Objectives: Long-term exposure to air pollution has been associated with higher risk of cardiovascular mortality. Less is known about the association of air pollution with initial development of cardiovascular disease. Herein, the association between low-level exposure to air pollutants and subclinical carotid atherosclerosis in adults without known clinical cardiovascular disease was investigated. Design: Cross-sectional analysis within a prospective cohort study. Setting: The Canadian Alliance for Healthy Hearts and Minds Cohort Study; a pan-Canadian cohort of cohorts. Participants: Canadian adults (n = 6645) recruited between 2014–2018 from the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia, were studied, for whom averages of exposures to nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) were estimated for the years 2008–2012. Main outcome measure: Carotid vessel wall volume (CWV) measured by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Results: In adjusted linear mixed models, PM2.5 was not consistently associated with CWV (per 5 μg/m3 PM2.5; adjusted estimate = -8.4 mm3; 95% Confidence Intervals (CI) -23.3 to 6.48; p = 0.27). A 5 ppb higher NO2 concentration was associated with 11.8 mm3 lower CWV (95% CI -16.2 to -7.31; p<0.0001). A 3 ppb increase in O3 was associated with 9.34 mm3 higher CWV (95% CI 4.75 to 13.92; p<0.0001). However, the coarse/insufficient O3 resolution (10 km) is a limitation. Conclusions: In a cohort of healthy Canadian adults there was no consistent association between PM2.5 or NO2 and increased CWV as a measure of subclinical atherosclerosis by MRI. Purpose: The objective of this study was to characterize the electrophysiological characteristics of nonrecurrent inferior laryngeal nerves (NRILNs) that were dissected via intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) and concomitant vascular anomalies in patients with NRILNs. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 7865 patients who underwent thyroidectomy with IONM at three tertiary referral centers. The study included 42 patients in whom an NRILN was detected. IONM data and postoperative vocal cord (VC) examinations were recorded for all patients. The absence of an initial vagal EMG response and/or a short (<3.5 ms) latency period during the initial vagal stimulation or the inability to identify the RLN within the Beahrs triangle was considered highly suspicious for the presence of an NRILN. Postoperative cross-sectional imaging was performed in 36 out of 42 patients to assess any concurrent vascular anomalies. Results: The prevalence of NRILN was 0.53%. An NRILN was suspected due to EMG findings in 32 (76%) patients and the inability to identify the RLN within the Beahrs triangle in the remaining 10 (24%) patients. The mean right VN latency period was 3.05 ± 0.15 ms. The V1 latency period of the right VN was shorter than 3.5 ms in 39 (93%) and longer than 3.5 ms in 3 (7%) patients. One of these three patients with latency>3.5ms had a large mediastinal goiter. Transient VC paralysis occurred in one (2.4%) patient. Of the 36 patients with postoperative imaging data, 33 (91.4%) had vascular anomalies. All 33 patients had aberrant right subclavian arteries, and 13 (39.4%) also had accompanying additional vascular anomalies. Conclusion: The NRILN is an anatomical variation that increases the risk of nerve injury. Observation of an absent EMG response and/or a short latency period during the initial vagal stimulation facilitates the detection of an NRILN at an early stage of thyroidectomy in the majority of patients. Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is caused by damage to the mechanosensory hair cells and auditory neurons of the cochlea. The development of imaging tools that can directly visualize or provide functional information about a patient’s cochlear cells is critical to identify the pathobiological defect and determine the cells’ receptiveness to emerging SNHL treatments. However, the cochlea’s small size, embedded location within dense bone, and sensitivity to perturbation have historically precluded high-resolution clinical imaging. Previously, we developed micro-optical coherence tomography (μOCT) as a platform for otologic imaging in animal models and human cochleae. Here we report on advancing μOCT technology to obtain simultaneously acquired and co-localized images of cell viability/metabolic activity through dynamic μOCT (DμOCT) imaging of intracellular motion. DμOCT obtains cross-sectional images of ATP-dependent movement of intracellular organelles and cytoskeletal polymerization by acquiring sequential μOCT images and computing intensity fluctuation frequency metrics on a pixelwise basis. Using a customized benchtop DμOCT system, we demonstrate the detailed resolution of anatomical and metabolic features of cells within the organ of Corti, via an apical cochleostomy, in freshly-excised adult mouse cochleae. Further, we show that DμOCT is capable of capturing rapid changes in cochlear cell metabolism following an ototoxic insult to induce cell death and actin stabilization. Notably, as few as 6 frames can be used to reconstruct cochlear DμOCT images with sufficient detail to discern individual cells and their metabolic state. This article presents the results of testing the suitability of X-ray computed tomography for the quality control of the casting moulds used for producing turbine blades. The research was focused on the analysis of cross-sectional images, spatial models and the porosity of moulds using a Phoenix L 450 microtomograph. The research material consisted of samples from three mixtures of ceramic materials and binders intended for producing casting moulds using the lost wax method. Various configurations of filling materials (Molochite and quartz flours) and binder (Remasol, Ludox PX 30 and hydrolysed ethyl silicate) mixtures were considered. X-ray computed tomography enabled the detection of a number of defects in the ceramic mass related to the distribution of mass components, porosity concentration and defects resulting from the specificity of the mould production. It was found that casting mould quality control on cross-sectional tomographic images is faster and as accurate as the analysis of three-dimensional models and allows for the detection of a whole range of ceramic defects, but the usefulness of the images is greatest only when the cross-sections are taken at an appropriate angle relative to the object being examined. [Display omitted] Electrowetting on conventional dielectrics requires direct fluid-electrode contact to generate strong electric fields at the three-phase contact line to modulate the wetting. Since the electric field alters wetting, the modulation of wetting can be achieved by applying an external electric field through insulated electrodes, preventing the liquid from contacting the electrodes. A simple and efficient method for non-contact between the fluid and the electrode external electric field modulation of fluid wetting was proposed. The switching ability of droplets on microgroove surfaces from Cassie-Baxter to Wenzel wetting state under an external electric field was used to drive and quantify the relationship between wetting, contact angle, and the applied voltage. Applying an external electric field modulates the wetting of deionized water, ionic liquids, and high-viscosity liquids on microgrooves. The wetting degree of liquid can be controlled by adjusting the external voltage parameters. The finite element simulations revealed that the Maxwell force drove this process. The effects of substrate size and liquid properties on wetting behavior were also examined. Post-application cross-sectional imaging showed the formation of a conformal interface, highlighting the relevance of the proposed method in advanced adaptive shape fabrication and microfluidic control, among other applications. Simple Summary: The diagnosis of nasal cavity disease (ND) in dogs typically requires comprehensive diagnostics under general anesthesia including cross-sectional imaging and rhinoscopy. Therefore, dogs with nasal discharge are often only presented for diagnostics after weeks of symptomatic or even antibiotic therapy, even though primary bacterial rhinitis is uncommon. In a previous study, the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) differed significantly between dogs with malignant tumors and benign pathology. To further investigate the value of blood tests for diagnosis, the aim of this second part of the study was to evaluate serum markers for their diagnostic utility and whether they may be helpful in making the diagnosis of ND quickly and cost-effectively. Dogs with additional diseases detected by a whole-body CT scan and blood tests were excluded. No significant differences were found between groups for the here evaluated markers C-reactive protein, haptoglobin, and 25-hydroxyvitamin-D. In this prospective blinded study, canine C-reactive protein (c-CRP), haptoglobin (HPT), and 25-hydroxyvitamin-D (25(OH)D) were investigated for their diagnostic value in 55 dogs with nasal cavity disease (ND). After comprehensive diagnostics including a culture-dependent microbiological examination (ME) of