Abstract

Recognizing the imperative to evaluate species recovery and conservation impact, in 2012 the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) called for development of a "Green List of Species" (now the IUCN Green Status of Species). A draft Green Status framework for assessing species' progress toward recovery, published in 2018, proposed 2 separate but interlinked components: a standardized method (i.e., measurement against benchmarks of species' viability, functionality, and preimpact distribution) to determine current species recovery status (herein species recovery score) and application of that method to estimate past and potential future impacts of conservation based on 4 metrics (conservation legacy, conservation dependence, conservation gain, and recovery potential). We tested the framework with 181 species representing diverse taxa, life histories, biomes, and IUCN Red List categories (extinction risk). Based on the observed distribution of species' recovery scores, we propose the following species recovery categories: fully recovered, slightly depleted, moderately depleted, largely depleted, critically depleted, extinct in the wild, and indeterminate. Fifty-nine percent of tested species were considered largely or critically depleted. Although there was a negative relationship between extinction risk and species recovery score, variation was considerable. Some species in lower risk categories were assessed as farther from recovery than those at higher risk. This emphasizes that species recovery is conceptually different from extinction risk and reinforces the utility of the IUCN Green Status of Species to more fully understand species conservation status. Although extinction risk did not predict conservation legacy, conservation dependence, or conservation gain, it was positively correlated with recovery potential. Only 1.7% of tested species were categorized as zero across all 4 of these conservation impact metrics, indicating that conservation has, or will, play a role in improving or maintaining species status for the vast majority of these species. Based on our results, we devised an updated assessment framework that introduces the option of using a dynamic baseline to assess future impacts of conservation over the short term to avoid misleading results which were generated in a small number of cases, and redefines short term as 10 years to better align with conservation planning. These changes are reflected in the IUCN Green Status of Species Standard.

Abstract

Purpose: The incidence of oral cavity and pharynx cancer is rising in the United States and South Dakota (SD) (2009-2018). In 2018, it was estimated that 396,937 of Americans were living with oral cavity and pharynx cancer. The 5-year relative survival rate for oral cancer is 66.2%, which is less than the survival rates for breast, colorectum, and prostate cancers. Tobacco and alcohol use and human papillomavirus (HPV16) exposure are some of the risk factors for oral cancer. Overall rural populations have higher cancer mortality than no rural population due to higher poverty, lower access to health services, and cigarette use. The purpose of this study is to investigate the prevalence of the oral cancer risk factors (e.g., cigarette smoking), HPV vaccination rates, and to identify the spatial distribution of social and environmental factors (e.g., social vulnerability, dental care access) in SD. Finally, this article discusses how nurses can contribute to oral cancer prevention and early detection. Methods: This descriptive study used data from multiple data sources (e.g., SD Department of Health, HRSA, County Health Rankings). Maps were created using ArcGIS. Findings: From the 66 SD counties, nearly 17% presented high-level shortage scores and were also highly socially vulnerable. HPV vaccination among youth was higher than the national average. Studies showed that improving nurse's knowledge by training on oral cancer is needed and this may increase nurses' practice in oral cancer prevention and control. Conclusions: Primary care professionals like nurse practitioners can assist in early detection of oral cancer and promote awareness of signs and main risk factors in rural areas. As part of the total patient care, nurses hold a vital role in prevention and early detection of oral cancer. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2015-01-01 In this study, the push-out method was used to evaluate the bond strengths of 3 types of endodontic cements according to their composite base: methacrylate, epoxy resin, and an experimental copaiba oil resin. The study hypothesis was that the methacrylate-based and experimental cements would have bond strengths equal to or greater than that of the epoxy resin-based cement. Thirty bovine tooth roots, 18 mm long, were divided into 3 groups (n = 10) based on the chosen cement treatment. After treatment, the specimens were sectioned and submitted to a push-out test. Results showed that there was no statistically significant difference (P < 0.05) between the cements used or between the middle and apical thirds of the roots. It could be concluded that the tested cements had satisfactory and similar bond strengths to dentin. 19. Associations entre les indices de défavorisation des écoles et l'état de santé buccodentaire des élèves au Québec

Abstract

Les écoles représentent un cadre idéal pour les programmes de promotion de la santé et les opportunités de réduction des inégalités en santé buccodentaire. Objectif: Examiner l'association entre les indices de défavorisation des écoles et le statut de santé buccodentaire des élèves. Méthodes: Nous avons mené une étude écologique utilisant un échantillon de 316 écoles primaires publiques dans la province de Québec, au Canada. Des données provenant de deux sources ont été appariées en utilisant des identificateurs scolaires: (i) Deux indices de défavorisation scolaire (en déciles) provenant du Ministère de l'Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport : un indice de faible revenu et un indice de milieu socio-économique; (ii) La prévalence des problèmes de santé buccodentaire provenant de 1 'Étude 1998-1999 sur la santé buccodentaire des élèves québécois de 5-6 ans et de 7-8 ans, agrégés au niveau de l'école. Ces problèmes incluaient la proportion d'enfants atteints par la carie et la proportion d'enfants rapportant une douleur buccodentaire. La relation entre les indices de défavorisation scolaire et les problèmes de santé buccodentaire a été évaluée au moyen de la régression linéaire pour ce qui est de l'expérience de la carie dentaire et au moyen de la régression logistique pour la douleur buccodentaire. Résultats: L'indice CAO-F (le nombre moyen de faces -cariées, obturées ou extraites) moyen par école était de 0,73 (écart-type= 0,55); les proportions moyennes d'enfants atteints par la carie et rapportant une douleur buccodentaire étaient respectivement de 25% et de 3%. L'indice de faible revenu n'était pas associé aux problèmes de santé buccodentaire. En ce qui concerne l'indice de milieu socio-économique, chaque augmentation d'une unité (des déciles plus élevés indiquant un milieu plus défavorable) était associée à une augmentation de 1,3% (intervalle de confiance à 95%: 0,6-1 ,9%) dans la proportion d'enfants atteints par la carie. Abstract

The culture of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) has been consolidated in different regions of Brazil, and presents interesting characteristics on agronomic aspects, oil composition and protein quality. The defatted sunflower meal has been used to feed, but browning limits its use for human consumption. Sunflower meal contains chlorogenic acid, a potent antioxidant, which in turn is oxidized by polyphenol oxidase, producing compounds that darken the meal and reduce the nutritional quality of protein. In this research chlorogenic acid extracts were obtained from defatted sunflower meal, using methanol or ethanol as solvent, at temperatures of 25, 40 and 60°C and contact times of 30 and 60 minutes in a three classification criteria experiments. There were significant differences between solvent, time and temperature (P<0.05). The highest removal efficiency of chlorogenic acid was of 40%, when methanol was used. Chlorogenic acid extracts obtained have potential for use as antioxidant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
