The downtown area of the city of Coimbra, Portugal, is at low altitude and has historically suffered floods that have caused serious economic losses. The present research proposes a mobile augmented reality (MAR) application aimed at visualising the effect of possible scenarios of flooding in an area of higher risk in the city. A realistic 3D model of the city was created, using data extracted with BLosm and processed through Blender, followed by its integration into Unity with Vuforia for AR visualisation. The methodology encompasses the extraction and simplification of 3D models, mapping real-world coordinates in Unity, analysing several datasets, obtaining a model through regression and implementing a workflow to manage interactions between various Unity objects. The MAR application enables users to visualise potential flood impacts on buildings, utilising colour-coded indicators to represent different levels of water contact. The system's efficacy was evaluated by simulating various use-case scenarios, demonstrating the application's capability to provide real-time, interactive flood risk assessments. This text seeks to relate Fernando Távora’s urban design of Sansão Square, in Coimbra, with the social, cultural and material conditions that surrounded it and, above all, with some particular characteristics of Távora’s mindset regarding his own design practice. On examining the process, it becomes abundantly clear that the relationship between the developer, the supervisors, the architect and the builder was far from balanced. Fernando Távora submitted the preliminary project for approval in April 1993. From then until construction was completed, by the end of 1997, a myriad of problems arose during the natural development of the project: from delays in formalising the contract, to successive disagreements over the choices of materials, or even the attempt to include different elements from the approved project. Without any kind of concessions to the traditionalist way, Távora sets out on the 8 de Maio Square project — one of his dearest, in his own words — with full awareness that historical reposition is not something to be searched for, under the dust of a thousand circumstances, it is not something flexible that could be adapted to the occasion, under risk of losing its tie to the truth. Finally, we intend to reflect on the meaning of time and space limits in design practice and in the final result of architecture. The duration of a project, of a work, time itself, is not, never has been and never can be a condition for inclusion or exclusion in any category.

The rapid process of urbanization has caused drastic changes in land use in urban spaces. As a result, there is an increase in temperatures inside cities (urban heat island). Thus, one of the best solutions to mitigate this increase in temperatures is the implementation of green and blue spaces, as these are of great importance in the reduction of temperatures and in the quality of life of the citizens. It is in this sense that this article is developed, to understand the contribution of green and blue spaces to sustainable urban planning and resilience to climate change. Using data loggers, temperature data was collected to compare three different seasons of the year (winter, spring and summer), and also three times of the day (morning, afternoon and night). For this, four green spaces in the city of Coimbra were selected, namely, Parque Verde do Mondego (left and right bank), Parque Dr. Manuel Braga and Parque da Canção, and also on the Mondego River. Vegetation is found to play a role in mitigating the urban climate, with varying temperatures observed in green spaces (generally cooler) and spaces with limited vegetation, such as Parque da Canção. In the river, it is verified, at various times of the day, the influence of the surrounding infrastructure (concrete wall), causing the downstream sector to register higher temperatures than upstream. A Universidade de Coimbra foi, na época moderna, uma instituição poliédrica. A historiografia tem-nos revelado a sua função de entidade produtora de conhecimento e de formação de letrados que desempenharam cargos no reino e no império. Foi também um senhorio territorial, que constituiu a base material do seu financiamento, e um senhorio jurisdicional dotado de várias prerrogativas que lhe conferiam poder real e simbólico. Dotada da jurisdição senhorial intermédia, usufruía da prerrogativa de isenção de correição, do apuramento das eleições das justiças concelhias que era feito pelo Reitor ou pelo ouvidor e do conhecimento de apelações e agravos. A Universidade era ainda detentora de vários privilégios, destacando-se o foro privativo que libertava das justiças régias os membros da corporação universitária, assim como muitas pessoas que com ela interagiam. Numa análise de longa duração (1290-1835) apreendem-se as fases de estruturação e consolidação do sistema senhorial, que coincidem com períodos de reforma nos estudos, bem como as dificuldades de a instituição obter os recursos humanos e materiais adequados para controlar um território senhorial geograficamente disperso e habitado por enfiteutas e paroquianos que não se deixavam apanhar nas malhas das justiças privativas senhoriais Neste estudo, analisamos a Universidade de Coimbra na sua vertente senhorial no sentido de identificar a natureza, proveniência e forma de gestão das suas fontes de financiamento e apuramos alguns dos constrangimentos dos Estudos provenientes da impossibilidade de afetar os recursos suficientes às atividades específicas da Academia.

