The interplay between strong electron-electron interaction and symmetry breaking can have profound influence on the topological properties of materials. In magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG), the flat band with a single SU(4) flavor associated with the spin and valley degrees of freedom gains non-zero Chern number when C2z symmetry or C2zT symmetry is broken. Electron-electron interaction can further lift the SU(4) degeneracy, leading to the Chern insulator states. Here we report a complete sequence of zero-field Chern insulators at all odd integer fillings (v = +-1, +-3) with different chirality (C = 1 or -1) in hBN aligned MATBG which structurally breaks C2z symmetry. The Chern states at hole fillings (v = -1, -3), which are firstly observed in this work, host an opposite chirality compared with the electron filling scenario. By slightly doping the v = +-3 states, we have observed new correlated insulating states at incommensurate moir\'e fillings which is highly suggested to be intrinsic Wigner crystals according to our theoretical calculations. Remarkably, we have observed prominent Streda-formula violation around v = -3 state. By doping the Chern gap at v = -3 with notable number of electrons at finite magnetic field, the Hall resistance Ryx robustly quantizes to ~ h/e2 whereas longitudinal resistance Rxx vanishes, indicating that the chemical potential is pinned within a Chern gap, forming an incommensurate Chern insulator. By providing the first experimental observation of zero-field Chern insulators in the flat valence band, our work fills up the overall topological framework of MATBG with broken C2z symmetry. This report evaluates the applicability of the ideal gas law in the pressurized air-bearing of hard disk drives when calculating the relative humidity. We employ a semi-analytical numerical method that solves vapor-liquid equilibrium using the Redlich-Kwong and Peng-Robinson equation of state to calculate the saturation pressure of water. The deviation from the ideal gas law is quantified and examined through saturation pressure isotherms. We find that at low temperatures, lighter gases such as helium show little deviation from the ideal gas law, whereas heavier gases such as nitrogen deviate significantly. As temperature increases, the difference between the gases decreases. The results suggest that in areas of low temperature, the non-ideal nature of gases must be taken into account.

A photodiode consisting of nanopillars of thin-film silicon p-i-n on an array of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with a noncontinuous cathode electrode is demonstrated. The structure exploits the intrinsic enhancement of the CNTs electric field, which leads to reduction in the photodiodes operating voltage and response time and enhancement of optical coupling due to better light trapping, as compared with the conventional planar photodiode. These improvements translate to higher resolution and higher frame rate flat-panel imaging systems for a broad range of applications, including computed tomography and particle detection.

Surface plasmon polaritons and phonon polaritons offer a means of surpassing the diffraction limit of conventional optics and facilitate efficient energy storage, local field enhancement, high sensitivities, benefitting from their subwavelength confinement of light. Unfortunately, losses severely limit the propagation decay length, thus restricting the practical use of polaritons. While optimizing the fabrication technique can help circumvent the scattering loss of imperfect structures, the intrinsic absorption channel leading to heat production cannot be eliminated. Here, we utilize synthetic optical excitation of complex frequency with virtual gain, synthesized by combining the measurements taken at multiple real frequencies, to restore the lossless propagations of phonon polaritons with significantly reduced intrinsic losses. The concept of synthetic complex frequency excitation represents a viable solution to compensate for loss and would benefit applications including photonic circuits, waveguiding and plasmonic/phononic structured illumination microscopy., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

Detecting trace molecules remains a significant challenge. Surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) based on plasmonic nanostructures, particularly graphene, has emerged as a promising approach to enhance sensing sensitivity. While graphene-based SEIRA offers advantages such as ultrahigh sensitivity and active tunability, intrinsic molecular damping weakens the interaction between vibrational modes and plasmons. Here, we demonstrate ultrahigh-sensitive molecular sensing based on synthesized complex-frequency waves (CFW). Our experiment shows that CFW can amplify the molecular signals (~1.2-nm-thick silk protein layer) detected by graphene-based sensor by at least an order of magnitude and can be universally applied to molecular sensing in different phases. Stacking order plays a crucial role in determining the crystal symmetry and has significant impacts on electronic, optical, magnetic, and topological properties. Electron-phonon coupling, which is central to a wide range of intriguing quantum phenomena, is expected to be intricately connected with stacking order. Understanding the stacking order-dependent electron-phonon coupling is essential for understanding peculiar physical phenomena associated with electron-phonon coupling, such as superconductivity and charge density waves. In this study, we investigate the effect of stacking order on electron-infrared phonon coupling in graphene trilayers. By using gate-tunable Raman spectroscopy and excitation frequency-dependent near-field infrared nanoscopy, we show that rhombohedral ABC-stacked trilayer graphene has a significantly stronger electron-infrared phonon coupling strength than the Bernal ABA-stacked trilayer graphene. Our findings provide novel insights into the superconductivity and other fundamental physical properties of rhombohedral ABC-stacked trilayer graphene, and can enable nondestructive and high-throughput imaging of trilayer graphene stacking order using Raman scattering.

