoloratus and R. appendiculatus. A B. bovis specific TaqMan probe qPCR assay was used to detect B. bovis in gDNA from R. microplus ticks. Results Occurrence of R. microplus was confirmed in Kwale County, Kenya. The Kenyan R. microplus cox1 sequences showed very high pairwise identities (> 99%) and clustered very closely with reference African R. microplus sequences. We found a low genetic variation and lack of geographical sub-structuring among the African cox1 sequences of R. microplus. Four complete mitochondrial (mt) genomes for two R. microplus, one R. decoloratus and one R. appendiculatus were assembled from next generation sequence data. The mitochondrial genome sequences of the two Kenyan R. microplus ticks clustered closely with reference genome sequences from Brazil, USA, Cambodia and India forming R. microplus Clade A. No B. bovis was detected in the Kwale R. microplus DNA. Conclusions These findings confirm the presence of R. microplus in Kenya and suggest that R. microplus Clade A is prevalent in cattle in sub-Saharan Africa. These and other recent findings of widespread occurrence of R. microplus in Africa provide a strong justification for urgent surveillance to determine and monitor the spread of R. microplus and vector competence of Boophilus ticks for B. bovis in Africa, with the ultimate goal of strategic control.

This review addresses the research landscape regarding vaccines against scour worms, particularly Trichostrongylus spp. and Teladorsagia circumcincta. The inability of past research to deliver scour-worm vaccines with reliable and reproducible efficacy has been due in part to gaps in knowledge concerning: (i) host-parasite interactions leading to development of type-2 immunity, (ii) definition of an optimal suite of parasite antigens, and (iii) rational formulation and administration to induce protective immunity against gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) at the site of infestation. Recent 'omics' developments enable more systematic analyses. GIN genomes are reaching completion, facilitating "reverse vaccinology" approaches that have been used successfully for the Rhipicephalus australis vaccine for cattle tick, while methods for gene silencing and editing in GIN enable identification and validation of potential vaccine antigens. We envisage that any efficacious scour worm vaccine(s) would be adopted similarly to "Barbervax™" within integrated parasite management schemes. Vaccines would therefore effectively parallel the use of resistant animals, and reduce the frequency of drenching and pasture contamination. These aspects of integration, efficacy and operation require updated models and validation in the field. The conclusion of this review outlines an approach to facilitate an integrated research program.

Genetic and phylogenetic relationships between the Kenyan and other annotated R. microplus reference sequences was investigated by analysis of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. The complete mitochondrial (mt) genome of four tick specimens which included two R. microplus was assembled from whole genome data to further characterize the Kenyan ticks. A B. bovis specific Taqman probe qPCR assay was used to detect B. bovis in gDNA from R. microplus ticks. Results Of the 35 Kwale tick specimens analysed, 23 were confirmed to be R. microplus by both morphology and molecular characterizations. The Kenyan R. microplus COI sequences showed very high pairwise identities (>99%) and clustered very closely with reference African sequences. We also found a low differentiation and lack of geographical sub-structuring among the African COI sequences. The mitochondrial genome sequences of the two Kenyan R. microplus ticks also clustered closely with reference genome sequences from Brazil, USA, Cambodia and India. No B. bovis was detected in the Kwale R. microplus DNA. Conclusions These findings confirm the presence of R. microplus in Kenya and suggest that a common undifferentiated genotype is prevalent in cattle in Africa. These and other recent findings of widespread occurrence of R. microplus in Africa provide a strong justification for urgent surveillance to determine and monitor the spread of R. microplus and vector competence of Rhipicephalid ticks for B. bovis in Africa, with the ultimate goal of strategic control.

This method offers a means to reduce the severity of the first wave of theilerial parasitaemia after tick challenge and possibly recover associated production losses.

Integrated parasite management (IPM) for pests, pathogens and parasites involves reducing or breaking transmission to reduce the impact of infection or infestation. For Theileria orientalis, the critical impact of infection is the first wave of parasitaemia from the virulent genotypes, Ikeda and Chitose, associated with the sequelae from the development of anaemia. Therefore, current control measures for T. orientalis advocate excluding the movement of naïve stock from non-endemic regions into infected areas and controlling the tick Haemaphysalislongicornis, the final host. In Australia, treatment of established infection is limited to supportive therapy. To update and expand these options, this review examines progress towards prevention and therapy for T. orientalis, which are key elements for inclusion in IPM measures to control this parasite.

