We describe the possibilities of the “Cluster Cartography” tool which was created for detailed study of the 2D distribution of galaxies in the clusters. The main tasks of the “Cluster Cartography” tool were the detailed study of the morphologyof galaxy clusters using the statistically significant numerical criteria as well as to detect their regular peculiarities. The tool allows to create the 2D map with positions of galaxies in the cluster field and show for each cluster member its shape and orientation as a best-fit ellipse using input catalogue data. The size of symbols for galaxies correspond to input data.It may reflect the galaxy image in arcseconds from catalogue in the map 4000×4000arcsec. Another way connects the size of the symbol with the magnitude of the galaxy. Tool is able to build the map in four modes: the symbols are dots; the symbols are circles with diameters reflected the magnitudes of galaxies; the symbols are ellipses with size reflected the magnitudesand both ellipticities and orientation from the input catalogue; the symbols illustrate the shape of galaxies in projection to the celestial sphere. The “Cluster Cartography” algorithms allow to detect the standard cases in galaxy distribution, suchas the degree of concentration to the cluster center and/or to some line on a statistically significant level using the numerical criteria. Also “Cluster Cartography” allows to detect other features, such as crosses, semi-crosses, complex crosses and short compact chains, as well as to export the list of galaxies forming the peculiarities for the futurestudy. The final version of the “Cluster Cartography” allows to realize the modern scheme for detailed morphological classification of galaxy clusters. The “Cluster Cartography” is powerful and perspective tool for study of features of galaxy clusters.

Recently, scattering amplitudes in four-dimensional Minkowski spacetime have been interpreted as conformal correlation functions on the two-dimensional celestial sphere, the so-called celestial amplitudes. In this note we consider tree-level scattering amplitudes in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory and present a Grassmannian formulation of their celestial counterparts. This result paves the way towards a geometric picture for celestial superamplitudes, in the spirit of positive geometries., 11 pages

The simulated star map generated by the dynamic star simulator cannot meet the current demand for calibration of the star map recognition rate of the star sensor due to the huge amount of guide star catalog data and the slow retrieval process. This paper proposes the guide star equipartition method, which makes the constant number of each sub-region of the guide star catalog basically the same. This method first divides the declination at equal intervals through the field of view of the dynamic star simulator, and then determines the interval of the right ascension by the average number of stars with magnitude Mv that can be photographed in the field of view of the star sensor. The SAO (Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory) catalog containing 5103 stars in the whole celestial sphere is divided into 452 sub-areas by the average number of guide stars. After the division, the guide star retrieval time is about 8ms, and the refresh rate of the simulated star map is increased by more than three times. The real-time requirements of the dynamic star simulator have been improved. Based on this, a star map simulation software is designed, which can realize the division of star catalogs with different fields of view and different magnitude thresholds.

Introduction. Тhe phraseological fund of any language reflects specific features of the cultural and national view of the world, and each phraseological unit contributes to the formation of a common linguistic picture of the world. The influence of this source gives the language a vivid national character. The focus of this article is on all types of phraseological units (from idioms to proverbs and sayings) containing the lexemes belonging to the thematic group «Heavenly sphere (including the air sphere)» as a key word and having parallels in the folklore tradition of the Udmurt people. Materials and Methods. The research is based on the analysis of the materials from the lexicographic work “Expressive means of the Udmurt language” (1996) as well as phraseological units from the book “Aid in recording Udmurt phraseology” (2003) by G. N. Lesnikova and proverbs from the anthology “Ingur: anthology of Udmurt folklore” (2004). The research is carried out through the complex of methods, such as the descriptive and continuous sampling methods as well as the technique of situational and contextual analysis, which allows to consider the situationally determined connections of paroemia and paroemiac expressions. The use of these methods makes it possible to reveal the correlation between the language as a system and the cognitive aspect of the language material under study. Results and Discussion. It was revealed that for the system of the Udmurt language as the basic units of the group under study, we can distinguish static in ‘sky’, where everything has its place and order, and dynamic töl ‘wind’, which characterizes a force, a very strong flow, having both creative and destructive power. A set of key phraseological units with the components shundi ‘sun’, tolez’ ‘moon’, gudiri ‘thunder’, pilem ‘cloud’, kiz’ili ‘star’ also allows to identify the national specifics and worldview of the Udmurt people. Conclusion. The broadest range of meanings is represented by the lexeme “tol” meaning ‘wind’. Among the considered phraseological units, the lexeme gudyri ‘thunder’ has the minimum distributive load, which, apparently, can be explained by the specifics of the natural phenomenon itself. In some cases, the semantic load of the studied units has direct parallels with the images and motives presented in certain genres of Udmurt folklore. The peculiarity of the representation of these phraseological units is based on the figurative meanings of words.

