- Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Currently, human papillomavirus (HPV) positivity represents a strong prognostic factor for both reduced risk of relapse and improved survival in patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC). However, a subset of HPV-positive OPSCC patients still experience poor outcomes. Furthermore, HPV-negative OPSCC patients, who have an even higher risk of relapse, are still lacking suitable prognostic biomarkers for clinical outcome. Here, we evaluated the prognostic value of LINE-1 methylation level in OPSCC patients and further addressed the relationship between LINE-1 methylation status and p53 protein expression as well as genome-wide/gene-specific DNA methylation. RESULTS: In this study, DNA was extracted from 163 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue samples retrospectively collected from stage III-IVB OPSCC patients managed with curative intent with up-front treatment. Quantitative methylation-specific PCR revealed that LINE-1 hypomethylation was directly associated with poor prognosis (5-year overall survival-OS: 28.1% for LINE-1 methylation < 35% vs. 69.1% for ≥ 55%; p < 0.0001). When LINE-1 methylation was dichotomized as < 55% versus ≥ 55%, interaction with HPV16 emerged: compared with hypermethylated HPV16-positive patients, subjects with hypomethylated HPV16-negative OPSCC reported an adjusted higher risk of death (HR 4.83, 95% CI 2.24-10.38) and progression (HR 4.54, 95% CI 2.18-9.48). Tumor protein p53 (TP53) gene is often mutated and overexpressed in HPV-negative OPSCC. Since p53 has been reported to repress LINE-1 promoter, we then analyzed the association between p53 protein expression and LINE-1 methylation levels. Following p53 immunohistochemistry, results indicated that among HPV16-negative patients with p53 ≥ 50%, LINE-1 methylation levels declined and remained stable at approximately 43%; any HPV16-positive patient reported p53 ≥ 50%. Paleo-thermometers in sedimentary basins often drive to misleading thermal modelling when applied alone or only on potentially productive Paleozoic source rocks. Different paleo-thermal and thermo-chronological data have been used as constraints to model the Silurian to Cenozoic succession of a recently drilled well in the onshore portion of the Baltic Basin, in northern Poland. This dataset provides an integrated platform for thermal maturity assessment contributing to the highly debated reconstruction of the thermal history of the Baltic Basin in the last decade. The well stratigraphy consists of a Lower Paleozoic marine clayey and arenaceous/calcareous succession, about 1000 m thick that is unconformably overlain by a 2000 m thick Permian to Cenozoic sequence, developed in a continental to shallow marine environment. Optical microscopy, FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy analysis of organic matter have been coupled with (U–Th)/He data to produce a robust vitrinite reflectance profile and constrain the 1D thermal modelling of the well. In addition, such a thermal maturity profile was validated by an independent thermal modelling calibrated by the smectite illitization kinetics. Both models identify high heat flow conditions (up to 1.7 HFU) at the end of Mesozoic. The Lower Paleozoic succession entered the late oil window of HC generation during this last heating event.

Objectives Obesity in Europe, and worldwide, has been an increasing epidemic during the past decades. Moreover, obesity has important implications regarding technical issues and the risks associated with surgical interventions. Nevertheless, there is a lack of evidence assessing the influence of obesity on video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) lobectomy results. Our study aimed to assess the impact of morbid obesity on perioperative clinical and oncological outcomes after VATS lobectomy using a prospectively maintained nationwide registry. Methods The Italian VATS lobectomy Registry was used to collect all consecutive cases from 55 Institutions. Explored outcome parameters were conversion to thoracotomy rates, complication rates, intra-operative blood loss, surgical time, hospital postoperative length of stay, chest tube duration, number of harvested lymph-node, and surgical margin positivity. Results From 2016 to 2019, a total of 4412 patients were collected. 74 patients present morbid obesity (1.7%). Multivariable-adjusted analysis showed that morbid obesity was associated with a higher rate of complications (32.8% vs 20.3%), but it was not associated with a higher rate of conversion, and surgical margin positivity rates. Moreover, morbid obesity patients benefit from an equivalent surgical time, lymph-node retrieval, intraoperative blood loss, hospital postoperative length of stay, and chest tube duration than non-morbid obese patients. The most frequent postoperative complications in morbidly obese patients were pulmonary-related (35%). Conclusion Our results showed that VATS lobectomy could be safely and satisfactorily conducted even in morbidly obese patients, without an increase in conversion rate, blood loss, surgical time, hospital postoperative length of stay, and chest tube duration. Moreover, short-term oncological outcomes were preserved.

Dagli elementi dati e riconosciuti, l’obiettivo è creare una nuova composizione formale contenuta all’interno della corte, cuore della comunità che abita l’edificio. Il posizionamento nel centro della monumentale piazza delle Duecento Colonne riporta lo spazio nella vita quotidiana degli abitanti: il memoriale non è oggetto di contemplazione, ma elemento spaziale accessibile, vivo e malleabile, in cui i fruitori lasciano il loro segno con la continua riappropriazione dello spazio. Il progetto è un anti-monumento, ribaltando il rapporto oggetto/osservatore attraverso una lettura archeologica dell’architettura.

