BackgroundEarly excess and inadequate gestational weight gain (GWG) have been associated with negative outcomes for mother and child. The use of digital media to deliver pregnancy lifestyle interventions is increasing, but there is little data on participant engagement. The Pregnancy Lifestyle Activity and Nutrition (PLAN) intervention pilot study was an electronic health and dietetic-delivered intervention program promoting healthy GWG in early pregnancy. ObjectiveThis study aims to explore the interactions of participants with the program and to assess its acceptability. MethodsThis study uses both quantitative and qualitative methods using data from parent randomized controlled trial (ACTRN12617000725369). Quantitative data from 22 participants in the intervention arm who completed the study provided measures of the interactions participants had with the digital components of the program and with dietetic consultations. A descriptive qualitative analysis employed semistructured interviews with 9 participants to elicit views on the acceptability of the intervention and its components. ResultsThe electronic delivery of information and recording of weight from 8 to 20 weeks of gestation were universally accepted. Component (face-to-face dietitian, weight tracker, website information delivery, and SMS goal prompting) acceptability and engagement differed between individuals. A total of 4 key themes emerged from the qualitative analysis: supporting lifestyle change, component acceptability and value, delivery platforms, and engagement barriers. ConclusionsThe PLAN intervention and its delivery via a blend of personal dietetic consultations and digital program delivery was found to be acceptable and valuable to pregnant women. Individuals responded differently to various components, emphasizing the importance of including women in the development of lifestyle interventions and allowing participants to choose and tailor programs. Larger randomized controlled trials using these insights in a broader section of the community are needed to inform the iterative development of practical, time-efficient, and cost-effective ways of supporting optimal GWG with the potential to optimize outcomes for pregnant women and their child.

Endometriosis is a common gynecological disorder affecting approximately 10% of women of reproductive age who often experience chronic pelvic pain and infertility. Laparoscopy, which is invasive and expensive, is the gold standard for diagnosis of endometriosis. A simple minimallyinvasive test for endometriosis-specific biomarkers which is yet to be realized would offer a timely and accurate diagnosis for the disease thereby allowing early treatment intervention. Although aberrant microRNA expression has been implicated in endometriosis in several studies, conflicting results have been reported. This study hypothesized that the use of an appropriate animal model will provide a unique entry point for the discovery of biomarkers for early diagnosis of endometriosis. The study aimed at identifying miRNAs that are differentially expressed in eutopic endometrium of induced endometriosis in Papio anubis for early detection of endometriosis. Female adult baboons (n = 3) were induced with endometriosis by intraperitoneal inoculation of autologous menstrual endometrium. We sequenced small RNA samples obtained from normal (control) and diseased eutopic endometrium. Quality reads from the sequences were subjected to differential expression analysis to identify dysregulated microRNAs and genes from other non-coding small RNA in the samples using a bioinformatics approach. Through in silico analysis, gene targets of the dysregulated miRNA and their functions were determined. Our findings show significant high expression of seven microRNAs namely miR-199a-3p, miR-145-5p, miR-214-3p, miR-143-3p, miR-125b-5p, miR-199a-5p and miR-10b-5p. The study also reveals five microRNAs that were significantly down regulated and they include miR-29b-3p, miR-16-5p, miR-342-3p, miR-378a-3p and let-7g-5p. Seventeen genes from non-coding small RNAs were significantly dysregulated. The dysregulated microRNAs and genes play important roles in pathogenesis of endometriosis. Our findings indicate that specific miRNA signatures are associated with endometriosis, and the dysregulated miRNAs could constitute new and informative biomarkers for early diagnosis of endometriosis. Gutierrez and Kelly (2008) recently documented momentum in weekly returns. Using the Australian market as a setting, we find that stocks with high 1-week returns exhibit a continuation in returns up to 1 year after a brief initial return reversal. However, after controlling for the intermediate-horizon past performance, the continuation in returns after 1-week returns disappears. These findings suggest that different past investment horizons contain separate information about price momentum and that intermediate-term trends dominate short-term trends in driving future returns. Overall, we show that understanding momentum over different horizons facilitates the design of more profitable trading strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Utilising a