String quartet ,classical music ,violin ,viola ,cello - Abstract
Composed in 2020, this string quartet is fun and playful, for both the performers and audience to enjoy. Romp! is meant to get people's feet tapping and be a happy distraction. In rondo form, Romp! opens with a jaunty melody in the first violin. This rondo theme is interspersed with a wistful waltz, and then later with a hoe-down, and American-West inspired dance. String effects include glissandi and the cello being strummed as a guitar. The melodies are all original, and are supported by various harmonic structures to give the piece edge and vitality. Romp! builds in momentum to a rousing finish.

CELLO ,ROBOTICS ,MACHINERY - Abstract
This study investigates the influence of string properties on bowed string attack playability. To assess the attack playability of different string types, a variety of bow forces and bow accelerations were chosen to excite the strings and measure the transient response under different bowing control parameters. The experimentally obtained playability maps of transient duration as function of bow force and acceleration (Guettler diagram) were obtained with a robotic bowing machine, from four different types of cello G2 strings. Results indicate variations in playability across string types, suggesting that string properties impact attack duration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The focus of this article is the actualization of the cello in the rock music of the 20th century and further performance modifications associated with this instrument in the 21st century. The article examines changes in the design features of the instrument itself (electric cello), the birth of cello rock (Electric Light Orchestra) and the cello boom in rock music in the 1990s-2000s (Apocalyptica and other bands), and from this perspective, it touches upon some aspects of creative work and features of the performing manner of some rock group musicians. Particular attention is paid to the creative activity of the Balkan duo 2CELLOS. Having done a detailed historical and cultural review of this musical phenomenon, the author draws a conclusion about the organic inclusion of cello rock in the musical culture of the 20th — 21st centuries.

CELLO sonatas , *CONCERTS , *CELLO , *CELLISTS , *REGIONALISM - Abstract
This article proposes to reveal a connection between José Siqueira and the Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich through musical elements present in the II Sonata for Cello and Piano (1972). We’ve explored the cello literature from that period, as well as elements that came to influence Siqueira in his compositional process. Based on Siqueira (1981), Aquino (2006), Santos (2016), and Silva (2023), we suggest the presence of sonorities that are similar to musical gestures from Britten’s First and Third Solo Suites — Siqueira’s contemporary and Rostropovich’s personal friend. Through a comparative study of excerpts, it is possible to perceive important compositional traits in Siqueira’s output, in addition to those from the cultural manifestations of the music of the Brazilian Northeast, as a dualism between regionalism and elements from the European concert music. Thus, we present a more comprehensive perspective of Siqueira’s compositional style, denoting that the connection between Siqueira and Rostropovich goes beyond a dedicatory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MUSIC education ,WOMEN musicians - Abstract
Based on interviews with fourteen Finnish women classical music students and graduates from Finnish higher music education institutions, this article sheds light on the under-researched subject of emotional abuse in classical music education. Emotional abuse is defined as patterned deliberate non-contact behavior, such as verbal abuse and emotional neglect (Stirling and Kerr 2008). In this research, such behavior included maleficent and/or demeaning comments; unwarranted anger; humiliation; harmful comparison; denial of approval, attention, or support; and intentionally setting up a student for failure. First, I ask in what ways beliefs and values specific to classical music culture partly allow for emotional abuse. Second, I explore how the understandings and theories of Gatens (1996/2003) and Tännsjö (2000) can be applied to explain how beliefs, representations, images, symbols, and narratives specific to classical music culture allow for the prevalence of emotional abuse by impacting norms of behavior that may leave individuals prone to both participating in and accepting emotionally abusive behavior. Audio auto-tagging is the process of assigning labels to audio clips for better categorization and management of audio file databases. With the advent of advanced artificial intelligence technologies, there has been increasing interest in directly using raw audio data as input for deep learning models in order to perform tagging and eliminate the need for preprocessing. Unfortunately, most current studies of audio auto-tagging cannot effectively reflect the semantic relationships between tags—for instance, the connection between "classical music" and "cello". In this paper, we propose a novel method that can enhance audio auto-tagging performance via joint embedding. Our model has been carefully designed and architected to recognize the semantic information within the tag domains. In our experiments using the MagnaTagATune (MTAT) dataset, which has high inter-tag correlations, and the Speech Commands dataset, which has no inter-tag correlations, we showed that our approach improves the performance of existing models when there are strong inter-tag correlations. Vince Clarke, a synth-pop icon known for his work with bands like Depeche Mode and Erasure, has released his debut solo album titled "Songs of Silence." The album is a dark and minimalist tribute to sci-fi film soundtracks. Clarke, who has always been fascinated with electronic sounds, began making electronic music in the '80s and has collaborated with various electronic luminaries. For his solo album, he experimented with drone-based tracks and drew inspiration from sci-fi films and ambient music. Clarke used modular equipment and Logic Pro to create the tracks, incorporating vocals and cello parts. He is also planning a live show for the album and continues to explore new techniques to keep his music interesting. [Extracted from the article]

