There are currently serious challenges that place great pressure on soil resources. The sustainable management of agricultural land is essential to alleviate these pressures and to increase the contribution of these soils to some of the main challenges facing society, such as adaptation and mitigation of climate change. Within the scope of the EJP SOIL, an organized consultation was carried out with several administrators of the soil resource to assess the knowledge and management of agricultural soils in Portugal. This study aimed to identify important barriers and challenges currently affecting agricultural soil knowledge, but also to assess opportunities to overcome these barriers. Among the most important barriers identified are those of a technical, networking, communication, and economic nature, which greatly limit the development and full use of knowledge from soil research. The results of this study suggest that sustainable soil management will benefit from: increased funding for research, establishment of long-term experimental trials, creation of knowledge networks and national infrastructures linked to those operating at European level and development of regional strategies for soil management. All these measures contribute to healthier, resilient and sustainable soil ecosystems in Portugal., Atualmente existem sérios desafios que colocam pressão no recurso solo. A gestão sustentável dos solos agrícolas é indispensável para atenuar estas pressões e para aumentar a contribuição destes solos para alguns dos principais desafios da sociedade, como a adaptação e mitigação das alterações climáticas. No âmbito do EJP SOIL foi realizada uma consulta organizada a vários administradores do recurso solo para avaliar o conhecimento e gestão do solo agrícola em Portugal. Este estudo teve como objetivo identificar importantes barreiras e desafios que afetam atualmente o conhecimento do solo agrícola, mas também avaliar oportunidades para superar essas barreiras. Entre as barreiras mais importantes identificadas estão as de natureza técnica, networking, comunicação e económicas, que muito limitam o desenvolvimento e o pleno uso do conhecimento proveniente da investigação em solos. Os resultados deste estudo sugerem que a gestão sustentável do solo será beneficiada com: aumento de financiamento para investigação, estabelecimento de ensaios experimentais de longo prazo, criação de redes de conhecimento e infraestruturas nacionais ligadas às que operam a nível europeu e desenvolvimento de estratégias regionais de gestão do solo. O conjunto destas medidas contribuem para ecossistemas de solo mais saudáveis, resilientes e sustentáveis em Portugal.

O excesso de sais solúveis na solução do solo (salinidade) ou o domínio do sódio no complexo de troca (sodicidade) são fenómenos que levam à degradação das funções do solo. É essencial monitorizar as áreas de risco de forma a prevenir ou mitigar os processos de salinização e os seus efeitos negativos. Os métodos de indução eletromagnética (EMI), aliados a algoritmos de inversão, têm sido usados para analisar o solo em profundidade, de forma não invasiva, medido a condutividade elétrica do solo (σ) a partir da sua superfície e permitindo medições de grandes áreas de forma eficiente e representativa. Neste trabalho analisaram-se quatro casos de estudo na Lezíria Grande de Vila Franca de Xira. Foram colhidas amostras de solo até uma profundidade de 135 cm para determinação laboratorial da condutividade elétrica do extrato de saturação (ECe), da percentagem de sódio de troca (ESP) e da razão de adsorção de sódio (SAR). Simultaneamente foram feitas medições de σ com um sensor EMI (EM38). Obteve-se boa correlação entre σ e ECe, SAR e ESP e foi possível classificar corretamente o solo quanto à salinidade e sodicidade em 88.6% das amostras., Revista de Ciências Agrárias, vol. 43 n.º 2 (2020)

The mitigation of soil salinization and/or sodicization phenomena are considered one of the main challenges of irrigated agriculture. In Portugal, Lezíria Grande of Vila Franca de Xira is a region with increased salinization and sodicization risks due to the influence of tidal movement on groundwater. This study aimed to evaluate soil water and salt dynamics in an irrigated Fluvisol with a crop rotation of maize and annual ryegrass and to predict irrigation-induced risks of soil salinization. We first calibrated the Hydrus-1D model for predicting soil water flow and solute transport with observed field data (from June 2017 to October 2018). Hydrus-1D successfully simulated soil water content (RMSE= 0.019 m3m-3 and R2= 0.94), the total dissolved solids (TDS) in the soil (RMSE= 0.212 g L-1 and R2= 0.77) and the reduction in water uptake by roots due to osmotic stress. Afterward we evaluate future risks of soil salinization performing a scenario analysis considering irrigation with different water qualities (with an electrical conductivity of the irrigation water, ECw, of 1.5, 3 and 5 dS m-1). We observed that when the ECw increases to 5 dS m-1, the average solute concentration in the root zone rises to levels above the threshold tolerance of maize. Hydrus-1D successfully simulated soil water content and the total dissolved solids and is a very useful tool in planning and managing irrigation and in predicting soil salinity risks.