We propose an efficient, specific method for estimating camera parameters from a single starry night image. Such an image consists of a collection of disks representing stars, so traditional estimation methods for common pictures do not work. Our method uses a database, a star catalog, that stores the positions of stars on the celestial sphere. Our method computes magnitudes (i.e., brightnesses) of stars in the input image and uses them to find the corresponding stars in the star catalog. Camera parameters can then be estimated by a simple geometric calculation. Our method is over ten times faster and more accurate than a previous method.

The field of UHECRs (Ultra-High energy cosmic Rays) and the understanding of particle acceleration in the cosmos, as a key ingredient to the behaviour of the most powerful sources in the universe, is of outmost importance for astroparticle physics as well as for fundamental physics and will improve our general understanding of the universe. The current main goals are to identify sources of UHECRs and their composition. For this, increased statistics is required. A space-based detector for UHECR research has the advantage of a very large exposure and a uniform coverage of the celestial sphere. The aim of the JEM-EUSO program [1] is to bring the study of UHECRs to space. The principle of observation is based on the detection of UV light emitted by isotropic fluorescence of atmospheric nitrogen excited by the Extensive Air Showers (EAS) in the Earth's atmosphere and forward-beamed Cherenkov radiation reflected from the Earth's surface or dense cloud tops. In addition to the prime objective of UHECR studies, JEM-EUSO will do several secondary studies due to the instruments' unique capacity of detecting very weak UV-signals with extreme time-resolution around 1 μs: meteors, Transient Luminous Events (TLE), bioluminescence, maps of human generated UV-light, searches for Strange Quark Matter (SQM) and high-energy neutrinos, and more. The JEM-EUSO program includes several missions from ground (EUSO-TA [2]), from stratospheric balloons (EUSO-Balloon [3], EUSO-SPB1 [4], EUSO-SPB2 [5]), and from space (TUS [6], Mini-EUSO [7]) employing fluorescence detectors to demonstrate the UHECR observation from space and prepare the large size missions K-EUSO [8] and POEMMA [9]. To date weak gravitational lensing surveys have typically been restricted to small fields of view, such that the flat-sky approximation has been sufficiently satisfied. However, with Stage IV surveys (e.g. LSST and Euclid) imminent, extending mass-mapping techniques to the sphere is a fundamental necessity. As such, we extend the sparse hierarchical Bayesian mass-mapping formalism presented in previous work to the spherical sky. For the first time, this allows us to construct maximum a posteriori spherical weak lensing dark-matter mass-maps, with principled Bayesian uncertainties, without imposing or assuming Gaussianty. We solve the spherical mass-mapping inverse problem in the analysis setting adopting a sparsity promoting Laplace-type wavelet prior, though this theoretical framework supports all log-concave posteriors. Our spherical mass-mapping formalism facilitates principled statistical interpretation of reconstructions. We apply our framework to convergence reconstruction on high resolution N-body simulations with pseudo-Euclid masking, polluted with a variety of realistic noise levels, and show a significant increase in reconstruction fidelity compared to standard approaches. Furthermore, we perform the largest joint reconstruction to date of the majority of publicly available shear observational data sets (combining DESY1, KiDS450, and CFHTLens) and find that our formalism recovers a convergence map with significantly enhanced small-scale detail. Within our Bayesian framework we validate, in a statistically rigorous manner, the community’s intuition regarding the need to smooth spherical Kaiser-Squires estimates to provide physically meaningful convergence maps. Such approaches cannot reveal the small-scale physical structures that we recover within our framework.