BRIDGE design & construction ,CELLO ,FINITE element method ,MODAL analysis ,MODE shapes - Abstract
In instruments of the violin family, the bridge is the part in charge of transferring the vibrational energy of the strings into the body and therefore contributes greatly to the sound of the instrument. The bridge needs to be light enough to efficiently transmit the strings' movement yet rigid enough to support the static load of the strings. Historically, there have been several attempts at solving this problem with different designs, arriving in the early 1800s at the two current models: the French and the Belgian. Recently, in Cremona, Italy, the Amorim family of luthiers has developed a new cello bridge design. Inspired by their work, we study the influence of the shape of the legs of the cello bridge on its static and vibrational behavior through parametric modeling and simulations using the Finite Element Method. In particular, we perform displacement and modal analysis for different boundary conditions, providing in addition a detailed description of the mode shapes. We also compute and compare Frequency Response Functions for the different geometries. Our results show that shape can indeed be used to control the vibrational and static responses of the cello and consequently tune its sound. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper aims to study the work "Mutationen II für Cello und Tonband," written by Claudio Santoro, translating, and understanding the instructions in the cello part and in the tape. Regarding the recording of the media, the work deals with up-todate technological tools, such as studio recording and the use of audio programs, because tape recorders suggested by Claudio Santoro in the 1960s are no longer available. As the main results of the research, we can point out the recording of the piece and score editing in Portuguese, since the only edition previously available was a manuscript with most of the instructions in German. This research supports cellists interested in the study and performance of the piece, helping this way to spread knowledge about the work, which is one of the first pieces for cello and electroacoustics in the international repertoire. From the mid nineteenth century onwards, musical form has primarily been defined in terms of predetermined paradigms, which ostensibly provide a framework for hierarchically ordered materials. Despite its pervasive presence in theoretical literature, however, this Formenlehre tradition is not universal in musical thought. Since antiquity, theorists have resorted to images of dynamism, change, process, energy, intensity, and narration to denote a more elastic conception of (musical) form. However, most of them – such as, for instance, Kurth, Asaf’yev, or Maus – have not recognised that it is ultimately performers – not composers – who individually shape musical materials on the basis of the structural relations that they perceive within the music and then project in performance. This dissertation explores how such apparent incompatibility between theory and practice might be bridged. To that aim, the first part discusses how ‘dynamic’ notions of musical form might realise their full explanatory potential by accounting for the reality of performance. It also reviews previous investigations of performers’ strategies to project their structural understandings of musical works, with a special focus on their handling of timing, dynamics, articulation, intonation, and timbre. Using recorded interpretations of Brahms’s Cello Sonatas as sources for three case studies, the second part evaluates dynamic ideas of musical form from an analytical viewpoint. Through their personal approaches to these works, I show how select performers create a wide range of structural connections, which are never alike across their different recordings. Likewise, these performers neither resort to the same parameters nor ‘shape’ the select movements in the same manner or with the same intensity. I ultimately posit that musical structure is inferred, created, and experienced in a unique way on every occasion a given piece is performed – and also whenever it is composed, analysed, or listened to. This research does not dismiss music theory as having no explanatory potential in the investigation of abstract notions such as musical structure as we sense them in performance. Rather, it aims to contribute to the dialogue between theory and practice by showing how, and why, music theory should reconceptualise musical form as a set of possibilities affording multiple choices and interpretations, that is to say, as a ‘multiverse’ that emerges across time and in sound.

