Power analysis attacks pose a significant threat to the security of cryptographic devices as they can reveal a secret key. Performing cryptographic operations based on a randomly varying clock (RVC) is a practical countermeasure against such attacks. The countermeasure makes it difficult to align power traces, which is a prerequisite for power analysis attacks to succeed. This paper introduces a synchronous real-time sampling (SRTS) technique as an advanced hardware-implemented approach to collect traces for a power analysis attack that negates countermeasures involving practical RVCs. By recovering the RVC, the leakage signal corresponding to the recovered clock edge is synchronously sampled in real time. We propose an analog-based hardware system implemented with two circuit blocks for SRTS operations, namely, a clock recovery block and an analog signal-processing block. The target of the power analysis attack is an Advanced Encryption Standard (AES)-128 software-implemented smart card operated at 20 MHz, which is varied in the range of 30% by the RVC countermeasure. The traces captured by the SRTS show that the suboperations of the AES encryption are distinct in contrast to the indistinguishable waveforms captured at a fixed sample rate. The results of the power analysis attack demonstrate that the correct key is successfully extracted with a high correlation coefficient at the S-box output of the AES. The proposed SRTS method improves the relative distinguishing margin by 191.4% and reduces the required number of traces to 2.75% compared with the conventional correlation power analysis attack with a fixed sample clock.

Robotic arthroscopy is a potential alternative surgery method because the use of robotic arthroscope manipulators could ensure a constant quality of view that would enhance the workflow of the operator. To achieve this advancement, a workspace derivation for the movement of the arthroscope in the human joint is needed. There is a key requirement for workspace derivation of the arthroscope: the workspace should incorporate all the essential observation sites to ensure a suitable field of view during an arthroscopic surgery for various patients. The workspace could be delineated via workspace measurements on various patients or cadavers; however, this would be an arduous process. Herein, we propose a workspace derivation using morphological measurement data of various human shoulder joints for arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, which is a typical operation in arthroscopy. First, we present the geometrical modeling of the human shoulder joint using morphological parameters and standard portal placement methods. Second, the morphological measurement data of the human joint are substituted for the parameters to determine the workspace required for arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. As a result, we obtain the location of each portal and the workspace of the arthroscope via the portals that incorporate all the essential observation sites. We verify the derived workspace through several cadaveric tests. For all the experimental results, it was confirmed that the $95^{th}$ percentile of the range of motion was formed within the workspace obtained using the proposed method. The results verify that the proposed method is feasible for arthroscopy.

Habenaria cruciformis (Orchidaceae), endemic to South Korea, is a perennial herb and its local population sizes are declined because of the destruction caused by human activity and the invasion of exotic species in their habitats. Here, we report the complete chloroplast (cp) genome sequence of H. cruciformis, which will provide valuable information for its biological conservation and future studies for the cp genome evolution of endemic plants on the Korean Peninsula. The cp genome of H. cruciformis is 155,708 bp in length, containing a large single-copy region of 85,131 bp and a small single-copy region of 17,659 bp which are separated by a pair of inverted repeats of 26,459 bp. The H. cruciformis cp genome encodes 131 genes, of which 113 are unique, including 79 protein-coding genes, 30 tRNA genes, and 4 rRNA genes. The overall GC content is 36.6%, which is consistent with the Habenaria species previously reported. Our phylogenomic analyses identified the sister relationship between H. cruciformis and H. linearfolia in the genus.

Endemic plants are important for understanding phylogenetic relationships, biogeographical history, and genetic variation because of their restricted distribution and their role in conserving biodiversity. Here, we investigated the phylogenetic relationships of the Korean endemic

Allioideae includes economically important bulb crops such as garlic, onion, leeks, and some ornamental plants in Amaryllidaceae. Here, we reported the complete chloroplast genome (cpDNA) sequences of 17 species of Allioideae, five of Amaryllidoideae, and one of Agapanthoideae. These cpDNA sequences represent 80 protein-coding, 30 tRNA, and four rRNA genes, and range from 151,808 to 159,998 bp in length. Loss and pseudogenization of multiple genes (i.e., rps2, infA, and rpl22) appear to have occurred multiple times during the evolution of Alloideae. Additionally, eight mutation hotspots, including rps15-ycf1, rps16-trnQ-UUG, petG-trnW-CCA, psbA upstream, rpl32-trnL-UAG, ycf1, rpl22, matK, and ndhF, were identified in the studied Allium species. Additionally, we present the first phylogenomic analysis among the four tribes of Allioideae based on 74 cpDNA coding regions of 21 species of Allioideae, five species of Amaryllidoideae, one species of Agapanthoideae, and five species representing selected members of Asparagales. Our molecular phylogenomic results strongly support the monophyly of Allioideae, which is sister to Amaryllioideae. Within Allioideae, Tulbaghieae was sister to Gilliesieae-Leucocoryneae whereas Allieae was sister to the clade of Tulbaghieae- Gilliesieae-Leucocoryneae. Molecular dating analyses revealed the crown age of Allioideae in the Eocene (40.1 mya) followed by differentiation of Allieae in the early Miocene (21.3 mya). The split of Gilliesieae from Leucocoryneae was estimated at 16.5 mya. Biogeographic reconstruction suggests an African origin for Allioideae and subsequent spread to Eurasia during the middle Eocene. Cool and arid conditions during the late Eocene led to isolation between African and Eurasian species. African Allioideae may have diverged to South American taxa in the late Oligocene. Rather than vicariance, long-distance dispersal is the most likely explanation for intercontinental distribution of African and South American Allioideae species.

Background Carduus, commonly known as plumeless thistles, is a genus in the Asteraceae family that exhibits both medicinal value and invasive tendencies. However, the genomic data of Carduus (i.e., complete chloroplast genomes) have not been sequenced. Methods We sequenced and assembled the chloroplast genome (cpDNA) sequences of three Carduus species using the Illumina Miseq sequencing system and Geneious Prime. Phylogenetic relationships between Carduus and related taxa were reconstructed using Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference analyses. In addition, we used a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the protein coding region of the matK gene to develop molecular markers to distinguish C. crispus from C. acanthoides and C. tenuiflorus. Results The cpDNA sequences of C. crispus, C. acanthoides, and C. tenuiflorus ranged from 152,342 bp to 152,617 bp in length. Comparative genomic analysis revealed high conservation in terms of gene content (including 80 protein-coding, 30 tRNA, and four rRNA genes) and gene order within the three focal species and members of subfamily Carduoideae. Despite their high similarity, the three species differed with respect to the number and content of repeats in the chloroplast genome. Additionally, eight hotspot regions, including psbI-trnS_GCU, trnE_UUC-rpoB, trnR_UCU-trnG_UCC, psbC-trnS_UGA, trnT_UGU-trnL_UAA, psbT-psbN, petD-rpoA, and rpl16-rps3, were identified in the study species. Phylogenetic analyses inferred from 78 protein-coding and non-coding regions indicated that Carduus is polyphyletic, suggesting the need for additional studies to reconstruct relationships between thistles and related taxa. Based on a SNP in matK, we successfully developed a molecular marker and protocol for distinguishing C. crispus from the other two focal species. Our study provides preliminary chloroplast genome data for further studies on plastid genome evolution, phylogeny, and development of species-level markers in Carduus.

Premise of the study Understanding the underlying mechanisms for the evolution of intercontinental disjunct patterns has long fascinated botanists. We present a molecular phylogenetic reconstruction of Maianthemum s.l. (including Smilacina) with a focus on Maianthemum s.s. species, which have a disjunct distribution between Eurasia and North America. Within this evolutionary framework, we clarify the systematic classification and biogeographical history of Maianthemum s.s. Method Data from two nuclear and five chloroplast DNA regions were analyzed using the programs PAUP*, RAxML, MrBayes, BEAST, and RASP. Key results Our molecular phylogeny supports Maianthemum s.s. as monophyletic. Maianthemum bifolium and M. canadense are grouped according to their taxonomic species, but the accessions of M. dilatatum are divided into two well-defined groups, i.e., one comprising western North American accessions, and the other composed of northeast Asian accessions. Molecular dating and biogeographic reconstructions suggest a northeast Asian origin for Maianthemum s.s. and that a complicated pattern of divergent evolution began approximately in the late Miocene. Intercontinental disjunctions of Maianthemum s.s. in the Northern Hemisphere appear to have occurred two times during the Pliocene. Conclusions Based on our results, two possible ways to treat Maianthemum s.s. species can be envisioned: (1) elevate Asian populations of M. dilatatum to specific rank; or (2) combine the three Maianthemum s.s. species into a broadly defined single species. We recommend treatment of Maianthemum s.s. as a single species. The biogeographic patterns of Maianthemum s.s. coupled with molecular dating suggest both vicariance and long-distance dispersal events as key mechanisms for diversification of the clade.

The hottest news and achievements of space science and research in recent years may be NASA Curiosity rover’s exploration (2013) of Mars, China Chang’e 3’s exploration (2013) of Moon, ESA Rosetta’s exploration (2014) of Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, and NASA New Horizons’ exploration (2015) of Pluto, which are very astonishing achievement since such a deep space journey was possible with current technology. In contrast the wonderful cruise and navigation technologies evolution of explorer in deep space, there are no remarkable changes in deep space data communication, it is still in conservative area, of which much changes are reluctantly accepted so far. But there are some movements of deep space exploration in order to allow ground brilliant technologies to deep space. One of those experiments is internet, whose main topic of this paper. In this paper, we will present the analysis of effectiveness of solar system internet to deep space exploration.

Intercontinental floristic disjunction between East Asia and North America in the Northern Hemisphere has received much attention during the past decades, but few studies have focused on the family level. Melanthiaceae, containing 196 species and 17 genera circumscribed in five tribes, is disjunctly distributed in Eurasia and North America. It is one of the foremost models for studying the evolution of biogeographic patterns in this region. Here, we present a fossil-calibrated, molecular phylogeny of Melanthiaceae based on two chloroplast DNA datasets: one dataset includes extensive sampling (94 species representing all 17 genera of Melanthiaceae) of four chloroplast DNA regions (atpB, rbcL, matK, and ndhF) and the other includes six species representing all tribes of the family for 78 coding genes of the chloroplast genome. Within this framework, we infer the historical biogeography of Melanthiaceae. Both datasets produce well-resolved phylogenies of Melanthiaceae showing the monophyly of the family and the relationships among the five tribes. Melanthieae is found to be sister to the rest of the tribes of the family and the remaining taxa are divided into two major clades consisting of the Chionographideae + Heloniadeae clade and the Parideae + Xerophylleae clade. The molecular dating and the ancestral area analyses suggest that Melanthiaceae most likely originated in North America with its crown group dated at 92.1 mya in the late Cretaceous. The favored ancestral areas at the crown lineages of tribes are also in North America. In the family, seven independent migrations into East Asia from North America are inferred to have occurred in the Oligocene and the Miocene-Pliocene via historical paleo-land bridge connections. Cooling trends during the Oligocene resulted in the present East Asia-North America disjunct distribution, while the warm period during the middle Miocene and habitat heterogeneity stimulated diversification in East Asia. Our study provides the phylogenetic and biogeographical history of the Melanthiaceae and adds an example of “out of North America” migration in the biogeographic history of the Northern Hemisphere.

Background Hybridization is an important evolutionary process that results in increased plant diversity. Flowering Prunus includes popular cherry species that are appreciated worldwide for their flowers. The ornamental characteristics were acquired both naturally and through artificially hybridizing species with heterozygous genomes. Therefore, the genome of hybrid flowering Prunus presents important challenges both in plant genomics and evolutionary biology. Results We use long reads to sequence and analyze the highly heterozygous genome of wild Prunus yedoensis. The genome assembly covers > 93% of the gene space; annotation identified 41,294 protein-coding genes. Comparative analysis of the genome with 16 accessions of six related taxa shows that 41% of the genes were assigned into the maternal or paternal state. This indicates that wild P. yedoensis is an F1 hybrid originating from a cross between maternal P. pendula f. ascendens and paternal P. jamasakura, and it can be clearly distinguished from its confusing taxon, Yoshino cherry. A focused analysis of the S-locus haplotypes of closely related taxa distributed in a sympatric natural habitat suggests that reduced restriction of inter-specific hybridization due to strong gametophytic self-incompatibility is likely to promote complex hybridization of wild Prunus species and the development of a hybrid swarm. Conclusions We report the draft genome assembly of a natural hybrid Prunus species using long-read sequencing and sequence phasing. Based on a comprehensive comparative genome analysis with related taxa, it appears that cross-species hybridization in sympatric habitats is an ongoing process that facilitates the diversification of flowering Prunus. As the utilization rate of smart device increases, various applications for smart device have been developed. Since these applications can contain important data related to user behavio rs in digital forensic perspective, the analysis of them should be conducted in advance. However, lots of applications get to have new data format or type when they are updated. Therefore, whether the applications are updated or not should be checked o ne by one, and if they are, whether their data are changed should be also analyzed. But observing application data repeatedly is a time-consuming task, and that is why the effective method for dealing with this problem is needed. This paper suggests the automatic system which gets updated inf ormation and checks changed data by collecting application information. Zhengyia shennongensis is described here as a new genus and species of the nettle family (Urticaceae) from Hubei province, central China. The phylogenetic position of Z. shennongensis is determined using DNA sequences of nuclear ribosomal ITS and three plastid regions (rbcL, psbA-trnH, trnL-F). Zhengyia shennongensis is readily distinguished from the related genera Urtica, Hesperocnide, and Laportea in the tribe Urticeae by its seed (oblong-globose or subglobose and not compressed achenes, surface densely covered with nipple-shaped protuberances) and stipule morphology (large leaf-like stipules with auriculate and amplexicaulous base and united with stem). Phylogenetic evidence indicates that Zhengyia is a distinct group related to Urtica (including Hesperocnide) species and Laportea cuspidata in tribe Urticeae. The bulbiliferous species of the tribe (L. bulbifera, L. cztspidata, Z. shennongensis) do not form a clade. This result indicates that the bulbil trait evolved in parallel within Urticeae. Our findings highlight the importance of shady and moist habitats in promoting species diversification and the parallel evolution of morphological traits that are likely to be adaptive.

Using a mixed culture of megaspores and microspores from I. coreana, we established high frequency sporophyte regeneration system. After 20 days of culturing in MS basal medium, microscopic examination showed significant morphological changes and the microspore released numerous small vesicles into the culture medium. Megaspores also showed dramatic morphological changes during its incubation time in culture. The spore wall was cracked by the expansion of the megaspore (about 2 times increase in diameter). Simultaneously, brown spots were observed on the surface of the megaspores. The frequency of female gametophytes developing from immature megaspores cultured in MS basal liquid medium (pH 7) supplemented with 1 mgl-1 GA3 was 46%. However, these female gametophytes derived from megaspore only culture could not differentiate into sporophytes. The mixed culture of microspores and megaspores resulted in successful sporophyte regeneration. The highest frequency (12.3%) of green sporophyte regeneration from mixed spore culture occurred when the cultures were maintained at 25℃ under cool-white fluorescent light (40 μmol·m-2·s-1) with a 16 h photoperiod. Regenerated sporophytes were transferred to a test tube containing vermiculite and a sand mixture and left there until they had three leaves. After root growth and the fifth leaf had emerged, more than 95% of the regenerated sporophytes were successfully transferred to the soil and grown to mature plants. The sporophyte regeneration system established in this study could be successfully used for the restoration of the endangered aquatic species, I. coreana.

We investigate statistical side channel analysis attacks on the SEED block cipher implemented in two commercial smart cards used in a real-world electronic payment system. The first one is a contact-only card and the second one is a combination card. Both cards have no masking scheme at algorithm level and the combination card supports only hiding techniques in hardware level. Our results show that an unprotected implementation of SEED allows one to recover the secret key with low number of power or electromagnetic traces. Moreover, this paper clearly confirms that, although hiding countermeasures such as random current and random noise may increase the number of power traces needed for a successful attack, it is difficult to provide sufficient resistance to side channel attacks for itself. We believe that our results in this research will also be beneficial to the analysis and protection of other algorithms and commercial smart cards.

Mazus sunhangii, a new species of Mazaceae from central China is described and illustrated based on evidence from morphology and molecular phylogeny. This new species is morphologically similar to M. puchellus and M. omeiensis but differs in erect habit, inflorescence position, leaf pattern and corolla color. Phylogenetic analysis based on four chloroplast DNA regions (rbcL, rps16, trnL-F, and psbA-trnH) identified the new species as the independent lineage sister to the other East Asian Mazus species. The new species is known only from a single location in Mt. Shennongjia area in northwest Hubei province, at the elevation of 760 m. The species grows on the limestone cliff, and, because a tourist arterial highway is located along this cliff, its habitat can be easily disturbed or destroyed. We propose that the only known species location is recognized as critical habitat (i.e., as the habitat required to ensure the persistence of a species) and the species listed as Critically Endangered based on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List Categories and Criteria B2a.

Over the past few decades, use of molecular markers for species delimitation has drastically increased. Schoenoplectiella Lye has been recognized as a taxonomically difficult genus because of its morphological simplicity and frequent interspecific hybridization. The main objective of this study was to clarify the taxonomic identities of eight Schoenoplectiella species by use of molecular markers. We also evaluated the genetic relationships among S. × trapezoidea, known as a natural hybrid, and its close relatives. We used six microsatellite markers for 44 individuals from 31 natural populations of eight Schoenoplectiella species in South Korea. Six microsatellite marker combinations generated 59 amplification-detectable bands, of which 33 were specifically detected in one or more individuals of each species. Cluster analysis revealed that the grouping was consistent with the taxonomically recognized species. Our results do not support the hybrid origin of S. × trapezoidea. Rather, they suggest that this species is more closely related to S. hotarui. The informative microsatellite markers enabled us to clarify the distinctions among Schoenoplectiella species from South Korea and to identify the genetic relationships among these species. The molecular signatures found suitable for accurate identification of Schoenoplectiella species can be reliably used for studies of the phylogeny and evolution of this genus.

Species identification and analysis of phylogenetic relationships within the genus Typha are difficult because of the high degree of variability among morphological characters and frequent interspecific hybridization. Traditionally, two sections (T. sect. Ebracteolatae and sect. Bracteolatae) have been recognized within the genus based on the presence or absence of bracteoles in the female flowers. The aims of this study were to reconstruct the phylogeny of Typha using DNA sequence data from nuclear LEAFY and three plastid regions, and to evaluate previous classifications. We sampled nine species from various regions that were each invariant at the molecular level. A parsimony consensus tree recovered three clades in the genus: clade I including T. angustifolia, T. elephantina, T. domingensis, and T. capensis; clade II including T. orientalis and T. laxmunni; and clade III comprising T. latifolia and T. shuttleworthii. Typha minima was found sister to the rest of the Typha species with maximal bootstrap support. The results do not support previous classifications of Typha. Character analysis showed that bracteole loss, spatulate stigma, lack of a gap between staminate and pistillate inflorescences, and monad pollen are derived characteristics in Typha.

 Premise of the study: Two marker systems were developed for the molecular identifi cation of three Trapa species based on the length variation of nuclear AP2 and trnL-F chloroplast intergenic spacer region.  Methods and Results: Our marker systems analyzed 118 individuals among 36 populations from three Trapa species. Trapa incisa was found to have a unique genotype from the other two species. Individuals of T. bispinosa were distinguished from T. japonica because the former had only a single AP2 genotype. Moreover, our results suggest a hybrid status of T. japonica in terms of two bands within an individual. One band was specifi c to T. japonica and the other one shared with T. bispinosa .  Conclusions: Our marker system demonstrates that nucleotide sequence variations can serve as a fast, reliable, and reproducible tool for molecular genotyping and examining the natural hybrid of water chestnut species.

An undescribed species of Isoetes (Isoetaceae) was found during a floristic survey in Lao PDR. This Laotian species is distinctive enough to identify it as a separate species from the related taxon I. coromandelina by its megaspore characteristics, polyhedral shape, large tubercules on proximal and distal surfaces, and the uniform size. We propose I. laosiensis as a new species from South East Asia (Laos).

Isoetes L. is critically endangered in areas of East Asia, including Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea. The genetic diversity and the population structure of six Isoetes species from East Asia were evaluated by using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP). Three AFLP‐selective primer combinations generated a total 923 amplification products, of which 919 (99.6%) were polymorphic. We investigated the ecological characteristics of reed populations growing in Korea and tried to select reed populations showing better growth patterns in waste landfill leachate. To examine the growth characteristics, 14 reed populations from various habitats were collected. Four reed populations were from inland reclaimed habitats, 4 reed populations from brackish or salt marsh habitats, and 6 reed populations from fresh water habitats. Total plant biomass after the treatment with landfill leachate showed that Daebudo and Nanjido reed populations had the higher biomass with 3755 g DW/pot and 3305 g DW/pot, respectively. Reed populations being sampled from the higher salinity and landfill habitats had relatively higher total biomass than that of other reed populations. Especially reed populations from landfill habitats showed higher biomass. Reed populations from Songjiho and Daebudo, which were believed to have tolerance to salt stress, also showed good growth patterns. Population from the fresh water habitats exhibited relatively lower tolerance to leachate treatment compared to others. From the results, we could conclude that reed populations from Nanjido and Daebudo with higher biomass and better salt tolerance were able to good candidates for purification of waste landfill leachate.

In this paper, we first investigate the side channel analysis attack resistance of various FPGA hardware implementations of the ARIA block cipher. The analysis is performed on an FPGA test board dedicated to side channel attacks. Our results show that an unprotected implementation of ARIA allows one to recover the secret key with a low number of power or electromagnetic measurements. We also present a masking countermeasure and analyze its second-order side channel resistance by using various suitable preprocessing functions. Our experimental results clearly confirm that second-order differential side channel analysis attacks also remain a practical threat for masked hardware implementations of ARIA.

Despite considerable progress, many details regarding the evolution of the Arcto-Tertiary flora, including the timing, direction, and relative importance of migration routes in the evolution of woody and herbaceous taxa of the Northern Hemisphere, remain poorly understood. Meehania (Lamiaceae) comprises seven species and five subspecies of annual or perennial herbs, and is one of the few Lamiaceae genera known to have an exclusively disjunct distribution between eastern Asia and eastern North America. We analyzed the phylogeny and biogeographical history of Meehania to explore how the Arcto-Tertiary biogeographic hypothesis and two possible migration routes explain the disjunct distribution of Northern Hemisphere herbaceous plants. Parsimony and Bayesian inference were used for phylogenetic analyses based on five plastid sequences (rbcL, rps16, rpl32-trnH, psbA-trnH, and trnL-F) and two nuclear (ITS and ETS) gene regions. Divergence times and biogeographic inferences were performed using Bayesian methods as implemented in BEAST and S-DIVA, respectively. Analyses including 11 of the 12 known Meehania taxa revealed incongruence between the chloroplast and nuclear trees, particularly in the positions of Glechoma and Meehania cordata, possibly indicating allopolyploidy with chloroplast capture in the late Miocene. Based on nrDNA, Meehania is monophyletic, and the North American species M. cordata is sister to a clade containing the eastern Asian species. The divergence time between the North American M. cordata and the eastern Asian species occurred about 9.81 Mya according to the Bayesian relaxed clock methods applied to the combined nuclear data. Biogeographic analyses suggest a primary role of the Arcto-Tertiary flora in the study taxa distribution, with a northeast Asian origin of Meehania. Our results suggest an Arcto-Tertiary origin of Meehania, with its present distribution most probably being a result of vicariance and southward migrations of populations during climatic oscillations in the middle Miocene with subsequent migration into eastern North America via the Bering land bridge in the late Miocene.

One of Korean Typha species has been used two scientific names, T. angustifolia L. and T. angustata Bory et Chaubard without taxonomic examinations. Typha angustifolia has a longer females flowers than bracteoles and equal length of bracteoles and hairs in female flowers whereas T. angustata has equal length of female flowers and bracteoles and longer bracteloes than hairs in female flowers. In this study, the pattern of morphological variation of T. angustifolia in Korea is examined using numerical analysis to determine their taxonomical identities. Univariate analysis using morphological characters such as female flower length/bracteole length and bracteole lengh/hair length reveals that Korean T. angustifolia is composed of one group. The result of principal components analysis shows that Korean T. angustifolia is closely related to T. angustifolia distributed in Japan, Russia, and USA. Therefore, T. angustifolia L. (in Korea) is suggested as a legitimate scientific name.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requires that all electric utilities develop and update evacuation plans for the areas surrounding their nuclear power plants. The evacuation of people around these plants has certain peculiar transportation-related characteristics, such as the location of the incident is fixed, the evacuation area is predetermined by NRC, and all the inhabitants must be evacuated from the affected area. These characteristics pose a challenge to evacuation planners and modelers. The developed evacuation models should incorporate these characteristics and address the peculiarities of the evacuation process. Hobeika et al. have developed a mass evacuation computer program (MASSVAC 3.0) that models the evacuation process and utilizes the traffic assignment of all-or-nothing and Dial's algorithm to simulate the traffic movements during evacuation. The objective of this paper is to describe the upgrade of MASS-VAC 3.0 to MASSVAC 4.0, which incorporates new modeling features such as the user equilibrium (UE) assignment algorithm, which was not available in MASSVAC 3.0. The focus of this paper, however, is on comparing the assignment results of Dial's algorithm with the UE algorithm using performance measures such as the evacuation time, the number of congested links, and the computer execution time. The results show that the evacuation performance measures are largely dependent on the highway network structure and the number of vehicles produced in an emergency planning zone, Generally, it was found that the UE algorithm was more efficient than the Dial's algorithm in the three performance measures mentioned above.

Premise of the study: Ten polymorphic chloroplast microsatellite (cpSSR) markers were developed and characterized in an endemic and endangered herb, Maianthemum bicolor (Asparagaceae s.l.), for use in conservation genetics. Methods and Results: Primer sets flanking each of the 10 cpSSR loci in noncoding regions of the chloroplast genome of M. bicolor were designed. These cpSSR markers were tested on a total of 33 adult individuals from three natural populations in South Korea. The number of alleles per locus ranged from two to three. The unbiased haplotype diversity per locus ranged from 0.061 to 0.682. All markers were successfully transferred to the congeneric species M. japonicum, M. bifolium, and M. dilatatum with polymorphisms among the species. Conclusions: The developed cpSSR markers will be useful in assessing the genetic diversity and population structure of M. bicolor and will help to infer its molecular identification, thereby providing a basis for conservation.

Polyploidy plays an important role in the speciation of Isoetes. Increasing our knowledge about the specific origin of each polyploid or phylogenetic relationship among species has been hampered because of conserved morphological variation and scarce habitats. We present several hypotheses concerning the speciation pathways of Isoetes species distributed in East Asia. Our hypotheses are inferred from phylogenetic relationships that were elucidated using sequences of the internal transcribed spacer regions of nuclear ribosomal DNA, a second intron of LEAFY, and chloroplast DNA trnS-psbC spacer regions. These inferred phylogenetic relationships indicated that (1) the Chinese tetraploid, I. sinensis, is closely related to I. yunguiensis; (2) the Korean endemic species, I. hallasanensis, is an autotetraploid derived from I. taiwanensis or closely related taxa; (3) the hexaploid I. coreana forms a clade and has its closest evolutionary relationships with I. taiwanensis or I. hallasanensis; and (4) the Japanese hexaploid I. japonica is closely related to I. taiwanensis-I. coreana and I. sinensis-I. yunguiensis. These results suggest that interspecific hybridization and polyploidization have played central roles in speciation of East Asian Isoetes. Furthermore, I. taiwanensis, an endemic species in Taiwan, has been involved in at least three cases of autopolyploid or allopolyploid speciation in East Asia.

Purpose This study was conducted to determine the distributions of the polyp detection rate (PDR) and the adenoma detection rate (ADR) according to age by analyzing the polypectomy results. Methods A total of 10,098 patients who underwent a colonoscopy in 2013 were included in this study. Chi-square and logistic regression statistical analyses were performed using SPSS ver. 19. Results The mean age of the patients was 52.7 years old (median, 54 ± 12.52 years; range, 14 to 92 years). A total of 6,459 adenomatous polyps (61.7%) from a total of 10,462 polyps were eliminated. The PDR was 50.9% (5,136/10,098), and the. ADR was 35.4% (3,579/10,098). The male-to-female ratio was 51.3%:48.7%, with a male-to-female ADR ratio of 42.8% : 27.7% (P < 0.001). In the age distribution, the values of the ADR were 0% for patients in their 10's, 6.3% for those in their 20's, 14.0% for those in their 30's, 28.7% for those in their 40's, 38.4% for those in their 50's, 46.2% for those in their 60's, 55.8% for those in their 70's, 56.1% for those in their 80's, and 33.3% for those in their 90's. In males, the values of the ADR were 0%, 9.1%, 17.1%, 37.8%, 48.2%, 53.6%, 61.7%, 59.1%, and 33.3% for the same age distribution, and a steep increase was found between patients in their 30's and patients in their 40's. Significant (P < 0.001) factors influencing the ADR included sex, previous colonoscopy experience, polypectomy method, and age of more than 40 years. Conclusion In considering the adenoma carcinoma sequence, 28.7% of people, especially 37.8% of males in their 40's showed adenomatous polyps. Whether an earlier first-time colonoscopy will have better results in preventing colorectal cancer should be investigated and discussed.
