This document is intended to present the business case of a research project, more precisely of the Sub-project "The doubly-fed induction generator: Modeling and control of non-linearities”. Non-linearity affects the operation of a real doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) and as such has to be addressed by models. In two sentences, the Scope of this Sub-project is (1) to determine the extent to which the available methods carry over to the non linear setting, and (2) to investigate different methods, including new ones. The Plan of this Sub-project includes three Stages which may be executed in sequence and may be interleaved by gates (ISO 21502:2020, FIGURE 4). Stage 1: update the literature database; Stage 2: classify articles and book chapters by the methods they propose and by the problems they solve or address; Stage 3: determine the DFIG model which accounts for most of the physical processes in the machine and those properties of the model which are mathematically tractable; if necessary, investigate new methods and suggest the corresponding control algorithms. The Project’s scope falls into the realm of mathematical and physical Methods and Models of complex systems. The interplay between different methods and models will be emphasised during Stage 2. Complexity of the system under investigation, represented by the interaction of different physical processes in the electrical network and in magnetic materials, will be addressed during Stage 3. Risk carried by each Stage can be identified and quantified, the main Risk coming from the inability of answering a research question. Strategies exist, which can mitigate such Risk: they rely on continuous comparison of known different solutions to previously addressed problems. Such comparison characterises the investigation of mathematical models of physical systems: it allows consistency of results to be verified at each stage and suggests a solution by analogy., a.k.a. La liquefazione è un fenomeno complesso che potrebbe causare numerosi danni agli edifici e alle infrastrutture. È generalmente identificato come la perdita di resistenza e rigidità di un terreno a causa di scosse sismiche o altri carichi dinamici. Comprendere appieno il suo meccanismo rimane una delle sfide dell’ingegneria geotecnica legata ai terremoti, poiché i geomateriali non mostrano reazioni identiche in condizioni sismiche simili. Dal terremoto di Niigata del 1964, molti ricercatori hanno mostrato interesse per questo campo e si sono impegnati per studiare questo fenomeno. Questa tesi di dottorato si concentra sull'analisi dei terreni liquefacibili partendo da un metodo semplificato per poi esplorare i metodi avanzati, attraverso lo studio di due casi reali, che coinvolgono diverse strutture geotecniche. L'obiettivo è quello di fornire un metodo completo di analisi nel campo della liquefazione, concentrandosi soprattutto su apparecchiature di laboratorio che meglio simulino il comportamento dinamico del terreno. Per ottenere questo risultato, il lavoro è stato sviluppato in più fasi focalizzate principalmente sullo studio sperimentale, teorico e numerico; questo percorso rappresenta il tipico e peculiare approccio ingegneristico per l'analisi di un fenomeno reale. Le prove in situ sono considerate come punto di partenza nella valutazione della liquefazione, poiché forniscono il Fattore di Sicurezza del terreno in esame, necessario per ulteriori analisi. Le apparecchiature di laboratorio consentono di testare il materiale per valutare la sua suscettibilità alla liquefazione, ma soprattutto per definire una curva affidabile da utilizzare nella calibrazione della modellazione costitutiva. A questo scopo sono state eseguite diverse prove triassiali cicliche, a carico controllato e a deformazione controllata, al fine di definire una procedura di prova per ottenere risultati di alta qualità. It is generally identified as the loose of strength and stiffness of a soil by earthquake shaking or other dynamic loading. Fully understanding its mechanism remains one of the challenges of earthquake-related geotechnical engineering, as geomaterials do not exhibit identical reactions under similar seismic conditions. From Niigata earthquake in 1964, many researchers have shown interest in this field and have worked to study this phenomenon. This PhD thesis is focus on analysis of liquefiable soils starting from a simplified method and then exploring the advanced methods, by means of study of two real cases, which involve different geotechnical structure. The objective is to provide a full method of analysis in liquefaction field, focusing most of all on laboratory equipment which better simulate the dynamic behaviour of the soil. For getting this result, the work has been developed in more phasis focused mostly on experimental, theoretical and numerical study; this path represents the typical and peculiar engineering approach for analysing a real phenomenon. In situ tests are considered as a starting point in liquefaction