This article presents a systematic review of the most cutting-edge research on precast pavement technology for the first time. Firstly, precast pavement is divided into two categories, precast cement concrete pavement and precast carpeted flexible pavement, according to the application of precast technology in pavement engineering. Subsequently, the structural characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of various precast pavement systems are compared and analyzed; technical problems in precast pavement systems are explained; and future development directions are identified. In addition, the text specifically mentions the great contribution of precast carpeted flexible pavement technology in reducing the harmful effects of asphalt fumes on humans and the environment. In this investigation, four types of sands as alternatives to river sand, namely, crushed sand (CS), marine sand, fine recycled concrete aggregate (FRCA), and fine reclaimed asphalt pavement (FRAP), were studied for their potential for cement-concrete pavement applications. Initially, the physicochemical and morphological characteristics of these sands were understood and later linked to the hydration kinetics and the behavior of cement-mortar systems in both the fresh and hardened states. Due to their evenly graded particle size distribution, CS and FRCA exhibited higher packing densities despite having more gradient angularity, whereas the interlocking capacity of FRAP was found to be affected by the agglomerated particles. Morphology, fineness modulus, and chemical composition of the sands were observed to be the dominating parameters affecting the hydration kinetics and thus the performance of the mortar mixes. In seasonally frozen regions, concrete pavement is exposed to cycles of freeze-thaw and erosion from de-icing salt, which can lead to unfavorable service conditions and vulnerability to damage. This paper examines the compressive strength, flexural-tensile strength, abrasion resistance, permeability, and spacing factor of concrete, taking into account the impact of various curing conditions, de-icing salt solutions, and mass fractions on the concrete's freeze-thaw resistance. Two test methods, the single-face method and the fast-freezing method, were used to comparatively analyze the freeze-thaw resistance of concrete. The analysis was based on the surface scaling, water absorption rate, mass loss rate, relative dynamic elastic modulus, and relative durability index. The results indicate that the presence of salt solution significantly worsened the degree of concrete damage caused by freeze-thaw cycles. The use of freeze-thaw media, specifically sodium chloride ( N a C l ), calcium chloride ( C a C l 2 ), and potassium acetate ( K A c ) at mass fractions of 5%, 4.74%, and 5%, respectively, had the greatest impact on the surface scaling of concrete. However, their effect on the water absorption rate was inconsistent. When the freeze-thaw medium was water, the concrete's relative dynamic elastic modulus and relative durability index were 9.6% and 75.3% higher, respectively, for concrete cured in 20 °C—95% RH conditions compared to those cured in 0 °C—50% RH conditions. We propose a comprehensive relative durability index ( D F w ) by combining the results of two methods of freeze-thaw tests. The D F w of concrete cured in 0 °C—50% RH conditions was 83.8% lower than that of concrete cured in 20 °C—95% RH conditions when exposed to a freeze-thaw medium of 5% mass fraction N a C l solution. This paper discusses the possibility of assessing the k-value of power plant fly ash using durability. Compressive strengths, activity indices, pressure water seepage depth and carbonation depth were determined for cement mortars with 10, 20 and 30% cement replacement by fly ash for ages of 7, 28 and 60 days. The k-values for each cement substitute were determined for each age using the relationship between water/cement ratio and compressive strength. Using the results of the depth of pressurized water seepage and depth of carbonation, the determined k-values were assessed and k-values that are safe for use of power plant fly ash in aggressive XC and XD environments were determined. Currently, great importance is attached to the reduction of emissions in industrial production, especially in the production of cement, when it is indicated that during production 1 ton of cement produces approximately 0.6 ton of CO2. Reducing emissions is possible thanks to secondary raw materials, which are produced in large quantities in the Czech Republic volumes for which a suitable use is sought. Some secondary raw materials are suitable for use in concrete mixes, which are used to improve the rheology of the fresh concrete mixture as well as the properties hardened concrete. Currently, there is an effort to eliminate the production of cement, to which its partial replacement by admixtures could also contribute. Therefore it is necessary determine the optimal admixture that could be used to replace part of the cement in concrete mix. Our aim is to analyze the function of reinforcement elements (dowel bars) in cement concrete pavement to highlight the influence of these elements on the service life of the pavement as a whole and to find possible alternatives to existing products that are freely available on the Czech market. That is, how these elements in the form of dowel bars should work properly so that the function meets the design assumptions of a rigid pavement. We describe the procedure for inserting dowel bars during paving, which is directly related to the possibilities of using different dowel bars. In this study, the hybrid usage of Kevlar and steel fiber in concrete pavements was investigated. For this purpose, the concrete was designed using the water/binder ratio (0.40, 0.45, 0.50), silica fume (instead of cement 0, 5, 10%), Kevlar fiber (0 gr/m3, 500 gr/m³, 1000 gr/m³) and steel fiber (0 gr/m³, 500 gr/m³, 1000 gr/m³). Taguchi method was used as the experimental design, and optimum levels of parameters were determined for 28-days compressive strength, flexural strength, and toughness. According to the experiments and observations, the positive effect of Kevlar fiber upon energy absorption capacity (toughness), compressive and flexural strength of concrete was determined. Using only Kevlar fiber increasing up to 5.1% in compressive strength and up to 14.5% in flexural strength were observed. The combination of an absorbing structure and a road is a promising strategy for road deicing using microwaves. In this study, cement mortar (CM) specimens containing a carbon fiber screen (CFS) were prepared to concentrate electromagnetic losses on a road surface. The effect of the size and depth of the CFS on the surface heating efficiency of the microwave was studied and optimized, and a microwave deicing experiment was conducted. The results indicated that the destructive interference produced by the CFS led to the effective surface heating of the CM/CFS specimens. The optimal surface heating rate was 0.83 °C/s when the spacing, depth, and width of the CFS were 5.22, 13.31, and 2.80 mm, respectively. The deicing time was shortened by 21.68% from 83 to 65 s, and the heating rate increased by 17.14% from 0.70 to 0.82 °C/s for the specimen with CFS-1, which was 15 mm depth. Our results demonstrate that CM/CFS composite structures can be effectively applied to increase the capacity and accelerate the development of the microwave deicing of roads. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pavement engineers are paying attention to the stabilization of granular layers in the modern era of sustainable construction. A well-drained pavement can extend the service life to its design life if properly designed and maintained. The water infiltrating into the pavement causes detrimental effects and reduces the service life of the pavement. The open-graded cement-stabilized macadam (OGCSM) can act as a drainage layer in sustainable pavements. Cement cannot be considered as a long-term sustainable material due to its high carbon footprint. This paper investigated the suitability of a supplementary cementitious material, ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS), as a partial replacement of cement in OGCSM, a drainage layer in pavements. The strength and permeability characteristics of the mix were studied using an unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test and specially fabricated permeameters, respectively. OGCSM was optimized at 7% cement content, and cement in the OGCSM was partially substituted with GGBFS at various replacement levels. The mix was optimized at 80% replacement of cement with GGBFS, which satisfied the specified requirements for strength, permeability, and durability. The UCS, coefficient of effective permeability, and