This research focuses on examining how the pursuit of economic growth can contribute to urban shrinkage. In contrast to the prevalent definition of urban shrinkage that links population loss to insufficient levels of economic growth, this study examines the case of Coimbra, Portugal, where something different is happening. We hypothesise that Coimbra experiences population loss due to urban policies that promote economic growth through housing speculation. We conclude that the hypothesis is valid using semi-structured interviews and document analysis as data collection methods. The identified phenomenon disproportionately affects younger and vulnerable residents, forcing them to relocate due to unaffordable housing options. However, it benefits the local authority and national government, which collaborate with global economic powers that invest in real estate to accumulate capital. The conformist and legalistic-bureaucratic nature of the Portuguese planning system, evident in Coimbra’s local authority, exacerbates the problem. We emphasise the potentially transformative impact of economic degrowth thinking on housing policy. The implications of this research question the validity of mainstream economic theory as commonly applied to urban planning.

O presente texto, focando a temática das alcaidarias medievais em Portugal, propõe-se investigar tanto o que eram, como alguns aspetos da sua organização e do seu funcionamento. Partindo da análise de documentação relativa a Coimbra, na primeira metade do século XIII, reconstitui-se o quadro da organização da defesa das portas, muralhas e torres da cidade do Mondego e da gestão de custos financeiros da sua pretoria ao tempo da conquista de Elvas (1230).

Understanding the thermal effects of different urban patterns that constitute today's urban landscapes is critical to the development of urban resilience to climate change. This article aims to assess the efficiency of urban green spaces in thermal regulation. Through thermography, we explored the interaction between air temperature and the spatial components within these environments. Through comparative analysis involving a UAV, we studied the relationship between air temperatures at varying altitudes and the temperature within tree canopies. The results revealed significant differences in the thermal distribution between impervious urban areas with buildings and green spaces. These findings provide important information for assessing thermal comfort and the efficiency of urban green spaces in mitigating the impact of extreme heat events. During the summer months, green spaces, due to shade and the enhanced absorption of solar radiation by trees, exhibited lower temperatures compared to impervious areas. However, in winter, urban areas displayed higher temperatures, attributable to their heat retention capacity. This study contributes to the existing knowledge base by providing an in-depth examination of the thermal efficiency of urban green spaces across different layers of their lower atmosphere. Our results underscore the crucial role of tree cover in thermal comfort regulation, offering valuable information for sustainable urban planning. These insights are particularly relevant for the design of more comfortable and resilient environments in response to climatic variations and for the crafting of a tree-planting strategy in Mediterranean climate cities, an area where the impacts of climate change are becoming increasingly apparent. El romance «Yo me estando en Tordesillas», por su carácter trunco y lo enigmático de su desarrollo, ha resultado ser un acertijo desde la publicación del romancero de Durán pues resultaba imposible identificar una «reina de Castilla, infanta de Portugal» que llegó a Coímbra, no pudo entrar en la ciudad y se refugió en un monasterio «que estava en el arrabal». El análisis de la guerra castellano-portuguesa por la sucesión de Fernando I permite identificarlo fácilmente con un episodio del conflicto, el fallido ataque a esta ciudad de 1384, pues sabemos por la crónica de Ayala que su esposa Beatriz, heredera del reino portugués, acompañaba a su marido Juan I de Castilla que reivindicaba para ambos la corona lusa y que, en febrero de este año, Coímbra les cerró las puertas y se alojaron en el monasterio de Santa Clara de Coímbra, en el arrabal de la ciudad.

O estudo faz o ponto relativamente à existência de uma eventual “escola de Coimbra” (séculos XVI-XVIII), de âmbito filosófico, para o que começa por incidir nas produções teóricas – a história – que podem contribuir para o esclarecimento da questão, enumera algumas das linhas dessas produções e da eventual escola – tendências – e enuncia alguns problemas que criam dificuldades à identidade discutida.

