1. The forgotten pillar of sustainability: development of the S-assessment tool to evaluate Organizational Social Sustainability

Abstract

Pursuing sustainable development has become a global imperative, underscored adopting of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). At the heart of this agenda lies the recognition of social sustainability as a pivotal component, emphasizing the need for inclusive societies where every individual can thrive. Despite its significance, social sustainability remains a "forgotten pillar," often overshadowed by environmental concerns. In response, this paper presents the development and validation of the S-Assessment Tool for Social Sustainability, a comprehensive questionnaire designed to evaluate organizations' performance across critical dimensions such as health and wellness, gender equality, decent work, and economic growth, reducing inequalities, and responsible production and consumption. The questionnaire was constructed on the critical dimensions identified through a systematic and narrative hybrid approach to the analysis of peer-reviewed literature. The framework has been structured around the values of the SDGs. It aims to empower organizations to better understand and address their social impact, fostering positive change and contributing to the collective effort towards a more equitable and sustainable future. Through collaborative partnerships and rigorous methodology, this research underscores the importance of integrating social sustainability into organizational practices and decision-making processes, ultimately advancing the broader agenda of sustainable development.

2. A Greed(y) Training Strategy to Attract High School Girls to Undertake Studies in ICT

Abstract

It has been observed in many studies that female students in general are unwilling to undertake a course of study in ICT. Recent literature has also pointed out that undermining the prejudices of girls with respect to these disciplines is very difficult in adolescence, suggesting that, to be effective, awareness programs on computer disciplines should be offered in pre-school or lower school age. On the other hand, even assuming that large-scale computer literacy programs can be immediately activated in lower schools and kindergartens, we can't wait for >15-20 years before we can appreciate the effectiveness of these programs. The scarcity of women in ICT has a tangible negative impact on countries' technological innovation, which requires immediate action. In this paper, we describe a strategy, and the details of a number of programs coordinated by the Engineering and Computer Science Departments at Sapienza University, to make high school girl students aware of the importance of new technologies and ICT. 3. The TESTMED Project Experience. Process-aware Enactment of Clinical Guidelines through Multimodal Interfaces

Abstract

Healthcare is one of the largest business segments in the world and is a critical area for future growth. In order to ensure efficient access to medical and patient-related information, hospitals have invested heavily in improving clinical mobile technologies and spread their use among doctors. Notwithstanding the benefits of mobile technologies towards a more efficient and personalized delivery of care procedures, there are also indications that their use may have a negative impact on patient-centeredness and often places many cognitive and physical demands on doctors, making them prone to make medical errors. To tackle this issue, in this paper we present the main outcomes of the project TESTMED, which aimed at realizing a clinical system that provides operational support to doctors using mobile technologies for delivering care to patients, in a bid to minimize medical errors. The system exploits concepts from Business Process Management on how to manage a specific class of care procedures, called clinical guidelines, and how to support their execution and mobile orchestration among doctors. As a viable solution for doctors' interaction with the system, we investigated the use of vocal and touch interfaces. User evaluation results indicate a good usability of the system.

8. A Boosting Approach to eContent Development for Learners with Special Needs

Abstract

Of late there has been a growing interest and effort toward meeting the requirements of persons with special needs. However, most of the accessibility standards and guidelines that have been proposed have been developed by adopting a domain independent and often "technical" perspective. Such proposals are therefore often not sufficient to achieve accessibility goals in specific application areas such as eLearning. This paper presents a boosting approach/framework toward the development of more effective and usable accessibility indications for authors of didactic content, which are currently being fed and tested within the Italian context of the VICE project. This approach is intended to take into account the aforementioned issue and to make a step forward with respect to existing accessibility proposals and approaches in the eLearning domain. In particular, we discuss our design method for increasing the quality of eLearning materials for learners with special needs and an authoring tool, "aLearning", to support eLearning content authors in their development of didactic material matching those needs. Abstract

Phishing is the fraudulent attempt to obtain sensitive information by disguising oneself as a trustworthy entity in digital communication. It is a type of cyber attack often successful because users are not aware of their vulnerabilities or are unable to understand the risks. This article presents a systematic literature review conducted to draw a “big picture” of the most important research works performed on human factors and phishing. The analysis of the retrieved publications, framed along the research questions addressed in the systematic literature review, helps in understanding how human factors should be considered to defend against phishing attacks. Abstract

We describe an approach for multiparadigmatic visual access to databases, which is proposed to achieve seamless integration of different interaction paradigms. The user is provided with an adaptive interface augmented by a user model, supporting different visual representations of both data and queries. The visual representations are characterized on the basis of the chosen visual formalisms, namely forms, diagrams, and icons. To access different databases, a unified data model, the Graph Model, is used as a common underlying formalism to which databases, expressed in the most popular data models, can be mapped. Graph Model databases are queried through the adaptive interface. The semantics of the query operations is formally defined in terms of graphical primitives. Such a formal approach permits us to define the concept of 'atomic query,' which is the minimal portion of a query that can be transferred from one interaction paradigm to another and processed by the system. Since certain interaction modalities and visual representations are more suitable for certain user classes, the system can suggest to the user the most appropriate interaction modality as well as the visual representation, according to the user model. Some results on user model construction are presented. Abstract

International audience; The problem of how to provide transparent access to heterogeneous information sources while maintaining their autonomy already appeared decades ago and has been addressed by data integration techniques. Those techniques enable the interaction between clients and data sources through a centralized access point, and uniform query interfaces that give users the illusion of querying a homogeneous system. However, they work under certain hypotheses, including moderately static scenarios, shared understanding of the domain of interest (in the form of a global schema or ontology), and a closed, or at least access-controlled, set of participating sources. All these hypotheses do not hold anymore in the current web comprising millions of autonomous peers, having no centralized control. In such an environment, research is needed to discover techniques for schema matching, mapping discovery, query processing, quality and trust management in such environments.

Abstract

In many important applications, the search for non-standard data types is essential. E.g., digital libraries and multimedia database systems offer content-based search functionality for images and 3D documents. Contrary to the annotation-based approach, where information manually attached to the data objects if used for retrieval, in content-based retrieval, automatically derived meta-data is used. However, the quality of the meta data is crucial, and often, it a priori is not clear which meta data is best suited to execute a user-issued query. Owing to the multi-meta data problem, two crucial questions arise: (a) how can different meta data (feature vector) schemas be benchmarked to assess their suitability for solving the retrieval problem effectively, and (b) how to support the user with issuing queries to the retrieval system, considering different choices for the type of meta data to engage in the search. In this paper, we address these questions in a two-fold contribution. Based on the DARE visualization system, we first introduce an approach for the visual benchmarking of multiple meta data formats on a ground truth benchmark, supporting the optimization stage of the multimedia database design. We secondly propose a simple, yet effective visual interface to multiple, long lists (rankings) of answer objects for the user. The latter, based on relevance feedback information supplied by the user, allows the effective identification of the meta data schema best suited for executing the similarity queries at hand.
