Abstract

ABSTRACTFluvial and coastal landforms are indicative of landscape river delta evolution over time and provide clues for understanding coastal adjustments to sea-level and fluvial dynamics fluctuations, tectonic displacements, and extreme waves. We have mapped the surface and sub-surface footprints of fluvial and coastal geomorphological features in the Aceh River delta, northern Sumatra, using imagery dataset, vertical facies logging and helicopter electromagnetic surveys. The result is a geomorphological map at the scale of 1:75.000 which outlines the main features of the deltaic plain, including rivers, tidal and buried channels, fluvial levees, beach ridges, swales, tidal flats and lagoons. We compare their spatial distribution to the geometry of buried sediment bodies, revealed by boreholes and resistivity maps. Buried channel belts and floodplain deposits document the former locations of the distributary channels of the Aceh River. Coastal-parallel beach ridges evidence 7–8 km of asymmetric delta progradation since the mid-Holocene sea-level high stand.

Abstract

Abstract A geomorphological survey immediately west of the Minoan town of Malia (Crete) shows that a tsunami resulting from the Bronze Age Santorini eruption reached the outskirts of the Palatial center. Sediment cores testify a unique erosional event during the Late Minoan period, followed locally by a high energy sand unit comprising marine fauna. This confirms that a tsunami impacted northern Crete and caused an inundation up to 400 m inland at Malia. We obtained a radiocarbon range of 1744–1544 BCE for the secure pre-tsunami context and an interval 1509–1430 BCE for the post-event layer. Examination of tsunami deposits was used to constrain run-up not exceeding 8 m asl. The results open the field for new research on the Bronze Age Santorini tsunami regarding both impact and consequences for the Minoan civilization.

Abstract

On 3 September 2017, as cyclone Irma approaches Saint-Martin, the rectorate postponed sine die the school start for 8 000 students registered in public schools and 900 national education staff. As the cyclone damaged a majority of buildings and infrastructure (including schools), some of the island's pupils did not attend school for two months. In this work, we propose to consider the stories of adolescents as data likely to feed the post-disaster feedback. Our goal is to understand the experiences of adolescents and to characterize the actions they carried out in the post-crisis period. If their role is recognized, then their actions and implementation contexts need to be clarified.

Abstract

Whereas the geomorphic effects of in-channel mining have been widely documented, very few studies have focused on recovery trajectories after mining ended. This paper describes and quantifies the channel adjustment of extended and over-widened mining pits located in a low energy gravel-bed river, and identifies the factors that control their recovery rate. The study was based on aerial photographs and LiDAR analysis, grain-size sampling, bedload computation and geophysical measurements made during ground penetrating radar (GPR) and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) surveys. We describe the spatio-temporal changes in the morphology of former pits as well as the current surficial longitudinal grain-size pattern in pits and in neighbouring upstream and downstream reaches. Our results show a wide range of geomorphic readjustments. Between 23 and 47 yr after the end of mining, the mining reaches have still not yet fully recovered. The planimetric recovery rate is closely correlated with the ratio of the volume deposited in the pits to their original volume. Finally, the infilled material is only partly composed of bedload and the mainly sandy fine sediments play a primary role in the recovery process. The abundance of sand, controlled by the lithology of the watershed, explains the unexpectedly high recovery rates of some pits despite the low energy of the river.

Abstract

One of the most powerful eruptions of the Holocene, known as the Samalas eruption, had a VEI of 7 and took place on Lombok, eastern Indonesia in 1257 CE. Thick tephra fall covered the entire island, and pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) up to 50 m thick buried almost half of Lombok. Until now, there has been no detailed study of the geomorphological evolution of Lombok related to this eruption, especially for the eastern part of Lombok. The main goal of this paper is therefore to reconstruct the paleo-topography on the eastern part of Lombok before the eruption of the Samalas volcano in 1257 CE, and to analyse the subsequent landscape evolution following this eruption. Data were collected from more than 1300 points in order to gather geomorphological, geological, and geochemical information for the eastern part of Lombok over the last millennium. Data were obtained from wells (which are widespread in the studied area), natural outcrops (mainly cliffs along the shoreline and the rivers), and human-made outcrops in quarries, as well as from the two-dimensional resistivity profiling (Dipole-dipole array) carried out on eastern Lombok in 2016 and 2017. We estimate that 4435 ± 5.5 × 106 m3 of pumice-rich PDC, over a surface of 171 km2, buried the eastern part of Lombok in the aftermath of the 1257 CE eruption, and as a result of this rapid pumice-rich PDC deposition there has been some aggradation of the shoreline at some points, resulting in most of the pre-1257 coral reef being buried. After several intense rainfall events, the deposited volcanic material was probably eroded during the first decades following the 1257 CE eruption by mountain streams, producing lahars. We estimate that the remaining volume of pumice-rich PDC deposits following this erosion is 625 ± 5.5 × 106 m3 over a surface of 89 km2, which is equivalent to 14% of the initial volume.