Conformally soft gluons are conserved currents of the Celestial Conformal Field Theory (CCFT) and generate a Kac-Moody algebra. We study celestial amplitudes of Yang-Mills theory, which are Mellin transforms of gluon amplitudes and take the double soft limit of a pair of gluons. In this manner we construct the Sugawara energy-momentum tensor of the CCFT. We verify that conformally soft gauge bosons are Virasoro primaries of the CCFT under the Sugawara energy-momentum tensor. The Sugawara tensor though does not generate the correct conformal transformations for hard states. In Einstein-Yang- Mills (EYM) theory, we consider an alternative construction of the energy-momentum tensor, similar to the double copy construction which relates gauge theory amplitudes with gravity ones. This energy momentum tensor has the correct properties to generate conformal transformations for both soft and hard states. We extend this construction to supertranslations., Comment: 39 pages

The functional structure of celestial amplitudes as constrained by Poincar\'e symmetry is investigated in $2,3,$ and $4$-point cases for massless external particles of various spin, as well as massive external scalars. Functional constraints and recurrence relations are found (akin to the findings in arXiv:1901.01622) that must be obeyed by the respective permissible correlator structures and function coefficients. In specific three-point cases involving massive scalars the resulting recurrence relations can be solved, e.g. reproducing purely from symmetry a three-point function coefficient known in the literature. Tijekom dana su koristili Sunce, a tijekom noći zvijezde i planete, kako su se tijekom određenog vremenskog perioda pojavljivali razni navigacijski uređaji, a pomorci su već znali identificirati odnosno prepoznati zvijezde na nebeskoj sferi, navigacija je postala znatno lakša. Kasnije su počeli određivati udaljenost zvijezda i njihov položaj, te su na taj način uspjeli doći do vlastite pozicije. Za pronalaženje zvijezda su se koristile zamišljene linije i pravci, odnosno alignamenti., From the very beginnings of navigation, before various navigational instruments were invented, people found their way around in various ways in order to orient themselves in space, so they started using celestial bodies. During the day they used the Sun, and during the night the stars and planets, as various navigation devices appeared over a certain period of time, and sailors already knew how to identify or recognize the stars on the celestial sphere, navigation became much easier. Later, they began to determine the distance of the stars and their position, and in this way they managed to reach their own position. Imaginary lines and directions, or alignments, were used to find the stars.

We generalize Zwanziger's pairwise little group to include a boost subgroup. We do so by working in the celestial sphere representation of scattering amplitudes. We propose that due to late time soft photon and graviton exchanges, matter particles in the asymptotic states in massless QED and gravity transform under the Poincare group with an additional pair of pairwise celestial representations for each pair of matter particles. We demonstrate that the massless abelian and gravitational exponentiation theorems are consistent with the proposed pairwise Poincare transformation properties. For massless QED we demonstrate that our results are consistent with the effects of the Faddeev-Kulish dressing and the abelian exponentiation theorem for celestial amplitudes found in [2012.04208]. Although a catalogue of synthetic RGB magnitudes, providing photometric data for a sample of 1346 bright stars, has been recently published, its usefulness is still limited due to the small number of reference stars available, considering that they are distributed throughout the whole celestial sphere, and the fact that they are restricted to Johnson V < 6.6 mag. This work presents synthetic RGB magnitudes for ∼15 million stars brighter than Gaia G = 18 mag, making use of a calibration between the RGB magnitudes of the reference bright star sample and the corresponding high-quality photometric G, GBP, and GRP magnitudes provided by the Gaia EDR3. The calibration has been restricted to stars exhibiting -0.5 < GBP - GRP < 2.0 mag, and aims to predict RGB magnitudes within an error interval of ±0.1 mag. Since the reference bright star sample is dominated by nearby stars with slightly undersolar metallicity, systematic variations in the predictions are expected, as modelled with the help of stellar atmosphere models. These deviations are constrained to the ±0.1-mag interval when applying the calibration only to stars scarcely affected by interstellar extinction and with metallicity compatible with the median value for the bright star sample. Infrared divergences in perturbative gravitational scattering amplitudes have been recently argued to be governed by the two-point function of the supertranslation Goldstone mode on the celestial sphere. We show that the form of this celestial two-point function simply derives from an effective action that also controls infrared divergences in the symplectic structure of General Relativity with asymptotically flat boundary conditions. This effective action finds its natural place in a path integral formulation of a celestial conformal field theory, as we illustrate by re-deriving the infrared soft factors in terms of celestial correlators. The deflection of cosmic rays (CRs) in the interstellar magnetic field results in an almost isotropic flux as observed on Earth. However, an anisotropy has been observed at the level of ∼ 10^{-4} − 10^{-3}. The GRAPES-3 experiment located at Ooty, India consists of an array of 400 plastic scintillator detectors. It measures the particle densities and their relative arrival times in extensive air showers produced by the CRs. This information collected is then reconstructed to obtain the energy and direction of the primary CRs. The near-equatorial location of GRAPES-3 provides an opportunity to study this anisotropy in both hemispheres of the celestial sphere in the TeV-PeV energy range. However, detector and atmospheric effects that induce a few per cent change in the primary CR flux are challenges to be addressed. This work describes the use of the time scrambling method to address some these systematics and observe anisotropy.

Although the use of RGB photometry has exploded in the last decades due to the advent of high-quality and inexpensive digital cameras equipped with Bayer-like colour filter systems, there is surprisingly no catalogue of bright stars that can be used for calibration purposes. Since due to their excessive brightness, accurate enough spectrophotometric measurements of bright stars typically cannot be performed with modern large telescopes, we have employed historical 13-colour medium-narrow-band photometric data, gathered with quite reliable photomultipliers, to fit the spectrum of 1346 bright stars using stellar atmosphere models. This not only constitutes a useful compilation of bright spectrophotometric standards well spread in the celestial sphere, the UCM library of spectrophotometric spectra, but allows the generation of a catalogue of reference RGB magnitudes, with typical random uncertainties ∼0.01 mag. For that purpose, we have defined a new set of spectral sensitivity curves, computed as the median of 28 sets of empirical sensitivity curves from the literature, that can be used to establish a standard RGB photometric system. Conversions between RGB magnitudes computed with any of these sets of empirical RGB curves and those determined with the new standard photometric system are provided. Even though particular RGB measurements from single cameras are not expected to provide extremely accurate photometric data, the repeatability and multiplicity of observations will allow access to a large amount of exploitable data in many astronomical fields, such as the detailed monitoring of light pollution and its impact on the night sky brightness, or the study of meteors, Solar system bodies, variable stars, and transient objects. Recently, there have been several studies on the evolution of binary systems using historical data treated as facts in the chain of arguments. In this paper we discuss six case studies of modern dwarf novae with suggested historical counterpart from the historical point of view as well as the derived consequences for the physics of close binary systems (the dwarf novae Z Cam and AT Cnc, the nebula in M22, and the possible Nova 101, Nova 483, and Nova 1437). We consider the historical Far Eastern reports and after a careful re-reading of the text we map the given information on the sky. In some cases, the positions given in modern lists of classical nova-guest star-pairs turn out to be wrong, or they have to be considered highly approximate: The historical position, in most cases, should be transformed into areas at the celestial sphere and not into point coordinates. Based on the correct information we consider the consequences concerning the evolution of close binary systems. However, the result is that none of the cases of cataclysmic variables suggested to have a historical counterpart can be (fully) supported. As the identification of the historical record of observation with the CVs known today turns out to be always uncertain, a potential historical observation alone may not be relied on to draw conclusions on the evolution of binaries. Aristotle’s De caelo I–II establishes the perfect circular motion as the kind of motion that necessarily belongs to the celestial sphere, which itself consists of a correlatively perfect and internally animate ‘first of bodily substances’. The latter, despite its entirely material nature, is repeatedly described as something divine and topically separate from the sublunary realm of generation and destruction, and it can be legitimately understood as the only body that moves itself in a full, non-qualified sense. The issue is therefore to find out how Aristotle reconciles (or fails to reconcile) this properly cosmological innovation with the passages where he introduces a non-physical agent or an unmoved mover that is apparently responsible for the same celestial motion or, at the very least, for some of its properties. Concerning the De caelo itself, commentators have focused on three passages which seem to imply the presence of such a mover in this treatise (I,9,279a11–b3; II,6,288a27–b7; II,12,292a14– b25). The first part of this article offers a close reexamination of these passages and concludes that none of them points unequivocally towards the unmoved mover as a source of celestial motion. This conclusion, however, makes it even more pressing to ask, as we do in the article’s second part, about the relation between the De caelo and, especially, Metaphysics XII, where such a mover plays an important role in explaining the arrangement of the universe including its celestial sphere. Instead of relying on the developmental explanation, the article concludes that Aristotle does not strive to elaborate an overarching scheme that would reconcile a self-moving principle of celestial motion (a principle argued for in Aristotle’s natural science) with an unmoved mover whose activity consists in thinking and whose nature is properly metaphysical.

