The aim of this present work was to examine statistical errors in published veterinary science articles. A total of 204 published articles (SCI or SCI-Exp) were used in this study. The articles were chosen from among those indexed in PubMed database between the years 2010 and 2014, inclusive. A total of 199 articles had at least one statistical error. The most frequently encountered statistical error among the articles published in journals indexed in SCI and in SCI-E was “errors in summarizing data”. No statistical error was found in 2.45% (n=5) of 204 (SCI: 0.98% (1/102), SCI-E: 3.92% (4/102)) articles. To reduce and prevent statistical errors in publications, the researchers must have a basic knowledge of statistics and during the study process they must consult field experts. While reviewing, the reviewers have to redirect the publications to statistical editors when needed and most importantly during the process of editing, the editors have to direct the publications to a statistics reviewer.

Objective: Kidney transplantation provides better survival and quality of life. Non-adherence to immunosuppressive treatment is a prognostic indicator for poor long-term post-transplantation outcomes. Questionnaires are one of the instruments for adherence evaluation. We aimed to transculturally adapt and validate the Basel Assessment of Adherence to Immunosuppressive Medication Scale Interview Questionnaire among Turkish kidney recipients. Methods: The Basel Assessment of Adherence to Immunosuppressive Medication Scale Interview Questionnaire was applied to 125 recipients. The questionnaire consisted of 5 questions (Q) and a 10 cm Visual analogue scale assessing overall medication adherence over the last 4 weeks except Q4. Q4 assessed adherence over the last year. Guillemin protocol was used for translation and transcultural adaptation. Psychometric tests were performed for reliability (kappa coefficient and Cronbach’s alpha) and validation (content and construct validities). Results: A total of 125 adult kidney recipients, followed for at least 1 year after transplantation were included. The mean following time was 63.9 ± 44.8 months. The mean serum creatinine level was 1.45 ± 0.77 mg/dL and the eGFR value was 60.3 ± 24.4 mL/min/1.73 m². The participants were on tacrolimus- (60.5%), cyclosporine- (26.6%), and everolimus-based (12.9%) immunosuppressive regimen. There was no disagreement about the processes including translation in Turkish, and re-translation to English between the researchers. The transculturally adapted questionnaire has a kappa coefficient of 0.915 which indicates excellent reliability, and a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.454 which indicates acceptable internal consistency. For construct validity, factorial loads were 0.756, 0.779, 0.829, 0.393, and 0.032 for questions 1a, 1b, 2, 3, and 4, respectively. Conclusion: We conclude that the validated Turkish version of the BAASIS© Interview Questionnaire with satisfactory psychometric tests can contribute a practical approach to determine immunosuppressive treatment adherence in Turkish kidney recipients. Statistical shape analysis involves methods that use geometric information obtained from objects. The most important input to the use of geometric information in statistical shape analysis is landmarks. Missing data in shape analysis occurs when there is a loss of information about landmark coordinates. The loss of data in the cartesian coordinates of landmarks makes that landmark unusable and causes the releated unit to be dropped out of the survey. Performances are evaluated for the following methods used in the estimation of missing data; EM algorithm, multiple regression imputation, Bayesian principal component analysis, probabilistic principal component analysis, Inverse non-linear principal component analysis, non-linear estimation by iterative partial least squares principal component analysis and proposed Min(F) and Max(F) approaches in the thesis. Landmark counts were taken as 3, 6, 9, 12 and sample sizes were taken as 30, 50, 100 in the simulation study. The data are generated based on multivariate normal distribution from isotropic and non-isotropic models and 10 different simulation scenarios are considered. The best and the most different result in the performance evaluation according to small, medium and large sample sizes is the Min(F) criterion of the F-approximation algorithm proposed in the thesis study. 146

Sensitive question methods are used when the subject under investigation is illegal or undesirable, and respondents are unwilling to give truthful answers to the questions. In our study intended to antibiotics prescription, we investigated insistence of patients and their try to force physician for prescription, by using sensitive question methods. There are many methods account for sensitive subjects, we used crosswise model which is one of the sensitive question methods. The crosswise model has developed for sensitive questions which participants are hesitant to answer directly. In this method, participants receive two questions which one of them is a sensitive question and another one is a non-sensitive. The probability of the non-sensitive question is known to the researcher. To answer the questions, participants are asked to select -A- if both items have the same answer or they are asked to select -B- if the two items do not have the same answer, in this way the sensitive question is not asked directly. For this study a cross-sectional survey using a validated self-administered questionnaire was held in Bursa city. For the sensitive question we asked respondents if they force the physician to prescribe antibiotics with complaining of unrealistic health symptoms. The non-sensitive item asked respondents about their birthday: -Is your birthday in January, February, or March?- In our study, a total of 1050 questionnaires was applied to 1050 patients by Uludag University. As a result of application, 30% of the patients were forced the physician to prescribe antibiotics.

