Objetivo: Evaluar cuantitativamente el calibre y la conicidad de los conos de gutapercha Mtwo (VDW, Múnich, Alemania). Materiales y métodos: Se seleccionaron al azar 50 conos de gutapercha marca Mtwo (VDW, Múnich, Alemania) entre 300, provenientes de 5 cajas de conos surtidos #25 .06, #30 .05, #35 .04, #40 .04 y #25 .07. Fueron descartados aquellos que visualmente tenían algún defecto. Los elegidos se separaron en grupos de 10, según el número. Se midió cada cono en el vértice y a 1 mm, 2 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm y 5 mm, con un espesímetro centesimal modelo 7301 (Mitutoyo, Japón). Se realizaron 300 determinaciones, que fueron efectuadas por dos operadores. Cuando hubo diferencias, se repitieron las mediciones hasta hallar coincidencia. Los datos fueron registrados en una planilla de Excel (Microsoft Corporation, Estados Unidos) diseñada al efecto. El análisis estadístico se llevó a cabo con prueba de hipótesis de dos colas, contrastando la media con el valor teórico. Resultados: Se hallaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas para los conos #25 .06 en la determinación a 2 mm. En cuanto al resto de las mediciones, no hubo diferencias significativas. Conclusión: De acuerdo a los resultados obtenidos sobre la muestra analizada, en general los conos de gutapercha Mtwo respetan las especificaciones ISO de fabricación. Fil: Hilú, Rodolfo. Notochthamalus scabrosus (Darwin 1854) is commonly attached to littoral rocks and shells, often associated with Notobalanus flosculus (Darwin 1854), and sometimes with Chthamalus cirratus (Darwin 1851). Notochthamalus scabrosus was previously reported from Peru to Tierra del Fuego and Islas Malvinas / Falkland Islands by Darwin (1851). Moreover, the review of South American barnacle distribution by Young (1995) suggested that the temperate zone of the Southwestern Atlantic, occurring between 35ºS and the southern tip of South America (56ºS), had a barnacle fauna similar to that of the Southeastern Pacific (coasts of Chile and Peru), with N. scabrosus occurring at both zones. Particularly in the Beagle Channel, N. scabrous is the dominant species in the upper zone of the rocky intertidal. The Beagle Channel is located at the southernmost tip of South America (ca. 55º S; 68º W) and is an ancient glacial valley of about 210 km length and 5 km width, with different basins. The Beagle Channel has fjord estuarine features with salinities lower than the surrounding oceanic water masses due to the discharge of glaciers and rivers (Balestrini et al. 1998; Isla et al. 1999). One of these subsystems is the estuarine complex of Lago Roca-Bahía Lapataia, a palaeo-fjord currently constituted by a lake discharging freshwater to the channel via the Ovando River (Isla et al. 1999; Fig. 1). Zaixso et al. (1978) described the rocky intertidal flora and fauna from 11 localities at the Beagle Channel. N. scabrosus was reported by the authors from three localities: Bahía Ensenada (Ensenada Zaratiegui) (54º 50? S; 68º 28 W), Punta Jones (54º 49? S; 68º 13 W) and Bahía Ushuaia (54º 49? S; 68º 19 W). With regard to Bahía Lapataia, Zaixso et al. (1978) mentioned that this species was absent there, likely as a consequence of the low salinity characterizing the zone. Authors reported the presence of Elminius kingii (Gray 1831) as the only barnacle species for this location. In the present study we report for the first time the presence of N. scabrosus in the upper zone of the rocky intertidal of the western coast of Bahía Lapataia (54º 51.54? S, 68º 33.87? W), Tierra del Fuego (Fig. 1). Specimens of N. scabrosus were found along with Elminius kingii (Fig. 2). On September 25th, 2008 photographs and samples of both species were taken. The samples were collected for accurate identification after dissection. Especially during spring and summer, Ensenada Zaratiegui and Bahía Lapataia have very variable and lower salinity than other sites of the Beagle Channel, which in turn are less influenced by freshwater discharges (Table 1). N. scabrous is clearly a euryhaline species since specimens can tolerate a range of salinities of 15 31 ups. Although there are no specific studies on salinity tolerance of this species, the genus Chthamalus is known to be euryhaline (e.g. Crisp & Costlow 1963, López & González 2003, Farrapeira 2008). Roughgarden et al. (1988) and Alexander & Roughgarden (1996) have suggested that the ecology of a rocky intertidal community at a site would be governed by adult-adult interactions within the site, or by limitations to the supply of