As a rapidly expanding family of 2D materials, MXenes have recently gained considerable attention. Herein, by developing a coating method that enables transfer‐free and layer‐by‐layer film coating, the nonlinear optical absorption (NOA) of Ti3C2Tx MXene films is investigated. Using the Z‐scan technique, the NOA of the MXene films is characterized at ≈800 nm. The results show that there is a strong and layer‐dependent NOA behavior, transitioning from reverse saturable absorption (RSA) to saturable absorption (SA) as the layer number increases from 5 to 30. Notably, the nonlinear absorption coefficient β changes significantly from ≈7.13 × 102 cm GW−1 to ≈−2.69 × 102 cm GW−1 within this range. The power‐dependent NOA of the MXene films is also characterized, and a decreasing trend in β is observed for increasing laser intensity. Finally, the NOA of 2D MXene films at ≈1550 nm is characterized by integrating them onto silicon nitride waveguides, where an SA behavior is observed for the films including 5 and 10 layers of MXene, in contrast to the RSA observed at ≈800 nm. These results reveal intriguing nonlinear optical properties of 2D MXene films, highlighting their versatility and potential for implementing high‐performance nonlinear photonic devices.

Lo scopo del lavoro è quello di mettere in evidenza alcuni aspetti delle “rivoluzioni colorate” suscettibili di rafforzare la tendenza della Russia ad attribuire alle potenze occidentali intenzioni ostili nei suoi confronti, in particolare l’attivismo in Georgia e Ucraina di ONG occidentali già coinvolte nel political warfare condotto dagli Stati Uniti in Polonia negli anni di Reagan (sostegno a Solidarnošc) e ancora in Serbia nel dopo-Guerra fredda (aiuti alle opposizioni attive nel rovesciamento di Slobodan Miloševic nel 2000). L’articolo mostra come le locuzioni “rivoluzione colorata” e “guerra ibrida” siano diventate sinonimi nel recente discorso strategico russo, e come il political warfare statunitense in Polonia e il rovesciamento di Miloševic in Serbia vengano considerati dai russi come dei precedenti delle “rivoluzioni colorate”.

9. Integrated optical parametric amplifiers in silicon nitride waveguides incorporated with 2D graphene oxide films

Optical parametric amplification (OPA) represents a powerful solution to achieve broadband amplification in wavelength ranges beyond the scope of conventional gain media, for generating high-power optical pulses, optical microcombs, entangled photon pairs and a wide range of other applications. Here, we demonstrate optical parametric amplifiers based on silicon nitride (Si3N4) waveguides integrated with two-dimensional (2D) layered graphene oxide (GO) films. We achieve precise control over the thickness, length, and position of the GO films using a transfer-free, layer-by-layer coating method combined with accurate window opening in the chip cladding using photolithography. Detailed OPA measurements with a pulsed pump for the fabricated devices with different GO film thicknesses and lengths show a maximum parametric gain of ~24.0 dB, representing a ~12.2 dB improvement relative to the device without GO. We perform a theoretical analysis of the device performance, achieving good agreement with experiment and showing that there is substantial room for further improvement. This work represents the first demonstration of integrating 2D materials on chips to enhance the OPA performance, providing a new way of achieving high performance photonic integrated OPA by incorporating 2D materials.

10. Tectonic burial and 'young' (<10 Ma) exhumation in the southern Apennines fold-and-thrust belt (Italy)

In the southern Apennines fold-and-thrust belt, thermal indicators record exhumation of sedimentary units from depths locally in excess of 5 km. The thrust belt is made of allochthonous sedimentary units that overlie a 6-8-km-thick, carbonate footwall succession. The latter, continuous with the foreland Apulian Platform, is deformed by reverse faults involving the underlying basement. Therefore, a switch from thin-skinned to thick-skinned thrusting occurred as the Apulian Platform carbonates--and the underlying thick continental lithosphere--were deformed during the latest shortening stages. Apatite fission track data, showing cooling ages ranging between 9.2 [+ or -] 1.0 and 1.5 [+ or -] 0.8 Ma, indicate that exhumation marks these late tectonic stages, probably initiating with the buttressing of the allochthonous wedge against the western margin of the Apulian Platform. Pliocene-Pleistocene foreland advancing of the allochthonous units exceeds the total amount of slip that, based on cross-section balancing and restoration, could be transferred to the base of the allochthon from the underlying thick-skinned structures. This suggests that emplacement of the allochthon above the western portion of the Apulian Platform carbonates was followed by gravitational readjustments within the allochthonous wedge, coeval--and partly associated with--thick-skinned shortening at depth. The related denudation processes are interpreted to have played a primary role in tectonic exhumation. Biopolymers obtained from renewable resources are an interesting alternative to conventional polymers obtained from fossil resources, as they are sustainable and environmentally friendly. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a biodegradable aliphatic polyester produced from 100% renewable plant resources and plays a key role in the biopolymer market, and is experiencing ever-increasing use worldwide. Unfortunately, this biopolymer has some usage limitations when compared with traditional polymers; therefore, blending it with other biopolymers, such as poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), poly(butylene succinate-co-butylene adipate) (PBSA), poly(butylene adipate-co-butylene terephthalate) (PBAT) and different poly(hydroxyalkanoates) (PHA), is considered an interesting method to improve it significantly, customize its properties and extend the range of its applications. The following review highlights, in its first part, the physico-chemical and mechanical properties of PLA in comparison to the other biopolymers listed above, highlighting the various drawbacks of PLA. The second part of the review deals with recent developments, results, and perspectives in the field of PLA-based blends.