Abstract

International audience; Climatic oscillations occurring during the Pleniglacial and Lateglacial periods are generally associated with several changes in fluvial morphology and processes. This study investigated two reaches of the Cher River basin (Noyers-sur-Cher and Thénioux) regarding morphological adjustments during the Lateglacial period and the early Holocene. Transitions from the Pleniglacial to the Lateglacial and from the Lateglacial to the early Holocene (ca. 14,700–11,500 cal. BP) are considered as interesting study cases because it consists of rapid and abrupt climate oscillations generally clearly recorded in current floodplains. The sites studied are located in the Cher River floodplain, which is one of the main tributaries of the Loire River. Several investigations have been conducted in the main valley, but few of them specifically focused on geomorphological evolutions of medium-sized catchments such as tributaries of the Loire River. Therefore, we examined this specific period through investigations recently conducted in the middle valley of the Cher River. This study aimed to (1) provide a geomorphological approach to fluvial adjustments during the Lateglacial from cases located in lowland areas of a medium-sized basin and (2) analyse the spatio-temporal variability of fluvial responses. Assessment of geomorphological trajectories of the two reaches studied highlights that fluvial metamorphosis occurring during the Lateglacial and early Holocene seems to be characterised by lateral readjustments and a low signal of morphological instability (shallow incision and aggradation processes, slow and progressive change in channel morphology). This observation is enhanced by the comparison with known geomorphological evolution patterns of adjacent basins. The intrinsic components of the Cher basin such as slope and valley width were considered as explanatory factors for the lack of morphogenetic processes. In addition, the geographical location of the reaches studied may also have led to a moderated expression of climate forcing. Indeed, the elevation as well as the north– south and east–west gradients may contribute to the low level of geomorphological adjustments in response to these climatic oscillations. This gradient could also have support this the fluvial response because of the weakly developed loess cover, which may have limited the fine sediment supply and the aggradation of the valley bottom.

Abstract

Les nombreuses vallées qui découpent les flancs du Merapi sont caractérisées par des évolutions rapides, liées directement comme indirectement à l’activité du volcan. Dans une section de la rivière Gendol, située entre 6 et 11 km du sommet du volcan, les coulées et déferlantes pyroclastiques d’octobre et novembre 2010 ont tout d’abord comblé la vallée sur plusieurs dizaines de mètres d’épaisseur. Puis les lahars et l’érosion, induite par l’industrie d’extraction, ont contribué à l’incision et à l'élargissement du lit dans les dépôts pyroclastiques de 2010 ainsi que dans le substratum pré-éruptif. Cet espace, situé à l’amont de la Gendol, a fait l’objet d’un suivi topographique entre septembre 2010, soit quelques mois avant l’éruption, et avril 2014, 41 mois après celle-ci. Une analyse diachronique de la morphologie de la vallée à trois dates différentes a été permise par la conception de deux MNT, le premier en septembre 2010 construit par photogrammétrie Sfm, le second en août 2012 à partir de données LiDAR. Enfin, une étude de terrain effectuée en avril 2014 a permis de mettre à jour et compléter cette reconstitution. Cette étude met en évidence l’érosion verticale et latérale par les lahars, accentuée par la remontée progressive des zones d’extraction qui constituent le principal agent morphogène dans la vallée de la Gendol, mais également dans de nombreuses autres vallées du Merapi où les dépôts sont présents. The Merapi is an active stratovolcano in Central Java with a dense network of rivers located at the bottom of deep radial valleys, which rapidly evolves during and in the aftermath of the regular eruptions. In the wake of the 2010 eruption, the authors have monitored the evolution of a section of the Gendol Valley between 6 and 11 km to the summit of the volcano. In this reach, the pyroclastic density currents of October to November 2010 filled the valley with several tens of meters thick deposits, before being eroded by lahars and anthropic extraction in the quarries located at the bottom of the valley. The combination of these two processes has deepened and widened the valleys, cutting the 2010 pyroclastic-flow deposits and the pre-eruption material. The present contribution provides a quantitative analysis of the erosion in the Gendol valley. The results were acquired through a diachronic analysis of topographic data between 2010 – prior to the eruption – and April 2014. For this purpose, three topographical datasets were created: 2 DEMs were produced using Structure-from-Motion and LiDAR for respectively September 2010 and August 2012; and one field-survey was conducted in April 2014 with a handheld laser range-finder. The results have highlighted that lahars have heavily eroded vertically and laterally the valley, while the upstream progression of extraction sites locally increased erosion. Extractions are the main morphogen agent in the Gendolvalley but also in many other valleys of Merapi where deposits are present.