Highlights • Conditions for the optimal generation interval for the “bush tick”, Haemaphysalis longicornis, in Australia have been determined. • Stabilates containing infective sporozoites of Theileria orientalis ikeda were produced from ground-up ticks (GUTS) and salivary glands of H.longicornis. • Sporozoites of Theileria orientalis required around 3–5 days of tick feeding to mature in salivary glands before transmission occurred (like T.parva). • GUTS and salivary gland stabilates produced detectable infections with T.orientalis in naive calves around 3–4 weeks after inoculation. • This study confirms the final host status of H.longicornis for T.orientalis in Australia, facilitating research for prophylaxis and vector control., The intracellular protozoal parasite Theileria orientalis ikeda has rapidly spread across South-eastern Australia since 2006, causing deaths and production losses in cattle. The 3-host “bush tick” Haemaphysalis longicornis (Neumann) appears the principal biological vector in the endemic regions. To generate sufficient numbers of ticks to produce stabilate for infection to confirm vector competency and for acaricide trials, the optimal conditions and stage-specific intervals for the generational life-cycle of H.longicornis was defined on two dogs and two steers. To determine whether H.longicornis was a definitive host for Theileria orientalis, nymphal stages were fed on a steer infected with T.orientalis and moulted adults were permitted to feed for 3 days on an uninfected calf prior to harvest. Subsequent detection of infection after inoculation of four naïve calves with stabilate produced from ground-up adult ticks or dissected salivary glands confirmed H.longicornis as one final (definitive) host for T.orientalis in Australia.

Despite the global distribution of the brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Latreille, 1806) sensu lato (s.l.), limited information exists about their identity from the Arabian Peninsula. Ticks from free roaming urban dogs and dromedary camels in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia were morphologically identified, confirmed with scanning electron microscopy and characterised at mitochondrial DNA (cox1, 12S rDNA and 16S rDNA). A total of 186 ticks were collected from 65 free roaming dogs (n = 73) and 84 dromedary camels (n = 113). Morphologically, 5.9% (11/186) were R. sanguineus s.l. and Hyalomma spp. (93.5%, 174/186). From within R. sanguineus s.l., the presence of Rhipicephalus cf. camicasi Morel, Mouchet et Rodhain, 1976 (1 dog, 2 camels) and Rhipicephalus turanicus Pomerantsev, 1936 (1 camel) is reported. The examined R. cf. camicasi form a sister group to R. sanguineus s.l. tropical lineage at all DNA markers. Dogs were parasitised by Hyalomma dromedarii Koch, 1844 (n = 59), Hyalomma impeltatum Schulze et Schlottke, 1930 (n = 1), Hyalomma excavatum Koch, 1844 (n = 2), Hyalomma turanicum Pomerantsev, 1946 (n = 1) and Hyalomma rufipes Koch,1844 (n = 1). DNA from dog blood (n = 53) from Riyadh confirmed a low prevalence of canine vector-borne pathogens that does not exceed 5.7% for Babesia spp., Mycoplasma spp., Anaplasma platys, Hepatozoon canis and Ehrlichia canis using multiplexed tandem PCR (MT-PCR) and diagnostic PCR. Low prevalence of R. sanguineus s.l. on dogs likely contributed to the low level of canine vector-borne pathogens in Saudi Arabia. We demonstrate that dogs in the central Arabian Peninsula are more commonly parasitised by Hyalomma spp. than R. sanguineus s.l.