larvae reaching the site, the latter being determined by the regional pattern of circulation and physical oceanography in the coastal waters. These characteristics would explain the variation of timing of recruitment at the coast and the likely reason that it occurs in discrete pulses. We propose that the establishment of N. scabrosus in Bahía Lapataia could be a consequence of local hydrological events, namely coastal currents, wind direction and intensity and availability of larvae in the plankton rather than by the low saline waters characterizing the zone, and these events would explain the discontinuous scheme of distribution of N. scabrosus along the coast of the Beagle Channel. This channel is a particular environment because of its fjord features and its semi-closed condition (Antezana 1999). For example, the freshwater input may change the environmental conditions at a geographical micro-scale. In some western coves the ice input from glaciers may produce the typical coastal disturbance so that the intertidal community may be locally impoverished or absent (c.f. Mutschke & Gorny 1999; Barnes 2005). Hence, the presence of certain species at different sites with both different freshwater input and coastal orientation and therefore differentially affected by winds and currents may be indicators of specific hydrological processes acting on the community structure and/or diversity. En la actualidad, y como consecuencia de la gran demanda por parte de la industria, la sobreexplotación ya no es sostenible para muchas especies. Muchas de ellas, además, se enfrentan a otros riesgos de origen antrópico y tampoco pueden escapar a las modificaciones que produce el cambio climático. Hedeoma multiflora es una especie aromática y medicinal que se encuentra en riesgo. Es importante promover su conservación y la extracción sustentable, como así también, mantener el desarrollo cultural y socioeconómico regional de sus recolectores. La protección de especies puede hacerse en su ambiente o fuera de él. En este último caso, una estrategia muy utilizada para especies en riesgo es el cultivo de tejidos in vitro, y su incorporación en un banco de germoplasma. Pero también es necesario determinar los motivos por los cuales se ve afectada en su supervivencia y en su distribución geográfica, para tomar medidas que apoyen programas de conservación. En conjunto, estas acciones pueden contribuir a evitar la degradación de este valioso recurso natural. The collection of aromatic and medicinal plants (PAM) has been carried out by different communities for a long time, but currently, due to the high demand from the industry, the overexplotation is no longer sustainable for many species. Many of them also face other risks of anthropic origin and cannot escape the modifications produced by climate change. Hedeoma multiflora is an aromatic and medicinal species that is at risk. It is important to promote their conservation and sustainable extraction, as well as to maintain the regional cultural and socioeconomic development of their collectors. The protection of species can be done in their environment or outside of it. In the latter case, a widely used strategy for species at risk is in vitro tissue culture, and its incorporation into a germplasm bank. But it is also necessary to determine the reasons why its survival and geographic distribution are affected, in order to take measures that support conservation programs. Together, these actions can help prevent the degradation of this valuable natural resource.

Reproduction is a highly expensive process that during gonadal development requires an important supply of nutrients. The allocation of energy can vary throughout the reproductive cycle, between sexes and development modes. During research cruise aboard the RV Puerto Deseado in April 2016, we collected fifteen species of sea stars from the southernmost region of Argentina. The main purposes of the present study were threefold: first, to revise and report novel information on the reproductive strategies and energetic density (ED) of body components from the asteroids of the southwestern Atlantic Ocean including Burdwood Bank/ MPA Namuncurá; second, to compare the ED of these body components across species with contrasting reproductive strategies; third, to provide a tool to estimate the ED from dry mass of organs of the sea star species examined. Ovaries of Diplopteraster verrucosus (a brooder with a nidamental chamber) revealed a significantly greater ED than did the testes (29.81 ± 1.38 and 17.76 ± 1.59, respectively). In