Abstract

A generalized two-dimensional cubic Lotka-Volterra model with infinitesimal parameters is studied. Three different cases have been considered, one non-degenerate and two degenerate. The local behavior of the model has been studied in the three cases. Six bifurcation diagrams with thirty different regions have been obtained in the non-degenerate case, respectively, sixteen diagrams with forty regions in the two degenerate cases.

Abstract

Bioactive dressings are obtained using substances which release bioactive compounds. A way of immobilization active ingredients on various textile materials is through emulsions based on natural polymers. Active ingredients, like essential oils and propolis play an important role in the inhibition and prevention of bacterial growth. Chitosan and xanthan gum are suitable for essential oil entrapment due to their biodegradability, low product costs and environmentally friendly production processes. The aim of this paper is to highlight the antimicrobial activity and biocompatibility of textile materials treated with cinnamon essential oil and propolis based emulsions. In this respect, experimental samples of oil-in-water emulsions type, based on chitosan-propolis-cinnamon essential oil and xanthan-propolis-cinnamon essential oil were prepared and then were immobilized on woven fabrics with different fiber compositions. The functionalized textile materials were characterized in terms of their physical-mechanical and physical-chemical characteristics, antibacterial activity and biocompatibility point of view. From the corroboration of the obtained data it was found that the obtained samples are more hydrophobic than the untreated material and the bioactive polymeric systems have shown antibacterial activity for both gram positive bacteria (S. aureus) and gram negative bacteria (E. coli) test strains. The in vitro biocompatibility evaluation on human skin cells confirmed the absence of cytotoxicity after the short-term exposure. Also, the treated samples displayed a good biocompatibility without skin irritations.

3. Explosive sequence of La Soufrière St Vincent April 2021:Insights into drivers and consequences via eruptive products

Abstract

This paper forensically reconstructs the timings, impacts and processes that drove the sequence of explosive eruptions of La Soufrière, St Vincent in April 2021 using a combination of field-based stratigraphy and textural dissection of the deposit character together with contemporary visual observations. Explosive activity on 9th and early on 10th April involved destruction of almost all of the 2020/2021 lava dome, ∼ 60% of the 1979 dome and formation of a 600 m diameter crater by 2pm UTC on 10th April. Following the initial explosion, plumes rose to altitudes of ∼15 km and pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) formed by column collapse, first occurred on 10th April, only after > 24hrs of explosive activity. Dense PDCs reached the sea only in the Larikai and Roseau Valleys, and dilute PDCs were restricted to within 2.5 km of the Summit Crater rim. The tephra fallout deposits are stratified, composed of numerous layers of both lapilli-rich and ash-rich layers, which we have grouped into at least 7 Units, based on their common characteristics (Units 1 to 7). Volume estimates, using a range of techniques to constrain uncertainties, indicate that the bulk volume of tephra (fallout and PDC) is 1.19 x 108m3 +/− 20% making this a VEI 4 eruption. Abstract

Wound healing is a specific biological process related to the general phenomenon of growth and tissue regeneration. Polysaccharide gels are usually biocompatible and show several peculiar physical-chemical properties that make them suitable for a variety of biomedical applications. The hydrogels based on these types of polymers can cool the wound and reduce pain, which is helpful for burns or painful wounds. This paper aims to study the antibacterial activity of a layer-by-layer hydrogel “carrier” system based on sodium alginate and chitosan, which is further functionalized with active principles, like hyaluronic acid, or ZnO nanoparticles, or bacitracin. The synthesis of the hydrogels system was followed by the immobilization on textile woven fabrics made of fibrous blends of different chemical compositions, in order to achieve bioactive wound dressing for application in the treatment of inflammatory skin conditions. The textile materials used to produce the wound dressings have the same weave and warp thread (100% cotton, Nm 50/2), but different weft thread (100% acetate 130 dtex or 100% Lenpur Nm 34/1). For this purpose, several experimental variants of hydrogels were prepared and the treated textile materials were characterized from a physical-chemical and comfort point of view. The antibacterial activity and the biocompatibility of the textile materials functionalized with the hydrogels and active ingredients were also investigated. The textile materials treated with the synthesized hydrogels and subsequent bacitracin addition show an antibacterial effect on both S. aureus and E. coli test strains, while the hydrogels followed by ZnO nanoparticles addition show an antibacterial effect against S. aureus.

Abstract

Southeastern European countries undergo significant changes in the demand/supply ratio on the labour market and in the structure of professional competences that are necessary for undertaking a professional activity. In addition, brain-drain process and decrease of interest for a career in basic sciences put many challenges for our community. Consequently, based on the activity of the Southeastern European Network in Mathematical and Theoretical Physics (SEENET MTP Network) in connecting groups and persons working in mathematics and theoretical physics, we investigate specific qualifications recognized in these fields in all the countries from the region, and the related competences necessary for practicing the respective occupations. A list of new possible occupations will be promoted for inclusion in the National Qualifications Register for Higher Education. Abstract