Abstract

L’article présente le suivi hydromorphologique de la première phase d’arasement du barrage hydroélectrique de Pierre Glissotte (7,29 m de hauteur). Construit sur l’Yonne supérieure (Morvan) dans les années 1920, l’ouvrage représentait un obstacle aux continuités biologique et sédimentaire et sa retenue (~40 000 m³) était presque entièrement comblée par des sédiments. L’objectif est de comprendre les modalités et rythmes d’ajustement hydromorphologique de l’Yonne suite au démantèlement des 3 m supérieurs du barrage. Les diverses méthodes utilisées (relevés topographiques, photogrammétrie SfM, marquages RFID, suivis hydrologiques) ont permis de caractériser l’évolution rapide de l’ancienne retenue (incision de 1,20 à 4 m, formation puis élargissement d’un chenal, augmentation du D50, etc.). Malgré de faibles débits, la remobilisation des sables et limons comblant l’ancien réservoir a débuté dès la vidange. La charge grossière (graviers, cailloux, galets), piégée en amont et queue de retenue, a aussi été rapidement réintroduite dans le système, avec des vitesses d’avancée des traceurs RFID mobilisés comprises entre 138 et 347 m/an les trois premiers mois, là aussi sans épisode hydrologique remarquable. Au bout de 9 mois, près de 23 % du volume de sédiments contenu dans le réservoir avait été érodé (9 600 m³), à la faveur d’une faible cohésion des dépôts, d’un charriage actif sur l’Yonne et de plusieurs épisodes de crues. En aval du barrage, si les écoulements très concentrés des premières semaines ont déposé jusqu’à 0,37 m d’épaisseur de sédiments fins dans certaines zones, aucun exhaussement du lit n’a pu être constaté 15 mois plus tard. The article focuses on the hydromorphological monitoring of the first stage of the removal of the Pierre Glissotte hydroelectric dam (7.29 m high) located on the upper Yonne River (Morvan massif). The dam, built in the 1920s, acted as an obstacle for biological and sediment continuity and the reservoir (~40,000 m3) was almost completely filled with sediment. Monitoring was undertaken to understand how the Yonne River has adjusted geomorphologically from the beginning of the dam demolition (3 meters removed). Various methods were used (topographical surveys, SFM photogrammetry, RFID tracking, hydrological monitoring) and they enabled the rapid evolution of the former reservoir to be characterized (incision from 1.20 m to 4 m, channel widening, D50 coarsening, etc.). Sand and silt filling the reservoir started to be evacuated as soon as the dewatering began, during low flows. Coarse material (granules, pebbles and cobbles), placed in the upper part of the reservoir, was also moved quickly, with an average velocity between 138 and 347 m.y‑¹for the mobilized RFID tracers during the first three months, without any important hydrological event. After 9 months, about 23% of the reservoir sediment fill was eroded (9,600 m3). Erosion was favoured by the poor cohesiveness of the deposits, active bedload transport on the Yonne River, and several high-flows and flood events. Downstream of the dam, fine sediment-laden flows occurring over the first weeks left 0.37 m thick deposits in certain areas. However, 15 months later, no aggradation of the downstream riverbed had yet been noticed.