We have studied the kinematic properties of the candidates for hot subdwarfs (HSDs) selected by Geier et al. from the Gaia DR2 catalogue. We have used a total of 12 515 stars with relative trigonometric parallax errors less than 30\%. The HSDs are shown to have different kinematics, depending on their positions on the celestial sphere. The astrolabe, stereographic projection of the celestial sphere on the plane of the equator, simulates the apparent rotation of this sphere around the Earth, with respect to a certain latitude, and allows to establish the relative position of the stars at a given moment. To understand its meaning and use it is necessary to recall out the main elements of astronomical geography. From the III century BC onwards, various types of astrolabe were built. Among the tools used in the course of the centuries for orientation and measurement, it is the one that perfectly performed both functions, providing measurements related to different fields of investigation: astronomy, chronometry, orientation, measurements (length-height-depth), astrology.

The Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) project is intended for surveying the entire sky in the X‑ray band using two telescopes mounted onboard the spacecraft of the same name (SRG). In addition, some specially chosen areas of the sky and some radiation sources are planned to be investigated after the completion of the survey. The spacecraft was planned to be launched in 2018 into the vicinity of solar-terrestrial collinear libration point L2, using the Proton-M launch vehicle with a DM-03 block upper stage. The technology for completely surveying the celestial sphere consists in scanning by rotating the parallel axes of telescopes around the spacecraft axis, which roughly followed the direction to the Sun. The measurement data, stored onboard the spacecraft, would then be transmitted to the ground receiving stations using the mean gain antenna, the axis of which coincided with the spacecraft’s axis of rotation. This imposed some constraints on the mission design. These constraints included the permissible amplitude of the trajectory of spacecraft motion relative to the libration point in the direction orthogonal to the Sun–Earth line. In addition, the consumption of the onboard propellant was allowed only for orbit correction needed for keeping the spacecraft near the libration point. In this connection, a method was developed using the upper stage in order to decrease the mentioned amplitude down to acceptable values, in the conditions of the requirements imposed on the unit. The paper presents an assessment of its effectiveness.

In ‘KRNL3D’ we derive a kernel function K(y 1, y 2, φ) whose backprojections from all directions (θ, φ) in the spherical band ∣ φ ∣ < φ ¯ max on the celestial sphere, when integrated with respect to solid angle, yield ρ, the 3D Gaussian point response function (PRF) of radius 1. This K, when convolved against line integral data from an unknown density function f, yields an integral formula for the ‘mollification’ ff = ρ ∗ f, which is a slightly blurred version of f, and which stabilizes the mild ill-posedness. Applied to positron emission tomography that backprojection reconstruction occurs stochastically and one emission event at a time, after needed data corrections. We describe Octave (≈Matlab) codes to tabulate K and to test its use with a large aperture φ ¯ max = π / 3 or π/6. ‘KRNL3D- TOF’ truncates backprojection to a cylindrical patch about the TOF approximate location of each event. These ‘backplacements’ decrease the computational cost and limit noise and streaking in one region from contaminating the reconstruction in more distant regions. They also retain the ability to count emission events in an isolated blob despite very low event counts, a valuable feature for dynamic studies of metabolic processes. ‘Multigrid’ allows further reduction in the radius and lengths of the cylinders, thereby enabling even more precise use of the TOF information. This precision should be especially important as researchers decrease the TOF uncertainty in newer generation scanners. Finally, we discuss ‘further work’ that needs to be done. We recast the soft $S$-matrices on the celestial sphere as correlation functions of certain $2$-dimensional models of topological defects. In pointing out the double copy structure between the soft photon and soft graviton cases, we arrive at a putative classical double copy between the corresponding topological models and a rederivation of gauge invariance and the equivalence principle as Ward identities of the $2$-dimensional theories., Comment: v3: 12 pages, references added

The analytic structures of scattering amplitudes in gauge theory and gravity are examined on the celestial sphere. The celestial amplitudes in the two theories - computed by employing a regulated Mellin transform - can be compared at low multiplicity. It is established by direct computation that up to five external particles, the double copy relations of Kawai, Lewellen and Tye continue to hold identically, modulo certain multiplicative factors which are explicitly determined. Since July 2014, the ESA Gaia mission has been surveying the entire sky down to magnitude 20.7 in the visible. In addition to the millions of stars, thousands of Solar System Objects (SSOs) are observed daily. By comparing their positions to those of known objects, a daily processing pipeline filters known objects from potential discoveries. However, owing to Gaia's specific scanning law designed for stars, potential newly discovered moving objects are characterized by very few observations, acquired over a limited time. This aspect was recognized early in the design of the Gaia data processing. A daily processing pipeline dedicated to these candidate discoveries was set up to release calls for observations to a network of ground-based telescopes. Their aim is to acquire follow-up astrometry and to characterize these objects. From the astrometry measured by Gaia, preliminary orbital solutions are determined, allowing to predict the position of these potentially new discovered objects in the sky accounting for the large parallax between Gaia and the Earth (separated by 0.01 au). A specific task within the Gaia Consortium has been responsible for the distribution of requests for follow-up observations of potential Gaia SSO discoveries. Since late 2016, these calls for observations (called alerts) are published daily via a Web interface, freely available to anyone world-wide. Between November 2016 and July 2020, over 1700 alerts have been published, leading to the successful recovery of more than 200 objects. Among those, six have provisional designation assigned with the Gaia observations, the others being previously known objects with poorly characterized orbits, precluding identification at the time of Gaia observations. There is a clear trend for objects with a high inclination to be unidentified, revealing a clear bias in the current census of SSOs against high inclination populations., Submitted to Astronomy & Astrophysics

eROSITA (extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array) is the primary instrument on the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) mission, which was successfully launched on July 13, 2019, from the Baikonour cosmodrome. After the commissioning of the instrument and a subsequent calibration and performance verification phase, eROSITA started a survey of the entire sky on December 13, 2019. By the end of 2023, eight complete scans of the celestial sphere will have been performed, each lasting six months. At the end of this program, the eROSITA all-sky survey in the soft X-ray band (0.2--2.3\,keV) will be about 25 times more sensitive than the ROSAT All-Sky Survey, while in the hard band (2.3--8\,keV) it will provide the first ever true imaging survey of the sky. The eROSITA design driving science is the detection of large samples of galaxy clusters up to redshifts $z>1$ in order to study the large-scale structure of the universe and test cosmological models including Dark Energy. In addition, eROSITA is expected to yield a sample of a few million AGNs, including obscured objects, revolutionizing our view of the evolution of supermassive black holes. The survey will also provide new insights into a wide range of astrophysical phenomena, including X-ray binaries, active stars, and diffuse emission within the Galaxy. Results from early observations, some of which are presented here, confirm that the performance of the instrument is able to fulfil its scientific promise. Modern climate science, Earth system science, physical geography, oceanography, meteorology, and related disciplines have increasingly turned into highly quantitative, computational fields, dealing with processing, analysis and visualization of large numerical data sets. Students of these and many other disciplines thus need to acquire robust scientific computing and data analysis skills, which have universal applicability. In addition, the increasing economic importance and environmental significance of solar power and sustainable practices such as passive building design have recently increased the importance of understanding of the apparent motions of the Sun on the celestial sphere, for a wider array of students and professionals. In this paper, I introduce and describe AstroGeoVis v1.0: open-source software that calculates solar coordinates and related parameters and produces astronomical visualizations relevant to the Earth and climate sciences. The software is written in MATLAB©; while its primary intended purpose is pedagogical, research use is envisioned as well. Both the visualizations and the code are intended to be used in the classroom in a variety of courses, at a variety of levels (targeting high school students to undergraduates), including Earth and climate sciences, geography, physics, astronomy, mathematics, statistics and computer science. I provide examples of classroom use and assignment ideas, as well as examples of ways I have used these resources in my college-level teaching. Dedication Tihomir S. We present a novel method to search for structures of coherently aligned patterns in ultra-high energy cosmic-ray arrival directions simultaneously across the entire sky. This method can be used to obtain information on the Galactic magnetic field, in particular the integrated component perpendicular to the line of sight, from cosmic-ray data only. Using a likelihood-ratio approach, neighboring cosmic rays are related by rotatable, elliptically shaped density distributions and the significance of their alignment with respect to circular distributions is evaluated. In this way, a vector field tangential to the celestial sphere is fitted which approximates the local deflections in cosmic magnetic fields if significant deflection structures are detected. The sensitivity of the method is evaluated on the basis of astrophysical simulations of the ultra-high energy cosmic-ray sky, where a discriminative power between isotropic and signal-induced scenarios is found., 14 pages, 15 figures