This essay analyzes the life of Gonçalves Dias during the period that he was living in Coimbra, through a literary perspective extracted from his own poetry and, mostly, his intimate epistle, followed by biographical criticism. We present a biographic essay demonstrating, specifically, about the way the poet felt and lived Coimbra. Declares that the life he had on the banks of the Mondego was sad, but sadder, he considered, would be to live and die without one name. The city, alma-mater, whom he called, in a correspondence to his best friend, damned and annoyed by poetry, won. So annoyed that he gave us the “Song of Exile” – the greatest expression of nationality in Brazilian romanticism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As a cross-sectoral issue, the promotion of health needs to be addressed across all policies. In Portugal, as more competencies are being transferred to local governments, the integration of health considerations into municipal plans remains a challenge and guidance on how to develop an integrated municipal health strategy is absent. The aim of this study is to describe the conceptual and methodological approach that informed the development of an integrated and multisectoral municipal health strategy in the City of Coimbra. Its design followed a population health approach with a geographic lens, looking at how the population's health outcomes and health determinants were geographically distributed across the municipality, as well as the extent to which policies from multiple sectors can address them. The planning cycle followed an iterative workflow of five actions: assessing, prioritizing, planning, implementing, and monitoring. Following a participatory planning approach, several participatory processes were conducted involving local stakeholders and citizens (e.g., population-based surveys, workshops, Delphi, collaborative sessions) to identify problems, establish priorities, and define measures and actions. The strategic framework for action integrates 94 actions across multisectoral domains of municipal intervention: sustainable mobility and public places, safe and adequate housing, accessible healthcare, social cohesion and participation, education and health literacy, and intersectoral and collaborative leadership. Findings shed light on important aspects that can inform other municipal strategies, such as the adoption of a place-based approach, focused on geographic inequalities, health determinants and stakeholder participation, and the application of a health in all policies framework. Ce dossier thématique, consacré au passage du philosophe Emmanuel Falque par l’Université de Coimbra, à la Faculté des Lettres, dans le cadre de la Journée Internationale d’études philosophiques, intitulée «L’im‑pensable: Aux confins de la phénoménalité», qui a eu lieu le 26 mai 2022, donne encore une fois la parole au philosophe lui‑même, avec des articles et un entretien inédit, en présentant aussi un ensemble d’articles qui font écho à son projet philosophique.

O presente estudo tem como principal objetivo apresentar a análise de registros de passaportes do distrito de Coimbra cujos titulares pretendiam viajar/emigrar para a província brasileira do Rio Grande do Sul entre 1881 e 1889. Apesar da vasta bibliografia existente a respeito da emigração portuguesa para o Brasil nos séculos XIX e XX, ainda são poucos os trabalhos que se centram no Rio Grande do Sul, local onde predomina o estudo das imigrações alemã e italiana. Foram analisados 396 registros de passaporte do Governo Civil de Coimbra, disponíveis no Arquivo da Universidade de Coimbra e no site FamilySearch. As principais conclusões a que foi possível chegar são: uma maioria absoluta de titulares do sexo masculino; a proximidade entre o número de casados e solteiros; o elevado índice de instrução para os parâmetros portugueses da segunda metade do século XIX; uma maioria de trabalhadores do mundo rural e indícios de uma realidade violenta.

Na arte figurativa produzida (ou trazida) para Portugal entre os séculos XIII e XIV, a representação de Santiago encontrou uma expressão mais diversificada e mais abundante nas diversas formas de escultura do que na pintura, onde só conhecemos a sua presença a partir do século XV ou, na ourivesaria, de que não nos chegou qualquer exemplo. Assim, este texto propõe abordar as primeiras representações do apóstolo Tiago Maior na arte portuguesa através de esculturas devocionais (imagens de altar), mas também de relevos, e de como a iconografia do santo acompanhou as variações/ preferências da religiosidade de cada época, bem como os factores políticos dominantes.

Este estudio comienza analizando el paisaje urbano y la composición socioeconómica de la parroquia de São Bartolomeu de Coímbra entre los siglos XII y XV para después centrarse en observar la territorialización de sus derechos parroquiales y la reivindicación, a partir del siglo XIV, del cobro del diezmo en la margen opuesta del río. Se revela así un proceso de ampliación de la jurisdicción parroquial que chocó con los intereses de otras instituciones eclesiásticas de la ciudad. Con ello, se propone una reflexión sobre la relación de esta área urbana con el río, planteándose si en el periodo este fue un factor o un obstáculo para el crecimiento económico, de qué modo y a quién perjudicaría o beneficiaría cada uno de los casos. A través del estudio de la proyección de esta iglesia, en su parroquia y en la ciudad, se buscarán las respuestas a estas cuestiones.