REGISTRY Investigators of the European Huntington's Disease Network and COHORT Investigators of the Huntington Study Group., Studying individuals with extreme phenotypes could facilitate the understanding of disease modification by genetic or environmental factors. Our aim was to identify Huntington's disease (HD) patients with extreme symbol digit modality test (SDMT) scores. We first examined in HD the contribution of cognitive measures of the Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale (UHDRS) in predicting clinical endpoints. The language-independent SDMT was used to identify patients performing very well or very poorly relative to their CAG and age cohort. We used data from REGISTRY and COHORT observational study participants (5,603 HD participants with CAG repeats above 39 with 13,868 visits) and of 1,006 healthy volunteers (with 2,241 visits), included to identify natural aging and education effects on cognitive measures. Separate Cox proportional hazards models with CAG, age at study entry, education, sex, UHDRS total motor score and cognitive (SDMT, verbal fluency, Stroop tests) scores as covariates were used to predict clinical endpoints. Quantile regression for longitudinal language-independent SDMT data was used for boundary (2.5% and 97.5% quantiles) estimation and extreme score analyses stratified by age, education, and CAG repeat length. Ten percent of HD participants had an extreme SDMT phenotype for at least one visit. In contrast, only about 3% of participants were consistent SDMT extremes at two or more visits. The thresholds for the one-visit and two-visit extremes can be used to classify existing and new individuals. Abstract

Bioactive dressings are obtained using substances which release bioactive compounds. A way of immobilization active ingredients on various textile materials is through emulsions based on natural polymers. Active ingredients, like essential oils and propolis play an important role in the inhibition and prevention of bacterial growth. Chitosan and xanthan gum are suitable for essential oil entrapment due to their biodegradability, low product costs and environmentally friendly production processes. The aim of this paper is to highlight the antimicrobial activity and biocompatibility of textile materials treated with cinnamon essential oil and propolis based emulsions. In this respect, experimental samples of oil-in-water emulsions type, based on chitosan-propolis-cinnamon essential oil and xanthan-propolis-cinnamon essential oil were prepared and then were immobilized on woven fabrics with different fiber compositions. The functionalized textile materials were characterized in terms of their physical-mechanical and physical-chemical characteristics, antibacterial activity and biocompatibility point of view. From the corroboration of the obtained data it was found that the obtained samples are more hydrophobic than the untreated material and the bioactive polymeric systems have shown antibacterial activity for both gram positive bacteria (S. aureus) and gram negative bacteria (E. coli) test strains. The in vitro biocompatibility evaluation on human skin cells confirmed the absence of cytotoxicity after the short-term exposure. Abstract

Objectives. The objective of this study was to assess the effect that triple therapy (anticoagulation plus CS plus plasma exchange and/or IVIGs) has on the mortality risk of patients with catastrophic APS (CAPS) included in the CAPS Registry. Methods. Patients from the CAPS Registry were grouped based on their treatments: triple therapy; drugs included in the triple therapy but in different combinations; and none of the treatments included in the triple therapy. The primary endpoint was all-cause mortality. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to compare mortality risk between groups. Results. The CAPS Registry cohort included 525 episodes of CAPS accounting for 502 patients. After excluding 54 episodes (10.3%), a total of 471 patients with CAPS were included [mean (S.D.) age 38.5 years (17); 68.2% female primary APS patients 62%]. Overall, 174 (36.9%) patients died. Triple therapy was prescribed in 189 episodes (40.1%), other combinations in 270 (57.3%) and none of those treatments in 12 episodes (2.5%); the mortality rate in the three groups was 28.6, 41.1 and 75%, respectively. Triple therapy was positively associated with a higher chance of survival when compared with non-treatment [adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 9.7, 95% CI: 2.3, 40.6] or treatment with other combinations of drugs included in the triple therapy (adjusted OR = 1.7, 95% CI: 1.2, 2.6). No statistical differences were found between patients that received triple therapy with plasma exchange or IVIGs (P = 0.92). Conclusion. Triple therapy is independently associated with a higher survival rate among patients with CAPS. © The Author(s) 2018. Abstract