Abstract

For at least two centuries, the lateral mobility of the meandering reaches of the Cher River (France) has been very low. This article aims to identify the main causes of this behavior. Two not-mutually exclusive explanatory hypotheses are proposed. Under the first hypothesis, the natural mechanisms of loop migration would have been inhibited or blocked by the presence of bank protections. Under the second hypothesis, a decrease in the frequency and/or intensity of morphogenic hydrological events since the nineteenth century would have reduced the frequency of bedload mobilization and/or reduced the capacity of the river to erode its banks. To test these hypotheses, the diachronic evolution of the planform was reconstituted at different time scales using a GIS and field surveys. Morphological transformations were characterized and quantified (eroded and vegetated areas, length of eroded banks, rates of bank retreat) and the critical discharges of bedload mobilization and of lateral erosion were estimated. Engineering works in the riverbed were identified and, when possible, dated. The results show that meander morphodynamics have been highly constrained and disrupted by engineering works, probably for over a century. However, the meanders still have noticeable potential for bedload mobility and lateral erosion, and hence for self-restoration.

Abstract

International audience; A paleoenvironnemental and geoarchelogical pluridisciplinary and multi-proxy research was carried out on the upstream Loire basin to study the hydro-sedimentary flows wich have affected headwaters of the hydrosystem during the Holocene. A set of 107 radicarbon dates support the results. A statistical analysis (Cumulative Probability Density Function) defined the different evolution stages during the last three millenia. The results are similar to those obtained in the the Rhône Valley. Four major erosional crisis occurred circa the beginning of second Iron Age (around 400 BC), the end of Iron Age and the beginning of the Roman period (100 BC-100 AD), in the Late Antiquity and at the beginning of the Upper Middle Age (350-550 AD) and finally between the xivth and the end of the xixth century. The classic subdivision of the LIA in three phases is here enriched by a new period of hydrosystems stability during the xviiith century. Between these major crises, the Early Middle Age appears as an unstable environmental period, while a long period of stability occurred between the end of the ixth century and the beginning of the xiiith century, during the medieval little climatic optimum.; Une recherche paléoenvironnementale et géoarchéologique pluridisciplinaire a été conduite dans le bassin supérieur du fleuve Loire en vue d’apprécier, à partir d’une chronostratigraphie multi-proxy, la variabilité des flux hydro-sédimentaires dans les têtes de bassin du réseau hydrographique à l’échelle de l’Holocène. Sur la base de 107 datations par le radiocarbone obtenues sur l’ensemble du secteur étudié, une analyse statistique par densité de probabilité a permis de dégager une périodisation de l’évolution du bassin versant à l’échelle des trois derniers millénaires. Celle-ci concorde avec les connaissances déjà acquises sur l’axe voisin de la moyenne vallée du Rhône. Quatre crises érosives majeures se manifestent au début de La Tène (vers 400 av. J.-C.), à la transition entre la fin de l’Âge du Fer et le Haut-Empire romain (100 av. J.-C.-100 ap. J.-C.), dans la seconde partie du Bas-Empire romain et au début du haut Moyen Âge (350-550 ap. J.-C.) puis entre le xive et la fin du xixe siècle. La tripartition classique du PAG est également vérifiée dans cet environnement de moyenne montagne, mais ici enrichie par la mise en évidence d’une période inédite de stabilisation temporaire des hydrosystèmes élémentaires au xviiie siècle. Entre ces crises principales, le haut Moyen Âge apparaît comme une période d’instabilité environnementale, tandis qu’une longue période de grande stabilité se développe entre la fin du ixe siècle et le début du xiiie siècle, en coïncidence avec le Petit Optimum Médiéval.

Abstract

This study examines the fluvial readjustment of a Javanese river impacted by the major eruption of the Merapi volcano (Indonesia) in October and November 2010. The basin of the Opak River, located on the southern flank of the Merapi, was subject to substantial sediment input related to massive pyroclastic deposits that were remobilized by numerous lahars during the year after the eruption. Two study sites were equipped in order to evaluate the morphodynamic evolution of the riverbed of the Opak River. Topographic surveys, bedload particle marking, and suspended sediment sampling revealed an important sediment mobilization during efficient flash floods. Surprisingly, no bed aggradation related to the progradation of a sediment wave was observed. Two years after the eruptive event, marked bed incision was observed. The Opak River readjustment differs from that of other fluvial systems affected by massive eruptions in two ways. Firstly, local population extracted the sand and blocks injected by the eruption as they represent a valuable economic resource. Secondly, several dams trapped the major part of the sediment load remobilized by lahars.