comprehensive data set for Australian firms, we examine a range of competing asset-pricing models, including the four- and five-factor models where the equity-risk premium is augmented by size, value, momentum and liquidity premia, and find that none of the models tested appears to adequately explain the cross section of Australian returns. A model accounting for Australia's integration with the US equity market appears to be the best of the competing models we study. Our argument that a model recognising Australia's integration with the USA is supported when we apply the portfolio and factor construction methodology suggested by Brailsford et al. (2012a,b). Small stocks tend to reverse, whereas large stocks tend to trend over a one-month horizon, which explains the lack of short-term reversals in the Australian market as a whole. However, large stocks exhibit intra-industry reversals, in which industry winners underperform industry losers in the subsequent month, when controlling for price momentum. Conversely, once this intra-industry reversal is neutralised, large stocks display momentum behaviour, in which market winners outperform market losers. These conditional strategies generate positive, significant risk-adjusted returns on large stocks in Australia. This paper documents significant industry momentum, as winning industries outperform losing industries in the following month. This industry momentum effect dominates the intra-industry reversal. The paper also finds evidence that conditional reversals are driven by illiquidity and are inhibited by stock prices under-reacting to earnings announcements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using evidence from pairs trading in Australia's equity market, we study the effect of the 2008 worldwide ban on short selling on the Law of One Price (LOP). We find that the ban surprisingly does not hinder the enforcement of the LOP. Violations did arise rather frequently in the turbulent market during the ban period; however, they were subsequently corrected, with prices of close economic substitutes promptly converging to parity. We show that the working of the LOP is not driven by professional arbitrageurs. We suggest that rational, long-only investors are likely to be the enforcer of the LOP, as these investors who are unbound by the ban, simply sell their holdings of stocks that are overpriced relative to their close economic substitutes. In 2009, experimental Cyclospora infections were established in two juvenile female and two adult male Cercopithecus aethiops (African green monkeys) at Nairobi's Institute of Primate Research (IPR). The study animals were humanely sacrificed, and gross and histopathological evaluation was done at seven weeks post-infection. On gross examination, the juveniles had no abnormalities except for a slight enlargement of the mesenteric lymph nodes, while the adults displayed more pathology of enlarged lymph nodes, hemorrhagic gastrointestinal tracts, widespread necrotic foci of the liver, and enlarged spleens. Significant histopathological findings were observed in both the juveniles and adults, which ranged from mild inflammatory reactions in the stomach and intestines to intense cellular infiltrations with mitotic activity and lymphocytic infiltrations around the periportal area of the livers. A prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled study was conducted in a baboon model to determine if a thiazolidinedione agonist of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma, pioglitazone, can impede the development of endometriosis. Endometriosis was induced using laparoscopic, intrapelvic injection of eutopic menstrual endometrium, previously incubated with placebo or pioglitazone for 30 min, in 12 female baboons with a normal pelvis that had undergone at least one menstrual cycle since the time of captivity. At this point, the 12 baboons were randomized into two groups and treated from the day of induction. They received either PBS tablets (n = 6, placebo control, placebo tablets once a day by mouth) or pioglitazone (n = 6, test drug, 7.5 mg by mouth each day). A second and final laparoscopy was performed in the baboons to record the extent of endometriotic lesions between 24 and 42 d after induction (no difference in length of treatment between the two groups, P = 0.38). A videolaparoscopy was performed to document the number and surface area of endometriotic lesions. The surface area and volume of endometriotic lesions were significantly lower in pioglitazone treated baboons than the placebo group (surface area, 48.6 vs. 159.0 mm(2), respectively, P = 0.049; vol, 23.7 vs. 131.8 mm(3), respectively, P = 0.041). The surface area (3.5 vs. 17.8 mm(2), P = 0.017, pioglizatone vs. placebo) and overall number (1.5 vs. 9.5, P = 0.007, pioglizatone vs. placebo) of red lesions were lower in the pioglitazone group. A peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma ligand, pioglitazone, effectively reduced the initiation of endometriotic disease in the baboon endometriosis model. Using this animal model, we have shown that thiazolidinedione is a promising drug for preventive treatment of endometriosis.
