Nanoscale materials characterization often uses highly energetic probes which can rapidly damage beam-sensitive materials, such as hybrid organic–inorganic compounds. Reducing the probe dose minimizes the damage, but often at the cost of lower signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the acquired data. This work reports the optimization and validation of principal component analysis (PCA) and nonnegative matrix factorization for the postprocessing of low-dose nanoscale characterization data. PCA is found to be the best approach for data denoising. However, the popular scree plot-based method for separation of principal and noise components results in inaccurate or excessively noisy models of the heterogeneous original data, even after Poissonian noise weighting. Manual separation of principal and noise components produces a denoised model which more accurately reproduces physical features present in the raw data while improving SNR by an order of magnitude. However, manual selection is time-consuming and potentially subjective. To suppress these disadvantages, a deep learning-based component classification method is proposed. The neural network model can examine PCA components and automatically classify them with an accuracy of >99% and a rate of ∼2 component/s. Together, multivariate analysis and deep learning enable a deeper analysis of nanoscale materials’ characterization, allowing as much information as possible to be extracted.

International audience; Scanning transmission electron microscopy is a crucial tool for nanoscience, achieving sub-nanometric spatial resolution in both image and spectroscopic studies. This generates large datasets that cannot be analyzed without computational assistance. The so-called machine learning procedures can exploit redundancies and find hidden correlations. Principal component analysis (PCA) is the most popular approach to denoise data by reducing data dimensionality and extracting meaningful information; however, there are many open questions on the accuracy of reconstructions. We have used experiments and simulations to analyze the effect of PCA on quantitative chemical analysis of binary alloy (AuAg) nanoparticles using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Our results demonstrate that it is possible to obtain very good fidelity of chemical composition distribution when the signal-to-noise ratio exceeds a certain minimal level. Accurate denoising derives from a complex interplay between redundancy (data matrix size), counting noise, and noiseless data intensity variance (associated with sample chemical composition dispersion). We have suggested several quantitative bias estimators and noise evaluation procedures to help in the analysis and design of experiments. This work demonstrates the high potential of PCA denoising, but it also highlights the limitations and pitfalls that need to be avoided to minimize artifacts and perform reliable quantification.

2H-Benzotriazol-2-ylethylammonium bromide and iodide and its difluorinated derivatives are synthesized and employed as interlayers for passivation of formamidinium lead triiodide (FAPbI3) solar cells. In combination with PbI2 and PbBr2, these benzotriazole derivatives form two-dimensional (2D) Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites (RPPs) as evidenced by their crystal structures and thin film characteristics. When used to passivate n-i-p FAPbI3 solar cells, the power conversion efficiency improves from 20% to close to 22% by enhancing the open-circuit voltage. Quasi-Fermi level splitting experiments and scanning electron microscopy cathodoluminescence hyperspectral imaging reveal that passivation provides a reduced nonradiative recombi-nation at the interface between the perovskite and hole transport layer. Photoluminescence spectroscopy, angle-resolved grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering, and depth profiling X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies of the 2D/three-dimensional (3D) interface between the benzotriazole RPP and FAPbI3 show that a nonuniform layer of 2D perovskites is enough to passivate defects, enhance charge extraction, and decrease nonradiative recombination. Analytical studies of nanoparticles (NPs) are frequently based on huge datasets derived from hyperspectral images acquired using scanning transmission electron microscopy. These large datasets require machine learning computational tools to reduce dimensionality and extract relevant information. Principal component analysis (PCA) is a commonly used procedure to reconstruct information and generate a denoised dataset; however, several open questions remain regarding the accuracy and precision of reconstructions. Here, we use experiments and simulations to test the effect of PCA processing on data obtained from AuAg alloy NPs a few nanometers wide with different compositions. This study aims to address the reliability of chemical quantification after PCA processing. Our results show that the PCA treatment mitigates the contribution of Poisson noise and leads to better quantification, indicating that denoised results may be reliable from the point of view of both uncertainty and accuracy for properly planned experiments. However, the initial data need to be of sufficient quality: these results can only be obtained if the signal-to-noise ratio of input data exceeds a minimal value to avoid the occurrence of random noise bias in the PCA reconstructions.

