Crop domestication has revolutionized food production but increased agriculture’s reliance on fertilizers and pesticides. We investigate differences in the rhizosphere microbiome functions of wild and domesticated rice, focusing on nitrogen (N) cycling genes. Shotgun metagenomics and real-time PCR reveal a higher abundance of N-fixing genes in the wild rice rhizosphere microbiomes. Validation through transplanting rhizosphere microbiome suspensions shows the highest nitrogenase activity in soils with wild rice suspensions, regardless of planted rice type. Domesticated rice, however, exhibits an increased number of genes associated with nitrous oxide (N2O) production. Measurements of N2O emissions in soils with wild and domesticated rice are significantly higher in soil with domesticated rice compared to wild rice. Comparative root metabolomics between wild and domesticated rice further show that wild rice root exudates positively correlate with the frequency and abundance of microbial N-fixing genes, as indicated by metagenomic and qPCR, respectively. To confirm, we add wild and domesticated rice root metabolites to black soil, and qPCR shows that wild rice exudates maximize microbial N-fixing gene abundances and nitrogenase activity. Collectively, these findings suggest that rice domestication negatively impacts N-fixing bacteria and enriches bacteria that produce the greenhouse gas N2O, highlighting the environmental trade-offs associated with crop domestication.Domestication of crops has boosted food production but increased dependence on fertilizers and pesticides. The emerged wurtzite (wz) Al1−xBxN alloy has drawn increasing attention due to its superior ferroelectricity and excellent compatibility with microelectronics. We find that the stability and ferroelectric switching pathways of wz-Al1−xBxN alloys are affected by the orbital contribution, covalent bond strength, and elastic constant C14. As the concentration of B increases, the internal parameter u decreases while the elastic constant C14 increases, leading to an increase in spontaneous polarization and a decrease in the polarization switching barrier. The spontaneous polarization, polarization switching barrier, and band gap of wz-Al1−xBxN alloy can be further improved through the application of strain in a specific direction, resulting in a giant ferroelectricity. Additionally, the phase transformation of the wz-Al1−xBxN alloy induced by the increasing B composition can be regarded as a sequential process involving shrinkage, rotation, and deformation of tetrahedron. These findings give a deep understanding of the ferroelectric wz-Al1−xBxN alloy, and provide a guideline for designing a high-performance ferroelectric wz-Al1−xBxN alloy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Highlights: Turning trash into treasure: The outstanding tunable aerogels were fabricated via heterodimensional by-products of silver nanowires. The first tunable form, aerogel film, shields electromagnetic interference (EMI SE > 89 dB), while the second tunable form, aerogel foam, performs dual EM functions (EMI SE > 30 dB and RL < -35 dB, EAB > 6.7 GHz). Recycle again: The secondary recycled aerogels retain nearly all of their EM protection qualities, making this closed-loop cycle desirable.One of the significant technological challenges in safeguarding electronic devices pertains to the modulation of electromagnetic (EM) wave jamming and the recycling of defensive shields. The synergistic effect of heterodimensional materials can effectively enable the manipulation of EM waves by altering the nanostructure. Here we propose a novel approach for upcycling by-products of silver nanowires that can fabricate shape-tunable aerogels which enable the modulation of its interaction with microwaves by heterodimensional structure of by-products. By-product heterodimensionality was used to design EM-wave-jamming-dissipation structures and therefore two typical tunable aerogel forms were studied. The first tunable form was aerogel film, which shielded EM interference (EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) > 89 dB) and the second tunable form was foam, which performed dual EM functions (SE > 30 dB& reflective loss (RL) < -35 dB, effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) > 6.7 GHz). We show that secondary recycled aerogels retain nearly all of their EM protection properties, making this type of closed-loop cycle an appealing option. Our findings pave the way for the development of adaptive EM functions with nanoscale regulation in a green and closed-loop cycle, and they shed light on the fundamental understanding of microwave interactions with heterodimensional structures. Cytokinins (CKs) are a class of phytohormones identified in the early 1960s and are mainly responsible for stimulating cell division. Following the discovery, research to help understand the pluralistic roles of CKs in plant growth and stress biology increased. With their fascinating ability, CKs serve as an important element in regulating the defense–growth trade-off. Herein, we demonstrate how the CK fine-tuning the organogenesis of different parts of horticultural plants is discussed. CK's role in tailoring reproductive biology (flowering, sex differentiation, fruit set, and fruit attributes) has been presented. An extensive explanation of the CK-mediated response of horticultural crops to abiotic (temperature, drought, and salinity) and biotic stresses (fungal, bacterial, and nematodes) is provided. In plants, calcium (Ca) serves as an essential nutrient and signaling molecule. Melatonin is a biologically active and multi-functional hormone that plays an important role in improving nutrient use efficiency. However, its involvement in plant responses to Ca deficiency remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to assess the effects of melatonin on Ca absorption, the antioxidant system, and root morphology under low-Ca (LCa) stress conditions, as well as to identify key regulatory factors and signaling pathways involved in these processes using transcriptome analysis. Under LCa conditions, wax gourd seedling exhibited significant decreases in Ca accumulation, showed inhibition of root growth, and demonstrated the occurrence of oxidative damage. However, melatonin application significantly enhanced Ca content in wax gourd seedlings, and it enhanced the absorption of Ca2+ in roots by upregulating Ca2+ channels and transport genes, including BhiCNGC17, BhiCNGC20, BhiECA1, BhiACA1, and BhiCAX1. Furthermore, the application of exogenous melatonin mitigated the root growth inhibition and oxidative damage caused by LCa stress. This was evidenced by increases in the root branch numbers, root tips, root surface area, and root volume, as well as enhanced root vitality and antioxidant enzyme activities, as well as decreases in the reactive oxygen species content in melatonin treated plants. Transcriptome results revealed that melatonin mainly modulated the brassinosteroids (BRs) and auxin signaling pathway, which play essential roles in root differentiation, elongation, and stress adaptation. Specifically, melatonin increased the active BR levels by upregulating BR6ox (a BR biosynthesis gene) and downregulating BAS1 (BR degradation genes), thereby affecting the BR signaling pathway. Additionally, melatonin reduced IAA levels but activated the auxin signaling pathway, indicating that melatonin could directly stimulate the auxin signaling pathway via an IAA-independent mechanism. This study provides new insights into the role of melatonin in nutrient stress adaptation, offering a promising and sustainable approach to improve nutrient use efficiency in wax gourd and other crops. Fruit color is a crucial attribute of fruit quality in peppers (Capsicum spp.). However, few studies have focused on the mechanism of color formation in immature pepper fruits. In this study, the light-yellow color observed in immature CSJ009 fruits compared to CSJ010 could be attributed to decreased chlorophyll and carotenoid pigments. Through integrated analysis of the transcriptome and metabolome of CSJ009 and CSJ010, we identified 23,930 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 345 differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs). Furthermore, integrated analysis revealed a strong correlation between the HCT-like gene and metabolite MWS0178 (chlorogenic acid). Paraffin section assay revealed that the epidermal cells of immature CSJ010 fruits exhibited a more compact arrangement with significantly greater length than those of CSJ009. Quantitative determination of carotenoids showed that lutein emerged as the predominant carotenoid in immature pepper fruits. Additionally, missense mutation of LCYB2 is likely to lead to a decrease in β -carotene content in immature CSJ009 fruits, whereas CCS may directly catalyze the conversion of lycopene to β -carotene in mature fruits. The null mutation in CCS promoted the biosynthesis of β,ϵ -branch carotenoids leading to lutein being the most abundant carotenoid found in orange CSJ010 fruits. These findings provide important insights into the mechanism underlying color formation in pepper fruits and establish a foundation for the further exploration of color-related genes. The three-amino-loop-extension (TALE) family involves key transcription factors vital for maintaining different aspects of growth including leaf, flower, and fruit development and responses to stressful stimulus. Thus far, a deep understanding of the TALE gene family in wax gourd subjected to low calcium and magnesium stress has been missing. Here, we isolated 24 BhTALE genes from a wax gourd genome database. Comprehensive bioinformatic analysis, including evolutionary tree, gene structures, conserved motifs, and chemical properties, provide structural and functional insights into the BhTALE gene family. Gene ontology (GO) analysis of TALE genes unveils their involvement in growth and stress responses. Promoter analysis indicates that hormones and stresses can influence the expression of BhTALE genes. Tissue-specific expression under low calcium and magnesium stress showed that BhTALE genes were more active in the leaves and roots. Notably, BhTALE7, BhTALE10, and BhTALE14 were expressed differentially in leaves under low calcium and magnesium applications. Similarly, the induced expression pattern of BhTALE4 was recorded in the roots under low calcium and magnesium applications.