The Sicilian Fold and Thrust belt (SFTB) is a structurally complex area where along-strike variations of structural styles, shortening amounts, exhumation rates and amounts of syn-tectonic sedimentation frequently occur. Moreover strong differential clockwise rotations around vertical axes affected the different tectonic units during their emplacement. This complexity, coupled with debatable or incomplete subsurface dataset (e.g., available 2D onshore seismic lines) allowed previous authors to propose different interpretations for the tectonic evolution of the SFTB since Cenozoic time. The study area, located in the Western sector of the SFTB comprises the Kumeta and Busambra ridges (derived from the deformation of Mesozoic and Cenozoic shallow water and pelagic carbonate deposits, named Trapanese unit), represents a paradigm of such a structural complexity. The two main structural interpretations available for this area consider the Kumeta and Busambra ridges either as: I) flower structures due to strike-slip tectonics or II) thrust sheets deeply buried by the overthrusting of Mesozoic-Cenozoic deep-water carbonate thin-skinned thrust sheets (named Imerese and Sicanian units), subsequently exhumed by more deeply seated thrusts or transpressive faults. The 3D structural model was reconstructed based on both seismic interpretation and field data. The horizons interpreted are: the top of Cretaceous carbonates and top of Miocene marl deposits of the Trapanese unit, which represent the “autochthonous” unit, and the top of Mesozoic-Cenozoic deep-water carbonates (Sicano, Imerese units) and Oligocene-Miocene foredeep deposits (named Numidian Flysch unit) which represent the allochthonous unit. A detailed structural model was reconstructed only for the autochthonous unit. Along strike variation of structural style was recognized. The main structures reconstructed are: WNW-ESE thrusts in the western sector of the study area; WNW-ESE backthrusts in the eastern sector; NNE-SSW tear faults in the northern sector; WNW-ESE to E-W high angle reverse to transpressive faults along the Kumeta and Busambra ridges. The transpressive movement along high angle faults probably reactivates pre-existing normal faults of the original passive margin. Paleo-thermal data (vitrinite reflectance, Tmax, illite content in mixed layers illite-smectite) and thermal modelling indicate levels of thermal maturity higher in the Imerese unit than the Trapanese unit. Low burial amounts (0.8 - 1.2 km) occurred on top of the outcropping Trapanese unit. Conversely, the structural low between the Kumeta and Busambra structural highs hosted at least 2 km of sedimentary rocks whose origin could be either tectonic, gravitational or sedimentary. On the basis of geometric and thermal reconstructions and differential rotations of blocks, we suggest the following kinematic evolution for the study area: I) internal thrusting of the Imerese unit (located in a more internal position) during Serravallian times; II) overthrusting of Imerese unit/Numidian flysch above the Trapanese unit during Tortonian times; III) deformation of the Trapanese unit (since the end of Tortonian) with complex deformation, strongly influenced by inherited paleogeography.

Ultrasound (US) is the primary tool for evaluating patients with thyroid nodules, and the risk of malignancy assessed is based on US features. These features help determine which patients require fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy. Classification systems for US features have been developed to facilitate efficient interpretation, reporting, and communication of thyroid US findings. These systems have been validated by numerous studies and are reviewed in this article. Cities all over the world have developed on different geological-geomorphological substrates. Different kinds of human activities have operated for millennia as geomorphic agents, generating numerous and various erosion landforms and huge anthropogenic deposits. Considering the increasing demand for land and the expansion of the built-up areas involving and disturbing any kind of natural system inside and surrounding the actual urban areas, it is not negligible how important the dynamics of the urban environment and its physical evolution are. In this context, this manuscript addresses insights into eight case studies of urban geomorphological analyses of cities in Italy, Greece, and Brazil. The studies are based on surveying and mapping geomorphological processes and landforms in urban areas, supporting both geo-hazard assessment, historical evolution, and paleomorphologies, as well as disseminating knowledge of urban geoheritage and educating about the anthropogenic impact on urban sustainability. We hypothesize that urban geomorphological analysis of several case studies addresses the physical environment of modern cities in a multi-temporal, multidisciplinary, and critical way concerning global changes. Thus, this study aims to illustrate and propose a novel approach to urban geomorphological investigation as a model for the understanding and planning of the physical urban environment on a European and global scale.

n light of the considerable pressure exerted by food production on the environment, the assessment of the environmental burdens of dietary choices has recently gained interest among the scientific community. Several studies based on life cycle thinking approach agreed that a transition from an omnivorous to either a vegan or vegetarian diets would reduce the environmental impact associated with food consumption. The majority of the studies set the system boundaries up to the retail, excluding the consumption phase and generally do not account for uncertainties. The aim of the present study was to assess how personal consumption choices and behaviour can affect the greenhouse gas emissions generated by three balanced dietary patterns (omnivorous, vegetarian and vegan), defined on the basis of nutritional recommendations for an average Italian man. It took into consideration the uncertainties associated with three elements, namely the greenhouse gas emissions due to the production of the food items, the emissions associated with cooking and the food wasted by consumers. The results of the study highlighted that, despite the higher share of greenhouse gas emissions of the supply chain stages prior to consumption (66%–74% of the total emissions), domestic behaviours have an important influence of the total greenhouse gas emissions of the diet, which can offset the lower GHG emissions due to the choice of vegetable-origin foods. In fact, 15%–21% of the total emissions are associated to the cooking phase and 11%–13% to the food waste generation. Therefore, this study remarks the importance of adopting a cradle to grave perspective when assessing the environmental burden of dietary patterns and emphasises the central role of consumers in the definition of low GHG-emitting dietary patterns.

Atypical deployment of social gaze is present early on in toddlers with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Yet, studies characterizing the developmental dynamic behind it are scarce. Here, we used a data-driven method to delineate the developmental change in visual exploration of social interaction over childhood years in autism. Longitudinal eye-tracking data were acquired as children with ASD and their typically developing (TD) peers freely explored a short cartoon movie. We found divergent moment-to-moment gaze patterns in children with ASD compared to their TD peers. This divergence was particularly evident in sequences that displayed social interactions between characters and even more so in children with lower developmental and functional levels. The basic visual properties of the animated scene did not account for the enhanced divergence. Over childhood years, these differences dramatically increased to become more idiosyncratic. These findings suggest that social attention should be targeted early in clinical treatments.

The WWOX gene encodes a 414-amino-acid protein composed of two N-terminal WW domains and a C-terminal short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase (SDR) domain. WWOX protein is highly conserved among species and mainly expressed in the cerebellum, cerebral cortex, brain stem, thyroid, hypophysis, and reproductive organs. It plays a crucial role in the biology of the central nervous system, and it is involved in neuronal development, migration, and proliferation. Biallelic pathogenic variants in WWOX have been associated with an early infantile epileptic encephalopathy known as WOREE syndrome. Both missense and null variants have been described in affected patients, leading to a reduction in protein function and stability. The most severe WOREE phenotypes have been related to biallelic null/null variants, associated with the complete loss of function of the protein. All affected patients showed brain anomalies on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), suggesting the pivotal role of WWOX protein in brain homeostasis and developmental processes. We provided a literature review, exploring both the clinical and radiological spectrum related to WWOX pathogenic variants, described to date. We focused on neuroradiological findings to better delineate the WOREE phenotype with diagnostic and prognostic implications.

Abstract The amygdala is a key region in emotional regulation, which is often impaired in psychosis. However, it is unclear if amygdala dysfunction directly contributes to psychosis, or whether it contributes to psychosis through symptoms of emotional dysregulation. We studied the functional connectivity of amygdala subdivisions in patients with 22q11.2DS, a known genetic model for psychosis susceptibility. We investigated how dysmaturation of each subdivision’s connectivity contributes to positive psychotic symptoms and impaired tolerance to stress in deletion carriers. Longitudinally-repeated MRI scans from 105 patients with 22q11.2DS (64 at high-risk for psychosis and 37 with impaired tolerance to stress) and 120 healthy controls between the ages of 5 to 30 years were included. We calculated seed-based whole-brain functional connectivity for amygdalar subdivisions and employed a longitudinal multivariate approach to evaluate the developmental trajectory of functional connectivity across groups. Patients with 22q11.2DS presented a multivariate pattern of decreased basolateral amygdala (BLA)-frontal connectivity alongside increased BLA-hippocampal connectivity. Moreover, associations between developmental drops in centro-medial amygdala (CMA)-frontal connectivity to both impaired tolerance to stress and positive psychotic symptoms in deletion carriers were detected. Superficial amygdala hyperconnectivity to the striatum was revealed as a specific pattern arising in patients who develop mild to moderate positive psychotic symptoms. Overall, CMA-frontal dysconnectivity was found as a mutual neurobiological substrate in both impaired tolerance to stress and psychosis, suggesting a role in prodromal dysregulation of emotions in psychosis. While BLA dysconnectivity was found to be an early finding in patients with 22q11.2DS, which contributes to impaired tolerance to stress.

In this study, the chemical and isotopic composition of thermo-mineral springs from the Rosario de la Frontera hydrothermal system was used to construct a conceptual model describing the source regions the thermal fluids and the chemical-physical processes controlling the chemistry of waters and dissolved gases during their underground circulation. The main hydrothermal reservoir, hosted within the Cretaceous Pirgua Subgroup deposits, is fed by meteoric water and shows a Na-HCO3 composition produced by water-rock interactions involving sedimentary formations mostly consisting of conglomerates and sandstones, which are interbedded with alkaline volcanic rocks and shales and limestone deposits. This aquifer also receives significant contributions of crustal CO2 and He from mantle degassing, the latter being likely favored by the regional tectonic assessment that is characterized by a deep detachment (at about 10km depth) in the basement of the Santa Bárbara thick-skinned thrust system and a thinned lithosphere. The uprising thermal fluids mix with a relatively high salinity Na-Cl dominated aquifer produced by the interaction of meteoric water with the Tertiary Anta Formation evaporite. The temperatures of the hydrothermal reservoir, estimated with water geothermometers, are up to 130°C, which are consistent with the thickness of the hydrothermal circuit (2700-3000m) and the relatively high local geothermal gradient (~40°C/km). These results suggest that the heat stored in the fluid phase of RFHS is up to ~1×1018J, a value significantly higher (20%) than that previously estimated assuming an average reservoir temperature of 90°C. Abstract The recent SARS‐CoV‐2 pandemic has highlighted the urgent need for novel point‐of‐care devices to be promptly used for a rapid and reliable large screening analysis of several biomarkers like genetic sequences and antibodies. Currently, one of the main limitations of rapid tests is the high percentage of false negatives in the presence of variants and, in particular for the Omicron one. We demonstrate in this work the detection of SARS‐CoV‐2 and the Omicron variant with a cost‐effective silicon nanosensor enabling high sensitivity, selectivity, and fast response. We have shown that a silicon (Si) nanowires (NW) platform detects both Sars‐CoV‐2 and its Omicron variant with a limit of detection (LoD) of four effective copies (cps), without any amplification of the genome, and with high selectivity. This ultrasensitive detection of 4 cps allows to obtain an extremely early diagnosis paving the way for efficient and widespread tracking. The sensor is made with industrially compatible techniques, which in perspective may allow easy and cost‐effective industrialization.

Summary: CDC7 kinase is crucial for DNA replication initiation and fork processing. CDC7 inhibition mildly activates the ATR pathway, which further limits origin firing; however, to date the relationship between CDC7 and ATR remains controversial. We show that CDC7 and ATR inhibitors are either synergistic or antagonistic depending on the degree of inhibition of each individual kinase. We find that Polypyrimidine Tract Binding Protein 1 (PTBP1) is important for ATR activity in response to CDC7 inhibition and genotoxic agents. Compromised PTBP1 expression makes cells defective in RPA recruitment, genomically unstable, and resistant to CDC7 inhibitors. PTBP1 deficiency affects the expression and splicing of many genes indicating a multifactorial impact on drug response. We find that an exon skipping event in RAD51AP1 contributes to checkpoint deficiency in PTBP1-deficient cells. These results identify PTBP1 as a key factor in replication stress response and define how ATR activity modulates the activity of CDC7 inhibitors.

Hyperthermic intrathoracic chemotherapy (HITHOC) adjunct to surgery for Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma (MPM) has no definite role. The primary objective of this pilot-trial was to evaluate the feasibility for future large studies. The study design was a prospective randomized three-centric pilot trial. We recruited patients diagnosed with MPM and prospectively assigned them to two groups: Group A: Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) talc pleurodesis or Group B: Video-assisted P/D plus HITHOC. From November-2011 to July-2017 24 males and 3 females, with a median age of 68-years were enrolled (recruitment rate 5 patients/year). Preoperative stage was I-II, and 18 had epithelioid type. 14 patients were in the Group A. Operative mortality was 0. Follow-up ranged 6–80 months. The median overall survival time started to diverge at 20 months, being 19 months (95% CI 12–25) in Group A and 28 months (95% CI 0–56) in Group B. Survival rate for the epithelioid type was 15 months (95% CI 0–34) in Group A and 45 months (95% CI 0–107) in the Group B. These findings suggest that video-assisted P/D plus HITHOC may improve survival time in MPM patients undergoing surgical treatment and support the need for a larger multicenter randomized clinical trial.

La ricostruzione della storia termica delle unità deformate per pieghe e sovrascorrimenti rappresenta un elemento cruciale per definire l’evoluzione spazio-temporale e la distribuzione dei carichi tettonici in un orogene ove i processi di esumazione hanno interessato livelli crostali superficiali. In questo studio, l’uso congiunto di differenti tipi di indicatori termici nel campo della diagenesi ha permesso una ricostruzione opportunamente vincolata della maturità termica della porzione assiale dell’Appennino meridionale. Tra principali risultati ricordiamo: (i) la documentazione di un salto di maturità termica dall’unità tettonica derivata dalla deformazione della Piattaforma appenninica (dallo stadio di immaturità allo stadio di maturità incipiente di generazione degli idrocarburi) alle unità tettoniche derivate dalla deformazione del Bacino lagonegrese (stadio tardo diagenetico); (ii) la documentazione di deboli variazioni di maturità termica e quindi di massime temperature raggiunte nel passato lungo l’asse della catena nelle unità lagonegresi. Questo può essere messo in relazione alle variazioni di carichi di origine tettonica legate alla variabilità laterale dello spessore delle unità sovrascorse; (iii) il riconoscimento di differenti età di esumazione che caratterizzano il settore meridionale rispetto a quello settentrionale dell’area indagata. Nel settore meridionale l’esumazione è più giovane e post-data la messa in posto delle unità alloctone sui carbonati della Piattaforma apula (qui nella stadio maturo in termini di generazione degli idrocarburi) affioranti a Monte Alpi. Quest’ultimo è da considerare come un settore di esumazione intensa, localizzata all’interno della catena. Nel settore settentrionale, l’esumazione è più antica, per cui si è avuta un’evoluzione tettonica indipendente delle unità alloctone, prima della loro messa in posto nella loro attuale posizione al di sopra dei carbonati della Piattaforma apula. The reconstruction of the thermal history of folded and thrust units is crucial to define the pattern of tectonic loading and the time-space evolution of an orogen where tectonic exhumation processes occurred at shallow crustal levels. In the present study, the combined use of different thermal indicators in diagenesis allowed the reconstruction of the thermal maturity in the axial zone of the southern Apennines. Our major results include: (i) the documentation of a break in thermal maturity from the Apenninic Platform derived tectonic unit (from immature to early mature stages of hydrocarbon generation) to the Lagonegro Basin derived tectonic units (late diagenetic stage). This jump may be attributed to different amounts of tectonic loading that were emplaced on top of the different stratigraphic-structural units during Neogene chain building; (ii) the documentation, within the Lagonegro units, of along-strike variations of thermal maturity (thus maximum burial temperatures). This can be related to changes in the amount of tectonic burial associated with lateral variations of thrust sheet thickness; (iii) the recognition of different ages of exhumation characterizing the southern and northern sectors of the study area. In the southern sector exhumation is younger, and post-dates the emplacement of the allochthonous units onto the Apulian Platform carbonates (here in the late mature stage of hydrocarbon generation) exposed in the Mt. Alpi area. The latter is interpreted as a sector of localized, intense exhumation within the orogenic chain. In the northern sector, exhumation is older, thus an independent tectonic evolution of the allochthonous units appears to have occurred prior to their final emplacement in the present position on top of the buried Apulian Platform carbonates.

For the agricultural sector to develop sustainably in the future, progress toward more environmentally friendly technologies and methods is crucial. It is necessary to increase output while reducing the demand for energy, agrochemicals, and water resources. Although greenhouses can be utilized successfully for this purpose, significant technical advancements are required, especially when it comes to heating, to lower the use of fossil fuels and boost energy efficiency. Microwaves can warm plants without heating the entire greenhouse volume, which takes a significant amount of energy to compensate for heat loss in the outdoor environment. In this paper, through a thorough examination of the state of the art, a general overview of novel greenhouse heating systems based on radiation is reported. First, the strengths and weaknesses of microwave heating are discussed, and finally, the use of microwaves for soil sterilization is examined. All outcomes suggest these irradiation-based technologies can contribute significantly to energetically sustainable agriculture; moreover, they can be used to increase plant comfort.

To investigate the clinical impact of multiple courses of irradiation on pediatric patients with progressive diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), we conducted a retrospective case series on three children treated at our institution from 2018 to 2022. All children were candidates to receive systemic therapy with vinorelbine and nimotuzumab. Radiotherapy was administered to a total dose of 54 Gy. At any disease progression, our local tumor board evaluated the possibility of offering a new course of radiotherapy. To determine feasibility and assess toxicity rates, all children underwent clinical and hematological evaluation both during and after the treatment. To assess efficacy, all children performed contrast-enhanced MRI almost quarterly after the end of the treatment. In all children, following any treatment course, neurological improvement (>80%) was associated with a radiological response (41.7–46%). The longest overall survival (24 months) was observed in the child who underwent three courses of radiotherapy, without experiencing significant side effects. Even though it goes beyond the understanding of conventional radiobiology, first and second reirradiation in pediatric patients with progressive DIPG may represent a feasible and safe approach, capable of increasing overall survival and disease-free survival in selected patients and improving their quality of life.

The authors describe the discovery of the remains of two unidentified skeletonised individuals in a small town located in southern Italy. The bodies were discovered while workers were preparing to lay an oil pipeline. The two individuals were found at a depth of 2 meters, and in very close proximity to one other. The recovery process of the skeletonised remains and their related findings, carried out by a team of forensic anthropologists and archaeologists, is described here. Archaeological examination determined that the remains date back to the 4th millennium B.C. Forensic anthropological and odontological examinations were performed to determine the biological profile of the skeletal remains by estimation of age and height, as well as the determination of sex. Age determination was performed by the Kerley and Ubelaker (1978, Revision in the microscopic method of estimating age at death in human cortical bone. Am. J. Phys. Anthropol., 49, 545–546) histological method using a 1 mm thick piece of bone tissue taken from the diaphyses of femur in both individuals. Dental age was estimated by examining root transparency. In order to determine the height of the individuals, various research methods based on the dimensional values of particular skeletal structures were applied. DNA analysis showed genotype differences of all the systems as compared to the haplotypes of present day subjects.