Wound healing is a specific biological process related to the general phenomenon of growth and tissue regeneration. Polysaccharide gels are usually biocompatible and show several peculiar physicalchemical properties that make them suitable for a variety of biomedical applications. The hydrogels based on these types of polymers can cool the wound and reduce pain, which is helpful for burns or painful wounds. This paper aims to study the antibacterial activity of a layer-by-layer hydrogel "carrier" system based on sodium alginate and chitosan, which is further functionalized with active principles, like hyaluronic acid, or ZnO nanoparticles, or bacitracin. The synthesis of the hydrogels system was followed by the immobilization on textile woven fabrics made of fibrous blends of different chemical compositions, in order to achieve bioactive wound dressing for application in the treatment of inflammatory skin conditions. The textile materials used to produce the wound dressings have the same weave and warp thread (100% cotton, Nm 50/2), but different weft thread (100% acetate 130 dtex or 100% Lenpur Nm 34/1). For this purpose, several experimental variants of hydrogels were prepared and the treated textile materials were characterized from a physicalchemical and comfort point of view. The antibacterial activity and the biocompatibility of the textile materials functionalized with the hydrogels and active ingredients were also investigated. The textile materials treated with the synthesized hydrogels and subsequent bacitracin addition show an antibacterial effect on both S. aureus and E. coli test strains, while the hydrogels followed by ZnO nanoparticles addition show an antibacterial effect against S. aureus. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Previous studies indicate increased prevalences of suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and completed suicide in Huntington's disease (HD) compared with the general population. This study investigates correlates and predictors of suicidal ideation in HD.METHODS: The study cohort consisted of 2106 HD mutation carriers, all participating in the REGISTRY study of the European Huntington's Disease Network. Of the 1937 participants without suicidal ideation at baseline, 945 had one or more follow-up measurements. Participants were assessed for suicidal ideation by the behavioural subscale of the Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale (UHDRS). Correlates of suicidal ideation were analyzed using logistic regression analysis and predictors were analyzed using Cox regression analysis.RESULTS: At baseline, 169 (8.0%) mutation carriers endorsed suicidal ideation. Disease duration (odds ratio [OR]=0.96; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.9-1.0), anxiety (OR=2.14; 95%CI: 1.4-3.3), aggression (OR=2.41; 95%CI: 1.5-3.8), a previous suicide attempt (OR=3.95; 95%CI: 2.4-6.6), and a depressed mood (OR=13.71; 95%CI: 6.7-28.0) were independently correlated to suicidal ideation at baseline. The 4-year cumulative incidence of suicidal ideation was 9.9%. Longitudinally, the presence of a depressed mood (hazard ratio [HR]=2.05; 95%CI: 1.1-4.0) and use of benzodiazepines (HR=2.44; 95%CI: 1.2-5.0) at baseline were independent predictors of incident suicidal ideation, whereas a previous suicide attempt was not predictive.LIMITATIONS: As suicidal ideation was assessed by only one item, and participants were a selection of all HD mutation carriers, the prevalence of suicidal ideation was likely underestimated.CONCLUSIONS: Suicidal ideation in HD frequently occurs. Assessment of suicidal ideation is a priority in mutation carriers with a depressed mood and in those using benzodiazepines.

Using a purposive sample, the research analysed the ethnic make-up of Rroma individuals and found that contrary to uninformed perceptions, Rroma community is immensely diverse and can be described through two generic types: a Traditional Gypsies type and a Modern Rroma type. The Traditional Gypsies type would generally describe the Gypsies who at individual or collective level still preserve in their day to day life a collection of Gypsy ethnic practices. By contrast, the Modern Rroma type would refer to those Rroma who having began recently or generations back a process of ethnic transition and/or assimilation into the wider Romanian community now share only a few traditional ethnic practices. Next, the research classified occupations encountered, analysed whether intra-generational and inter-generational social mobility occurs and found that Rroma community experiences a dynamic pattern of multi-directional and multi-speed social mobility as well as a distinct process of ethnic transition. Ethnic transition describes the process through which respondents shed ethnic practices and move away from distinct Gypsy ethnic identities towards "symbolic" identities. Thirdly, the research analysed the impact of education on social trajectories and found that contrary to uninformed prejudice, a majority of Rroma tend to hold education in high esteem and that they do benefit socially from it. Far from questioning its relevance or fearing it, formal education is accepted and aspired to by Traditional Gypsies who understand its potential impact upon their living standard. Modem Rroma too, value education though their ideal attainment levels tend to be higher than those of Traditional Gypsies. The gap between abstract preferences and real school participation is maintained less by discrimination alone but by a rational choice evaluation through a cost (including discrimination) benefit analysis. Formal education is essential for Rroma's social mobility though Traditional Gypsies necessitate lesser levels than Modern Rroma who, to compete in the Gadje world, require the same amount of education for comparative occupation levels as other members of the wider community.

Abstract

Scrapie is a prionic illness with endemic character in many parts of the glob, and the control measures is difficult to apply because of the long incubation period, the lack of the preclinical manifestation and the existing tests for diagnostic in living animals. The Ppn-p locus is polymorphic with known variability at codon 136, 154, 171, which are associated with different sensibility in experimental and natural spongiform encephalopaties. General the possible combinations of the 5 amino acids encoded by the 3 different codons will determine the existence of 15 possible genotypes. To put in evidence those polymorphisms at the ovine Prn-p locus, several methods are developed but the most accurate assay is the direct sequencing of the gene and the primer extension technique. The purpose of this study was to determine the genotypes at Prp locus in 123 male of Tsurcana breed, Hateg ecotype, using primer extension technique (ABI 3130xl Genetic Analyzer) and to establish the risk groups of the susceptibility at scrapie disease.