Superlenses made of plasmonic materials and metamaterials have been exploited to image features of sub-diffractional scale. However, their intrinsic losses impose a serious restriction on the imaging resolution, which is a long-standing problem that has hindered wide-spread applications of superlenses. Optical waves of complex frequency exhibiting a temporally attenuating behavior have been proposed to offset the intrinsic losses in superlenses via virtual gain, but the experimental realization has been missing due to the challenge involved in preparing the illumination with temporal decay. Here, by employing multi-frequency measurement, we successfully implement a synthetic optical wave of complex frequency to experimentally observe deep-subwavelength superimaging patterns enabled by the virtual gain. Negative refraction provides an attractive platform to manipulate mid-infrared and terahertz radiation for molecular sensing and thermal radiation applications. However, its implementation based on available metamaterials and plasmonic media presents challenges associated with optical losses, limited spatial confinement, and lack of active tunability in this spectral range. Here, we demonstrate gate-tunable negative refraction at mid-infrared frequencies using hybrid topological polaritons in van der Waals heterostructures with high spatial confinement. We experimentally visualize wide-angle negatively-refracted surface polaritons on {\alpha}-MoO3 films partially decorated with graphene, undergoing planar nanoscale focusing down to 1.6% of the free-space wavelength. Our atomically thick heterostructures outperform conventional bulk materials by avoiding scattering losses at the refracting interface while enabling active tunability through electrical gating. We propose polaritonic negative refraction as a promising platform for infrared applications such as electrically tunable super-resolution imaging, nanoscale thermal manipulation, and molecular sensing.

Controlling the charge carrier density provides an efficient way to trigger phase transitions and modulate the optoelectronic properties in natural materials. This approach could be used to induce topological transitions in the optical response of photonic systems. Here, we predict a topological transition in the isofrequency dispersion contours of hybrid polaritons supported by a two-dimensional heterostructure consisting of graphene and $\alpha$-phase molybdenum trioxide ($\alpha$-MoO3). By chemically changing the doping level of graphene, we experimentally demonstrate that the contour topology of polariton isofrequency surfaces transforms from open to closed shapes as a result of doping-dependent polariton hybridization. Moreover, by changing the substrate medium for the heterostructure, the dispersion contour can be further engineered into a rather flattened shape at the topological transition, thus supporting tunable polariton canalization and providing the means to locally control the topology. We demonstrate this idea to achieve extremely subwavelength focusing by using a 1.2-$\mu$m-wide silica substrate as a negative refraction lens. Our findings open a disruptive approach toward promising on-chip applications in nanoimaging, optical sensing, and manipulation of nanoscale energy transfer.

Enhanced light-matter interaction at the nanoscale is pivotal in the foundation of nonlinear optics, quantum optics, and nanophotonics, which are essential for a vast range of applications including single-photon sources, nanolasers, and nanosensors. In this context, the combination of strongly confined polaritons and low-loss nanocavities provides a promising way to enhance light-matter interaction, thus giving rise to a high density of optical states, as quantified by the so-called Purcell factor - the ratio of the decay rate of an optical quantum emitter to its value in free space. Here, we exploit whispering-gallery hyperbolic-phonon-polariton (WG-HPhP) modes in hBN nanotubes (BNNTs) to demonstrate record-high Purcell factors (~10^12) driven by the deep-subwavelength confinement of phonon polaritons and the low intrinsic losses in these atomically smooth nanocavities. Furthermore, the measured Purcell factor increases with decreasing BNNT radius down to 5 nm, a result that extrapolates to ~10^14 in a single-walled BNNT. Our study supports WG-HPhP modes in one-dimensional nanotubes as a powerful platform for investigating ultrastrong light-matter interactions, which open exciting perspectives for applications in single-molecular sensors and nanolasers., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures

Modern scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) has become an indispensable tool in material research. However, as the s-SNOM technique marches into the far-infrared (IR) and terahertz (THz) regimes, emerging experiments sometimes produce puzzling results. For example, anomalies in the near-field optical contrast have been widely reported. In this Letter, we systematically investigate a series of extreme subwavelength metallic nanostructures via s-SNOM near-field imaging in the GHz to THz frequency range. We find that the near-field material contrast is greatly impacted by the lateral size of the nanostructure, while the spatial resolution is practically independent of it. The contrast is also strongly affected by the connectivity of the metallic structures to a larger metallic ground plane. The observed effect can be largely explained by a quasi-electrostatic analysis. We also compare the THz s-SNOM results to those of the mid-IR regime, where the size-dependence becomes significant only for smaller structures. Our results reveal that the quantitative analysis of the near-field optical material contrasts in the long-wavelength regime requires a careful assessment of the size and configuration of metallic (optically conductive) structures.

The microelectronics industry is pushing the fundamental limit on the physical size of individual elements to produce faster and more powerful integrated chips. These chips have nanoscale features that dissipate power resulting in nanoscale hotspots leading to device failures. To understand the reliability impact of the hotspots, the device needs to be tested under the actual operating conditions. Therefore, the development of high-resolution thermometry techniques is required to understand the heat dissipation processes during the device operation. Recently, several thermometry techniques have been proposed,such as radiation thermometry, thermocouple based contact thermometry, scanning thermal microscopy (SThM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and transition based threshold thermometers. However, most of these techniques have limitations including the need for extensive calibration, perturbation of the actual device temperature, low throughput, and the use of ultra-high vacuum. Here, we present a facile technique, which uses a thin film contact thermometer based on the phase change material Ge2Sb2Te5, to precisely map thermal contours from the nanoscale to the microscale. Ge2Sb2Te5 undergoes a crystalline transition at Tg with large changes in its electric conductivity, optical reflectivity and density. Using this approach, we map the surface temperature of a nanowire and an embedded micro-heater on the same chip where the scales of the temperature contours differ by three orders of magnitude. The spatial resolution can be as high as 20 nanometers thanks to the continuous nature of the thin film.

Direct measurement of local phonon dispersion in individual nanostructures can greatly advance our understanding of their electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties. However, such experimental measurements require extremely high detection sensitivity and combined spatial, energy and momentum resolutions, thus has been elusive. Here, we develop a four-dimensional electron energy loss spectroscopy (4D-EELS) technique based a monochromated scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM), and present the position-dependent phonon dispersion measurement in individual boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs). Our measurement shows that the unfolded phonon dispersion of multi-walled BNNTs is close to hexagonal-boron nitride (h-BN) crystals, suggesting that interlayer coupling and curved geometry have no substantial impacts on phonon dispersion. We also find that the acoustic phonons are extremely sensitive to momentum-dependent defect scattering, while optical phonons are much less susceptible. This work not only provides useful insights into vibrational properties of BNNTs, but also demonstrates huge prospects of the developed 4D-EELS technique in nanoscale phonon dispersion measurements.

Versatile quantum modes emerge for plasmon describing the collective oscillations of free electrons in metallic nanoparticles when the particle sizes are greatly reduced. Rather than traditional nanoscale study, the understanding of quantum plasmon desires extremal atomic control of the nanoparticles, calling for size dependent plasmon measurement over a series of nanoparticles with atomically adjustable atom number over several orders of magnitude. Here we report the N dependent plasmonic evolution of atomically size selected gold particles with N= 100 70000 using electron energy loss (EEL) spectroscopy in a scanning transmission electron microscope. The EEL mapping assigns a feature at 2.7 eV as the bulk plasmon and another at 2.4 eV as surface plasmon, which evolution reveals three regimes. When N decreases from 70000 to 887, the bulk plasmon stays unchanged while the surface plasmon exhibits a slight red shift from 2.4 to 2.3 eV. It can be understood by the dominance of classical plasmon physics and electron boundary scattering induced retardation. When N further decreases from 887 to 300, the bulk plasmon disappears totally and the surface plasmon shows a steady blueshift, which indicates that the quantum confinement emerges and modifies the intraband transition. When N 100 300, the plasmon is split to three fine features, which is attributed to superimposed single electron transitions between the quantized molecular like energy level by the time dependent density functional theory calculations. The surface plasmon's excitation ratio has a scaling law with an exponential dependence on N ( N^0.669), essentially the square of the radius. A unified evolution picture from the classical to quantum, molecular plasmon is thus demonstrated.