assessment, since they provide the Factor of Safety of soil under investigation, necessary for further analysis. Laboratory equipment allow to test the material in order to evaluate its susceptibility to liquefaction, but most of all to define reliable curve to be used in constitutive modelling calibration. For this purpose, several cyclic triaxial test have been performed, load-controlled and strain-controlled, in order to define a testing procedure to obtain high quality results. A final analysis by means of numerical modelling based on real test calibration, allows to make prediction not only about susceptibility but also about the actual effects of liquefaction on structure. Questo progetto di ricerca, ha affrontato una vasta gamma di aspetti relativi ai fenomeni di crollo roccioso. L'indagine ha compreso l'analisi di casi di studio reali con l'obiettivo di comprendere la distribuzione dei frammenti in relazione al volume e alla topografia. Inoltre, sono state condotte simulazioni numeriche allo scopo di valutare l'impatto della frammentazione sull'analisi della pericolosità. Allo stesso tempo, sono stati condotti esperimenti in situ e di laboratorio al fine di approfondire la comprensione delle dinamiche di frammentazione. Questo approccio multidisciplinare ha fornito intuizioni sul comportamento dei crolli rocciosi, la frammentazione e le relative implicazioni per la valutazione della pericolosità e la gestione del rischio in regioni montuose. In particolare, la tesi si è concentrata su quattro obiettivi principali: L'analisi di casi di studio di crolli rocciosi, con un focus specifico sull'esame delle distribuzioni delle dimensioni dei blocchi nel deposito finale dei frammenti dei crolli. Questo approccio ha consentito di proporre indicatori che forniscono informazioni dettagliate sulle dinamiche di frammentazione durante gli eventi di crollo. Nello specifico, nel Capitolo 1 sono stati descritti tre indicatori chiave correlati alla frammentazione nei crolli rocciosi: la distanza percorsa rispetto alle dimensioni dei frammenti, la relazione di scala di potenza tra il deposito e le dimensioni dei frammenti, l'angolo di copertura e la dispersione laterale. Questi indicatori forniscono importanti informazioni sulla presenza di frammentazione dinamica durante gli eventi di crollo, permettendo di distinguere tra le caratteristiche del deposito primario e quelle dei blocchi/frammenti, mentre evidenziano la mobilità e il consumo di energia associati alla frammentazione. La quantificazione e la valutazione della frammentazione nelle dinamiche e nella pericolosità dei crolli rocciosi attraverso una modellazione dettagliata e l'analisi di, This research project, titled "Rockfall Volume Distribution, Fragmentation, and Frequency in the Context of Climate Change," aimed to explore various aspects of rockfall phenomena. The investigation included the analysis of real case studies to understand fragment distribution in relation to volume and topography, numerical simulations to assess the impact of fragmentation on hazard analysis, and in-situ and laboratory experiments to enhance the understanding of fragmentation dynamics. This multidisciplinary approach sought to provide some insights into how rockfalls behave, how fragmentation occurs, and the implications for hazard assessment and risk management in mountainous regions. Specifically, the thesis attempted to focus on four main objectives: 1. The analysis of real case studies of rockfalls, with a specific focus on examining the distributions of block sizes in the final deposit of rockfall fragments. This approach aimed to propose some indicators that could provide information about the dynamics of fragmentation during rockfall events. 2. The quantification and evaluation of fragmentation in rockfall dynamics and hazard assessment through detailed modeling and analysis of real case studies. This approach aimed to examine how fragmentation processes influence rockfall hazard and the importance of explicitly modeling fragmentation for accurate hazard assessment. 3. The analysis of the fragmentation process through experiments conducted at different scales (full-scale and laboratory-scale) to investigate behaviors observed in real case studies, focusing on dispersion, deposition, and mobility of rockfalls, as well as the effects of discontinuities. Despite the complexities and challenges in this area of study, the analysis of fragmentation in rockfalls remains of significant importance for various reasons. Il Prodotto qui descritto risulta dalla catalogazione e dalla classificazione di documenti riguardanti l’Affare a cui il Superfondo è intitolato. Le Attività che hanno portato al Prodotto iniziarono il 2019-0704 con l’attivazione della piattaforma ARCHIUI e si svolsero in prevalenza nel quadriennio dal 2020 al 2023. Il Prodotto ha due componenti: (1) il Titolario e (2) la rappresentazione di suoi contenuti riordinata cronologicamente e per Attore, rappresentazione della quale si presenta solo un esempio.