water resistance index of the optimized mix were 2.88 MPa, 60.58 m/day and 96.33%, respectively. The morphology and mineralogy characteristics of the optimized mix were determined to justify the strength gain in cementitious mixtures. The porosity of the OGCSM mix was estimated as 25.86% using computed tomography (CT) scanned images. Pavement crack detection is of significant importance in ensuring road safety and smooth traffic flow. However, pavement cracks come in various shapes and forms which exhibit spatial continuity, and algorithms need to adapt to different types of cracks while preserving their continuity. To address these challenges, an innovative crack detection framework, CrackDiff, based on the generative diffusion model, is proposed. It leverages the learning capabilities of the generative diffusion model for the data distribution and latent spatial relationships of cracks across different sample timesteps and generates more accurate and continuous crack segmentation results. CrackDiff uses crack images as guidance for the diffusion model and employs a multi-task UNet architecture to predict mask and noise simultaneously at each sampling step, enhancing the robustness of generations. Compared to other models, CrackDiff generates more accurate and stable results. Through experiments on the Crack500 and DeepCrack pavement datasets, CrackDiff achieves the best performance (F1 = 0.818 and mIoU = 0.841 on Crack500, and F1 = 0.841 and mIoU = 0.862 on DeepCrack). In order to solve the problem that the skid resistance of concrete pavement in tunnel deteriorates rapidly, which is easy to cause traffic accidents, the anti-skid rapid elevation technology of surface treatment is proposed. Wear tests were used to investigate the effects of concrete surface roughness, properties of modified emulsified asphalt binder and anti-skid fine aggregate type on long-term skid resistance of treated surfaces. The results show that the four coarsening methods of fine milling, milling, grooving and brooming can improve the skid resistance of concrete, and the skid resistance durability of fine milling and milling is better. The adhesive property of modified emulsified asphalt is the best when the content of water-based epoxy resin is 20%. In different aggregates, the anti-skid effect is better when silicon carbide is used as anti-skid aggregate and the particle size is 0.6mm:0.3mm = 2:3. The method of fine milling of concrete surface + spraying epoxy emulsified asphalt + spreading silicon carbide can effectively improve the anti-skid performance of the original concrete pavement, and the feasibility of the scheme is verified by the test road. Detecting road cracks is essential for inspecting and assessing the integrity of concrete pavement structures. Traditional image-based methods often require complex preprocessing to extract crack features, making them challenging when dealing with noisy concrete surfaces in diverse real-world scenarios, such as autonomous vehicle road detection. This study introduces an image-based crack detection approach that combines a Random Forest machine learning classifier with a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) to address these challenges. Three state-of-the-art models, namely MobileNet, InceptionV3, and Xception, were employed and trained using a dataset of 30,000 images to build an effective CNN. A systematic comparison of validation accuracy across various base learning rates identified a base learning rate of 0.001 as optimal, achieving a maximum validation accuracy of 99.97%. This optimal learning rate was then applied in the subsequent testing phase. The robustness and flexibility of the trained models were evaluated using 6,000 test photos, each with a resolution of 224 × 224 pixels, which were not part of the training or validation sets. The outstanding results, boasting a remarkable 99.95% accuracy, 99.95% precision, 99.94% recall, and a matching 99.94% F1 Score, unequivocally affirm the efficacy of the proposed technique in precisely identifying road fractures in photographs taken on real concrete surfaces. One of the most significant problems affecting a concrete bridge's safety is cracks. However, detecting concrete bridge cracks is still challenging due to their slender nature, low contrast, and background interference. The existing convolutional methods with square kernels struggle to capture crack features effectively, fail to perceive the long-range dependencies between crack regions, and have weak suppression ability for background noises, leading to low detection precision of bridge cracks. To address this problem, a multi-stage feature aggregation and structure awareness network (MFSA-Net) for pixel-level concrete bridge crack detection is proposed in this paper. Specifically, in the coding stage, a structure-aware convolution block is proposed by combining square convolution with strip convolution to perceive the linear structure of concrete bridge cracks. Square convolution is used to capture detailed local information. In contrast, strip convolution is employed to interact with the local features to establish the long-range dependence relationship between discrete crack regions. Unlike the self-attention mechanism, strip convolution also suppresses background interference near crack regions. Meanwhile, the feature attention fusion block is presented for fusing features from the encoder and decoder at the same stage, which can sharpen the edges of concrete bridge cracks. In order to fully utilize the shallow detail features and deep semantic features, the features from different stages are aggregated to obtain fine-grained segmentation results. The proposed MFSA-Net was trained and evaluated on the publicly available concrete bridge crack dataset and achieved average results of 73.74%, 77.04%, 75.30%, and 60.48% for precision, recall, F1 score, and IoU, respectively, on three typical sub-datasets, thus showing optimal performance in comparison with other existing methods. MFSA-Net also gained optimal performance on two publicly available concrete pavement crack datasets, thereby indicating its adaptability to crack detection across diverse scenarios. This paper presents an effort to address urgent issues associated with semitruck platooning. The weigh-in-motion data were first examined to determine the characteristics of naturally formed semitruck platoons. A safety-based two-vehicle platoon model was then utilized to determine the critical headways for assessing the safety of semitruck platooning in various driving scenarios. The possibilities for passenger vehicles to cut into semitruck platoons were assessed using actual vehicle headway data. Finally, the potential impacts of semitruck platooning on typical interstate highway pavements were assessed using finite element analysis. Most semitruck platoons consist of two to three vehicles. An optimal platoon gap of 0.94 s was identified for connected and automated semitruck platooning. The potential impacts of truck platooning on concrete pavement were negligible for a platoon gap greater than 0.2 s. Asphalt overlay is widely used in maintaining and rehabilitating highway system performance. However, explicit calculation methods for the asphalt overlay thickness range is lacking. Taking stone mastic asphalt (SMA) and asphalt concrete (AC) asphalt overlay on cement concrete pavement as examples, the paper proposed a design method for the asphalt overlay thickness range based on the shear performance of the interlayer. Firstly, the shear stress distribution regularities on the asphalt overlay and Portland cement concrete interlayer was calculated with a multilayer elastic theory. Meanwhile, the shear strength was obtained from a series of direct shear tests. The shear characters of the asphalt overlay met with the Mohr–Coulomb criterion, and the shear strength parameters cohesive force c and interface friction angle φ on the interlayer were acquired. Finally, a method for determining the thickness range of double layer asphalt overlay under different traffic conditions was given. The epoxy resin adhesive was recommended for the highway with severe local premature shear failure compared with the modified emulsion asphalt. Therefore, through the above research, the amount of asphalt used is controlled in a reasonable range, thus improving the pavement structure durability and reducing energy consumption. The current standard for evaluating road conditions worldwide relies primarily on the Pavement Condition Index (PCI) and the International Roughness Index (IRI). The IRI can be further calculated to obtain the Riding Quality Index (RQI). To assess pavement damage, various imaging equipment is commonly utilized, providing consistent results that align with actual road conditions. For roughness detection, the Laser