The diagnosis, monitoring and flukicide efficacy testing of fasciolosis on-farm is reliant on non-terminal methods. The coproantigen ELISA (cELISA) has been recommended for diagnosis of fasciolosis and associated flukicide efficacy testing as an alternative to fluke egg counts for monitoring parasitism. Recently experimental multi-age infections have suggested that the reliability of efficacy results can be improved by a second cELISA testing at 6 weeks post-treatment (wpt) in addition to the generally accepted 1 wpt. A field study was conducted to determine the suitability of faecal fluke egg counts (FFEC) and cELISA as diagnostic, drug efficacy testing and epidemiological tools on Australian sheep and cattle farms. Faecal samples from sheep and/or cattle on three endemic farms were taken at monthly intervals for 12 months and examined by both methods. Normal farm management was maintained during the study period and opportunistic efficacy testing, in line with each farm’s normal flukicide management was undertaken. Additionally, the suitability of the Ollerenshaw Index as a predictive model for fasciolosis under Australian conditions was examined. While both diagnostics demonstrated their value in the farm environment, the current data demonstrate a distinct and significant increase in diagnostic sensitivity for epidemiological studies by using the two tests in parallel. The agreement between the two diagnostics was found to be higher in cattle, despite the poor sensitivity of FFEC in this species. Similar levels of agreement between the two tests were demonstrated at both sheep properties, regardless of the marked difference in the intensity of F. hepatica challenge. Linear regression models demonstrated the results of the two diagnostics utilized in parallel were explained substantially (R2 = 0.91) as were series data (R2 = 0.88) when the respective models were fitted. In contrast, the fitted models for FFEC (R2 = 0.54) and cELISA (R2 = 0.58) were poor explanations for test outcomes. The outcomes of these models support previous findings that suggest that the two diagnostic tests are best utilized together, particularly in parallel. Background Despite their abundance and ecological importance, bats are under significant threat worldwide. There is little information about their distribution, roosting, and habitat requirement for most species, making assessing which species is threatened or in need of special conservation measures difficult. The knowledge gap may partly be due to limitations of the old methods of studying bats which mainly involved capture/or observational techniques. Material and methods In order to evaluate the potential of identifying insectivorous bats by their echolocation calls in the Sahelian zone of northern Cameroon, 65 bats belonging to five species were captured using standard mist netting: Mops condylurus, Chaerephon major, Mops niveiventer, Scotophilus dinganii, and Scotophilus leucogaster. The bats were identified by using morphometric measurements. An Anabat SD1 detector was later used to record echolocation calls of each individual bat in flight after it was hand-released. The sonogram of each individual bat was analyzed using Analook and categorized into two call types (frequency modulation and frequency modulation/quasi constant frequency) in order to develop a library of bat reference calls that could be used for a qualitative acoustic survey and species identification. Discriminant function analysis (DFA) was applied to search phase calls of the 65 individual bats in order to evaluate the potential for classifying calls into five species groups. Seven parameters calculated from each search phase call were used to classify calls. Results Bats where place into two groups according to the structure of calls: FM bats (Mops condylurus, Chaerephon major, Mops niveiventer) and FM/QCF bats (Scotophilus dinganii and Scotophilus leucogaster). The DFA resulted in a correct overall classification of 69.7%. Conclusion This preliminary study showed that DFA of call parameters is a feasible method that can be used to identify insectivorous bats in the region by their echolocation calls.

Background: Vitellaria paradoxa is a traditional medicinal plant of Cameroon. Several studies on this plant have focused on the cosmetic profile of its fruits. The present study focuses on the anti-inflammatory potency of stem barks extract of this plant. Objective: The objective was to evaluate the effect of methanolic extract of V. paradoxa (VPME) stem barks on inflammatory response in rats. Materials and Methods: Anti-inflammatory effects of VPME were evaluated in acute and chronic (28 days) inflammation induced in Wistar albino rats. The effects on hyperalgesia and locomotors activity were also quantified. The relative weight of lymphoid organs was obtained as well as some hematological parameters. Results: In the carrageenan-induced inflammation, VPME (75 mg/kg) exhibited a significant (66.67%) inhibition after 1 h. On the complete Freund's adjuvant-induced rheumatoid arthritis, VPME showed a significant protective effect with 8.12% inflammation against 25.00% for the control group after 2 days of the treatment. The extract (75 and 150 mg/kg) significantly reduced the score of arthritis with a maximum obtained on day 19 th of the experimentation. There was a significant increase in the reaction time of rats on the hot plate as well as the exploratory activities of the animals in the open field. This extract significantly prevented weight, hemoglobin and red blood cells losses, and spleen hypertrophy. A protective action against skin destruction and cartilage erosion was evident. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of the extract revealed the presence of catechins. Conclusions: These findings suggested that V. paradoxa may contribute to the reduction of the inflammatory response.

