The pervasive presence of warm gas in galaxy halos suggests that the circumgalactic medium (CGM) is multiphase in its ionization structure and complex in its kinematics. Some recent state-of-the-art cosmological galaxy simulations predict an azimuthal dependence of CGM metallicities. We investigate the presence of such a trend by analyzing the distribution of gas properties in the CGM around 47 $z <$ 0.7 galaxies from the Multiphase Galaxy Halos Survey determined using a cloud-by-cloud, multiphase, ionization modelling approach. We identify three distinct populations of absorbers: cool clouds ($T \sim$ 10$^{4.1}$ K) in photoionization equilibrium, warm-hot collisionally ionized clouds ($T \sim$ 10$^{4.5-5}$ K) affected by time-dependent photoionization, and hotter clouds ($T \sim$ 10$^{5.4-6}$ K) with broad OVI and Lya absorption consistent with collisional ionization. We find that fragmentation can play a role in the origin of cool clouds, that warm-hot clouds are out of equilibrium due to rapid cooling, and that hotter clouds are representative of virialized halo gas in all but the lowest mass galaxies. The metallicities of clouds do not depend on the azimuthal angle or other galaxy properties for any of these populations. At face value, this disagrees with the simplistic model of the CGM with bipolar outflows and cold-mode planar accretion. However, the number of clouds per sightline is significantly larger close to the minor and major axes. This implies that the processes of outflows and accretion are contributing to these CGM cloud populations, and our sightlines are probing gas of mixed origins at all azimuthal angles in these low redshift galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The CGM hosts many physical processes with different kinematic signatures that affect galaxy evolution. We address the CGM-galaxy kinematic connection by quantifying the fraction of HI that is aligned with galaxy rotation with the equivalent width co-rotation fraction, $f_{\rm EWcorot}$. Using 70 quasar sightlines having HST/COS HI absorption (${12<\log (N(HI)/{\rm cm}^{-2})<20}$) within $5R_{\rm vir}$ of $z<0.6$ galaxies we find that $f_{\rm EWcorot}$ increases with increasing HI column density. $f_{\rm EWcorot}$ is flat at $\sim0.6$ within $R_{\rm vir}$ and decreases beyond $R_{\rm vir}$ to $f_{\rm EWcorot}$$\sim0.35$. $f_{\rm EWcorot}$ also has a flat distribution with azimuthal and inclination angles within $R_{\rm vir}$, but decreases by a factor of two outside of $R_{\rm vir}$ for minor axis gas and by a factor of two for edge-on galaxies. Inside $R_{\rm vir}$, co-rotation dominated HI is located within $\sim 20$ deg of the major and minor axes. We surprisingly find equal amounts of HI absorption consistent with co-rotation along both major and minor axes within $R_{\rm vir}$. However, this co-rotation disappears along the minor axis beyond $R_{\rm vir}$, suggesting that if this gas is from outflows, then it is bound to galaxies. $f_{\rm EWcorot}$ is constant over two decades of halo mass, with no decrease for log(M$_{\rm h}/M_{\odot})>12$ as expected from simulations. The multiphase CGM hosts critical processes that affect galaxy evolution such as accretion and outflows. We searched for evidence of these phenomena by using the EW co-rotation fraction ($f_{\rm EWcorot}$) to study the kinematic connection between the multiphase CGM and host galaxy rotation. We examined 27 systems with absorption lines from HST/COS (including, but not limited to, SiII, CII, SiIII, CIII, and OVI) within $21\leq D\leq~276$ kpc of galaxies. We find the median $f_{\rm EWcorot}$ for all ions is consistent within errors and the $f_{\rm EWcorot}$ increases with increasing N$(\rm HI)$. The $f_{\rm EWcorot}$ of lower ionization gas likely decreases with increasing $D/R_{\rm vir}$ while OVI and HI are more consistent with being flat. The $f_{\rm EWcorot}$ varies minimally as a function of azimuthal angle and is similar for all ions at a fixed azimuthal angle. The larger number of OVI detections enabled us to investigate where the majority of co-rotating gas is found. Highly co-rotating OVI primarily resides along the galaxies' major axis. Looking at the $f_{\rm EWcorot}$ as a function of ionization potential (${d{f_{\rm EWcorot}}}/{d{(eV)}}$), we find a stronger co-rotation signature for lower-ionization gas. There are suggestions of a connection between the CGM metallicity and major axis co-rotation where low-ionization gas with higher $f_{\rm EWcorot}$ exhibits lower metallicity and may trace large-scale filamentary inflows. Higher ionization gas with higher $f_{\rm EWcorot}$ exhibits higher metallicity and may instead trace co-planar recycled gas accretion. As part of our program to identify host galaxies of known z=2-3 MgII absorbers with the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI), we discovered a compact group giving rise to a z=2.431 DLA with ultra-strong MgII absorption in quasar field J234628+124859. The group consists of four star-forming galaxies within 8-28 kpc and $v\sim40-340$ km s$^{-1}$ of each other, where tidal streams are weakly visible in deep HST imaging. The group geometric centre is D=25 kpc from the quasar (D=20-40 kpc for each galaxy). Galaxy G1 dominates the group ($1.66L_{\ast}$, ${\rm SFR}_{\rm FUV}=11.6$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$) while G2, G3, and G4 are less massive ($0.1-0.3L_{\ast}$, ${\rm SFR}_{\rm FUV}=1.4-2.0$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$). Using a VLT/UVES quasar spectrum covering the HI Lyman series and metal lines such as MgII, SiIII, and CIV, we characterised the kinematic structure and physical conditions along the line-of-sight with cloud-by-cloud multiphase Bayesian modelling. The absorption system has a total $\log(N(HI)/{\rm cm}^{-2})=20.53$ and an $N(HI)$-weighted mean metallicity of $\log(Z/Z_{\odot})=-0.68$, with a very large MgII linewidth of $\Delta v\sim700$ km s$^{-1}$. The highly kinematically complex profile is well-modelled with 30 clouds across low and intermediate ionisation phases with values ${13\lesssim\log(N(HI)/{\rm cm}^{-2})\lesssim20}$ and $-3\lesssim\log(Z/Z_{\odot})\lesssim1$. Comparing these properties to the galaxy properties, we infer a wide range of gaseous environments, including metal-rich outflows, metal-poor IGM accretion, and tidal streams from galaxy--galaxy interactions. This diversity of structures forms the intragroup medium around a complex compact group environment at the epoch of peak star formation activity. Surveys of low redshift compact groups would benefit from obtaining a more complete census of this medium for characterising evolutionary pathways., Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures. We introduce a Bayesian approach coupled with a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method and the maximum likelihood statistic for fitting the profiles of narrow absorption lines (NALs) in quasar spectra. This method also incorporates overlap between different absorbers. We illustrate and test this method by fitting models to a "mini-broad" (mini-BAL) and six NAL profiles in four spectra of the quasar UM675 taken over a rest-frame interval of 4.24 years. Our fitting results are consistent with past results for the mini-BAL system in this quasar by Hamann et al. (1997b). We also measure covering factors ($C_{\rm f}$) for two narrow components in the CIV and NV mini-BALs and their overlap covering factor with the broad component. We find that $C_{\rm f}$(NV) is always larger than $C_{\rm f}$(CIV) for the broad component, while the opposite is true for the narrow components in the mini-BAL system. This could be explained if the broad and narrow components originated in gas at different radial distances, but it seems more likely to be due to them produced by gas at the same distance but with different gas densities (i.e., ionization states). The variability detected only in the broad absorption component in the mini-BAL system is probably due to gas motion since both $C_{\rm f}$(CIV) and $C_{\rm f}$(NV) vary. We determine for the first time that multiple absorbing clouds (i.e., a broad and two narrow components) overlap along our line of sight. We have obtained new observations of the absorption system at $z_\mathrm{abs}=0.48$ toward QSO Q0454-220, which we use to constrain its chemical and physical conditions. The system features metal-enriched gas and previously unknown low-metallicity gas detected $\sim 200 \, \mathrm{km \, s^{-1}}$ blueward of the metal-enriched gas. The low-metallicity gas is detected in multiple Lyman series lines but is not detected in any metal lines. Our analysis includes low-ionization (e.g., Fe II, Mg II) metal lines, high-ionization (e.g., C