Profilometer offers excellent results but may not be suitable for rural roads with poor conditions due to its high inspection cost and the need for a stable environmental setting. Therefore, there is a pressing need to develop cost-effective, rapid, and accurate roughness inspection methods for these roads, which constitute a significant portion of the road network. This study examined the relationship between PCI and RQI using nonlinear regression on 30,088 valid pavement inspection records from various regions in China (totaling 24,624.222 km). Our objective was to estimate RQI solely from PCI data, capitalizing on its broad coverage and superior accuracy. Additionally, we explored how PCI levels impact RQI decay rates. The models in this study were compared to several models published in previous studies at last. Our findings indicate that the model performs best for low-grade roads with low PCI scores, achieving over 90% accuracy for both cement concrete and asphalt concrete pavements. Furthermore, different levels of pavement damage have distinct effects on RQI decay rates, with the most significant impact observed when the pavement is severely damaged. The models in this study outperformed all the other available models in the literature. Consequently, under limited inspection conditions in rural areas, pavement damage inspection results can effectively predict riding quality or roughness, thereby reducing inspection costs. Overall, this study offers valuable insights but has limitations, including limited global generalizability and the model's applicability to high-grade roads. Roller-compacted concrete (RCC) for pavements has experienced problems with its physical-mechanical performance over extended periods due to ambient and in situ curing conditions. Accordingly, this study aimed to present multiple regression equations for calculating the physical-mechanical properties of RCC for pavements under different service and mix conditions. For this purpose, the research included two cement and two water contents, one reduced with admixture, and four combinations of temperature and relative humidity. For model calibration and definition of the equations, cubic and beam samples were fabricated to carry out physical-mechanical tests, such as moisture content, shrinkage, and modulus of rupture. Laboratory-obtained data were studied with the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to determine the best regression equations. The main findings determined that the behavior of a mixture of RCC at a prolonged ambient exposure time is possible because the surface models and the RSM were consistent with the different service and mix conditions. The models showed an accuracy of 98.99% in detecting shrinkage changes from 12 to 16% cement with 5.65% water in dry to wet ambient conditions. Similarly, moisture content and modulus of rupture had a 98.27 to 98.88% fit. Finally, the drying shrinkage, with mixes of 12% cement and water content variations with water-reducing admixture and superplasticizer effects, had an adjustment of 94.87%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research focuses on the behavior of roller-compacted concrete (RCC) used in pavements, which are prone to deterioration affecting their performance. These deteriorations result from various causes, including traffic load, errors during construction, mix design, and ambient conditions. Among these, ambient conditions could lead to a marked variable impact on material behavior and durability depending on the conditions associated with each region. Accordingly, this study aims to deepen the understanding of the effect, which a broader range of ambient conditions and different mix designs have on the physical and mechanical properties of RCC. Measurements such as the amount of water vapor per kilogram of air were used to apply the findings comprehensively. The RCC analysis encompassed experimentation with different compositions, altering the cement water ratio amount, and adding a superplasticizer. The impact of curing on the materials was evaluated before subjecting them to various humidity and temperature conditions. Laboratory tests were conducted to measure performance, including moisture, shrinkage, compressive strength, and the progression of flexural fracture resistance over curing periods of up to 90 days. The results revealed a logarithmic correlation between shrinkage and ambient humidity, which is the most determining factor in performance. Mix optimization through increased cement and reduced water enhanced the tensile strength of the material. Furthermore, the curing process was confirmed to increase resistance to shrinkage, especially in the long term, establishing it as a crucial element for the structural stability of RCC, which is relatively insensitive to variations in ambient conditions. This paper presents research about a mixture design method of pavement concrete coblending rubber and fiber into ordinary concrete. Mechanical-based tests regarding the compressive strength, elastic modulus, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, and four-point bending stiffness were conducted to evaluate the flexural toughness of concrete, and a slab-based three-point bending test was designed to evaluate the bending toughness improvement of the road pavement concrete slab. The results indicated that with the increase in single rubber content, the compressive strength and elastic modulus of concrete decreased continuously. The rubber concrete specimen remained relatively complete in appearance during destruction, showing the satisfied ductile failure characteristics to pavement usage with the optimal rubber content of 10%. After adding basalt fiber (BF) or polypropylene fiber (PPF), with the increase of fiber content, the bending stiffness of concrete decreased, the corresponding deflection of peak load increased continuously, and the bending deformation capacity of concrete could be significantly enhanced. Compared with the reference group, when the rubber content is 10%, and basalt fiber content is 0.5%–2%, the equivalent initial bending strength of fiber-reinforced rubber concrete is increased by 105.4%–164.4%. In general, BF is better than PPF in improving the toughness of rubber concrete, and the optimal dosage of BF is 1% of concrete volume in this test. When loaded to the limit load, the deflection of the basalt fiber–reinforced rubber concrete slab in the middle of the bottom span was about four times higher than that of the benchmark concrete slab, the bending deformation capacity and toughness of the basalt fiber–reinforced rubber cement concrete slab have been greatly improved. From the test results, the mixture design method of flexible pavement cement concrete based on rubber and fiber coblending was proposed, which contributes to the development of flexible materials for concrete pavement. Thermally induced stresses can build up in rigid pavements without pressure relief joints. The pressure created becomes a problem for adjacent structures such as bridges. The pressure can cause the pavement to push on the bridge and close the bridge expansion joints. This sets the stage for additional distress if not repaired quickly. This paper presents a case study where excessive pavement pressure damaged a two-span conventional bridge spanning Interstate 35 in Moore, Oklahoma. The bridge was instrumented with vibrating wire sensors to gather information on the behavior of the bridge before and after the repairs. There is a dearth of sensor verified observations of excessive pavement pressure acting on conventional bridges. The sensor data provided in-depth information on the response of the distressed bridge before and after repairs to thermal loading. Prior to the repairs the approach pavement was pushing on the bridge deck and causing the abutment backwalls to tilt toward the bridge. Following the repairs, the approach pavement is no longer pushing on the bridge deck. However, the abutment backwall is now moving in response to thermal changes in the bridge deck, likely due to excessive friction between the deck and the abutment backwall. U-shaped shaped cracking and spalling, previously observed in integral abutment bridges, was observed at this conventional abutment bridge, and the mechanisms causing these cracks and spalling are discussed. Through this study it was found that placement of pavement pressure relief joints relative to the bridge is crucial for reducing the magnitude of stress acting on the bridge. It was also found that the pavement stress acting on a bridge deck can be estimated with vibrating wire strain gauges given a baseline strain response for the approach pavement. An investigation was carried out to analyze the flexural fatigue performance of pavement quality concrete (PQC) of M40 and M50 grades, made