nasal swabs, 17 dogs were excluded due to additionally detected systemic diseases or steroid pre-treatment. Included were 25 dogs with malignant ND (13 carcinomas and 12 sarcomas) and 30 dogs with benign ND (7 benign tumors, 13 idiopathic rhinitis (IR), and 10 others), as well as 10 controls. In none of the 72 dogs with ND was primary bacterial rhinitis diagnosed. Although within the reference interval, compared to the controls, c-CRP was significantly higher in dogs with ND in general and in every subgroup except for benign tumors. Serum HPT concentrations were not different among groups. Compared to the controls, 25(OH)D concentrations were significantly lower (p = 0.041) in malignant ND and sarcomas (p = 0.025). Despite pre-treatment with antibiotics (40/54; 74.1%), in 23/51 (45%) dogs, the ME was positive. Cultivated bacteria did not differ significantly between nasal diseases. The serum markers were not significantly different regarding the positivity of ME. In conclusion, the investigated serum markers were not clinically useful for the reliable detection of canine ND, as was the ME. Because of the low number of dogs with IR and positive or negative ME, further studies regarding c-CRP are needed in a larger group of IR dogs without concomitant diseases to reliably evaluate its utility in IR dogs with suspected secondary bacterial nasal infection. Objectives: To assess the impact of the presence or position (buccal/palatal) of impacted canines on trabecular bone density using fractal analysis (FA) on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, and to compare the results with a control group without impacted canines. Methods: This retrospective study included 41 patients with unilateral impacted canines (30 palatal, 11 buccal) and a control group of 39 patients who underwent surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion. All patients had CBCT images recorded for diagnostic and treatment purposes. Cross-sectional CBCT images were obtained between the first and second premolars on both sides of the patients' maxilla. From these images, fractal dimension (FD) was measured in a 20 × 20 pixel region of interest in the trabecular bone using the ImageJ software. Results: The FD values were significantly higher on the impacted side in the impacted canine group (p = 0.02). Within the impacted canine group, a significant increase in FD was observed on the impacted side in the buccal-impacted subgroup (p = 0.02), while no significant difference was observed in the palatal-impacted subgroup (p > 0.05). Conclusions: According to the results of our study, there is an association between the position of the impacted canine and trabecular bone density. An increased trabecular bone density may play a role in the etiology of buccally impacted canines. Clinicians should consider anchorage planning, and appropriate force level, during the forced eruption of buccally impacted canines with high surrounding bone density, to minimize undesirable movements and achieve optimal treatment outcomes. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA) are pivotal imaging techniques in diagnosing and managing macular disorders, providing high-resolution cross-sectional images of the retina. Although OCT artifacts are often deemed undesirable, they can paradoxically offer valuable insights into retinal pathology. This review explores the potential of OCT and OCTA artifacts to serve as indicators of pathological correlates in various macular conditions. The study emphasizes the importance of recognizing and leveraging these artifacts to refine clinicopathologic correlates characterizing several macular disorders, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vascular occlusive disease. OCT artifacts can reflect the ultrastructure and composition of pathological features, and their recognition can thus expand the understanding of the pathogenesis and improve the diagnostic interpretation of macular disorders. With the widespread use of OCT and OCTA technologies, identifying artifacts with clinicopathologic significance is of paramount importance and may have significant implications for management and prognosis. An Open-Graded Friction Course (OGFC) presents a rough surface and a porous structure and provides skid resistance under wet conditions, differing from that of a dense graded mixture. This study explored the distribution of surface macrotexture with depth in OGFC. Using cross-sectional images and semantic image segmentation techniques, the internal structure, porosity, and void size distribution were analyzed to assess the effectiveness of rainfall drainage. Skid resistance was evaluated with a British Pendulum Tester, focusing on the influence of surface macrotexture and internal macrostructure, particularly with regard to contact depth. Results show that finer gradations increase surface roughness peaks, which are concentrated near the top surface. In contrast, coarser mixtures exhibit a greater effective contact depth and more peaks with higher curvature. Finer gradations also result in lower porosity, greater void dispersion, and smaller average void diameters. During heavy rainfall, OGFC-13 exhibits the highest friction coefficient due to its effective contact, surface roughness, and internal voids, which facilitate water expulsion. Short fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites (SFRTC) have gained popularity in the material extrusion (MEX) method, which is an additive manufacturing (AM) technology, allowing for the simpler and more cost-effective production of polymer composites. However, parts produced using MEX 3D printing technology often exhibit poor mechanical properties and surface quality compared to products manufactured using injection molding, which is one of the main disadvantages of this method. Various methods are used to overcome these challenges, such as production in a vacuum environment, heat-based processes, ultrasonic vibrations, and others. The objective of this study was to achieve parts with lower porosity and improved mechanical properties when printed in a vacuum environment compared to an atmospheric environment. Additionally, an investigation into the optimization of printing parameters was conducted to determine the parameters that yield the highest mechanical properties. For this purpose, SFRTC parts were printed at different vacuum levels (0.5, 10, 100 mbar), and they were subjected to flexural tests to determine their mechanical properties. The results showed that the flexural stress and elastic modulus of the samples produced in a 0.5 mbar vacuum environment increased by 79.75% and 39.41%, respectively, compared to samples produced in an atmospheric environment. Furthermore, the cross-sectional images of the samples were examined using an optical microscope, revealing the lowest porosity in the samples printed in 0.5 mbar vacuum environment. Background: Biliary dilatation without obvious etiology on cross sectional imaging warrants further investigation. This study aimed to assess yield of endoscopic ultrasound in providing etiologic diagnosis in such situation. Methods: Prospective cohort of consecutive patients with biliary dilatation & non diagnostic computed tomography (CT) and /or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) underwent endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) with/without fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and were followed clinically, biochemically with/without radiology for up to six months. The findings of EUS were corroborated with histopathology of surgical specimens and endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (ERCP) findings in relevant cases. Results: Median age of 121 patients completing follow up was 55 years. 98.2% patients were symptomatic and median common bile duct (CBD) diameter was 13 mm. EUS was able to identify lesions attributable for biliary dilatation in (67 out of 121) 55.4% cases with ampullary neoplasm being the commonest (29 out of 67 i.e. 43%). Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified jaundice as the predictor of positive diagnosis on EUS, of finding ampullary lesion and pancreatic lesion on EUS. EUS had sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and diagnostic accuracy of 95.65%, 94.23%, 95.65% and 95.04% respectively in providing etiologic diagnosis. Threshold value for baseline bilirubin of 10 mg%, for baseline CA 19.9 of 225 u/L and for largest CBD diameter of 16 mm were determined to have specificity of 98%, 95%, 92.5% respectively of finding a positive diagnosis on EUS. Conclusion: EUS provides considerable diagnostic yield with high accuracy in biliary dilatation when cross sectional imaging fails to provide etiologic diagnosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