Abstract

The cause of Huntington disease (HD) is a polyglutamine repeat expansion of more than 36 units in the huntingtin protein, which is inversely correlated with the age at onset of the disease. However, additional genetic factors are believed to modify the course and the age at onset of HD. Recently, we identified the V471A polymorphism in the autophagy-related gene ATG7, a key component of the autophagy pathway that plays an important role in HD pathogenesis, to be associated with the age at onset in a large group of European Huntington disease patients. To confirm this association in a second independent patient cohort, we analysed the ATG7 V471A polymorphism in additional 1,464 European HD patients of the "REGISTRY" cohort from the European Huntington Disease Network (EHDN). In the entire REGISTRY cohort we could not confirm a modifying effect of the ATG7 V471A polymorphism. However, analysing a modifying effect of ATG7 in these REGISTRY patients and in patients of our previous HD cohort according to their ethnic origin, we identified a significant effect of the ATG7 V471A polymorphism on the HD age at onset only in the Italian population (327 patients). In these Italian patients, the polymorphism is associated with a 6-years earlier disease onset and thus seems to have an aggravating effect. We could specify the role of ATG7 as a genetic modifier for HD particularly in the Italian population. This result affirms the modifying influence of the autophagic pathway on the course of HD, but also suggests population-specific modifying mechanisms in HD pathogenesis.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) is a rare triplet repeat (CAG) disorder. Advanced, multi-centre, multi-national research frameworks are needed to study simultaneously multiple complementary aspects of HD. This includes the natural history of HD, its management and the collection of clinical information and biosamples for research. METHODS: We report on cross-sectional data of the first 1766 participants in REGISTRY, the European Huntington's Disease Network's (EHDN), multi-lingual, multi-national prospective observational study of HD in Europe. Data collection (demographics, phenotype, genotype, medication, co-morbidities, biosamples) followed a standard protocol. RESULTS: Phenotype, and the HD genotype, of manifest HD participants across different European regions was similar. Motor onset was most common (48%) with a non-motor onset in more than a third of participants. Motor signs increased, and cognitive abilities and functional capacity declined as the disease burden (CAGn-35.5) X age) increased. A life-time history of behavioural symptoms was common, but the behavioural score was not related to disease burden. One fifth of participants had severe psychiatric problems, e.g. suicidal ideation and attempts, and/or irritability/aggression, with psychosis being less common. Participants on anti-dyskinetic medication had a higher motor and lower cognitive score, were older, and more prone to physical trauma. A higher motor and a lower cognitive score predicted more advanced disease. CONCLUSIONS: The unparalleled collection of clinical data and biomaterials within the EHDN's REGISTRY can expedite the search for disease modifiers (genetic and environmental) of age at onset and disease progression that could be harnessed for the development of novel treatments.

Abstract

Huntington's disease results from a CAG repeat expansion within the Huntingtin gene; this is measured routinely in diagnostic laboratories. The European Huntington's Disease Network REGISTRY project centrally measures CAG repeat lengths on fresh samples; these were compared with the original results from 121 laboratories across 15 countries. We report on 1326 duplicate results; a discrepancy in reporting the upper allele occurred in 51% of cases, this reduced to 13.3% and 9.7% when we applied acceptable measurement errors proposed by the American College of Medical Genetics and the Draft European Best Practice Guidelines, respectively. Duplicate results were available for 1250 lower alleles; discrepancies occurred in 40% of cases. Clinically significant discrepancies occurred in 4.0% of cases with a potential unexplained misdiagnosis rate of 0.3%. There was considerable variation in the discrepancy rate among 10 of the countries participating in this study. Out of 1326 samples, 348 were re-analysed by an accredited diagnostic laboratory, based in Germany, with concordance rates of 93% and 94% for the upper and lower alleles, respectively. This became 100% if the acceptable measurement errors were applied. The central laboratory correctly reported allele sizes for six standard reference samples, blind to the known result. Our study differs from external quality assessment (EQA) schemes in that these are duplicate results obtained from a large sample of patients across the whole diagnostic range. We strongly recommend that laboratories state an error rate for their measurement on the report, participate in EQA schemes and use reference materials regularly to adjust their own internal standards.

Many industries, including leather industry, are faced with high expenditure for solid organic waste treatment and disposal.Organic biopolymers represent a source of raw material for agriculture, because the composition of protean wastes provides enough elements to improve composition and rehabilitation of degraded soils.The main target of this scientific paper is investigating the development possibilities for various multicompound systems of biodegradable polymers and studying the effects of these complex products on the structure and chemical and physical characteristics of degraded or contaminated soils (having a poor level of organic matter or submitted to a strong erosion process). All treatments applied to wastes aim at substantially reducing environmental pollution. Complex characteristics of protean wastes from the leather industry are approached by accurately determining waste hide chemical composition and various possibilities of recovery and recycling using biotechnologies The novelty resides in the theoretically-based practical indications regarding the rational application of complex polymeric products - biofertilizers - on various types of soil (sandy, salty, eroded, dumps etc.) depending on the requirements of soil remediation and nutrition specific to agricultural plants. Abstract

In the present paper, we share the results of DNA investigations to determine polymorphism of the PrP locus, carried out in an ovine nucleus of Turcana breed, Hateg ecotype, in which scruple has been diagnosed. The PrP locus is polymorph with known variability at codon 136, 154, 171, which are associated with different sensibility in experimental and natural spongiform encephalopaties. Generally, the possible combinations of the 5 amino acids encoded by the 3 different codons will determine the existence of 15 possible genotypes. Biological samples (blood) were collected from 123 males (Tsurcana breed, Hateg ecotype) from herd in Hunedoara County, where scrapie was diagnosed post-mortem by the veterinary authorities. The samples were processed to reveal polymorphism in codons 136, 154 si 171, in a 3130x1 Genetic Analyzer, Applied Biosystem, as described earlier (Coşier et al., 2008). Due to the genetic determination of susceptibility to scruple and other forms of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) in sheep breeding to the less susceptible prion protein (PrP) genotype ARR/ARR was advanced within EU. Table 1 presents the allele frequency calculated at the PrP locus in the analyzed population. The results obtained indicate the high proportion (8.94%) of the allele which confers minimum resistance to scrapie (VRQ) and a relatively low frequency of the allele which confers increased resistance-ARR (34.15%) as compared to other breeds (Suffolk-52.4%; Coburg Fox-50.2%, Rhoen-50.12%), which accounts for the occurrence of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy in this nucleus. Abstract