with conventional materials out of which river sand (RS) was replaced by copper slag (CS) by varying concentrations to the extent of 100% by volume. Experiments were conducted in the laboratory to determine the 90-day flexural strength of PQC samples (100×100×500 mm) under four-point loading. Based on respective flexural strength, repeated loads were applied for the conduct of flexural fatigue tests of PQC specimens at stress levels of 0.7, 0.8, and 0.9, each at 1 Hz frequency. In terms of fatigue life distributions, the flexural fatigue performance of several PQC mixtures has been evaluated. Three methods were used to estimate various parameters for the Weibull distribution. It is observed that the fatigue life distribution of both M40 and M50 grade PQC mixes made with CS can be modeled by a two-parameter Weibull distribution with a correlation coefficient of more than 0.95. The estimation of fatigue life of PQC mixes has also been done at different failure probabilities. The 90-day flexural strength of PQC mixes (both grades) with CS replacing RS, increased compared with conventional PQC. Further, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of PQC mixes confirmed the homogeneity of the concrete. The fatigue performance was also enhanced with CS replacing RS. This study aimed to validate that laboratory-scale results could be commercially replicated when manufacturing marketable precast concrete. Construction and demolition waste (CDW) was separated into two (fine and coarse) recycled aggregates (RAs). Precast paver and kerb units were fabricated by partial or total substitution of natural aggregates (NAs) by RAs. The study involved the comprehensive characterisation of raw materials, including particle size distribution, mineral composition, and elemental composition. Paver blocks and kerbs manufactured with up to 50% RAs showed mechanical resistance (T = 3.7 ± 0.2 and B = 5.3 ± 0.6 MPa, respectively), water absorption between 5.3–5.7%, and abrasion resistance (approximately 20.2 mm), which met the standard requirements (UNE-EN 1340:2004 and UNE-EN 1338:2004). Furthermore, industrial-scale precast pavement units demonstrated strength and durability suitable for heavy traffic areas. A reduction of 13% in cement content could maintain the requirements with a partial RA substitution of 25%, offering economic and environmental benefits. Therefore, it is feasible at an industrial level to replace NAs with RAs, promoting durability and technological properties with a positive environmental impact and considerably reducing CO2 emissions by up to 65%. Overall, pavers with RAs manufactured at the laboratory scale met mechanical standards, and the kerb stones showed improvements in abrasion resistance. Freeze–thaw (F-T) is one of the principal perils afflicting concrete pavements. A remedial strategy used during construction encompasses the integration of hybrid fibers into the concrete matrix. An extant research gap persists in elucidating the damage mechanism inherent in hybrid steel fiber (SF)- and basalt fiber (BF)-reinforced concrete subjected to F-T conditions. This paper empirically investigated the durability performance of hybrid fiber-reinforced concrete (HFRC) subjected to F-T cycles. The impact of SF/BF hybridization on mass loss, abrasion resistance, compressive strength, flexural strength, damaged layer thickness, and the relative dynamic modulus of elasticity (RDME) was examined. The damage mechanism was explored using micro-hardness and SEM analysis. The results indicate that incorporating hybrid SF/BF effectively enhances the F-T resistance of concrete and prolongs the service life of concrete pavement. The mechanisms underlying these trends can be traced back to robust bonding at the fiber/matrix interface. Randomly dispersed SFs and BFs contribute to forming a three-dimensional spatial structure within the concrete matrix, suppressing the expansion of internal cracks caused by accumulated hydrostatic pressure during the F-T cycle. The ever-increasing use of fibres in roller-compacted concrete pavement (RCCP) necessitates fully identifying the mechanical and permeability properties of RCCPs. Incorporating fibres in RCCP with different properties leads to a better comparative investigation that helps discover the unique effects of each fibre on the RCC characteristics. This aim was achieved via analyzing the test results of compressive and flexural strengths, flexural toughness, drying shrinkage, porosity, and water sorptivity. The reinforced RCCs were prepared by incorporating 0.5% and 1% of steel, Barchip, Kortta, and polypropylene fibres in a plain mixture. The plain mixture was chosen between nine mixtures, the differences of which were defined in w/c ratio, volume of cement content, and type of aggregate grading curve. The results indicated that increase in the volume of fibres from 0.5% to 1% could reduce the drying shrinkage rate and enhances the flexural toughness of FR-RCC. Furthermore, the water sorptivity and porosity were found to increase with the substitution of fibres in the RCC mixtures. Here, the water sorptivity of the specimens was highly dependent on the type and surface geometry of fibres. The development of new functional pavement materials and the application of sustainable concepts in road construction have led to a dramatic change in functional roads. Pouring semiflexible pavement (SFP) has superior advantages over traditional concrete and asphalt pavements in terms of road performance and convenient construction. The purpose of this research is to investigate the feasibility of SFP in terms of healing capacity, noise reduction, and electrical conductivity. First, the self-healing properties of the cement-asphalt-aggregate (C-AS-A) interface are analyzed by pull-out test, and the cracking characteristics and crack-healing capacity of SFP are investigated by semicircular bending (SCB) test and X-ray computed tomography (CT), respectively. Subsequently, the noise reduction performance of SFP, asphalt mixture, and cement concrete are compared by tire vertical drop test. Finally, different conductive SFP materials including graphite powder, carbon fiber, and steel fiber are prepared and their resistivity and road performance are analyzed. The results show that the C-AS-A interface has a significant self-healing ability; the cracks in SFP mainly occur at the C-AS-A interface (accounting for 53.12%) at −10°C. Moreover, when heated with microwave radiation, the heating-healing ratio of the SFP specimen increases by 63.33% with the addition of steel fiber. Besides, the noise reduction capability of SFP material is between that of asphalt mixture and cement concrete. By combining graphite powder and carbon fiber, the electrical conductivity and road performances of SFP are significantly improved. Safe operation is crucial for civil aviation, and reducing the risk of aircraft tire hydroplaning is essential for civil aviation safety. Here, a new 3D aircraft tire-grooved (smooth) wet pavement model based on the coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) algorithm for the A320 aircraft was developed, and the effect of the ground contact area of an aircraft tire on the hydrodynamic pressure and support force of the tire under smooth and grooved wet pavement conditions was investigated. The results indicate that at the same taxiing speed, the ground contact area of the aircraft tire under the grooved wet-pavement condition is reduced by 19.8% compared to the smoothed wet-pavement condition, which is reduced by 6.2%. Similar patterns are observed for the hydrodynamic pressure and the critical hydrodynamic speed during landing and taking-off procedures, with upper and lower limited values obtained through the simulation results. Additionally, the predicted correction factor of the hydroplaning speed at different water film thicknesses is compared with those values obtained via the NASA formula. A comparison shows that the NASA formula underestimates the critical hydroplaning speed during the landing procedure. Polyurethane (PU) composite is increasingly used as a repair material for civil engineering infrastructure, including runway, road pavement, and buildings. Evaluation of polyurethane grouting (PUG) material is critical to achieve a desirable maintenance effect. This study aims to evaluate the flexural behavior of normal concrete repaired with polyurethane grout (NC-PUG) under a three-point bending test. A finite element (FE) model was developed to simulate the flexural response of the NC-PUG specimens. The equivalent principle response of the NC-PUG was analyzed through a three-dimensional finite element model (3D FEM). The NC and PUG properties were simulated using stress–strain relations acquired from compressive and tensile tests. The overlaid PUG material was prepared