The article discusses a court's decision to deny a motion to quash a writ of execution on an antique cello, asserting that a trust beneficiary's interest in the property allows the government to levy it for estate tax liabilities. It mentions the case involved Omar Firestone, executor for Ghaida M. Firestone's estate, who created a trust for the cello, but the court found that Firestone still held an equitable interest in the instrument, making it subject to levy for outstanding tax debt.

- Abstract
This project explores the possibilities and challenges associated with writing for and performing with an unconventional, and for the composer new set of instruments. With the purpose of creating music out of intuitive, creative ideas rather than instrumentally based knowledge and habitual patterns I wrote and/or arranged six original songs for an ensemble consisting of lead vocals, accordion, trumpet/flugel horn, electric guitar, and a cellist and vocalist combined in one. We later performed the music at my bachelor’s recital which took place on the 3rd of April 2024 at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. The analysis of the musical result highlighted two compositional structures which in turn effected the co-playing in the group and divided the role-based responsibilities differently. The structure which was based around homophonic voices led to a common phrasing being the most important focus in comparison to the other which divided the ensemble into smaller groups with different functions where a joint time feel was of most importance., Musik:Sinking into a DreamBuss 61Time and Places UtegymmetBotanical GardenPick Up Kompositioner och arrangemang av: Ellen Mansten BruchfeldMedverkande musiker:Anna Østerby – dragspelHannes Arason – trumpet och flygelhornLinnea Hildén – cello och sångSvante Qvennerstedt – elgitarrEllen Mansten Bruchfeld – sång

- Abstract
José Luis Greco, a New York composer who has been based in Madrid since 1994, is one of the most important figures in contemporary music today. In this article, I present a theoretical framework to bridge the artistic and scientific dimensions in performance research. To achieve this, I explore areas of knowledge that may seem unrelated to musical interpretation, in order to establish the foundation of my study. The second part of this article briefly explains the methodology used in my doctoral thesis to examine the instrumental language in José Luis Greco's cello composition, as well as my proposed interpretation of the piece One Fell Swoop., El compositor neoyorquino José Luis Greco, afincado en Madrid desde el año 1994, es uno de los creadores más importantes en el panorama actual de la música contemporánea.

Three tree ring sequences were collected on the soundboard of the Stradivari harp. Due to the presence of the strings in the centre of the harp soundboard, the sampling of the tree ring widths was focused separately on the right side (RX), the central (CX) and the left side (LX). Tree ring measurements were carried out by using the Video Time Table (VTT), an instrument that combines a portable measuring device and a digital, high-resolution video camera. The VTT allowed non-invasive measurements of the tree rings to be made in situ and to immediately verify the quality of the sampling. The growth rings of the central portion were sampled using a high-resolution camera, which made it possible to bypass the barrier formed by the neck and strings. The consequent parallax and focus problems were overcome by taking many photographs from different angles. The measurements on the photographs were made with the CooRecorder program. The dendrochronological data were acquired with the PAST4 program and graphically processed and analysed with the PAST4 and 5 programs.

27. Discriminating music performers by timbre : on the relation between instrumental gesture, tone quality and perception in classical cello performance

781.2 ,Timbre ,Classical music ,Cello ,Music technology - Abstract
Classical music performers use instruments to transform the symbolic notationof the score into sound which is ultimately perceived by a listener. For acoustic instruments, the timbre of the resulting sound is assumed to be strongly linked to the physical and acoustical properties of the instrument itself. However, rather little is known about how much influence the player has over the timbre of the sound - is it possible to discriminate music performers by timbre? This thesis explores player-dependent aspects of timbre, serving as an individual means of musical expression. With a research scope narrowed to analysis of solo cello recordings, the differences in tone quality of six performers who played the same musical excerpts on the same cello are investigated from three different perspectives: perceptual, acoustical and gestural. In order to understand how the physical actions that a performer exerts on an instrument affect spectro-temporal features of the sound produced, which then can be perceived as the player's unique tone quality, a series of experiments are conducted, starting with the creation of dedicated multi-modal cello recordings extended by performance gesture information (bowing control parameters). In the first study, selected tone samples of six cellists are perceptually evaluated across various musical contexts via timbre dissimilarity and verbal attribute ratings. The spectro-temporal analysis follows in the second experiment, with the aim to identify acoustic features which best describe varying timbral characteristics of the players. Finally, in the third study, individual combinationsof bowing controls are examined in search for bowing patterns which might characterise each cellist regardless of the music being performed. The results show that the different players can be discriminated perceptually, by timbre, and that this perceptual discrimination can be projected back through the acoustical and gestural domains. By extending current understanding of human-instrument dependencies for qualitative tone production, this research may have further applications in computer-aided musical training and performer-informed instrumental sound synthesis.

