Abstract

The proposed experiment is a further development of the DIRAC experiment already running at CERN PS. The observation of long-lived (metastable) states of $\pi^+\pi^-$ atoms ($A_{2\pi}$) will be performed with the same setup. This observation opens a possibility to measure the energy difference between $ns$ and $np$ states and to determine the value of the combination $2a_0+a_2$ of S-wave $\pi\pi$ scattering lengths in a model-independent way. In combination with the $A_{2\pi}$ lifetime measurement providing the value $|a_0-a_2|$ DIRAC is in the position to get $a_0$ and $a_2$ separately on the basis of $A_{2\pi}$ data only.

Abstract

The proposed experiment is a further development of the DIRAC experiment already running at CERN PS. Up to now more than 21000 $\pi^+\pi^-$ pairs originated from the $\pi^+\pi^-$ atom ($A_{2\pi}$) breakup were identified and the overall accuracy of the $A_{2\pi}$ lifetime is about 9% in accordance with the DIRAC proposal. This measurement allowed to extract the difference $|a_0-a_2|$ of $s$-wave $\pi\pi$-scattering length with accuracy of 4.3%. The observation of long-lived (metastable) $A_{2\pi}$ states will be performed with the same setup. This observation opens a possibility to measure the energy difference between $ns$ and $np$ states and to determine the value of another combination $2a_0+a_2$ of $\pi\pi$ scattering length in a model-independent way. In combination with the first measurement it allows to get $a_0$ and $a_2$ separately. An additional measurement of the multiple scattering angles in different materials with accuracy better than 1% will be performed in parallel with the observation. This measurement is needed to improve the systematic accuracy in the $A_{2\pi}$ lifetime for the data already collected in 2008--2010.

Abstract

Papillary lesions are defined as an amalgam of various lesions which represent a diagnostic challenge, for both the radiologist and pathologist. They are diagnosed on the basis of a combination of clinical, imaging, and pathological findings and their features carry differing prognostic implications for the affected patients. The aim of this pictorial essay is to review the clinical and pathological findings in papillary breast lesions, to show the advantages and limits of each imaging method in their diagnosis with emphasis on the importance of ultrasound in the differential diagnosis. Also, the spectrum of ultrasound features (conventional, Doppler ultrasound and elastography) of papillary lesions of the breast will be illustrated.

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the systemic inflammatory response in preeclampsia compared to normal pregnancy., Materials and Methods: The following serum parameters were determined in three groups of patients: leukocytes, neutrophils, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), C-reactive protein (CRP), and certain markers of oxidative stress. Fetal status was assessed based on the gestational age at which birth occurred, on the Apgar score, and on fetal weight., Results: In preeclampsia, a higher systemic inflammatory status was found compared to normal pregnancy. Gestational age at birth, fetal weight, and Apgar score were significantly lower in the group with preeclampsia compared to normal pregnancy., Conclusion: In preeclampsia, there is an increased systemic inflammatory response compared to normal pregnancy, which can influence fetal status at birth., (Copyright © 2015. Abstract

The imaging evaluation of the augmented breast is becoming more and more frequent in daily practice. Even if mammography remains the golden standard for breast cancer screening, ultrasound is used as a first step investigation in young symptomatic patients or as a screening tool in detecting pathology related to the implants. This pictorial essay reviews the indications and limitations of the imaging methods and illustrates the normal and pathological ultrasound findings in the augmented breast.