GISTs develop from specialized cells called interstitial cells of Cajal, which regulate digestive tract movements. These tumors can vary in size and may not always cause symptoms. Common symptoms include abdominal pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, or a feeling of fullness. Gastric GISTs are typically diagnosed through imaging tests like CT scans and are confirmed with a biopsy. Treatment options for GISTs depend on factors such as tumor size, location, and aggressiveness. Surgical removal is often the primary treatment, with medication (tyrosine kinase inhibitors) used before or after surgery to shrink the tumor or prevent recurrence. Regular monitoring is crucial because GISTs can grow slowly or aggressively. Overall, a multidisciplinary team is essential for managing localized gastric GISTs effectively. Gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are rare, neuroectodermal tumors primarily residing in the stomach with characteristic genetic mutations. They are often identified using ultrasound and cross-sectional imaging, or they are noted during endoscopy. Localized gastric GISTs are commonly treated with surgical resection, with the possible use of neoadjuvant or adjuvant medical therapies as they are considered to have malignant potential. The use of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) such as imatinib has been shown to successfully reduce pre-operative tumor burden, recurrence, and disease progression. Surgical resection considerations vary depending on tumor size, location, and malignant potential. Neoadjuvant and adjuvant TKI therapy dosing varies in response to the type of GIST mutation present and greatly influences prognosis. Novel cooperative minimally invasive surgical techniques and targeted therapies are currently in development to address challenges in GIST treatment for tumors in challenging locations or with significant potential for progression. The management of localized gastric GISTs continues to rapidly evolve; each case should be managed individually, where care is taken in considering details, including tumor location, tumor size, and the molecular genetic profile, before embarking on a course of treatment. Wagyu beef is gaining worldwide popularity, primarily due to the fineness of its marbling. Currently, the evaluation of this marbling is performed visually by graders. This method has several issues: varying evaluation standards among graders, reduced accuracy due to long working hours and external factors causing fatigue, and fluctuations in grading standards due to the grader's mood at the time. This paper proposes the use of fractal analysis for the grading evaluation of beef marbling to achieve automatic grading without the inconsistencies caused by human factors. In the experiments, cross-sectional images of the parts used for visual judgment were taken, and fractal analysis was performed on these images to evaluate them using fractal dimensions. The results confirmed a correlation between the marbling evaluation and the fractal dimensions, demonstrating that quantitative evaluation can be achieved, moving away from qualitative visual assessments. This paper presents a hybrid study of convolutional neural networks (CNNs), machine learning (ML), and transfer learning (TL) in the context of brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The anatomy of the brain is very complex; inside the skull, a brain tumour can form in any part. With MRI technology, cross-sectional images are generated, and radiologists can detect the abnormalities. When the size of the tumour is very small, it is undetectable to the human visual system, necessitating alternative analysis using AI tools. As is widely known, CNNs explore the structure of an image and provide features on the SoftMax fully connected (SFC) layer, and the classification of the items that belong to the input classes is established. Two comparison studies for the classification of meningioma tumours and healthy brains are presented in this paper: (i) classifying MRI images using an original CNN and two pre-trained CNNs, DenseNet169 and EfficientNetV2B0; (ii) determining which CNN and ML combination yields the most accurate classification when SoftMax is replaced with three ML models; in this context, Random Forest (RF), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), and Support Vector Machine (SVM) were proposed. In a binary classification of tumours and healthy brains, the EfficientNetB0-SVM combination shows an accuracy of 99.5% on the test dataset. Fibrosis is a pathological process that occurs due to chronic inflammation, leading to the proliferation of fibroblasts and the excessive deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM). The process of long-term fibrosis initiates with tissue hypofunction and progressively culminates in the ultimate manifestation of organ failure. Intestinal fibrosis is a significant complication of Crohn's disease (CD) that can result in persistent luminal narrowing and strictures, which are difficult to reverse. In recent years, there have been significant advances in our understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying intestinal fibrosis in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Significant progress has been achieved in the fields of pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of intestinal fibrosis in the last few years. A significant amount of research has also been conducted in the field of biomarkers for the prediction or detection of intestinal fibrosis, including novel cross-sectional imaging modalities such as positron emission tomography (PET) and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). Molecular imaging represents a promising biomedical approach that enables the non-invasive visualization of cellular and subcellular processes. Molecular imaging has the potential to be employed for early detection, disease staging, and prognostication in addition to assessing disease activity and treatment response in IBD. Molecular imaging methods also have a potential role to enabling minimally invasive assessment of intestinal fibrosis. Pancreatic cystic lesions (PCLs) are increasingly diagnosed owing to the wide use of cross-sectional imaging techniques. Accurate identification of PCL categories is critical for determining the indications for surgical intervention or surveillance. The classification and management of PCLs rely on a comprehensive and interdisciplinary evaluation, integrating clinical data, imaging findings, and cyst fluid markers. EUS (endoscopic ultrasound) has become the widely used diagnostic tool for the differentiation of pancreatic cystic lesions, offering detailed evaluation of even small pancreatic lesions with high sensitivity and specificity. Additionally, endoscopic ultrasound–fine-needle aspiration enhances diagnostic capabilities through cytological analysis and the assessment of fluid viscosity, tumor glycoprotein concentration, amylase levels, and molecular scrutiny. These detailed insights play a pivotal role in improving the clinical prognosis and management of pancreatic neoplasms. This review will focus mainly on the latest recommendations for the differentiation, management, and treatment of pancreatic cystic lesions, highlighting their clinical significance. Crohn's disease (CD) is frequently complicated by strictures that can be either inflammatory or fibrostenotic. This distinction is important for deciding the best treatment course, but it can be difficult to determine clinically, sometimes even by advanced imaging techniques. We performed miRNA PCR panel screening on pooled samples of ileum with CD fibrostenosis or inflammatory stenosis. Eight miRNAs with profibrotic (miR-93-5p, miR-376c-3p and miR-424-5p), or fibroprotective (miR-133a-3p, miR-133b, miR-193a-5p, miR-335-5p and miR-378a-3p) functions described in the literature were selected for validation on 20 samples each of CD with fibrostenosis or inflammatory stenosis, with a separate sampling of the submucosa and subserosa. The results showed significant differences between the groups in subserosal samples, with upregulation of profibrotic miRNAs and downregulation of fibroprotective miRNAs in fibrostenosis compared to inflammatory stenosis. Only miR-424-5p showed a significant difference in the submucosa. There were significant differences in miRNA expression between subserosa and submucosa. Our results provide further evidence that the major differences between fibrostenosis and inflammatory stenosis are located in the subserosa, which is inaccessible to endoscopic sampling, highlighting the need for cross-sectional imaging or serological markers. Introduction: Complicated perianal disease (cPD) may be the sole presentation of Crohn's disease (CD). The role of small-bowel capsule endoscopy (SBCE) in the diagnostic algorithm of cPD is unclear. We aimed to evaluate the role of SBCE as a diagnostic tool, in patients with cPD, after a negative standard workup for CD. Methods: A multicenter, retrospective, cross-sectional study, in patients with cPD, and negative standard workup for CD (ileocolonoscopy and cross-sectional imaging), who underwent SBCE for suspected CD. Demographics, biomarkers, and the Lewis Score (LS) were recorded and analyzed. An LS ≥ 135 was considered a positive SBCE for diagnosing CD. Results: Ninety-one patients were included: 65 (71.4%) males; median age: 37 (29–51) years; cPD duration: 25.1 (12.5–66.1) months. Positive SBCE: 24/91 (26.4%) patients. Fecal calprotectin (FC) positively correlated with LS (r = 0.81; p < 0.001). FC levels of 100 µg/g and 50 µg/g had a sensitivity of only 40% and 55% to rule out small-bowel CD, with a negative predictive value (NPV) of only 76% and 80%, respectively. Conclusions: SBCE contributed to CD diagnosis in a quarter of patients with cPD after a negative standard workup. FC levels correlated with the degree of inflammation defined by the LS. A pulsating waterjet is a technological modification of a conventional waterjet that utilizes ultrasonic vibrations to generate a modulated jet, resulting in repetitive fatigue loading of the material. The erosion efficiency of the ultrasonic pulsating waterjet is majorly determined by the hydraulic factors and its interaction with standoff distance. However, the dependency of the wear rates on different hydraulic factors and formulation of an implicit prediction model for determining effective standoff distance is still not present to date. Therefore, in this study, the combined dependency of the supply pressure (20-40 MPa), nozzle diameter (0.3-1.0 mm), and standoff distance (1-121 mm) on wear rates of AW-6060 aluminum alloy are studied. Statistical analysis is used to determine the statistically significant factors and formulate regression equations to determine output responses within the experimental domain. The surface topography and sub-surface microhardness of the eroded grooves were studied. The results show that both the disintegration depth and the material removal increase with an increase in the nozzle diameter and supply pressure. However, the dependency of the output responses on nozzle diameter is statistically more evident than supply pressure and two-way interactions. Cross-sectional images of the grooves showed typical hydrodynamic erosion characteristics in erosion cavities, subsurface voids, and material upheaving. Pancreatic cystic lesions (PCLs) pose a diagnostic challenge due to their increasing incidence and the limitations of cross-sectional imaging and endoscopic-ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA). EUS-guided through the needle biopsy (EUS-TTNB) has emerged as a promising tool for improving the accuracy of cyst type determination and neoplastic risk stratification. EUS-TTNB demonstrates superior diagnostic performance over EUS-FNA, providing critical preoperative information that can significantly influence patient management and reduce unnecessary surgeries. However, the procedure has risks, with an overall adverse event rate of approximately 9%. Preventive measures and further prospective studies are essential to optimize its safety and efficacy. This review highlights the potential of EUS-TTNB to enhance the diagnostic and management approaches for patients with PCLs. Pancreatic cystic lesions (PCLs) have increased in prevalence due to the increased usage and advancements in cross-sectional abdominal imaging. Current diagnostic techniques cannot distinguish between PCLs requiring surgery, close surveillance, or expectant management. This has increased the morbidity and healthcare costs from inappropriately aggressive and conservative management strategies. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) needle-based confocal laser endomicroscopy (nCLE) allows for microscopic examination and delineation of the surface epithelium of PCLs. Landmark studies have identified characteristics distinguishing various types of PCLs, confirmed the high diagnostic yield of EUS-nCLE (especially for PCLs with an equivocal diagnosis), and shown that EUS-nCLE helps to change management and reduce healthcare costs. Refining procedure technique and reducing procedure length have improved the safety of EUS-nCLE. The utilization of artificial intelligence and its combination with other EUS-based advanced diagnostic techniques would further improve the results of EUS-based PCL diagnosis. A structured training program and device improvements to allow more complete mapping of the pancreas cyst epithelium will be crucial for the widespread adoption of this promising technology. This study aimed to validate the accuracy of identifying Japanese hardwood species from microscopic cross-sectional images using convolutional neural networks (CNN). The overarching goal is to create a versatile model that can handle microscopic cross-sectional images of wood. To gauge the practical accuracy, a comprehensive database of microscopic images of Japanese hardwood species was provided by the Forest Research and Management Organization. These images, captured from various positions on wood blocks, different trees, and diverse production areas, resulted in substantial intra-species image variation. To assess the effect of data distribution on accuracy, two datasets, D1 and D2, representing a segregated and a non-segregated dataset, respectively--from 1,000 images (20 images from each of the 50 species) were compiled. For D1, distinct images were allocated to the training, validation, and testing sets. However, in D2, the same images were used for both training and testing. Furthermore, the influence of the evaluation methodology on the identification accuracy was investigated by comparing two approaches: patch evaluation and E2 image evaluation. Introduction: The uniqueness of the atlas (C1) and axis (C2) cervical vertebrae helps in transmitting weight from the cranial cavity to the rest of the vertebral column. A detailed understanding of the C1 and C2 morphometric dimensions is essential for evaluating treatment protocols such as screw placement and intralaminar fixations to provide stability for the occipitocervical complex. Computerised Tomography (CT) scan images are best for demonstrating the osseous margins. Aim: To assess the relationship between the linear morphometric measurements of the CT images and dry C1 and C2 vertebrae. Materials and Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted using 35 atlas (C1) and 35 axis (C2) dry bones from the Department of Anatomy, Karuna Institute of Medical Sciences, Palakkad, Kerala, India, from August 2023 to October 2023. A total of 35 CT scan images were also taken for the study. Siemens Syngo software tool was utilised to assess the C1 and C2 vertebrae. Measurements of the vertebral canal, foramen transversarium, superior articular facets, vertebral artery groove, dens, and body were performed on dry C1, C2, and CT images. Descriptive statistics were evaluated using mean, standard deviation, percentage difference, and mean deviation. The unpaired t-test was used to test significance, with p-value <0.05 considered statistically significant. Results: Concerning the anatomical parameters, between the dry C1 and CT scan images, all linear parameters were statistically significant (p-value <0.05), except for the vertebral artery grooveinner and outer distances, which were not statistically significant. Regarding C2, when comparing anatomical parameters between dry vertebrae and CT scan images, the width of the body and the length of the vertebral canal were not statistically significant, while all other C2 parameters were statistically significant (p-value <0.05). Conclusion: The results obtained from the study on the atlas and axis may be valuable for operating surgeons during surgical procedures in the craniovertebral region. Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate overdilation of 10-mm standard and 8–10 mm controlled-expansion Viatorr stents to 12 mm during transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) placement when insufficient reduction (<50%) in portosystemic gradient (PSG) is achieved with standard 10 mm dilation. Materials and Methods It is a single-institution, institutional review board-approved, retrospective review of TIPS (2013–2022) to identify patients in the overdilation group (12 mm dilation of a 10-mm stent) and a control group (10 mm dilation of a 10-mm stent) matched for age, indication, stent type, Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score, pre-TIPS PSG, and variceal embolization. Stent diameter, technical success, clinical outcomes, and adverse events were assessed for both groups. Results TIPS was created for the overdilation group (n = 35, 57 ± 11 years, 69% male; MELD: 14 ± 5) and control group (n = 35, 57 ± 11 years, 83% male; MELD: 14 ± 5). Overdilation to 12 mm adequately reduced PSG by more than 50% (55 vs. 65% in the control group, p = 0.11). The stent diameter was larger in the overdilation group on cross-sectional imaging (9.8 ± 0.2 vs. 9.5 ± 0.4 mm, p < 0.001), with an estimated 57% higher volume flow rate (p = 0.002). Patients were followed for a median of 11.3 months (range: 0.03–75) and 15.6 months (range: 0.03–106) in the overdilation and control groups, respectively. There was an equivalent rate of ascites resolution (56 vs. 63%, p = 0.68) and rebleeding (13 vs. 17%, p = 0.82) in the overdilation and control groups, with a similar risk of new-onset hepatic encephalopathy (41 vs. 33%, p = 0.51) and TIPS occlusion (11 vs. 9%, p = 0.69). Overdilation did not result in any instance of stent fracture. Conclusion Overdilation of 10-mm Viatorr stents with 12 mm balloons may provide benefit by potentially reducing PSG further for patients initially having inadequate PSG reduction with short-term safety. The defects distribution of ion-implanted SiC is a key to understanding changes in the electronic, optical, and mechanical properties of SiC devices. However, accessing the defect distribution within the sample primarily relies on simulation, yet a number of factors remain unaccounted for in the simulation results, ultimately resulting in numerous inaccuracies. To address this issue, a defect distribution investigation method based on the combination of argon ion etching and deep-ultraviolet (DUV) Raman spectroscopy has been established. The defects at different depths were exposed to the surface by etching, and the crystal quality of the surface layer was assessed using Raman spectra with a 266 nm DUV laser. The spectra for the H+ implanted 4H-SiC showed that the full width at half maximum of the transverse optical mode at 781 cm−1 and the longitudinal optical mode at 965 cm−1 exhibited an increasing and then decreasing trend, approximate to a Gaussian distribution. These results were confirmed with the transmission electron microscopy cross-sectional image and SRIM-2013 simulation. Autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) is a unique form of chronic pancreatitis with a multifactorial pathogenesis. Historically, it has been classified as type 1 and type 2, according to its clinical and histological features. The diagnosis of AIP is challenging and relies on a combination of clinical, histopathologic, serologic, and imaging characteristics. In the available guidelines, the imaging hallmarks of AIP are based on cross-sectional imaging and cholangiopancreatography retrograde endoscopic findings. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is generally used for pancreatic tissue acquisition to rule out pancreatic cancer and diagnose AIP with limited accuracy. Several papers reported the reliability of EUS for providing informative morphologic features of AIP. Nowadays, the improvement in the resolution of EUS conventional images and the development of new ancillary technologies have further increased the diagnostic yield of EUS: contrast-enhanced EUS and EUS elastography are non-invasive and real-time techniques that strongly support the diagnosis and management of pancreatic diseases. In this review article, we will present the role of conventional EUS and ancillary diagnostic techniques in the diagnosis of AIP to support clinicians and endosonographers in managing this condition. Surgical oncology often requires the use of contrast-enhanced cross-sectional imaging preoperatively to characterize solitary tumours and identify sentinel lymph nodes. Intraoperative optical guidance can effectively aid tissue-sparing tumour excision and locate sentinel lymph nodes. Nanotrast-CF800 (CF800) is a novel dual-modality contrast agent, which co-encapsulates iohexol and indocyanine green (ICG) within a liposomal nanoparticle. It was developed for preoperative and intraoperative imaging of solitary tumours and sentinel lymph node mapping and its efficacy has been demonstrated in preclinical animal models (Zheng et al. 2015). The objective of this study is to evaluate the safety profile of CF800 following intravenous administration in healthy dogs. Six research dogs were randomized into two groups. Group 1 received a low dose (1 mL/kg) and group 2 received a high dose (5 mL/kg). Dogs were placed under general anesthesia and a continuous rate infusion of CF800 was administered based on group allocation. Physiologic parameters including heart rate, respiratory rate, direct arterial blood pressure, cardiac output, and temperature were measured at set time points. Plasma concentrations of iohexol, ICG, and histamine were measured at set time points. Dogs underwent whole body computed tomography scans pre-injection, 2-, and 7-days post-injection (p.i.). Contrast enhancement was measured in select organ systems and great vessels at each time point. There were no significant changes in physiologic parameters following IV infusion of CF800 in all dogs. Plasma iohexol and ICG concentrations peaked at 1 day p.i., while histamine concentrations peaked at 30 minutes p.i. Significant contrast enhancement was noted within the liver, heart, aorta, and caudal vena cava on day 2 p.i., which was significantly different compared to baseline. Introduction/aim: Radiological imaging is crucial in modern clinical practice and requires thorough and early training. An understanding of cross-sectional imaging is essential for effective interpretation of such imaging. This study examines the extent to which completing an undergraduate ultrasound course has positive effects on the development of visual-spatial ability, knowledge of anatomical spatial relationships, understanding of radiological cross-sectional images, and theoretical ultrasound competencies. Material and methods: This prospective observational study was conducted at a medical school with 3rd year medical students as part of a voluntary extracurricular ultrasound course. The participants completed evaluations (7-level Likert response formats and dichotomous questions "yes/no") and theoretical tests at two time points (T1 = pre course; T2 = post course) to measure their subjective and objective cross-sectional imaging skills competencies. A questionnaire on baseline values and previous experience identified potential influencing factors. Results: A total of 141 participants were included in the study. Most participants had no previous general knowledge of ultrasound diagnostics (83%), had not yet performed a practical ultrasound examination (87%), and had not attended any courses on sonography (95%). Significant subjective and objective improvements in competencies were observed after the course, particularly in the subjective sub-area of "knowledge of anatomical spatial relationships" (p = 0.009). Similarly, participants showed improvements in the objective sub-areas of "theoretical ultrasound competencies" (p < 0.001), "radiological cross-section understanding and knowledge of anatomical spatial relationships in the abdomen" (p < 0.001), "visual-spatial ability in radiological cross-section images" (p < 0.001), and "visual-spatial ability" (p = 0.020). Conclusion: Ultrasound training courses can enhance the development of visual-spatial ability, knowledge of anatomical spatial relationships, radiological cross-sectional image understanding, and theoretical ultrasound competencies. Due to the reciprocal positive effects of the training, students should receive radiology training at an early stage of their studies to benefit as early as possible from the improved skills, particularly in the disciplines of anatomy and radiology. Background: The detection of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) has been rising due to the enhanced utilization of cross-sectional imaging and incidentally discovered lesions with adverse pathology demonstrate potential for metastasis. The purpose of our study was to determine the clinical and multiparametric dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (CEMRI) associated independent predictors of adverse pathology for cT1/2 RCC and develop the predictive model. Methods: We recruited 105 cT1/2 RCC patients between 2018 and 2022, all of whom underwent preoperative CEMRI and had complete clinicopathological data. Adverse pathology was defined as RCC patients with nuclear grade III-IV; pT3a upstage; type II papillary RCC, collecting duct or renal medullary carcinoma, unclassified RCC; sarcomatoid/rhabdoid features. The qualitative and quantitative CEMRI parameters were independently reviewed by two radiologists. Univariate and multivariate binary logistic regression analyses were utilized to determine the independent predictors of adverse pathology for cT1/2 RCC and construct the predictive model. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, confusion matrix, calibration plot, and decision curve analysis (DCA) were conducted to compare the diagnostic performance of different predictive models. The individual risk scores and linear predicted probabilities were calculated for risk stratification, and the Kaplan–Meier curve and log-rank tests were used for survival analysis. Results: Overall, 45 patients were pathologically confirmed as RCC with adverse pathology. Clinical characteristics, including gender, and CEMRI parameters, including RENAL score, tumor margin irregularity, necrosis, and tumor apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) value were identified as independent predictors of adverse pathology for cT1/2 RCC. The clinical-CEMRI predictive model yielded an area under the curve (AUC) of the ROC curve of 0.907, which outperformed the clinical model or CEMRI signature model alone. Good calibration, better clinical usefulness, excellent risk stratification ability of adverse pathology and prognosis were also achieved for the clinical-CEMRI predictive model. Conclusions: The proposed clinical-CEMRI predictive model offers the potential for preoperative prediction of adverse pathology for cT1/2 RCC. Thyroid cancer is the most common head and neck cancer (HNC) in the world. In this article, we comprehensively cover baseline, posttreatment, and follow-up imaging recommendations for thyroid carcinomas along with the eighth edition of the tumor, node, metastasis (TNM) staging system proposed by the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) and the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). We include characterization and risk stratification of thyroid nodules on ultrasound (US) proposed by various international bodies. Management guidelines (depending upon the type of thyroid carcinoma) based on the international consensus recommendations (mainly by the American Thyroid Association) are also extensively covered in this article, including the role of a radioiodine scan. The management of recurrent disease is also briefly elucidated in this article. In addition, we cover the risk factors and etiopathogenesis of thyroid carcinoma along with the non-imaging diagnostic workup essential for thyroid carcinoma management, including the significance of genetic mutations. US is the diagnostic imaging modality of choice, with US-guided fine needle aspiration (FNA) being the procedure of choice for tissue diagnosis. The roles of computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/CT (FDG-PET/CT) in thyroid carcinoma staging are also specified. Pancreatic cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Pancreatic lesions consist of both neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions and often pose a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge due to similar clinical and radiological features. In recent years, pancreatic lesions have been discovered more frequently as incidental findings due to the increased utilization and widespread availability of abdominal cross-sectional imaging. Therefore, it becomes imperative to establish an early and appropriate diagnosis with meticulous differentiation in an attempt to balance unnecessary treatment of benign pancreatic lesions and missing the opportunity for early intervention in malignant lesions. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) has become an important diagnostic modality for the identification and risk stratification of pancreatic lesions due to its ability to provide detailed imaging and acquisition of tissue samples for analysis with the help of fine-needle aspiration/biopsy. The recent development of EUS-based technology, including contrast-enhanced endoscopic ultrasound, real-time elastography–endoscopic ultrasound, miniature probe ultrasound, confocal laser endomicroscopy, and the application of artificial intelligence has significantly augmented the diagnostic accuracy of EUS as it enables better evaluation of the number, location, dimension, wall thickness, and contents of these lesions. The superior extensor ankle retinaculum (SEAR), a transversely fascial thickening positioned above the tibia–talar joint, serves as a crucial anatomical structure in ankle stability. The purpose of this study was to measure and compare by ultrasound (US) imaging the bilateral thickness and echogenicity of SEAR in football players with previous multiple ankle sprains (group 1) and healthy volunteers (group 2). A cross-sectional study was performed using ultrasound imaging to measure longitudinal and transversal axes using a new protocol in a sample of 50 subjects: 25 football players with previous multiple ankle sprains and 25 healthy subjects. The findings for SEAR thickness revealed statistically significant differences for both axes (p = 0.0011 and p = 0.0032) between the healthy side and the previously sprained side, and with the corresponding side of group 2 (p = 0.003 and p = 0.004). Moreover, in group 1, regarding the ROI echogenicity, a statistically significant difference was found between the sides (p = 0.0378). These findings suggest that the football players with previous ankle sprains showed a thicker and inhomogeneous SEAR on the sprain side, unveiling a remodeling of this structure compared to the other side and to the healthy volunteers. Peritoneal inclusion cysts (PICs) are a rare and benign condition of uncertain pathogenesis. The fluid-filled, mesothelial-lined cysts manifest within the abdominopelvic cavity. This case report details an unusual occurrence of a 97 mm PIC- presenting as an umbilical hernia- in a 26-year-old male patient with no prior surgical history. Following pre-operative cross-sectional imaging, this was managed through open excision without complication. A systematic review of the literature highlighted 30 previous cases [26F, 4M] with a mean age of 34 years (std ±15.4) and a median diameter of 93 mm [IQR, 109 mm]. A total of 53% (n = 16) of cases had a history of previous abdominal surgery. Surgical excision is safe and laparoscopic modality should be considered (<1% recurrence). Background Partial anomalous pulmonary venous return (PAPVR) can be surgically corrected using a pericardial baffle. This baffle can become obstructed post-surgery, leading to pulmonary hypertension and right heart dysfunction if not detected and corrected. Case summary We describe three patients with occluded PAPVR baffles who underwent drug-coated balloon angioplasty and stenting of the obstructed baffle. In each case, baffle obstruction was detected post-operatively on surveillance cross-sectional imaging, and an invasively measured pulmonary capillary wedge-to-left atrium gradient was noted to be elevated. Post-intervention, each patient had an improvement in baffle flow by angiography as well as lung perfusion as assessed by nuclear medicine scintigraphy. Discussion Given the subtle symptomatology of obstructed PAPVR pericardial baffle repairs, surveillance imaging is necessary to detect occluded baffles and intervene before downstream right heart disease and pulmonary hypertension develops. Given the high rates of re-stenosis in pulmonary vein stenting, pre-treatment of occluded PAPVR baffles with drug-coated balloons may help reduce re-intervention rates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Imaging-based assessment of sarcopenia is a well-validated prognostic tool for patients with chronic liver disease. However, little is known about its value in patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the predictive value of the cross-sectional imaging-based skeletal muscle index (SMI) for transplant-free survival (TFS) in patients with PSC. Methods: A total of 95 patients with PSC who underwent abdominal cross-sectional imaging between 2008 and 2022 were included in this retrospective study. SMI was measured at the third lumbar vertebra level (L3-SMI). The cut-off values to define sarcopenia were < 50 cm²/m² in male patients and < 39 cm²/m² in female patients. The primary outcome of this study was TFS, which was defined as survival without liver transplantation or death from any cause. Results: Our study indicates that L3-SMI sarcopenia impairs TFS in patients with PSC (5-year TFS: 33.9% vs. 83.3%, p = 0.001, log-rank test). L3-SMI sarcopenia was independently associated with reduced TFS via multivariate Cox regression analysis (HR = 2.749; p = 0.028). Body mass index reduction > 10% at 12 months, which is used as MELD standard exception (SE) criterion in Eurotransplant (in Germany only until September 2023), was not significantly associated with TFS in the multivariate Cox regression analysis (HR = 1.417; p = 0.330). Substitution of BMI reduction with L3-SMI in the German SE criteria improved the predictive accuracy of TFS compared to the established SE criteria (multivariable Cox regression analysis: HR = 4.007, p < 0.001 vs. HR = 1.691, p = 0.141). Conclusion: Imaging-based diagnosis of sarcopenia via L3-SMI is associated with a low TFS in patients with PSC and may provide additional benefits as a prognostic factor in patient selection for liver transplantation. Background: Computer Aided Lung Sound Analysis (CALSA) aims to overcome limitations associated with standard lung auscultation by removing the subjective component and allowing quantification of sound characteristics. In this proof-of-concept study, a novel automated approach was evaluated in real patient data by comparing lung sound characteristics to structural and functional imaging biomarkers. Methods: Patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) aged > 5y were recruited in a prospective cross-sectional study. CT scans were analyzed by the CF-CT scoring method and Functional Respiratory Imaging (FRI). A digital stethoscope was used to record lung sounds at six chest locations. Following sound characteristics were determined: expiration-to-inspiration (E/I) signal power ratios within different frequency ranges, number of crackles per respiratory phase and wheeze parameters. Linear mixed-effects models were computed to relate CALSA parameters to imaging biomarkers on a lobar level. Results: 222 recordings from 25 CF patients were included. Significant associations were found between E/I ratios and structural abnormalities, of which the ratio between 200 and 400 Hz appeared to be most clinically relevant due to its relation with bronchiectasis, mucus plugging, bronchial wall thickening and air trapping on CT. The number of crackles was also associated with multiple structural abnormalities as well as regional airway resistance determined by FRI. Wheeze parameters were not considered in the statistical analysis, since wheezing was detected in only one recording. Conclusions: The present study is the first to investigate associations between auscultatory findings and imaging biomarkers, which are considered the gold standard to evaluate the respiratory system. Despite the exploratory nature of this study, the results showed various meaningful associations that highlight the potential value of automated CALSA as a novel non-invasive outcome measure in future research and clinical practice. Background: The prevalence of non-HIV related Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) is increasing with use of immunosuppressive therapies. There are case reports of solid organ transplant recipients on immunosuppressive therapy presenting with mild hypercalcemia, leading to a diagnosis of PJP. Recent studies have shown efficacy of PJP prophylaxis for patients treated with rituximab with a favourable adverse effect profile. Case Presentation: A 78-year-old male with a history of PR3-ANCA vasculitis, chronic kidney disease and heart failure with reduced ejection fraction presented to our tertiary care hospital with a two-week history of confusion and non-productive cough. Background immunosuppression with rituximab was completed every six months. The patient was found to have hypercalcemia and new infiltrates and ground glass opacities on cross-sectional imaging. Bronchoscopy was performed that was positive for Pneumocystis jirovecii. He was treated with 21 days of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and prednisone with resolution of symptoms and hypercalcemia. Conclusions: Herein, we present a novel case of PJP in a non-transplant recipient preceded by hypercalcemia. Our case demonstrates the importance for a high suspicion for PJP in chronically immunosuppressed patients on rituximab presenting with PTH-independent hypercalcemia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the in-depth study of solid-state batteries (SSBs), various in situ and ex situ characterization technologies have been widely used to study them. The performance and reliability of SSBs are limited by the formation and evolution of lithium dendrites at the interfaces between solid electrodes and solid electrolytes. We propose a new method based on optical coherence tomography (OCT) for in situ characterization of the internal state of solid-state batteries. OCT is a low-loss, high-resolution, non-invasive imaging technique that can provide real-time monitoring of cross-sectional images of internal structures of SSBs. The morphology, growth, and evolution of lithium dendrites at different stages of cycling under various conditions can be visualized and quantified by OCT. Furthermore, we validate and correlate the OCT results with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and XPS, proving the accuracy and effectiveness of the OCT characterization method. We reveal the interfacial phenomena and challenges in SSBs and demonstrate the feasibility and advantages of OCT as a powerful tool for in situ and operando imaging of battery interfaces. This study provides new insights into the mechanisms and factors that affect SSB performance, safety, and lifetime, and suggests possible solutions for improvement and application in the field of applied energy. Summary: Background: Stricturing Crohn's disease (CD) occurs most commonly in the terminal ileum and poses a clinical problem. Cross‐sectional imaging modalities such as intestinal ultrasound (IUS), computed tomography enterography (CTE), and magnetic resonance enterography (MRE) allow for assessment of the entire bowel wall and associated peri‐enteric findings. Radiologic definitions of strictures have been developed for CTE and MRE; their reliability and responsiveness are being evaluated in index development programs. A comprehensive assessment strategy for strictures using IUS is needed. Aims: To provide a detailed summary of definitions, diagnosis and monitoring of strictures on IUS as well as technical aspects of image acquisition. Methods: We searched four databases up to 6 January 2024. Two‐stage screening was done in duplicate. We assessed risk of bias using QUADAS‐2. Results: There were 56 studies eligible for inclusion. Definitions for strictures on IUS are heterogeneous, but the overall accuracy for diagnosis of strictures is high. The capability of IUS for characterising inflammation versus fibrosis in strictures is not accurate enough to be used in clinical practice or trials. We summarise definitions for improvement of strictures on IUS, and discuss parameters for image acquisition and standardisation. In the quality inspection process of high-voltage cables, several commonly used indicators include cable length, insulation thickness, and the number of conductors within the core. Among these factors, the count of conductors holds particular significance as a key determinant of cable quality. Machine vision technology has found extensive application in automatically detecting the number of conductors in cross-sectional images of high-voltage cables. However, the presence of scratch-type defects in cut high-voltage cable cross-sections can significantly compromise the precision of conductor count detection. To address this problem, this paper introduces a novel improved total variation (TV) algorithm, marking the first-ever application of the TV algorithm in this domain. Considering the staircase effect, the direct use of the TV algorithm is prone to cause serious loss of image edge information. The proposed algorithm firstly introduces multimodal features to effectively mitigate the staircase effect. While eliminating scratch-type defects, the algorithm endeavors to preserve the original image's edge information, consequently yielding a noteworthy enhancement in detection accuracy. Furthermore, a dataset was curated, comprising images of cross-sections of high-voltage cables of varying sizes, each displaying an assortment of scratch-type defects. Experimental findings conclusively demonstrate the algorithm's exceptional efficiency in eradicating diverse scratch-type defects within high-voltage cable cross-sections. The average scratch elimination rate surpasses 90%, with an impressive 96.15% achieved on cable sample 4. A series of conducted ablation experiments in this paper substantiate a significant enhancement in cable image quality. Notably, the Edge Preservation Index (EPI) exhibits an improvement of approximately 20%, resulting in a substantial boost to conductor count detection accuracy, thus effectively enhancing the quality of high-voltage cable production. Background: It is still a challenging problem for clinicians to explore the nature of the indeterminate biliary strictures (IBSs). Approximately 20% of biliary strictures remain undetermined after a thorough preoperative assessment. Case presentation: Here, we present two cases of indeterminate biliary strictures patients, whose cross-sectional imaging and endoscopic examination were nondiagnostic. The patients underwent exploratory laparotomy finally and were confirmed as malignancy. We also reviewed the recent reports in literatures regarding the evaluation of IBSs. Conclusions: Given the majority of the biliary strictures are malignancy, preoperative differentiation between benign and malignant is critical for choosing the best therapeutic regimen. Thus, close follow-up, multiple multidisciplinary discussion, and prompt surgical exploration are necessary for some difficult diagnostic cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Intestinal ultrasound is a non-invasive, safe, and cost-effective technique to study the small and large intestines. In addition to conventional B-mode and color doppler imaging, new US tools have been developed in more recent years that provide auxiliary data on many GI conditions, improving the diagnosis and assessment of relevant outcomes. We have reviewed the more recent literature (from 2010 onwards) on auxiliary tools in bowel ultrasound such as elastography techniques, CEUS, SICUS, and the potential contribution by artificial intelligence (AI) to overcome current intestinal ultrasound limitations. For this scoping review, we performed an extensive literature search on PubMed and EMBASE to identify studies published until December 2023 and investigating the application of elastography techniques, CEUS, SICUS, and AI in the ultrasonographic assessment of the small and large intestines. Multiparametric intestinal ultrasound shows promising capabilities in Crohn's disease, while less is known about the role in ulcerative colitis. Despite some evidence, the CEUS role as a point-of-care examination tool for rare conditions such as intestinal GvHD and ischemic small bowel disease seems promising, possibly avoiding the need to perform further cross-sectional imaging. Objective: To investigate the prevalence of carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms and assessed the median nerve cross-sectional area measurement by ultrasound in pregnant women in the second and third trimester with hypertensive disorders. Methods: This study presented four groups that were included in the cross-sectional study: one group of healthy pregnant women (control group) and three groups of pregnant women with hypertensive disorders (gestational hypertension, chronic hypertension, and preeclampsia). Results: Carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms such as hand numbness and hand pain were significantly higher in the hypertensive group than in the control group (p=.013, p= .002, respectively). We found that the right and left median nerves’ cross-sectional area was significantly higher in the hypertensive group than in the control group (p<.001). Also, participants had a positive low correlation and statistically significant difference between body mass index, gestational weight gain, and median nerve cross-sectional area (r= .347, p<.001; r=.414, p<.001). We showed excellent reliability for intraclass correlation coefficients of right and left median nerve cross-sectional area measurements (Intra observer Intraclass correlation coefficients= 0.926 and 0.955, respectively). Conclusion: Obstetricians should be aware of the increased prevalence of carpal tunnel syndrome in pregnant women with hypertensive disorders and increased carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms in the second and third trimesters. Because of its convenience and low cost, ultrasonography may be preferred for diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms in pregnant women. This study presents a new gas metal arc welding (GMAW) technique that achieves both high efficiency and low heat input using a hybridization of the hot-wire method. The optimal combination of welding speed and welding current conditions was investigated using a fixed hot-wire feeding speed of 10 m/min on a butt joint with a V-shaped groove using 19 mm thick steel plates. Molten pool stability and defect formation were observed using high-speed imaging and cross-sectional observations. The power consumption and heat input were predicted prior to welding and measured in the experiments. The results indicate that a combination of a welding current of 350–500 A and welding speed of 0.3–0.7 m/min is optimal to avoid defect formation and molten metal precedence using three or four passes. The higher efficiency and lower heat input achieved by hot-wire GMAW results in a weld metal of adequate hardness, narrower heat-affected zone, smaller grain size at the fusion boundary, and lower power consumption than those obtained using tandem GMAW and high-current GMAW. Based on the experimental results, a single bevel groove, which is widely used in construction machinery welding joints, was welded using hot-wire GMAW, and we confirmed that the welding part could be welded in six passes, whereas eight passes were required with GMAW only. The mechanical performance of a printed object in 3D concrete printing is influenced by the interfacial bonding strength between the deposited filaments. Hence, the physical properties of the layer interface and the influential factors have been studied. This study aims to clarify the mechanism of aggregate distribution heterogeneity as well as the influence of printing material extrusion speed on the heterogeneity inside the filament. A laboratory-scale material extruder is developed and used in this study. The aggregate distribution is evaluated in a quantitative manner with the cross-sectional image obtained by X-ray computed tomography. The images were taken in the deposited filament and the material extrusion nozzle for printing. Results show that large aggregate moves from the outside of the printing nozzle toward the center with increasing extrusion speed from 1.8 to 7.1 mm/s. As extrusion speed increases, it is inferred that a lubrication layer forms on the inner surface of the nozzle, causing the transition of material extrusion behavior from laminate flow to plug flow. Thus, the aggregate distribution appears differently inside the filament. This finding indicates that the magnitude of friction against the nozzle wall alters the die swell during discharge as well as the aggregate distribution before and after extrusion. This study protocol for a prospective, multicenter, diagnostic, clinical trial describes the integration of transoral and transcervical ultrasonography (US) in the initial clinical work-up of patients referred to tertiary head and neck cancer centers with suspected oropharyngeal cancer. The study evaluates the blinded detection rate of oropharyngeal tumors and their US-estimated size and T-stage before histopathology and cross-sectional imaging are available. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans will be prospectively rated while blinded to T-site histopathology and US. The primary outcome measures of diagnostic accuracy, including sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and overall accuracy, will be reported for both US and MRI. A sub-analysis of prospectively rated 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computerized tomography (PET/CT) scans in patients with clinically suspected unknown primary tumors will also be compared to US and MRI. Secondary outcome measures, including a comparison of tumor size estimation between US, MRI, and CT, will also be reported. This prospective multicenter study will provide clinically impactful information regarding the use of transoral and transcervical US for the diagnostic work-up of oropharyngeal cancer. The 28-days-to-diagnosis pathway is the current expected standard of care for women with symptoms of ovarian cancer in the UK. However, the anticipated conversion rate of symptoms to cancer is only 3%, and use of the pathway is increasing. A rapid triage at the moment of receipt of the referral might allow resources to be allocated more appropriately. In secondary care, multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) use the risk of malignancy index (RMI) score, (multiply menopausal status pre = 1 or post = 3 × ultrasound score = 0 − 3 × the CA 125 level), using a score of >200, to triage urgency and management in possible ovarian cancer cases. The most powerful determinant of the RMI score variables is CA 125 level, an objective number. Could a simple modification of the RMI score retain a high sensitivity for cancer whilst improving specificity and, consequently, decrease the morbidity of false-positive classification? To test this hypothesis, a retrospective evaluation of an ovarian two-week-wait telephone clinic of one consultant gynaecological oncologist was undertaken. Enquiry re menopause status was scored as one for pre- and three for postmenopausal or uncertain. CA 125 levels of >67 u/mL for premenopausal and >23 u/mL for postmenopausal women were used to precipitate urgent cross-sectional imaging requests and MDT opinions. These CA 125 cut thresholds were calculated using an assumption that the RMI imaging score, regardless of whether the result was available, could be three. We contemplate that women who did not exceed a provisional RMI score of >200 might be informed they are extremely unlikely to have cancer, removed from the malignancy tracker and appropriate follow-up arranged. One hundred and forty consecutive cases were analysed; 43% were deemed premenopausal and 57% postmenopausal. Twenty of the women had cancer, eighteen (90%) of whom had an RMI > 200. One hundred and twenty were benign, and only twenty-three (19%) classified as urgent cases in need of accelerated referral to imaging. In contrast, CA 125 > 35 u/mL, whilst retaining the sensitivity of 90%, misclassified 36 (30%) of the benign cases. It is possible that a telephone triage via a questionnaire determining menopausal status and the CA 125 result could offer a sensitivity for cancer of 90% and urgent expert review of under 20% of benign cases. This rapid initial telephone assessment could be presented by a trained pathway navigator, physician associate or nurse specialist. Introduction. Kidney cancer is the eleventh most common malignancy in the United States of Mexico. Carcinoma renal cell (CRC) is considered the most frequent type and represents 2-3% of all cancers worldwide. In the setting of metastatic disease, a primary renal tumor is usually identified, and metastases are located in the lung, bone, liver, brain, and rarely in soft tissue. Patients with soft tissue metastases do not have symptoms in the initial stages and are generally found only when the lesions increase in size or during the study of the surgical resection piece. Clinical case. In this case, we report a female patient in the seventh decade of life with a soft tissue metastasis located in the sacral region, 10 years after a nephrectomy secondary to CRC. Results. Clinical and radiological findings of a well-defined tumor. Surgical resection of the lesion is performed under regional anesthesia with complete excision. Conclusions. It is recommended that patients with a resectable and solitary metastatic site be candidates for surgical resection with free margins, as was the case with our patient due to its easy access and single lesion. In CRC, in addition to its initial surgical treatment, close surveillance with physical examination and cross-sectional images is essential to monitor the presence of metastases and thus avoid late treatments.