The movement and the emotion are concepts that are closely related to the musical perspective. The musician needs the movement of his body in order to produce the sound with the instrument, besides the gesture can help understand the intention of the player. Some musical pieces have the aim to transmit a message, which has an influence on the emotions of the listener. The piece Suite of Movements (2017) for cello solo written by CastillaÁvila goes beyond the traditional Baroque suite and expands the sounds of cello. The piece reflects upon the relation between the movement and music, through the improvisation, the instrumental techniques' interchange and search for new ways of producing sound. Music history ,Britain ,Cello ,Melancholy ,Mourning ,Twentieth Century - Abstract
This dissertation explores how various early-twentieth century British composers used the cello as an instrument of melancholy and mourning in response to loss. Through an analysis of the biographies, correspondence, music, and cultural dimensions of Edward Elgar, Frederick Delius, Frank Bridge, Herbert Howells, Gerald Finzi, E.J. Moeran, Gustav Holst, Edmund Rubbra, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and William Walton, all who composed significant cello works, this dissertation illuminates the legacy of melancholy that the cello came to symbolize. The first chapter surveys melancholia, what the sixteenth-century author, philosopher, and Anglican clergyman Robert Burton called the “English malady.” Identifying its causes within British history, religion, and literature, the chapter argues that the immense tragedies of the twentieth century compelled these composers to aestheticize grief through new cello works. Chapter two analyzes how Elgar's valedictory and influential cello concerto portrays the composer’s histrionic lament over the passing of the world he knew. Chapter three meditates on Delius's Double Concerto, Cello Concerto, Cello Sonata, Serenade, and Caprice and Elegie, revealing the paradoxical melancholy of his fervid musical pantheism. In a study of Bridge's Cello Sonata and Oration, Concerto Elegiaco, the fourth chapter argues that Bridge negotiated the national and continental musical trends in order to meet the emotional exigencies of his artistic development during and after the Great War. The fifth chapter provides a hiatus from melancholic musings by presenting five British cellists, all women, who contributed to the success of several of the works discussed in the dissertation. Chapter six, a comparison of Herbert Howells and Gerald Finzi in tandem with their respective cello concertos, posits that the loss of childhood innocence—literally in the death of Howells's son Michael and figuratively in Finzi's experience of early losses—informed their cello compositions profoundly. Finally, by casting a wider vision on British musical melancholy and the cello, the seventh chapter considers the "British malady's" continued impact on lesser known cello works by E.J. Yunchan Lim's performance of Chopin Études is highly praised for its technical skill and musicality. Lim's playing showcases clean and fast arpeggios, clear chord changes, and delicate tonal weight. The left-hand runs are just as impressive as the right-hand runs, and Lim's interpretation effectively conveys the harmonic and dramatic elements of the music. While there are some minor flaws due to youth, overall, Lim's performance is considered first-class. [Extracted from the article]