Terpnosia oberthuri Distant, 1912 becomes Neoterpnosia oberthuri (Distant, 1912) n. comb. Terpnosia versicolor Distant, 1912 is transferred from Terpnosia Distant, 1892 to Neoterpnosia n. gen. to become Neoterpnosia versicolor (Distant, 1912) n. comb. Two new species, Neoterpnosia personalis n. gen., n. sp. and Neoterpnosia donghai n. gen., n. sp., are described from Vietnam and India, respectively.

Background Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) in dogs is considered endemic in Australia, but the clinical heartworm disease caused by the heartworm is rare and prevalence is low. The mainstream prevention of the heartworm is based on macrocyclic lactone (ML) administration. The aim of this study was to confirm endemism of the heartworm under current Australian conditions using a cohort of recent microfilaria-positive dogs which were on variable heartworm prevention. Methods A hotspot of canine heartworm antigen-positive and microfilaria-positive dogs has been detected recently in Queensland, Australia. Blood samples from 39 dogs from Queensland and two dogs from New South Wales were investigated for canine filarioids. Rapid antigen diagnostic tests capable of detection of D. immitis and real-time PCR for quantification and differentiation between D. immitis from Acanthocheilonema reconditum with quantification of microfilariae in canine blood samples, together with D. immitis specific real-time PCR assay, were applied to microfilaria-positive dogs. The P-glycoprotein genotype was determined to test whether Australian-sourced heartworm shared the same genetic markers as those suspected of ML-resistance in North America. Results Only D. immitis was detected in the samples from Queensland and New South Wales, Australia. Using high resolution melt real-time PCR and D. immitis specific real-time PCR, the calculated microfilaria concentration ranged from 1 to 44,957 microfilariae/ml and from 7 to 60,526 microfilariae/ml, respectively. Haemonchus contortus (Barber’s pole worm or “BPW”) is the nematode “nemesis” of small ruminant production systems in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Its reputation derives from a combination of high fecundity and a short generational interval that provides an enviable developmental plasticity for adaptation or resistance to control measures. This review critically examines the historical and current literature on the host–parasite–environment interaction for H. contortus, particularly in sheep, to highlight changes in parasite distribution and ecology on pasture, changes to the seasonal inhibition of fourth stage larvae and the most appropriate models to identify protective responses and assess vaccines. The review also proposes pathways to bring host genetics to fruition and avenues where advances in the parasite genome may complement control measures.

The present study examined the anxiolytic and antidepressant effects of the aqueous extract ofAlafia multiflora Stapf(AM) stem barks (150 and 300 mg/kg, 7 days administration) on rats and mice, using experimental paradigms of anxiety and depression. In the open field, the aqueous extract increased significantly the number of center square crossed and the time spent at the center of the field as well as the rearing time, while the grooming time was reduced significantly. In the elevated plus maze, the aqueous extract increased the time spent and the number of entries in the open arms. All these effects were also completely reversed by flumazenil, an antagonist of benzodiazepine receptors and pindolol aβ-adrenoceptors blocker/5-HT 1A/1B receptor antagonist. The time spent in the light compartment, the latency time, and the number of the light-dark transitions increased significantly in the light/dark exploration test after the treatment with AM. The extract was able to reduce significantly the immobility time and increase swimming as well as climbing duration. Taken together, the present work evidenced anxiolytic effects of the aqueous extract of AM that might involve an action on benzodiazepine-type receptors and an antidepressant effect where noradrenergic mechanisms will probably play a role.