Missing data may occur in every scientific studies. Statistical shape analysis involves methods that use geometric information obtained from objects. The most important input to the use of geometric information in statistical shape analysis is landmarks. Missing data in shape analysis occurs when there is a loss of information about landmark cartesian coordinates. The aim of the study is to propose F approach algorithm for estimating missing landmark coordinates and compare the performance of F approach with generally accepted missing data estimation methods, EM algorithm, PCA based methods such as Bayesian PCA, Nonlinear Estimation by Iterative Partial Least Squares PCA, Inverse non-linear PCA, Probabilistic PCA and regression imputation methods. Landmark counts were taken as 3, 6, 9 and sample sizes were taken as 5, 10, 30, 50, 100 in the simulation study. The data are generated based on multivariate normal distribution with positively defined variance-covariance matrices from isotropic models. In simulation study three different simulation scenarios and simulation based real data are considered with 1000 repetations. The best and the most different result in the performance evaluation according to all sample sizes is the Min (F) criteria of the F approach algorithm proposed in the study. In case of three landmarks which is only the proposed F approach and regression assignment method can be applied, Min (F) criteria give best results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SUMMARY: Craniofacial morphology is a risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. The general aim of this study was to investigate the craniofacial shape differences in adults with and without obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, using geometric morphometric methods. A descriptive study conducted in 106 adult Turkish subjects, consisting of 50 patients with OSAS diagnosed by polysomnography and 56 non-OSAS controls. Three dimensional craniofacial scanning processes were performed on patient subjects on the same day as the PSG. Twelve standard craniofacial landmarks were collected from each subject’s 3D craniofacial scan. Geometric morphometric analysis was used to compare the craniofacial shape differences between the OSAS and non-OSAS control groups. No statistically significant difference in terms of general shape in face shapes was found between the OSAS group and control group. However, local significance differences were found. There were significant differences between the groups in some of the interlandmark distances: 11 % of the interlandmark distances were greater in OSAS patients, and 29 % were greater in controls. Greater measured distances in OSAS are concentrated in the nasal region. In the control group, the difference is not concentrated in a specific region. Given the relationship of craniofacial structural alterations and sleep disordered breathing, we hypothesized that inter-landmark distance measurements in the craniofacial anatomy of patients might be predictive of OSA.

Disability Prevalence ,Capture-Recapture ,Extended Family ,Nuclear Family - Abstract
Objective: Depending on the changing definition of disability and its classification systems in the world, the data collection criteria regarding the profile of those with disabilities in Turkey have been exposed to transformation as well. There are very few family based studies conducted with samples representing Turkey, yet there is a great need for such a scientific data. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of disabled individuals with respect to their disability types in Turkey. Material and Methods: In this study, Lincoln-Petersen, Chapman and Bailey Capture-Recapture methods were applied to estimate the population size of nuclear and extended families with at least one disabled individual and disability prevalence in Turkey. Uludag University students were regarded as sample population to represent Turkey because the students came from all regions of Turkey. To generalize the study, the students were asked to provide information about their families. Results: Out of the 38.258 students, the number of nuclear family with at least one disabled individual is estimated with Bailey method is 637, with Chapman method is 649 and with Lincoln-Petersen is 833. While the number of extended family with at least one disable individual s estimated with Bailey method is 4.608, with Chapman method is 4.625 and with Lincoln-Petersen is 4.898. Conclusion:When the role and importance of family in Turkish society is considered, education of people with disabilities, rehabilitation, social security status, economic living conditions and the socio-cultural living conditions, these needs can be primarily addressed by the means of family base system. In our findings the prevalence of nuclear and extended family with at least one disabled person in Turkey is estimated to be ranging from 1.67% to 2.18% and 12.04% to 12.80% respectively, Firat University Scientific Research Projects Management Unit, This study was supported by Uludag University Scientific Research Project. Vitamin B12. Folic acid. Cognitive performance ,B12 vitamini. Folik asit. Bilişsel performans - Abstract
Vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency is an important public health problem in the developing countries. It is well known that vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency has negative effects on cognitive functions and is associated with increased risk for dementia. This situation only doesn't effect the hematological system, it also effects neurological system without hematological involvement. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of these vitamins on hematological parameters and cognitive performance. Between 2011-2013 years, 235 patients who referred to the Uludag University Neurology policlinic with complaint of forgetfullness were investigated retrospectively. There was no statistical relation between low blood vitamin B12 and folic acid levels and cognitive performance. In the older age groups folat deficiency was more common when compared with younger age patients and this was statistically significant ( p=0,044). Vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency can be observed especially in the elderly people, and permanent neurological deficits secondary to this deficiency could be easily prevented by vitamin replacement., Gelişmekte olan ülkelerde Vitamin B12 ve folik asit eksikliği önemli bir halk sağlığı sorunudur.