by mixing PU and quartz sand and overlayed on the either top or bottom surface of the concrete beam. Two different overlaid thicknesses were adopted, including 5 mm and 10 mm. The composite NC-PUG specimens were formed by casting a PUG material using different overlaid thicknesses and configurations. The reference specimen showed the highest average ultimate flexural stress of 5.56 MPa ± 2.57% at a 95% confidence interval with a corresponding midspan deflection of 0.49 mm ± 13.60%. However, due to the strengthened effect of the PUG layer, the deflection of the composite specimen was significantly improved. The concrete specimens retrofitted at the top surface demonstrated a typical linear pattern from the initial loading stage until the complete failure of the specimen. Moreover, the concrete specimens retrofitted at the bottom surface exhibit two deformation regions before the complete failure. The FE analysis showed good agreement between the numerical model and the experimental test result. The numerical model accurately predicted the flexural strength of the NC-PUG beam, slightly underestimating Ke by 4% and overestimating the ultimate flexural stress by 3%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The absence of specifications for the granulometry a quarry must produce causes a serious problem, making it difficult for quarries to adjust their processes to produce within the range required by clients, and for costumers, making it a difficult process to design asphalt mixes and concretes that conform to the granulometric curves established in regulations. It is essential to develop limit granulometric curves for quarries, adapted to customer requirements. In this paper, a methodology for granulometric control in the quarry is proposed, which includes the collection of process information, the preparation of control charts and the process capability analysis according to the established specifications. Moreover, an example of the development of limit granulometric curves is proposed for the quarry under study located in Argentina, in the province of Buenos Aires, which would allow to produce aggregates whose granulometry can be used in asphalt mixes CAC D19 and concrete pavements. Among the construction processes of Portland cement concrete pavement (PCCP), the curing compound spraying process is one of the most important processes. If the curing compound spraying amount does not meet the standard or if the curing compound is not applied evenly, distresses occur at the early age of construction, ultimately causing deterioration in concrete pavement performance. The purpose of this study is to develop a real-time monitoring system for a curing compound spraying process based on the Internet of Things (IoT) and sensing technologies to improve the construction quality of concrete pavement. To achieve the goal of this research, we conducted various laboratory and field experiments. The curing compound spraying amount and sprayed status were measured and analyzed using flowmeters, image acquisition sensors, and an image processing program, and the data were provided to workers in real time and simultaneously transmitted to the IoT cloud to form a database. From this study, it is confirmed that the IoT-technology-based curing compound spraying amount and sprayed status monitoring systems can be successfully established to manage construction quality related to the curing of concrete pavement. A magnetite mortar microwave-absorbing layer that could be applied to concrete pavement was studied to improve the deicing efficiency of roads in low-temperature conditions. The magnetite cement mortar (MCM) was prepared by using magnetite as the main absorbing material. The microwave absorption ability and heating characteristics of MCM with different magnetite contents were investigated. In addition, the mechanical and durability properties of MCM were studied. Furthermore, a microwave-absorbing layer was prepared and tested for outdoor field deicing. The result showed that adding magnetite effectively improved the mechanical strength and frost resistance of MCM, which could improve its load resistance and service life. Meanwhile, the microwave absorption ability of MCM was also improved with the increase of magnetite content. At the microwave frequency of 2.45 GHz, the average heating rate of MCM with 80% magnetite content was 2.27 times than that of ordinary cement mortar. In addition, the content of magnetite was positively correlated with the heat transfer ability of MCM. Magnetite conversion of microwave energy into heat energy could quickly transfer heat to the whole mortar system. The study investigates the hygrothermal behavior of pavements used in sidewalks with pervious concrete paving (PCP) and traditional concrete paving (TCP) slabs tested in an experimental site located in a tropical region. Meteorological variables (incoming and outgoing radiation) were monitored alongside pavement-related variables (solar reflectivity, surface temperatures, stored heat fluxes, and soil moisture under the concrete slabs) during dry, transition, and wet seasons. The lower solar reflectance index of the PCP slabs, due to their medium gray color, was responsible for increased solar energy absorption and higher surface temperatures when compared to the TCP slabs, in light gray color. Voids and pores within the PCP microstructure helped to store less energy during the daytime, releasing less energy to the adjacent thermal environment during nighttime. In turn, because of the high levels of incident solar radiation in the tropics, the cooling effect provided by the evaporation of the water retained inside the cementitious matrix lasted on average 12 h after precipitation. Many bridge structural components are subjected to repetitive vehicle load and temperature gradient action. The resulting cyclic tensile stresses within the structures could cause premature fatigue failure of concrete, dramatically impairing structural components' durability and sustainability. Although substantial knowledge of fatigue properties on low-strength pavement concrete and high-strength structural concrete has been obtained, research on the most widely used normal-grade ordinary concrete in bridge engineering is still ongoing. Therefore, a four-point bending fatigue test of 97 C50 concrete specimens under a constant amplitude sinusoidal wave was conducted in the laboratory, the flexural fatigue behavior of plain and reinforced concrete specimens was studied, and the cyclic deformation evolution of concrete under fatigue loading was obtained. The empirical fatigue S-N equations of concrete with a failure probability p of 0.1~0.5 were derived through statistical analysis of the test results. The fatigue life of the tested specimens exhibited a two-parameter Weibull distribution. In addition to the maximum stress level Smax, the stress ratio R is also a key factor affecting the flexural fatigue life of concrete N. The semi-logarithmic and logarithmic equations were almost identical at the tested stress levels, the latter predicting longer fatigue life for Smax < 0.70. The restraining effect from steel reinforcement slightly lengthened the concrete's fatigue cracking initiation life. The insight into concrete flexural fatigue properties from this study not only contributes to a better understanding of structural concrete, but also provides a basis for the practical evaluation of concrete or composite bridge decks. The paper presents the results of laboratory tests and the complete results of the implementation of the Sprint fast-setting concrete technology used during the reinstallation of the concrete pavement of the DK50 road (the Młodzieszyn bypass). The problem of concrete pavement repair is related to economic and social costs and, above all, to long repair time. After an extensive analysis of various technologies, the authors created a dedicated solution, which, based on commonly existing materials, allows for a very quick repair of the existing pavement. The obtained properties of the fast-setting concrete allow the maintenance of rheological parameters for 2 h from its production and to install the mixture of the consistency of class S3/S4, while the obtained compressive strength exceeds 25 MPa within 6 h of installation. The concrete parameters obtained after 24 h show a strength exceeding 40 MPa, and after 28 days—exceeding 60 MPa. The tensile strength at shattering exceeds 5 MPa, while the tensile strength at flexural strength exceeds 7 MPa. In addition, all parameters of the fast-setting concrete meet the highest requirements currently set for newly built concrete pavement loaded by very heavy traffic. The most important parameter is the possibility to shorten the repair time of concrete pavement to one day, significantly reducing the social costs