The main challenge to exploiting plasmons for gas vibrational mode sensing is the extremely weak infrared absorption of gas species. In this work, we explore the possibility of trapping free gas molecules via surface adsorption, optical, or electrostatic fields to enhance gas-plasmon interactions and to increase plasmon sensing ability. We discuss the relative strengths of these trapping forces and found gas adsorption in a typical nanoribbon array plasmonic setup produces measurable dips in optical extinction of magnitude 0.1 % for gas concentration of about parts per thousand level.

An optimal single-photon source should deterministically deliver one and only one photon at a time, with no trade-off between the source's efficiency and the photon indistinguishability. However, all reported solid-state sources of indistinguishable single photons had to rely on polarization filtering which reduced the efficiency by 50%, which fundamentally limited the scaling of photonic quantum technologies. Here, we overcome this final long-standing challenge by coherently driving quantum dots deterministically coupled to polarization-selective Purcell microcavities--two examples are narrowband, elliptical micropillars and broadband, elliptical Bragg gratings. A polarization-orthogonal excitation-collection scheme is designed to minimize the polarization-filtering loss under resonant excitation. We demonstrate a polarized single-photon efficiency of 0.60+/-0.02 (0.56+/-0.02), a single-photon purity of 0.975+/-0.005 (0.991+/-0.003), and an indistinguishability of 0.975+/-0.006 (0.951+/-0.005) for the micropillar (Bragg grating) device. An outstanding goal in quantum optics and scalable photonic quantum technology is to develop a source that each time emits one and only one entangled photon pair with simultaneously high entanglement fidelity, extraction efficiency, and photon indistinguishability. By coherent two-photon excitation of a single InGaAs quantum dot coupled to a circular Bragg grating bullseye cavity with broadband high Purcell factor up to 11.3, we generate entangled photon pairs with a state fidelity of 0.90(1), pair generation rate of 0.59(1), pair extraction efficiency of 0.62(6), and photon indistinguishability of 0.90(1) simultaneously. Photoemission driven by a strong electric field of near-infrared or visible light, referred to as strong-field photoemission, produces attosecond electron pulses that are synchronized to the waveform of the incident light, and this principle lies at the heart of current attosecond technologies. However, full access to strong-field photoemission regimes at near-infrared wavelengths based on solid-state materials is restricted by space-charge screening and material damage at high optical-field strengths, which significantly hampers the realization of predicted attosecond technologies, such as ultra-sensitive optical phase modulation. Here, we demonstrate a new type of strong-field photoemission behaviour with extreme nonlinearity -- photoemission current scales follow a 40th power law of the optical-field strength, making use of sub-nanometric carbon nanotubes and 800 nm pulses. As a result, the total photoemission current depends on the carrier-envelope phase with a greatly improved photoemission current modulation depth of up to 100%, which has not previously been achieved. Time-dependent density functional calculations reveal the completely new behaviour of the optical-field induced tunnelling emission process directly from the valence band of the carbon nanotubes, which is an indication of full access to a strong-field photoemission regime. Furthermore, the nonlinear dynamics are observed to be tunable by changing the binding energy of the valence-band-maximum, as confirmed by Simpleman model calculations. We believe that such extreme nonlinear photoemission from nanotips offers a new means of producing extreme temporal-spatial resolved electron pulses. These results additionally provide a new design philosophy for attosecond electronics and optics by making use of tunable band structures in nanomaterials.

One of the typical features of Majorana zero mode (MZM) at the end of topological superconductor is a zero-bias peak in the tunneling spectroscopy of the normal lead-superconductor junction. In this paper we study on a model with one phonon mode coupling to the superconductor lead of the normal lead-superconductor junction, which can be viewed as an electron-lead/phonon-coupled-MZM/hole-lead structure. The phonon-coupled MZM acts as a series of channels in which electron can turn into hole by absorbing and emitting phonons. These channels present in the local density of states (LDOS) as a series of stripes, generating the corresponding peaks in the tunneling spectroscopy. In LDOS, the electron-phonon interaction narrows and redistributes the weight among stripes. In the tunneling spectroscopy, the heights of peaks present a feature of the multi-phonon process. With these investigations, our work illuminates the mechanism of phonon-assisted Andreev reflection at a Majorana zero mode., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures
