We present a novel computational framework for simulating suspensions of rigid spherical Janus particles in Stokes flow. We show that long-range Janus particle interactions for a wide array of applications may be resolved using fast, spectrally accurate boundary integral methods tailored to polydisperse suspensions of spherical particles. These are incorporated into our rigid body Stokes platform. Our approach features the use of spherical harmonic expansions for spectrally accurate integral operator evaluation, complementarity-based collision resolution, and optimal O(n) scaling with the number of particles when accelerated via fast summation techniques. We demonstrate the flexibility of our platform through three key examples of Janus particle systems prominent in biomedical applications: amphiphilic, bipolar electric and phoretic particles. We formulate Janus particle interactions in boundary integral form and showcase characteristic self-assembly and complex collective behavior for each particle type.

We describe a computational framework for simulating suspensions of rigid particles in Newtonian Stokes flow. One central building block is a collision-resolution algorithm that overcomes the numerical constraints arising from particle collisions. This algorithm extends the well-known complementarity method for non-smooth multi-body dynamics to resolve collisions in dense rigid body suspensions. This approach formulates the collision resolution problem as a linear complementarity problem with geometric `non-overlapping' constraints imposed at each timestep. It is then reformulated as a constrained quadratic programming problem and the Barzilai-Borwein projected gradient descent method is applied for its solution. This framework is designed to be applicable for any convex particle shape, e.g., spheres and spherocylinders, and applicable to any Stokes mobility solver, including the Rotne-Prager-Yamakawa approximation, Stokesian Dynamics, and PDE solvers (e.g., boundary integral and immersed boundary methods). In particular, this method imposes Newton's Third Law and records the entire contact network. Further, we describe a fast, parallel, and spectrally-accurate boundary integral method tailored for spherical particles, capable of resolving lubrication effects. We show weak and strong parallel scalings up to $8\times 10^4$ particles with approximately $4\times 10^7$ degrees of freedom on $1792$ cores. We demonstrate the versatility of this framework with several examples, including sedimentation of particle clusters, and active matter systems composed of ensembles of particles driven to rotate.

In the last two decades, increased need for high-fidelity simulations of the time evolution and propagation of forces in granular media has spurred renewed interest in discrete element method (DEM) modeling of frictional contact. Force penalty methods, while economic and accessible, introduce artificial stiffness, requiring small time steps to retain numerical stability. Optimization-based methods, which enforce contacts geometrically through complementarity constraints, allow the use of larger time steps at the expense of solving a nonlinear complementarity problem (NCP) each time step. We review the latest efforts to produce solvers for this NCP, focusing on its relaxation to a cone complementarity problem (CCP) and solution via an equivalent quadratic optimization problem with conic constraints. We distinguish between linearly convergent first order methods and second order methods, which gain quadratic convergence and more robust performance at the expense of the solution of large sparse linear systems. We propose a novel acceleration for the solution of Newton step linear systems in second order methods using low-rank compression based fast direct solvers. We use the Quantized Tensor Train (QTT) decomposition to produce efficient approximate representations of the system matrix and its inverse. This provides a robust framework to accelerate its solution in a direct or a preconditioned iterative method. In a number of numerical tests, we demonstrate that this approach displays sublinear scaling of precomputation costs, may be efficiently updated across Newton iterations as well as across time steps, and leads to a fast, optimal complexity solution of the Newton step. This allows our method to gain an order of magnitude speedups over state-of-the-art preconditioning techniques for moderate to large-scale systems, mitigating the computational bottleneck of second order methods., Comment: Submitted to the Journal Applied Mechanics Reviews (ASME) (invited article)

6. Boundary integral equation analysis for suspension of spheres in Stokes flow

We show that the standard boundary integral operators, defined on the unit sphere, for the Stokes equations diagonalize on a specific set of vector spherical harmonics and provide formulas for their spectra. We also derive analytical expressions for evaluating the operators away from the boundary. When two particle are located close to each other, we use a truncated series expansion to compute the hydrodynamic interaction. On the other hand, we use the standard spectrally accurate quadrature scheme to evaluate smooth integrals on the far-field, and accelerate the resulting discrete sums using the fast multipole method (FMM). We employ this discretization scheme to analyze several boundary integral formulations of interest including those arising in porous media flow, active matter and magneto-hydrodynamics of rigid particles. We provide numerical results verifying the accuracy and scaling of their evaluation.

7. An integral equation formulation for rigid bodies in Stokes flow in three dimensions

We present a new derivation of a boundary integral equation (BIE) for simulating the three-dimensional dynamics of arbitrarily-shaped rigid particles of genus zero immersed in a Stokes fluid, on which are prescribed forces and torques. Our method is based on a single-layer representation and leads to a simple second-kind integral equation. It avoids the use of auxiliary sources within each particle that play a role in some classical formulations. We use a spectrally accurate quadrature scheme to evaluate the corresponding layer potentials, so that only a small number of spatial discretization points per particle are required. The resulting discrete sums are computed in $\mathcal{O}(n)$ time, where $n$ denotes the number of particles, using the fast multipole method (FMM). The particle positions and orientations are updated by a high-order time-stepping scheme. We illustrate the accuracy, conditioning and scaling of our solvers with several numerical examples.

8. A Tensor-Train accelerated solver for integral equations in complex geometries

We present a framework using the Quantized Tensor Train (QTT) decomposition to accurately and efficiently solve volume and boundary integral equations in three dimensions. We describe how the QTT decomposition can be used as a hierarchical compression and inversion scheme for matrices arising from the discretization of integral equations. For a broad range of problems, computational and storage costs of the inversion scheme are extremely modest $O(\log N)$ and once the inverse is computed, it can be applied in $O(N \log N)$. We analyze the QTT ranks for hierarchically low rank matrices and discuss its relationship to commonly used hierarchical compression techniques such as FMM and HSS. We prove that the QTT ranks are bounded for translation-invariant systems and argue that this behavior extends to non-translation invariant volume and boundary integrals. For volume integrals, the QTT decomposition provides an efficient direct solver requiring significantly less memory compared to other fast direct solvers. We present results demonstrating the remarkable performance of the QTT-based solver when applied to both translation and non-translation invariant volume integrals in 3D. For boundary integral equations, we demonstrate that using a QTT decomposition to construct preconditioners for a Krylov subspace method leads to an efficient and robust solver with a small memory footprint. We test the QTT preconditioners in the iterative solution of an exterior elliptic boundary value problem (Laplace) formulated as a boundary integral equation in complex, multiply connected geometries.

9. An O(N) Direct Solver for Integral Equations on the Plane

An efficient direct solver for volume integral equations with O(N) complexity for a broad range of problems is presented. The solver relies on hierarchical compression of the discretized integral operator, and exploits that off-diagonal blocks of certain dense matrices have numerically low rank. Technically, the solver is inspired by previously developed direct solvers for integral equations based on "recursive skeletonization" and "Hierarchically Semi-Separable" (HSS) matrices, but it improves on the asymptotic complexity of existing solvers by incorporating an additional level of compression. The resulting solver has optimal O(N) complexity for all stages of the computation, as demonstrated by both theoretical analysis and numerical examples. The computational examples further display good practical performance in terms of both speed and memory usage. In particular, it is demonstrated that even problems involving 10^{7} unknowns can be solved to precision 10^{-10} using a simple Matlab implementation of the algorithm executed on a single core., Comment: Submitted to the SIAM Journal of Scientific Computing (May 14, 2013). 32 pages, 12 figures, 6 sections

10. Local economic development in Mexico : the contribution of the bottom-up approach

This thesis examines the contribution of the bottom-up approach towards local economic development (LED) in Mexico. It applies a combination of methodologies to assess if the growing importance of this approach in the public policy arena is supported by a more focused and systematic analysis. In doing so, the aim is to offer a broader and deeper understanding of the key elements of the bottom-up perspective and their specific impact on the economic and social development of places, by considering a large sample of Mexican municipalities; and to better comprehend the effects of local actions and interactions on the shape and effectiveness of those key elements by focusing on two municipalities, which have adopted different strategies. The first part of the empirical analysis uses a quantitative methodology and presents – to the best of our knowledge – the first nationwide quantitative assessment of the impact of the constituents of the bottom-up approach on the development fortunes of local jurisdictions. The analysis relies on a purpose-built database of 898 municipalities in Mexico and on heteroscedasticity-consistent ordinary least square (OLS) regression methods to evaluate whether the implementation of six different components of the bottom-up development strategies – development plan, sustainability, entrepreneurship, capacity building, participation mechanisms, and development links – has delivered greater human development across Mexican municipalities. The results of the analysis indicate that municipalities engaging in LED have witnessed improvements in human development, relative to those which have overlooked it. The increase in human development has been greatest for those local authorities which have pursued capacity building, the establishment of development links and which have drafted a development plan based on a local diagnosis. The second part of the analysis uses a case-study methodology to dig deeper on two Mexican municipalities – Apizaco and Chiautempan – located in Tlaxcala, one of the Mexican states which has set up an institutional framework aimed at encouraging greater participation. Our findings reveal that while the implementation of certain aspects of the bottom-up approach have had a clear relevant positive contribution to economic and social development, a series of local challenges have clearly shaped the effectiveness of the LED strategies applied in both municipalities. In addition, the analysis shows that Apizaco, the local authority which pursued LED in a more comprehensive way, experienced a greater improvement in socio-economic development.

14. Institutional context for local economic development in Mexico, 1990-2015. A need for change?

People?s quality of life in specific places is affected by their territories? characteristics and local agents? actions and interactions, as well as their responses to external influences. Formal and informal institutions contribute to shape those actions, interactions and responses. Following North (1990) and Storper (1995), the economic performance of places is influenced by their particular institutional setting; and, therefore, by the way a particular society is organised. Hence, the political and social dimensions acquire special importance. Relating those ideas to the bottom-up approach towards development, and its positive effect on the development of Mexican municipalities found by Rodriguez-Pose and Palavicini-Corona (2013), it is relevant and interesting to analyse if, in the Mexican context, formal and informal institutions have facilitated or not economic development at the local level. As the basis of the development from below approach stems from its proximity to local characteristics and agents, the lowest level of government jurisdiction is the focus of analysis. Two municipalities located in a Mexican state with a long presence of institutions and resulting mechanisms closer to citizens were selected in order to further assess the role of institutions. The hypothesis tested is that the general formal institutional context in Mexico has a relevant propitious role in LED. In relation to the case studies, the hypothesis is that a more favourable effect in one of the studied municipalities than the other is due to differences in the functioning of their formal institutions and the particularities of their informal ones. It was found that the national and sub-national formal institutional setting has allowed and, at some degree, stimulated municipalities to plan and execute local economic development actions during the period of analysis (1990-2015). However, abiding to the law and enforcing it are the main aspects to be addressed in this Latin American country. As far as the case studies are concerned, significant differences in their informal institutions affected the presence of the LED approach and their development performance from 1990 to 2010. Finally, in light of the concrete findings, I present a set of proposals to both introduce some adjustments to the legal framework and make the best of current formal and informal institutions prevailing in Mexico, in general, and the studied municipalities, in particular.

Different levels of government, multilateral organisations such as the World Bank (WB), and a great number of non-governmental organisations around the globe state either explicitly or implicitly their intentions to improve the development of places. Their main goal is to help societies to achieve higher standards in economic, educational, health and social security aspects, among others. To do this, they put emphasis on particular issues and, as a consequence, many adjectives to the word development have become common in the public policy literature. Thereby, combined words like human development, economic development, sustainable development and social development are familiar among practitioners and experts working to improve the well-being of people in diverse parts of the world. In addition, since 1990 scholars and multilateral organisations such as the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) have recommended a local (i.e. the lowest sub-national level) response to the development challenges and opportunities originated by the globalisation of the world economy. In this context, the impact of bottom-up strategies towards local economic development has not been sufficiently assessed for both developed and developing countries. This paper presents a first approximation towards assessing the impact of such strategies in Mexican municipalities by proposing a simple model linking them to measures of human and social well-being such as the components of the human development index (HDI) calculated since 1990 by the United Nations Development Programme.