Pijn, a Manchester-based collective, combines elements of prog, post-rock, and symphonic music to create sweeping and evocative compositions. Their latest album, "From Low Beams Of Hope," is more progressive and free-flowing compared to their previous release, "Loss." The band was founded by guitarist Joe Clayton and former drummer Nick Watmough, who drew inspiration from bands like Russian Circles and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Clayton's personal experiences, including the loss of a loved one, have influenced the band's music, and he hopes that others who have gone through similar hardships can find catharsis in their music. Few musicians of the twentieth century are as recognisable as Jacqueline du Pré. Her dazzling and distinctive talent, said to have enraptured audiences the world over, was overcome by a tragic diagnosis of MS. This sense of tragedy was all the more heightened by Du Pré’s famed physicality on the stage, leading critics to use all manner of analogies in describing her playing as a physical (and even sexual) experience. Her status as a musical celebrity, further intensified as she became one half of a classical music power couple, has led to numerous dramatic retellings and reimaginings of her biography, played out in film and TV, and now on stage. The most recent example of this fascination with Du Pré is the ballet The Cellist, Cathy Marston’s new work for the Royal Ballet, premiered in February 2020 to much critical acclaim. Its score, composed by Philip Feeney, features a cello soloist and interweaved repertoire extracts that have become so associated with Du Pré. Along with the characters of Barenboim, Du Pré, and her family, her 1673 Stradivarius cello is given a starring role in the form of Marcelino Sambé, a new take that makes this a distinctive contribution to media representations of Du Pré. This article examines the interactions across this complex web of musical representations of musical personae engrained in the cultural consciousness. It considers acts of musical performance, the musical instrument as living companion, and the representation of classical musical culture of the 1960s and 1970s, drawing attention to key features of Du Pré’s narrative re-presented in a new artistic form.

The position and orientation of the sound post in violin family instruments has long been known to color the sound of the instrument. Small changes in the position of the sound post relative to the top and back plates of the instrument can result in audible changes in the instrument's tone. Quantifying the effect of the sound post's placement on tone requires precise localization of the sound post. Luthiers have developed simple techniques to localize the post relative to the top of the instrument. Precisely localizing the post relative to the back, however, typically requires disassembly of the endpin. In this study, a noninvasive technique was developed using a force hammer to localize the sound post relative to the back of the instrument. This method was verified on a wooden box model and subsequently applied to two cellos, one with a laminate construction and the other carved. The sound post was localized well in the wooden box and laminate cello, but not as well in the carved cello. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Michael Praetorius’s De organographia and Theatrum instrumentorum provide valuable clues that contribute to a new understanding of the violin family c. 1619, many surviving examples of which are reduced in size from their sixteenth- and seventeenth-century dimensions. The record of surviving instruments – especially those of the Amati family – alongside metrologic, documentary and iconographic evidence shows that Michael Praetorius describes a large instrument conforming remarkably well to the original dimensions of the basso da braccio (violoncello), as well as furnishing an excellent scale representation of the violin family as it was at the time of these works’ publication and an accurate tuning scheme.

In the twentieth century, time became a key-concept for music – maybe the art more dependent on time. Even so, a myriad of definitions did turn this idea not only into a rich element for musical discourse but also into a conceptual battlefield in discourses about music. Unfortunately, there was an issue for this struggle between theoretical ideas and musical composition that always insisted in striking the debate: the performance. Thus, this is the aim of this short reflection: to bring performers as protagonists in the debate, listening to their experience in time and of time in performance. For this, the Augustinian link between Time and Memory is taken as a bottom line for the discussion. In understanding music as a kind of discourse, another important conceptual device will be claimed for this reflection, that is Rhetoric. The first part of this reflection recollects concepts from the Aristotelian and Augustinian approaches on time and discourse, and concludes with a review of the main definitions of time by composers in the twentieth century. The second part reviews three theoretical approaches of musical form as process. A third section comprises the embodiment of those discussions into practice in the Cello Sonata, written by Bernd Alois Zimmermann.

The thesis is a critical reading of pedagogical and biographical texts by and on violinists, written in the early twentieth century. It contributes to historical and discursive studies by providing a limited engagement with a largely neglected group of historical sources relating to musical performance, and further advances the historical research on subjectivity, the body, pathology, and erotics, in relation to discourses of music. The thesis also contributes to studies of performance practice, and empirical and psychological studies of musical performance, in that it engages with discursive notions of theoretical and performance categories, such as tempo, melody, vibrato and portamento. By taking a hermeneutic approach to detailed discussions of performative practices, primarily found in pedagogical texts, the project aims to provide a more nuanced assessment of many of the topics that have played a central role in the ongoing research on early twentieth-century performance (which principally consists of recordings analysis). The project does this by demonstrating the extent to which these practices are culturally and historically mediated. Following an introduction, chapter 2 demonstrates that notions of consciousness inform writers’ notions of musical virtuosity, and shows that Nietzschean and Wagnerian notions of self underpin the idea of the violinist as a superior producer of art. Chapter 3 argues that these ideas combine with metaphysical notions of melody to make the concept of ‘tone’/Ton the cornerstone of string playing during this period, which in turn has important implications for how writers conceive of tempo, rhythm, vibrato, portamento and dynamics. Chapter 4 demonstrates that writers perceive their ideal of tone to be threatened by moral and physiological disease, manifested in individual/social bodies, which leads to a very different articulation of these same practices. Chapter 5 explores traces of notions of intersubjectivity, arising from metaphors of erotic desire, which challenge the hegemonic ideal of universal mind. The conclusion frames the discourse as a problematic attempt to posit an authoritarian model of string playing. It also includes a preliminary study of early twentieth-century discourses of cello playing, and engages with the research to date on national styles of violin playing in the same period.

