4. A Pillar for Successful Business School Accreditation: Conducting the Curriculum Review Process--A Systematic Approach

Abstract

The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) describes their accreditation as the "hallmark of business education." According to information at BestBizSchools.com (n.d.), "AACSB accreditation represents the highest standard of achievement for business schools worldwide. Being AACSB accredited means a business school is able to continuously pass a strict set of standards that ensure quality." As of December 2010, only 5%, or 607, of the academic business programs globally were accredited by AACSB. This number represents schools in 38 countries where the majority of programs incorporate both undergraduate and graduate education covering business, accounting, or both. An institution must be a member of AACSB in order to apply for accreditation. It is important to note, however, that membership does not imply that the program is accredited (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, n.d.-a). Recent emphasis demanding external validation on the quality of "Business Schools" has resulted in the promotion of AACSB accreditation as the de facto quality standard. Earning this quality seal of approval, business programs can verify they have met the 21 AACSB standards that cover strategic, participant, and assurance of learning achievements and processes. Programs with AACSB accreditation are encouraged to promote the standard using it to externally validate their quality and to market their programs to external groups including students, employers, and contributors (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, n.d.-b). Despite established standards, no single approach to meeting standards for accreditation is suggested by AACSB. Rather, varying approaches to meeting standards should be developed to fit individual programs of institutions (Bryant & Scherer, 2009). This position by AACSB underscores its recognition of the diversity across accredited programs and allows educators wide latitude in developing and implementing approaches to excellence. Small programs are not disadvantaged so long as their students, faculty, graduates, and the employers who hire them receive the quality outputs that help them meet the external competitive requirements (Olian, 2007). In recognition of member institutions' diversity, the AACSB has established the Affinity Group program where school administrators from schools sharing similar characteristics can interact, exchange ideas, and present views on a wide range of issues (Olian, 2007). This allows AACSB member schools, who have varying missions and constituents, to find and link with other programs of a similar nature where creativity and synergy can more easily occur. The AACSB wants the accreditation process to help facilitate creativity in designing business school strategies rather than being viewed as an impediment to a program's push to quality (Romero, 2008).

5. Database Systems and Oracle: Experiences and Lessons Learned

In a tight job market, IT professionals with database experience are likely to be in great demand. Companies need database personnel who can help improve access to and security of data. The events of September 11 have increased business' awareness of the need for database security, backup, and recovery procedures. It is our responsibility to prepare our students to meet the challenges of database development and system administration. This knowledge of creating, manipulating and analyzing data for decision making purposes is fundamental for those managers making business decisions. Our decision to change to Oracle is a perfect example of the need to make students more aware that a company's database platform may change and they must be capable of meeting the challenges of the change. This paper will focus on the pedagogical changes necessary to teach fundamental database concepts and the current technology needed to implement a system using Oracle. 6. Utilizing a CMS to Facilitate Computer Science Instruction

Course Management Systems are becoming increasingly accepted as an effective and efficient method of course delivery. Often they are used as the principal means of web-based course delivery. In addition, many institutions are utilizing CMSs to more economically handle large sections of particular courses. However, CMSs can also be used as a valuable tool for supplementing face-to-face course instruction. Although we have used a CMS extensively in large sections of lower-level courses, we have not, until now, made a concentrated effort at examining the effect of using a CMS in our upper-level computer science programming courses. This paper will focus on the pedagogical uses of a CMS and the specific aspects of a CMS that seem to either contribute to or detract from student learning. We also explore the features we would like to employ in the future that may increase student motivation and success for our computer science students. [For complete proceedings, see ED490093.]

8. Studies on the human glutathione peroxidase gene and related DNA sequences

Abstract

Glutathione peroxidase (GPX) is a selenoenzyme consisting of four identical subunits. Each subunit is approximately 21KD in size and contains selenium in the form of selenocysteine in the active site. Mammalian glutathione peroxidase activity is highest in erythrocytes with high levels also found in liver and kidney. The enzyme catalyses the reduction of hydrogen peroxide and organic hydroperoxides using glutathione as the reducing agent. The enzyme plays a central role in antioxidative defence and hence has been implicated in a variety of clinical conditions where free radicals and hydroperoxides are thought to be involved, e. g. cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, and cardiovascular disease. It has also been implicated in selenium-deficiency diseases, and diseases where abnormalities in levels of selenium are seen, since severe nutritional selenium deficiency has been shown to cause a deficiency in glutathione peroxidase. The functional GPX gene in humans is located on chromosome 3, and consists of two exons and one intron. Published sequences of human and animal GPX genes reveal that the selenocysteine residue is encoded by the "termination" codon UGA. Recent evidence suggests that selenocysteine is incorporated co-translationally, the UGA codon being suppressed by a selenocyteyl-tRNA and novel translation factors. The aims of this investigation were to isolate and characterise the human GPX gene and related sequences. These sequences would then be used as hybridisation probes in the analysis of mRNA levels in patients with diseases where modulation of glutathione peroxidase levels is thought to be implicated. In this thesis I present results to demonstrate:- i) The isolation and characterisation of the human genomic sequence coding for the GPX gene and identification of this with the sequence of the human GPX gene recently published by other authors. ii) The isolation of a cDNA apparently coding for a novel GPX-related selenopeptide, GPRP, and a comparison of this with the human GPX gene to determine the relationship between the two. iii) The use of subcloned DNA fragments and synthetic oligonucleotides to distinguish between the two sequences in hybridisation experiments with human genomic DNA and mRNA. iv) Analysis of mRNA levels for GPX and GPRP in white blood cells from patients with rheumatoid arthritis and hyperlipidemia. Results are discussed with particular reference to the relationship between the two genes. No significant differences in GPX or GPRP mRNA levels were seen in patients with rheumatoid arthritis or hyperlipidemia compared to controls. Therefore if GPX or GPRP levels are altered in these conditions it is not as a result of changes in gene expression at the transcriptional level. After completion of this thesis, it was demonstrated that the GPRP sequence was identical to the 5' end of the mouse gene. The results concerning the relationship between the human GPX gene and GPRP will therefore have to be viewed in the light of this information. A full discussion of these results has been included in this thesis.

Abstract

Although rambunctious school children throwing paper airplanes are often credited as the premier creators of chaos in classrooms, we recommend that instructors turn the tables. Specifically, we suggest that professors, armed with their own paper airplanes, create chaos in their classrooms as a means of teaching students about Karl Weick's principles of organizational communication. In keeping with Weick's notions that communication and organizing are required to reduce uncertainty, and that members of organizations are interdependent, this exercise presents students with an ambiguous problem that requires communication, organizing, and sense-making to solve.

Many patrons (and even staff) are unaware of the proper handling of materials. According to the Heritage Health Index report, more than 820 million collection items in US cultural institutions are in urgent need of repair. In response, the American Library Association created Preservation Week to build awareness of our responsibilities to care for collections so they will be accessible to this and future generations. Preservation staff from four Oahu academic libraries will showcase how they participate in the national initiative--ranging from the simple to the complex--and give advice on how to create an event.