Em 1921 a Imprensa da Universidade de Coimbra editava, em formato monográfico, duas obras incontornáveis para o estudo da cerâmica de época Moderna em Portugal. Algumas palavras a respeito de púcaros de Portugal de Carolina Michaëlis de Vasconcellos e A cerâmica coimbrã no século XVI de Joaquim Martins Teixeira de Carvalho reúnem as primeiras referências documentais à produção cerâmica, desde então, repetidamente citadas nos ensaios dedicados a esta temática. Assinalando os 100 anos destas edições, apresenta-se uma síntese dedicada aos serviços de mesa destinados ao consumo de líquidos ou louças de beber (sobretudo água) em Coimbra durante o século XV e XVI, tendo por base a colecção exumada em escavações arqueológicas realizadas no antigo paço episcopal de Coimbra. Estabelece-se o quadro evolutivo morfo-tipológico regional destas produções que assumem um franco dinamismo a partir dos meados do século XVI.

Apresenta-se o primeiro e para já único contexto conhecido da I Idade do Ferro de Coimbra. Reporta-se a uma intervenção arqueológica de salvaguarda realizada no Largo de D. Dinis, em 2008. Neste local identificou-se um depósito estratigráfico pouco extenso, encerrando espólio cerâmico e restos ósseos humanos e faunísticos. Embora modesto e desgarrado, o conjunto resulta desconcertante pelas questões que levanta quanto à natureza do achado – afigurando-se como um possível depósito fundacional. Para mais, a sua relevância objectiva-se na confirmação da ocupação sidérica antiga da cidade, reunindo-se assim Coimbra às destacadas referências do período orientalizante do Baixo Mondego.

Evidência científica indica que a obesidade é responsável por diversas doenças crónicas, como são exemplo a hipertensão e a diabetes mellitus tipo 2. Recentemente, a literatura tem vindo a chamar a atenção para o facto de indivíduos com obesidade apresentarem risco mais elevado de desenvolver sintomas graves da Covid-19. Ser ativo é visto como medida positiva para prevenir e tratar doenças como hipertensão e diabetes, entre outras. A forma das cidades, a distribuição dos equipamentos e o desenho urbano podem influenciar positivamente (ou negativamente) o modo como as pessoas se deslocam e se relacionam com o ambiente da área de residência, aumentando (ou diminuindo) os níveis de atividade física e, potencialmente, contrariando o sedentarismo. Este estudo, realizado em Coimbra, investigou: i) a associação estatística entre as tipologias de uso do solo e as condições do ambiente físico e construído em que os indivíduos vivem; ii) o papel desempenhado pelas condições ambientais no excesso de peso e obesidade. Foi recolhida informação de 1 117 indivíduos residentes em freguesias urbanas, periurbanas e rurais, entre março e setembro de 2020. Com estes dados foram desenvolvidos modelos de regressão logística binomial, ajustados por sexo e idade. Os resultados permitem concluir que os residentes mais afastados do centro da cidade (áreas periurbanas e rurais) apresentam maior probabilidade de terem excesso de peso, de usarem automóvel, de avaliarem positivamente aspetos relacionados com os serviços urbanos (e.g. espaços públicos de lazer e as áreas verdes urbanas) e a qualidade do ar. Residentes periurbanos que usam transporte público têm menor probabilidade de ter excesso de peso em relação a quem utiliza o automóvel. Identificar ambientes obesogénicos é uma condição fundamental para a construção de políticas públicas que tenham como objetivo a promoção da saúde, a prevenção da doença e a redução das iniquidades.

Quando se perspetiva historicamente o comportamento linguístico de uma sociedade percebemos a importância do teor das palavras e o seu uso intencional como superior manifestação de uma sensibilidade. A retrospetiva histórica é, nesse sentido, essencial para compreendermos não só as transformações ao longo do tempo, mas sobretudo para reconhecer as continuidades que subsistem na linguagem e, assim sendo, nas próprias mentalidades. Os processos judiciais de injúrias e ofensa à moral pública refletem, na sua maioria, situações em que as relações interpessoais estão exasperadas e as palavras ganham, assim, um significado crítico que é entendido pelos envolvidos, pela comunidade e pela lei como um insulto. A análise desta documentação permitir-nos-á identificar, para os finais do século XIX, os mecanismos usuais da afronta pessoal, com o necessário cariz público, através das palavras injuriosas mais comuns, as considerações dos queixosos, que recaem nas noções de honra e perceção perante os outros, as testemunhas e a resolução do juiz. O estudo do significado histórico da linguagem, que funciona aqui como arma e como crime, possibilita a apreensão de um código social comum, sobretudo ao nível da oralidade, que com as devidas diferenças e aproximações é, ainda, compreendido por todos.