associated with closing a single lane or the entire road. An important element of the presented technology is the possibility of producing the mixture at a stationary concrete batching plant, and in the future—with the use of bags for patching potholes in road pavement. Incorporating blast furnace slag into the composition of paving concrete can be one of the cost-effective ways to completely eliminate by-products from the pig iron production process (approximately 70% granulated slag and 30% air-cooled slag). The possibility to reintroduce blast furnace slag back into the life cycle will provide significant support to current environmental concerns and the clearance of tailings landfills. Especially in recent years, granulated and ground blast furnace slag (GGBS) as a substitute for cement and air-cooled blast furnace slag (ACBFS) aggregates as a substitute for natural aggregates in the composition of concretes have been studied by many researchers. But concrete compositions with large amounts of incorporated blast furnace slag affect the mechanical and durability properties through the interaction between the slag, cement and water depending on the curing times. This study focuses on identifying the optimal proportions of GGBS as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM) and ACBFS aggregates as a substitute to natural sand such that the performance at 90 days of curing the concrete is similar to that of the control concrete. In addition, to minimize the costs associated with grinding GGBS, the hydration activity index (HAI) of the GGBS, the surface morphology, and the mineral components were analyzed via X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDX), and nuclear magnetic resonance relaxometry (NMR). The flexural strength, the basic mechanical property of road concretes, increased from 28 to 90 days by 20.72% and 20.26% for the slag concrete but by 18.58% for the reference concrete. The composite with 15% GGBS and 25% ACBFS achieved results similar to the reference concrete at 90 days; therefore, they are considered optimal percentages to replace cement and natural sand in ecological pavement concretes. The HAI of the slag powder with a specific surface area equivalent to that of Portland cement fell into strength class 80 at the age of 28 days, but at the age of 90 days, the strength class was 100. The results of this research present three important benefits: the first is the protection of the environment through the recycling of two steel industry wastes that complies with European circular economy regulations, and the second is linked to the consequent savings in the disposal costs associated with wastefully occupied warehouses and the savings in slag grinding. The complex effect of the amount of cement, polypropylene fiber (the fiber length was 39 mm, and the diameter was 0.45 mm), and polycarboxylate superplasticizer on concrete properties for rigid pavement was determined using the methods of experiment planning and experimental–statistical modeling. The fluidity of all the mixtures was S1. The W/C of the mixtures depended on the composition of the concrete and variable from 0.32 to 0.46. It was found that, by increasing the amount of superplasticizer from 1% to 1.8–2%, the compressive strength of concrete increased by 4.5–6 MPa after 3 days and by 7–9 MPa after 28 days. The flexural strength in this case increased by 0.6–0.9 MPa. The use of polypropylene fiber in the amount of 1.5–1.8 kg/m3 increased the compressive strength of concrete by an average of 3 MPa, increased the flexural strength by 0.5–0.6 MPa, reduced the abrasion capacity by 9–14%, and increased the frost resistance by up to 50 cycles. When using a rational amount of superplasticizer and fiber, the compressive strength of concrete, even with a minimum cement amount of 350 kg/m3, was at least 65 MPa, its flexural strength was at least 6 MPa, its frost resistance was F200, and its abrasion capacity was not more than 0.30 g/cm2. Concrete with such properties can be used for roadways of any type. Low abrasion capacity and high frost resistance provide the necessary durability of concrete for rigid pavement during operation. Falling weight deflectometer (FWD) tests are performed worldwide for assessing the health of pavement structures. Interpretation of FWD-measured surface deflections turns out to be challenging because the behavior of pavement structures is temperature-dependent. In order to investigate the influence of temperature on the overall pavement performance and on the stiffness of individual layers, temperature sensors, asphalt strain gauges, and accelerometers were installed into one rigid (concrete) and two flexible (asphalt) pavement structures, mostly at layer interfaces. Three different methods for installation of the strain gauges are compared. From correspondingly gained experience, it is recommended to install a steel dummy as a place-holder into the surface of hot asphalt layers, immediately after their construction and right before their compaction, and to replace the dummy with the actual sensor right before the installation of the next layer. Concerning the first data obtained from dynamic testing at the field-testing sites, FWD tests performed at different temperatures deliver, as expected, different surface deflections. As for the rigid pavement, sledgehammer strokes onto a metal plate, transmitted to the pavement via a rubber pad, yield accelerometer readings that allow for detection of curling (=temperature-gradient-induced partial loss of contact of the concrete slab from lower layers). In the absence of curling, the here-proposed sledgehammer tests yield accelerometer readings that allow for quantification of the runtime of longitudinal waves through asphalt, cement-stabilized, and unbound layers, such that their stiffness can be quantified using the theory of elastic wave propagation through isotropic media. Airport pavements are prone to early defects during the construction phase, and their early performance during the construction phase is significantly affected by the external temperature field. This article takes the concrete pavement of Xiamen Xiang'an New Airport as an example and uses a three-dimensional (3D) humidity simulation program for cement concrete pavement to study the evolution behavior of the early stage humidity field of the pavement in a humid and hot climate environment. The results indicate that the evolution law of the humidity field of the concrete pavement slab was consistent with the environmental field, presenting a 24 h periodic variation. The environmental field had a significant impact on the humidity of the surface layer of the pavement slab, and the humidity decreased rapidly with time. There was a humidity gradient on both the horizontal plane and the cutting plane of the slab, the horizontal humidity was concentrated from the boundary into the middle of the slab, and the sectional humidity was concentrated from the top to the bottom of the slab. Environmental parameters, construction parameters, and material and structural parameters all influenced humidity through humidity exchange or by changing the saturated vapor pressure inside the slab. The humidity field was most sensitive to environmental humidity and maintenance methods, but less sensitive to material parameters and structural parameters. Through analysis, it is advisable to avoid hot seasons, choose periods of increased environmental humidity, adopt appropriate maintenance methods during construction to reduce humidity stress on the slab, and therefore decrease early stage deterioration and improve service life. A thorough petrographic evaluation of aggregates from igneous rocks in terms of their alkali–silica reaction (ASR) potential is crucial in ensuring the durability and long-term performance of concrete structures, especially those where access to additional alkalis is possible, such as from de-icing agents. The aim of the research was to assess the potential reactivity of aggregates from igneous rocks, as only such aggregates are used for concrete airport pavements in Poland. Petrographic analysis was conducted to identify the reactive minerals in the aggregate, and it was extended by quantitative image analysis. The strained, microcrystalline and cryptocrystalline quartz were found to be reactive components but significantly differed in content. It was found that aggregates from igneous rocks were characterized by different susceptibility to ASR and that methods to mitigate the occurrence of ASR should be considered to be used in airfield concrete. A relationship between the content of analyzed reactive minerals and the expansion of mortar bars in AMBT, as well as of the concrete prism in the CPT method, was revealed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The settlement in permafrost