To better understand the origins of the timing resolution, also known as jitter, of superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs), we have performed timing characterizations of a niobium nitride SNSPD with a dual-ended readout. By simultaneously measuring both readout pulses along with an optical timing reference signal, we are able to quantify each independent contribution to the total measured jitter. In particular, we are able to determine values for the jitter due to the stochastic nature of hotspot formation and the jitter due to the variation of the photon detection location along the length of the nanowire. We compare the results of this analysis for measurements at temperatures of 1.5 K and 4.5 K.

We demonstrate impedance-matched low-loss transmission lines with a signal wavelength more than 150 times smaller than the free space wavelength using superconducting nanowires on high permittivity substrates. A niobium nitride thin film is patterned in a coplanar waveguide (CPW) transmission line geometry on a bilayer substrate consisting of 100 nm of epitaxial strontium titanate on high-resitivity silicon. The use of strontium titanate on silicon enables wafer-scale fabrication and maximizes process compatibility. It also makes it possible to realize a $50$ $\Omega$ characteristic impedance across a wide range of CPW widths, from the nanoscale to the macroscale. We fabricated and characterized an approximately $50$ $\Omega$ CPW device with two half-wave stub resonators. Comparing the measured transmission coefficient to numerical simulations, we determine that the strontium titanate film has a dielectric constant of $1.1 \times 10^3$ and a loss tangent of not more than 0.009. To facilitate the design of distributed microwave devices based on this type of material system, we describe an analytical model of the CPW properties that gives good agreement with both measurements and simulations.

Developing compact, low-dissipation, cryogenic-compatible microwave electronics is essential for scaling up low-temperature quantum computing systems. In this paper, we demonstrate an ultracompact microwave directional forward coupler based on high-impedance slow-wave superconducting-nanowire transmission lines. The coupling section of the fabricated device has a footprint of $416\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}{\mathrm{m}}^{2}$. At 4.753 GHz, the input signal couples equally to the through port and forward-coupling port (50:50) at $\ensuremath{-}6.7\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}\mathrm{dB}$ with $\ensuremath{-}13.5\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}\mathrm{dB}$ isolation. The coupling ratio can be controlled with dc bias current or temperature by exploiting the dependence of the kinetic inductance on these quantities. The material and fabrication processes are suitable for direct integration with superconducting circuits, providing a practical solution to the signal distribution bottlenecks in developing large-scale quantum computers.

The development of methods to produce nanoscale features with tailored chemical functionalities is fundamental for applications such as nanoelectronics and sensor fabrication. The molecular-ruler process shows great utility for this purpose as it combines top-down lithography for the creation of complex architectures over large areas in conjunction with molecular self-assembly, which enables precise control over the physical and chemical properties of small local features. The molecular-ruler process, which most commonly uses mercaptoalkanoic acids and metal ions to generate metal-ligated multilayers, can be employed to produce registered nanogaps between metal features. Expansion of this methodology to include molecules with other chemical functionalities could greatly expand the overall versatility, and thus the utility, of this process. Herein, we explore the use of alkanethiol molecules as the terminating layer of metal-ligated multilayers. During this study, it was discovered that the solution deposition of alkanethiol molecules resulted in low overall surface coverage with features that varied in height. Because features with varied heights are not conducive to the production of uniform nanogaps via the molecular-ruler process, the vapor-phase deposition of alkanethiol molecules was explored. Unlike the solution-phase deposition, alkanethiol islands produced by vapor-phase deposition exhibited markedly higher surface coverages of uniform heights. To illustrate the applicability of this method, metal-ligated multilayers, both with and without an alkanethiol capping layer, were utilized to create nanogaps between Au features using the molecular-ruler process.

A superconducting nanowire acting as a single-photon detector and as a microwave delay line is used to demonstrate an imaging device at the single-photon level with sub-20-µm spatial resolution and 50-ps temporal resolution.

Conventional readout of a superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD) sets an upper bound on the output voltage to be the product of the bias current and the load impedance, I B × Z load , where Z load is limited to 50 Ω in standard r.f. electronics. Here, we break this limit by interfacing the 50 Ω load and the SNSPD using an integrated superconducting transmission line taper. The taper is a transformer that effectively loads the SNSPD with high impedance without latching. At the expense of reduced maximum counting rate, it increases the amplitude of the detector output while preserving the fast rising edge. Using a taper with a starting width of 500 nm, we experimentally observed a 3.6× higher pulse amplitude, 3.7× faster slew rate, and 25.1 ps smaller timing jitter. The results match our numerical simulation, which incorporates both the hotspot dynamics in the SNSPD and the distributed nature in the transmission line taper. We characterize the evolution of the electrical properties of ultra-thin niobium films stored in ambient conditions over a period of approximately seven months. Patterned films with thicknesses between 8 and 16 nm were fabricated via electron-beam deposition on unheated silicon substrates using a lift-off process. The film quality is similar to previous results obtained with sputter deposition onto unheated silicon substrates. The increase of the resistance and the decrease of the superconducting critical temperature are well described by an exponential function with a time constant of approximately 37 days.