Halide perovskite materials have promising performance characteristics for low-cost optoelectronic applications. Photovoltaic devices fabricated from perovskite absorbers have reached power conversion efficiencies above 25 per cent in single-junction devices and 28 per cent in tandem devices1,2. This strong performance (albeit below the practical limits of about 30 per cent and 35 per cent, respectively3) is surprising in thin films processed from solution at low-temperature, a method that generally produces abundant crystalline defects4. Although point defects often induce only shallow electronic states in the perovskite bandgap that do not affect performance5, perovskite devices still have many states deep within the bandgap that trap charge carriers and cause them to recombine non-radiatively. These deep trap states thus induce local variations in photoluminescence and limit the device performance6. The origin and distribution of these trap states are unknown, but they have been associated with light-induced halide segregation in mixed-halide perovskite compositions7 and with local strain8, both of which make devices less stable9. Here we use photoemission electron microscopy to image the trap distribution in state-of-the-art halide perovskite films. Instead of a relatively uniform distribution within regions of poor photoluminescence efficiency, we observe discrete, nanoscale trap clusters. By correlating microscopy measurements with scanning electron analytical techniques, we find that these trap clusters appear at the interfaces between crystallographically and compositionally distinct entities. Finally, by generating time-resolved photoemission sequences of the photo-excited carrier trapping process10,11, we reveal a hole-trapping character with the kinetics limited by diffusion of holes to the local trap clusters. Our approach shows that managing structure and composition on the nanoscale will be essential for optimal performance of halide perovskite devices. Photoemission electron microscopy images of trap states in halide peroskites, spatially correlated with their structural and compositional factors, may help in managing power losses in optoelectronic applications.

The transition towards electric vehicles and more sustainable transportation is dependent on lithium-ion battery (LIB) performance. Ni-rich layered transition metal oxides, such as NMC811 (LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2), are promising cathode candidates for LIBs due to their higher specific capacity and lower cost compared with lower Ni content materials. However, complex degradation mechanisms inhibit their use. In this work, tailored aging protocols are employed to decouple the effect of electrochemical stimuli on the degradation mechanisms in graphite/NMC811 full cells. Using these protocols, impedance measurements, and differential voltage analysis, the primary drivers for capacity fade and impedance rise are shown to be large state of charge changes combined with high upper cut-off voltage. Focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy highlights that extensive microscale NMC particle cracking, caused by electrode manufacturing and calendering, is present prior to aging and not immediately detrimental to the gravimetric capacity and impedance. Scanning transmission electron microscopy electron energy loss spectroscopy reveals a correlation between impedance rise and the level of transition metal reduction at the surfaces of aged NMC811. The present study provides insight into the leading causes for LIB performance fading, and highlights the defining role played by the evolving properties of the cathode particle surface layer., Tailored electrochemical protocols and characterisation methods provide a detailed account of degradation mechanisms in high energy lithium-ion batteries with nickel-rich cathodes.

The use of pulsed mode scanning electron microscopy cathodoluminescence (CL) for both hyperspectral mapping and time-resolved measurements is found to be useful for the study of hybrid perovskite films, a class of ionic semiconductors that have been shown to be beam sensitive. A range of acquisition parameters is analysed, including beam current and beam mode (either continuous or pulsed operation), and their effect on the CL emission is discussed. Under optimized acquisition conditions, using a pulsed electron beam, the heterogeneity of the emission properties of hybrid perovskite films can be resolved via the acquisition of CL hyperspectral maps. These optimized parameters also enable the acquisition of time-resolved CL of polycrystalline films, showing significantly shorter lived charge carriers dynamics compared to the photoluminescence analogue, hinting at additional electron beam-specimen interactions to be further investigated. This work represents a promising step to investigate hybrid perovskite semiconductors at the nanoscale with CL.

Perovskite colloidal nanocrystals have emerged as important new optical materials, with tuneable light emission across the visible spectrum, narrow linewidths for high colour purity, and quantum efficiencies approaching unity. These materials can be solution processed in large volumes at low cost making them promising for optoelectronic devices. The structure of nanocrystals influences the radiative and non-radiative recombination of carriers within them through trap states and Auger recombination. To optimise the emission properties it is vital to understand the relationship between the optical emission of individual nanocrystals and their structure, size, and composition. Here, we use nano-cathodoluminescence to relate the nanoscale optical emission of individual inorganic perovskite nanocrystals to their size. This approach reveals that larger nanocrystals exhibit brighter luminescence, indicating lower non-radiative losses compared to smaller nanocrystals. We also show nanoscale colour mixing with bright red and blue emission from individual CsPbI3 and CsPbCl3 nanocrystals respectively in mixed films. The optical and structural characterisation serve as a powerful approach to the study of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals that improves the fundamental understanding of quantum structures leading to improved optoelectronic devices.