Abstract We have further extended our compartmental model describing the spread of the infection in Italy. As in our previous work, the model assumes that the time evolution of the observable quantities (number of people still positive to the infection, hospitalized and fatalities cases, healed people, and total number of people that has contracted the infection) depends on average parameters, namely people diffusion coefficient, infection cross-section, and population density. The model provides information on the tight relationship between the variation of the reported infection cases and a well-defined observable physical quantity: the average number of people that lie within the daily displacement area of any single person. With respect to our previous paper, we have extended the analyses to several regions in Italy, characterized by different levels of restrictions and we have correlated them to the diffusion coefficient. Furthermore, the model now includes self-consistent evaluation of the reproduction index, effect of immunization due to vaccination, and potential impact of virus variants on the dynamical evolution of the outbreak. The model fits the epidemic data in Italy, and allows us to strictly relate the time evolution of the number of hospitalized cases and fatalities to the change of people mobility, vaccination rate, and appearance of an initial concentration of people positives for new variants of the virus.

- Abstract
Detailed stratigraphic and structural studies together with hydrogeological and geochemical reconstruction, monitored during time, are fundamental for understanding the relationships among cap rocks, reservoir and fluids circulation in geothermal areas and for planning resource exploitation. The Tocomar volcanic area (Puna plateau, Central Andes, NW Argentina) has a high geothermal potential testified by several thermal springs whose temperature values are between 30.3 and 70 °C, pH between 5.78 and 7.86 and Electric Conductivity between 0.82 and 20 mS/cm. The area is characterized by a dry climate (average rainfall lower than 100 mm per year) and it is crossed by the active NW-SE trans-Andean tectonic lineament known as the Calama-Olacapato-Toro (COT) fault system, which induces a high secondary permeability. Previous study (Giordano et al. 2013) suggest that the main geothermal reservoir is located within or below the Pre-Palaeozoic-Ordovician basement units, characterised by unevenly distributed secondary permeability. The reservoir is recharged by infiltration in the ridges above 4500 m asl. (Giordano et al. 2013), where basement rocks crop out. Below 4500 m asl., the reservoir is covered by low permeable Miocene-Quaternary units with poor circulation of shallow groundwater. Geothermal fluids upwell in areas with more intense fracturing, especially where main regional structures (particularly the COT-parallel lineaments) intersect secondary structures, such as at the Tocomar field. A multidisciplinary study on the Tocomar area integrating geological, structural, vulcanological, hydrogeological and geochemical field-based analysis, together with a geophysical investigation allowed us to produce the first results for the definition of the geothermal and hydrogeological conceptual model. Abstract The process of developing superconducting materials for large scale applications is mainly oriented to optimize flux pinning and the current carrying capability. A powerful approach to investigate pinning properties is to combine high resolution imaging with transport measurements as a function of the magnetic field orientation, supported by a pinning modelling. We carry out Transmission Electron Microscopy, Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy and critical current measurements in fields up to 16 T varying the angle between the field and c-axis of Fe(Se,Te) epitaxial thin films deposited on CaF2 substrates. We find evidence of nanoscale domains with different Te:Se stoichiometry and/or rotated and tilted axes, as well as of lattice distortions and two-dimensional defects at the grain boundaries. These elongated domains are tens of nm in size along the in-plane axes. We establish a correlation between these observed microstructural features and the pinning properties, specifically strongly enhanced pinning for the magnetic field oriented in-plane and pinning emerging at higher fields for out-of-plane direction. These features can be accounted for within a model where pinning centers are local variations of the critical temperature and local variations of the mean free path, respectively. The identification of all these growth induced defects acting as effective pinning centers may provide useful information for the optimization of Fe(Se,Te) coated conductors.

Abstract It is likely that when using an artificially augmented hand with six fingers, the natural five plus a robotic one, corticospinal motor synergies controlling grasping actions might be different. However, no direct neurophysiological evidence for this reasonable assumption is available yet. We used transcranial magnetic stimulation of the primary motor cortex to directly address this issue during motor imagery of objects’ grasping actions performed with or without the Soft Sixth Finger (SSF). The SSF is a wearable robotic additional thumb patented for helping patients with hand paresis and inherent loss of thumb opposition abilities. To this aim, we capitalized from the solid notion that neural circuits and mechanisms underlying motor imagery overlap those of physiological voluntary actions. After a few minutes of training, healthy humans wearing the SSF rapidly reshaped the pattern of corticospinal outputs towards forearm and hand muscles governing imagined grasping actions of different objects, suggesting the possibility that the extra finger might rapidly be encoded into the user’s body schema, which is integral part of the frontal-parietal grasping network. Such neural signatures might explain how the motor system of human beings is open to very quickly welcoming emerging augmentative bioartificial corticospinal grasping strategies. Such an ability might represent the functional substrate of a final common pathway the brain might count on towards new interactions with the surrounding objects within the peripersonal space. Findings provide a neurophysiological framework for implementing augmentative robotic tools in humans and for the exploitation of the SSF in conceptually new rehabilitation settings.