To analyze the switching dynamics and output performance of a superconducting nanowire single photon detector (SNSPD), the nanowire is usually modelled as an inductor in series with a time-varying resistor induced by the absorption of a photon. Our recent experimental results show that, due to the effect of kinetic inductance, for a SNSPD made of a nanowire of sufficient length, its geometrical length can be comparable to or even longer than the effective wavelength of frequencies contained in the output pulse. In other words, a superconducting nanowire can behave as a distributed transmission line so that the readout pulse depends on the photon detection location and the transmission line properties of the nanowire. Here, we develop a distributed model for a superconducting nanowire and apply it to simulate the output performance of a long nanowire designed into a coplanar waveguide. We compare this coplanar waveguide geometry to a conventional meander nanowire geometry. The simulation results agree well with our experimental observations. With this distributed model, we discuss the importance of microwave design of a nanowire and how impedance matching can affect the output pulse shape. We also discuss how the distributed model affects the growth and decay of the photon-triggered resistive hotspot.

We investigate the performance of superconducting nanowire photon detectors fabricated from ultra-thin Nb. A direct comparison is made between these detectors and similar nanowire detectors fabricated from NbN. We find that Nb detectors are significantly more susceptible than NbN to thermal instability (latching) at high bias. We show that the devices can be stabilized by reducing the input resistance of the readout. Nb detectors optimized in this way are shown to have approximately 2/3 the reset time of similar large-active-area NbN detectors of the same geometry, with approximately 6% detection efficiency for single photons at 470 nm.

We report characterizations of antenna-coupled hot electron bolometers designed for laboratory-based terahertz spectroscopy. These direct detectors combine sub-nanosecond response, high sensitivity, and the ability to operate below saturation when viewing a room temperature background. The optimum small-signal responsivity is 4.4 times 104 V/W, measured at a bath temperature Tb ap 0.9Tc. The corresponding saturation power is 7 nW. The saturation power increases and the small-signal responsivity decreases as the bath temperature is lowered. The measured noise equivalent power is 2.0 times 10-14 W/(Hz)frac12, near the predicted thermal fluctuation limit. The noise is white from approximately 100 Hz to 100 MHz.

We study the microwave impedance of extremely high aspect ratio (length/width ≈ 5000) superconducting niobium nitride nanowires. The nanowires are fabricated in a compact meander geometry that is in series with the center conductor of a 50 Ω coplanar waveguide transmission line. The transmission coefficient of the sample is measured up to 20 GHz. At high frequency, a peak in the transmission coefficient is seen. Numerical simulations show that this is a half-wave resonance along the length of the nanowire, where the nanowire acts as a high impedance, slow wave transmission line. This resonance sets the upper frequency limit for these nanowires as inductive elements. Fitting simulations to the measured resonance enables a precise determination of the nanowire's complex sheet impedance at the resonance frequency. The real part is a measure of dissipation, while the imaginary part is dominated by kinetic inductance. We characterize the dependence of the sheet resistance and sheet inductance on both temperature and current and compare the results to recent theoretical predictions for disordered superconductors. These results can aid in the understanding of high frequency devices based on superconducting nanowires. We report on the detection of single photons with {\lambda} = 8 {\mu}m using a superconducting hot-electron microbolometer. The sensing element is a titanium transition-edge sensor with a volume ~ 0.1 {\mu}m^3 fabricated on a silicon substrate. Poisson photon counting statistics including simultaneous detection of 3 photons was observed. The width of the photon-number peaks was 0.11 eV, 70% of the photon energy, at 50-100 mK. This achieved energy resolution is one of the best figures reported so far for superconducting devices. We characterize the terahertz detection mechanism in antenna-coupled metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes. At low temperature, 4.2 K, a peak in the low-frequency differential resistance is observed at zero bias current due to non-Ohmic contacts. This electrical contact nonlinearity gives rise to the measured terahertz response. By modeling each nanotube contact as a nonlinear resistor in parallel with a capacitor, we determine an upper bound for the value of the contact capacitance that is smaller than previous experimental estimates. The small magnitude of this contact capacitance has favorable implications for the use of carbon nanotubes in high-frequency device applications., 13 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

We describe a superconducting transition edge sensor based on a nanoscale niobium detector element. This device is predicted to be capable of energy-resolved near-IR single-photon detection with a GHz count rate. The increased speed and sensitivity of this device compared to traditional transition edge sensors result from the very small electronic heat capacity of the nanoscale detector element. In the present work, we calculate the predicted thermal response time and energy resolution. We also discuss approaches for achieving efficient optical coupling to the sub-wavelength detector element using a resonant near-IR antenna.