The present study present the results of associations between Pit 1 polymorphism and the milk yield in Romanian Simmental and Maramures Brown breeds. Pit-1 has been identified as a pituitary-specific transcription factor that regulates the expression of growth hormone (GH) and prolactin (PRL) genes in the anterior pituitary gland. The candidate gene approach can be successful, but first genes must be identified in the species of interest and correlated to the traits of interest. These methods utilize a more scientific process, which will hopefully improve the selection process. The genetic structure at the Pit 1 locus in Romanian Simmental and Maramures Brown breeds has been described previously. The chi-square test was used to verify the significance of differences in genotypic and allelic frequencies between different breeds and the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (Coşier et al., 2006; 2007; 2008). The technique used for polymorphism detection in a 1355 pb fragment (corresponding to an intron flanking by exons 5 and 6) was PCR-RFLP/HinfI. The DNA was obtained from unrelated Romanian Simmental cattle (N=76) and Maramures Brown cattle (N=50) and the normal milk productions (first lactation at EM) were obtained from County Offices for Reproductions and Animal Selection. The database from the UARZ unites from the aimed counties were collected, processed and statistically interpreted. In the Romanian Simmental breed, genotype AA was associated with higher milk production (X = 6095,28±188.77), by 332.74±149.03 kg milk higher than AB genotype (n.s) and by 726.23±102.01 kg than BB genotype (**).In the Maramures Brown breed the same evolution is found in the genotype ~ dairy production relation, with recorded values of XAA= 4095.18±142.65; XAB=3723,29±103.29; XBB=3250 ±69,71 kg milk. The milk production in Maramures Brown breed for AB genotype compare to BB was statistically significant (***) but the difference was higher than in Romanian Simmental breed (AB vs BB - n.s). 29. Phytochemical Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles and Their Antimicrobial Investigation on Cotton and Wool Textiles.

Abstract

The use of bio-based reagents for silver nanoparticle (AgNP) production has gained much attention among researchers as it has paved the way for environmentally friendly approaches at low cost for synthesizing nanomaterials while maintaining their properties. In this study, Stellaria media aqueous extract was used for silver nanoparticle phyto-synthesis, and the resulting treatment was applied to textile fabrics to test its antimicrobial properties against bacteria and fungi strains. The chromatic effect was also established by determining the L*a*b* parameters. For optimizing the synthesis, different ratios of extract to silver precursor were tested using UV-Vis spectroscopy to observe the SPR-specific band. Moreover, the AgNP dispersions were tested for their antioxidant properties using chemiluminescence and TEAC methods, and the phenolic content was evaluated by the Folin-Ciocâlteu method. For the optimal ratio, values of average size, 50.11 ± 3.25 nm, zeta potential, -27.10 ± 2.16 mV, and polydispersity index, 0.209, were obtained via the DLS technique and zeta potential measurements. AgNPs were further characterized by EDX and XRD techniques to confirm their formation and by microscopic techniques to evaluate their morphology. TEM measurements revealed cvasi-spherical particles with sizes in the range of 10-30 nm, while SEM images confirmed their uniform distribution on the textile fiber surface.

30. Novel Green Crosslinked Salecan Hydrogels and Preliminary Investigation of Their Use in 3D Printing.

Abstract

Salecan, a kind of polysaccharide, is produced by the Agrobacterium ZX09 salt tolerant strain. In this study, green crosslinked citric acid-salecan hydrogels are explored as novel materials with a high potential for use in regenerative medicine. The impact of salecan and citric acid on the final crosslinked hydrogels was intensively studied and estimated in terms of the whole physicochemical properties and antimicrobial activity. FTIR spectra demonstrated the successful green crosslinking of salecan through its esterification with citric acid where the formation of strong covalent bonds collaboratively helped to stabilize the entire hydrogel systems in a wet state. Hydrogels presented a microporous morphology, good swelling capacity, pH responsiveness, great mechanical stability under stress conditions and good antibacterial activity, all related to the concentration of the biopolymers used in the synthesis step. Additionally, salecan hydrogels were preliminary investigated as printing inks. Thanks to their excellent rheological behavior, we optimized the citrate-salecan hydrogel inks and printing parameters to render 3D constructs with great printing fidelity and integrity. The novel synthesized salecan green crosslinked hydrogels enriches the family of salecan-derived hydrogels. Moreover, this work not only expands the application of salecan hydrogels in various fields, but also provides a new potential option of designing salecan-based 3D printed scaffolds for customized regenerative medicine.

31. Novel Nanocomposite Hydrogels Based on Crosslinked Microbial Polysaccharide as Potential Bioactive Wound Dressings.

Abstract

A multitude of dressings have been developed to promote wound repair, such as membranes, foams, hydrocolloids and hydrogels. In this study, a crosslinked polysaccharide hydrogel was mixed with a bioactive ingredient to synthesize a novel nanocomposite material to be used in wound healing. Variation of the ratio between hydrogel components was followed and its effect was analyzed in regard to swelling, degradation rate and thermo-mechanical behavior. The resulting crosslinked structures were characterized by FTIR and microscopy analyses. The antimicrobial activity of the crosslinked hydrogels loaded with bioactive agent was evaluated using two bacterial strains (Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia Coli). All the results showed that the new synthesized biopolymer nanocomposites have adequate properties to be used as antibacterial wound dressings.