This study reports a gram scale synthesis of a turbostratically aligned carbon material containing regions of graphite and few-layer graphene located in carbon-only nanodomains. The material, obtained from the combustion of magnesium in a carbon dioxide atmosphere, displays 2D and layered 3D molecular architectures. Of particular interest is that the introduction of an in-air high-temperature calcination process yields a carbon material possessing discrete turbostratic structural regions, as evidenced by Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction characterisations.

Transmission electron microscopes (TEM) are widely used in nanotechnology research. However, it is still challenging to characterize nanoscale objects; their small size coupled with dynamical diffraction makes interpreting real- or reciprocal-space data difficult. Scanning precession electron diffraction ((S)PED) represents an invaluable contribution, reducing the dynamical contributions to the diffraction pattern at high spatial resolution. Here a detailed analysis of wurtzite InP nanowires (30–40 nm in diameter) containing a screw dislocation and an associated wire lattice torsion is presented. It has been possible to characterize the dislocation with great detail (Burgers and line vector, handedness). Through careful measurement of the strain field and comparison with dynamical electron diffraction simulations, this was found to be compatible with a Burgers vector modulus equal to one hexagonal lattice cell parameter despite the observed crystal rotation rate being larger (ca. 20%) than that predicted by classical elastic theory for the nominal wire diameter. These findings corroborate the importance of the (S)PED technique for characterizing nanoscale materials.

Fluence-dependent photoluminescence and ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy are used to study the dynamic behavior of carriers in CsPbCl3 perovskite nanocrystals. At low excitation fluences, the radiative recombination rate is outcompeted by significant trapping of the charge carriers which then recombine non-radiatively, resulting in weak photoluminescence. As fluence is increased, the saturation of trap states deactivates these non-radiative relaxation paths giving rise to an increase in photoluminescence at first. However, with further increases in fluence, Auger recombination of multiexcitons results in a decline in photoluminescence efficiency. Analysis of this behavior yields an absorption cross-section at 400 nm (3.1 eV) of 0.24 ± 0.05 x 10-14 cm2. Transient photoluminescence and absorption measurements yielded values for single exciton trapping lifetime (1.6 ± 0.7 ns), biexciton and trion lifetimes (20 ± 3 ps and 157 ± 20 ps, respectively), single exciton radiative lifetime (12.7 ± 0.2 ns), intraband cooling lifetime (290 ± 37 fs) and exciton-exciton interaction energy (10 ± 2 meV).

The upscaling of perovskite solar cells to modules requires the patterning of the layer stack in individual cells that are monolithically interconnected in series. This interconnection scheme is composed of three lines, P1‐P3, which are scribed using a pulsed laser beam. The P3 scribe is intended to isolate the back contact layer of neighboring cells. Previous research has shown that the P3 patterning is often affected by undesired effects such as back contact delamination, flaking, and poor electrical isolation, as laser‐material interactions are not yet fully understood. In this study, the influence of the laser pulse duration on the electrical and compositional properties of P3 scribe lines is investigated. The results show that both ns and ps laser pulses are suitable for P3 patterning, with the ns pulse leading to higher open circuit voltage, higher fill factor, and higher power conversion efficiency. It is found that the longer pulse duration resulted in a larger amount of PbI2 formed within the P3 trench. Next to the P3 line edge, the formation of a thin Br‐rich layer at the perovskite/hole transport layer interface was observed when ns laser pulses were used, which extends up to 12 µm into the active area of the module. Both the formation of PbI2 and a more Br‐rich perovskite layer effectively passivate defects at the edges of the scribe line and block charge carriers in its vicinity. It is concluded that ns laser pulses are preferable for P3 patterning as they promote the formation of beneficial chemical phases, resulting in an improved photovoltaic performance.