Background: The favorable role of SBRT for lymph-nodal oligometastases from prostate cancer has been reported by several retrospective and prospective experiences, suggesting a more indolent natural history of disease when compared to patients with bone oligometastases. This retrospective multicenter study evaluates the outcomes of a cohort of patients treated with stereotactic body radiotherapy for lymph-nodal oligometastases. Methods: Inclusion criteria were up to five lymph-nodal oligometastases detected either with Choline-PET or PSMA-PET in patients naïve for ADT or already ongoing with systemic therapy and at least 6 Gy per fraction for SBRT. Only patients with exclusive lymph-nodal disease were included. The primary endpoint of the study was LC; a toxicity assessment was retrospectively performed following CTCAE v4.0. Results: A total of 100 lymph-nodal oligometastases in 69 patients have been treated with SBRT between April 2015 and November 2022. The median age was 73 years (range, 60–85). Oligometastatic disease was mainly detected with Choline-PET in 47 cases, while the remaining were diagnosed using PSMA-PET, with most of the patients treated to a single lymph-nodal metastasis (48/69 cases), two in 14 cases, and three in the remaining cases. The median PSA prior to SBRT was 1.35 ng/mL (range, 0.3–23.7 ng/mL). Patients received SBRT with a median total dose of 35 Gy (range, 30–40 Gy) in a median number of 5 (range, 3–6) fractions. With a median follow-up of 16 months (range, 7–59 months), our LC rates were 95.8% and 86.3% at 1 and 2 years. DPFS rates were 90.4% and 53.4%, respectively, at 1 and 2 years, with nine patients developing a sequential oligometastatic disease treated with a second course of SBRT. Polymetastatic disease-free survival (PMFS) at 1 and 2 years was 98% and 96%. Six patients needed ADT after SBRT for a median time of ADT-free survival of 15 months (range, 6–22 months). The median OS was 16 months (range, 7–59) with 1- and 2-year rates of both 98%. In multivariate analysis, higher LC rates and the use of PSMA-PET were related to improved DPFS rates, and OS was significantly related to a lower incidence of distant progression. No G3 or higher adverse events were reported. Conclusions: In our experience, lymph-nodal SBRT for oligometastatic prostate cancer is a safe and effective option for ADT delay with no severe toxicity.

At the time of diagnosis, the vast majority of prostate carcinoma patients have a clinically localized form of the disease, with most of them presenting with low- or intermediate-risk prostate cancer. In this setting, various curative-intent alternatives are available, including surgery, external beam radiotherapy and brachytherapy. Randomized clinical trials have demonstrated that moderate hypofractionated radiotherapy can be considered as a valid alternative strategy for localized prostate cancer. High-dose-rate brachytherapy can be administered according to different schedules. Proton beam radiotherapy represents a promising strategy, but further studies are needed to make it more affordable and accessible. At the moment, new technologies such as MRI-guided radiotherapy remain in early stages, but their potential abilities are very promising.

Abstract Background Spinal cord compression (SCC) is an uncommon, severe complication of Hodgkin lymphoma (HL), occurring in 0.2% of cases at the onset and in 6% during disease progression. We present a teenager with SCC with clinical onset of HL; her pre-existing neurological abnormalities covered the presence of an epidural mass, which could have misled us. Case presentation A 13-year-old girl presented with a three-month history of lower back pain and degrading ability to walk. She suffered from a chronic gait disorder due to her preterm birth. A magnetic resonance imaging of the spine revealed an epidural mass causing collapse of twelfth thoracic vertebra and thus compression and displacement of the spinal cord. Histological examination with immunohistochemical analysis of the epidural mass demonstrated a classic-type Hodgkin lymphoma. Early pathology-specific treatment allowed to avoid urgent surgery, achieve survival and restore of neurological function. Conclusions Children and adolescents with back pain and neurological abnormalities should be prioritized to avoid diagnostic delay resulting in potential loss of neurological function. SCC requires a prompt radiological assessment and an expert multidisciplinary management.

Abstract Disturbances of conscious awareness, or self-disorders, are a defining feature of schizophrenia. These include symptoms such as delusions of control, i.e. the belief that one’s actions are controlled by an external agent. Models of self-disorders point at altered neural mechanisms of source monitoring, i.e. the ability of the brain to discriminate self-generated stimuli from those driven by the environment. However, evidence supporting this putative relationship is currently lacking. We performed electroencephalography (EEG) during self-paced, brisk right fist closures in ten (M = 9; F = 1) patients with Early-Course Schizophrenia (ECSCZ) and age and gender-matched healthy volunteers. We measured the Readiness Potential (RP), i.e. an EEG feature preceding self-generated movements, and movement-related EEG spectral changes. Self-disorders in ECSCZ were assessed with the Examination of Anomalous Self-Experience (EASE). Patients showed a markedly reduced RP and altered post-movement Event-Related Synchronization (ERS) in the beta frequency band (14–24 Hz) compared to healthy controls. Importantly, smaller RP and weaker ERS were associated with higher EASE scores in ECSCZ. Our data suggest that disturbances of neural correlates preceding and following self-initiated movements may reflect the severity of self-disorders in patients suffering from ECSCZ. These findings point towards deficits in basic mechanisms of sensorimotor integration as a substrate for self-disorders.