In seguito ad interventi di riparazione di una Vasca Orna-mentale si rende necessaria la posa di un tipo di piastrella diverso da quello originario. Questa Relazione Tecnica comprende: 1 - la motivazione; 2 - la definizione degli obiettivi; 3 - il disegno dell’esperimento, limitato alla colorimetria comparativa delle piastrelle rispettivamente in opera e da posare; 4 - i metodi e gli strumenti, fra i quali un metodo radiometrico indiretto definito ed applicato in un precedente Progetto di illuminotecnica; 5 - la descrizione dei materiali esaminati; 6 - la loro colorimetria comparativa basata sulle coordinate CIELab; 7 - la discussione e la conclusione. In quest'ultimo § i due tipi di piastrella, se asciutti, vengono dichiarati "praticamente indistinguibili" ; le differenze cromatiche fra piastrelle bagnate, come espresse da indicatori quantitativi calcolati a partire dalle su dette coordinate CIELab, vengono dichiarate rilevanti. Tuttavia le previste disuniformità di illuminazione della scena portano a dichiarare come difficilmente percettibili le differenze cromatiche fra i due tipi di piastrella, almeno alla distanza di osservazione e sotto l’angolo di vista scelti per l’esperimento.

Alpine and prealpine karst aquifers represent a considerable water reserve due to the extension of the carbonate massifs. These aquifers are particularly vulnerable and require careful monitoring and protection activities. The Northern Grigna massif (Western Orobic Prealps, Lombardy Region) represents one of the most significant karst areas in Northern Central Alps of Italy, characterised by a deep karst system and a high density of cave entrances. The Fiumelatte Cave and the Fonte Uga spring represent the main identified outflows of the Northern Grigna groundwater karstic system. Past tracer testing established the connection between the upper karst massif and the Fiumelatte Cave and suggested a possible link between the Esino river and the two springs. The characterization of the Grigna karst aquifer by an annual monitoring of the main springs and the interpretation of hydrochemical and hydrological data is the main topic of this paper. The continuous monitoring of water temperature, discharge, electrical conductivity and turbidity at Fiumelatte and Fonte Uga springs allowed to define a conceptual model of these connected discharge points within the karst system. Two multiple tracer tests with fluorescent dyes injected along the Esino river and deep into two caves enabled to better investigate the dynamics of the groundwater flow system and of the springs. The tests revealed the coexistence of different drainage systems within the karst massif and confirmed the relationship between Fiumelatte and Fonte Uga springs. The first one, a temporary spring which activates only after intense rainfall events or during the snowmelt period, represents the overflow system of the second one, which is a perennial spring. An updated model of the Grigna karst system is presented, with a particular focus on the hydrogeochemical characteristics of the main springs and on the flow network developed in the peculiar geological and structural setting of this karstic massif.

The paper focuses on the geomorphological processes and potential geo-hazards affecting the cultural heritage rock-cut sites of AlUla region. Its best-known site is Hegra, with more than 110 monumental tombs with elaborated façades carved directly into the sandstone rock. In addition, AlUla hosts a number of fascinating historical and archaeological sites such as its Old Town, surrounded by an ancient oasis, and Dadan, the capital of the Dadan and Lihyan kingdoms. The study is mainly aimed at investigating the local rock material, evaluating characteristics of rock masses, understanding rock degradation processes and characterizing the potential impact of slope instabilities on the conservation of cultural heritage.