Although perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have recently experienced significant progress, there are only scattered reports of PeLEDs with both high efficiency and long operational stability, calling for additional strategies to address this challenge. Here, we develop perovskite-molecule composite thin films for efficient and stable PeLEDs. The perovskite-molecule composite thin films consist of in-situ formed high-quality perovskite nanocrystals embedded in the electron-transport molecular matrix, which controls nucleation process of perovskites, leading to PeLEDs with a peak external quantum efficiency of 17.3% and half-lifetime of approximately 100 h. In addition, we find that the device degradation mechanism at high driving voltages is different from that at low driving voltages. This work provides an effective strategy and deep understanding for achieving efficient and stable PeLEDs from both material and device perspectives., The field of perovskite light-emitting diodes witnesses rapid development in both device processing strategies and performances. Here Wang et al. develop high-quality perovskite-molecule composite thin films and achieve high quantum efficiency of 17.3% and half-lifetime of 100 h.

The physicochemical properties used in numerous advanced nanostructured devices are directly controlled by the oxidation states of their constituents. In this work we combine electron energy-loss spectroscopy, blind source separation, and computed tomography to reconstruct in three dimensions the distribution of Fe and Fe ions in a FeO/FeO core/shell cube-shaped nanoparticle with nanometric resolution. In contrast to common procedures, this work demonstrates that halide substitution in Ruddlesden–Popper perovskites not only progressively modulates the bandgap, but it can also be a powerful tool to control the nanoscale phase segregation—by adjusting the halide ratio and therefore the spatial distribution of recombination centers. As a result, thin films of chloride‐rich perovskite are engineered—which appear transparent to the human eye—with controlled tunable emission in the green. This is due to a rational halide substitution with iodide or bromide leading to a spatial distribution of phases where the minor component is responsible for the tunable emission, as identified by combined hyperspectral photoluminescence imaging and elemental mapping. This work paves the way for the next generation of highly tunable transparent emissive materials, which can be used as light‐emitting pixels in advanced and low‐cost optoelectronics.

Quantitative chemical analysis on the nanoscale provides valuable information on materials and devices which can be used to guide further improvements to their performance. In particular, emerging families of technologically relevant composite materials such as organic–inorganic hybrid halide perovskites and metal-organic frameworks stand to benefit greatly from such characterization. However, these nanocomposites are also vulnerable to damage induced by analytical probes such as electron, X-ray, or neutron beams. Here the effect of electrons on a model hybrid halide perovskite is investigated, focusing on the acquisition parameters appropriate for energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM-EDX). The acquisition parameters are systematically varied to examine the relationship between electron dose, data quality, and beam damage. Five metrics are outlined to assess the quality of STEM-EDX data and severity of beam damage, further validated by dark field STEM imaging. Loss of iodine through vacancy creation is found to be the primary manifestation of electron beam damage in the perovskite specimen, and iodine content is seen to decrease exponentially with electron dose. This work demonstrates data acquisition and analysis strategies that can be used for studying electron beam damage and for achieving reliable quantification for a broad range of beam-sensitive materials.

IL@MOF (IL: ionic liquid; MOF: metal-organic framework) materials have been proposed as a candidate for solid-state electrolytes, combining the inherent non-flammability and high thermal and chemical stability of the ionic liquid with the host-guest interactions of the MOF. In this work, we compare the structure and ionic conductivity of a sodium ion containing IL@MOF composite formed from a microcrystalline powder of the zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF), ZIF-8 with a hierarchically porous sample of ZIF-8 containing both micro- and mesopores from a sol-gel synthesis. Although the crystallographic structures were shown to be the same by X-ray diffraction, significant differences in particle size, packing and morphology were identified by electron microscopy techniques which highlight the origins of the hierarchical porosity. After incorporation of Na0.1EMIM0.9TFSI (abbreviated to NaIL; EMIM = 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium; TFSI = bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide), the hierarchically porous composite exhibited a 40% greater filling capacity than the purely microporous sample which was confirmed by elemental analysis and digestive proton NMR. Finally, the ionic conductivity properties of the composite materials were probed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results showed that despite the 40% increased loading of NaIL in the NaIL@ZIF-8micro sample, the ionic conductivities at 25 °C were 8.4 × 10-6 and 1.6 × 10-5 S cm-1 for NaIL@ZIF-8meso and NaIL@ZIF-8micro respectively. These results exemplify the importance of the long range, continuous ion pathways contributed by the microcrystalline pores, as well as the limited contribution from the discontinuous mesopores to the overall ionic conductivity.