Abstract

Cities have grown in development and sophistication throughout human history. Smart cities are the current incarnation of this process, with increased complexity and social importance. This complexity has come to involve significant digital components and has thus come to raise the associated cybersecurity concerns. Major security relevant events can cascade into the connected systems making up a smart city, causing significant disruption of function and economic damage. The present paper aims to survey the landscape of scientific publication related to cybersecurity-related issues in relation to smart cities. Relevant papers were selected based on the number of citations and the quality of the publishing journal as a proxy indicator for scientific relevance. Cybersecurity will be shown to be reflected in the selected literature as an extremely relevant concern in the operation of smart cities. Generally, cybersecurity is implemented in actual cities through the concerted application of both mature existing technologies and emerging new approaches.

Abstract

Protected wetlands such as deltas, lakes or rivers provide a sanctuary for many endangered species. In order to protect these areas from illegal human interventions, it is necessary to monitor the unauthorized entrance of motor boats. In order to mitigate such an impact, we have developed a network of floating beacons for underwater acoustic monitoring, using LoRa communication modules operating at 433 MHz. Such beacons should be equipped with compact antennas. In this paper, we use a genetic algorithm approach to design the compact, monopole antennas required for the beacons; size constraints would apply not only to the radiating element but also to the ground plane. Although the antenna input is unbalanced, such a small ground plane may yield common mode currents on the antenna feeder, which distort the radiation pattern of the antenna. In order to investigate the effect of the common mode currents, we developed a distance averaging method, while, for characterizing the antenna, we used a single-antenna method. For the experimental validation of the system in real conditions, a continuous monitoring of the lake was carried out. During the monitoring, multiple events generated by incursions of motor boats were successfully detected and recorded.

Abstract

Background: The relationship between cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers and the clinical features of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) has been inconclusive. We aimed to evaluate CSF biomarkers reflecting Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related amyloid β (Aβ) aggregation, tau pathology, neuroinflammation and axonal degeneration in relation to the clinical features of pre- and post-shunt surgery in iNPH patients., Methods: Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores and gait velocity were evaluated pre- and postoperatively in cohorts of 65 Finnish (FIN) and 82 Swedish (SWE) iNPH patients. Lumbar CSF samples were obtained prior to shunt surgery and analysed for soluble amyloid precursor protein alpha (sAPPα) and beta (sAPPβ); amyloid-β isoforms of 42, 40 and 38 (Aβ 42 , Aβ 40 , Aβ 38 ); total tau (T-tau); phosphorylated tau (P-tau 181 ); neurofilament light (NfL) and monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP1)., Results: Preoperative patient characteristics showed no significant differences between patients in the FIN and SWE cohorts. Patients in both cohorts had significantly improved gait velocity after shunt surgery (p < 0.0001). Low CSF T-tau and absence of apolipoprotein E ε4 predicted over 20% gait improvement postoperatively (p = 0.043 and p = 0.008). Preoperative CSF T-tau, P-tau 181 and NfL correlated negatively with MMSE scores both pre- (p < 0.01) and post-surgery (p < 0.01). Furthermore, T-tau, NfL and Aβ 42 correlated with MMSE outcomes (p < 0.05). Low preoperative CSF P-tau 181 (p = 0.001) and T-tau with NfL (p < 0.001 and p = 0.049) best predicted pre- and postoperative MMSE scores greater than or equal to 26., Conclusions: CSF biomarkers of neurodegeneration appeared to correlate with pre- and postoperative cognition, providing a window into neuropathological processes. In addition, preoperative CSF neurodegeneration biomarkers may have potential in the prediction of gait and cognitive outcomes after shunt surgery., (© 2022. The Author(s).)

35. Predictive Value of Ambulatory Objective Movement Measurement for Outcomes of Levodopa/Carbidopa Intestinal Gel Infusion.

Abstract

Patients with Parkinson's disease that may benefit from device-assisted therapy can be identified with guidelines like Navigate PD. The decision to offer advanced treatment and the choice of treatment modality are, however, not straightforward, and some patients respond less favorably to a chosen therapy. Measurements with the Parkinson Kinetigraph (PKG) can detect motor fluctuations and could therefore predict patients that respond better or worse to intestinal levodopa/carbidopa gel infusion (LCIG). In a retrospective analysis of 45 patients that had been selected to start LCIG between 2014 and 2020, the effects of baseline PKG and clinical characteristic on the outcome were determined with ordinal regression. Although all patients had been found to have handicapping medication-related symptom fluctuations, patients without clear objective off fluctuations in the baseline PKG had low odds ratio for success. Lower odds for success were also found with increasing age, whereas gender, medication intensity and baseline PKG summary scores (median bradykinesia and dyskinesia scores, fluctuation dyskinesia score and percent time with tremor) had no significant effect. Absence of easily identified off-periods in the PKG has a negative prognostic value for the effect of LCIG and could prompt noninvasive infusion evaluation before surgery.