Glabraster antarctica (a broadcaster with yolky eggs and facultative planktotrophic larvae), the gonads had EDs of 25.78 ± 3.16 and 19.21 ± 0.52 (females and males, respectively). While in Peribolaster folliculatus (a broadcaster with eggs with low yolk content and inferred planktotrophic larvae) there was no significant difference in the ED values between sexes (females: 22.79 ± 1.10 and males: 20.46 ± 1.05). For the pyloric caeca, ED values did not reveal any difference between sexes, although in P. folliculatus, the ED was significantly higher than that for D. verrucosus and G. antarctica (25.90 ± 1.00, 23.03 ± 0.34, and 22.66 ± 0.65, respectively). The body wall had higher ED values in D. verrucosus and P. folliculatus than that for all the sea star species analyzed (46.48 ± 1.63, 51.17 ± 1.34, respectively). Higher ED values in the ovaries could be related to the nutrition of offspring, while differences found in the body wall may reflect the skeletal structure of this body component. This study investigated metal accumulation and oxidative effects in mantle, gill and digestive gland of the ribbed mussel Aulacomya atra from the Argentinean North Patagonian coastline. Mussels were transplanted over an 18-month period from a site with low anthropogenic impact to a harbor site with higher seawater concentration of aluminum, chromium, copper, manganese, nickel and zinc. Total trace metal concentration in seawater did not change throughout the 18-month transplant in either site. A. atra bioaccumulated metals in digestive gland, gills and mantle at different levels. Digestive gland had the highest concentration of metals, especially towards the end of the transplant experiment in the harbor area. Mussels transplanted to the harbor site experienced an upregulation in their antioxidant system, which likely explains the lack of oxidative damage to lipids despite higher metal accumulation. These results demonstrate that A. atra selectively accumulates metals from the water column and their prooxidant effects depend on the tissue antioxidant defenses and the exposure time. Communities of the rocky mid-intertidal zone of the South-western Atlantic are uniform in appearance, dominated by dense monocultures of small-size mussels (Brachidontes rodriguezii and Perumytilus purpuratus). To explain this, two hypotheses have been advanced in the literature: environmental harshness due to high potential evaporation and historical contingency after the Last Glacial Maximum. In this study of Uruguayan and Argentine shores, we address the implications and predictions of these two hypotheses from a biogeographic perspective by studying the regional distribution and composition of mid-intertidal mussels. We conducted an extensive latitudinal sampling survey (21 locations, 34–54°S), along with a compilation of available information on mussel bed composition and mussel predators present along the coastline. Then we constructed latitudinal profiles of ecologically significant environmental variables with specific emphasis on potential evaporation, a proxy for desiccation stress. The results show that mussel beds are composed of two species of small mussels, which coexist over a biogeographic transition zone (40–42°S) related to sea surface water temperature. The distribution of mussels along the coastline studied is not consistent with the environmental harshness hypothesis. In addition, in the Central Patagonian zone (44–50°S), two invertebrate predators also inhabit the intertidal rocky shores. However, these localities showed higher environmental harshness (potential evaporation rate) than non-Patagonian localities. We suggest that further attention should be given to historical contingency in order to advance towards a hypothesis consistent with current knowledge on the post-glacial biogeographic history of the South-western Atlantic. DEET and IR3535 are insect repellents present worldwide in commercial products; their efficacy has been mainly evaluated in mosquitoes. This study compares the toxicological effects and the behavioral responses induced by both repellents on the blood-sucking bug Triatoma infestans Klug (Hemiptera: Reduviidae), one of the main vectors of Chagas disease. When applied topically, the Median Lethal Dose (72 h) for DEET was 220.8 μg/insect. Using IR3535, topical application of 500 μg/insect killed no nymphs. The minimum concentration that produced repellency was the same for both compounds: 1,15 μg/cm2. The effect of a mixture DEET:IR3535 1:1 was similar to that of their pure