Tree water uptake is often estimated based in a crop coefficient kc, a ratio of the tree water uptake and a reference evapotranspiration, ET0. The concept behind estimating tree crop coefficient implies that data should be representative of the population of trees analyzed. Ideally it would require the monitoring of a large number of trees in each treatment population. This paper reports on a scaling method to establish stand-level transpiration estimates and crop coefficients from individual sampled tree sap flow measurements. The scaling technique was implemented for individual tree sap flow measurements on the following irrigation treatments: A, fully-irrigated; B, irrigated to provide for approximately 60% of crop evapotranspiration; C, irrigated to provide for 100% of crop evapotranspiration during three critical phase periods: before-flowering, at beginning of pit-hardening and before crop-harvesting, and dry-farming treatment D. Results show that stand transpiration T depart from individual tree transpiration values. They consequently were used to establish crop, kc and water stress, ks coefficients to account for the cluster’s characteristics and degree of tree’s water uptake. Using the individual tree transpiration rates would be less appropriate.

Utilizando plantas de Sorgo Sacarino, investigou-se a possibilidade de atenuação do efeito inibitório da salinidade pela aplicação de fertilização azotada. As plantas foram crescidas em solo, numa estufa, e regadas com três níveis de solução de cloreto de sódio (0, 5 e 15 g L-1 NaCl) e três níveis de solução de nitrato de amónio (0, 0,4 e 0,6 g L-1 NH4NO3), num desenho experimental 3 × 3, com 4 repetições, num total de 36 vasos. De um modo geral, as plantas toleraram bem a irrigação com 5 g L-1 de NaCl mas mostraram sintomas severos com a irrigação de 15 g L-1. Assim, no final do ensaio, enquanto a biomassa seca das plantas irrigadas com 5 g L-1 era apenas ligeiramente inferior às regadas com água corrente, as plantas regadas com 15 g L-1 tinham menos 80% de peso seco. Os parâmetros fisiológicos medidos mostraram um padrão semelhante ao da biomassa, ou seja, pouco afectados pela menor salinidade mas muito inibidos pela maior (15 g L-1). A fertilização com azoto melhorou o crescimento das plantas e alguns outros parâmetros. Conclui-se assim que, na fase inicial de desenvolvimento das plantas de sorgo (25 dias), objecto deste ensaio, o azoto beneficia o crescimento das plantas expostas ao sal, embora, com base nos valores de fotossíntese, a concentração de 0,4 g L-1 seja mais benéfica que a de 0,6 g L-1.

We evaluated the influence of the combinations of four N levels with three NaCl levels, applied through irrigation, on leaf N, P, K, Ca, Mg, and Na concentrations of sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor ssp. saccharatum), in two consecutive years of an experiment established on a Eutric Fluvisol in Alvalade-Sado region, equipped with a drip irrigation system ("Triple Linear Source"). The relationships between leaf nutrient concentrations and dry matter production (stems, leaves, and aerial biomass), and between N and NaCl levels and the leaf nutrient concentrations were also searched. It was nitrogen availability in soil that, more than salinity, affected nutrient uptake, with reflexes on the leaf concentrations and the yields. Leaf N concentration was the best indicator for predicting the stems production of sweet sorghum., Avaliou-se o efeito das combinações de quatro níveis diferenciados de N com três níveis de NaCl, veiculados ao solo pela água de rega, nas concentrações foliares de N, P, K, Ca, Mg e Na em sorgo sacarino (Sorghum bicolor ssp. saccharatum), em dois anos consecutivos de um ensaio instalado num Fluvissolo Êutrico, em Alvalade-Sado, provido de um sistema de rega gota-a-gota ("Fonte tripla linear"). Pesquisaram-se relações entre os teores foliares dos nutrientes e a produção de matéria seca (caules, folhas + panículas e total) e entre níveis de N e de NaCl e teores foliares médios de nutrientes. Foi a disponibilidade do azoto no solo que, mais do que a salinidade, afetou a absorção de nutrientes, com reflexo nos teores foliares e na produção. O teor foliar de N foi o melhor indicador na previsão da produção de caules do sorgo sacarino.

Mestrado em Gestão e Conservação de Recursos Naturais - Instituto Superior de Agronomia / Universidade de Évora This work aims to predict the salinization and sodification in two soils when irrigated with saline waters combined with different fertigation levels. In a three years period, two experimental fields were set up with maize irrigated with a Triple emitter source (TES) irrigation system. The impact in the two soils (Hortic Antrosol and Eutric Fluvisol) was assessed through soil solution and soil samples collected at the end of each irrigation cycle and after the fall/winter rainfall washout of the soil. Electrical conductivity (EC) was used as a salinity indicator, and the exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) and sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) were used to characterize soil sodicity. In order to predict soil quality, the relationship between such indicators were studied with a stepwise multiple regression analysis scheme in a total of 1500 observations. An exchangeable Na+ mass balance was established for each treatment to 60 cm depth, as the difference between the final and initial total masses. The results confirm that t the Fluvisol shows a tendency towards salinization, since insufficient Na+ lixiviation occurred throughout the soil profile even after the fall/winter rainy season. The Antrosol however showed favourable to salts lixiviation after the irrigation cycles and more so after the rainfall season.