This works addresses the processing of thermo-hydraulic data collected by suitable instruments at a Plant made of seepage wells and located in a residential area in Lombardy, a Region of Italy. Water from meteorological events ('rain water') which falls on a building and on the surrounding impervious areas has to be disposed of separately from wastewater e.g., by seepage well plants. The latter need proper management and maintenance plans. Herewith, a research and development Project is outlined, which was started in 2017 with the aim of monitoring and characterising the Plant. The sequence of sub-Projects has included the collection of thermo-hydraulic data. Methods from the qualitative theory of dynamical, non-autonomous systems have made the processing of such data possible and triggered Plant characterisation. A product from the latter activity consists of a mathematical model of thermo-hydraulic processes in the Plant and of a method to estimate the parameters of such model, presented herewith for the first time.

Questa tesi si occupa dello studio della tecnica del permeation grouting e dell'effetto delle iniezioni sulle caratteristiche meccaniche del terreno trattato. Questa tecnica viene utilizzata sia per migliorare le caratteristiche di resistenza e rigidità del terreno, sia per ridurne la permeabilità, e consiste nell'iniezione di miscele consolidanti all'interno del terreno, che permeano i vuoti presenti tra le particelle dello scheletro solido. Le iniezioni di permeazione stuccatura vengono effettuate tramite un tubo valvolato, detto anche tubo a manchéttes (TAM), ogni valvola dei tubi di iniezione viene isolata e iniettata mediante un doppio packer; possono essere utilizzate miscele consolidanti differenti a seconda della granulometria, porosità e permeabilità del terreno. Gli obiettivi di questa tesi sono: • lo studio in laboratorio della permeazione di miscele consolidanti nel terreno, con caratteristiche controllate del campione di terreno, e le caratteristiche meccaniche sviluppate dopo il trattamento, • la realizzazione una macchina che permetta di effettuare iniezioni 3D in laboratorio, e confinare il terreno da iniettare rendendolo simile al terreno presente in situ Per ottenere questi risultati sono state effettuate due macro tipologie di prove sperimentali: • iniezioni in colonna (iniezioni 1D), • iniezioni in macchinari di nuova concezione (iniezioni 3D) L'iniezione in colonna è un test standard che permette di valutare l’iniettabilità di una particolare miscela all'interno di un particolare mezzo granulare; dopo la maturazione del terreno iniettato in colonna, è possibile ottenere provini da sottoporre a prove meccaniche. Le iniezioni effettuate con macchinari di nuova concezione consentono di superare il limite delle iniezioni in colonna, rappresentato dall'avanzamento 1D della miscela consolidante nel terreno. Queste iniezioni sono svolte in un campione tridimensionale, utilizzando tubi a manchette, turbomescolatore e iniettore, come utilizzati i, This thesis deals with the study of permeation grouting technique and the effect of injections on the mechanical characteristics of the ground treated. This technique is used either to improve the resistance and stiffness characteristics of the soil, or to reduce its permeability, and it consists in the injection of consolidating mixtures inside the ground, which permeate the voids present between the particles of the solid skeleton. Permeation grouting injections are carried out through a valved tube, also named tube a manchéttes (TAM), each valve of injection pipes is isolated and injected using a double packer; different consolidating mixtures can be used according to the granulometry, porosity and permeability of the soil. The goals of this thesis are: • to studying in the laboratory permeation of consolidating mixtures into the soil, with controlled characteristics of soil sample, and the mechanical characteristic developed after the treatment, • to create a machine that allows you to carry out 3D injections in the laboratory, and confine the soil to be injected making it as similar to the soil present in situ For getting this results two macro types of experimental tests were carried out: • column injections (1D injections), • injections in newly developed machineries (3D injections) Column injection is standard test that allows to evaluate the groutability of a particular mixture within a particular granular medium; after the maturation of the injected soil in the column, it is possible to obtain specimens to be subjected to mechanical tests. Injections carried out with newly machineries allow to overcome