Abstract

The fabrication of collagen-based biomaterials for skin regeneration offers various challenges for tissue engineers. The purpose of this study was to obtain a novel series of composite biomaterials based on collagen and several types of clays. In order to investigate the influence of clay type on drug release behavior, the obtained collagen-based composite materials were further loaded with gentamicin. Physiochemical and biological analyses were performed to analyze the obtained nanocomposite materials after nanoclay embedding. Infrared spectra confirmed the inclusion of clay in the collagen polymeric matrix without any denaturation of triple helical conformation. All the composite samples revealed a slight change in the 2-theta values pointing toward a homogenous distribution of clay layers inside the collagen matrix with the obtaining of mainly intercalated collagen-clay structures, according X-ray diffraction analyses. The porosity of collagen/clay composite biomaterials varied depending on clay nanoparticles sort. Thermo-mechanical analyses indicated enhanced thermal and mechanical features for collagen composites as compared with neat type II collagen matrix. Biodegradation findings were supported by swelling studies, which indicated a more crosslinked structure due additional H bonding brought on by nanoclays. The biology tests demonstrated the influence of clay type on cellular viability but also on the antimicrobial behavior of composite scaffolds. All nanocomposite samples presented a delayed gentamicin release when compared with the collagen-gentamicin sample. The obtained results highlighted the importance of clay type selection as this affects the performances of the collagen-based composites as promising biomaterials for future applications in the biomedical field.

Abstract

Blood biochemistry parameters are valuable tools for monitoring fish health. Their baseline values are still undefined for a multitude of farmed fish species. In this study, changes in the blood profile of rainbow trout females ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ) from three farms were investigated using different biomarkers during the summer season. In the given context, the main water physicochemical parameters were investigated and twelve biochemical parameters were measured from blood samples of rainbow trout reared in the Fiad, Șoimul de Jos, and Strâmba farms. We selected these farms because the genetic background of the rainbow trout is the same, with all studied specimens coming from the Fiad farm, which has an incubation station. Forty-five samples were collected monthly (May to August) throughout summer to observe the changes in the blood profile of rainbow trout. Principal component analysis showed a clear separation both among the studied farms and months. Furthermore, significant correlations ( p < 0.05) between the majority of the biochemical parameters were found, indicating that the environmental parameters can influence several blood parameters at the same time. The present study provides several useful norms for assessing the welfare of rainbow trout, indicating that the relationships among different parameters are important factors in interpreting the blood biochemical profiles.

38. Sustainable Rabbit Skin Glue to Produce Bioactive Nanofibers for Nonactive Wound Dressings.

Abstract

This paper assessed the collagen glue (Col) from rabbit skin for use as a raw material in combination with different water-based dispersants of antimicrobial agents such as ZnO NPs, TiO 2 NPs doped with nitrogen and Ag NPs (TiO 2 -N-Ag NPs), and chitosan (CS) for the production of biocompatible and antimicrobial nanofibers. The electrospun nanofibers were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), attenuated total reflectance in conjunction with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FT-IR) analyses and antioxidant activity. The biocompatibility of electrospun nanofibers was investigated on cell lines of mouse fibroblast NCTC ((clone L929) using MTT test assays. Antimicrobial activity was performed against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria and Candida albicans pathogenic fungus. Electrospun antimicrobial nanofibers based on collagen glue achieved reduction in the number of viable microorganisms against both fungi and bacteria and exhibited multiple inhibitory actions of fungal and bacterial strains. The electrospun nanofibers showed average dimension sizes in the range of 30-160 nm. The results indicated that both Col/TiO 2 -N-Ag NPs and Col/CS formulations are suitable for cell proliferation and may be useful for producing of nonactive wound dressings.

39. Bioactive Properties of Nanofibres Based on Concentrated Collagen Hydrolysate Loaded with Thyme and Oregano Essential Oils.

Abstract

This research aimed to obtain biocompatible and antimicrobial nanofibres based on concentrated collagen hydrolysate loaded with thyme or oregano essential oils as a natural alternative to synthesis products. The essential oils were successfully incorporated using electrospinning process into collagen resulting nanofibres with diameter from 471 nm to 580 nm and porous structure. The presence of essential oils in collagen nanofibre mats was confirmed by Attenuated Total Reflectance -Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-VIS) and antimicrobial activity. Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy analyses allowed evaluating the morphology and constituent elements of the nanofibre networks. Microbiological tests performed against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans showed that the presence of essential oils supplemented the new collagen nanofibres with antimicrobial properties. The biocompatibility of collagen and collagen with essential oils was assessed by in vitro cultivation with NCTC clone 929 of fibroblastic cells and cell viability measurement. The results showed that the collagen and thyme or oregano oil composites have no cytotoxicity up to concentrations of 1000 μg·mL -1 and 500 μg mL -1 , respectively. Optimization of electrospinning parameters has led to the obtaining of new collagen electrospun nanofibre mats loaded with essential oils with potential use for wound dressings, tissue engineering or protective clothing.