O presente estudo pretende analisar as despesas da Câmara Municipal de Coimbra, entre 1762 e 1820. Trata-se de um período de grandes dificuldades para a gestão camarária coimbrã, que levou a algumas alterações significativas na forma de arrecadar as receitas, o que permitiu um crescimento dos gastos. Com recurso a uma metodologia quantitativa e comparativa, aspira-se, com esta investigação, compreender em que medida a composição e a evolução da despesa foi afetada pela evolução da receita. Pretendemos examinar a evolução da despesa e de cada uma das suas categorias individualmente, com o objetivo de apurar: qual era a estrutura das despesas da Câmara Municipal de Coimbra, entre 1762 e 1820; como evoluíram os gastos; identificar as semelhanças e diferenças existentes entre Coimbra e outras câmaras municipais do mesmo período; que continuidades e ruturas se podem traçar com a realidade financeira coimbrã do séc. XVII. O núcleo central de fontes corresponde aos Livros de Receita e Despesa, à guarda do Arquivo Histórico Municipal. Pretendemos que este estudo carreie um importante contributo para a compreensão das finanças municipais nos finais de Antigo Regime.

This paper falls within the scope of cultural tourism studies, focusing on a World Heritage Site and intends to contribute to tourism literature by trying to better understand the differences between the tourists visiting it. A survey was conducted by self-administered questionnaires designed to identify different types of cultural tourists in post-UNESCO Coimbra (Portugal) so as to understand what they look for, the importance they assign to motivational factors, whether they are interested in participatory activities which call for cognitive, intellectual or affective engagement and their degree of satisfaction. A hierarchical cluster analysis was carried out based on age, education, family income, nationality, and length of stay. To perform this analysis of identification of homogeneous groups, Ward's method and the Squared Euclidean distance were used as a measure of similarity. The variables were standardized to avoid bias due to the different scales. The results of this analysis allowed the identification of two groups. Chi-square analyses and Mann-Whitney U tests were also carried out for better characterizing the clusters. Results seem to be useful for destination managers to provide what tourists seek, to enhance their experiences and satisfaction, and strengthen this destination competitiveness and value creation. This is the book of abstracts for the European Conference of Adapted Physical Activity (EUCAPA) 2022. The event is held between the 9th - 11th June 2022 and hosted by the University of Coimbra, Portugal.

Até à sua chegada a Salamanca (1891), Unamuno conhecia muito pouco da cultura portuguesa. Mas já desde esta cidade viaja frequentemente a Portugal, onde consegue numerosos amigos que o encaminham ao descobrimento de um povo (literatura, história, psicologia...) irmão do espanhol. Homem de paixão, Unamuno é subjugado pela história dos funestos amores de D. Pedro e Inês de Castro, história evocada em numerosos ensaios. A esta tragédia estão associadas Coimbra (berço dos amores) e Alcobaça (sepulcro dos amantes), cujas paisagens sensibilizaram profundamente Unamuno.

O presente estudo pretende analisar as receitas próprias da Câmara Municipal de Coimbra, entre 1762 e 1820, através dos Livros de Receita e Despesa, à guarda do Arquivo Histórico Municipal. Trata-se de um período de grandes dificuldades para a gestão camarária coimbrã, que levou à adoção de algumas estratégias e a algumas alterações significativas na forma de arrecadar as receitas. A questão central a que se pretende dar resposta, consiste em averiguar se as dificuldades de financiamento condicionavam o desempenho das suas múltiplas funções. Neste sentido, procura-se apresentar a estrutura dos rendimentos, explicando cada uma das categorias de receita, a forma como eram arrecadadas e a sua evolução ao longo da cronologia; analisar a evolução das receitas, em confronto com a evolução da despesa e dos saldos; identificar as semelhanças e diferenças entre o caso de Coimbra e o de outras câmaras municipais contemporâneas, assinalando características comuns e especificidades locais; numa análise de longa duração, elaboramos uma comparação com as finanças coimbrãs seiscentistas, indicando as continuidades e ruturas na evolução dos rendimentos concelhios. Pretendemos que este estudo carreie, igualmente, um contributo para o conhecimento da conjuntura económica de finais de Antigo Regime.

Baseado nas fontes de visitas pastorais, este estudo analisa a conduta de mulheres acusadas de “devassas do seu corpo” na cidade universitária de Coimbra, tendo como fonte de investigação os livros de visitas e um livro de Extracto de Culpados da cidade de Coimbra (1668-1743), durante a primeira metade do século XVIII. As atividades de visitação oferecem um rico material sobre os comportamentos morais e “pecados públicos”. O objetivo é analisar características e perfis sociais dos envolvidos com as práticas de meretrício, alcoviteirice, consentimento e casas de alcouce.