Purpose: We aimed to evaluate articles in radiology journals indexed in the Science Citation Index or Science Citation Index Expanded in terms of statistical errors. By this means, we aim to contribute to the production of high quality scientific publications. Methods: In this study, a total of 157 articles published in 2016-2017 in 20 radiology journals were reviewed randomly. Selected articles were evaluated for statistical errors regarding P values and statistical tests, and for errors in terminology and other errors related to interpretation. In addition, in order to examine whether the error rates of the articles published in the radiology journals differed according to the impact factor, the statistical errors were compared according to the impact factors of the journals. Results: Of the 157 articles published in radiology journals, 10 had no statistical errors, while 147 had at least one statistical error. The most frequently encountered error was "errors in summarizing data" with a rate of 66%. This was followed by "incorrect representation of P values" with a rate of 42%. The least frequently encountered error was "statistical symbol errors" with a rate of 3%. There was no statistically significant difference according to impact factors. Conclusion: In conclusion, radiology journals, as do journals in different fields, include articles containing statistical errors. Even when the quality of the journal increases, there is no difference in these statistical error rates. In order to prevent statistical errors in manuscripts, there are responsibilities for both the researchers who conduct scientific studies and the editors who publish these studies in their journals. Researchers should have a basic statistical knowledge, and the editor must submit all manuscripts for a statistical review. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency is an important public health problem in the developing countries. It is well known that vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency has negative effects on cognitive functions and is associated with increased risk for dementia. This situation only doesn’t effect the hematological system, it also effects neurological system without hematological involvement. Vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency can be observed especially in the elderly people, and permanent neurological deficits secondary to this deficiency could be easily prevented by vitamin replacement.

- Abstract
Objective: To explore the possible relationship between vitamin D and coronavirus disease-2019 in an urban population known to have relatively low vitamin D levels., Methods: The retrospective study was conducted in Bursa, Turkey, and comprised data of 30 family health centers from March 1 to December 15, 2020, related to diagnosed inpatients of coronovairus disease-2019. The diagnosis was based on polymerase chain reaction test for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 infection. Vitamin D levels of these patients were obtained from previous records and compared with those without polymerase chain reaction positivity. Vitamin D levels of positive patients who survived were compared with those who died of coronavirus disease-2019. Data was analysed using SPSS 21., Results: Of the 2,105 patients whose data was retrieved, 212(10%) were positive for coronavirus disease-2019, while 1,893(90%) were negative. Among the positive patients, 89(42%) were men and 123(58%) were women. The overall median age was 45 years (Q1-Q3(Q1: first quartile, Q3: third quartile): 35-56 years). Vitamin D level was not significantly different between the positive and negative patients (p>0.05). Among the positive patients, 2(0.9%) patients did not have new admissions to the designated centers and their data was excluded, 206(97.2%) survived and 4(1.9%) died. There was no significant difference in vitamin D levels between those who survived and those who died (p>0.05)., Conclusions: There was no significant relationship found between vitamin D levels and coronavirus disease-2019 infection and related deaths.

- Abstract
Purpose: We aimed to evaluate articles in radiology journals indexed in the Science Citation Index or Science Citation Index Expanded in terms of statistical errors. By this means, we aim to contribute to the production of high quality scientific publications., Methods: In this study, a total of 157 articles published in 2016-2017 in 20 radiology journals were reviewed randomly. Selected articles were evaluated for statistical errors regarding P values and statistical tests, and for errors in terminology and other errors related to interpretation. In addition, in order to examine whether the error rates of the articles published in the radiology journals differed according to the impact factor, the statistical errors were compared according to the impact factors of the journals., Results: Of the 157 articles published in radiology journals, 10 had no statistical errors, while 147 had at least one statistical error. The most frequently encountered error was "errors in summarizing data" with a rate of 66%. This was followed by "incorrect representation of P values" with a rate of 42%. The least frequently encountered error was "statistical symbol errors" with a rate of 3%. There was no statistically significant difference according to impact factors., Conclusion: In conclusion, radiology journals, as do journals in different fields, include articles containing statistical errors.