Molybdenum sulfide emerged as promising hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalyst thanks to its high intrinsic activity, however its limited active sites exposure and low conductivity hamper its performance. To address these drawbacks, the non-equilibrium nature of pulsed laser deposition (PLD) is exploited to synthesize self-supported hierarchical nanoarchitectures by gas phase nucleation and sequential attachment of defective molybdenum sulfide clusters. The physics of the process are studied by in situ diagnostics and correlated to the properties of the resulting electrocatalyst. The as-synthesized architectures have a disordered nanocrystalline structure, with nanodomains of bent, defective S-Mo-S layers embedded in an amorphous matrix, with excess sulfur and segregated molybdenum particles. Oxygen incorporation in this structure fosters the creation of amorphous oxide/oxysulfide nanophases with high electrical conductivity, enabling fast electron transfer to the active sites. The combined effect of the nanocrystalline pristine structure and the surface oxidation enhances the performance leading to small overpotentials, very fast kinetics (35.1 mV dec-1 Tafel slope) and remarkable long-term stability for continuous operation up to -1 A cm-2. This work shows possible new avenues in catalytic design arising from a non-equilibrium technique as PLD and the importance of structural and chemical control to improve the HER performance of MoS-based catalysts.

The operation of halide perovskite optoelectronic devices, including solar cells and LEDs, is strongly influenced by the mobility of ions comprising the crystal structure. This peculiarity is particularly true when considering the long-term stability of devices. A detailed understanding of the ion migration-driven degradation pathways is critical to design effective stabilization strategies. Nonetheless, despite substantial research in this first decade of perovskite photovoltaics, the long-term effects of ion migration remain elusive due to the complex chemistry of lead halide perovskites. By linking materials chemistry to device optoelectronics, this study highlights that electrical bias-induced perovskite amorphization and phase segregation is a crucial degradation mechanism in planar mixed halide perovskite solar cells. Depending on the biasing potential and the injected charge, halide segregation occurs, forming crystalline iodide-rich domains, which govern light emission and participate in light absorption and photocurrent generation. Additionally, the loss of crystallinity limits charge collection efficiency and eventually degrades the device performance.

Ni-rich layered cathode materials are among the most promising candidates for high-energy-density Li-ion batteries, yet their degradation mechanisms are still poorly understood. We report a structure-driven degradation mechanism for NMC811 (LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2), in which a proportion of the material exhibits a lowered accessible state of charge at the end of charging after repetitive cycling and becomes fatigued. Operando synchrotron long-duration X-ray diffraction enabled by a laser-thinned coin cell shows the emergence and growth in the concentration of this fatigued phase with cycle number. This degradation is structure driven and is not solely due to kinetic limitations or intergranular cracking: no bulk phase transformations, no increase in Li/Ni antisite mixing and no notable changes in the local structure or Li-ion mobility of the bulk are seen in aged NMCs. Instead, we propose that this degradation stems from the high interfacial lattice strain between the reconstructed surface and the bulk layered structure that develops when the latter is at states of charge above a distinct threshold of approximately 75%. This mechanism is expected to be universal in Ni-rich layered cathodes. Our findings provide fundamental insights into strategies to help mitigate this degradation process. Ni-rich layered cathode materials are among the most promising candidates for high energy density Li-ion batteries. However, the low cobalt containing materials suffer from rapid degradation, the underlying mechanism of which is still poorly understood. We herein report a novel structure-drive degradation mechanism for the NMC811(LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2) cathode, in which a proportion of the material exhibits a lowered accessible state-of-charge (SoC) at the end of charge after repetitive cycling, i.e. becomes fatigued. Ex-situ and operando long- duration high-resolution X-ray diffraction enabled by a laser-thinned coin cell design clearly shows the emergence of the fatigued phase and the increase in its population as the cycling progresses. We show that the fatigue degradation is a structure-driven process rather than originating solely due to kinetic limitations or inter-granular cracking. No bulk phase transformations or increase in Li/Ni antisite mixing were observed by diffraction; no significant change in the local structure or Li-ion mobility of the bulk were observed by 7Li solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Instead, we propose that the fatigue process is a result of the high interfacial lattice strain between the reconstructed surface and the bulk layered structure when the latter is at SoCs above a distinct threshold of ~75 %. This mechanism is expected to be universal to Ni-rich layer cathodes, and our findings provide a fundamental guide for designing effective approaches to mitigate such deleterious processes.