- Abstract
Recientemente se ha renovado el interés de la comunidad médica hacia las malformaciones arteriovenosas cerebrales. Esto se debe, ven parte, a la aparición de publicaciones que desafían su etiología universalmente aceptada como congénita; lo cual nos ha hecho ver lo poco que sabemos sobre la formación, evolución y comportamiento de estas lesiones. La terapia endovascular como nueva opción de tratamiento que se agrega a las ya existentes nos ha hecho entender que el tratamiento de estas lesiones debe ser multidisciplinario. Finalmente, la amplia difusión de los estudios de imagen no invasivos ha llevado a que contemos con una población de pacientes que antes no se estudiaban aisladamente en los estudios clínicos: Las malformaciones arteriovenosas no rotas y/o incidentales. Creciente controversia se vive en estos momentos acerca del tratamiento de estos pacientes. En esta publicación hacemos una revisión de aspectosbásicos de las malformaciones arteriovenosas y los confrontamos a publicaciones recientes y estudios que se están llevando a cabo como el ARUBA (A Randomized Multicenter Clinical Trial of Unruptured Brain AVMs). También discutimos las opciones de tratamiento y nuestra posición en la toma de decisiones del manejo de estos pacientes.

Trabajo de fin de Grado. Grado en Derecho. Curso académico 2017-2018, [ES] En el presente trabajo se analiza el contrato de apertura de crédito. Este se define como aquel contrato por el cual el Banco se obliga, dentro del límite pactado y mediante una comisión que percibe del cliente, a poner a disposición de este, y a medida de sus requerimientos, sumas de dinero o a realizar otras prestaciones que le permitan obtenerlo al cliente. Se trata de un contrato consensual, oneroso, bilateral y legalmente atípico. La necesidad de financiación de las empresas y profesionales hace que sea unos de los principales contratos que se encuentran en la práctica bancaria. A pesar, de ser utilizado por los empresarios y profesionales para que financien sus negocios, también pude ser utilizado por particulares. Este contrato otorga una gran flexibilidad al cliente debido a que podrán ir disponiendo de las cantidades de dinero que vaya necesitando, pagando intereses únicamente de las cantidades de las que vaya disponiendo, por lo que, este contrato ofrece ventajas frente a otros contratos bancarios que gozan de menor flexibilidad, [EN] In the present work the credit opening contract is analyzed. This is defined as a contract by which the Bank is obliged, within the limit of payment and by means of a commission that receives from the client, a provision of this, a measure of their needs, an amount of money or an additional benefit get it to the customer. It is a consensual, onerous, bilateral and legally atypical contract. The need for financing of companies and professionals makes it one of the main contracts found in banking practice. Despite being used by businessmen and professionals to finance their business, it could also be used by individuals. This contract grants a great flexibility to the client due to the fact that they will be able to use the amounts of money they need, paying interest only on the amounts they have available, so, this contract offers advantages over other banking contracts that enjoy of less flexibility.