The capacity of a commercially available gamma interferon (IFNγ) assay to detect infected sheep early in the pathogenesis of Johne's disease enables the removal of such animals from the flock before bacterial shedding and pasture contamination. However, nonspecific IFNγ responses in the assay have meant that to achieve high-test specificity, there has been a reduction in sensitivity. Although the optimal conditions for the use of the assay in cattle have been well documented, there have been few studies optimizing the assay for use in sheep. The current study details the effect of anticoagulant, duration of incubation, cell concentration, blood storage temperature, time of stimulation of cells with antigen relative to time of sample collection, and temperatures during transit on IFNγ synthesis. Maximal IFNγ synthesis occurred with incubation periods of 48 hr in blood collected into heparinized tubes. Decreasing the leukocyte population by diluting the total peripheral blood leukocyte concentration was associated with a decreasing IFNγ response. Conversely, concentrating the peripheral blood concentration 2-fold resulted in an increase in the IFNγ production. In field studies, immediate incubation of blood samples with antigen at 37°C resulted in larger IFNγ responses; however, significantly lower IFNγ values were obtained if the samples were transported at ambient temperature. The results of this study indicate that optimization of the IFNγ assay may enable increased synthesis of IFNγ during the stimulation phase of the assay and that future work may determine whether this translates to increased sensitivity of the assay in detecting early infections in sheep.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the in vivo wound healing effect of water extract of Stereospernum kunthianum -bark. The plant is mainly used by the local people of Mayo-Danay, Cameron as wound healing agent. The healing activity was evaluatedin rats using excision and incision wound on normal dexamethasone-delayed wound healing. Control animals received normal saline topically while other groups received dexamethasone (i.m), water extract orally or dexamethasone with the plant extract. The extract treated wounds were found to epithelize faster than those of controls dexamethasone-treated rats. Significant increase in skin tensile strength was observed in earlier than in later groups. Histological examination of incision wounds of extract-treated group showed dense collagen cross-linking and numerous blood vessels. The present study concludes that the stem bark of Stereospernum kunthianum possesses excellent wound healing potential that may substantiate its use in the traditional medicine.

Background The intracellular protozoal parasite Theileria orientalis has rapidly spread across South-eastern Australia, substantially impacting local cattle industries since 2006. Haemaphysalis longicornis appears to be a biological vector in the endemic regions. Mechanical transfer of blood by biting arthropods, in colostrum or iatrogenic transmission though husbandry procedures is another possible mode of transmission. This study assesses the risk of these mechanical modes of transmission. Methods Blood was collected from a T. orientalis Ikeda positive Angus steer, and was inoculated into the jugular vein of 9 calves in 3 treatment groups, each with 3 animals. Calves in Group 1 received 10 ml of cryopreserved blood, while those in Groups 2 and 3 received 1 ml (fresh blood) and 0.1 ml (cryopreserved), respectively. An additional three animals remained as negative controls and the donor calf was also followed as a positive control. Blood was collected over 3 months, and analysed via qPCR for the presence of the parasite. Samples of the sucking louse Linognathus vituli were collected opportunistically from calves 5 months after inoculation and tested for T. orientalis. For the colostral transmission study, 30 samples of blood and colostrum were collected from cows at calving in an endemic herd. These samples along with blood from their calves were tested by qPCR for T. orientalis and for antibodies to the major piroplasm surface protein (MPSP). Results Eight of the nine inoculated calves became positive for T. orientalis. The prepatent period of these infections was inversely correlated with inoculation dose. All negative control calves remained negative and the positive control calf remained positive. Samples of L. vituli tested positive for T. orientalis Ikeda, while some samples of colostrum were also shown to be qPCR and anti-MPSP positive. All calves in the colostral study tested qPCR negative although one was antibody-positive. Conclusions T. orientalis is capable of being mechanically transferred by intravenous inoculation with small volumes of blood and is detectable up to 5 months post-infection. Animals infected by this means may play a significant role in the transmission of the disease by acting as asymptomatic carriers. Other modes of blood transfer, including biting arthropods and colostral transfer are also possible modes of disease transmission.

The Reserve Bank of Australia's third Survey of Consumers' Use of Payment Methods was conducted in November 2013. The survey used a diary and end-of-survey questionnaire to collect data on the use of cash, cards and a range of other payment methods, both at the point of sale and via remote channels (online, mail and telephone). The 2013 data show that cash and cheque use has continued to fall. The use of cards has risen significantly, and there has also been an increase in the use of PayPal. The growth in the use of cards and the reduction in cash use are evident across households in all age and household income groups. The strong growth in remote payments is one contributor to the observed change in the use of cash and cards. However, the main contribution is from the increased use of cards at the point of sale, which is likely to reflect both growth in the availability of card terminals at merchants and changing consumer preferences as authentication methods have evolved. In particular, we find some indication that the adoption of contactless technology, which lowers the tender time of card payments at the point of sale, may have increased card use. The paper presents detailed information about the use of contactless card and smartphone payments by demographic group and payment type. It also provides an update on the payment of surcharges on card payments, including information about the value of card surcharges that were paid by consumers, and the payment of ATM fees.

