Somatic mutations in the Notch gene cause uncommitted cells to express the Notch pathway, which controls cell determination during development, and the cells stuck in the proliferative undifferentiated state cause neoplasia. The normal differentiation of cells is also affected if the pathway is expressed in nonterminally differentiated cells or if it is suppressed in cells which normally express the pathway. Studies conducted on human epithelium, as cervical tissue, show that in situ and invasive squamous cell carcinomas and adenocarcinomas show activity of the Notch gene which the normal epithelial cells do not.