[ES] El término gestión colectiva hace referencia a aquellas formas de ejercicio conjunto de los derechos de autor y derechos conexos, cuando existen aspectos verdaderamente colectivizados (condiciones uniformes de concesión de licencias, tales como la fijación de tarifas por el uso de partes o la totalidad de las obras o prestaciones incluidas en el repertorio de la entidad, normas de recaudación, normas de reparto de beneficios entre los asociados, etc.), cuando estas formas de ejercicio conjunto están respaldadas por una comunidad organizada de acuerdo con unas reglas legales y estatutarias, y cuando la organización realiza otras actividades o servicios de carácter asistencial o de formación y promoción para sus socios que van más allá del mero cumplimiento de las tareas de gestión de derechos . En el marco de un sistema de gestión colectiva, los titulares de derechos de propiedad intelectual encomiendan a las organizaciones de gestión colectiva el control el uso que se hace de sus obras y prestaciones, la negociación con los posibles usuarios la concesión licencias no exclusivas a cambio de una remuneración adecuada basada en un sistema de tarifas así como la recaudación de dicha remuneración y distribución entre los titulares de derechos de acuerdo con los criterios fijados en sus estatutos. Este sistema de gestión colectiva ofrece importantes ventajas no sólo a los titulares de derechos sino a los usuarios comerciales. A los primeros les permite obtener un retorno económico por los actos de explotación sobre sus obras y prestaciones que difícilmente podrían controlar directa y personalmente. A los segundos les ofrece tener acceso de forma sencilla a las licencias sobre los derechos de PI para la explotación de dichas obras y prestaciones a través de una ventanilla única. De modo que, en principio, la gestión colectiva supone un factor de equilibrio entre los intereses de la propiedad y los intereses del acceso. Estas ventajas son especialmente relevantes en el caso de los actos secundarios de explotación o de uso no comercial de obras y prestaciones afines; máxime cuando en un mismo acto de uso o explotación convergen derechos de diferentes grupos de titulares (como sucede, por ejemplo, en la comunicación pública de fonogramas). Estos actos secundarios de explotación o uso pueden encontrarse bajo la cobertura de un derecho exclusivo de los titulares de derechos (como sucede con la retransmisión de obras y producciones audiovisuales por cable) o de un derecho de mera remuneración o de compensación equitativa (como es el caso de la comunicación pública en establecimientos abiertos al público). No obstante, e independientemente del tipo de derecho, el legislador impone en estos casos la gestión colectiva. Partiendo de las premisas establecidas en los puntos anteriores, desde la perspectiva del derecho de la competencia las entidades de gestión son consideradas como empresas (siendo independiente esta calificación de su forma jurídica y de sus objetivos últimos) que van a ejercer actividades de prestación de servicios sobre un mercado bilateral, compuesto, de una parte, por los titulares de derechos, y de otra, por los usuarios comerciales. En la práctica, observamos que cada entidad de gestión se sitúa, en el país en el que se halla establecida, en una posición de interlocutor único entre estas dos categorías de “clientes”. Esta situación viene provocada por las propias particularidades económicas de la gestión colectiva, que configuran a las entidades de gestión como monopolios naturales. A pesar de los previsibles beneficios de la gestión colectiva, en numerosas ocasiones, bien debido a su posición de monopolio natural (o, en ocasiones, legal) en un mercado bilateral, bien como consecuencia de ciertas condiciones establecidas en los acuerdos de reciprocidad entre entidades de gestión, éstas han incurrido en importantes infracciones del derecho de la competencia. Estas conductas, unidas al desarrollo exponencial de los nuevos canales de explotación y acceso a las obras debido a las nuevas tecnologías, han generado, en los últimos años, fuertes reacciones contra esta figura. Dos cuestiones fundamentales van a convertirse, respectivamente, en los “caballos de batalla” del legislador europeo y nacional: la implementación de la competencia en concesión de licencias multiterritoriales y el control en el establecimiento de las tarifas por las entidades de gestión. No obstante, a nuestro entender, las soluciones adoptadas tanto a nivel europeo como nacional no parecen ser las opciones más adecuadas, puesto que no tiene en cuenta importantes aspectos tanto jurídicos como económicos que configuran la gestión colectiva. El objetivo del presente estudio es, pues, ofrecer una visión general y completa del panorama existente respecto a esta materia, apuntando nuevas soluciones respecto a los problemas actuales de la gestión colectiva, teniendo siempre como referencia la ponderación de los intereses en juego, que, especialmente, en este caso, no son baladíes.