A new cicada genus and species, Zaphsa princeps n. gen., n. sp., is described from India. Four subtribes, Dundubiina Atkinson, 1886, Megapomponiina Lee n. subtr., Orientopsaltriina Lee n. subtr., and Aolina Boulard, 2012, are placed in Dudubiini Atkinson, 1886 of the subfamily Cicadinae Latreille, 1802. The new genus Zaphsa n. gen. is placed in Aolina. Mata Distant, 1906 is transferred to Oncotympanina Ishihara, 1961.

We evaluated the anxiolytic and antidepressant effects of the aqueous extract of the bark ofTapinanthus dodoneifolius(TAE) (Danser) (25, 50, and 100 mg/kg), using open field, elevated plus maze, and forced swimming tests. Effect of TAE was compared to standard drugs diazepam (2 mg/kg) and imipramine (10 mg/kg). Additionally, the same doses of TAE were evaluated on rat's memory using Y-maze task. Results showed a significant (P<0.05; 100 mg/kg) increase in the percentage of open arm entry and the time spent in the open arms in the elevated plus maze, suggesting an anxiolytic activity of the extract. In a dose-dependant manner, TAE at 25 mg/kg significantly (P<0.05) decreased the number of lines crossed and the rearing behavior in the open field test, suggesting its possible sedative activity. In the forced swimming test, the immobility time of the animal was significantly reduced (P<0.05) by TAE (100 mg/kg), compared to control, and this effect was quite comparable to that of imipramine. In the Y-maze paradigm, TAE at 50 mg/kg caused a significant increase in the spontaneous alternations but with a significant decrease in exploratory behavioral pattern. Taking these results together, TAE improved the spatial memory and showed anxiolytic, antidepressant, and sedative activities. The present results support the anxiolytic and antidepressant activities of TAE and, to our knowledge, for the first time, demonstrate its enhancing effect on memory.

In December 2014, a group of Australian financial institutions announced that funding had been secured for the next phase of the New Payments Platform (NPP), which will provide the capability for Australian consumers and businesses to make and receive payments in near to real time. The NPP is one example of a fast retail payment system, a number of which have been implemented in other countries in recent years. This article provides an overview of some of the features of fast payment systems and discusses the approach taken in the design of the NPP.

Three new cicada genera and species, Mosaica irregularis n. gen., n. sp., Masamia huweii n. gen., n. sp., and Manna tenuis n. gen., n. sp., are described from India and Tibet. Six subtribes, Puranina Lee, n. subtr., Leptopsaltriina Moulton, 1923, Mosaicina Lee, n. subtr. which include the three new genera, Gudabina Lee, n. subtr., Euterpnosiina Lee, n. subtr., and Leptosemiina Lee, n. subtr., are placed in Leptopsaltriini Moulton, 1923 of the subfamily Cicadinae Latreille, 1802.

Combretum is the largest and most widespread genus of Combretaceae. The genus comprises approximately 250 species distributed throughout the tropical regions mainly in Africa and Asia. With increasing chemical and pharmacological investigations, Combretum has shown its potential as a source of various secondary metabolites. Combretum extracts or isolates have shown in vitro bioactivitities such as antibacterial, antifungal, antihyperglycemic, cytotoxicity against various human tumor cell lines, anti-inflammatory, anti-snake, antimalarial and antioxidant effects. In vivo studies through various animal models have also shown promising results. However, chemical constituents and bioactivities of most species of this highly diversified genus have not been investigated. The molecular mechanism of bioactivities of Combretum isolates remains elusive. This review focuses on the chemistry of 261 compounds isolated and identified from 31 species of Combretum. The phytochemicals of interest are non-essential oil compounds belonging to the various structural groups such as terpenoids, flavonoids, phenanthrenes and stilbenoids.