The operation of halide perovskite optoelectronic devices, including solar cells and LEDs, is strongly influenced by the mobility of ions comprising the crystal structure. This peculiarity is particularly true when considering the long‐term stability of devices. A detailed understanding of the ion migration‐driven degradation pathways is critical to design effective stabilization strategies. Nonetheless, despite substantial research in this first decade of perovskite photovoltaics, the long‐term effects of ion migration remain elusive due to the complex chemistry of lead halide perovskites. By linking materials chemistry to device optoelectronics, this study highlights that electrical bias‐induced perovskite amorphization and phase segregation is a crucial degradation mechanism in planar mixed halide perovskite solar cells. Depending on the biasing potential and the injected charge, halide segregation occurs, forming crystalline iodide‐rich domains, which govern light emission and participate in light absorption and photocurrent generation. Additionally, the loss of crystallinity limits charge collection efficiency and eventually degrades the device performance.

Hybrid metal halide perovskites have emerged as a potential photovoltaic material for low-cost thin film solar cells due to their excellent optoelectronic properties. However, high efficiencies obtained with lab-scale cells are difficult to replicate in large modules. The upscaling process requires careful optimization of multiple steps, such as laser scribing, which divides a module into serially connected cells using a pulsed laser beam. In this work, we characterize the effect of laser scribing on the perovskite layer adjacent to a P3 scribe line using analytical scanning and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy techniques. We demonstrate that lateral flow of residual thermal energy from picosecond laser pulses decomposes the perovskite layer over extended length scales. We propose that the exact nature of the change in perovskite composition is determined by the presence of preexisting PbI2 grains and hence by the original perovskite formation reaction. Furthermore, we show that along the P3 lines, the indium tin oxide contact is also damaged by high-fluence pulses. Our results provide a deeper understanding on the interaction between laser pulses and perovskite solar modules, highlighting the need to minimize material damage by careful tuning of both laser parameters and the device fabrication procedure.

Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells have exhibited power conversion efficiencies comparable to more established PV technologies thanks to their favourable optoelectronic properties, but low operational stability inhibits their commercialisation and widespread use. Many degradation pathways are possible and most of them are not currently well understood at the nanoscale due to the difficulty of characterising a perovskite solar cell's complex nanostructure. This work reviews the application of in-situ and operando electron microscopy to visualise the dynamic processes that occur in perovskite solar cells as various stimuli are applied inside a microscope column. Additionally, potential challenges and an outlook on future uses of this technique are briefly discussed.

Metal‐halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have had a transformative impact on the renewable energy landscape since they were first demonstrated just over a decade ago. Outstanding improvements in performance have been demonstrated through structural, compositional, and morphological control of devices, with commercialization now being a reality. Here the authors present an aerosol assisted solvent treatment as a universal method to obtain performance and stability enhancements in PSCs, demonstrating their methodology as a convenient, scalable, and reproducible post‐deposition treatment for PSCs. Their results identify improvements in crystallinity and grain size, accompanied by a narrowing in grain size distribution as the underlying physical changes that drive reductions of electronic and ionic defects. These changes lead to prolonged charge‐carrier lifetimes and ultimately increased device efficiencies. The versatility of the process is demonstrated for PSCs with thick (>1 µm) active layers, large‐areas (>1 cm2) and a variety of device architectures and active layer compositions. This simple post‐deposition process is widely transferable across the field of perovskites, thereby improving the future design principles of these materials to develop large‐area, stable, and efficient PSCs.