IV, O VI, N V) metal lines, and several Lyman series lines. We use new UV spectra taken with HST/COS along with data taken from HST/STIS, Keck/HIRES, and VLT/UVES. We find that the absorption system can be explained with a photoionized low-ionization phase with $\mathrm{[Fe/H]} \sim -0.5$ and $n_\mathrm{H} \sim 10^{-2.3} \, \mathrm{cm}^{-3}$, a photoionized high-ionization phase with a conservative lower limit of $-3.3 < \mathrm{[Fe/H]}$ and $n_\mathrm{H} \sim 10^{-3.8} \, \mathrm{cm}^{-3}$, and a low-metallicity component with a conservative upper limit of $\mathrm{[Fe/H]} < -2.5$ that may be photoionized or collisionally ionized. We suggest that the low-ionization phase may be due to cold-flow accretion via large-scale filamentary structure or due to recycled accretion while the high-ionization phase is the result of ancient outflowing material from a nearby galaxy. The low-metallicity component may come from pristine accretion. We present here results from a survey of intervening C IV absorbers at $z < 0.16$ conducted using 223 sightlines from the Hubble Spectroscopic Legacy Archive. Most systems (83%) out of the total sample of 69 have simple kinematics with 1 or 2 C IV components. In the 22 C IV systems with well constrained H I column densities, the temperatures from the $b$-values imply predominantly photoionized plasma ($T\leq 10^5$ K) and non-thermal dynamics. These systems also have solar or higher metallicities. We obtain a C IV line density of $d\mathcal{N}/dX = 5.1\pm 1.0$ for $\log [N(C~IV)~(cm^{-2})]\geq12.9$, and $\Omega_{C~IV}=(8.01\pm 1.62) \times 10^{-8}$ for $12.9 \leq \log [N(C~IV)~(cm^{-2})] \leq 15.0$. The C IV bearing diffuse gas in the $z < 0.16$ Universe has a metallicity of $(2.07~{\pm}~0.43)~\times~10^{-3}$ Z$_{\odot}$, an order of magnitude more than the metal abundances in the IGM at high redshifts ($z \gtrsim 5$), and consistent with the slow build-up of metals in the diffuse circum/intergalactic space with cosmic time. For $z<0.015$ (complete above $L>0.01L^\star$), the Sloan Digital Sky Survey provides a tentative evidence of declining covering fraction for strong C IV ($N>10^{13.5}~cm^{-2}$) with $\rho$ (impact parameter) and $\rho/R_\mathrm{vir}$. However, the increase at high separations suggests that strong systems are not necessarily coincident with such galaxies. We also find that strong C IV absorption at $z<0.051$ is not coincident with galaxy over-dense regions complete for $L>0.13L^\star$, Comment: Published in MNRAS. We present an analysis of the galaxy environment and physical properties of a partial Lyman limit system at z = 0.83718 with HI and metal line components closely separated in redshift space ($|\Delta v| \approx 400$ km/s) towards the background quasar HE1003+0149. The HST/COS far-ultraviolet spectrum provides coverage of lines of oxygen ions from OI to OV. Comparison of observed spectral lines with synthetic profiles generated from Bayesian ionization modeling reveals the presence of two distinct gas phases in the absorbing medium. The low-ionization phase of the absorber has sub-solar metallicities (1/10-th solar) with indications of [C/O] < 0 in each of the components. The OIV and OV trace a more diffuse higher-ionization medium with predicted HI column densities that are $\approx 2$ dex lower. The quasar field observed with VLT/MUSE reveals three dwarf galaxies with stellar masses of $M^* \sim 10^{8} - 10^{9}$ M$_\odot$, and with star formation rates of $\approx 0.5 - 1$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, at projected separations of $\rho/R_{\mathrm{vir}} \approx 1.8 - 3.0$ from the absorber. Over a wider field with projected proper separation of $\leq 5$ Mpc and radial velocity offset of $|\Delta v| \leq 1000$ km/s from the absorber, 21 more galaxies are identified in the $VLT$/VIMOS and Magellan deep galaxy redshift surveys, with 8 of them within $1$ Mpc and $500$ km/s, consistent with the line of sight penetrating a group of galaxies. The absorber presumably traces multiple phases of cool ($T \sim 10^4$ K) photoionized intragroup medium. We use adaptive mesh refinement cosmological simulations to study the spatial distribution and covering fraction of OVI absorption in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) as a function of projected virial radius and azimuthal angle. We compare these simulations to an observed sample of 53 galaxies from the Multiphase Galaxy Halos Survey. Using Mockspec, an absorption line analysis pipeline, we generate synthetic quasar absorption line observations of the simulated CGM. To best emulate observations, we studied the averaged properties of 15,000 "mock samples" each of 53 sightlines having a distribution of $D/R_{vir}$ and sightline orientation statistically consistent with the observations. We find that the OVI covering fraction obtained for the simulated galaxies agrees well with the observed value for the inner halo ($D/R_{vir} \leq 0.375$) and is within $1.1\sigma$ in the outer halo ($D/R_{vir} > 0.75$), but is underproduced within $0.375 < D/R_{vir} \leq 0.75$. The observed bimodal distribution of OVI covering fraction with azimuthal angle, showing higher frequency of absorption along the projected major and minor axes of galaxies, is not reproduced in the simulations. Further analysis reveals the spatial-kinematic distribution of OVI absorbing gas is dominated by outflows in the inner halo mixed with a inflowing gas that originates from further out in the halo. Though the CGM of the individual simulated galaxies exhibit spatial structure, the flat azimuthal distribution occurs because the individual simulated galaxies do not develop a CGM structure that is universal from galaxy to galaxy., Comment: Accepted on December 1, 2020 for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

The multi-phase circumgalactic medium (CGM) arises within the complex environment around a galaxy, or collection of galaxies, and possibly originates from a wide range of physical mechanisms. In this paper, we attempt to disentangle the origins of these multi-phase structures and present a detailed analysis of the quasar field Q0122-003 field using Keck/KCWI galaxy observations and HST/COS spectra probing the CGM. Our re-analysis of this field shows that there are two galaxies associated with the absorption. We have discovered a dwarf galaxy, G_27kpc ($M_{\star}=10^{8.7}$ M$_{\odot}$), at z=0.39863 that is 27 kpc from the quasar sightline. G_27kpc is only +21 km/s from a more massive ($M_{\star}=10^{10.5}$ M$_{\odot}$) star-forming galaxy, G_163kpc, at an impact parameter of 163 kpc. While G_163kpc is actively forming stars (SFR=6.9 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$), G_27kpc has a low star-formation rate (SFR=$0.08\pm0.03$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$) and star formation surface density ($\Sigma_{SFR}=0.006$ M$_{\odot}$ kpc$^{-2}$ yr$^{-1}$), implying no active outflows. By comparing galaxy SFRs, kinematics, masses and distances from the quasar sightline to the absorption kinematics, column densities and metallicities, we have inferred the following: (1) Part of the low-ionization phase has a metallicity and kinematics consistent with being accreted onto G_27kpc. (2) The remainder of the low ionization phase has metallicities and kinematics consistent with being intragroup gas being transferred from G_27kpc to G_163kpc. (3) The high ionization phase is consistent with being produced solely by outflows originating from the massive halo of G_163kpc. Our results demonstrate the complex nature of the multi-phase CGM, especially around galaxy groups, and that detailed case-by-case studies are critical for disentangling its origins., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS 2020 November 10

