Abstract

The convergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and synthetic biology is rapidly accelerating the pace of biological discovery and engineering. AI techniques, such as large language models and biological design tools, are enabling the automated design, build, test, and learning cycles for engineered biological systems. This convergence promises to democratize synthetic biology and unlock novel applications across domains from medicine to environmental sustainability. However, it also poses significant risks around reliability, dual use, and governance. The opacity of AI models, the deskilling of workforces, and the outdated nature of current regulatory frameworks present challenges in ensuring responsible development. Urgent attention is needed to update governance structures, integrate human oversight into increasingly automated workflows, and foster a culture of responsibility among the growing community of bioengineers. Only by proactively addressing these issues can we realize the transformative potential of AI-driven synthetic biology while mitigating its risks.

Abstract

Societal Impact Statement: A diverse portfolio of genetically engineered food crops, as well as animal livestock and fish, are currently being developed and commercialized. To ensure their contributions to long‐term sustainability, a broad range of environmental, health, ethical, and societal parameters should be used in their evaluations. This paper proposes a set of parameters to evaluate the sustainability of genetically engineered food and agriculture products and discusses mechanisms to improve their governance and oversight. With such holistic evaluations, genetic engineering applications that are deemed beneficial to sustainable agriculture could be identified in an effort to foster sustainability. Summary: To achieve international sustainable development goals, food and agricultural production need to rely on sustainable and resilient practices. Traditional breeding as well as the use of new agricultural technologies, including genetic engineering and gene editing, have the potential to help achieve sustainable agrifood production. Although numerous oversight mechanisms exist to guarantee the secure and sustainable advancement and utilization of genetically engineered agrifoods, the majority of these mechanisms heavily depend on a narrow set of parameters to assess risks and safety concerning human health and nontarget organisms. However, a more comprehensive range of parameters should be considered to promote environmental and social sustainability in a more holistic manner. This Opinion article argues that to achieve a more sustainable agrifood production that relies on genetic engineering, governance systems related to new agrifood biotechnologies should incorporate a broader array of environmental, health, ethical, and societal factors to ensure their sustainability in the long‐term. To facilitate this process, we propose a set of parameters to help evaluate the sustainability of agrifoods that rely on genetic engineering. We then discuss major challenges and opportunities for formalizing sustainability parameters in US governance policy and decision‐making systems. Overall, this work contributes to further developing a more comprehensive assessment framework that aims to minimize potential risks and maximize potential benefits of agrifood biotechnology while also fostering sustainability. These predictions are foundational to learning, policymaking, and planning for the pandemic, and therefore understanding the relationship between age, comorbidities, and health outcomes is critical to assessing and managing public health risks. From a US government database of 1.4 million patient records collected in May 2020, we extracted the relationships between age and number of comorbidities at the individual level to predict the likelihood of hospitalization, admission to intensive care, and death. We then applied the relationships to each US state and a selection of different countries in order to see whether they predicted observed outcome rates. Abstract

Ataxia, progressive motor deterioration and loss of cerebellar Purkinje cells characterize spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA1), an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder. In research the cerebellar leucine-rich acidic nuclear protein (LANP) was found to interact with ataxin-1, and is expressed mainly in Purkinje cells, the main site of pathology in SCA1, indicating its involvement in SCA1 pathogenesis.

The subcellular localization of wild-type human ataxin-1 and mutant ataxin-1 in the Purkinje cells of transgenic mice was examined, to understand the pathogenesis of spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA1), a neurodegenerative disorder. Ataxin-1 was found to localize to the nuclei of cerebellar Purkinje cells. Mutant ataxin-1 was found to localize to a single nuclear structure in affected neurons.

Abstract

This paper aims to explore factors influencing people’s attitudes toward nanofood in Singapore. Drawing on expectancy-value theories, this paper conducted a web-based survey (N=1,001) to measure the influences of beliefs of food technology, evaluations of food naturalness, and media consumption about food safety on attitudes toward nanofood and willingness to purchase nanofood products. Results suggested that attitudes toward nanofood are directly shaped by beliefs of food technology, whose influence is partially mediated by media consumption. Attitudes toward nanofood were also positively related to willingness to purchase nanofood. However, our study found no significant effect of food naturalness evaluations on attitudes toward nanofood. This paper helps to elucidate the significance of favorable perceptions of food technology and informative media messages in encouraging positive attitudes toward nanofood. Accepted version

Abstract

The Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies (PEN) product database began in 2005. The PEN Consumer Products Inventory (CPI) has been frequently cited in scholarly and popular articles as well as reports from government and industry. The CPI has been used to establish a baseline or benchmark on the pervasiveness of products produced by nanotechnology and/or incorporating nanoparticles. In this article, a team of researchers examine and validate a sample from the CPI involving four prominent categories of nanoparticles (carbon, gold, silver, and iron). The authors conclude that the CPI has substantive deficiencies that call the validity of claims associated with the CPI into question. Individuals and organizations citing the CPI should be wary of over‐claiming the reliability and validity of the presence of nanotechnology in consumer products. Published version