Some of the key challenges in the applications of graphene and carbon nanotubes are associated with their poor attachment to the substrate and poisoning of the catalyst by environmental contamination prior to the growth phase. Here we report a ‘protected catalyst’ technique which not only overcomes these challenges but also provides a new material production route compatible with many applications of carbon nanomaterials. The breakthrough technique involves capping the catalyst with a protective layer of a suitable material (examples include TiN, Cr, Ta) which protects the catalyst from environmental contaminants such as oxidation, etchant attack, etc., whilst maintaining carbon supply to the catalyst for the CVD growth of desired nanomaterial. A thin Fe catalyst layer remained protected due to the capping layer in the CF4 based reactive-ion-etching of SiO2. We show that the carbon nanostructures grown using this technique exhibit significantly improved adhesion to the substrate in sonication bath tests. We demonstrate the fabrication of 3D structures and CNT based vias in a buried catalyst arrangement using the protected catalyst technique. The technique also allows better control over various growth parameters such as number of graphene layers, growth rate, morphology, and structural quality.

In this work, we investigate the molecular composition and nanostructure of gasification charcoal (biochar) by comparing it with heat-treated fullerene arc-soot. Using ultrahigh resolution Fourier transform ion-cyclotron resonance and laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, Raman spectroscopy, and high resolution transmission electron microscopy we analyzed charcoal of low tar content obtained from gasification. Mass spectrometry revealed no magic number fullerenes such as C60 or C70 in the charcoal. The positive molecular ion m/ z 701, previously considered a graphitic part of the nanostructure, was found to be a breakdown product of pyrolysis and not part of the nanostructure. A higher mass distribution of ions similar to that found in thermally treated fullerene soot indicates that they share a nanostructure. Recent insights into the formation of all carbon fullerenes reveal that conditions in charcoal formation are not optimal for the formation of fullerenes, but instead, curved carbon structures coalesce into fulleroid-like structures. Microscopy and spectroscopy support such a stacked, fulleroid-like nanostructure, which was explored using reactive molecular dynamics simulations.

Organo-metal halide perovskite demonstrates a large potential for achieving highly efficient photovoltaic devices. The scaling-up process represents one of the major challenges to exploit this technology at the industrial level. Here, the scaling-up of perovskite solar modules from 5 × 5 to 10 × 10 cm2substrate area is reported by blade coating both the CH3NH3PbI3perovskite and spiro-OMeTAD layers. The sequential deposition approach is used in which both lead iodide (PbI2) deposition and the conversion step are optimized by using additives. The PbI2solution is modified by adding methylammonium iodide (MAI) which improves perovskite crystallinity and pore filling of the mesoporous TiO2scaffold. Optimization of the conversion step is achieved by adding a small concentration of water into the MAI-based solution, producing large cubic CH3NH3PbI3grains. The combination of the two modifications leads to a power conversion efficiency of 14.7% on a perovskite solar module with an active area of 47 cm2.

Electrochemical reactivity of the perovskite's halides has been reported for both molecular and polymeric hole selective layers (HSLs), and here it is shown that also NiO brings about this decomposition mechanism. Employing NiO as an HSL in p–i–n PSCs with power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.8%, noncapacitive hysteresis is found in the dark, which is attributable to the bias-induced degradation of perovskite/NiO interface. The possibility of electrochemically decoupling NiO from the perovskite via the introduction of a buffer layer is explored. Employing a hybrid magnesium-organic interlayer, the noncapacitive hysteresis is entirely suppressed and the device's electrical stability is improved. At the same time, the PCE is improved up to 18% thanks to reduced interfacial charge recombination, which enables more efficient hole collection resulting in higher Voc and FF.

Halide perovskites are emerging as valid alternatives to conventional photovoltaic active materials owing to their low cost and high device performances. This material family also shows exceptional tunability of properties by varying chemical components, crystal structure, and dimensionality, providing a unique set of building blocks for new structures. Here, highly stable self-assembled lead–tin perovskite heterostructures formed between low bandgap 3D and higher bandgap 2D components are demonstrated. A combination of surface-sensitive X-ray diffraction, spatially resolved photoluminescence, and electron microscopy measurements is used to reveal that microstructural heterojunctions form between high bandgap 2D surface crystallites and lower bandgap 3D domains. Furthermore, in situ X-ray diffraction measurements are used during film formation to show that an ammonium thiocyanate additive delays formation of the 3D component and thus provides a tunable lever to substantially increase the fraction of 2D surface crystallites. These novel heterostructures will find use in bottom cells for stable tandem photovoltaics with a surface 2D layer passivating the 3D material, or in energy transfer devices requiring controlled energy flow from localized surface crystallites to the bulk.