the limit of the injections in the column, represented by the 1D advancement of the consolidating mixture in the ground. Il codice di calcolo, compreso nell'ambito del Progetto di Tesi, è il prodotto inteso per la didattica dei problemi inversi che si incontrano nelle Scienze dell'Ambiente e nella Geofisica. Il processo fisico è il trasporto del calore in un intervallo ed in condizioni stazionarie. Il modello si applica anche al moto di filtrazione stazionaria di un fluido. I dati sono la temperatura (altrimenti chiamata "potenziale") ed il termine di sorgente. Incognita è la conducibilità. Ammessa l'esistenza, si prendono in esame alcune condizioni in conseguenza delle quali la conducibilità è unica. La Tesi tratta dapprima il problema inverso nel continuo e ricava, per ogni condizione di unicità, la corrispondente stima di stabilità nello spazio funzionale appropriato. (La "stabilità" in Analisi Funzionale ha come corrispettivo la "sensibilità" in Statistica.) Tutti i risultati vengono trasposti nel discreto e tradotti in codice di calcolo, scritto in linguaggio c in ambiente X-windows X11 R4 sotto sistema operativo IBM AIX 3.2.5 su macchina IBM RS/6000 53h. Gli esempi illustrati dalla Guida sono Esempio2, ossia identificazione di conducibilità che si sa essere stazionaria in un punto, Esempio3, ossia identificazione da conducibilità assegnata in un punto, Esempio4, ossia identificazione di conducibilità "auto-identificabile". Testo e fotografie delle schermate compresi nella Guida permettono all'Utente di eseguire le istruzioni e verificarne i risultati. La caratteristica saliente dell'algoritmo e del codice è il calcolo numerico delle costanti che compaiono nelle stime di stabilità. Le costanti desunte in astratto (dall'equazione del difetto) possono così venire confrontate con quelle calcolate per lo specifico esempio. Questa funzione aggiunge valore al prodotto ed accresce il successo a vita intera del Progetto.

The Article addresses an initial-boundary value seepage problem described by a generalised Darcy law. Existence of a solution is proved. Uniqueness, instead, remains an open issue.

The most intuitive example of an orbit (Section 1) is Carnot's cycle represented on the ${p, V}$ plane: it is a path formed by time-ordered ${p, V}$ pairs. Since the \underline{model} of the Carnot engine is known, then the orbit is a \underline{model-driven} result. Examples provided herewith are either model-driven or \underline{data-driven}. The latter are met whenever no model is available of the process which produces the data. Section 2 deals with application to single-cell mRNA sequencing: data have been heuristically represented by many Authors on a phase plane in order to display the dynamics of cell differentiation; the author's contribution consisted of synthesising a dynamical system which could explain the process, thus providing a model-driven application. Section 3 describes an application to groundwater hydraulics: sequences of water column data collected by a hydrometer network are put into orbit; the response of two seepage wells to a rainstorm can be compared. Applications to Public Health include the display of data from the SARS-CoV-2-caused disease (Subsection 4.1) and the dynamics of drinking water contaminants (Subsection 4.2). Finally, an application to Economics (Section 5): normalised balance of payments data from Italy and Germany are compared. In conclusion (Section 6), putting experimental data into orbit may add further insight and suggest a model of the underlying process. However, not all models are systems of just two ordinary differential equations: problems posed by higher dimensional systems are outlined.

The phenomenon of fluorescence is ubiquitous and as such has attracted Scientists' attention for centuries. The challenge is to describe fluorescence as observed in different materials under different conditions by mathematical models having some features in common. Section ``Fluorescence conversion models: Transform kernels or scaling constants ?'' addresses bulk properties of the fluorescent medium and is mainly \underline{literature-driven}: some Articles are quoted in order of appearance, the focus being on whether the fluorescent quantum efficiency turns out to depend or not on the wavelength of excitation. Section ``Approximate propagators in scalar optics'' is mainly \underline{model-driven} and summarises mathematical methods and models in wave propagation which are limited to scalar waves and are ordered by complexity. The relation of said models to radiative transfer theory need not be immediate and as such is a matter of ongoing investigation.