regions has a significant effect on the safety of the aircraft. Therefore, a numerical model of asphalt concrete pavement and subgrade in permafrost regions is proposed and verified by comparing with previous studies. Numerical models under the dynamic load of aircraft are used to analyze the settlement nephogram, time-dependent curve, and settlement curve. Results show that the influences of different parameters on settlements decrease slowly at the depth of 0–1.45m, then decrease quickly at the depth of 1.45-2m, finally tend to be stable. The peaks of settlements increase with the growth of international roughness index, taxiing speed, and aircraft's weight. The settlement increases little when the international roughness index is more than 3. The settlement varies significantly when the taxiing speed is from 30m/s to 70m/s. Pervious pavements emerge as an alternative for good management of surface runoff, providing the opportunity to quickly and efficiently reduce the potential for flooding and reuse rainwater. However, the mechanical and hydraulic performance of the material have been extensively evaluated at the laboratory level, leaving aside how the material will behave in the field and how its exposure will accelerate the loss of its hydraulic properties (clogging). In this sense, this research evaluated the mechanical and hydraulic performance of permeable concrete pavements in an experimental field that simulates the working conditions of the material, where properties such as compressive strength, tensile strength, porosity, and permeability were evaluated, as well as the loss of hydraulic efficiency due to clogging. This is to increase the knowledge of the material to provide construction and quality control guidelines that guarantee the correct functioning of this type of pavement, considering its great contribution to sustainability. Despite numerous advantages, there are a few challenges associated with the designing and fabrication of roller compacted concrete pavement (RCCP) specimens—compaction mechanisms employed in the RCCP mix proportioning, specimen fabrication, and actual pavement construction are different in principle, leading to significant disparity between the field and laboratory performance. To reconcile this discrepancy, an effort has been made to study the effect of compaction on the performance of RCCP. Initially, the effect of different compaction types, namely vibrating table, vibrating hammer, modified Proctor, and gyratory compactor (GY) on the optimum moisture content of RCCP was investigated, then the roles of moisture content and compaction type on dry density, mechanical aspects (compressive strength, indirect tensile strength, and flexural strength), rideability, and transport properties (porosity and absorption) of RCCP were elucidated. Also, alternative methods for quantifying the workability and compactability of GY compacted specimens are proposed. The findings from this study suggest employing a particular compaction mechanism both for the mix proportioning as well as specimen fabrication to avoid the under- or overestimation of RCCP performance. Water has a significant impact on the dielectric constant of materials. As a multiphase composite material, the effect of water content must be taken into account when modeling the composite dielectric of cement concrete. Cement concrete traditionally has been thought of as a three-phase mixed material consisting of mortar, aggregate (limestone), and pores (air). Water was used as a constituent material of cement concrete in this paper, and its content was described in terms of water saturation. By abstracting the components of cement concrete into independent medium units and arranging them according to certain rules, the four-phase mixing model of cement concrete can be established. To investigate the effect of water, the dielectric constant of cement concrete was measured using a network analyzer at various water saturation levels. The experimental results show that water significantly can enhance the dielectric constant of cement concrete, and this effect is related to porosity: the higher the water saturation, the faster the dielectric constant increases. According to the established concrete four-phase mixed model, combined with the parallel plate capacitor theory, a composite dielectric model considering water saturation was developed which can improve the prediction accuracy under different water saturation conditions and provide a foundation for the application of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) in the quality inspection of cement concrete pavement. This research documents the real-world performance of a new pavement product for use in cold regions—steel fiber-reinforced rubberized concrete (SFRRC). During the previous phase of this research, SFRRC underwent laboratory testing as proof of concept. During the current phase, precast slabs of SFRRC was installed on a public road, Abbott Road, in the Municipality of Anchorage, Alaska and monitored in the field using visual inspection, a continuous collection of strain gauge data, deflection measurements, rut depth, skid resistance, and other measures. The current location of the SFRRC is considered a high-traffic urban arterial, which makes it an effective location to study rutting, freeze-thaw resistance, falling weight deflection, skid resistance, and life-cycle cost. A comparative analysis was conducted using the same measuring techniques on hot mix asphalt (HMA) on an adjacent road section built at the same time. The results show that the SFRRC road sections have significantly better rutting resistance compared to the adjacent HMA road section, and the results of the freeze-thaw resistance and deflection field testing validate the results of the laboratory testing performed as part of an earlier phase. Furthermore, comparative life-cycle cost analyses of SFRRC and HMA justifies the use of SFRRC in roadway construction in cold regions in terms of cost effectiveness, enhanced performance, and extended life. The outcome of this research recommends the use of SFRRC for highway intersections and/or test sections on major arterials as the next phase of introducing this material for roadway construction in cold regions. The newly developed material of steel fiber-reinforced rubberized concrete (SFRRC) can be readily utilized in the construction of pavement structures where issues of short pavement life are a concern in northern climates as a result of the use of studded tires. This new material addresses the shortfalls of the use of Portland cement concrete (PCC) pavement under very low temperatures, such as micro-crack development, as a result of the freeze-thaw cycles by utilizing the added rubber in that it is readily able to expand and contract. In addition, the added steel fiber will enhance the resistance of crack development under low temperatures. Furthermore, this new material can be an alternative to Portland cement concrete pavement, where premature failures like joint cracking or raveling can occur. This study addresses the challenges of overlaying old concrete pavement with asphalt by introducing a new trackless tack coat material containing polymer. The aim is to enhance the durability of asphalt concrete overlay pavement on old cement concrete pavement. It contributes to the development of improved construction techniques for pavement rehabilitation and highlights the need for reliable adhesion performance evaluation based on different spray amounts and surface conditions. Additionally, to evaluate the effect of the adhesion performance based on the spraying amount, a tensile adhesion test was conducted by applying spray amounts of 0.30, 0.45, and 0.60 l/m2 on different surface conditions. The basic and adhesion performances of the polymer-modified tack coat material are evaluated through direct tensile and shear bond strength tests. The test outcomes demonstrated that the newly developed polymer-modified tack coat material had considerably greater adhesion strength compared to the traditional rapid-setting products. Its adhesive strength was 1.68 times higher on concrete and 1.78 times higher on asphalt. The new trackless tack coat material exhibited an adhesion performance of 1.05 MPa in direct tensile strength at 0.45 l/m2, which was 1.21 times higher than the rapid-setting tack coat. Results also confirmed that the new tack coat material exhibits values 1.90 times greater than the conventional rapid-setting tack coat material in shear bond strength, respectively. By simulating the process of separation and re-adhesion of pavement layers caused, the new tack coat material shows a tensile adhesion strength of 63% of the original state, which is advantageous for securing the durability of the pavement. Overall, the newly developed polymer-modified