Abstract

The Alps are highly impacted by debris flows that cause major problems for companies and transport networks located in the valley bottoms. One such event occurred in the Rif Blanc catchment and affected the road network in the French Alps, as well as adjacent areas across the Italian border, for several days in June 2012. This article presents two independent approaches to vulnerability assessment. Based on investigations conducted during a survey of local authorities following the event, we compared theoretical risk management and real crisis management in terms of decision making and modes of intervention. Functional vulnerability and territorial consequences were analyzed using a best travel time model of accessibility. We show that a bottom-up approach is practiced in case of actual management planning with a central coordination of general council. Conversely theoretical crisis management shows prefect as the key actor supported by several other state institutions. Our analysis also revealed that a debris flow event with a local impact on the road network has territorial consequences at a regional scale. This study contributes to the discussion about how to minimize the vulnerability of alpine transport networks prone to debris flows. Our results could serve as a decision support tool for public authorities.

Abstract

L’identification de paléochenaux dans les plaines alluviales permet d’apporter des éléments de compréhension des morphologies et des processus fluviaux passés. L’étude présentée porte sur le secteur de Bigny, localisé dans la moyenne vallée du Cher, où se trouve un nombre important de paléoméandres, dont certains sont datés de la seconde moitié de l’Holocène. La démarche méthodologique mise en œuvre comprend l’étude de MNT LiDAR, la caractérisation des formes fluviales héritées (altitude, largeur, amplitude et rayon de courbure) et l’estimation de paramètres paléohydrauliques à partir des dimensions des chenaux abandonnés (paléodébits à pleins-bords). Les résultats permettent de disposer les premiers jalons d’une chronologie d’évolution paléohydrographique. La comparaison avec la morphologie locale de la rivière et avec les cartes historiques montre que la réduction de la sinuosité a eu lieu entre le Moyen-Âge et l’Epoque Moderne. Elle démontre également la stabilisation du tracé du Cher dans ce secteur depuis le milieu du XVIIIème siècle, probablement en lien avec des aménagements hydrauliques historiques. L’analyse morphométrique permet ensuite de distinguer des gabarits variés parmi lesquels des paléoméandres de grande taille. Néanmoins, la comparaison des paléoméandres avec le référentiel actuel montre que la série étudiée est proche du gabarit des chenaux du XIXème siècle. On ne peut donc pas conclure à un changement majeur de régime hydrologique enregistré par les paléoméandres, mais plutôt à des ajustements mineurs de la morphologie des chenaux (largeur, profondeur) liés à des modifications des débits liquides et solides. The identification of palaeochannels in alluvial plains allows a better understanding of the fluvial morphologies and processes of the past. The present study concerns an area with palaeomeanders (Bigny), located in the middle valley of the Cher River (South of the “Bassin de Paris”), where are located numerous palaeomeanders dated second half of the Holocene. The methodological approach is based on the study of LiDAR DEM, the characterization of inherited fluvial landforms (elevation, width, amplitude and radius of curvature) and palaeohydraulic reconstructions derived from meanders dimensions (bankfull discharge). These results allow a palaeohydrographic chronology to be reconstructed. Firstly, the comparison with current local morphology and historical maps evidences that the reduction of the fluvial pattern sinuosity occurred between the Middle Ages and the mid-18th century. Also, it shows the channel stabilization since this era, likely linked with historical engineering. Then, the morphometric analysis highlights various sizes of palaeochannels, among others, large-sized palaeomeanders. However, the comparison of the palaeomeanders with the current river shows that their sizes are close to those of the 19th century. Thus, we cannot conclude to a major change in the hydrological regime recorded by the palaeomeanders, but rather to slight channel adjustments (width and depth) related to liquid discharge and sediment load modifications.

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the applicability of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) for monitoring the displacement of slow-moving landslides. GPR data is used to estimate the vertical movement of rotational slides in combination with other surveying techniques. The experimental site is located along the Normandy coast (North East France) here several rotational landslides are continuously affected by a seasonal kinematic pattern (low displacement rates of 0.01 to 0.10 m yr−1) and periodically by major acceleration events (high displacement of 1.0 to 7.0 m per event).