The relationship between a galaxy's properties and its circumgalactic medium (CGM) provides a unique view of how galaxies evolve. We present an interesting edge-on (i=86 degrees) disk galaxy (G1547) where the CGM is probed by a background quasar at a distance of 84 kpc and within 10 degrees of the galaxy major axis. G1547 does not have any detectable CGM absorption down to stringent limits, covering HI (EW$_r$<0.02A, log(N(HI)/cm$^{-2}$)<12.6) and a range of low and high ionisation absorption lines (OI, CII, NII, SiII, CIII, NIII, SiIII, CIV, SiIV, NV and OVI). This system is rare, given the covering fraction of $1.00_{-0.04}^{+0.00}$ for sub-L* galaxies within 50-100 kpc of quasar sightlines. G1547 has a low SFR (1.1 M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$), SSFR ($1.5\times10^{-10}$yr$^{-1}$) and $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ (0.06 M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$kpc$^{-2}$) and does not exhibit AGN or star-formation driven outflows. Compared to the general population of galaxies, G1547 is in the green valley and has an above average metallicity with a negative gradient. When compared to other HI absorption-selected galaxies, we find that quiescent galaxies with log(SSFR/yr$^{-1})<-11$ have a low probability (4/12) of possessing detectable HI in their CGM, while all galaxies (40/40) with log(SSFR/yr$^{-1})>-11$ have HI absorption. We conclude that SSFR is a good indicator of the presence of HI CGM. Interestingly however, G1547 is the only galaxy with log(SSFR/yr$^{-1})>-11$ that has no detectable CGM. Given the properties of G1547, and its absent CGM, it is plausible that G1547 is undergoing quenching due to a lack of accreting fuel for star-formation, with an estimated quenching timescale of $4\pm1$ Gyr. Observations at intermediate redshifts reveal the presence of numerous, compact, weak MgII absorbers with near to super-solar metallicities, often surrounded by more extended regions that produce CIV and/or OVI absorption in the circumgalactic medium at large impact parameters from luminous galaxies. Their origin and nature remains unclear. We hypothesize that undetected, satellite dwarf galaxies are responsible for producing some of these weak MgII absorbers. We test our hypothesis using gas dynamical simulations of galactic outflows from a dwarf satellite galaxy with a halo mass of $5\times10^{9}$ M$_{\odot}$, which could form in a larger $L^{*}$ halo at z=2, to study the gas interaction in the halo. We find that thin, filamentary, weak MgII absorbers are produced in two stages: 1) when shocked core collapse supernova (SNII) enriched gas descending in a galactic fountain gets shock compressed by upward flows driven by subsequent SNIIs and cools (phase 1), and later, 2) during an outflow driven by Type Ia supernovae that shocks and sweeps up pervasive SNII enriched gas, which then cools (phase 2). The width of the filaments and fragments are $\lesssim~100$ pc, and the smallest ones cannot be resolved at 12.8 pc resolution. The MgII absorbers in our simulations are continuously generated for >150 Myr by shocks and cooling, though each cloud survives for only ~60 Myr. Their metallicity is 10-20% solar metallicity and column density is $<10^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$. They are also surrounded by larger (0.5-1 kpc) CIV absorbers that seem to survive longer. In addition, larger-scale (>1 kpc) CIV and OVI clouds are produced in both expanding and shocked SNII enriched gas which is photoionized by the UV metagalactic radiation at intermediate redshift. We explore how environment affects the metallicity of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) using 13 low mass galaxy groups (2-5 galaxies) at $\langle z_{abs}\rangle=0.25$ identified near background quasars. Using quasar spectra from HST/COS and from Keck/HIRES or VLT/UVES we measure column densities of, or determine limits on, CGM absorption lines. We use a Markov chain Monte Carlo approach with Cloudy to estimate metallicities of cool ($T\sim10^4$K) CGM gas within groups and compare them to CGM metallicities of 47 isolated galaxies. Both group and isolated CGM metallicities span a wide range ($-2<$[Si/H]$<0$), where the mean group ($-0.54\pm0.22$) and isolated ($-0.77\pm0.14$) CGM metallicities are similar. Group and isolated environments have similar distributions of {\HI} column densities as a function of impact parameter. However, contrary to isolated galaxies, we do not find an anti-correlation between {\HI} column density and the nearest group galaxy impact parameter. We additionally divided the groups by member luminosity ratios (i.e., galaxy-galaxy and galaxy-dwarf groups). While there was no significant difference in their mean metallicities, a modest increase in sample size should allow one to statistically identify a higher CGM metallicity in galaxy-dwarf groups compared to galaxy-galaxy groups. We conclude that either environmental effects have not played an important role in the metallicity of the CGM at this stage and expect that this may only occur when galaxies are strongly interacting or merging, or that some isolated galaxies have higher CGM metallicities due to past interactions. We present the detection and analysis of a weak low-ionization absorber at $z = 0.12122$ along the blazar sightline PG~$1424+240$, using spectroscopic data from both $HST$/COS and STIS. The absorber is a weak Mg II analogue, with incidence of weak C II and Si II, along with multi-component C IV and O VI. The low ions are tracing a dense ($n_{H} \sim 10^{-3}$ cm$^{-3}$) parsec scale cloud of solar or higher metallicity. The kinematically coincident higher ions are either from a more diffuse ($n_{H} \sim 10^{-5} - 10^{-4}$ cm$^{-3}$) photoionized phase of kiloparsec scale dimensions, or are tracing a warm (T $\sim 2 \times 10^{5}$ K) collisionally ionized transition temperature plasma layer. The absorber resides in a galaxy overdense region, with 18 luminous ($> L^*$) galaxies within a projected radius of $5$ Mpc and $750$ km s$^{-1}$ of the absorber. The multi-phase properties, high metallicity and proximity to a $1.4$ $L^*$ galaxy, at $\rho \sim 200$ kpc and $|\Delta v| = 11$ km s$^{-1}$ separation, favors the possibility of the absorption tracing circumgalactic gas. The absorber serves as an example of weak Mg II - O VI systems as a means to study multiphase high velocity clouds in external galaxies., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables. We present ISM and CGM metallicities for 25 absorption systems associated with isolated star-forming galaxies (=0.28) with 9.417.2) reside along the minor axis. This suggest N(HI) could be a useful indicator of accretion/outflows. We conclude that CGM is not well mixed, given the range of galaxy-CGM metallicities, and that metallicity at low redshift might not be a good tracer of CGM processes. Furthermore we should replace integrated line-of-sight, single phase, metallicities with multi-phase, cloud-cloud metallicities, which could be more indicative of the physical processes within the CGM., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 1 table. We present an ultraviolet quasar absorption line analysis of metal lines associated with three strong intervening H I absorbers (with $N$(H I) $>$ 10$^{16.5}$ cm$^{-2}$) detected in the outskirts of Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect-selected galaxy clusters ($z_{\rm cl} \sim 0.4 - 0.5$), within clustocentric impact parameters of $\rho_{cl}$ $\sim$ $(1.6 - 4.7)r_{500}$. Discovered in a recent set of targeted far-UV $HST$/COS spectroscopic observations, these absorbers have the highest H I column densities ever observed in the outskirts of galaxy clusters, and are also rich in metal absorption lines. Photoionization models yield single phase solutions for the three absorbers with gas densities of $n_{H} \sim 10^{-3} - 10^{-4}$ cm$^{-3}$ and metallicities of [X/H] $>$ -1.0 (from one-tenth solar to near-solar). The widths of detected absorption lines suggest gas temperatures of $T \sim 10^4$ K. The inferred densities (temperatures) are significantly higher (lower) compared to the X-ray emitting intracluster medium in cluster cores. The absorbers are tracing a cool phase of the intracluster gas in the cluster outskirts, either associated with gas stripped from cluster galaxies via outflows, tidal streams or ram-pressure forces, or denser regions within the intracluster medium that were uniformly chemically enriched from an earlier epoch of enhanced supernova and AGN feedback., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables. We investigate the geometric distribution of gas metallicities in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) around $47$, $z<0.7$ galaxies from the "Multiphase Galaxy Halos" Survey. Using a combination of quasar spectra from HST/COS and from Keck/HIRES or VLT/UVES we measure column densities of, or determine limits on, CGM absorption lines. We then use a Monte-Carlo Markov chain approach with Cloudy to estimate the metallicity of cool (T$\sim$$10^4$K) CGM gas. We also use HST images to determine host galaxy inclination and quasar--galaxy azimuthal angles. Our sample spans a HI column density range of $13.8$ cm s$^{-1}<{\log N_{HI}}<19.9$ cm s$^{-1}$. We find (1) while the metallicity distribution appears bimodal, a Hartigan dip test cannot rule out a unimodal distribution ($0.4\sigma$). (2) CGM metallicities are independent of halo mass, spanning three orders of magnitude at fixed halo mass. (3) The CGM metallicity does not depend on the galaxy azimuthal and inclination angles regardless of HI column density, impact parameter and galaxy color. (4) Ionization parameter does not depend on azimuthal angle. We suggest that the partial Lyman limit metallicity bimodality is not driven by a spatial azimuthal bimodality. Our results are consistent with simulations where the CGM is complex and outflowing, accreting, and recycled gas are well-homogenized at $z<0.7$. The presence of low metallicity gas at all orientations suggests that cold streams of accreting filaments are not necessarily aligned with the galaxy plane at low redshifts or intergalactic transfer may dominate. We probe the high-ionization circumgalactic medium by examining absorber kinematics, absorber-galaxy kinematics, and average absorption profiles of 31 OVI absorbers from the "Multiphase Galaxy Halos" Survey as a function of halo mass, redshift, inclination, and azimuthal angle. The galaxies are isolated at $0.12