Abstract

Objectives: Immunotherapy in addition to antiepileptic drugs can improve seizure freedom rates in autoimmune epilepsy, highlighting the importance of early diagnosis. A diagnosis of autoimmune epilepsy can be supported by presence of serum antibodies to neuronal antigens. We asked how often neuronal antibodies are found in the serum of unselected adult patients with new-onset seizures and whether such testing could improve detection of autoimmune epilepsy., Material and Methods: We included 44 patients over the age of 25 presenting after at least one unprovoked seizure to the Neurology Clinic at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Gothenburg, Sweden. The median time between the first-ever seizure in life and the serum sampling was 50 days (range 22-11,000). Antibody testing in serum was performed according to the manufacturer's instructions. The patients were followed for at least 1 year., Results: Epilepsy could be diagnosed already at the first visit in 21/44 patients (47.7%). Two patients (4.5%) were positive for neuronal antibodies: one against contactin-associated protein 2 (CASPR-2) and one against glutamate acid decarboxylase (GAD). Three patients (6.7%) displayed very weak immunoreactivity that was deemed clinically insignificant. One of the antibody-positive patients had only a single seizure. The other had a focal cortical dysplasia and was seizure-free on levetiracetam. None of the five patients with antibodies or immunoreactivity displayed any feature of autoimmune epilepsy., Conclusions: We conclude that indiscriminate testing in patients presenting to a first seizure clinic with new-onset seizures or epilepsy is unlikely to improve detection of autoimmune epilepsy., (© 2019 The Authors. 41. Cerebrospinal fluid biomarker candidates for parkinsonian disorders.

Abstract

The Parkinsonian disorders are a large group of neurodegenerative diseases including idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) and atypical Parkinsonian disorders (APD), such as multiple system atrophy, progressive supranuclear palsy, corticobasal degeneration, and dementia with Lewy bodies. The etiology of these disorders is not known although it is considered to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors. One of the greatest obstacles for developing efficacious disease-modifying treatment strategies is the lack of biomarkers. Reliable biomarkers are needed for early and accurate diagnosis, to measure disease progression, and response to therapy. In this review several of the most promising cerebrospinal biomarker candidates are discussed. Alpha-synuclein seems to be intimately involved in the pathogenesis of synucleinopathies and its levels can be measured in the cerebrospinal fluid and in plasma. In a similar way, tau protein accumulation seems to be involved in the pathogenesis of tauopathies. Urate, a potent antioxidant, seems to be associated to the risk of developing PD and with its progression. Neurofilament light chain levels are increased in APD compared with PD and healthy controls. The new "omics" techniques are potent tools offering new insights in the patho-etiology of these disorders. Some of the difficulties encountered in developing biomarkers are discussed together with future perspectives.

Abstract

Objectives: To investigate the vitamin D status during winter of a healthy population of hospital employees and to assess the correlation between vitamin D status and risk of infections in the upper respiratory tract., Design: One hundred and ten healthy volunteers answered a questionnaire on their solar exposure habits and vitamin D intake and delivered one blood sample for quantification of vitamin D level (serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentration) during December 2007-January 2008. At the end of the winter we screened for the occurrence of respiratory infections and sought associations with vitamin D status., Setting: Bucharest, Romania, 45°N., Subjects: One hundred and ten healthy hospital employees., Results: Eighty per cent of participants were vitamin D deficient (25(OH)D level below 50 nmol/l). The main determinant of serum 25(OH)D was sun exposure during the summer previous to the study (P = 0·02 in multivariate analysis). Intake of vitamin D, BMI and age played no significant role for the level of 25(OH)D. Overall we found a non-significant negative correlation between 25(OH)D level and new cases of infection (Spearman correlation coefficient of -0·12, P = 0·2)., Conclusions: Vitamin D status is alarmingly poor in active, relatively young women residing in Romania. If our results are reproduced by other investigations, action to improve vitamin D status at the population level is necessary. We were not able to show a statistically significant relationship between vitamin D status and infection risk in our material.

Abstract

Cranial subdural empyema (SDE), a localized septic intracranial collection, occurs mostly as a complication of sinusitis, otitis or mastoiditis. Although relatively rare, SDE requires an increased attention for early recognition, cerebral imagery being mandatory in any suspected case. Any delay in treatment can lead to coma with a fatal outcome. The authors report the case of a young boy, who developed a severe, important cerebral edema, thin subdural collection with minimal displacement of the median line. Repeated cerebral MRI showed an enlarged subdural collection with higher median line shift and imposed rapid surgical intervention. The collection proved to be empyema. Other findings on MRI are pansinusitis, mild mastoiditis and transverse sinus thromboflebitis. The recovery was accompanied by the need for long course of antibiotherapy, secondary epilepsy treatment and kinetotherapy for hemiparesis. The patient also developed intracerebral cysts expanding the brain through the postoperative cranial defect which later needed surgical intervention, for both neurological and esthetic improvement. The management of the case implied strong interdisciplinary collaboration between infectionist, neurologist, neurosurgeon, microbiologist and imagist.

Abstract

This article focuses on biochemical markers that may be used in the diagnostics of Parkinson's disease and associated disorders, and to identify early cases and stratify patients into subgroups. We present an updated account of some currently available candidate fluid biomarkers, and discuss their diagnostic performance and limitations. We also discuss some of the general problems with Parkinson's disease biomarkers and possible ways of moving forward. It may be concluded that a diagnostically useful fluid biomarker for Parkinson's disease is yet to be identified. However, some interesting candidates exist and may prove useful in the future, alone or when analyzed together in patterns.

Pramipexole is a non-ergot dopamine agonist shown to be efficacious in the treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD). This review addresses the literature concerning pramipexole's efficacy in treating motor and non-motor symptoms in PD, its impact on the development of dyskinesias and response fluctuations, the issue of neuroprotection, and the risk for developing adverse events such as increased somnolence, attacks of sudden onset of sleep, cardiac valvulopathy and impulse control disturbances.