The bulk-to-boundary dictionary for 4D celestial holography is given a new entry defining 2D boundary states living on oriented circles on the celestial sphere. The states are constructed using the 2D CFT state-operator correspondence from operator insertions corresponding to either incoming or outgoing particles which cross the celestial sphere inside the circle. The BPZ construction is applied to give an inner product on such states whose associated bulk adjoints are shown to involve a shadow transform. Scattering amplitudes are then given by BPZ inner products between states living on the same circle but with opposite orientations. 2D boundary states are found to encode the same information as their 4D bulk counterparts, but organized in a radically different manner., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures

We consider the infrared factorisation of non-abelian multi-particle scattering amplitudes, and we study the form of the universal colour operator responsible for infrared divergences, when expressed in terms of coordinates on the `celestial sphere' intersecting the future light-cone at asymptotic distances. We find that colour-dipole contributions to the infrared operator, to all orders in perturbation theory, have a remarkably simple expression in these coordinates, with scale and coupling dependence factorised from kinematics and colour. Generalising earlier suggestions in the abelian theory, we then show that the infrared operator can be computed as a correlator of vertex operators in a conformal field theory of Lie-algebra-valued free bosons on the celestial sphere. We verify by means of the OPE that the theory correctly predicts the all-order structure of collinear limits, and the tree-level factorisation of soft real radiation., Comment: 23 pages, no figures

We present a search for radio afterglows from long gamma-ray bursts using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). Our search used the Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey, covering the entire celestial sphere south of declination $+41^\circ$, and three epochs of the Variables and Slow Transients Pilot Survey (Phase 1), covering $\sim 5,000$ square degrees per epoch. The observations we used from these surveys spanned a nine-month period from 2019 April 21 to 2020 January 11. We crossmatched radio sources found in these surveys with 779 well-localised (to $\leq 15''$) long gamma-ray bursts occurring after 2004 and determined whether the associations were more likely afterglow- or host-related through the analysis of optical images. In our search, we detected one radio afterglow candidate associated with GRB 171205A, a local low-luminosity gamma-ray burst with a supernova counterpart SN 2017iuk, in an ASKAP observation 511 days post-burst. We confirmed this detection with further observations of the radio afterglow using the Australia Telescope Compact Array at 859 days and 884 days post-burst. Combining this data with archival data from early-time radio observations, we showed the evolution of the radio spectral energy distribution alone could reveal clear signatures of a wind-like circumburst medium for the burst. Finally, we derived semi-analytical estimates for the microphysical shock parameters of the burst: electron power-law index $p = 2.84$, normalised wind-density parameter $A_* = 3$, fractional energy in electrons $\epsilon_{e} = 0.3$, and fractional energy in magnetic fields $\epsilon_{B} = 0.0002$., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

We discuss modifications to the Hawking spectrum that arise when the asymptotic states are supertranslated or superrotated. For supertranslations we find nontrivial off-diagonal phases in the two-point correlator although the emission spectrum is eventually left unchanged, as previously pointed out in the literature. In contrast, superrotations give rise to modifications which manifest themselves in the emission spectrum and depend nontrivially on the associated conformal factor at future null infinity. We study Lorentz boosts and a class of superrotations whose conformal factors do not depend on the azimuthal angle on the celestial sphere and whose singularities at the north and south poles have been associated to the presence of a cosmic string. In spite of such singularities, superrotations still lead to finite spectral emission rates of particles and energy which display a distinctive power-law behavior at high frequencies for each angular momentum state. The integrated particle emission rate and emitted power, on the contrary, while finite for boosts, do exhibit ultraviolet divergences for superrotations, between logarithmic and quadratic. Such divergences can be ascribed to modes with support along the cosmic string. In the logarithimic case, corresponding to a superrotation which covers the sphere twice, the total power emitted still presents the Stefan-Boltzmann form but with an effective area which diverges logarithmically in the ultraviolet., Comment: 46 pages, 5 figures