O presente artigo aborda os homens e mulher que receberam a propriedade dos ofícios de tabelião de notas de Coimbra entre o início do século XVI e os meados do século XVIII. Para este efeito, suportamo-nos essencialmente nas cartas de nomeação, apresentação ou confirmação efetuadas pela Casa de Aveiro e pela Coroa portuguesa e registadas na chancelaria régia. Assim, a informação recolhida permitirá analisar qual o enquadramento legal e como se processou o exercício desta prerrogativa senhorial, observar a transmissão dos ofícios e identificar os seus proprietários.

Iron Age studies are scarce for the city of Coimbra, besides the findings from the Machado Castro Museum, and therefore this intervention has revealed an important heritage collection. The recovered artefacts, which can be associated with the indigenous world, reveal regional parallels with Conimbriga, the Aeminium Forum and Lomba do Canho. There is clear evidence of region-wide homogenisation of pottery morphologies, surface treatments and production processes. A structure dated from the period of the Roman emperor Augustus aligned with the steep natural geological profile, with unobstructed views over the Mondego river, was found in the interior of a medieval defensive wall, making it possible to deconstruct the chronological periods of the locale, which is consistent with an Iron Age occupation, since at least the second century B.C. More importantly, it is necessary to understand the spatial contextualisation of this archaeological site through morphological analysis of the pottery in a local and regional context and comprehend the chronological hiatus and settlement between the archaeological sites located in the estuary mouth, from other sites found upstream along the Mondego river.

La respuesta de las comunidades mozárabes ante la obligatoriedad de adoptar el rito romano durante los siglos XI y XII constituye un interesante fenómeno que ayuda a esclarecer hasta qué punto la antigua liturgia hispano-visigótica formaba parte de la esencia identitaria de esos cristianos arabizados y de qué modo miraron al rito ultrapirenaico. Este trabajo quiere ofrecer una revisión de la literatura generada en torno al tema desde mediados del siglo XX, diferenciando tres escenarios: Portugal (Coímbra y Lisboa), Aragón (Zaragoza y el valle del Ebro) y Toledo. El objetivo que se persigue es el de exponer y evaluar los modelos interpretativos, la recurrencia temática y la caracterización de personajes y grupos. Asimismo, se indican las líneas de investigación abiertas y se sugieren nuevas vías de estudio. The response of the Mozarabic communities with respect to the obligation to adopt the Roman rite during the eleventh and twelfth centuries is an interesting phenomenon which sheds light on the extent to which the ancient Hispano-Visigothic liturgy was part of the essence of the Arabized Christian’s identity and in what way did they conceive the foreign rite. This study proposes a review of the literature produced on this topic from the mid-twentieth century in three different areas: Portugal (Coimbra and Lisbon), Aragon (Zaragoza and the Ebro Valley) and Toledo. Our objective is to present and evaluate the interpretive models, the recurring themes and the characterization of figures and groups. Furthermore, we will enumerate current research areas and propose new themes for future studies.

The work proposed here defends the importance of identity and memo ry expressed in the tr am in the city of Coimbra. The use of a diachronic analysis of its use as a means of transport, aims to demonstrate its tourism potential as (re) creator of landscape, heritage, identity and cultural values. It will be important to identify its symbolic and functional value and discuss the extent to which the tram can be based on a territorial marketing strategy for the city of Coimbra. The tram may be an extremely important heritage in the (re) creation of new tourist territories through the use of representations and multi-sensoriality. Branding is a key element of the process of (re) building the brand of the city of Coimbra and arguing about its synergetic relationship exploring the question of how electric can be seen as an active capital and tourism receiver. Thus, the active capitals of places to position and communicate their attributes can present themselves as strategies at the service of territorial marketing, with electrical being a case in point. D. Sesnando's rule over a vast territory, between the rivers Mondego and Douro (1064-1091), entailed a rupture with the previous framework of territorial management, in which a considerable part of this land was nominally bound to Muslim authorities. After the definitive conquest of Coimbra, there was a period of intense change in the landscape and of enhancement of humanized geography, in which the alvazil Sesnando moved more intensely. This article seeks to address the reality of construction and the arts during D. Sesnando's time. Based on documental sources that mention various types of heritage, the first part of the paper offered an analysis of the territory. It also included an introduction to the city of Coimbra, between the Muslim invasion of 711 and the eve of the 1064 conquest.