We present analysis on three intervening H I-C IV absorption systems tracing gas within galaxy group/cluster environments, identified in the $HST$/COS far-UV spectra of the background quasars PG $1148+549$ ($z_{abs}=0.00346$), SBS~$1122+594$ ($z_{abs}=0.00402$) and RXJ~$1230.8+0115$ ($z_{abs}=0.00574$). The ionization models are consistent with the origin of metal lines and H I from a cool and diffuse photoionized gas phase with $T \lesssim 4 \times 10^{4}$ K and $n_{\mathrm{H}} \lesssim 5 \times 10^{-4}$ cm$^{-3}$. The three absorbers have $89$, $51$ and $17$ galaxies detected within $1$ Mpc and $|\Delta v| < 600$ km s$^{-1}$. The RXJ~$1230.8+0115$ sightline traces the outskirt regions of the Virgo cluster where the absorber is found to have super-solar metallicity. The detection of metal lines along with H I has enabled us to confirm the presence of cool, diffuse gas possibly enriched by outflows and tidal interactions in environments with significant galaxy density., Comment: Published in MNRAS, 19 pages, 10 figures

We present the first galaxy-OVI absorption kinematic study for 20 absorption systems (EW>0.1~{\AA}) associated with isolated galaxies (0.15$33^{\circ}$). OVI absorption along the galaxy major axis is not correlated with galaxy rotation kinematics, with only 1/10 systems that could be explained with rotation/accretion models. This is in contrast to co-rotation commonly observed for MgII absorption. OVI along the minor axis could be modeled by accelerating outflows but only for small opening angles, while the majority of the OVI is decelerating. Along both axes, stacked OVI profiles reside at the galaxy systemic velocity with the absorption kinematics spanning the entire dynamical range of their galaxies. The OVI found in AMR cosmological simulations exists within filaments and in halos of ~50 kpc surrounding galaxies. Simulations show that major axis OVI gas inflows along filaments and decelerates as it approaches the galaxy while increasing in its level of co-rotation. Minor axis outflows in the simulations are effective within 50-75 kpc beyond that they decelerate and fall back onto the galaxy. Although the simulations show clear OVI kinematic signatures they are not directly comparable to observations. When we compare kinematic signatures integrated through the entire simulated galaxy halo we find that these signatures are washed out due to full velocity distribution of OVI throughout the halo. We conclude that OVI alone does not serve as a useful kinematic indicator of gas accretion, outflows or star-formation and likely best probes the halo virial temperature., Comment: 24 pages, 21 figures, 4 tables. We search for velocity changes (i.e., acceleration/deceleration) of narrow absorption lines (NALs) that are intrinsic to the quasars, using spectra of 6 bright quasars that have been observed more than once with 8-10m class telescopes. While variations in line strength and profile are frequently reported (especially in broader absorption lines), definitive evidence for velocity shifts has not been found with only a few exceptions. Direct velocity shift measurements are valuable constraints on the acceleration mechanisms. In this study, we determine velocity shifts by comparing the absorption profiles of NALs at two epochs separated by more than 10 years in the observed frame, using the cross-correlation function method and we estimate the uncertainties using Monte Carlo simulations. We do not detect any significant shifts but we obtain 3$\sigma$ upper limits on the acceleration of intrinsic NALs (compared to intervening NALs in same quasars) of $\sim$0.7 km s$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$ ($\sim$0.002 cm s$^{-2}$). We have obtained new observations of the partial Lyman limit absorber at \zabs$=0.93$ towards quasar PG~1206+459, and revisit its chemical and physical conditions. The absorber, with $ N(HI) \sim 10^{17.0}$ ~\sqcm\ and absorption lines spread over $\gtrsim$1000~\kms\ in velocity, is one of the strongest known OVI absorbers at $\log N(OVI)=$15.54$\pm$0.17. Our analysis makes use of the previously known low-(e.g. \MgII), intermediate-(e.g. SiIV), and high-ionization (e.g., CIV, NV, NeVIII) metal lines along with new $HST/$COS observations that cover OVI, and an $HST/$ACS image of the quasar field. Consistent with previous studies, we find that the absorber has a multiphase structure. The low-ionization phase arises from gas with a density of $\log (n_{\rm H}/\rm cm^{-3})\sim-2.5$ and a solar to super-solar metallicity. The high-ionization phase stems from gas with a significantly lower density, i.e. $\log (n_{\rm H}/\rm cm^{-3}) \sim-3.8$, and a near-solar to solar metallicity. The high-ionization phase accounts for all of the absorption seen in CIV, NV, and OVI. We find the the detected \NeVIII, reported by \cite{Tripp2011}, is best explained as originating in a stand-alone collisionally ionized phase at $T\sim10^{5.85}~\rm K$, except in one component in which both OVI and NeVIII can be produced via photoionization. We demonstrate that such strong OVI absorption can easily arise from photoionization at $z\gtrsim1$, but that, due to the decreasing extragalactic UV background radiation, only collisional ionization can produce large OVI features at $z\sim0$. The azimuthal angle of $\sim88$\degree\ of the disk of the nearest ($\rm 68~kpc$) luminous ($1.3L_*$) galaxy at $z_{\rm gal}=0.9289$, which shows signatures of recent merger, suggests that the bulk of the absorption arises from metal enriched outflows., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We performed spectroscopic observations of the small-separation lensed quasar SDSS J1001+5027, whose images have an angular separation $\theta \sim 2.^{\!\!\prime\prime}86$, and placed constraints on the physical properties of gas clouds in the vicinity of the quasar (i.e., in the outflowing wind launched from the accretion disk). The two cylinders of sight to the two lensed images go through the same region of the outflowing wind and they become fully separated with no overlap at a very large distance from the source ($\sim 330$ pc). We discovered a clear difference in the profile of the CIV broad absorption line (BAL) detected in the two lensed images in two observing epochs. Because the kinematic components in the BAL profile do not vary in concert, the observed variations cannot be reproduced by a simple change of ionization state. If the variability is due to gas motion around the background source (i.e., the continuum source), the corresponding rotational velocity is $v_{rot}\geq 18,000$ km/s, and their distance from the source is $r\leq 0.06$ pc assuming Keplerian motion. Among three MgII and three CIV NAL systems that we detected in the spectra, only the MgII system at $z_{abs} = 0.8716$ shows a hint of variability in its MgI profile on a rest-frame time scale of $\Delta t_{rest}$ $\leq 191$ days and an obvious velocity shear between the sightlines whose physical separation is $\sim 7$ kpc. We present a study comparing OVI $\lambda\lambda$1031, 1037 doublet absorption found towards group galaxy environments with that of isolated galaxies. The OVI absorption in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of isolated galaxies has been studied previously by the "Multiphase Galaxy Halos" survey, where the kinematics and absorption properties of the CGM have been investigated. We extend these studies to group environments. We define a galaxy group to have two or more galaxies having a line-of-sight velocity difference of no more than 1000 km/s and located within 350 kpc (projected) of a background quasar sightline. We identified a total of six galaxy groups associated with OVI absorption $W_{\rm r}>0.06$ {\AA} that have a median redshift of $\langle z_{\rm gal} \rangle = 0.1669$ and a median impact parameter of $\langle D \rangle = 134.1$ kpc. An additional 12 non-absorbing groups were identified with a median redshift of $\langle z_{\rm gal} \rangle = 0.2690$ and a median impact parameter of $\langle D \rangle = 274.0$ kpc. We find the average equivalent width to be smaller for group galaxies than for isolated galaxies $(3\sigma)$. However, the covering fractions are consistent with both samples. We used the pixel-velocity two-point correlation function method and find that the velocity spread of OVI in the CGM of group galaxies is significantly narrower than that of isolated galaxies $(10\sigma)$. We suggest that the warm/hot CGM does not exist as a superposition of halos, instead, the virial temperature of the halo is hot enough for OVI to be further ionised. The circumgalactic medium (CGM) traced by OVI $\lambda\lambda 1031, 1037$ doublet absorption has been found to concentrate along the projected major and minor axes of the host galaxies. This suggests that OVI traces accreting and outflowing gas, respectively, which are key components of the baryon cycle of galaxies. We investigate this further by examining the kinematics of 29 OVI absorbers associated with galaxies at $0.13 < z_{\rm gal} < 0.66$ as a function of galaxy color, inclination, and azimuthal angle. Each galaxy was imaged with HST and the absorption was detected in COS/HST spectra of nearby ($D<200$ kpc) background quasars. We use the pixel-velocity two-point correlation function to characterize the velocity spread of the absorbers, which is a method used previously for a sample of MgII absorber--galaxy pairs. The absorption velocity spread for OVI is more extended than MgII, which suggests that the two ions trace differing components of the CGM. Also contrary to MgII, the OVI absorption velocity spreads are similar regardless of galaxy color, inclination, and azimuthal angle. This indicates that the kinematics of the high ionization gas is not strongly influenced by the present star formation activity in the galaxy. The kinematic homogeneity of OVI absorption and its tendency to be observed mainly along the projected galaxy major and minor axes is likely due to varying ionization conditions and gas densities about the galaxy. We exploit the widely-separated images of the lensed quasar SDSS J1029+2623 ($z_{em}$=2.197, $\theta =22^{\prime\prime}\!\!.5$) to observe its outflowing wind through two different sightlines. We present an analysis of three observations, including two with the Subaru telescope in 2010 February (Misawa et al. 2013) and 2014 April (Misawa et al. 2014), separated by 4 years, and one with the Very Large Telescope, separated from the second Subaru observation by $\sim$2 months. We detect 66 narrow absorption lines (NALs), of which 24 are classified as intrinsic NALs that are physically associated with the quasar based on partial coverage analysis. The velocities of intrinsic NALs appear to cluster around values of $v_{ej}$ $\sim$ 59,000, 43,000, and 29,000 km/s, which is reminiscent of filamentary structures obtained by numerical simulations. There are no common intrinsic NALs at the same redshift along the two sightlines, implying that the transverse size of the NAL absorbers should be smaller than the sightline distance between two lensed images. In addition to the NALs with large ejection velocities of $v_{ej}$ > 1,000 km/s, we also detect broader proximity absorption lines (PALs) at $z_{abs}$ $\sim$ $z_{em}$. The PALs are likely to arise in outflowing gas at a distance of r $\leq$ 620 pc from the central black hole with an electron density of $n_e$ $\geq$ 8.7$\times$10$^{3}$ cm$^{-3}$. These limits are based on the assumption that the variability of the lines is due to recombination. Lyman- and Werner-band absorption of molecular hydrogen (H$_2$) is detected in $\sim$50% of low redshift ($z<1$) DLAs/sub-DLAs with $N$(H$_2$) > 10$^{14.4}$ cm$^{-2}$. However the true origin(s) of the H$_2$ bearing gas remain elusive. Here we report a new detection of an H$_{2}$ absorber at $z=$ 0.4298 in the HST/COS spectra of quasar PKS 2128-123. The total $N$(HI) of 10$^{19.50\pm0.15}$ cm$^{-2}$ classifies the absorber as a sub-DLA. H$_{2}$ absorption is detected up to the $J=3$ rotational level with a total $\log N$(H$_{2}$) = 16.36$\pm$0.08 corresponding to a molecular fraction of log $f$(H$_{2}$) = $-$2.84$\pm$0.17. The excitation temperature of $T_{ex}$ = 206$\pm$6K indicates the presence of cold gas. Using detailed ionization modelling we obtain a near-solar metallicity (i.e., [O/H]= $-$0.26$\pm$0.19) and a dust-to-gas ratio of $\log \kappa \sim -0.45$ for the H$_{2}$ absorbing gas. The host-galaxy of the sub-DLA is detected at an impact parameter of $\rho \sim$ 48 kpc with an inclination angle of $i \sim$ 48 degree and an azimuthal angle of $\Phi \sim$ 15 degree with respect to the QSO sightline. We show that co-rotating gas in an extended disk cannot explain the observed kinematics of Mg II absorption. Moreover, the inferred high metallicity is not consistent with the scenario of gas accretion. An outflow from the central region of the host-galaxy, on the other hand, would require a large opening angle (i.e., 2$\theta>$150 degree), much larger than the observed outflow opening angles in Seyfert galaxies, in order to intercept the QSO sightline. We thus favor a scenario in which the H$_2$ bearing gas is stemming from a dwarf-satellite galaxy, presumably via tidal and/or ram-pressure stripping. We report a bimodality in the azimuthal angle ($\Phi$) distribution of gas around galaxies traced by OVI absorption. We present the mean $\Phi$ probability distribution function of 29 HST-imaged OVI absorbing (EW>0.1A) and 24~non-absorbing (EW<0.1A) isolated galaxies (0.08

We present a detailed analysis of a large-scale galactic outflow in the CGM of a massive (M_h ~ 10^12.5 Msun), star-forming (6.9 Msun/yr), sub-L* (0.5 L_B*) galaxy at z=0.39853 that exhibits a wealth of metal-line absorption in the spectra of the background quasar Q 0122-003 at an impact parameter of 163 kpc. The galaxy inclination angle (i=63 degree) and the azimuthal angle (Phi=73 degree) imply that the QSO sightline is passing through the projected minor-axis of the galaxy. The absorption system shows a multiphase, multicomponent structure with ultra-strong, wide velocity spread OVI (logN = 15.16\pm0.04, V_{90} = 419 km/s) and NV (logN = 14.69\pm0.07, V_{90} = 285 km/s) lines that are extremely rare in the literature. The highly ionized absorption components are well explained as arising in a low density (10^{-4.2} cm^{-3}), diffuse (10 kpc), cool (10^4 K) photoionized gas with a super-solar metallicity ([X/H] > 0.3). From the observed narrowness of the Lyb profile, the non-detection of SIV absorption, and the presence of strong CIV absorption we rule out equilibrium/non-equilibrium collisional ionization models. The low-ionization photoionized gas with a density of 10^{-2.5} cm^{-3} and a metallicity of [X/H] > -1.4 is possibly tracing recycled halo gas. We estimate an outflow mass of ~2x10^{10} Msun, a mass-flow rate of ~54 Msun/yr, a kinetic luminosity of ~9x10^{41} erg/s, and a mass loading factor of ~8 for the outflowing high-ionization gas. These are consistent with the properties of "down-the-barrel" outflows from infrared-luminous starbursts as studied by Rupke et al. We report the detection of Ne VIII in a z_abs = 0.59961 absorber towards the QSO PG 1407+265 (z_em = 0.94). Besides Ne VIII, absorption from HI Lyman series lines (HI 1025 - 915), several other low (C II, N II, O II, and S II), intermediate (C III, N III, N IV, O III, S IV, and S V) and high (S VI, O VI, and Ne VIII) ionization metal lines are detected. Disparity in the absorption line kinematics between different ions implies that the absorbing gas comprises of multiple ionization phases. The low and the intermediate ions (except S V) trace a compact (~ 410 pc), metal-rich (Z ~ Z_sun) and over-dense (log n_H ~ -2.6) photoionized region that sustained star-formation for a prolonged period. The high ions, Ne VIII and O VI, can be explained as arising in a low density (-5.3 < log n_H < -5.0), metal-rich (Z > Z_sun) and diffuse (~ 180 kpc) photoionized gas. The S V, S VI and C IV (detected in the FOS spectrum) require an intermediate photoionization phase with -4.2 < log n_H < -3.5. Alternatively, a pure collisional ionization model, as used to explain the previous known Ne VIII absorbers, with 5.65 < log T < 5.72, can reproduce the S VI, O VI, and Ne VIII column densities simultaneously in a single phase. However, even such models require an intermediate phase to reproduce any observable S V and/or C IV. We have monitored 12 intrinsic narrow absorption lines (NALs) in five quasars and seven mini-broad absorption lines (mini-BALs) in six quasars for a period of 4-12 years (1-3.5 years in the quasar rest-frame). We present the observational data and the conclusions that follow immediately from them, as a prelude to a more detailed analysis. We found clear variability in the equivalent widths (EWs) of the mini-BAL systems but no easily discernible changes in their profiles. We did not detect any variability in the NAL systems nor in narrow components that are often located at the center of mini-BAL profiles. Variations in mini-BAL EWs are larger at longer time intervals, reminiscent of the trend seen in variable broad absorption lines. If we assume that the observed variations result from changes in the ionization state of the mini-BAL gas, we infer lower limits to the gas density $\sim$ 10$^3$-10$^5$ cm$^{-3}$ and upper limits on the distance of the absorbers from the central engine of order a few kpc. Motivated by the observed variability properties, we suggest that mini-BALs can vary because of fluctuations of the ionizing continuum or changes in partial coverage while NALs can vary primarily because of changes in partial coverage., Comment: 33 pages, including 30 figures; accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We present an analysis of the diffuse X-ray emission in 19 compact groups of galaxies (CGs) observed with Chandra. The hottest, most X-ray luminous CGs agree well with the galaxy cluster X-ray scaling relations in $L_X-T$ and $L_X-\sigma$, even in CGs where the hot gas is associated with only the brightest galaxy. Using Spitzer photometry, we compute stellar masses and classify HCGs 19, 22, 40, and 42 and RSCGs 32, 44, and 86 as fossil groups using a new definition for fossil systems that includes a broader range of masses. We find that CGs with total stellar and HI masses $\gtrsim10^{11.3}$ M$_\odot$ are often X-ray luminous, while lower-mass CGs only sometimes exhibit faint, localized X-ray emission. Additionally, we compare the diffuse X-ray luminosity against both the total UV and 24 $\mu$m star formation rates of each CG and optical colors of the most massive galaxy in each of the CGs. The most X-ray luminous CGs have the lowest star formation rates, likely because there is no cold gas available for star formation, either because the majority of the baryons in these CGs are in stars or the X-ray halo, or due to gas stripping from the galaxies in CGs with hot halos. Finally, the optical colors that trace recent star formation histories of the most massive group galaxies do not correlate with the X-ray luminosities of the CGs, indicating that perhaps the current state of the X-ray halos is independent of the recent history of stellar mass assembly in the most massive galaxies., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Dynamic interactions between the two Magellanic Clouds have flung large quantities of gas into the halo of the Milky Way, creating the Magellanic Stream, the Magellanic Bridge, and the Leading Arm (collectively referred to as the Magellanic System). In this third paper of a series studying the Magellanic gas in absorption, we analyze the gas ionization level using a sample of 69 Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph sightlines that pass through or within 30 degrees of the 21 cm-emitting regions. We find that 81% (56/69) of the sightlines show UV absorption at Magellanic velocities, indicating that the total cross section of the Magellanic System is ~11 000 square degrees, or around a quarter of the entire sky. Using observations of the Si III/Si II ratio together with Cloudy photoionization modeling, we calculate that the total mass (atomic plus ionized) of the Magellanic System is ~2.0 billion solar masses, with the ionized gas contributing over twice as much mass as the atomic gas. This is larger than the current-day interstellar H I mass of both Magellanic Clouds combined, indicating that they have lost most of their initial gas mass. If the gas in the Magellanic System survives to reach the Galactic disk over its inflow time of ~0.5-1.5 Gyr, it will represent an average inflow rate of ~3.7-6.7 solar masses per year, potentially raising the Galactic star formation rate. We present a census of z(abs) < 2, intrinsic (those showing partial coverage) and associated [z(abs) ~ z(em)] quasar absorption-line systems detected in the Hubble Space Telescope archive of Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph echelle spectra. This work complements the Misawa et al. (2007) survey of 2 < z(em) < 4 quasars that selects systems using similar techniques. We confirm the existence of so-called "strong N V" intrinsic systems (where the equivalent width of H I Ly alpha is small compared to N V 1238) presented in that work, but find no convincing cases of "strong C IV" intrinsic systems at low redshift/luminosity. Moreover, we also report on the existence of "strong O VI" systems. From a comparison of partial coverage results as a function of ion, we conclude that systems selected by the N V ion have the highest probability of being intrinsic. By contrast, the C IV and O VI ions are poor selectors. Of the 30 O VI systems tested, only two of the systems in the spectrum on 3C 351 show convincing evidence for partial coverage. However, there is a 3-sigma excess in the number of absorbers near the quasar redshift (|Delta v| <= 5000 km/s) over absorbers at large redshift differences. Compact groups of galaxies provide conditions similar to those experienced by galaxies in the earlier universe. Recent work on compact groups has led to the discovery of a dearth of mid-infrared transition galaxies (MIRTGs) in IRAC (3.6 - 8.0 micron) color space (Johnson et al. 2007; Walker et al. 2012) as well as at intermediate specific star formation rates (Tzanavaris et al. 2010). However, we find that in compact groups these mid-infrared (mid-IR) transition galaxies in the mid-infrared dearth have already transitioned to the optical ([g-r]) red sequence. We investigate the optical color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of 99 compact groups containing 348 galaxies and compare the optical CMD with mid-IR color space for compact group galaxies. Utilizing redshifts available from SDSS, we identified new galaxy members for 6 groups. By combining optical and mid-IR data, we obtain information on both the dust and the stellar populations in compact group galaxies. We also compare with more isolated galaxies and galaxies in the Coma cluster, which reveals that, similar to clusters, compact groups are dominated by optically red galaxies. While we find that compact group transition galaxies lie on the optical red sequence, LVL+SINGS mid-IR transition galaxies span the range of optical colors. The dearth of mid-IR transition galaxies in compact groups may be due to a lack of moderately star forming low mass galaxies; the relative lack of these galaxies could be due to their relatively small gravitational potential wells. This makes them more susceptible to this dynamic environment, thus causing them to more easily lose gas or be accreted by larger members., Comment: 34 pages, 3 tables, 7 figures. We use archival UV absorption-line data from HST/STIS to statistically analyse the absorption characteristics of the high-velocity clouds (HVCs) in the Galactic halo towards more than 40 extragalactic background sources. We determine absorption covering fractions of low- and intermediate ions (OI, CII, SiIII, MgII, FeII, SiIII, CIV, and SiIV) in the range fc = 0.20 - 0.70. For detailed analysis we concentrate on SiII absorption components in HVCs, for which we investigate the distribution of column densities, b-values, and radial velocities. Combining information for SiII and MgII, and using a geometrical HVC model we investigate the contribution of HVCs to the absorption cross section of strong MgII absorbers in the local Universe. We estimate that the Galactic HVCs would contribute on average ~52 % to the total strong MgII cross section of the Milky Way, if our Galaxy were to be observed from an exterior vantage point. We further estimate that the mean projected covering fraction of strong MgII absorption in the Milky Way halo and disc from an exterior vantage point is fc(sMgII) = 0.31 for a halo radius of R = 61 kpc. These numbers, together with the observed number density of strong MgII absorbers at low redshift, indicate that the contribution of infalling gas clouds (i.e., HVC analogues) in the halos of Milky Way-type galaxies to the cross section of strong MgII absorbers is <34 %. These findings are in line with the idea that outflowing gas (e.g., produced by galactic winds) in the halos of more actively star-forming galaxies dominate the absorption-cross section of strong MgII absorbers in the local Universe.

Isolated compact groups of galaxies (CGs) present a range of dynamical states, group velocity dispersions, and galaxy morphologies with which to study galaxy evolution, particularly the properties of gas both within the galaxies and in the intragroup medium. As part of a large, multiwavelength examination of CGs, we present an archival study of diffuse X-ray emission in a subset of nine Hickson compact groups observed with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We find that seven of the groups in our sample exhibit detectable diffuse emission. However, unlike large-scale emission in galaxy clusters, the diffuse features in the majority of the detected groups are linked to the individual galaxies, in the form of both plumes and halos likely as a result of star formation or AGN activity, as well as in emission from tidal features. Unlike previous studies from earlier X-ray missions, HCGs 31, 42, 59, and 92 are found to be consistent with the Lx-T relationship from clusters within the errors, while HCGs 16 and 31 are consistent with the cluster Lx-sigma relation, though this is likely coincidental given that the hot gas in these two systems is largely due to star formation. We find that Lx increases with decreasing group HI to dynamical-mass ratio with tentative evidence for a dependance in X-ray luminosity on HI morphology whereby systems with intragroup HI indicative of strong interactions are considerably more X-ray luminous than passively evolving groups. We also find a gap in the Lx of groups as a function of the total group specific star formation rate. Our findings suggest that the hot gas in these groups is not in hydrostatic equilibrium and these systems are not low-mass analogs of rich groups or clusters, with the possible exception of HCG 62., Comment: 41 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

(Abridged) Compact groups, with their high number densities, small velocity dispersions, and an interstellar medium that has not been fully processed, provide a local analog to conditions of galaxy interactions in the earlier universe. The frequent and prolonged gravitational encounters that occur in compact groups affect the evolution of the constituent galaxies in a myriad of ways, for example gas processing and star formation. Recently, a statistically significant "gap" has been discovered mid-infrared IRAC colorspace of compact group galaxies. This gap is not seen in field samples and is a new example of how the compact group environment may affect the evolution of member galaxies. In order to investigate the origin and nature of this gap, we have compiled a sample of 49 compact groups. We find that a statistically significant deficit of galaxies in this gap region of IRAC colorspace is persistant in this sample, lending support to the hypothesis that the compact group environment inhibits moderate SSFRs. We note a curvature in the colorspace distribution, which is fully consistent with increasing dust temperature as the activity in a galaxy increases. This full sample of 49 compact groups allows us to subdivide the data according to physical properties of the groups. An analysis of these subsamples indicates that neither projected physical diameter nor density show a trend in colorspace within the values represented by this sample. We hypothesize that the apparent lack of a trend is due to the relatively small range of properties in this sample. Thus, the relative influence of stochastic effects becomes dominant. We analyze spectral energy distributions of member galaxies as a function of their location in colorspace and find that galaxies in different regions of MIR colorspace contain dust with varying temperatures and/or PAH emission., Comment: 24 pages, 13 figures. Compact galaxy groups are at the extremes of the group environment, with high number densities and low velocity dispersions that likely affect member galaxy evolution. To explore the impact of this environment in detail, we examine the distribution in the mid-infrared (MIR) 3.6-8.0 micron colorspace of 42 galaxies from 12 Hickson compact groups in comparison with several control samples, including the LVL+SINGS galaxies, interacting galaxies, and galaxies from the Coma Cluster. We find that the HCG galaxies are strongly bimodal, with statistically significant evidence for a gap in their distribution. In contrast, none of the other samples show such a marked gap, and only galaxies in the Coma infall region have a distribution that is statistically consistent with the HCGs in this parameter space. To further investigate the cause of the HCG gap, we compare the galaxy morphologies of the HCG and LVL+SINGS galaxies, and also probe the specific star formation rate (SSFR) of the HCG galaxies. While galaxy morphology in HCG galaxies is strongly linked to position with MIR colorspace, the more fundamental property appears to be the SSFR, or star formation rate normalized by stellar mass. We conclude that the unusual MIR color distribution of HCG galaxies is a direct product of their environment, which is most similar to that of the Coma infall region. In both cases, galaxy densities are high, but gas has not been fully processed or stripped. We speculate that the compact group environment fosters accelerated evolution of galaxies from star-forming and neutral gas-rich to quiescent and neutral gas-poor, leaving few members in the MIR gap at any time., Comment: 34 pages, 18 figures. We employ detailed photoionization models to infer the physical conditions of intrinsic narrow absorption line systems found in high resolution spectra of three quasars at z=2.6-3.0. We focus on a family of intrinsic absorbers characterized by N V lines that are strong relative to the Ly-alpha lines. The inferred physical conditions are similar for the three intrinsic N V absorbers, with metallicities greater than 10 times the solar value (assuming a solar abundance pattern), and with high ionization parameters (log U ~ 0). Thus, we conclude that the unusual strength of the N V lines results from a combination of partial coverage, a high ionization state, and high metallicity. We consider whether dilution of the absorption lines by flux from the broad-emission line region can lead us to overestimate the metallicities and we find that this is an unlikely possibility. The high abundances that we infer are not surprising in the context of scenarios in which metal enrichment takes place very early on in massive galaxies. We estimate that the mass outflow rate in the absorbing gas (which is likely to have a filamentary structure) is less than a few solar masses per year under the most optimistic assumptions, although it may be embedded in a much hotter, more massive outflow., Comment: To appear in the Astrophysical Journal

Several neutral species (MgI, SiI, CaI, FeI) have been detected in a weak MgII absorption line system (W_r(2796)~0.15 Angstroms) at z~0.45 along the sightline toward HE0001-2340. These observations require extreme physical conditions, as noted in D'Odorico (2007). We place further constraints on the properties of this system by running a wide grid of photoionization models, determining that the absorbing cloud that produces the neutral absorption is extremely dense (~100-1000/cm^3), cold (<100 K), and has significant molecular content (~72-94%). Structures of this size and temperature have been detected in Milky Way CO surveys, and have been predicted in hydrodynamic simulations of turbulent gas. In order to explain the observed line profiles in all neutral and singly ionized chemical transitions, the lines must suffer from unresolved saturation and/or the absorber must partially cover the broad emission line region of the background quasar. In addition to this highly unusual cloud, three other ordinary weak MgII clouds (within densities of ~0.005/cm^3 and temperatures of ~10000K) lie within 500 km/s along the same sightline. We suggest that the "bare molecular cloud", which appears to reside outside of a galaxy disk, may have had in situ star formation and may evolve into an ordinary weak MgII absorbing cloud., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, 4 tables, ApJ accepted

We consider the physical conditions and origin of the z = 0.0777 absorption system observed in C III, C II, Si III, C IV, O VI, and H I absorption along the line of sight towards the quasar PHL 1811. We analysed the HST/STIS and FUSE spectra of this quasar and compared the results to Cloudy photoionization and collisional ionization models in order to derive densities, temperatures, and metallicities of the absorbing gas. The absorption can be explained by two C III clouds, offset by 35 km/s in velocity, with metallicities of ~one-tenth the solar value. One cloud has a density of order n_H = 1.2 +0.9 -0.5 * 10^-3 cm^-3 (thickness 0.4 +0.3 -0.2 kpc) and produces the observed C II and Si III absorption, while the other has a density of order n_H = 1.2 +0.9 -0.5 * 10^-5 cm^-3 (thickness 80 +70 -40 kpc) and gives rise to the observed weak C IV absorption. Cloud temperatures are ~14,000 +3000 -2000 K and ~34,000 -4000 +2000 K for photoionized models. Although collisionally ionized clouds with T ~ 70,000 K are possible, they are less likely because of the short cooling time-scales involved. Previous studies revealed no luminous galaxy at the absorber's redshift, so it is probably related to tidal debris, ejected material, a dwarf galaxy, or other halo material in a galaxy group. Our models also indicate that one of the two clouds would produce detectable weak Mg II absorption if spectral coverage of that transition existed. We predict what the system would look like at z ~ 1 when the ionizing background radiation was more intense. We find that at z ~ 1 the denser component resembles a C IV absorber. We find evidence for accelerated evolution in compact group galaxies from the distribution in mid-infrared colorspace of 42 galaxies from 12 Hickson Compact Groups (HCGs) compared to the the distributions of several other samples including the LVL+SINGS galaxies, interacting galaxies, and galaxies from the Coma Cluster. We find that the HCG galaxies are not uniformly distributed in colorspace, as well as quantitative evidence for a gap. Galaxies in the infall region of the Coma cluster also exhibit a non-uniform distribution and a less well defined gap, which may reflect a similarity with the compact group environment. We measure the physical properties of a local multi-component absorption-line system at V_sol ~ 200 km/s toward the quasar PKS0312-770 behind the Magellanic Bridge (MB) using Hubble Space Telescope STIS spectroscopy in conjunction with photoionization modeling. At an impact parameter of ~ 10 kpc from the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), this sightline provides a unique opportunity to probe the chemical properties and ionization structure in a nearby absorption line system with a column density of logN(HI) ~ 20.2, at the transition between Damped Lyman Alpha (DLA) and sub-DLA systems. We find that metallicity of -1.0 < logZ < -0.5 and ionization parameter of -6 < logU < -5 for three low-ionization components and logU ~ -2.6 for one high-ionization component. One component at V_sol = 207 km/s shows an alpha-element abundance log(Si/H) ~ -5.0, making it ~ 0.2 dex more metal rich than both SMC H II regions and stars within the MB and the SMC. The N/Si ratio in this component is log(N/Si) = -0.3+/-0.1, making it comparable to other N-poor dwarf galaxies and ~ 0.2 dex lower than H II regions in the SMC. Another component at V_sol = 236 km/s shows a similar Si/H ratio but has log(N/Si) = -1.0+/-0.2, indicating a nitrogen deficiency comparable to that seen in the most N-poor DLA systems. These differences imply different chemical enrichment histories between components along the same sightline. Our results suggest that, if these absorbers are representative some fraction of DLA systems, then 1) DLA systems along single sight-lines do not necessarily represent the global properties of the absorbing cloud, and b) the chemical composition within a given DLA cloud may be inhomogeneous., Comment: 28 pages, including 16 figures; accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We report on the detection of a population of weak metal-line absorbers in the halo or nearby intergalactic environment of the Milky Way. Using high-resolution ultraviolet absorption-line spectra of bright QSOs obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS), along six sight lines we have observed unsaturated, narrow absorption in OI and SiII together with mildly saturated CII absorption at high radial velocities (|v_LSR|=100-320 km/s). The measured OI column densities are small, implying that these structures represent Lyman-Limit Systems and sub-Lyman-Limit System with HI column densities < 3x10^18 cm^-2, thus below the detection limits of current 21cm all-sky surveys of high-velocity clouds (HVCs). The absorbers apparently are not directly associated with any of the large high-column density HVC complexes, but rather represent isolated, partly neutral gas clumps embedded in a more tenuous, ionized gaseous medium situated in the halo or nearby intergalactic environment of the Galaxy. We speculate that this absorber population represents the local analog of weak MgII systems that are commonly observed in the circumgalactic environment of low- and high-redshift galaxies., Comment: 45 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present an analysis of the chemical and ionization conditions in a sample of 100 weak Mg II absorbers identified in the VLT/UVES archive of quasar spectra. Using a host of low ionization lines associated with each absorber in this sample, and on the basis of ionization models, we infer that the metallicity in a significant fraction of weak Mg II clouds is constrained to values of solar or higher, if they are sub-Lyman limit systems. Based on the observed constraints, we present a physical picture in which weak Mg II absorbers are predominantly tracing two different astrophysical processes/structures. A significant population of weak Mg II clouds, those in which N(Fe II) is much less than N(Mg II), identified at both low (z ~ 1) and high (z ~ 2) redshift, are potentially tracing gas in the extended halos of galaxies, analogous to the Galactic high velocity clouds. These absorbers might correspond to alpha-enhanced interstellar gas expelled from star-forming galaxies, in correlated supernova events. On the other hand, N(FeII) approximately equal to N(Mg II) clouds, which are prevalent only at lower redshifts (z < 1.5), must be tracing Type Ia enriched gas in small, high metallicity pockets in dwarf galaxies, tidal debris, or other intergalactic structures., Comment: 35 pages (including tables & figures). Through photoionization modeling, constraints on the physical conditions of three z ~ 1.7 single-cloud weak Mg II systems (W_r(2796) < 0.3A) are derived. Constraints are provided by high resolution R = 45,000, high signal-to-noise spectra of the three quasars HE0141-3932, HE0429-4091, and HE2243-6031 which we have obtained from the ESO archive of VLT/UVES. Results are as follows: (1) The single-cloud weak Mg II absorption in the three z ~ 1.7 systems is produced by clouds with ionization parameters of -3.8 < logU < -2.0 and sizes of 1-100 pc. (2) In addition to the low-ionization phase Mg II clouds, all systems need an additional 1-3 high-ionization phase C IV clouds within 100 km/s of the Mg II component. The ionization parameters of the C IV phases range from -1.9 < logU < -1.0, with sizes of tens of parsecs to kiloparsecs. (3) Two of the three single-cloud weak Mg II absorbers have near-solar or super-solar metallicities, if we assume a solar abundance pattern. Although such large metallicities have been found for z < 1 weak Mg II absorbers, these are the first high metallicities derived for such systems at higher redshifts. (4) Two of the three weak Mg II systems also need additional low-metallicity, broad Lya absorption lines, offset in velocity from the metal-line absorption, in order to reproduce the full Lya profile. (5) Metallicity in single-cloud weak Mg II systems are more than an order of magnitude larger than those in Damped Lya systems at z ~ 1.7. In fact, there appears to be a gradual decrease in metallicity with increasing N(HI), from these, the most metal-rich Lya forest clouds, to Lyman limit systems, to sub-DLAs, and finally to the DLAs., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures, accepted by the Astrophysical Journal

We have used archival Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of quasars hosting intrinsic narrow UV absorption lines (intrinsic NALs) to carry out an exploratory survey of their X-ray properties. Our sample consists of three intrinsic-NAL quasars and one "mini-BAL" quasar, plus four quasars without intrinsic absorption lines for comparison. These were drawn in a systematic manner from an optical/UV-selected sample. The X-ray properties of intrinsic-NAL quasars are indistinguishable from those of "normal" quasars. We do not find any excess absorption in quasars with intrinsic NALs, with upper limits of a few times 10^22 cm^-2. We compare the X-ray and UV properties of our sample quasars by plotting the equivalent width and blueshift velocity of the intrinsic NALs and the X-ray spectral index against the "optical-to-X-ray" slope, alpha-ox. When BAL quasars and other AGNs with intrinsic NALs are included, the plots suggest that intrinsic-NAL quasars form an extension of the BAL sequences and tend to bridge the gap between BAL and "normal" quasars. Observations of larger samples of intrinsic-NAL quasars are needed to verify these conclusions. We also test two competing scenarios for the location of the NAL gas in an accretion-disk wind. Our results strongly support a location of the NAL gas at high latitudes above the disk, closer to the disk axis than the dense BAL wind. We detect excess X-ray absorption only in Q0014+8118, which does not host intrinsic NALs. The absorbing medium very likely corresponds to an intervening system at z=1.1, which also produces strong absorption lines in the rest-frame UV spectrum of this quasar.