Operational stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is rapidly becoming one of the pressing bottlenecks for their upscaling and integration of such promising photovoltaic technology. Instability of the hole transport layer (HTL) has been considered as one of the potential origins of short life-time of the PSCs. In this work, by varying the molecular weight (MW) of doped poly(triarylamine)(PTAA) HTL, we improved by one order of magnitude the charge mobility inside the HTL and the charge transfer at the perovskite/HTL interface. We demonstrate that this occurs via the enhancement of polaron delocalization on the polymeric chains through the combined effect of doping strategy and MW tuning. By using high MW PTAA doped combining three different dopant, we demonstrate stable PSCs with typical power conversion efficiencies above 20%, retain more than 90% of the initial efficiency after 1080 h thermal stress at 85 °C and 87% of initial efficiency after 160 h exposure against 1 sun light soaking. By using this doping-MW strategy, we realized perovskite solar modules with an efficiency of 17% on an active area of 43 cm2, keeping above 90% of the initial efficiency after 800 h thermal stress at 85 °C. These results, obtained in ambient conditions, pave the way toward the industrialization of PSC-based photovoltaic technology.

The upscaling of perovskite solar cells is one of the challenges that must be addressed to pave the way toward the commercial development of this technology. As for other thin-film photovoltaic technologies, upscaling requires the fabrication of modules composed of series-connected cells. In this work we demonstrate for the first time the interconnection of inverted modules with NiOx using a UV ns laser, obtaining a 10.2 cm2 minimodule with a 15.9% efficiency on the active area, the highest for a NiOx based perovskite module. We use optical microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and transfer length measurement to optimize the interconnection. The results are implemented in a complete electrical simulation of the cell-to-module losses to evaluate the experimental results and to provide an outlook on further development of single junction and multijunction perovskite modules.

The technology of perovskite-based solar cells is evolving rapidly, reaching certified power conversion efficiency values now exceeding 20 %. One of the main drawbacks hindering progress in the field is the long-term stability of the cells: the mixed halide perovskites used in most devices are sensitive to humidity and degrade on a timescale varying from hours to weeks. The degradation mechanisms are poorly understood, but likely arise from combined physical and chemical modifications at the nanometer scale. The characterization of pristine and degraded materials is difficult owing to their complex chemical and physical structure and their relatively poor stability. In this work, we investigated the changes in local composition and morphology of a standard device after 2 months of air exposure in the dark, using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) with nanometer resolution for imaging and analysis. Because of a state-of-the-art technique that combines STEM and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and the use of different decomposition algorithms for multivariate analysis, we highlighted the migration of elements across the interfaces between the layers comprising the device. We also noticed a morphological degradation of the hole-transporting layer (HTL), representing one of the main factors enabling the infiltration of moisture in the device, which results in reduced performance.

The power conversion efficiency of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells has soared over the past ten years and currently rivals those of crystalline silicon and other thin-film solar cells. Most of the research effort so far has been focused on three-dimensional (3 D) perovskite crystals, producing devices with very high efficiency but poor operational and environmental stability. Two-dimensional (2 D) Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite has recently shown its potential as a highly stable light absorber, albeit with low efficiency. This work reviews the current progress in attaining both high efficiency and stability in solar cells by using 2 D perovskite. In particular, the focus is on multidimensional perovskite as a way to combine the best characteristics of 3 D and 2 D perovskites. Future challenges and potential methods to boost the performance of multidimensional perovskite solar cells further are briefly presented.

We demonstrate a versatile protocol to be used for determining the effectiveness of photocatalysts in degrading indoor air concentration (ppb) volatile organic carbons (VOCs), illustrating this with a titanium dioxide based catalyst, and the VOC 2-propanol. The protocol takes advantage of field asymmetric ion mobility spectroscopy (FAIMS), an analysis tool that is capable of continuously identifying and monitoring the concentration of VOCs such as 2-propanol and acetone at the ppb level. The continuous nature of FAIMS allows detailed kinetic analysis, and long-term reactions, offering a significant advantage over gas chromatography, a batch process traditionally used in air purification characterization. The use of FAIMS in photocatalytic air purification has only recently been used for the first time, and with the protocol illustrated here, the flexibility in allowing alternative VOCs and photocatalysts to be tested using comparable protocols offers a unique system to elucidate photocatalytic air purification reactions at low concentrations.