This paper examines the evolution of the signature traits of Borys Liatoshynsky’s instrumental chamber music during the 1910s and 1920s in the context of the overall evolution of the composer’s expressive means. Also presented is the complex analysis of Liatoshynsky’s creative personality in his early (the 1910s) and modernist (1920s) periods in order to outline the impact of the cultural and historical environment the artist lived in during the late 1910s, as well as the influence of the troubled sociocultural situation of the time on his imagery. It was found that in the 1910s Liatoshynsky turned to modifying expressive means of late Romanticism; however, during the 1920s the palette of his instrumental chamber music shifted to symphonic experiments. For Liatoshynsky, instrumental chamber music becomes a testing ground for his creed as a symphonic composer with the respective imagery and existential drama behind his design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this dissertation, I explore the unique musical interests of Victor Herbert’s Cello Concerto No. 2, Op. 30 (1894) with the intent to promote the piece from its ‘fringe’ repertory status. Theresearch presented synthesizes historical information, traditional analysis, and material surveyswith a physical exploration from the solo cellist’s point of view to show effective methods formaximizing drama without sacrificing clarity, promoting a singing, vocal quality of the solocello, and creating a unique duality of tone combining romantic gravitas with thelightheartedness of operetta. In addition, I track the concerto’s reception and repertory statusfrom its premiere in 1894 to 2021 using a survey of existing reviews, articles, public discourse, and recordings. This research aims to encourage more concert programming of the Op. 30, and inthe process, makes the argument that canonization and the related false dichotomy between‘light’ and ‘serious’ music styles have been detrimental forces in the consolidation of the celloconcerto repertoire.

This research is a qualitative study aiming to reveal teaching methods for Turkish Music in cello education at music teacher training departments of universities in Turkey and to assess the process from the perspectives of academicians working at such departments. This is a descriptive study in which literature review and interview methods were used. The interview form, developed as a data collection tool in the study, was given its final form in line with expert opinions. As a result of content analysis performed in this study, it was revealed that Turkish Music education is taught only if the teacher has an interest in the field or if they deem it necessary; that the course content only includes adaptations or arrangements transcribed into tempered system, and that usul structures were the most challenging subject for students in Turkish Music performance. The reasons for not including Turkish Music in curricula of cello education at teacher training institutions were seen to include lack of resources, qualification of the trainers, not familiar with Turkish Music, methodology, the opinion that tonal and microtonal music education cannot be both included in the same curriculum, students’ lack of theoretical background to learn Turkish Music.

- Abstract
Increasing demand for resonance spruce has led to gradual depletion of resources in traditional areas. Consequently, to meet the need for raw material to manufacture musical instruments, sorting has become the key operation of exploitation. This study was completed on the largest Romanian resonance wood resource, to maximize outputs of flitches for violin, cello, and double bass instruments by optimizing traditional requirements regarding quality of raw material with its current level. Ten resonance spruces were felled and gradually turned into semi-manufactured musical instruments. The material was analysed for defects in all stages of conversion. The frequency of zero defective samples was 60%. Evolution of defects along the trees indicated the tree section from 1 m to 12 m above the ground for musical instruments manufacturing. Output in terms of flitches ranged from one tree to another: between 19 and 32% if calculated from logs volume, and between 13 and 30% if calculated from volume of the standing trees. The results advocated for relaxing traditional requirements on resonance logs, at least regarding buttress and knottiness. Thus, recommendations are made, from the perspective of increasing efficiency, on the admissibility of defects and size diversification of musical instruments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