components. Flushing out was assessed in a chamber with a shelter containing groups of ten nymphs. The repellents were aerosolized on the shelter and the number of insects leaving it was recorded for 60 min. During that time, 0.006 g/m3 of the positive control tetramethrin flushed out 76.7% of the nymphs, while 1.76 g/m3 of DEET or IR3535 flushed out 30 and 0%, respectively. The concentrations required for both compounds to produce toxicity or flushing out are too high to have any practical applications. However, they showed a promising repellency. El orden Amphipoda es uno de los grupos de crustáceos más diversos y abundantes. Pertenecen a la subclase Malacostraca, de la cual también forman parte entre otros, los órdenes Decapoda (cangrejos, langostinos, camarones), Euphausiacea (krill) y Stomatopoda. Los malacostracos se caracterizan por poseer ocho segmentos en el tórax (o pereion) y seis en el abdomen (o pleon), a excepción del orden Leptostraca que posee siete en el pleon. Junto a los biodiversos órdenes Isopoda, Tanaidacea, Cumacea y Mysida (Figura 1), y otros taxones con unas pocas especies como Lophogastrida, Mictacea, Spelaeogriphacea y Thermosbaenacea, constituyen el superorden Peracarida (Bowman y Abele, 1982; Martin y Davis, 2001). El origen de los anfípodos se remonta al Eoceno superior (Coleman y Myers, 2000). Las relaciones filogenéticas entre los distintos órdenes de peracáridos es un tema aún en discusión, aunque la mayoría de los estudios postulan que los anfípodos son el grupo hermano de los isópodos. Los peracáridos presentan el primer segmento torácico siempre fusionado al céfalon, las mandíbulas llevan un proceso accesorio incisivo y articulado denominado lacinia mobilis, las hembras adultas poseen oostegitos que forman una cámara incubadora, y carecen de estadios larvales libres. Las características diagnósticas del orden Amphipoda son: no poseen caparazón; el cuerpo por lo general es comprimido; los ojos, cuando presentes, son sésiles; el pereion, usualmente consta de 7 segmentos y lleva patas unirramosas (algunas con branquias); en el pleon, de 6 segmentos, los apéndices 1 a 3 (pleópodos) son comúnmente birramosos y poseen ramas multiarticuladas, mientras que los apéndices 4 a 6 (urópodos) son por lo general birramosos y las ramas están formadas por sólo uno o dos artículos; el telson es libre (Kaestner, 1970; Barnard y Karaman, 1991; Bellan-Santini, 1999). Los equinodermos (ekhinos, erizo; derma, piel) comprenden un grupo exitoso de organismos exclusivamente marinos conocidos vulgarmente como estrellas de mar, ofiuras, erizos de mar, pepinos de mar y lirios de mar. Estos presentan, en su gran mayoría, hábitos bentónicos y se distribuyen desde ambientes intermareales hasta fondos profundos y en diferentes latitudes. Presentan características anatómicas únicas entre los invertebrados, entre ellas podemos citar una simetría radial pentámera secundaria, puesto que en muchas especies sus larvas poseen simetría bilateral. Los equinodermos carecen de una cabeza definida, por lo tanto se identifica en general una zona oral, donde se halla ubicada la boca y una zona opuesta denominada aboral que suele estar en contacto con el sustrato. Gametogenesis and temporal variation in energy allocation to different organs were analyzed in Aulacomya atra from the Beagle Channel (Tierra del Fuego, Argentina). Our results show that A. atra presents an extended spawning period from late winter to spring when the lowest value of mantle-gonad index (MGI) and maximum number of spawned individuals were observed. The MGI in mature males increased as the energy density of the mantle-gonad (EDMG) decreased, indicating an increase in mass of lower energy values. In contrast, the MGI in mature females increased as EDMG increased, indicating an increase in mass of higher energy values. Consequently, males and females reached a similar energy content of the mantle-gonad (ECMG) by means of different strategies: males have gonads of larger size but with lower energy by unit of mass than females. Besides, we observed a decrease in the digestive gland index (DGI) in concordance with an increase in the MGI of mature individuals, and a trend towards the depletion of ED and EC in the digestive gland during gonadal maturation. Our results evidence the role of the digestive gland as an energy reservoir and a different energy allocation strategy between sexes during gonadal maturation. Se analizó la gametogénesis y la variación temporal en la asignación de energía a diferentes órganos de Aulacomya atra del Canal Beagle (Tierra del Fuego). El periodo de desove de A. atra se extendió desde el final del invierno hasta la primavera, cuando el MGI (Índice gónada-manto) resultó mínimo y el número de individuos desovados, máximo. En los machos maduros el incremento del MGI coincidió con un descenso en la densidad energética del manto-gónada (EDMG), lo que está relacionado con un aumento de masa con menor energía. En hembras maduras el incremento de MGI se relaciona con un aumento de masa con valores más altos de energía, que determina el aumento de la EDMG. Durante la maduración gonadal existen diferentes estrategias de asignación de energía en ambos sexos, aunque se alcanza similar contenido de energía en el manto-gónada; los machos mantienen gónadas más grandes, pero con menos energía por unidad de masa que las hembras. Además, en los individuos maduros desciende el valor del índice de la glándula digestiva (DGI), incrementa el MGI, y tiende a la depleción de la ED y del contenido energético, sugiriendo que este órgano actuaría como reservorio de energía. The early ontogenetic stages of the sub-Antarctic king crab Lithodes santolla were analyzed for the presence and activities of a set of important digestive enzymes. The eggs and non-feeding larvae (zoea I-III, megalopa) showed high activities of esterases, phosphatases, and exopeptidases indicating the enzymatic ability to utilize endogeneous yolk reserves. SDS-PAGE showed a continuous decrease of proteins or proteids in the range of 59-81 kDa during ontogenetic development from the eggs through the zoeal stages to the first juvenile crab stage, CI. This reduction reflects the degradation of storage compounds during lecithotrophic larval development. Activities of the endopeptidases, trypsin and chymotrypsin, were low in eggs and larvae but increased significantly in the first juvenile crab stage. These enzymes typically facilitate the first steps of proteolysis in the extra-cellular spaces of the midgut gland and in the stomach. Their scarcity indicates that the larvae of L. santolla are physiologically not prepared to digest external food. This ability seems to appear first in the CI stage. Extracts of juvenile midgut glands and the gastric fluids of adults showed high activities of a variety of digestive enzymes including phosphatases, carbohydrases, as well as endo- and exopeptidases. High activities of digestive enzymes in adults may compensate for scarce food supply and rate-limiting low temperatures in the predominantly sub-Antarctic habitats of L. santolla. During the larval development of the subantarctic king crab, Lithodes santolla, and stone crab, Paralomis granulosa, we compared changes in the carbon, fatty acid and protein contents of larvae reared under constant conditions from hatching to metamorphosis, either in presence or absence of food (Artemia spp. nauplii). In both species the feeding condition had no influence on any of the chemical parameters studied, indicating a fully lecithotrophic (i.e. non-feeding) mode of development from hatching of the first zoea to metamorphosis of the late megalopa. Dry mass and carbon contents at hatching were similar in the larvae of both species, but L. santolla contained initially higher total amounts of fatty acids and protein than P. granulosa. Both species utilized considerable portions of their total fatty acid pool which decreased logarithmically throughout the time of development. At metamorphosis, it was almost exhausted in P. granulosa, while L. santolla had consumed only about 60%. Protein utilization, in contrast, was higher in L. santolla (40%) than in P. granulosa (20%). Triacylglycerol was the principal storage lipid in both species, accounting initially for about 75% of the lipid fraction; it was strongly utilized during larval development. Phospholipid constituted the second largest lipid class; it also decreased in P. granulosa, but to a lesser extent in L. santolla. The major fatty acids of both species were 18:1(n - 9), 20:5(n - 3) and 16:0 as well as, in lower proportions, 18:1(n - 7), 22:6(n - 3), 16:1(n - 7) and 18:0. Monounsaturated fatty acids represented the dominant group in L. santolla, whereas P. granulosa contained similar amounts of mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids. In L. santolla, monounsaturated fatty acids, especially 16:1(n - 7), were preferentially utilized as compared to polyunsaturates. Due to a particularly strong lipid utilization in P. granulosa, all individual fatty acids were largely depleted at metamorphosis, showing similar extents of consumption.