trackless tack coat has been shown to effectively enhance the adhesion performance between pavement layers without process delay, highlighting the potential of the new tack coat material to enhance the durability of asphalt concrete overlay pavement on old cement concrete pavement. Semi-flexible pavement material (SFPM) combines the advantages and avoids the disadvantages of asphalt concrete flexible pavement and cement concrete rigid pavement. However, due to the problem of interfacial strength of composite materials, SFPM is prone to cracking diseases, which limits the further application of SFPM. Hence, it is necessary to optimize the composition design of SFPM and improve its road performance. In this study, the effects of cationic emulsified asphalt, silane coupling agent and styrene–butadiene latex on the improvement of SFPM performance were compared and analyzed. The influence of modifier dosage and preparation parameters on the road performance of SFPM was investigated by an orthogonal experimental design combined with principal component analysis (PCA). The best modifier and the corresponding preparation process were selected. On this basis, the mechanism of SFPM road performance improvement was further analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) spectral analysis. The results show that adding modifiers can significantly enhance the road performance of SFPM. Compared to silane coupling agents and styrene–butadiene latex, cationic emulsified asphalt changes the internal structure of cement-based grouting material and increases the interfacial modulus of SFPM by 242%, allowing cationic emulsified asphalt-SFPM (C-SFPM) to exhibit better road performance. According to the results of the principal component analysis, C-SFPM has the best overall performance compared to other SFPMs. Therefore, cationic emulsified asphalt is the most effective modifier for SFPM. The optimal amount of cationic emulsified asphalt is 5%, and the best preparation process involves vibration at a frequency of 60 Hz for 10 min and 28 days of maintenance. Porous asphalt concrete (PAC) is an open-graded asphalt concrete with a high air void, which functions as permeable pavement with high surface frictional resistance. PAC typically requires a high amount of coarse aggregate to provide the required porous structure. An expensive high-quality polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) is commonly required to prevent draindown issues and to improve the performance of PAC. Bottom ash (BA), a high-porosity byproduct from coal-fired power plants, is used as a greener product to improve the quality of traditional asphalt cement penetration grade 60/70 (AC 60/70) for producing low-cost PAC in this research. The effect of the BA replacement ratio (0%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% by total weight of fine aggregate) on the draindown, loss of particle, Marshall properties, indirect tensile strength (ITS), indirect tensile resilient modulus (IT Mr), indirect tensile fatigue life (ITFL), permanent deformation (PD), rut depth, and skid resistance of BA-AC60/70-PAC were measured and compared with PMA-PAC. The draindown and particle loss values of BA-AC60/70-PAC were found to decrease with an increase in the BA replacement ratio. The BA replacement improved the Marshall properties, strength index, ITS, IT Mr , ITFL, PD, rut depth, and skid resistance of PAC up to the highest value at the optimum BA replacement ratio of 20%. The improved ITS is associated with the improved IT Mr in a linear relationship for all BA replacement ratios. The change in ITFL was found to be linearly related to IT Mr at a specific stress level. At the same design criteria, the 20% BA replacement ratio yields the reduction of total construction cost of BA-AC60/70-PAC surface course by 33% benchmarked to the conventional PMA-PAC surface course. Waste clay brick (WCB) accounts for a dominant fraction of construction and demolition waste, and it is necessary to explore the sustainable measures of it as a construction material in civil engineering. This paper evaluated the effect of WCB content on the performance of cement-stabilized recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) in pavement base/subbase applications. Based on the microscopic tests and laboratory tests of the aggregate, the compaction test, unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test, indirect tensile strength (IDT) test, resilient modulus test, freeze and thaw cycling test, and drying shrinkage test were conducted with the different WCB content cement-stabilized RCA/WCB blends. A trial pavement section was paved based on the test results, and finite element analysis (FEA) was carried out to investigate the effect of cement-stabilized RCA/WCB blends on asphalt pavement. It is concluded that the potential utilization of pozzolanic properties of WCB plays an important role in pavement applications. The moderate content of WCB fine aggregate is beneficial for the UCS, IDT, resilient modulus, freeze and thaw cycling, and drying shrinkage of cement-stabilized RCA/WCB blends, while the content of WCB coarse aggregate influences the test results to a worse degree. Besides, the performances of the trial pavement section comply with the pavement design and specifications. Furthermore, the results of FEA indicate that the maximum vertical displacement and von Mises stress increase with the reduction of the resilient modulus. This paper gives systematic research on the effect of WCB content on cement-stabilized pavement base/subbase applications, and it may improve the potential application of cement-stabilized RCA/WCB blends in pavement base/subbase. Lunar landing pad is an important infrastructure on the lunar surface and is used to improve landing safety and mitigate dust problems caused by launch and landing. It will be subjected to the dynamic mechanical loading from the footpads of the spacecraft and the retrorocket plume loading. Only the former was considered in this study, and the latter will be explored in future studies. Prefabricated module assembly method is one of the most feasible construction methods. The assembly pattern, size, and thickness of the prefabricated modules are important factors that affect the structural performance of the lunar landing pad. In this study, three forms of mechanical interlocking were identified for an assembled lunar landing pad (ALLP) according to the interlocking form. In addition, a simple shape was designed for each form. Interlocking concrete blocks were fabricated, and a plate loading test (PLT) was conducted to evaluate the structural performance of the assembled concrete block pavement (ACBP). By comparing the numerical and experimental results, corresponding finite element (FE) models of the plate loading tests were developed and validated. Finally, an FE model to evaluate the structural performance of the ALLP based on the validated ACBP FE model was developed. The effects of the size and thickness of the interlocking modules and load position on the structural performance of the ALLP were further studied. The results indicated that the thickness of the modules had a greater influence on the structural performance than the load position and size of the modules. This work deals with the flexural performance of a soil-cement for pavement reinforced by polypropylene and steel fibers, and the main purpose is to evaluate the effect of different curing times. In this sense, three different curing times were employed to investigate the influence of fibers on the material's behavior at varying levels of strength and stiffness as the matrix became increasingly rigid. An experimental program was developed to analyze the effects of incorporating different fibers in a cemented matrix for pavement applications. Polypropylene and steel fibers were used at 0.5/1.0/1.5% fractions by volume for three different curing times (3/7/28 days) to assess the fiber effect in the cemented soil (CS) matrices throughout time. An evaluation of the material performance was carried out using the 4-Point Flexural Test. The results show that steel fibers with 1.0% content improved by approximately 20% in terms of initial strength and peak strength at small deflections without interfering the flexural static modulus of the material. The polypropylene fiber mixtures had better performance in terms of ductility index reaching values varying from 50 to 120, an increase of approximately 40% in residual strength, and improved cracking control at large deflections. The current study shows that fibers significantly affect the mechanical performance of CSF. Thus, the overall performance presented in this study is useful for selecting the most suitable fiber type corresponding to the different mechanisms as a function of curing time.