We characterize the energy loss of the non-equilibrium electron system in individual metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes at low temperature. Using Johnson noise thermometry, we demonstrate that, for a nanotube with ohmic contacts, the dc resistance at finite bias current directly reflects the average electron temperature. This enables a straightforward determination of the thermal conductance associated with cooling of the nanotube electron system. We characterize inductors fabricated from ultra-thin, approximately 100 nm wide strips of niobium (Nb) and niobium nitride (NbN). These nanowires have a large kinetic inductance in the superconducting state. The kinetic inductance scales linearly with the nanowire length, with a typical value of 1 nH/um for NbN and 44 pH/um for Nb at a temperature of 2.5 K. We measure the temperature and current dependence of the kinetic inductance and compare our results to theoretical predictions. We also simulate the self-resonant frequencies of these nanowires in a compact meander geometry. We present an overview of the recent progress made in the development of a far-IR array of ultrasensitive hot-electron nanobolometers (nano-HEB) made from thin titanium (Ti) films. We studied electrical noise, signal and noise bandwidth, single-photon detection, optical noise equivalent power (NEP), and a microwave SQUID (MSQUID) based frequency domain multiplexing (FDM) scheme. The obtained results demonstrate the very low electrical NEP down to 1.5 × 10^(-20) W/Hz^(1/2) at 50 mK determined by the dominating phonon noise. The NEP increases with temperature as ~ T^3 reaching ~10^(-17) W/Hz^(1/2) at the device critical temperature T_C = 330-360 mK. Optical NEP = 8.6 × 10^(-18) W/Hz^(1/2) at 357 mK and 1.4 × 10^(-18) W/Hz^(1/2) at 100 mK respectively, agree with thermal and electrical data. The optical coupling efficiency provided by a planar antenna was greater than 50%. Single 8-μm photons have been detected for the first time using a nano-HEB operating at 50-200 mK thus demonstrating a potential of these detectors for future photon-counting applications in mid-IR and far-IR. In order to accommodate the relatively high detector speed (~μs at 300 mK, ~100 μs at 100 mK), an MSQUID based FDM multiplexed readout with GHz carrier frequencies has been built. Both the readout noise ~2 pA/Hz^(1/2) and the bandwidth > 150 kHz are suitable for nano-HEB detectors.

We study the reset dynamics of niobium (Nb) superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) using experimental measurements and numerical simulations. The numerical simulations of the detection dynamics agree well with experimental measurements, using independently determined parameters in the simulations. We find that if the photon-induced hotspot cools too slowly, the device will latch into a dc resistive state. To avoid latching, the time for the hotspot to cool must be short compared to the inductive time constant that governs the resetting of the current in the device after hotspot formation. From simulations of the energy relaxation process, we find that the hotspot cooling time is determined primarily by the temperature-dependent electron-phonon inelastic time. Latching prevents reset and precludes subsequent photon detection. Fast resetting to the superconducting state is, therefore, essential, and we demonstrate experimentally how this is achieved. We compare our results to studies of reset and latching in niobium nitride SNSPDs.

We have constructed several impedance-matched low-pass filters using a stripline geometry with a dissipative dielectric. The filters are compact, simple to construct, and operate in cryogenic environments. The dissipative dielectric consists of magnetically-loaded silicone or epoxy, which are commercially available under the trade name Eccosorb. For a stripline length of 32 mm, the filters have a passband that extends from dc to a 3 dB bandwidth between 0.3 and 0.8 GHz. The 3 dB bandwidth can be adjusted beyond this range by changing the filter length. An extremely broad stopband at higher frequencies, with attenuation exceeding 100 dB, is achieved along with a return loss greater than 10 dB measured up to 40 GHz. This combination of high attenuation and low reflected power across a broad stopband ensures that spurious or unwanted signals outside the passband do not reach or return to the device under test. This type of filter has applications in microwave frequency measurements of sensitive non-linear devices such as superconducting heterodyne mixers, quantum tunneling devices, and quantum computing elements., 9 pages, 4 figures

We are developing Nb diffusion-cooled Hot Electron Bolometers (HEBs) for a large-format array submillimeter camera. We have fabricated Nb HEBs using a new angle deposition process. We have characterized these devices using heterodyne mixing at 20 GHz. The extremely small size of plasmonic antennas has made it difficult to integrate them with nanoscale detectors that require electrical leads, as the leads tend to degrade the resonant properties of the antenna. We present a design for integrating a plasmonic antenna with a nanoscale superconducting transition-edge sensor (TES) with electrical leads. Numerical simulations demonstrate high-efficiency coupling of 1550 nm incident photons into the sub-wavelength TES. Although we have chosen to design around a TES, this approach is broadly applicable to any dissipative nanoscale device that requires an electrical connection.

We report measurements of the energy resolution of ultra-sensitive superconducting bolometric detectors. The device is a superconducting titanium nanobridge with niobium contacts. A fast microwave pulse is used to simulate a single higher-frequency photon, where the absorbed energy of the pulse is equal to the photon energy. This technique allows precise calibration of the input coupling and avoids problems with unwanted background photons.
